Abstract
Aeromonas veronii, an opportunistic pathogen, is known to cause serious infections across various species. In our previous study, we discovered that A. veronii GL2 exhibited a virulence up to ten times greater than that of FO1. To ascertain the factors contributing to the disparity in virulence between the two strains, we conducted a comparative transcriptome analysis. This analysis reveals a significant upregulation (P < 0.05) of the ascR gene in GL2 compared with FO1. Additionally, six differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified within the "Bacterial secretion system" pathway (map03070), with ascR being an essential component of type III secretion system (T3SS). AscR, considered as SctR family export apparatus subunit within the T3SS, has ambiguous roles in the biological properties, gene expression profiles, virulence and colonization of A. veronii. Therefore, we constructed a mutant strain (ΔascR) by homologous recombination. Comparative analysis with the wide-type GL2 reveals no significant differences in terms of colony morphology, growth curve, hemolytic activity and protease activity. However, significant reductions (P < 0.01) were observed in the abilities of biofilm formation and swimming mobility. No remarkable difference was noted in the lengths of flagella. The LD50 value of ΔascR was to be 5.15 times higher than that of GL2. Interestingly, the mRNA expression of ascC, ascD, ascJ and ascI genes in the T3SS, and mshB, mshE, mshK and mshP genes in the MSHA type pili were significantly upregulated (P < 0.05) in ΔascR, potentially due to transcriptional compensation. Further analysis of enzymatic biomarkers revealed that ΔascR might not destruct the recognition of innate immune response in host remarkably, but the colonization levels of A.veronii were significantly suppressed (P < 0.01) in ΔascR group. In conclusion, the ascR gene may be a key determinant in regulating the virulence of A. veronii, and the destruction of the T3SS caused by ascR deficiency results in these notable changes.

Abstract
Previous studies have documented that FOLFOX and XELOX therapies negatively impact the metabolism of skeletal muscle and extra-muscle districts. This pilot study tested whether three-month FOLFOX or XELOX therapy produced changes in plasma amino acid levels (PAAL) (an estimation of whole-body amino acid metabolism) and in plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid hyper oxidation. Fourteen ambulatory, resected patients with colorectal cancer scheduled to receive FOLFOX (n = 9) or XELOX (n = 5) therapy, after overnight fasting, underwent peripheral venous blood sampling, to determine PAAL and MDA before, during, and at the end of three-month therapy. Fifteen healthy matched subjects (controls) only underwent measures of PAAL at baseline. The results showed changes in 87.5% of plasma essential amino acids (EAAs) and 38.4% of non-EAAs in patients treated with FOLFOX or XELOX. These changes in EAAs occurred in two opposite directions: EAAs decreased with FOLFOX and increased or did not decrease with XELOX (interactions: from p = 0.034 to p = 0.003). Baseline plasma MDA levels in both FOLFOX and XELOX patients were above the normal range of values, and increased, albeit not significantly, during therapy. In conclusion, three-month FOLFOX or XELOX therapy affected plasma EAAs differently but not the baseline MDA levels, which were already high.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition support professionals are tasked with estimating energy requirements for critically ill patients. Estimating energy leads to suboptimal feeding practices and adverse outcomes. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the gold standard for determining energy expenditure. However, access is limited, so clinicians must rely on predictive equations. METHODS A retrospective chart review of critically ill patients who underwent IC in 2019 was conducted. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (MSJ), Penn State University equation (PSU), and weight-based nomograms were calculated using admission weights. Demographic, anthropometric, and IC data were extracted from the medical record. Data were stratified by body mass index (BMI) classifications, and relationships between estimated energy requirements and IC were compared. RESULTS Participants (N = 326) were included. Median age was 59.2 years, and BMI was 30.1. The MSJ and PSU were positively correlated with IC in all BMI classes (all P < 0.001). Median measured energy expenditure was 2004 kcal/day, which was 1.1-fold greater than PSU, 1.2-fold greater than MSJ, and 1.3-fold greater than weight-based nomograms (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Despite the significant relationships between measured and estimated energy requirements, the significant fold-differences suggest that using predictive equations leads to significant underfeeding, which may result in poor clinical outcomes. Clinicians should rely on IC when available, and increased training in the interpretation of IC is warranted. In the absence of IC, the use of admission weight in weight-based nomograms could serve as a surrogate, as these calculations provided the closest estimate to IC in participants with normal weight and overweight, but not obesity.

Abstract
Anthropologic activities caused frequent eutrophication in coastal and estuarine waters, resulting in diel-cycling hypoxia. Given global climate change, extreme weather events often occur, thus salinity fluctuation frequently breaks out in these waters. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of salinity and hypoxia on intestinal microbiota and digestive enzymes of Crassostrea hongkongensis. Specifically, we sequenced 16 S rRNA of intestinal microbiota and measured the digestive enzymes trypsin (TRS), lipase (LPS) and amylase (AMY) in oysters exposed for 28 days to three salinities (10, 25 and 35) and two dissolved oxygen conditions, normoxia (6 mg/L) and hypoxia (6 mg/L for 12 h, 2 mg/L for 12 h). Oysters in normoxia and salinity of 25 were treated as control. After 28-day exposure, for microbial components, Fusobacteriota, Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota comprised the majority for all experimental groups. Compared with the control group, the diversity and structure of intestinal microbiota tended to change in all treated groups. The species richness in C. hongkongensis intestine also changed. It was the most significant that high salinity increased Proteobacteria proportion while low salinity and hypoxia increased Fusobacteriota but decreased Proteobacteria, respectively. Additionally, Actinobacteriota was sensitive and changed under environmental stressor (P < 0.01). The prediction results on intestinal microbiota showed that, all functions of oysters were up-regulated to distinct degrees under low/high salinity with hypoxia. According to the KEGG prediction, cellular processes were more active and energy metabolism upregulated, indicating the adaptation of C. hongkongensis to environmental change. Periodical hypoxia and low/high salinity had complex effect on the digestive enzymes, in which the activity of TRS and LPS decreased while AMY increased. High/low salinity and periodical hypoxia can change the secretion of digestive enzymes and influence intestinal microbial diversity and species richness of C. hongkongensis, deducing the chronic adverse effects on the digestive physiology in long-term exposure.

Abstract
The importance of the interplay between inflammation and nutrition has generated much interest in recent times. Inflammation has been identified as a key driver for disease-related malnutrition, leading to anorexia, reduced food intake, muscle catabolism, and insulin resistance, which are stimulating a catabolic state. Interesting recent data suggest that inflammation also modulates the response to nutritional treatment. Studies have demonstrated that patients with high inflammation show no response to nutritional interventions, while patients with lower levels of inflammation do. This may explain the contradictory results of nutritional trials to date. Several studies of heterogeneous patient populations, or in the critically ill or advanced cancer patients, have not found significant benefits on clinical outcome. Vice versa, several dietary patterns and nutrients with pro- or anti-inflammatory properties have been identified, demonstrating that nutrition influences inflammation. Within this review, we summarize and discuss recent advances in both the role of inflammation in malnutrition and the effect of nutrition on inflammation.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the level of selected biochemical parameters in venous blood and their potential effects on the development of pressure ulcers in patients treated in intensive care settings. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients hospitalised in an intensive care unit (ICU) were enrolled for the study. The methods used included controlled observation, literature review and medical record analysis. The observation protocol applied in the study consisted of two parts comprising the basic information, sociodemographic data, results of laboratory tests (CRP, PCT, albumin, protein and haemoglobin concentrations) as well as the Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Ulcer Risk. Results: The subjects presented moderate to high risk of pressure ulcers, reflected by the mean score of 8.18 ± 1.3 points, with minimum and maximum scores of 6 and 12 points, respectively. Normal albumin level was identified in only five subjects (10.0%) while 45 subjects (90.0%) were found with results below the norm. A statistical relationship was observed between such variables as albumin concentration (p < 0.01) and total protein level (p = 0.007). The findings show a strong correlation between the score in the Braden Scale and the level of albumins (R = 0.55). Conclusions: In our study, lower concentrations of albumins and total proteins correspond to a greater risk of pressure ulcers.

Abstract
The purposes of this retrospective study were to document the prevalence of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker of inflammation, and its potential predictive value for Rehabilitation outcomes in post-acute elderly inpatients. The medical records of 304 elderly subjects admitted to our Rehabilitation Institute for any disease following an acute event were examined. High levels of CRP (> 0.5 mg/dl) were present in 100% of the subjects, and the value > 1.5 mg/dl (n = 86) predicted unfavourable outcomes (n = 28; 32.5% of the patients: death or transfer to other institutions). Among the patients with favourable outcomes (discharge home n = 255), 62.7% still exhibited severe disabilities. Pressure ulcers and low functional status also predicted unfavourable outcomes. The study highlights the need for future investigations into the possible reduction of CRP levels, after an intensive nutritional approach and combined physical interventions.

Abstract
Pressure ulcers can diminish global life quality, contribute to rapid mortality in some patients and pose a significant cost to health-care organizations. Accordingly, their prevention and management are highly important. Nutritional deprivation and insufficient dietary intake are the key risk factors for the development of pressure ulcers and impaired wound healing. Unplanned weight loss is a major risk factor for malnutrition and pressure ulcer development. Suboptimal nutrition interferes with the function of the immune system, collagen synthesis, and tensile strength. No laboratory test can exactly define an individual's nutritional status. Although serum albumin, prealbumin, transferrin, and retinol-binding protein as well as anthropometric measures such as height, weight, and body mass index and the other laboratory values may be suitable to establish the overall prognosis, still they might not well represent the nutritional status. Although the ideal nutrient intake to encourage wound healing is unknown, increased needs for energy, protein, zinc, and Vitamins A, C, and E and also amino acids such as arginine and glutamine have been documented. Hydration plays a vital role in the preservation and repair of skin integrity. Dehydration disturbs cell metabolism and wound healing. Adequate fluid intake is necessary to support the blood flow to wounded tissues and to prevent additional breakdown of the skin. The main aim of the present article is to review the current evidence related to hydration and nutrition for bedsore prevention and management in adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE At present, the enteral nutrition approaches via nose and duodenum (or nose and jejunum) are the preferred method of nutritional support in the medical engineering field, given the superiority of in line with physiological processes and no serious complication. In this study, the authors adopted saline as the acoustic window, and gave enteral nutrition support to critically ill patients, via the nasogastrojejunal approach guided by semi-automated ultrasound. These above patients benefited a lot from this kind of nutrition support treatment, and we aimed to report the detailed information. METHODS Critically ill patients (n = 41) who had been treated with hospitalized intestine nutrition were identified. The Apogee 1200 ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus, and nasogastrojejunal tubes were adopted to carry out intestine nutrition treatment guided by semi-automated ultrasound. In order to confirm the specific positions of cardia, gastric body, antrum of stomach, and pylorus, the semi-automated ultrasound was utilized to probe the stomach cavity. And then, the ultrasonic probe was placed in the cardia location, and the nasogastrojejunal tube was slowly inserted through the metal thread. After operation, the nursing service satisfaction of patients and mean operation time were calculated, respectively. RESULTS All the patients were treated with enteral nutrition via nasogastrojejunal tube, and the whole procedure was under the guidance of semi-automated ultrasonography. The end of the feeding tube is attached to the surface of the stomach with a greater curvature, which can be bent on account of a no gastric peristalsis squeeze function, and thereby were prevented from entering into the antrum and pylorus locations. After this procedure, the mental thread was taken out, and the tube was pushed forward by a "drift" approach in order to allow it to enter into the intestine. The total nursing service satisfaction of patients was 90.24%, and the total incidence of adverse reactions was 17.07%. CONCLUSIONS In summary, the application of saline can be taken as sound window, and the metal wire as the tracking target, the bedside nasogastrojejunal tube guided by semi-automated ultrasound is an effective feeding tube placement method, with relatively good clinical application value in medical engineering.
