Biodegradable plastic formulated from chitosan of Aristeus antennatus shells with castor oil as a plasticizer agent and starch as a filling substrate

Biodegradable plastics are those subjected easily to a degradation process, in which they can be decomposed after disposal in the environment through microbial activity. 30 bioplastic film formulations based only on chitosan film were used in the current investigation as a positive control together with chitosan film recovered from chitin-waste of locally obtained Aristeus antennatus. Additionally, castor oil was used as a plasticizer. While the yield of chitosan was 18% with 7.65% moisture content and 32.27% ash in the shells, the isolated chitin had a degree of deacetylation (DD) of 86%. The synthesized bioplastic films were characterized via numerous criteria. Firstly, the swelling capacity of these biofilms recorded relatively high percentages compared to polypropylene as synthetic plastic. Noticeably, the FTIR profiles, besides DSC, TGA, and XRD, confirmed the acceptable characteristics of these biofilms. In addition, their SEM illustrated the homogeneity and continuity with a few straps of the chitosan film and showed the homogeneous mixes of chitosan and castor oil with 5 and 20%. Moreover, data detected the antibacterial activity of different bioplastic formulas against some common bacterial pathogens (Enterococcus feacalis, Kelbsiella pnumina, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Amazingly, our bioplastic films have conducted potent antimicrobial activities. So, they may be promising in such a direction. Further, the biodegradability efficacy of bioplastic films formed was proved in numerous environments for several weeks of incubation. However, all bioplastic films decreased in their weights and changed in their colors, while polypropylene, was very constant all the time. The current findings suggest that our biofilms may be promising for many applications, especially in the field of food package protecting the food, and preventing microbial contamination, consequently, it may help in extending the shelf life of products.

Chitosan nanogel aqueous treatment improved blood biochemicals, antioxidant capacity, immune response, immune-related gene expression and infection resistance of Nile tilapia

Candida albicans is a pathogenic yeast recently associated with diverse diseases in aquaculture. The present study investigated the efficacy of chitosan nanogel (CNG) in ameliorating effects of C. albicans on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish were randomly distributed into four groups (control, waterborne CNG at 75 μg/L, intraperitoneally challenged with C. albicans (1.8 × 107 CFU/mL), and waterborne CNG at 75 μg/L + C. albicans at 1.8 × 107 CFU/mL). Results showed that C. albicans infection reduced survival rate (57.5%) and caused marked clinical symptoms in fish among all infected groups. Substantial declines in immunological (complement 3, lysozyme, and immunoglobulin M), protein (total protein and non-albumin protein), and antioxidant (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase) biochemical endpoints were exhibited, The C. albicans infected group also showed marked down-regulation in the expression of immune-related genes, including toll-like receptor 2 (TLR-2), transforming growth factor beta2, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukins (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10), and antiapoptotic gene (B-cell lymphoma, BCL-2). The expression of the apoptotic gene (Bcl-2 associated X protein, BAX) was up-regulated in fish challenged by C. albicans. The application of waterborne CNG to fish challenged with C. albicans infection improved fish survival (79.5%) and all other measured parameters. The main finding of this work was that CNG is a nanotechnology with potential for preventing degraded health status by C. albicans infection in tilapia, and thus has promise as an intervention in aquaculture settings.

Biowelding 3D-Printed Biodigital Brick of Seashell-Based Biocomposite by Pleurotus ostreatus Mycelium

Mycelium biocomposites are eco-friendly, cheap, easy to produce, and have competitive mechanical properties. However, their integration in the built environment as durable and long-lasting materials is not solved yet. Similarly, biocomposites from recycled food waste such as seashells have been gaining increasing interest recently, thanks to their sustainable impact and richness in calcium carbonate and chitin. The current study tests the mycelium binding effect to bioweld a seashell biocomposite 3D-printed brick. The novelty of this study is the combination of mycelium and a non-agro-based substrate, which is seashells. As well as testing the binding capacity of mycelium in welding the lattice curvilinear form of the V3 linear Brick model (V3-LBM). Thus, the V3-LBM is 3D printed in three separate profiles, each composed of five layers of 1 mm/layer thickness, using seashell biocomposite by paste extrusion and testing it for biowelding with Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium to offer a sustainable, ecofriendly, biomineralized brick. The biowelding process investigated the penetration and binding capacity of the mycelium between every two 3D-printed profiles. A cellulose-based culture medium was used to catalyse the mycelium growth. The mycelium biowelding capacity was investigated by SEM microscopy and EDX chemical analysis of three samples from the side corner (S), middle (M), and lateral (L) zones of the biowelded brick. The results revealed that the best biowelding effect was recorded at the corner and lateral zones of the brick. The SEM images exhibited the penetration and the bridging effect achieved by the dense mycelium. The EDX revealed the high concentrations of carbon, oxygen, and calcium at all the analyzed points on the SEM images from all three samples. An inverted relationship between carbon and oxygen as well as sodium and potassium concentrations were also detected, implying the active metabolic interaction between the fungal hyphae and the seashell-based biocomposite. Finally, the results of the SEM-EDX analysis were applied to design favorable tessellation and staking methods for the V3-LBM from the seashell-mycelium composite to deliver enhanced biowelding effect along the Z axis and the XY axis with <1 mm tessellation and staking tolerance.

Nanoparticles of ZnO-Chitosan (Zn-Chit) composite were prepared using precipitation methods. Several analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmitted electron microscope (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and thermal analysis, were used to characterize the prepared composite. The activity of the modified composite was investigated for nitrite sensing and hydrogen production applications using various electrochemical techniques. A comparative study was performed for pristine ZnO and ZnO loaded on chitosan. The modified Zn-Chit has a linear range of detection 1–150 µM and a limit of detection (LOD) = 0.402 µM (response time ~3 s). The activity of the modified electrode was investigated in a real sample (milk). Furthermore, the anti-interference capability of the surface was utilized in the presence of several inorganic salts and organic additives. Additionally, Zn-Chit composite was employed as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen production in an acidic medium. Thus, the electrode showed long-term stability toward fuel production and enhanced energy security. The electrode reached a current density of 50 mA cm−2 at an overpotential equal to −0.31 and −0.2 V (vs. RHE) for GC/ZnO and GC/Zn-Chit, respectively. Electrode durability was studied for long-time constant potential chronoamperometry for 5 h. The electrodes lost 8% and 9% of the initial current for GC/ZnO and GC/Zn-Chit, respectively.

Research Progress in Enzymatically Cross-Linked Hydrogels as Injectable Systems for Bioprinting and Tissue Engineering

Hydrogels have been developed for different biomedical applications such as in vitro culture platforms, drug delivery, bioprinting and tissue engineering. Enzymatic cross-linking has many advantages for its ability to form gels in situ while being injected into tissue, which facilitates minimally invasive surgery and adaptation to the shape of the defect. It is a highly biocompatible form of cross-linking, which permits the harmless encapsulation of cytokines and cells in contrast to chemically or photochemically induced cross-linking processes. The enzymatic cross-linking of synthetic and biogenic polymers also opens up their application as bioinks for engineering tissue and tumor models. This review first provides a general overview of the different cross-linking mechanisms, followed by a detailed survey of the enzymatic cross-linking mechanism applied to both natural and synthetic hydrogels. A detailed analysis of their specifications for bioprinting and tissue engineering applications is also included.

Application of depolymerized chitosan in crop production: A review

Currently, chitosan (CHT) is well known for its uses, particularly in veterinary and agricultural fields. However, chitosan's uses suffer greatly due to its extremely solid crystalline structure, it is insoluble at pH levels above or equal to 7. This has sped up the process of derivatizing and depolymerizing it into low molecular weight chitosan (LMWCHT). As a result of its diverse physicochemical as well as biological features which include antibacterial activity, non-toxicity, and biodegradability, LMWCHT has evolved into new biomaterials with extremely complex functions. The most important physicochemical and biological property is antibacterial, which has some degree of industrialization today. CHT and LMWCHT have potential due to the antibacterial and plant resistance-inducing properties when applied in crop production. This study has highlighted the many advantages of chitosan derivatives as well as the most recent studies on low molecular weight chitosan applications in crop development.

Explanation of difenoconazole removal by chitosan with Langmuir adsorption isotherm and kinetic modeling

In this study, the adsorption of toxic difenoconazole pesticide was investigated by using chitosan. In the first phase of the study, chitosan was extracted from deep-water pink shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) shells, by deacetylation of the chitin, which is separated and disposed of after meat extraction in processing facilities in Turkey. The deacetylation degree, molecular weight, viscosity, moisture, and crude-ash values of the extracted chitosan were determined. Chitosan, having a high deacetylation degree (90.21%), was used as the adsorbent. In the second phase of the study, the effects of pH, temperature, and pesticide concentration on the adsorption were investigated. The optimum pH level for pesticide adsorption was determined as 5. It was observed that the adsorption increases as the temperature increases. A rapid increase was observed within the first 5 min of the 60-minute adsorption process in difenoconazole concentrations of 5, 15, and 25 µg/L, and after 10 min, the adsorption rate was stable. The Langmuir isotherm parameters regarding the adsorption were determined as aL = 0.635, kL = 15.10, and the Qmax value was calculated as 23.77 mg/g. In the evaluation of overall study results, it was determined that the chitosan biopolymer is a suitable adsorbent for difenoconazole pesticide adsorption.

Sulfamic acid grafted to cross-linked chitosan by dendritic units: a bio-based, highly efficient and heterogeneous organocatalyst for green synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline derivatives

In this work, novel cross-linked chitosan by the G1 dendrimer from condensation of melamine and toluene-2,4-diisocyante terminated by sulfamic acid groups (CS-TDI-Me-TDI-NHSO₃H), as a bio-based and heterogeneous acidic organocatalyst, was designed and prepared. Also, the structure of the prepared organocatalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry (TGA/DTA). Subsequently, the catalytic performance of the biobased and dendritic CS-TDI-Me-TDI-NHSO₃H, as a multifunctional solid acid, was evaluated for the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline derivatives through a three-component reaction by following green chemistry principles. Some of the advantages of this new protocol include high to excellent yields and short reaction times as well as easy preparation and remarkable catalyst stability of the introduced acidic organocatalyst. The CS-TDI-Me-TDI-SO₃H catalyst can be used for up to five cycles for the preparation of quinazoline derivatives with a slight decrease in its catalytic activity.

Preparation and properties of CS/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels by frontal polymerization of ternary DES

A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared from choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA); chitosan (CS) was used as a filler, and CS/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels were prepared by frontal polymerization (FP). The hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties, pH responsiveness and conductivity of the hydrogel were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were significantly improved by adding CS, and the tensile strength and compressive strength were increased by 11.61 and 1.65 times respectively due to the increase in number of hydrogen bonds. At the same time, due to the presence of AA, the composite hydrogel has excellent pH response and super high swelling performance under alkaline conditions. The introduction of CS enhanced the conductivity of the hydrogel and gradually increased with the increase of CS content. The conductivity of the hydrogel with CS content of 10 wt% was nearly 160 times that of the hydrogel without CS. In this study, a more convenient and rapid method was proposed to prepare conductive composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and pH responsiveness.

Recent Advances of Chitosan Formulations in Biomedical Applications

Chitosan, a naturally abundant cationic polymer, is chemically composed of cellulose-based biopolymers derived by deacetylating chitin. It offers several attractive characteristics such as renewability, hydrophilicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity towards gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi, etc., because of which it is receiving immense attention as a biopolymer for a plethora of applications including drug delivery, protective coating materials, food packaging films, wastewater treatment, and so on. Additionally, its structure carries reactive functional groups that enable several reactions and electrochemical interactions at the biomolecular level and improves the chitosan’s physicochemical properties and functionality. This review article highlights the extensive research about the properties, extraction techniques, and recent developments of chitosan-based composites for drug, gene, protein, and vaccine delivery applications. Its versatile applications in tissue engineering and wound healing are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives for chitosan in biomedical applications are elucidated.

A comprehensive review of food gels: formation mechanisms, functions, applications, and challenges

Gels refer to the soft and flexible macromolecular polymeric materials retaining a large amount of water or biofluids in their three-dimensional network structure. Gels have attracted increasing interest in the food discipline, especially proteins and polysaccharides, due to their good biocompatibility, biodegradability, nutritional properties, and edibility. With the advancement of living standards, people's demand for nutritious, safe, reliable, and functionally diverse food and even personalized food has increased. As a result, gels exhibiting unique advantages in food application will be of great significance. However, a comprehensive review of functional hydrogels as food gels is still lacking. Here, we comprehensively review the gel-forming mechanisms of food gels and systematically classify them. Moreover, the potential of hydrogels as functional foods in different types of food areas is summarized, with a special focus on their applications in food packaging, satiating gels, nutrient delivery systems, food coloring adsorption, and food safety monitoring. Additionally, the key scientific issues for future food gel research, with specific reference to future novel food designs, mechanisms between food components and matrices, food gel-human interactions, and food gel safety, are discussed. Finally, the future directions of hydrogels for food science and technology are summarized.

Effects of different degrees of deacetylation and levels of chitosan on performance, egg traits and serum biochemistry of laying hens

The present study was conducted to evaluate whether the deacetylation degree of chitosan (low: 70% vs. high: 90%) and its dietary level (0, 200, 400, 800, 1600 mg/kg diet) would affect laying performance, faeces viscosity, egg quality, egg and serum biochemistry of layers. For the experimental feeding period of 8 weeks, 140 four weeks old Hisex Brown layers were divided into 10 treatment groups, comprising 14 birds each. The birds were housed in individual cages in a complete randomised design. Performance was assessed by recording feed intake, egg weight, daily egg production, egg quality and egg biochemistry. Serum biochemistry parameters were determined at the beginning and end of the experiment and faeces viscosity at the end of the experiment. Feed conversion ratio and faeces viscosity were deteriorated by increased level of chitosan. Lightness of egg yolk was significantly increased in animals receiving high-degree deacetylated chitosan compared to low-degree deacetylated chitosan. Yellowness of egg yolk was affected by interaction of deacetylation degree and level of chitosan. Yolk cholesterol concentration was lower in groups receiving high deacetylated chitosan by increasing chitosan level, while laying hens fed low deacetylated chitosan had a higher level of yolk cholesterol. A significant interaction between degree of deacetylation and chitosan level was determined for serum glucose and calcium concentration. Serum total antioxidant content increased with higher levels of dietary chitosan. In conclusion, dietary level or different degrees of deacetylated chitosan may reduce yolk cholesterol and improve serum antioxidant status. However, feed conversion ratio and faeces viscosity were impaired by increasing levels of chitosan supplementation, and lightness of yolk was increased by supplementation of chitosan with a high degree of deacetylation.

Effect of Chitosan Solution on Low-Cohesive Soil’s Shear Modulus G Determined through Resonant Column and Torsional Shearing Tests

In this study the effect of using a biopolymer soil stabilizer on soil stiffness characteristics was investigated. Chitosan is a bio-waste material that is obtained by chemical treatment of chitin (a chemical component of fungi or crustaceans’ shells). Using chitosan solution as a soil stabilizer is based on the assumption that the biopolymer forms temporary bonds with soil particles. What is important is that these bonds are biodegradable, so the product does not leave any harmful waste and has high eco-compatibility. The biopolymer itself is a by-product of many industrial chemical processes, so its application is compliant with the goals of sustainable geotechnical engineering. The effect of chitosan on soil shear strength, permeability or surface erosion has already been investigated in several different studies. In this study specimens of low-cohesive soil stabilized with two different chitosan solutions were subject to cyclic loading (torsional shearing test) and dynamic loading (resonant column) to obtain soil shear modulus G as a function of strain values. It has been shown that chitosan solution added to medium-grained materials improves their shear modulus G substantially (up to 3 times) even for relatively low chitosan concentration solutions (1.5 g of chitosan per 1 kg of dry silica sand). The results obtained in this study and the known chitosan properties suggest that chitosan solutions can be a very effective and eco-friendly short-term stabilizer for temporary geotechnical structures, e.g., working platforms.

Treatment of residual pockets using an oscillating chitosan device versus regular curettes alone-A randomized, feasibility parallel-arm clinical trial

BACKGROUND

A brush made of chitosan has shown to be an effective and harmless device for non-surgical treatment of mild to moderate peri-implantitis. To date, no study has evaluated the use of a chitosan brush in the non-surgical treatment of residual pockets in periodontal treatment.

METHODS

Seventy-eight patients with periodontitis were included in this multicenter, randomized, examiner-blind clinical trial of 6 months duration. Patients with residual probing pocket depth (PPD) of ≥5 mm and ≤7 mm following previous active periodontal treatment were included. Patients were assigned either subgingival treatment with curettes (control) or an oscillating chitosan brush (test). Changes in bleeding on probing (BoP) and PPD between baseline and terminal evaluation at 6 months were evaluated.

RESULTS

A significant reduction in both PPD and BoP was seen within both groups. There was no significant difference in BoP between test and control groups after 6 months, but the reduction in PPD was significantly improved in the test group (P ≤ 0.01). The combined outcome of no BOP and PPD ≤4 mm was significantly better in the test group (P ≤ 0.01). No adverse reactions were seen.

CONCLUSION

Treatment of residual periodontal pockets (PPD = 5 to 7 mm) with a chitosan brush disclosed equal or better clinical results as compared to regular curettes. This study supports that a chitosan brush can be used for subgingival biofilm removal and soft tissue curretage in the treatment of periodontitis.

Hyaluronic acid and chitosan-based electrospun wound dressings: Problems and solutions

To date, available review papers related to the electrospinning of biopolymers including polysaccharides for wound healing were focused on summarizing the process conditions for two candidates, namely chitosan and hyaluronic acid. However, most reviews lack the discussion of problems of hyaluronan and chitosan electrospun nanofibers for wound dressing applications. For this reason, it is required to update information by providing a comprehensive overview of all factors which may play a role in the electrospinning of hyaluronic acid and chitosan for applications of wound dressings. This review summarizes the fabricated chitosan and hyaluronic acid electrospun nanofibers as wound dressings in the last years, including methods of preparations of nanofibers and challenges for the electrospinning of both pure chitosan and hyaluronic acid and strategies how to overcome the existing difficulties. Moreover, in this review the biological roles and mechanisms of chitosan and hyaluronic acid in the wound healing process are explained including the advantages of nanofibers for ideal wound management using the common solvents, copolymers enhancing spinning process, and the most biologically active incorporated substances thereby providing drug delivery in wound healing.

Study of the Nanofibers Fabrication Conditions from the Mixture of Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) and Chitosan by Electrospinning Method

Nanofiber fabrication is attracting great attention from scientists and technologists due to its applications in many fields of life. In order to design a nanosized polymer-based drug delivery system, we studied the conditions for the fabrication of electrospun nanofibers from poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS), which are well-known as biocompatible, biodegradable and non-toxic polymers that are widely used in the medical field. Aiming to develop nanofibers that can directly target diseased cells for treatment, such as cancerous cells, the ideal choice would be a system that contains the highest CS content as well as high quality fibers. In the present manuscript, it is expected to become the basis for improving the low bioavailability of medicinal drugs limited by poor solubility and low permeability. PVA–CS nanofibers were obtained by electrospinning at a PVA:CS ratio of 5:5 in a 60% (w/w) acetic acid solution under the following parameters: voltage 30 kV, feed rate 0.2 mL/h, needle-collector distance 14 cm. The obtained fibers were relatively uniform, with a diameter range of 77–292 nm and average diameter of 153 nm. The nanofiber system holds promise as a potential material for the integration of therapeutic drugs.

Bio-Based (Chitosan-ZnO) Nanocomposite: Synthesis, Characterization, and Its Use as Recyclable, Ecofriendly Biocatalyst for Synthesis of Thiazoles Tethered Azo Groups

In recent years, nanotechnology has become a considerable research interest in the area of preparation of nanocatalysts based on naturally occurring polysaccharides. Chitosan (CS), as a naturally occurring biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharide, is successfully utilized as an ideal template for the immobilization of metal oxide nanoparticles. In this study, zinc oxide nanoparticles have been doped within a chitosan matrix at dissimilar weight percentages (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt.% CS/ZnO) and have been fabricated by using a simple solution casting method. The prepared solutions of the nanocomposites were cast in a Petri-dish and were subsequently shaped as a thin film. After that, the structural features of the nanocomposite film have been studied by measuring the FTIR, SEM, and XRD analytical tools. FTIR spectra showed the presence of some changes in the major characteristic peaks of chitosan due to interaction with ZnO nanoparticles. In addition, SEM graphs exhibited dramatic morphology changes on the chitosan surface, which is attributed to the surface adsorption of ZnO molecules. Based on the results of the investigated organic catalytic reactions, the prepared CS/ZnO nanocomposite film (20 wt.%) could be a viable an effective, recyclable, and heterogeneous base catalyst in the synthesis of thiazoles. The results showed that the nanocomposite film is chemically stable and can be collected and reused in the investigated catalytic reactions more than three times without loss of its catalytic activity.

Angiogenic potential and wound healing efficacy of chitosan derived hydrogels at varied concentrations of APTES in chick and mouse models

Chitosan (Cs) based biomaterials seem to be indispensable for neovasculogenesis and angiogenesis that ensure accelerated wound healing. Cs/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) bio-constructs were cross-linked and investigated with varying concentrations of aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). This study comprised of three phases: fabrication of hydrogels, characterization, assessment of angiogenic potential along with toxico-pathological effects, wound healing efficacy in chick and mice, respectively. The hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, SEM and TGA and the swelling response was examined in different solvents. The hydrogels swelling ratio was decreased with increasing amount of APTES, showed the highest swelling at acidic and basic pH while low swelling at neutral pH. Chorioallantoic membranes (CAM) assay was performed to study in-vivo angiogenesis, toxicological, morphological, biochemical and histological analyses in developing chicks. The results showed remarkably improved angiogenesis with little deviations in morphological, histological features and liver enzymes of chick embryos at higher concentrations of APTES. Besides, full thickness wounds were excised on mice dorsolateral skin to assess the wound healing. The rate of wound size reduction was significantly higher after topical application of hydrogels with elevated levels of crosslinker. Hence, the hydrogels showed enhanced angiogenesis, accelerated wound healing with little or no observable in-vivo toxicity.

Chemically enhanced primary treatment of dairy wastewater using chitosan obtained from shrimp wastes: optimization using a Doehlert matrix design

Dairy operations generate large volumes of polluted wastewater that require treatment prior to discharge. Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) is a widely utilized wastewater treatment strategy; but it requires the use of non-biodegradable coagulants that can lead to toxic-byproducts. In this study, chitin from shrimp shell waste is extracted and converted into chitosan. Chitosan was demonstrated to be a natural, low-cost alternative coagulant compatible with the CEPT. Following treatment, dissolved air flotation allowed for the removal of turbidity, COD, and UV₂₅₄ from the synthetic dairy effluent (SDE). Doehlert matrix was used to optimize the chitosan dosage and pH of the CEPT; as well as to model the process. The mechanisms behind the coagulation-flocculation were revealed using zeta potential analysis. FTIR spectroscopy was utilized to confirm the functional groups present on the chitosan. Chitosan with a degree of deacetylation equal to 81% was obtained. A chitosan dose of 73.34 mg/L at pH 5.00 was found to be optimal for the removal of pollutants. Removals of COD, turbidity and UV₂₅₄ were 77.5%, 97.6%, and 88.8%, respectively. The amount of dry sludge generated to treat 1 m³ of SDE was 0.041 kg. Coagulation-flocculation mechanisms involved in chitosan-mediated treatment of SDE involve the neutralization of electrostatic charges carried on the amine groups present in cationic chitosan at pH 5.00. Doehlert matrix proved to be a useful tool in optimizing parameters throughout the coagulation-flocculation process. Chitosan from shrimp waste is a low-cost, eco-friendly coagulant alternative for the removal pollutants from dairy effluent using the CEPT.

An improved extraction and purification method for obtaining high-quality chitin and chitosan from blue swimmer (Portunus pelagicus) crab shell waste

Portunus pelagicus shell waste is highly accumulated in seafood processing factories and has low commercial applications. The objective of this study was to modify and develop a scale-up, simple, and high-yielding chemical method for extraction and purification of chitin and chitosan from P. pelagicus shell waste. The developed method included a new "pretreatment" process using acetic acid followed by chemical treatments at each purification step. The final product was characterized by XRD and FTIR spectroscopy. Control chitin and chitosan were produced using a pre-described method for comparison. Yields of crude chitin, chitosan, and purified chitosan were 32.52 ± 0.68%, 26.28 ± 0.47%, and 21.78 ± 0.34% respectively whereas in the control chitin and chitosan the yields were 20.34 ± 0.72% and 13.79 ± 0.93% respectively (p < 0.05). Better physicochemical and functional properties were recorded in the developed method (p < 0.05). Hence the developed methodology can be scaled up and used in industrial applications.

Biomedical potential of β-chitosan from cuttlebone of cephalopods

Polymeric β-chitosan allomorph characterized by parallel arrangement of linear polysaccharide comprised of β-(1 → 4)-linked-D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine was isolated and characterized from the gladius of Indian Ocean Squid (Uroteuthis duvaucelii) and spineless cuttlefish (Sepiella inermis). The β-chitosan from U. duvaucelii displayed considerably greater attenuation potential against hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme-A reductase, dipeptidyl peptidase-4, I converting enzyme, and 5-lipoxygenase (IC₅₀ 0.15-0.53 mg mL^-1) than those exhibited by α-chitosan of comparable molecular weight. Comparatively lesser conformational rigidity of β-chitin could result in its greater susceptibility to deacetylation (86-87%) contrasted to the α-allomorph (~83%), consequently delivering enhanced functionalities than those exhibited by α-chitosan. Porous β-chitosan scaffolds displayed an average pore size of lesser than 50 μm, and its binding capacity was significantly higher than that exhibited by α-chitosan (p < 0.05). Potential pharmacological activities reinforced by lesser binding affinities and intermolecular energy of β-chitosan with the target enzymes recognized its prospective biomedical applications.

Recent advances of emerging green chitosan-based biomaterials with potential biomedical applications: A review

Chitosan is the most abundant natural biopolymer, after cellulose. It is mainly derived from the fungi, shrimp's shells, and exoskeleton of crustaceans, through the deacetylation of chitin. The ecological sustainability associated with its exercise and the flexibility of chitosan owing to its active functional hydroxyl and amino groups makes it a promising candidate for a wide range of applications through a variety of modifications. The biodegradability and biocompatibility of chitosan and its derivatives along with their various chemical functionalities make them promising carriers for pharmaceutical, nutritional, medicinal, environmental, agriculture, drug delivery, and biotechnology applications. The present work aims to provide a detailed and organized description of modified chitosan and its derivatives-based nanomaterials for biomedical applications. We addressed the biological and physicochemical benefits of nanocomposite materials made up of chitosan and its derivatives in various formulations, including improved physicochemical stability and cells/tissue interaction, controlled drug release, and increased bioavailability and efficacy in clinical practice. Moreover, several modification techniques and their effective utilization are also reviewed and collected in this review.

Reviewing Chitin/Chitosan Nanofibers and Associated Nanocomposites and Their Attained Medical Milestones

Chitin/chitosan research is an expanding field with wide scope within polymer research. This topic is highly inviting as chitin/chitosan's are natural biopolymers that can be recovered from food waste and hold high potentials for medical applications. This review gives a brief overview of the chitin/chitosan based nanomaterials, their preparation methods and their biomedical applications. Chitin nanofibers and Chitosan nanofibers have been reviewed, their fabrication methods presented and their biomedical applications summarized. The chitin/chitosan based nanocomposites have also been discussed. Chitin and chitosan nanofibers and their binary and ternary composites are represented by scattered superficial reports. Delving deep into synergistic approaches, bringing up novel chitin/chitosan nanocomposites, could help diligently deliver medical expectations. This review highlights such lacunae and further lapses in chitin related inputs towards medical applications. The grey areas and future outlook for aligning chitin/chitosan nanofiber research are outlined as research directions for the future.

Effect of hydrophobicity and molar mass on the capacity of chitosan and κ-carrageenan to stabilize water in water emulsions

A range of commercial chitosan samples with different molar masses and degrees of acetylation was tested for their capacity to stabilize water in water (W/W) emulsions formed by mixing aqueous solutions of dextran and poly (ethylene oxide). To further understand the effect of the acetylation degree, commercial samples were acetylated and deacetylated to different degrees. The effect of pH and chitosan concentration on the stability was investigated. The lowest investigated degree of acetylation (6%) was sufficient to inhibit coalescence, but higher degrees that were studied (up to 50%) led to faster stabilization resulting in smaller stable dispersed droplets that did not sediment for at least one week. The effect of hydrophobic acetyl units on the stability was confirmed for κ-carrageenan that could stabilize the W/W emulsion only after acetylation. For chitosan it was shown that the molar mass should be above a critical value independent of the degree of acetylation.

Green Synthesized Chitosan/Chitosan Nanoforms/Nanocomposites for Drug Delivery Applications

Chitosan has become a highlighted polymer, gaining paramount importance and research attention. The fact that this valuable polymer can be extracted from food industry-generated shell waste gives it immense value. Chitosan, owing to its biological and physicochemical properties, has become an attractive option for biomedical applications. This review briefly runs through the various methods involved in the preparation of chitosan and chitosan nanoforms. For the first time, we consolidate the available scattered reports on the various attempts towards greens synthesis of chitosan, chitosan nanomaterials, and chitosan nanocomposites. The drug delivery applications of chitosan and its nanoforms have been reviewed. This review points to the lack of systematic research in the area of green synthesis of chitosan. Researchers have been concentrating more on recovering chitosan from marine shell waste through chemical and synthetic processes that generate toxic wastes, rather than working on eco-friendly green processes-this is projected in this review. This review draws the attention of researchers to turn to novel and innovative green processes. More so, there are scarce reports on the application of green synthesized chitosan nanoforms and nanocomposites towards drug delivery applications. This is another area that deserves research focus. These have been speculated and highlighted as future perspectives in this review.

Structure-property-processing correlations of longitudinal freeze-cast chitosan scaffolds for biomedical applications

Needed for the custom-design of longitudinally freeze-cast chitosan scaffolds for biomedical applications are systematic structure-property-processing correlations. Combining mechanical testing in compression with both scanning electron microscopy and semiautomated confocal microscopy for a quantitative structural characterization of fully hydrated chitosan scaffolds, robust correlations were determined. Decreasing the applied cooling rate from 10 °C/min to 0.1 °C/min, the short and long axes of the pore cross-sections, the pore aspect ratio, and the pore area were found to increase from 68.0 μm to 120.5 μm, from 189.2 μm to 401.2 μm, from 2.64 to 3.52, and from 8,922 μm² to 35,596 μm², respectively. Values for the scaffolds' modulus, yield strength, and toughness range from 1,067 kPa to 3,209 kPa, from 37.7 kPa to 75.5 kPa, and from 20.3 kJ/m³ to 35.3 kJ/m³, respectively. Because of additional structural features, such as cell wall stiffening ridges, affecting the mechanical properties, not linear but more complex correlation with modulus, yield strength, and toughness were observed. Contrasting the results of this study with those obtained in an earlier study of dry and fully hydrated collagen scaffolds, we were able to identify features that are important and peculiar to each material system. Highlighted in this study are newly determined robust structure-property-processing correlations as well as processing conditions and features that are critical for the mechanical performance of chitosan and other biopolymer scaffolds made by freeze casting for biomedical applications.

Potential applications of polycarbohydrates, lignin, proteins, polyacids, and other renewable materials for the formulation of green elastomers

Renewable resources including polycarbohydrates, lignin, proteins, and polyacids are the intrinsically valuable class of materials that are naturally available in great quantities. Their utilization as green additives and reinforcing bio-fillers, in substitution of environmentally perilous petroleum-based fillers, for developing high-performance green rubber blends and composites is presently a highly tempting option. Blending of these renewable materials with elastomers is not straight-forward and research needs to exploit the high functionality of carbohydrates and other natural materials as proper physicochemical interactions are essential. Correlating and understanding the structural properties of lignin, carbohydrates, polyacids, and other biopolymers, before their incorporation in elastomers, is a potential approach towards the development of green elastomers for value-added applications. Promising properties i.e., biodegradability, biocompatibility, morphological characteristics, high mechanical properties, thermal stability, sustainability, and various other characteristics along with recent advancements in the development of green elastomers are reviewed in this paper. Structures, viability, interactions, properties, and use of most common natural polycarbohydrates (chitosan and starch), lignin, and proteins (collagen and gelatin) for elastomer modification are extensively reviewed. Challenges in commercialization, applications, and future perspectives of green elastomers are also discussed. Sustainability analysis of green elastomers is accomplished to elaborate their cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness.

Polysaccharides-Based Complex Particles' Protective Role on the Stability and Bioactivity of Immobilized Curcumin

The curcumin degradation represents a significant limitation for its applications. The stability of free curcumin (FC) and immobilized curcumin in complex particles (ComPs) based on different polysaccharides was studied under the action of several factors. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy proved the FC photodegradation and its role as a metal chelator: 82% of FC and between 26% and 39.79% of curcumin within the ComPs degraded after exposure for 28 days to natural light. The degradation half-life (t_1/2) decreases for FC when the pH increases, from 6.8 h at pH = 3 to 2.1 h at pH = 9. For curcumin extracted from ComPs, t_1/2 was constant (between 10 and 13 h) and depended on the sample’s composition. The total phenol (TPC) and total flavonoids (TFC) content values increased by 16% and 13%, respectively, for FC exposed to ultraviolet light at λ = 365 nm (UVA), whereas no significant change was observed for immobilized curcumin. Antioxidant activity expressed by IC₅₀ (µmoles/mL) for FC exposed to UVA decreased by 29%, but curcumin within ComPs was not affected by the UVA. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption efficiency on the ComPs surface depends on the pH value and the cross-linking degree. ComPs have a protective role for the immobilized curcumin.

Crustacean Waste-Derived Chitosan: Antioxidant Properties and Future Perspective

Chitosan is obtained from chitin that in turn is recovered from marine crustacean wastes. The recovery methods and their varying types and the advantages of the recovery methods are briefly discussed. The bioactive properties of chitosan, which emphasize the unequivocal deliverables contained by this biopolymer, have been concisely presented. The variations of chitosan and its derivatives and their unique properties are discussed. The antioxidant properties of chitosan have been presented and the need for more work targeted towards harnessing the antioxidant property of chitosan has been emphasized. Some portions of the crustacean waste are being converted to chitosan; the possibility that all of the waste can be used for harnessing this versatile multifaceted product chitosan is projected in this review. The future of chitosan recovery from marine crustacean wastes and the need to improve in this area of research, through the inclusion of nanotechnological inputs have been listed under future perspective.

Evaluation of wound healing efficiency of vancomycin-loaded electrospun chitosan/poly ethylene oxide nanofibers in full thickness wound model of rat

Electrospun hybrid nanofibers have been extensively regarded as drug carriers. This study tries to introduce a nano fibrous wound dressing as a new strategy for a topical drug-delivery system. The vancomycin (VCM)-loaded hybrid chitosan/poly ethylene oxide (CH/PEO) nanofibers were fabricated by the blend-electrospinning process. Morphological, mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of nanofibers were examined by SEM, FTIR, release profile study, tensile assay, Alamar Blue cytotoxicity evaluation, and antibacterial activity assay. In vivo wound healing activity of hybrid CH/PEO/VCM nanofibers was evaluated in full-thickness skin wounds of rats. The hybrid CH/PEO/VCM nanofibers were successfully fabricated in a nanometer. The CH/PEO/VCM 2.5% had higher Young's Modulus, better tensile strength, smaller fiber diameter with sustained-release profiles compared to CH/PEO/VCM 5%. All nanofibers did not show any significant cytotoxicity (P < 0.05) on the normal fibroblast cells. Also, VCM-load hybrid CH/PEO nanofibers successfully inhibited bacterial growth. The wound area in the rats treated with CH/PEO/VCM 2.5% was less than CH/PEO/VCM 5% treated group. According to histological evaluation, the CH/PEO/VCM 2.5% group showed the fastest wound healing than other treatment groups. Results of this study proposed that CH/PEO/VCM nanofibers could promote the wound healing process by reducing the side effects of VCM as a topical antimicrobial agent.

Ionotropic Gelation of Chitosan Flat Structures and Potential Applications

The capability of some polymers, such as chitosan, to form low cost gels under mild conditions is of great application interest. Ionotropic gelation of chitosan has been used predominantly for the preparation of gel beads for biomedical application. Only in the last few years has the use of this method been extended to the fabrication of chitosan-based flat structures. Herein, after an initial analysis of the major applications of chitosan flat membranes and films and their usual methods of synthesis, the process of ionotropic gelation of chitosan and some recently proposed novel procedures for the synthesis of flat structures are presented.

Effect of Homogenization Method and Carvacrol Content on Microstructural and Physical Properties of Chitosan-Based Films

The use of EOs nanoemulsion to develop active edible films offers a new way to modify transport properties and to release active compounds while improving mechanical resistance, transparency, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study was to study the influence of homogenization conditions and carvacrol content on the microstructure and physical properties of edible nanoemulsified chitosan films. Film-forming emulsions (FFE) were prepared with chitosan (1.5%), Tween 80 (0.5%), and carvacrol (0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0%); two homogenization methods were used (rotor-stator and rotor-stator followed by high-pressure homogenization). Film internal and surface microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and film physical properties, such as mechanical, optical, and water barrier, were evaluated. Results showed that the high-pressure homogenization method promoted a significant change on film microstructure, leading to improved properties. Carvacrol droplets were smaller and homogeneously distributed in the film when 0.5% (v/v) carvacrol was incorporated (1:1 Tween 80: carvacrol ratio). As a consequence, emulsified films obtained at high pressure were less opaque, had greater elongation, and had a lower permeability to water vapor than those obtained by the rotor-stator method. Therefore, high-pressure homogenization is a good method to obtain edible emulsified films with desirable properties for food preservation.

Characterization of chitosan with different degree of deacetylation and equal viscosity in dissolved and solid state - Insights by various complimentary methods

In recent years, chitosan has attracted considerable interest in many fields due to its sufficient charge density under biological, non-hazardous conditions. Since chitosan originates from natural resources and has two different monomer units, its characterization must be carried out in a goal-oriented and precise manner. This work focuses on the characterization of chitosans most important parameters - solubility, crystallinity, degree of deacetylation (DD) and molecular weight - in a simple and convenient way. The DD was determined using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Particle Charge Detection (PCD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), CHN elemental analysis (CHN-EA) and conductometric/potentiometric titration with special attention to its physical state as solid or liquid. Investigation of DD by FTIR was successfully determined by calculating peak heights, peak areas and peak deconvolution from a linear combination of Gaussian and Lorentzian functions. Asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation with light scattering detection (AF4-LS) was applied in order to calculate molar masses and radii. In addition, pH-potentiometric titrations demonstrated a reproducible displacement of the point of zero charge (PZC) in form of a hysteresis depending on the titration direction. The DD affects the crystallinity, which was determined by deconvolution of the crystalline and amorphous domains.

Small AgNP in the Biopolymer Nanocomposite System

In this work, ultra-small and stable silver nanoparticles (AgNP) on chitosan biopolymer (BP/AgP) were prepared by in situ reduction of the diamminesilver(I) complex ([Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺) to create a biostatic membrane system. The small AgNP (3 nm) as a stable source of silver ions, their crystal form, and homogeneous distribution in the whole solid membrane were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger analysis were applied to investigate the elemental composition, concentration, and chemical state of surface atoms. It was found that ultra-small metallic nanoparticles might form a steady source of silver ions and enhance the biostatic properties of solid membranes. Ultra-small AgNP with disturbed electronic structure and plasmonic properties may generate interaction between amine groups of the biopolymer for improving the homogeneity of the nanometallic layer. In this work, the significant differences between the typical way (deposition of ex-situ-prepared AgNP) and the proposed in-situ synthesis approach were determined. The improved thermal stability (by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) analysis) for BP/AgP was observed and explained by the presence of the protective layer of a low-molecular silver phase. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the BP/AgP nanocomposite was tested using selected bacteria biofilms. The grafted membrane showed clear inhibition properties by destruction and multiple damages of bacteria cells. The possible mechanisms of biocidal activity were discussed, and the investigation of the AgNP influence on the bacteria body was illustrated by AFM measurements. The results obtained concluded that the biopolymer membrane properties were significantly improved by the integration with ultra-small Ag nanoparticles, which added value to its applications as a biostatic membrane system for filtration and separation issues.

In vitro biological response of human osteoblasts in 3D chitosan sponges with controlled degree of deacetylation and molecular weight

We have studied the effect of chitosan sponges, produced from chitosan batches with distinct degree of deacetylation (DDA) and molecular weight (Mw), on the adhesion, growth and differentiation of primary human osteoblasts with an aim to offer a suitable tool for guided bone regeneration. All the chitosan sponges revealed similar microstructure, irrespective of the DDA (58, 73, 82, 88, and 91 %) and Mw (749, 547, 263, 215, and 170 kDa, respectively). Cell spreading was higher on sponges having a higher DDA. Higher DDA induced a more pronounced increase in alkaline phosphatase activity, osteopontin (OPN), vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and reduction in monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), sclerostin (SOST) and dickkopf related protein-1 as compared to lower DDA. Lower DDA induced the increased secretion of osteoprotegerin and SOST as compared to higher DDA. The combination of higher DDA and Mw induced an increased secretion of VEGF and IL-6, however reduced the secretion of OPN as compared to chitosan with similar DDA but with lower Mw. In summary, the variations in cellular responses to the different chitosan sponges indicate a potential for individual tailoring of desired responses in guided bone regeneration.

A Review on Chitosan's Uses as Biomaterial: Tissue Engineering, Drug Delivery Systems and Cancer Treatment

Chitosan, derived from chitin, is a biopolymer consisting of arbitrarily distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine that exhibits outstanding properties- biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, antibacterial activity, the capacity to form films, and chelating of metal ions. Most of these peculiar properties are attributed to the presence of free protonable amino groups along the chitosan backbone, which also gives it solubility in acidic conditions. Moreover, this biopolymer can also be physically modified, thereby presenting a variety of forms to be developed. Consequently, this polysaccharide is used in various fields, such as tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and cancer treatment. In this sense, this review aims to gather the state-of-the-art concerning this polysaccharide when used as a biomaterial, providing information about its characteristics, chemical modifications, and applications. We present the most relevant and new information about this polysaccharide-based biomaterial's applications in distinct fields and also the ability of chitosan and its various derivatives to selectively permeate through the cancer cell membranes and exhibit anticancer activity, and the possibility of adding several therapeutic metal ions as a strategy to improve the therapeutic potential of this polymer.

Extraction, characterization and bioactivity of chitosan from farms shrimps of Basra province by chemical method

This paper include the extraction of chitin and transformation it to chitosan from the shrimps shells (waste) that grow up at sea farm in Al-Basra Province, the extraction done according to the literatures by two methods the difference between them was in the first step, but other steps were same methods, the results show sample A was higher than sample B in good yield and other physicochemical properties ( moisture, intrinsic viscosity, daacetylation degree, solubility, and fat binding capacity) which were measured to both samples, chitosan samples were characterization with FT-IR spectrum, in addition the biological activity for chitosan was tested against E.coli, P. asparagi, S. aureus, and B. cerus, the results show that sample A has inhibited these bacteria more than sample B.
