Recent advances in electrochemical functionalization using diazonium salts

Arenediazonium salts have gained attention in the scientific community due to their numerous synthetic applications. In the traditional method of dediazoniation of arenediazonium salts, the requirements for toxic oxidants and costly catalysts affect their cost-effectiveness and sustainability. However, recent advances in synthetic organic electrochemistry allow for the in situ reduction of arenediazonium salts, affording different functionalizations under mild reaction conditions and with a shorter reaction time. Herein, we report advances up to now of facile organic electrochemical syntheses using arenediazonium salt precursors that avoid the use of hazardous reductants.

Catalytic Activity of Alkali Metal Cations for the Chemical Oxygen Reduction Reaction in a Biphasic Liquid System Probed by Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Chemical reduction of dioxygen in organic solvents for the production of reactive oxygen species or the concomitant oxidation of organic substrates can be enhanced by the separation of products and educts in biphasic liquid systems. Here, the coupled electron and ion transfer processes is studied as well as reagent fluxes across the liquid|liquid interface for the chemical reduction of dioxygen by decamethylferrocene (DMFc) in a dichloroethane-based organic electrolyte forming an interface with an aqueous electrolyte containing alkali metal ions. This interface is stabilized at the orifice of a pipette, across which a Galvani potential difference is externally applied and precisely adjusted to enforce the transfer of different alkali metal ions from the aqueous to the organic electrolyte. The oxygen reduction is followed by H2 O2 detection in the aqueous phase close to the interface by a microelectrode of a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM). The results prove a strong catalytic effect of hydrated alkali metal ions on the formation rate of H2 O2 , which varies systematically with the acidity of the transferred alkali metal ions in the organic phase.

Investigation of molecular partitioning between non polar oil droplets and aqueous solution using double potential step chronoamperometry

Double potential step chronoamperometry (DPSC) is demonstrated as a technique for investigating partitioning between a solute in aqueous solution and non-polar oil droplet(s) immobilised at an electrode. Here a species in aqueous solution which does not partition into the oil phase is converted at the electrode surface into another species which either does not or does partition into the oil drop. The first case is investigated experimentally by considering generation of the ionic redox species, FcTMA(2+) from FcTMA(+), while the second case is exemplified by studies of Br2 generation from Br(-). The case of molecular partitioning at the three phase interface has received little attention hitherto. To maintain oil droplet stability a boron-doped diamond electrode is employed functionalised with Pt nanoparticles to impart electrocatalytic activity on the electrode towards Br2 production. An arrangement is utilised where the droplet(s) sit(s) on (but does not cover) the electrode surface. We show both experimentally and through finite element simulation how the charge-time profile for the generation and collection of electroactive species can be used to obtain information on the extent of partitioning and how this is affected by factors such as the number and size of droplets. Finally, we highlight the suitability of this approach for investigating reactions which take place within the droplet.
