Involvement of Novel Feeding-Related Peptides in Neuroendocrine Response to Stress

Stress and eating: a dual role for bombesin-like peptides

The current obesity “epidemic” in the developed world is a major health concern; over half of adult Canadians are now classified as overweight or obese. Although the reasons for high obesity rates remain unknown, an important factor appears to be the role stressors play in overconsumption of food and weight gain. In this context, increased stressor exposure and/or perceived stress may influence eating behavior and food choices. Stress-induced anorexia is often noted in rats exposed to chronic stress (e.g., repeated restraint) and access to standard Chow diet; associated reduced consumption and weight loss. However, if a similar stressor exposure takes place in the presence of palatable, calorie dense food, rats often consume an increase proportion of palatable food relative to Chow, leading to weight gain and obesity. In humans, a similar desire to eat palatable or “comfort” foods has been noted under stressful situations; it is thought that this response may potentially be attributable to stress-buffering properties and/or through activation of reward pathways. The complex interplay between stress-induced anorexia and stress-induced obesity is discussed in terms of the overlapping circuitry and neurochemicals that mediate feeding, stress and reward pathways. In particular, this paper draws attention to the bombesin family of peptides (BBs) initially shown to regulate food intake and subsequently shown to mediate stress response as well. Evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that BBs may be involved in stress-induced anorexia under certain conditions, but that the same peptides could also be involved in stress-induced obesity. This hypothesis is based on the unique distribution of BBs in key cortico-limbic brain regions involved in food regulation, reward, incentive salience and motivationally driven behavior.

Cortisol response and desire to binge following psychological stress: comparison between obese subjects with and without binge eating disorder

While stress and negative affect are known to precede "emotional eating", this relationship is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between induced psychological stress, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, and eating behavior in binge eating disorder (BED). The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was applied in obese participants with (n=8) and without BED (n=8), and normal weight controls (n=8). Psychological characteristics, eating-related symptoms, and cortisol secretion were assessed. Baseline stress, anxiety and cortisol measures were similar in all groups. At baseline desire to binge was significantly higher among the BED group. While the TSST induced an increase in cortisol levels, a blunted cortisol response was observed in the BED group. In the BED group, a positive correlation was found between cortisol (area under the curve) levels during the TSST and the change in VAS scores for desire to binge. Post-TSST desire to binge and sweet craving were significantly higher in the BED group and correlated positively with stress, anxiety, and cortisol response in the BED group only. These results suggest chronic down-regulation of the HPA axis in participants with BED, and a relationship between psychological stress, the acute activation of the HPA axis, and food craving.

Decreased plasma nesfatin-1 levels in patients with generalized anxiety disorder

Nesfatin-1, a recently discovered satiety molecule, is localized in neurons of the hypothalamus and brain stem and colocalized with stress-related substances. However, the relation between nesfatin-1 and stressor related behaviors like anxiety and/or fear has not yet been investigated in human subjects. In the present study, our aim was to investigate whether there was a relationship between plasma nesfatin-1 levels and generalized anxiety disorder. The study group consisted of 40 patients (BMI, 22.98 ± 0.56) with generalized anxiety disorder and 34 age-matched healthy male control subjects (23.05 ± 0.4). Patients fully met the fourth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, text revision. Blood samples for nesfatin-1 were drawn at the end of an overnight fasting period at least 10h. Plasma nesfatin-1 levels were measured and found significantly lower in anxiety disorder group than in control group (0.35 ± 0.037 ng/ml vs. 0.63 ± 0.080 ng/ml, respectively, p<0.05). Low nesfatin-1 levels may be related with generalized anxiety disorder.

High plasma nesfatin-1 level in patients with major depressive disorder

AIM

In the present study, our aim was to determine the changes in the plasma concentrations of a recently discovered peptide hormone nesfatin-1 in patients with major depressive disorder and then to make a comparison with the control group.

METHOD

Subjects in the patient group were randomly selected from Mustafa Kemal University, Medical School, Research and Training Hospital, Psychiatry Department, Outpatient Clinic and subjects in the control group were selected from healthy volunteers. Healthy control subjects were matched in terms of weight and body mass index. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) was applied to both groups. ELISA method was used for measurement of plasma nesfatin-1 levels.

RESULTS

The average nesfatin-1 level was statistically higher in patients with major depressive disorder than in the control group (p<0.001). A positive correlation was observed between plasma nesfatin-1 levels and HAM-D scores both in the patient group (r=0.59, p<0.001) and in the control group (r=0.58, p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest a possible relationship between major depressive disorder and high plasma nesfatin-1 level.

Acute and repeated restraint differentially activate orexigenic pathways in the rat hypothalamus

Stress and obesity are highly prevalent conditions, and the mechanisms through which stress affects food intake are complex. In the present study, stress-induced activation in neuropeptide systems controlling ingestive behavior was determined. Adult male rats were exposed to acute (30 min/d × 1 d) or repeated (30 min/d × 14 d) restraint stress, followed by transcardial perfusion 2 h after the termination of the stress exposure. Brain tissues were harvested, and 30 μm sections through the hypothalamus were immunohistochemically stained for Fos protein, which was then co-localized within neurons staining positively for the type 4 melanocortin receptor (MC4R), the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R), or agouti-related peptide (AgRP). Cell counts were performed in the paraventricular (PVH), arcuate (ARC) and ventromedial (VMH) hypothalamic nuclei and in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). Fos was significantly increased in all regions except the VMH in acutely stressed rats, and habituated with repeated stress exposure, consistent with previous studies. In the ARC, repeated stress reduced MC4R cell activation while acute restraint decreased activation in GLP1R neurons. Both patterns of stress exposure reduced the number of AgRP-expressing cells that also expressed Fos in the ARC. Acute stress decreased Fos-GLP1R expression in the LHA, while repeated restraint increased the number of Fos-AgRP neurons in this region. The overall profile of orexigenic signaling in the brain is thus enhanced by acute and repeated restraint stress, with repeated stress leading to further increases in signaling, in a region-specific manner. Stress-induced modifications to feeding behavior appear to depend on both the duration of stress exposure and regional activation in the brain. These results suggest that food intake may be increased as a consequence of stress, and may play a role in obesity and other stress-associated metabolic disorders.

Metabolic and stress-related roles of prolactin-releasing peptide

In the modern world, improvements in human health can be offset by unhealthy lifestyle factors, including the deleterious consequences of stress and obesity. For energy homeostasis, humoral factors and neural afferents from the gastrointestinal tract, in combination with long-term nutritional signals, communicate information to the brain to regulate energy intake and expenditure. Energy homeostasis and stress interact with each other, and stress affects both food intake and energy expenditure. Prolactin-releasing peptide, synthesized in discrete neuronal populations in the hypothalamus and brainstem, plays an important role in integrating these responses. This review describes how prolactin-releasing peptide neurons receive information concerning both internal metabolic states and environmental conditions, and play a key role in energy homeostasis and stress responses.

Administration of human leptin differentially affects parameters of cortisol secretion in socially housed female rhesus monkeys

Chronic exposure to psychosocial stress may lead to a dysregulation of the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis that results in a number of adverse health outcomes. The fat-derived hormone leptin has been indicated as a potential key component to maintaining homeostasis by enhancing glucocorticoid negative feedback. Using an established model of nonhuman primate social stress, notably social subordination, this study examined the effects of continuous leptin administration on cortisol secretion in female rhesus monkeys. The 20 subjects were maintained in stable five-member social groups with established dominance hierarchies. All females were ovariectomized but received estradiol throughout the study to maintain serum concentrations at early follicular phase levels. Three parameters of cortisol secretion were examined in dominant and subordinate females during control and leptin-treatment conditions: diurnal cortisol secretion; response to a dexamethasone suppression test; and response to a brief separation from their social group. We hypothesized that leptin supplementation would attenuate the hypercortisolemia characteristic of subordinate females. During baseline conditions, subordinate female rhesus monkeys had significantly lower levels of serum leptin compared with more dominant monkeys and were less sensitive to glucocorticoid negative feedback. Exogenous administration of leptin improved glucocorticoid negative feedback in subordinate females and decreased morning cortisol in all animals. However, there were no status differences in response to a social separation test and diurnal rhythm in cortisol during baseline conditions. However, leptin administration did not attenuate the increase in cortisol in response to a social separation. The data presented in this study demonstrate that leptin can attenuate several parameters of cortisol secretion in female rhesus monkeys and thus may play a role in the response of the adrenal glands to socio-environmental stimuli.

Nesfatin-1 increases anxiety- and fear-related behaviors in the rat

RATIONALE

Nesfatin-1, derived from the protein NEFA/nucleobindin2 (NUCB2), is a newly identified peptide that acts as a potent satiety agent. It has been reported that peptides involved in the regulation of ingestive behavior are also involved in the regulation of the stress response. However, the relation between nesfatin-1 and stressor-related behaviors like anxiety and/or fear has not yet been investigated.

OBJECTIVE

The effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of nesfatin-1 (0, 5, and 25 pmol/3 microl) were assessed in several paradigms that are thought to reflect anxiety and/or fear in rats.

RESULTS

Consistent with an anxiogenic effect, nesfatin-1 dose-dependently decreased the percentage of time spent on the open arms of the elevated plus maze, increased latency to approach, and decreased consumption of a palatable snack in an anxiogenic (unfamiliar) environment. Moreover, ICV nesfatin-1 increased the fear-potentiated startle response and the time spent freezing to both context and conditioned cues in a conditioned emotional response test.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that in addition to its role as a satiety peptide, nesfatin-1 may also be involved in the mediation of anxiety- and/or fear-related responses.

Acotiamide hydrochloride (Z-338), a novel prokinetic agent, restores delayed gastric emptying and feeding inhibition induced by restraint stress in rats

Acotiamide hydrochloride (Z-338) is a member of new class prokinetic agents currently being developed for the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD). DNA microarray analysis showed that acotiamide altered the expressions of stress-related genes such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, GABA transporters and neuromedin U (NmU) in the medulla oblongata or hypothalamus after administration of acotiamide. Therefore, effects of acotiamide on stress-related symptoms, delayed gastric emptying and feeding inhibition, in rats were examined. Acotiamide significantly improved both delayed gastric emptying and feeding inhibition in restraint stress-induced model, but did not affect both basal gastric emptying and feeding in intact rats, indicating that acotiamide exerted effects only on gastric emptying and feeding impaired by the stress. On the other hand, mosapride showed significant acceleration of gastric emptying in intact and restraint stress-induced model, and itopride showed no effect on restraint stress-induced delayed gastric emptying. In addition, gene expression of NmU increased by restraint stress was suppressed by administration of acotiamide, while acotiamide had no effect on delayed gastric emptying induced by an intracerebroventricular administration of NmU, suggesting that the suppressive effect of acotiamide on gene expression of NmU might be important to restore delayed gastric emptying or feeding inhibition induced by restraint stress. These findings suggest that acotiamide might play an important role in regulation of stress response. As stress is considered to be a major contributing factor in the development of FD, the observed effects may be relevant for symptom improvement in FD.

Chronic repeated restraint stress increases prolactin-releasing peptide/tyrosine-hydroxylase ratio with gender-related differences in the rat brain

In this study, we investigated the effect of chronic repeated restraint (RR) on prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP) expression. In the brainstem, where PrRP colocalize with norepinephrine in neurons of the A1 and A2 catecholaminergic cell groups, the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) has also been examined. In the brainstem, but not in the hypothalamus, the basal PrRP expression in female rats was higher than that in the males that was abolished by ovariectomy. RR evoked an elevation of PrRP expression in all areas investigated, with smaller reaction in the brainstems of females. There was no gender-related difference in the RR-evoked TH expression. Elevation of PrRP was relatively higher than elevation of TH, causing a shift in PrRP/TH ratio in the brainstem after RR. Estrogen alpha receptors were found in the PrRP neurons of the A1 and A2 cell groups, but not in the hypothalamus. Bilateral lesions of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus did not prevent RR-evoked changes. Elevated PrRP production parallel with increased PrRP/TH ratio in A1/A2 neurons indicate that: (i) there is a clear difference in the regulation of TH and PrRP expression after RR, and (ii) among other factors this may also contribute to the changed sensitivity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis during chronic stress.

Brain leptin and nerve growth factor are differently affected by stress in male and female mice: possible neuroendocrine and cardio-metabolic implications

The aim of the present study was to investigate the variations in leptin and nerve growth factor (NGF) expression induced by immobilization stress in the brain of male and female adult CD1 mice. We found that 10 days of repeated immobilization stress induced an increase of hypothalamus and thalamus NGF that was more pronounced in female than in male mice. We also found that this type of stress induced an increase of leptin expression in the hypothalamus of female mice, and a decrease in the thalamus of both male and female mice, associated with enhanced expression of leptin receptors in the hypothalamus and thalamus, both in male and female mice. The observation that the brain leptin and NGF receptors were altered by stress suggests a functional role for these molecules in neuroendocrine and cardiovascular response to stress events.

The acute ghrelin response to a psychological stress challenge does not predict the post-stress urge to eat

Ghrelin is a growth hormone and cortisol secretagogue that plays an important role in appetite and weight regulation. It is not known whether ghrelin is involved in the eating response to stress in humans. In the present study we examined the effects of psychologically induced stress on plasma ghrelin levels in patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) (n=8) and in healthy subjects of normal (n=8) or increased (n=8) body mass index (BMI). Volunteers were subjected to the standardized trier social stress test (TSST). Heart rate, blood pressure, serum cortisol, serum prolactin, and plasma ghrelin levels were measured throughout the test. In addition, subjects were requested to rate their feelings of anxiety, tension, urge to eat uncontrollably and desire to eat sweets by means of a visual analog scale both before and after the TSST. There was a significant rise in the systolic blood pressure (p=0.003) in the study population, reflecting induction of physiological changes by the psychological challenge. Basal ghrelin levels were higher in healthy normal weight (385.4+/-79 pg/ml) than in obese (170.4+/-15.7 pg/ml) subjects (p<0.033). Basal ghrelin levels in patients with BED (240+/-40.8 pg/ml) were at an intermediate level between thin and healthy obese subjects, but this difference did not attain statistical significance. There were no differences in ghrelin levels throughout the test among the groups after correction for BMI, age and gender. A significant difference in the trend time of ghrelin was revealed when the three groups were analyzed according to their cortisol response to stress. Ghrelin levels increased in cortisol responders whereas no change or a decrease in ghrelin levels occurred in cortisol non-responders (p=0.038). Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between the change in ghrelin and the change in cortisol during TSST (r=0.444, p=0.029) but not between the change in ghrelin and the change in systolic blood pressure. The combined score of stress and anxiety was higher in subjects in the higher quartile of ghrelin response in comparison to the lower quartile both before (28.3+/-6.5 vs. 6.6+/-3.3, p=0.0077) and after (61.6+/-9 vs. 28.3+/-11.3, p=0.033) TSST. On the other hand, eating related scores did not differ according to quartiles of ghrelin response. Our findings indicate that a psychological stress may induce an increase in plasma ghrelin levels in humans, and that the post-stress induced urge for uncontrolled eating is not acutely modulated by stress related elevations in ghrelin levels. Furthermore, the stress induced increase in plasma ghrelin was associated with the acute response of serum cortisol to stress, but was independent of BMI or the presence of BED.

Ghrelin administration into tegmental areas stimulates locomotor activity and increases extracellular concentration of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens

Ghrelin stimulates appetite, increases food intake and causes adiposity by mechanisms that include direct actions on the brain. Previously, we showed that intracerebroventricular administration of ghrelin has stimulatory and dopamine-enhancing properties. These effects of ghrelin are mediated via central nicotine receptors, suggesting that ghrelin can activate the acetylcholine-dopamine reward link. This reward link consists of cholinergic input from the laterodorsal tegmental area (LDTg) to the mesolimbic dopamine system that originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects to the nucleus accumbens. Given that growth hormone secretagogue receptors (GHSR-1A) are expressed in the VTA and LDTg, brain areas involved in reward, the present series of experiments were undertaken to examine the hypothesis that these regions may mediate the stimulatory and dopamine-enhancing effects of ghrelin, by means of locomotor activity and in vivo microdialysis in freely moving mice. We found that local administration of ghrelin into the VTA (1 microg in 1 microl) induced an increase in locomotor activity and in the extracellular concentration of accumbal dopamine. In addition, local administration of ghrelin into the LDTg (1 microg in 1 microl) caused a locomotor stimulation and an increase in the extracellular levels of accumbal dopamine. Taken together, this indicates that ghrelin might, via activation of GHSR-1A in the VTA and LDTg, stimulate the acetylcholine-dopamine reward link, implicating that ghrelin is a part of the neurochemical overlap between the reward systems and those that regulate energy balance.

Metabolic signals modulate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation during maternal separation of the neonatal mouse

The postnatal development of the mouse is characterised by a period of hypo-responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to moderate stressors. Maternal separation disinhibits this blockade of the HPA axis, but the mechanism responsible is not clear. The present study examined the influence of metabolic signals on the central and peripheral components of the HPA axis in neonatal mice aged 8 days in absence or presence of the mother. Reductions in plasma glucose and leptin as well as rapid increases in plasma ghrelin were apparent in the neonate 4 h following maternal deprivation and maximal at 8 h. In addition, maternal separation induced an increase of neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA expression in the arcuate nucleus, a decrease of corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA expression in the paraventricular nucleus and a rise in serum corticosterone. Pharmacological manipulation of the metabolic signals attenuated the HPA response to maternal separation. Thus, the rise in plasma corticosterone induced by maternal separation was ameliorated by prevention of reduction in blood glucose or blockade of the ghrelin signalling pathway, as were the hypothalamic changes in NPY and CRH mRNAs. By contrast, leptin treatment did not affect the HPA axis response to maternal separation. Together these results suggest that metabolic signals play an important role in triggering the HPA response of the neonate to maternal separation.

Ghrelin and leptin elevation in postoperative intra-abdominal sepsis

BACKGROUND

Both ghrelin and leptin are important signals in the regulation of food intake and energy balance. Leptin concentrations are elevated in the majority of obese individuals, and its levels usually correlate with adiposity and body mass index. Ghrelin as a new growth hormone (GH)-releasing peptide was discovered in 1999. Ghrelin stimulates food intake and exhibits gastroprotective properties. Many other regulatory effects of both ghrelin and leptin involving cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, and endocrine systems were revealed. New experimental studies show both hormones as new acute phase reactants in animal models of inflammatory reaction. The aim of this study was to characterize the levels of circulating ghrelin and leptin in relation to systemic inflammatory response. We used a postoperative bacterial sepsis after large abdominal surgery as a model of cytokine network hyperstimulation.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The prospective study was performed on 25 surgical patients with proven postoperative intra-abdominal sepsis after large abdominal surgery. Plasma levels of ghrelin (RIA), leptin, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, sIL-2R, IL-6 (ELISA analysis), CRP and alpha1-antitrypsin (nephelometric analysis) were analyzed.

RESULTS

Authors demonstrate statistically significant elevation of plasma ghrelin (492.3+/-70.6 ng/l) and leptin (31.6+/-12.2 microg/l) compared with the control group (336.5+/-46,1, p<0.01 for ghrelin, 3.5+/-1.2 microg/l, p<0.001 for leptin). The regression coefficient was the highest for ghrelin and IL-6 (r=0,44, p<0.05), and for ghrelin and TNF (r=0.43, p<0.05) in the sepsis group. In regard to leptin, the regression coefficient was the highest for IL-6 and leptin (r=0.53, p<0.05) and for leptin and CRP (r=0.51, p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between ghrelin and IL-1beta, ghrelin and sIL-2R, and leptin and IL-1beta.

CONCLUSIONS

During postoperative intra-abdominal sepsis, both ghrelin and leptin plasma levels are elevated and positively correlate with both inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6) and main APP member (CRP). It supports experimental finding that TNF-alpha and IL-6 can be important regulatory factors of their synthesis. This hormonal reaction is not specific to sepsis--the significant increase of both ghrelin and leptin occurs during an uncomplicated postoperative response, although in a lesser extent than was shown in sepsis.

The corticotropin-releasing factor system as a mediator of the appetite-suppressing effects of stress in fish

A characteristic feature of the behavioural response to intensely acute or chronic stressors is a reduction in appetite. In fish, as in other vertebrates, the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system plays a key role in coordinating the neuroendocrine, autonomic, and behavioural responses to stress. The following review documents the evidence implicating the CRF system as a mediator of the appetite-suppressing effects of stress in fish. Central injections of CRF or the related peptide, urotensin I (UI), or pharmacological treatments or stressors that result in an increase in forebrain CRF and UI gene expression, can elicit dose-dependent reductions in food intake that are at least partially reversed by pre-treatment with a CRF receptor antagonist. In addition, the appetite suppressing effects of various environmental, pathological, physical, and social stressors are associated with elevated levels of forebrain CRF and UI gene expression and with an activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) stress axis. In contrast, although stressors can also be associated with an increase in caudal neurosecretory system CRF and UI gene expression and an endocrine role for CRF-related peptides has been suggested, the physiological effects of peripheral CRF-related peptides on the gastrointestinal system and in the regulation of appetite have not been investigated. Overall, while CRF and UI appear to participate in the stress-induced changes in feeding behaviour in fish, the role of other know components of the CRF system is not known. Moreover, the extent to which the anorexigenic effects of CRF-related peptides are mediated through the hypothalamic feeding center, the HPI axis and cortisol, or via actions on descending autonomic pathways remains to be investigated.

Ghrelin-induced stimulation of colonic propulsion is dependent on hypothalamic neuropeptide Y1- and corticotrophin-releasing factor 1 receptor activation

Peptides participating in the hypothalamic control of feeding behaviour are also involved in the central autonomic control of gastrointestinal functions, such as secretion and motility. An anatomical interaction and functional relationship in the central nervous system between the feeding-related peptides neuropeptide Y and ghrelin is well documented. Furthermore, it has been shown that feeding-related peptides can influence digestive function via central corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) pathways. In the present study, we investigated the role of ghrelin in the central autonomic control of colonic motility. Furthermore, we addressed the hypothesis that ghrelin is involved in the hypothalamic control of colonic motor function, utilizing central neuropeptide Y receptors and hypothalamic CRF pathways. Ghrelin (0.03, 0.06 and 0.12 nmol) bilaterally microinjected into the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) induced a significant stimulation of colonic propulsion. In particular, the colonic transit time decreased from 312+/-7 min to 198+/-12 min. Microinjection of the neuropeptide Y1 receptor antagonist, BIBP-3226 (200 pmol), or the nonselective CRF receptor antagonist, astressin (30 pmol), into the PVN abolished the stimulatory effect of ghrelin injected into the PVN on colonic transit time, whereas pretreatment with the selective CRF2 receptor, antisauvagine-30 (28 pmol), failed to affect the effect of PVN-ghrelin injection on colonic propulsion. These results suggest that ghrelin can act as central modulator of gastrointestinal motor functions at the level of the PVN via neuropeptide Y1- and CRF1 receptor-dependent mechanisms.

Regulation of feeding by galnon

Galanin is a neuropeptide that has been implicated in multiple bioactivities, inter alia eating disorders. In this study, we have examined the effects of galnon, a novel low molecular weight galanin receptor ligand. Previous studies have shown that galnon acts as a systemically active, blood-brain barrier crossing agonist on galanin signaling both in vitro and in vivo, inhibiting pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures. Here, intracerebroventricular (10-20 microg) and intraperitoneal (1.5-5 mg/kg) administration of galnon induced a strong, dose-dependent reduction of food intake in rats and mice. This reduction in feeding occurred without reducing general activity and was shown to be attenuated by an intracerebroventricular administration of M35, a peptide galanin antagonist. These data demonstrate that galnon is a promising tool for studies of the involvement of galanin in feeding disorders and other behavioral processes.
