Orienteering performance and ingestion of glucose and glucose polymers

Sources of Variability in Performance Times at the World Orienteering Championships

PURPOSE

An improvement equal to 0.3 of the typical variation in an elite athlete's race-to-race performance estimates the smallest worthwhile enhancement, which has not yet been determined for orienteers. Moreover, much of the research in high-performance orienteering has focused on physical and cognitive aspects, although course characteristics might influence race performance. Analysis of race data provides insights into environmental effects and other aspects of competitive performance. Our aim was to examine such factors in relation to World Orienteering Championships performances.

METHODS

We used mixed linear modelling to analyze finishing times from the three qualification rounds and final round of the sprint, middle-distance, and long-distance disciplines of World Orienteering Championships from 2006 to 2013. Models accounted for race length, distance climbed, number of controls, home advantage, venue identity, round (qualification final), athlete identity, and athlete age.

RESULTS

Within-athlete variability (coefficient of variation, mean ± SD) was lower in the final (4.9% ± 1.4%) than in the qualification (7.3% ± 2.4%) rounds and provided estimates of smallest worthwhile enhancements of 1.0%-3.5%. The home advantage was clear in most disciplines, with distance climbed particularly impacting sprint performances. Small to very large between-venue differences were apparent. Performance predictability expressed as intraclass correlation coefficients was extremely high within years and was high to very high between years. Age of peak performance ranged from 27 to 31 yr.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that elite orienteers should focus on training and strategies that enhance performance by at least 1.0%-3.5% for smallest worthwhile enhancement. Moreover, as greater familiarity with the terrain likely mediated the home advantage, foreign athletes would benefit from training in nations hosting the World Orienteering Championships for familiarization.

Exercise and the oxidation and storage of glucose, maize-syrup solids and sucrose determined from breath 13CO2

In order to determine which of maize syrup solids, glucose and sucrose were more readily oxidised during exercise and least readily oxidised afterwards, the rates of oxidation of three almost identical isoenergetic solutions of carbohydrates (330 ml of 18.5% w/v solutions of glucose, maize syrup solids and sucrose, 989-1050 kJ total energy) naturally enriched with 13C were examined at rest and during and after 1 h uphill walking at 75% maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) in nine subjects [mean (SEM) VO2max, 45.4 (0.9) ml.kg-1.min-1]. Rates of production of expired 13CO2 were used to estimate rates of oxidation of each exogenous substrate. Energy expenditure and the contributions from total carbohydrate and fat oxidation were calculated from whole-body gas exchange. At rest, maize syrup solids were oxidised less than sucrose during the 1st h [glucose 2.7 (0.2) g.h-1, maize syrup solids 1.9 (0.3) g.h-1, sucrose 3.7 (0.2) g.h-1; maize syrup solids vs sucrose P < 0.01], but this difference disappeared after a further 3 h at rest [glucose 8.3 (0.5) g.h-1, maize syrup solids 7.7 (0.5) g.h-1, sucrose 8.1 (0.4) g.h-1]. During exercise, all the carbohydrates were oxidised to the same extent [glucose 23.0 (2.8) g.h-1, maize syrup solids 23.9 (3.4) g.h-1, sucrose 27.5 (2.6) g.h-1) but during 4 h of recovery after exercise, maize syrup solids were oxidised least [glucose 4.6 (0.1) g.h-1, maize syrup solids 3.7 (0.1) g.h-1, sucrose 6.4 (0.1) g.h-1; P < 0.05] suggesting that it may be stored to a greater extent. The results suggest that 18.5% glucose, maize syrup solids and sucrose solutions were equally well oxidised during exercise. During recovery from exercise maize syrup solids were oxidised less than glucose, which in turn was oxidised less than sucrose.

Dietary supplements in sport

Studies of the dietary practices of athletes report that nutritional supplements are commonly used. Supplementation practices vary between sports and individual athletes; however, there is evidence that at least some athletes use a large number of supplements concurrently, often in doses that are very high in comparison with normal dietary intakes. In exploring supplementation practices we propose a classification system separating the supplements into dietary supplements and nutritional erogogenic aids. The dietary supplement is characterised as a product which can be used to address physiological or nutritional issues arising in sport. It may provide a convenient or practical means of consuming special nutrient requirements for exercise, or it may be used to prevent/reverse nutritional deficiencies that commonly occur among athletes. The basis of the dietary supplement is an understanding of nutritional requirements and physiological effects of exercise. When the supplement is used to successfully meet a physiological/nutritional goal arising in sport it may be demonstrated to improve sports performance. While there is some interest in refining the composition or formulation of some dietary supplements, the real interest belongs to the use or application of the supplement; i.e. educating athletes to understand and achieve their nutritional needs in a specific sports situation. The sports drink (carbohydrate-electrolyte replacement drink) is a well known example of a dietary supplement. Scientific attitudes towards the sports drink have changed over the past 20 years. Initial caution that carbohydrate-electrolyte fluids compromise gastric emptying during exercise has now been shown to be unjustified. Numerous studies have shown that 5 to 10% solutions of glucose, glucose polymers (maltodextrins) and other simple sugars all have suitable gastric emptying characteristics for the delivery of fluid and moderate amounts of carbohydrate substrate. The optimal concentration of electrolytes, particularly sodium, remains unknown. Most currently available sports drinks provide a low level of sodium (10 to 25 mmol/L) in recognition that sodium intake may promote intestinal absorption of fluid as well as assist in rehydration. The sodium level of commercial oral rehydration fluids (used in the clinical treatment of diarrhoea and dehydration) is higher than that of the present range of sports drinks. However, even if research indicates that intestinal glucose transport is optimally stimulated at higher sodium concentrations, concern for the palatability of sports drinks may impose a lower ceiling for sodium levels. Commercial viability of a sports drink requires that it provide a refreshing and palatable fluid replacement across a wide variety of sports and exercise situations.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Carbohydrate ingestion during prolonged running exercise results in an increase of serum cortisol and decrease of gonadotrophins

We tested the hypothesis that improved availability of energy through carbohydrate ingestion could counteract the documented suppression of pituitary-gonadal function during prolonged exercise. Nine trained males repeated twice a 36 kilometre running exercise with two weeks interval. During the tests the subjects ingested in a randomized single-blind fashion a total of 1050 millilitres of carbohydrate and placebo solutions. The total amount of ingested carbohydrate was 105 grams. Venous blood samples were taken before the exercise (sample A), immediately after exercise (B), and 2 hours later (C). In the B samples plasma glucose was 14% higher (P less than 0.01) and serum cortisol 13% higher (P less than 0.05) in the carbohydrate than in the control trial. In contrast, the level of LH was 18% (P less than 0.05) and that of FSH 11% lower (P less than 0.05) in the carbohydrate than in the placebo trial. Serum testosterone concentration did not differ between the treatment groups. We conclude that carbohydrate ingestion does not counteract the exercise-associated suppression of gonadotrophin secretion, but results in paradoxical increase of serum cortisol and decrease of LH and FSH, in comparison to placebo-treated controls. The higher cortisol level in carbohydrate group may be secondary to higher insulin levels.

Glucose polymer syrup attenuates prolonged endurance exercise-induced vasopressin release

We investigated the effect of glucose and glucose polymer ingestion on plasma arginine vasopressin (pAVP) levels, on plasma osmolality (p-osm), and on performance during two prolonged endurance events. The study subjects were 37 Finnish elite endurance athletes, of whom 18 were orienteers and 19 cross-country skiers. Plasma AVP increased in both combined glucose and glucose polymer groups, but the increase in the glucose polymer group was significantly smaller (P less than 0.001) than that in the glucose group. A significant change in p-osm caused a significant change in pAVP and vice versa. Both the orienteers and the skiers on glucose polymer tended to have more success in the competition; the orienteers on glucose polymer ran the last third of the competition significantly faster than those on glucose (P less than 0.05). It is suggested, in the light of the smaller pAVP response, that after glucose polymer ingestion the physical stress in prolonged endurance exercise is smaller than after ingestion of glucose.
