Abstract
BACKGROUND Children living in food insecure households have poorer mental health outcomes compared with their food-secure peers; however, the relationship between the severity of food insecurity and diagnosed mental health conditions in young children remains unknown. This study examined the association between household food insecurity and reported diagnosed mental health conditions among children aged 5-11 years in Canada. METHODS This study included 16 216 children aged 5-11 years living in Canada, from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth. We measured household food insecurity using the Household Food Security Survey Module. We measured diagnosed mental health conditions by parent/caregiver report of health professional-diagnosed anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder. We developed a multivariable logistic regression model to assess the association between severities of food insecurity and mental health, controlling for potentially confounding variables. RESULTS 17.0% of children lived in households reporting some level of food insecurity (5.4% marginal, 8.0% moderate and 3.6% severe). The prevalence of at least one diagnosed mental health condition in the same population was 10.9%. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, children from marginal, moderate and severe food insecure households had a 1.39 (95% CI 0.99 to 1.97), 1.46 (95% CI 1.13 to 1.89) and 1.67 (95% CI 1.18 to 2.35) increased odds of having a diagnosed mental health condition, respectively. CONCLUSION Household food insecurity is associated with an increased presence of diagnosed mental health conditions in children aged 5-11 years. This study adds to the body of research showing that social and economic inequities, including household food insecurity, negatively impact the health of children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This paper examines the distribution, parameters, and determinants of safety net program use among a nationally representative sample of low-income children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS We used data from the 2021 National Survey of Children's Health to produce population estimates of material hardship and safety net program use among 554 low-income households of children with ASD, ages 3 to 17 years, relative to 2831 children with other special health care needs (SHCN) and 8758 children with no SHCN of the same age. Design-adjusted multivariate logistic regression models identified predictors of cash assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and disconnection from both. RESULTS There were few significant differences in material hardship between children with ASD and those with other SHCN, although children with ASD experienced significantly higher levels of hardships compared to children with no SHCN. Having a child with ASD did not significantly increase the odds of safety net use. Health insurance and household income were stronger predictors of use than disability. Nine percent of disconnected children lived in households under 100% federal poverty level and experienced some type of material hardship. CONCLUSIONS Future research about the economic security of children with ASD and their families could focus on the following 3 areas of inquiry: assess how race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic position interact with disability to influence safety net program use; examine the intersection between Medicaid and safety net programs at the state and national levels; and identify specific subgroups of children at risk for disconnection and understand why they are not accessing benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased risk of food insecurity has been reported among both college students and persons with disabilities; however, food insecurity among college students with disabilities has not been explored. OBJECTIVE This article aims to characterize the prevalence of food insecurity among college students with and without disabilities at a northeastern university. METHODS Cross-sectional data were collected between 2018 and 2020at a public northeastern university as part of the ongoing College Health and Nutrition Assessment Survey. An online survey collected self-reported data, including food security and disability status. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses examined the differences in food insecurity among college students with and without disabilities. RESULTS The sample (n = 880) was 61.6% female, predominately white (94.5%), and had a mean age of 19 ± 1.2 years. One out of eight participants (13.3%) reported a disability. Low or very low food security (13.3% and 5.5% respectively) was reported in one out of five participants, while 81.4% reported high or marginal food security (67.6% and 13.8%, respectively). Participants with a disability were more than twice as likely to report food insecurity than those without a disability (35.9% vs. 16.0%, p < 0.001). Among participants with a disability, 12.8% reported very low food security and 23.1% reported low food security, compared to 4.3% and 11.7%, respectively, among those students without disabilities (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS College students with disabilities experienced disproportionally higher rates of food insecurity than students without disabilities. Further research in diverse institutions can help to better understand and develop targeted supports for this vulnerable segment of the college population.

Abstract
Mental health challenges impede the well-being of autistic people. This Review outlines contributing neurodevelopmental and physical health conditions, rates and developmental trajectories of mental health challenges experienced by autistic people, as well as unique clinical presentations. A framework is proposed to consider four contributing themes to aid personalized formulation: social-contextual determinants, adverse life experiences, autistic cognitive features, and shared genetic and early environmental predispositions. Current evidence-based and clinical-knowledge-informed intervention guidance and ongoing development of support are highlighted for specific mental health areas. Tailored mental health support for autistic people should be neurodivergence-informed, which is fundamentally humanistic and compatible with the prevailing bio-psycho-social frameworks. The personalized formulation should be holistic, considering physical health and transdiagnostic neurodevelopmental factors, intellectual and communication abilities, and contextual-experiential determinants and their interplay with autistic cognition and biology, alongside resilience. Supporting family well-being is integral. Mutual empathic understanding is fundamental to creating societies in which people across neurotypes are all empowered to thrive.

Abstract
Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at greater obesity risk compared to typically developing peers. Although many potential risk factors for this relationship have been identified, the causal chain must be better understood, particularly modifiable social determinants of obesity risk in ASD, and especially for children with ASD from minoritized racial/ethnic groups. We aimed to: (1) examine racial/ethnic disparities in obesity status in boys with ASD; (2) assess associations between social determinants of health and obesity status; and (3) understand if social determinants of health factors mediate the relationship between race/ethnicity and obesity status for these youth. We used data for 124 boys, aged 9-10 with ASD enrolled in an ongoing longitudinal study. Social determinants of health explored included socioeconomic position, Area Deprivation Index, neighborhood safety, food and housing insecurity, and racial/ethnic discrimination. The racial/ethnic distribution was: 17.1% Black, 14.6% Latino, and 68.3% White; average age was 10 years. Both Black (PR 2.57, 95% CI: 1.26-5.26) and Latino boys (PR 2.08, 95% CI: 1.08-4.03) with ASD were more likely to be obese than their White peers. While there were significant differences in some social determinants of health by race/ethnicity, only food insecurity mediated associations between race/ethnicity (Black vs. White) and obesity. The striking disparities in obesity and differences in social determinants of health between Black and Latino children with ASD compared to White children emphasize the need to identify factors that contribute to healthy weight among these children and to address these factors in practice.

Abstract
Autistic adults possess many skills sought by employers, but may be at a disadvantage in the workplace if social-communication differences negatively impact teamwork. We present a novel collaborative virtual reality (VR)-based activities simulator, called ViRCAS, that allows autistic and neurotypical adults to work together in a shared virtual space, offering the chance to practice teamwork and assess progress. ViRCAS has three main contributions: 1) a new collaborative teamwork skills practice platform; 2) a stakeholder-driven collaborative task set with embedded collaboration strategies; and 3) a framework for multimodal data analysis to assess skills. Our feasibility study with 12 participant pairs showed preliminary acceptance of ViRCAS, a positive impact of the collaborative tasks on supported teamwork skills practice for autistic and neurotypical individuals, and promising potential to quantitatively assess collaboration through multimodal data analysis. The current work paves the way for longitudinal studies that will assess whether the collaborative teamwork skill practice that ViRCAS provides also contributes towards improved task performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Goal 2 of United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals exhorts countries to provide guidelines on better nutrition for all children. In response, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government designed a national nutrition framework to encourage better eating habits. However, large body of literature has reported that children with ASD are at high risks of malnutrition and poor eating habits. Yet, in the UAE and other contexts, there is limited research on accessibility of nutritional services to adults in the lives of children with ASD. AIMS As parents and teachers spend the most time with children with ASD, this study sought to understand their perceptions of the availability of nutritional services for such children in the UAE. METHOD AND PROCEDURES Penchansky and Thomas' (1981) health access theory served as the theoretical framework; its five tenets (geography, finance, accommodation, resources and acceptability) informed the design of a semi-structured interview guide. Data were collected from 21 participants, comprising 6 parents and 15 teachers of children with ASD. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Thematic analysis revealed that participants perceived accommodation, acceptability, and human resource availability as barriers to accessibility. However, geographical and financial accessibility were not identified as challenges. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The study calls for health policymakers to formalise nutritional services as an integrated part of the UAE health system, while also extending services to children with ASD. CONTRIBUTION This study makes a substantial contribution to the literature. First, it addresses the needs for nutritional services for children with ASD. There is a limited body of knowledge on whether children with ASD have access to the requisite nutrition for development This study sheds light on an area that has received limited scholarly insight. Second, it adds to the usage of health access theory in studies on nutritional services for children with ASD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine the extent to which financial impacts and community resources utilization are associated with pediatric feeding difficulties. We hypothesize that children with feeding difficulties will have more financial impacts and community resources utilization than children without feeding difficulties. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the 2017-2018 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) regarding 14,960 children 0-5 years. NSCH utilized random sampling of families across the United States to collect nationally representative data. Outcomes included out-of-pocket costs, caregivers leaving a job due to the child's health, food insufficiency, receival of food or cash assistance, and receival of special education and/or developmental services. We used a multivariable logistic regression controlling for sociodemographic factors to examine the associations of feeding difficulties with financial impacts and community resources utilization outcomes. RESULTS Out of 14,690 respondents, children were a mean (SD) age of 2.53(0.03) years and 1.7% reported feeding difficulties. These children had higher odds of having out-of-pocket costs of ≥$1000 (OR: 3.01; 95% CI: 1.61, 5.62), having a caregiver that left a job due to their child's health (OR: 3.16; 95% CI: 2.01, 4.98), experiencing food insufficiency (OR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.71), and receiving special education and/or developmental services (OR 3.98; 95% CI: 2.46, 6.45) than children without feeding difficulties. CONCLUSIONS Children with feeding difficulties are more likely to have financial impacts and community resources utilization than children without feeding difficulties. This information can be used to tailor interventions to improve family-centered care and outcomes for children.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented event with devastating effects on children and families, highlighting and broadening disparities in the care of children with developmental disabilities, while simultaneously catalyzing innovation. Children are vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19, resulting in increased stress, anxiety, isolation, and health challenges, further amplified in autistic children and children with other neurodevelopmental disabilities. These children are uniquely vulnerable due to communication impairments, comorbid medical disorders, reduced adaptability, and reliance on therapeutic interventions. Abrupt reduction in services and access to care during the pandemic compromised physical and mental health and led to missed intervention opportunities at critical times. It is important to examine the effects that the pandemic triggered, address deficiencies, and recognize new opportunities to improve systems of care to prepare for unforeseen futures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Before the COVID-19 pandemic, households of children on the autism spectrum were more likely to be food insecure than households of children without disabilities. With the unprecedented social, public health, and economic disruption caused by the pandemic, food insecurity has likely increased among families of children on the autism spectrum. OBJECTIVE This analysis aims to compare the prevalence of food insecurity between the Autism Speaks' Food Insecurity Survey (ASFIS) administered during the Fall of 2020 and a nationally representative sample from the Household Pulse Survey (HPS) data collected during a similar timeframe. METHODS A propensity score analysis was utilized to create stabilized inverse probability treatment weights for adjusting background differences between the two groups. A logistic regression model was computed to estimate the odds of food insecurity in the ASFIS participants compared with those in the HPS data. RESULTS After adjusting for background differences, households of children on the autism spectrum in the ASFIS were about four times more likely to be food insecure than households in the general population contained in the HPS data (OR = 3.7; 95% CI: 3.1-4.4). CONCLUSIONS The breakdown of social and economic supports during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to a significantly higher likelihood of food insecurity among families of children on the autism spectrum.

Abstract
Although previous research supports the notion that characteristics of both the child and the mother impact maternal well-being and parenting stress in mothers of children with FXS, more work is needed in which self-report measures are supplemented by physiological measures of stress and well-being. The inclusion of physiological measures, such as heart rate variability (HRV), may provide a window into the biological origins and consequences of maternal perceptions of their experiences, including the challenges of raising a child with developmental challenges. The proposed project, therefore, involved the collection of multimodal assessment data from mothers and their school-aged children with FXS. Further, given the importance of understanding how mothers of youth with FXS are faring in their everyday environment, the present study collected all data using telehealth procedures and wearable technology. Participants were 20 biological mothers and their children with FXS between the ages of 6 and 11 years. We measured maternal mental health and parenting stress through self-report as well as through HRV as a more objective measure of psychological well-being. We also examined the associations between these variables and child characteristics such as externalizing and internalizing behaviors as well as autism symptomatology. We found significant support for an elevated rate of depressive symptoms in the sample of mothers (35%) and some potential indicators for heightened rates of anxiety (15%) when compared to normed samples and rates in the general population. We also found that the mothers presented with an atypical HRV profile akin to those experiencing depression or chronic stress, although limitations of the present measure suggest the need for additional confirmatory research. Further, we found that child externalizing behaviors were the primary correlates of maternal well-being. These findings contribute to the growing body of literature regarding the unique challenges faced by these mother-child dyads and supports the importance of increasing the availability of services available to these mothers, not only for meeting the needs of their children's development and behavior, but in supporting their own well-being as well.
