Abstract
OBJECTIVES Individual-level social determinant of health (SDOH) measures alone may insufficiently explain disparities in edentulism among seniors. Therefore, the authors examined the correlation of census tract-level SDOH and residential racial segregation measures with edentulism in Californian adults aged ≥65 years old. METHODS Explanatory variables were obtained from Healthy Places Index (HPI), the National Cancer Institute and diversitydatakids.org. The edentulism outcome variable was obtained from CDC's PLACES small area estimates from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. Pearson and Spearman rank correlations were estimated. Multiple linear regression and multi-collinearity evaluations were performed. The Global Moran's I statistic assessed partial autocorrelation within census tracts. RESULTS Pearson and Spearman correlations were similar, supporting robustness. HPI, an area measure of advantage, strongly negatively correlated with edentulism prevalence [correlation coefficient: -0.87; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.87, -0.86]. A change of 1.0 in HPI corresponded to an estimated decrease in edentulism prevalence of 5.9% (linear model adjusted R2 = 0.78). Racially segregated census tracts with Hispanics or Blacks alone were positively correlated with edentulism prevalence [0.60, 95% CI: 0.58, 0.62; and 0.33, 95% CI: 0.31, 0.35, respectively]. The converse was seen in census tracts with non-Hispanic Whites alone [-0.57, 95% CI: -0.58, -0.55]. Global Moran's I statistic for edentulism (0.13) and HPI scores (0.19) were significant (both p < .001) indicating geospatial autocorrelation. CONCLUSIONS Higher disadvantage and minority racial segregation within census tracts were positively correlated with edentulism prevalence. Future research and policy should consider possible interventions improving SDOH to reduce oral health inequities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the association between prior incarceration length and edentulism among US adults 55 years and older. Analyses explored indirect factors such as wealth, smoking status, mental health, and chronic health conditions that may explain this relationship. In addition, the study analyzed how associations between incarceration and edentulism vary by race and ethnicity. METHODS The authors used data from the 2012-2014 Health and Retirement Study (unweighted N = 11,630; weighted N = 72,872,877) to assess the relationship between incarceration duration and edentulism through multivariable logistic regression. The Karlson-Holm-Breen method evaluated indirect effects, and multiplicative interaction terms examined variations by race and ethnicity. RESULTS Net of control variables analyses showed a positive association between having been incarcerated for more than 1 month and higher odds of edentulism. However, this association was rendered statistically nonsignificant after accounting for wealth, current smoking status, mental health, and chronic disease. Collectively, wealth and smoking explained approximately 60% of the association between prior incarceration length and edentulism. Racial moderation models indicated that longer incarceration times increased edentulism likelihood in non-Hispanic Whites specifically. CONCLUSIONS To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study on the association between prior incarceration length and edentulism among older adults. Study findings indicated the relationship between incarceration and edentulism was explained by higher wealth and current smoking status. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS These findings highlight the need for adequate access to oral health care services for formerly incarcerated older adults to improve oral health and enhance their overall health and quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental care is a critical component of healthy aging; however, emerging evidence suggests that having been previously incarcerated is a risk factor for not using dental care services. This study investigates the relationship between prior incarceration and dental care among older adults and assesses whether wealth and dental insurance explain this relationship. METHODS Data are from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling older adults in the United States, collected in 2012 and 2014. Multivariable logistic regression is used to assess the relationship between a history of incarceration and dental care. Mediation analyses were conducted using the Karlson-Holm-Breen method of indirect effects in non-linear models. Statistical analyses were conducted from February to April 2024. RESULTS Adjusting for potential confounding variables, a respondent's prior incarceration is associated with a 25% lower odds of dental care use (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.748, 95% CI = 0.624, 0.896). The relationship between incarceration and dental care use is fully mediated-over 90% is explained by-wealth and having dental care insurance. Prior incarceration decreased the likelihood of dental care only among non-Hispanic White respondents. CONCLUSIONS The findings offer new evidence that prior incarceration is a risk factor for lacking the ability to utilize dental care among older adults and suggest that broader consequences of incarceration for wealth accumulation and access to dental insurance underpin this relationship. These results suggest the urgent need to expand access to affordable dental care services for older adults with a history of incarceration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental attendance is important for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases. In this study, we aimed to assess the extent of the association between dental visits, inadequate oral health, and multimorbidity (MM), and whether this association differs by age and sex. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the first follow-up wave (2018) of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). Poor self-reported oral health (SROH), oral health problems, and edentulism were used to indicate inadequate oral health. MM was defined as having 2 or more chronic conditions out of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental illnesses. Dental visiting was determined as the number of visits to a dental professional within the past 12 months. Covariates included socioeconomic, behavioural factors, and the availability of dental insurance. We constructed multivariable Poisson and logistic regression models with interactions terms and estimated the relative excess risk due to interaction prevalence ratio (RERIPR) to assess the effect measure modification of age and sex on the associations of interest. We conducted sensitivity analyses and estimated E-values for unmeasured confounding. RESULTS In this sample (n = 44,815), dental visiting was inversely associated with inadequate oral health and MM in adjusted models, reducing the odds/prevalence of poor SROH (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.34, 0.51), oral health problems (PR 0.89, 95% CI 0.79, 0.94), edentulism (OR 0.10, 95% CI 0.06, 0.15), and MM (PR 0.86, 95% CI 0.79, 0.92). These associations were stronger in older age and females. CONCLUSION Dental visiting may contribute to better oral health and reduced chronic diseases in the middle-aged and older population. Our findings suggest the need for age and sex-specific targeted interventions to optimize oral and overall health.

Abstract
Secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) functions as a protease inhibitor that modulates excessive proteolysis in the body, exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, regulates inflammatory responses, and plays an important role in the innate immunity. The purpose of the study was to artificially synthesize a SLPI, an antimicrobial peptide, and investigate its effect on antimicrobial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis and interleukin-6 (IL-6) production. SLPI protein with a molecular weight of approximately 13 kDa was artificially synthesized using a cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) system and investigated by western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Disulfide bond isomerase in the protein synthesis mixture increased the amount of SLPI synthesized. The synthesized SLPI (sSLPI) protein was purified and its antimicrobial activity was investigated based on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and bacterial adhesion to oral epithelial cells. The effect of sSLPI on IL-6 production in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLFs) was examined by ELISA. Our results showed that sSLPI significantly inhibited the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and bacterial adhesion to oral epithelial cells and further inhibited IL-6 production by HPLFs. These results suggested that SLPI artificially synthesized using the CFPS system may play a role in the prevention of periodontal diseases through its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Emerging studies on the links between suboptimal oral health and multimorbidity (MM), or the co-existence of multiple chronic conditions, have raised controversy as to whether enhancing access to dental care may mitigate MM in those with suboptimal oral health. In this study, we aim to assess the extent of the association between suboptimal oral health and MM and whether access to dental care can modify this association. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) (N = 44,815, 45 to 84 y old). Edentulism, self-reported oral health (SROH), and other oral health problems (e.g., toothache, bleeding gums) were used as indicators of suboptimal oral health. MM was defined according to the Public Health Agency of Canada as having 2 or more of the following chronic conditions: cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental illnesses. For robustness, we also used a cutoff of having 3 or more of these chronic conditions. Variables for access to dental care included (1) dental visits within the past year, (2) availability of dental insurance, and (3) cost barriers to dental care. We constructed robust Poisson regression models to estimate the association between suboptimal oral health and MM and then assessed the effect measure modification by indicators of access to dental care on a multiplicative scale. We also calculated the relative excess risk due to interaction for prevalence ratio (PR) on an additive scale. RESULTS Indicators of suboptimal oral health were significantly associated with MM (edentulism PR 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08, 1.27; poor SROH PR 1.44, 95% CI 1.33, 1.54; other oral health problems PR 1.52, 95% CI 1.44, 1.78). The magnitude of this association was higher in individuals who reported fewer dental visits within the past year, lacked dental insurance, and avoided dental care due to costs. CONCLUSION The association between suboptimal oral health and MM may be exacerbated by barriers to accessing dental care. Policies aiming to enhance access to dental care may help mitigate MM in middle-aged and older Canadians with suboptimal oral health. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT This study offers insights into the connection among suboptimal oral health, multimorbidity, and access to dental care factors in middle-aged and older Canadians. The findings can be of value for clinicians and policy makers aiming to enhance medical-dental integration and improve accessibility to dental care and to patients seeking information about the connections between oral health and chronic conditions. Implementation has the potential to enhance individual well-being and drive systemic improvements in health care.

Abstract
Poor oral health can impact overall health. This study assessed the association between dental factors (dentate status and dental utilization) and self-rated health (S-RH) among older adults in two cross-sectional datasets: (1) NIH "All of Us (AoU) Research Program" (May 2018-July 2022 release) and (2) U.S. nationally representative "Health and Retirement Study" (HRS) 2018 wave. Participants aged ≥ 51 years were included in these analyses if (1) from AoU, they had clinical dental and medical data from electronic health records (EHRs) and surveys (n = 5480), and (2) from HRS, they had dental and socio-demographic survey data (n = 14,358). S-RH was dichotomized (fair/poor vs. better) and analyzed with logistic regression. Sample survey weights for HRS and stratification and averaging AoU results used the weighted HRS race-ethnicity and age distribution standardized respective analyses to the U.S. population. Fair/poor S-RH was reported by 32.6% in AoU and 28.6% in HRS. Dentate status information was available from 7.7% of AoU EHRs. In population-standardized analyses, lack of dental service use increased odds of fair/poor S-RH in AoU, OR (95% CI) = 1.28 (1.11-1.48), and in HRS = 1.45 (1.09-1.94), as did having diabetes, less education, and ever being a smoker. Having no natural teeth was not statistically associated with fair/poor S-RH. Lack of dental service was positively associated with fair/poor S-RH in both datasets. More and better oral health information in AoU and HRS are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the dental care pattern and survival rates of participants who received long-term care (LTC) and a matched control cohort in South Korea. BACKGROUND Global ageing trends and the development of superaged societies pose healthcare challenges. South Korea's LTC system aids those with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Despite the link between oral health and systemic diseases, providing dental care in LTC facilities often reflects social neglect. METHODS We identified 1 459 163 individuals eligible for LTC insurance in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database from July 2008 to 2015 (LTC cohort) and 1 459 544 individuals matched through propensity-score matching (matched cohort). The LTC recipients were further categorised into subgroups based on their care type (institutional, home or mixed care). Population of utilising dental services and the average number of dental visits were counted in each cohort, and the survival rate of the LTC cohort was determined according to dental utilisation. RESULTS Population of utilising dental services increased steadily in all cohorts except for institutional care, with the highest utilisation (around 30%) observed in the matched cohort. Lower independence in LTC cohorts was associated with lower dental utilisation: 18-27% for home care, 12-18% for mixed care, and 10% for institutional care. The survival rates in the LTC cohort were significantly lower than in the matched cohort (P < .0001), with 28.1% survival in LTC vs 59.3% in the matched cohort. CONCLUSION Long-term care recipients experience social neglect for oral care, while higher survival rates were observed in those utilised dental services.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Certain chronic non-communicable diseases have been associated with the loss of all natural permanent teeth, referred to as edentulism. It has been suggested that edentulism, a chronic dental state, involving the loss of all teeth and poorer masticatory efficiency, could be associated with multiple chronic conditions as people age. In this study, we describe the association between the number of comorbidities and incident edentulism in a representative sample of older Americans. METHODS We took data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Dentate participants aged 50 or older at the baseline of 2006 (N = 13 221) and 2012 (N = 13 938) were linked to their dentate and survival status at the follow-up interviews in 2012 and 2018, respectively. The association between the number of comorbidities and incident edentulism was investigated by using multinomial logistic regression models. RESULTS Over the two observation periods, the number of selected chronic conditions was predictive of edentulism 6 years later. A 10% higher chance of becoming edentulous by 2012 (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.20) was found for every additional comorbid condition to those who remained dentate in 2012. A similar association was identified for the 2012-2018 period. CONCLUSION Among older adults, the number of comorbidities was predictive of incident edentulism, and the same association pattern was found across two longitudinal study periods. Older adults with an increase in the number of comorbidities may experience a higher chance of tooth loss later in time.

Abstract
β-defensin 2 (BD-2), an antimicrobial peptide (AMP), is expressed by oral epithelial cells and plays an important role in innate immunity of the oral cavity. Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) systems have been studied for the synthesis of various proteins, however, the synthesis of BD-2 by a CFPS system has not been extensively explored. Liposomes have been developed as tools for drug delivery. A delivery of liposome-encapsulated AMP to oral epithelium may be useful to prevent oral infectious diseases. In the present study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the BD-2 protein, artificially synthesized using a CFPS system and encapsulated in liposomes. BD-2 protein was artificially synthesized using template DNA and a reconstituted CFPS system and was identified by western blotting. Bilayer liposomes were prepared using 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-choline and 3-sn-phosphatidylcholine from egg yolk. The artificially synthesized BD-2 was encapsulated in liposomes, collected by ultrafiltration, and detected by western blotting. Human oral epithelial cells were cultured with the liposome-encapsulated BD-2 and the concentration of BD-2 in the cell lysate of the culture with the synthesized BD-2 was higher than that of the control cultures. The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized BD-2 was investigated by an adhesion assay of Porphyromonas gingivalis to oral epithelial cells. The artificially synthesized BD-2 and its liposome significantly inhibited adhesion of P. gingivalis to oral epithelial cells. These results suggest that artificially synthesized BD-2 and liposome-encapsulated BD-2 show antimicrobial activity and can potentially play a role in oral healthcare for periodontal diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth loss may be a surrogate for systemic health and aging. However, no previous studies have systematically assessed multiple outcomes relevant to aging trajectory in this area, and many important confounders were not adjusted in most previous studies. This study aims to prospectively evaluate the associations of complete tooth loss (edentulism) with broad markers of sarcopenia, cognitive impairment and mortality. METHODS Data were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative household study of the Chinese population aged 45 years and older. Multivariate Weibull proportional hazards regression was used to assess the association between edentulism with sarcopenia and all-cause mortality. Average changes in cognitive function by edentulism was estimated by mixed-effects linear regression models. RESULTS During the 5-year follow-up, the prevalence of edentulism among adults aged 45 and over was 15.4%. Participants with edentulism had a greater decline in cognitive function compared to those without (β=-0.70, 95%CI:-1.09, -0.31, P < 0.001). The association of edentulism and all-cause mortality for 45-64 age group (HR = 7.50, 95%CI: 1.99, 28.23, P = 0.003), but not statistically significant for the ≥ 65 age group (HR = 2.37, 95%CI: 0.97, 5.80, P = 0.057). Effects of edentulism on sarcopenia are statistically significant for all age groups (45-64 age group: HR = 2.15, 95%CI: 1.27, 3.66, P = 0.005; ≥65 age group: HR = 2.15, 95%CI: 1.27, 3.66, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS These findings could have important clinical and public health implications, as tooth loss is a quick and reproducible measurement that could be used in clinical practice for identifying persons at risk of accelerated aging and shortened longevity, and who may benefit most from intervention if causality is established.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Lipocalin 2 (LCN2), a glycoprotein expressed in epithelial cells and leukocytes, has an antibacterial effect and plays a role in innate immunity. The delivery of LCN2 encapsulated in liposomes to oral epithelium may be useful to prevent oral infectious diseases. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of LCN2, artificially synthesized using a cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) system, on the adhesion of Porphyromonas gingivalis to oral epithelial cells in order to approach oral healthcare using LCN2. METHODS LCN 2 was synthesized using a CFPS system and assayed by Western blotting, mass spectrometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The bilayer liposomes were prepared by the spontaneous transfer method using 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3 phosphocholine (DOPC), 3-sn-phosphatidylcholine from Egg Yolk (Egg-PC), and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3 phosphoethanolamine (DOPE). The cellular and medium fractions derived from the culture of oral epithelial cells with liposome-encapsulated LCN2 were assayed by Western blotting and ELISA. The effect of the synthesized LCN2 on adhesion of the labeled P. gingivalis to oral epithelial cells was investigated as an evaluation of its antibacterial activity. RESULTS The synthesized LCN2 protein was identified by Western blotting; its amino acid sequence was similar to that of recombinant LCN2 protein. The additions of DOPE and octa-arginine in the outer lipid-layer components of liposome significantly increased the delivery of liposomes to epithelial cells. When oral epithelial cells were cultured with the synthesized and liposome-encapsulated LCN2, LCN2 was identified in the cellular and medium fractions by Western blotting and its concentration in the cellular fraction from the culture with the synthesized LCN2 was significantly higher than that of a template DNA-free protein. The synthesized LCN2 and liposome-encapsulated LCN2 significantly inhibited the adhesion of P. gingivalis to oral epithelial cells compared with template DNA-free protein. CONCLUSION LCN2 was artificially synthesized by a CFPS system, encapsulated in liposomes, and delivered to oral epithelial cells, and demonstrated an antibacterial action against P. gingivalis. This approach may become a useful model for oral healthcare.

Abstract
AIM Tooth loss and cognitive decline progress over time and influence each other. This study estimated the impact of sustaining natural dentition on cognitive function in U.S. adults, accounting for the fact that dental and cognitive statuses change over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from adults aged ≥51 years who participated in five waves of the Health and Retirement Study from 2004 to 2016 (n = 10,953) were analysed. The impact of retaining some natural teeth from 2006 to 2012 on cognitive function score (0-27) and cognitive impairment (defined as having a cognitive function score of <12) in 2016 was evaluated using the doubly robust targeted maximum likelihood estimation method by considering both time-invariant and time-varying confounders, including cognitive function at baseline and during follow-up. RESULTS Respondents with some natural teeth between 2006 and 2012 had a 0.40 point (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.10-0.71) higher cognitive function score and 3.27 percentage point (95% CI: 0.11-6.66) lower cognitive impairment prevalence in 2016 than those with complete tooth loss. CONCLUSIONS Considering past cognitive function assessed at multiple time points, sustained natural dentition was associated with better cognitive function.

Abstract
Traditional Medicare does not cover routine dental care, but little is known about transitions in dental outcomes upon reaching Medicare eligibility at age sixty-five. Using data from the 2010-19 Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys, we examined dental insurance, utilization, and outcomes among US adults before and after age sixty-five, using a regression discontinuity design and segmented regression analysis. Among 97,108 US adults representing a weighted population of 104,787,300 people, complete edentulism, or the loss of all teeth, increased by 4.8 percentage points at age sixty-five, and the percentage of people receiving restorative dental care decreased by 8.7 percentage points. Enrollment in Medicare Advantage, which may offer a dental benefit, was not associated with greater use of dental services relative to traditional Medicare, and Medicare Advantage enrollees had a significantly larger drop in dental spending from private insurance at age sixty-five than traditional Medicare enrollees. Expanding Medicare to cover dental services may help counteract these effects among all enrollees.

Abstract
Many studies suggest associations between oral health and cardiovascular diseases, but there is a lack of causal evidence. Exploiting exogenous variation in tooth loss in US adults due to differential childhood exposure to fluoridated water, this study investigated the causal effect of tooth loss on cardiovascular diseases. A total of 722,519 participants in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) waves 2006, 2008, or 2010 (birth years 1940-1978) were included in the analytical sample. To identify the effect of tooth loss on having a history of coronary heart disease (CHD) or stroke, instrumental variable analysis exploited childhood exposure to drinking water fluoride as an instrument. The weighted prevalence of CHD and stroke histories was 5.1% and 2.1%, respectively. First-stage regression indicated that childhood exposure to drinking water fluoride was a strong instrument for the number of lost teeth in adulthood (coefficient -0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.80, -0.41; F = 37.47). The probability of CHD was significantly higher by 1.04 percentage points (95% CI 0.57, 1.50) per lost tooth. The effect of tooth loss on stroke was significant only for people aged ≥60 y (coefficient 0.93 percentage points; 95% CI 0.14, 1.71). These findings are supportive of a causal effect of tooth loss on cardiovascular diseases among US adults, particularly in older age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients' experiences, feelings, and perceptions play key roles in quality of life and dental care quality, but they are poorly understood in periodontal disease. Therefore, this meta-synthesis aimed to gain deep insights into the feelings, experiences, and perceptions of people living with periodontal disease. METHODS Electronic database searches in PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Open AIRE were conducted up to December 2021 (updated in June 2022). The JBI Critical Appraisal Tool was used for quality assessment. Then reviewers integrated findings from qualitative studies with a thematic synthesis approach. RESULTS A total of 567 studies were identified, of which eight involving 131 participants met the inclusion criteria. Studies were conducted between 2008 and 2021within Europe (Sweden and UK), Asia (Korea, Indonesia, and Singapore), and Oceania (New Zealand). Three analytical themes with nine descriptive themes emerged from the qualitative data. The themes were as follows: (1) "pressure (physical, psychosocial, and financial)," (2) "coping and adaptation (avoidance of the status quo, trying to understand it, and taking responsibility for their own)," (3) "reflection and evaluation (exploring the causes, personal control, and calling for better dental care)." CONCLUSIONS This review provides insights into how patients perceive and cope with periodontal disease. The findings highlighted patient-centered care in PD, and based on the findings, it is possible to provide more precise and efficient interventions for better patient compliance and treatment outcomes.

Abstract
Background
The aim of this study was to assess the income-related inequality of edentulism among the aged in China and identify the contributing factors.
Methods
A secondary analysis of data from the 4th National Oral Health Epidemiology Survey in China was conducted, and 65–74 years old were selected for the analysis of income-related inequality of edentulism. The concentration curve, Concentration index (CI) and Erreygers-corrected concentration index (EI) were used to represent inequality and its degree qualitatively and quantitatively, respectively. A decomposition method based on probit model was employed to determine the contributors of inequality, including demographic factors, income status, oral health-related knowledge, attitude and practices and self-perceived general health status.
Results
In China, aged people with edentulism were concentrated in the poor. The CI was − 0.2337 (95% CIs: − 0.3503, − 0.1170). The EI was − 0.0413 (95% CIs: − 0.0619, − 0.0207). The decomposition results showed that income (75.02%) and oral health-related knowledge, attitude and practices (15.52%) were the main contributors to the inequality.
Conclusion
This study showed that pro-poor inequality among the elderly with edentulism existed in China. Corresponding policies against the contributors could be considered to promote the health equality of the elders.

Abstract
Stroke and poor oral health are common in older people, and the brain injuries associated with stroke are often accompanied by a decline in oral function. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of stroke patients who could not recover oral ingestion until discharge and the association between improved oral health, swallowing function, and nutritional intake methods in acute care. The subjects were 216 consecutive stroke patients who were admitted to Tokyo Medical and Dental University hospital and received oral health management. Nutritional intake, dysphagia, and oral health were evaluated using the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), Dysphagia Severity Scale (DSS), and Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT), respectively. Patients in the tube feeding group (FOIS level 1-2, N = 68) tended to have a worse general condition, fewer functional teeth, and a worse DSS level than those in the oral nutrition group (FOIS level 3-7, N = 148). Multiple analysis with improvement in FOIS score as the dependent variable showed that number of functional teeth (odds ratio [OR]: 1.08, p = 0.04) and improved DSS (OR: 7.44, p < 0.001) and OHAT values (OR: 1.23, p = 0.048) were associated with improvement in nutritional intake methods in acute care. Therefore, recovery of swallowing function and oral health might be important for stroke patients to recover oral ingestion in acute care.
