Abstract
Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Deficiency or lack of thyroid hormone causes patients to have a slower metabolism, which may lead to secondary medical issues such as weight gain, fatigue, depression, and increased cardiovascular risk. This systematic review aims to explore the effect of levothyroxine therapy on the lipid profile of hypothyroid patients. Through a comprehensive search, 3096 articles were retrieved using keywords such as Hypothyroidism, Levothyroxine, Lipid, Dyslipidemia, and Cholesterol from PubMed, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases. The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) strategy was also leveraged to extensively search the PubMed database. Research articles that were published from the year 2020 until May 2024, including randomized control trials, observational studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, literature reviews, and case reports, were included in the research. Research papers published before 2020, written in languages other than English, and animal studies were excluded. The 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria were used in the design of the systematic review. Levothyroxine therapy is the treatment of choice in patients suffering from hypothyroidism, and based on our review, the treatment has a positive impact, leading to a significant decrease in total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, and triglyceride values in hypothyroid patients. The research highlights the importance of starting timely levothyroxine therapy in hypothyroid patients to maintain normal lipid levels and reduce the associated cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
As one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory skin diseases, atopic dermatitis (AD) increasingly affects the aging population. Amid the ongoing global aging trend, it's essential to recognize the intricate relationship between AD and aging. This paper reviews existing knowledge, summarizing clinical observations of associations between AD and aging-related diseases in various systems, including endocrine, cardiovascular, and neurological. Additionally, it discusses major theories explaining the correlation, encompassing skin-mucosal barriers, systemic inflammation and stress, genes, signal transduction, and environmental and behavioral factors. The association between AD and aging holds significant importance, both in population and basic perspectives. While further research is warranted, this paper aims to inspire deeper exploration of inflammation/allergy-aging dynamics and the timely management of elderly patients with AD.

Abstract
Dry eye is a multifactorial and common age-related ocular surface disease. Dyslipidemia has been reported to be involved in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). However, it has not been clearly identified which lipid abnormality is responsible for MGD. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we discuss how lipid profile changes with aging is responsible for MGD development. METHODS An article search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Eleven studies involving dyslipidemia in patients with MGD were identified. Five out of eleven studies were further analyzed with meta-analysis. The preferred reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines were followed. Study-specific estimates (prevalence of dyslipidemia in MGD patients) were combined using one-group meta-analysis in a random-effects model. RESULTS Meta-analysis revealed that high total cholesterol (TC) and high triglycerides (TG) were significantly associated with MGD prevalence, with odds ratios of 5.245 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.582-17.389; p < 0.001) and 3.264 (95% CI: 1.047-10.181; p < 0.001), respectively, but high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were not identified. Systematic review found that the percentage of MGD patients with TC ≥ 200 mg/dL ranged from 20.0-77.6%, TG ≥ 150 mg/dL ranged from 8.3-89.7%, whereas, in the aged-match-adjusted controls, TC range of 200 mg/dL or higher and TG range of 150 mg/dL was 6.1-45.1% and 1.1-47.8%, respectively. The severity of MGD was higher with dyslipidemia. CONCLUSION Dyslipidemia and higher TC and TG are significant risk factors for MGD.

Comparisons between Bioelectrical Impedance Variables, Functional Tests and Blood Markers Based on BMI in Older Women and Their Association with Phase Angle. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to compare electrical bioimpedance variables, blood markers and functional tests based on Body Mass Index (BMI) in older women. Associations between Phase Angle (PhA) with functional tests and blood markers were also analyzed. A total of 46 independent elderly people participated in the study, and they were divided into four groups according to BMI values: Group 1 (G1, BMI < 25 kg/m2); Group 2 (G2, BMI > 25−30 kg/m2); Group 3 (G3, BMI > 30−35 kg/m2); Group 4 (G4, BMI > 35 kg/m2). In addition to the weight and height used to calculate the BMI, the following body composition variables were collected: fat mass (FM), fat-free mass, intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), total body water (TBW) and PhA (50 kHz) through InBody S10 equipment. Functional capacity was assessed using the Fullerton battery of tests: arm-curl; chair-stand; 6 min walking test (6MWT); time up-and-go test (TUG); standing on one leg (SOOL) and take 10 foot-lines (10FL). The main results showed differences between groups in the tests: 6MWT, SOOL and 10FL between G1 vs. G3 and G2 vs. G3 (p < 0.05); ACT, AIC and AEC between G1 vs. G4 (p < 0.05); FM among all groups (p < 0.05). Negative correlations were found between PhA and the agility test in G1 (r = −0.848; p = 0.008) and G4 (r = −0.909; p = 0.005); PhA and chair-stand in G3 (r = 0.527; p = 0.044); PhA and forearm flexion in G3 (r = 0.641; p = 0.010) and G4 (r = 0.943; p = 0.001); PhA and 6MWT in G4 (r = 0.771; p = 0.042). This study found that there is a clear trend towards better functional capacities with better parameters of body composition. Although there were no differences between groups in PhA, associations were found between different functional tests with PhA, which reveals the importance of this variable as a marker of health status.

Abstract
Background: The pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus is complex and still unclear in some details. The main feature of diabetes mellitus is high serum glucose, and the question arises of whether there are other statistically observable dysregulations in laboratory measurements before the state of hyperglycemia becomes severe. In the present study, we aim to examine glucose and lipid profiles in the context of age, sex, medication use, and mortality. Methods: We conducted an observational study by analyzing laboratory data from 506,083 anonymized laboratory tests from 63,606 different patients performed by a regional laboratory in Slovenia between 2008 and 2019. Laboratory data-based results were evaluated in the context of medication use and mortality. The medication use database contains anonymized records of 1,632,441 patients from 2013 to 2018, and mortality data were obtained for the entire Slovenian population. Results: We show that the highest percentage of the population with elevated glucose levels occurs approximately 20 years later than the highest percentage with lipid dysregulation. Remarkably, two distinct inflection points were observed in these laboratory results. The first inflection point occurs at ages 55 to 59 years, corresponding to the greatest increase in medication use, and the second coincides with the sharp increase in mortality at ages 75 to 79 years. Conclusions: Our results suggest that medications and mortality are important factors affecting population statistics and must be considered when studying metabolic disorders such as dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia using laboratory data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The emergence of coronary heart disease is increased with menopause, physical inactivity and with dyslipidemia. Physical training is known to promote the improvement of cardiovascular functions. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of aerobic physical training on the left ventricle in ovariectomized LDL knockout mice. METHODS Thirty animals were divided into 6 groups (n = 5): Sedentary non-ovariectomized control; Sedentary ovariectomized control; Trained ovariectomized control; Sedentary non-ovariectomized LDL-knockout, sedentary ovariectomized LDL-knockout and trained ovariectomized LDL-knockout. We analyzed the average parameters of apparent density of collagen fibers types I and III, and metalloproteinase type 2 and type 9, were considered significant p < 0.05. RESULTS The results showed that the proposed exercise protocol altered the volume of type I collagen fibers, altered collagen remodeling parameters (MMP-2), and also reduced the 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) oxidative stress parameter. CONCLUSION Moderate intensity aerobic training acts on collagen fiber volume, on collagen remodeling with the reduction of oxidative stress in the left ventricles of ovariectomized LDL-knockout mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of statins on all-cause mortality risk at different low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, and to compare the mortality risk between statin users and non-users with identical LDL-C levels in a type 2 diabetes cohort. METHODS In total, 10,582 outpatients aged ≥18 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) between 2009 and 2012 were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study in central Taiwan. All-cause mortality events were followed up until the end of 2014. According to the medical records during the follow-up period, the patients were classified into statin (+) and statin (-) groups. Patients were categorized into different LDL-C segments based on their mean LDL-C levels during the 2.8-year follow-up. RESULTS Non-cardiovascular mortality accounted for more than half the deaths. Overall, statin therapy significantly reduced the all-cause mortality risk in both univariable and multivariable models (hazard ratios = 0.39 and 0.38, respectively). Sub-group analyses showed that the lowest mortality risk occurred in the 80-89 mg/dL segment in the statin (-) group and in the 90-99 mg/dL segment in the statin (+) group. Statin therapy significantly reduced the mortality risk at all LDL-C levels except for low LDL-C (<60 mg/dL). CONCLUSIONS In addition to reducing LDL-C levels, statin therapy reduced all-cause mortality risk in Taiwanese patients with T2DM. Statins further reduced the mortality risk at most LDL levels. However, at low LDL-C levels, the positive effects of statins may have been nullified.

Abstract
Background Atherogenic dyslipidemia (AD) is a blood serum lipid profile abnormality characterized by elevation of triglycerides and reduced levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). It is associated with residual cardiovascular risk. This study evaluated and compared the risk profiles of patients with hypertriglyceridemia, low-HDL-C levels or AD, in order to understand, which lipid profile is associated with greater risk. Methods During the period of 2009–2016 a population of 92,373 Lithuanian adults (men 40–54 years old and women 50–64 years old) without overt cardiovascular disease were analyzed. Data of 25,746 patients (68.6% women and 31.4% men) with hypertriglyceridemia and/or low HDL-C low levels were collected and used for further statistical analysis. Results Participants with AD tend to have more unfavorable risk profile than participants with hypertriglyceridemia or low-HDL-C. AD tends to cluster with other atherogenic risk factors, such as arterial hypertension [odds ratio (OR) 1.96, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.87–2.01], smoking [OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.14–1.27], diabetes mellitus [OR 2.74, 95% CI 2.58–2.90], obesity [OR 2.92, 95% CI 2.78–3.10], metabolic syndrome [OR 22.27, 95% CI 20.69–23.97], unbalanced diet [OR 1,59, 95% CI 1.51–1.68], low physical activity [OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.71–1,89], CHD history in first degree relatives [OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.12–1.25] and total number of risk factors [OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.38–1.57]. Conclusion AD is associated with more unfavorable cardiovascular risk profile than hypertriglyceridemia or low-HDL cholesterol levels. Once identified AD should require additional medical attention since it is an important factor of residual cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Thyroid dysfunction, manifesting as either overt or subclinical hypothyroidism, negatively affects lipid metabolism: this leads to hypercholesterolemia which progressively increases the risk for cardiovascular disease and, potentially, mortality. Hypercholesterolemia in hypothyroidism is mainly due to a reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor activity, this accompanied by concomitant diminishing control by triiodothyronine (T3) of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP-2), which modulates cholesterol biosynthesis by regulating rate-limit degrading enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA) activity. Recently, 3,5-diiodothyronine (T2), a natural thyroid hormone derivative, was found to repress the transcription factor carbohydrate-response element-binding protein (ChREBP) and also to be involved in lipid catabolism and lipogenesis, though via a different pathway than that of T3. While thyroid hormone could therapeutically reverse the dyslipidemic profile commonly occurring in hypothyroidism, it should be borne in mind that the potency of the effects may be age-and sex-dependent. Thyroid hormone administration possibly also sustains and enhances the efficacy of hypolipidemic drugs, such as statins, ezetimibe and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), in patients with dyslipidemia and hypothyroidism.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: The emergence of coronary heart disease increases with menopause, physical inactivity and with dyslipidemia. It is known that physical training promotes the improvement of cardiovascular functions. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic physical training on the left ventricle in female LDL knockout ovariectomized mice. Methods: Thirty animals were divided into 6 groups (n=5), namely, sedentary non-ovariectomized control; sedentary ovariectomized control; trained ovariectomized control; sedentary non-ovariectomized; sedentary ovariectomized; and trained ovariectomized. We analyzed the mean nuclear volume parameters, the cross sectional area of the myocytes, the apparent density of the capillaries, interstitium, myocytes and collagen fibers. Results: The results show that for the density of the number of nuclei, the physical activity decreased to values close to the ovariectomized control group. Regarding the mean nuclear volume and the average area of myocytes, training and ovariectomy promoted the elevation of these values but hypercholesterolemia was lower. the volume density of myocytes, hypercholesterolemia showed an increase of these values as well as the training. There was no change in the volumetric density of the capillaries and the density of collagen fibers. The training caused the decrease in the density of the interstitial volume, and the hypercholesterolemia changed to a smaller one than the control group. Conclusion: We concluded that the moderate aerobic activity or the training time used in our study were not sufficient to generate significant alterations in the hypercholesterolemic group.

Abstract
Serum lipid management in patients aged ≥ 75 has not been precisely explored. We, therefore, compared the serum lipid management between the two age groups with and without coronary heart disease (CHD). We, therefore, retrospectively reviewed medical charts of patients who were hospitalized in the departments of internal medicine during a period of 14 months. Serum lipid goal attainment was explored by applying the lipid goals for patients aged < 75 to those aged ≥ 75. In 1988 enrolled patients, 717 subjects (36.1%) were aged ≥ 75. Among them, 41.3% and 32.4% of the patients had CHD, 44.2% and 41.0% were primary prevention at high-risk, and 14.5% and 14.6% were primary prevention at moderate-risk in patients aged ≥ 75 and aged < 75, respectively. Serum LDL-C goal achievement rates in CHD were 66.9% and 65.0% in patients aged ≥ 75 and < 75, respectively (p = 0.334). In the primary prevention at high-risk, these rates were 73.5% and 63.3%, in patients aged ≥ 75 and < 75, respectively (p = 0.001). They were 77.9% and 58.1% in primary prevention at moderate-risk aged ≥ 75 and < 75, respectively (p < 0.001). In CHD, lipid-lowering medication subscription rates were significantly lower in patients aged ≥ 75 (60.1%) than those aged < 75 (73.8%, p < 0.001). In conclusion, in CHD, serum lipid goal attainment was comparable between the two age groups although the lipid-lowering drugs were less frequently prescribed in patients aged ≥ 75. Without CHD, it was significantly better in patients aged ≥ 75 than those aged < 75 although the lipid-lowering drug subscription rates were comparable between the two age groups.

Abstract
Background The age-related dysfunction of glucose and lipid metabolism has a long-standing relationship with cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disease. However, the effects of metabolic dysfunction on men and women are different. Reasons for these sex differences remains unclear. Cynomolgus monkeys have been used, in the past, for the study of human metabolic diseases due to their biologically proximity to humans. Nevertheless, few studies to date have focused on both age- and sex-related differences in glucose and lipid metabolism. The present study was designed to specifically address these questions by using a large cohort of cynomolgus monkeys (N = 1,399) including 433 males and 966 females with ages ranging 4 to 24 years old. Methods Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and lipid parameters including total cholesterol (T-Cho), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured. All these parameters were compared between ages and sexes. Results Among the entire cohort, age was strongly correlated with levels of FPG, TG and HDL. Consequently, sex-related analysis revealed that females had significantly higher average levels of FPG, T-Cho, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C than their male counterparts. In addition, more female (28.5 %) than male (16 %) monkeys qualified for impaired fasting plasma glucose (IFPG). In those IFPG animals, sex-related differences were also detected i.e. females had significantly increased levels of T-Cho, TG and LDL-C. Conclusions The result, for the first time, demonstrated the similarities and differences in detail between male and female cynomolgus monkeys in relationship to age-related glucose and lipoprotein metabolisms, and differences under various physiological conditions. The detailed glucose and lipoprotein profiling should provide additional and important insights for prediabetic conditions. Cynomolgus monkeys appear to be an excellent model for translational research of diabetes and for novel therapeutic strategies testing to overt diabetes.

Abstract
The role of Clusterin in attenuation of inflammation and reverse cholesterol transfer makes this molecule a potential candidate as a marker for cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. In elderly subjects cardiovascular diseases represent the primary cause of death and different clinical studies have shown a positive correlation of these diseases with changes in the lipid pattern. This work aimed at evaluating the relationship between circulating clusterin and the biochemical parameters that characterize the lipid profile of a Sardinian population divided into five age groups including centenarians; the high frequency in Sardinia of these long-lived individuals gave us the opportunity to extend the range of the age groups to be analyzed to older ages and to better evaluate the changes in the lipid balance during ageing and its relationship with clusterin concentration in plasma. Our results showed that Clusterin concentration values of the youngest group were more similar with the centenarian's group compared to the other age groups, and a positive correlation arises with LDL. Furthermore given the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in the population examined and the association of Clusterin with these pathologies we evaluated Clusterin concentration variation in two groups with or without cardiovascular diseases. In presence of cardiovascular disease, Clusterin is significantly related to the most atherogenic components of lipid profile (total cholesterol and LDL), especially in women, suggesting its potential role in modulating cardiovascular metabolic risk factors.

Abstract
Elderly adults constitute a rapidly growing part of the global population, thus resulting in an increase in morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), which remains the major cause of death in elderly population, including men and women. Dyslipidemia is a well-established risk factor for CVD and is estimated to account for more than half of the worldwide cases of coronary artery disease (CAD). Many studies have shown a strong correlation between serum cholesterol levels and risk of developing CAD. In this paper, we review the changes of plasma lipids that occur in men and women during aging and the potential mechanisms of age-related disorders of lipoprotein metabolism covering humans and/or animals, in which changes of the liver sinusoidal endothelium, postprandial lipemia, insulin resistance induced by free fatty acid (FFA), growth hormone (GH), androgen (only for men) and expression and activity of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) are mainly focused.

AbstractObjectiveAlthough emerging evidence indicates an association between vitamin D and serum lipids, the data are still inconsistent. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-hydroxyvitamin D3; 25(OH)D3) or intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) was independently related to serum lipids in elderly women and men.DesignCross-sectional study. Fasting serum levels of 25(OH)D3, iPTH, TAG, total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) were assessed. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Lifestyle factors, such as nutrient intake, time spent outdoors, physical activity, smoking, supplement intake and medication, were assessed by questionnaires. Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine associations of 25(OH)D3and iPTH with serum lipids.SettingGiessen, Germany.SubjectsOne hundred and ninety-three well-functioning German elderly aged 66–96 years.ResultsAfter adjusting for age, body fat, physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, lipid-modifying drugs and either iPTH or 25(OH)D3, 25(OH)D3was a predictor of TAG (standardised coefficient beta (β)=–0·180), HDL-C (β=0·197), LDL-C:HDL-C (β=−0·298) and TC:HDL-C (β=−0·302) in women, whereas iPTH was a predictor of HDL-C (β=−0·297) in men. In sub-analysis, associations between 25(OH)D3and TC (β=−0·252), HDL-C (β=0·230), LDL-C (β=−0·324), LDL-C:HDL-C (β=−0·412) and TC:HDL-C (β=−0·380) were found in women with 25(OH)D3concentrations above or equal the median vitamin D status (62·3 nmol/l), but not in women with lower 25(OH)D3concentrations.ConclusionsIn the elderly, associations of 25(OH)D3and iPTH with serum lipids may differ by sex and may require a vitamin D status above 62 nmol/l.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conflicting data are reported on the association between mild thyroid failure and lipid profile, primarily regarding serum triglyceride values and patients with slightly elevated thyrotropin (TSH, <10 mIU/L). In this study, we assessed the possible influence of gender and age on this relationship. METHODS The study included 2308 consecutive patients who were seen for suspected or diagnosed thyroid disease (1874 women, 434 men, mean age 47.5±14.1 and 46.9±14.0 years, respectively) and on whom studies of thyroid status and lipoprotein profile were conducted after an overnight fast. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and those taking lipid-lowering drugs were excluded. RESULTS There were 628 patients receiving L-thyroxine who had a diagnosis of hypothyroidism: 200 were hyperthyroid, and 120 were still hypothyroid. Overall, 648 patients were hypothyroid, and 290 were hyperthyroid. No gender difference in the frequency of TSH values in the ranges studied (i.e., TSH frequency distribution) was observed. Total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) values (p<0.0003 and p<0.003, respectively) as well as the LDL/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) ratio (p<0.03) were elevated not only in unselected women with TSH values in the 4th TSH group (>10 mIU/L) but also in those of the 3rd group (3.6-10.0 mIU/L) who were older than 50 years (TC and LDLc p=0.01, LDL/HDLc ratio p=0.02 vs. euthyroid women). Among unselected men, only those of the 4th TSH group had elevated triglyceride (p<0.0001) but not cholesterol values. However, men of the 3rd and 4th TSH group who were older than 65 years had significantly higher TC, LDLc, and LDL/HDLc values as well (p=0.03, p=0.02 and p=0.01, respectively vs. euthyroid men). In the final model of stepwise regression for predicting each lipid parameter variation on the basis of age, TSH, free thyroxine (FT4), and body mass index (BMI) analysis, age had the highest standardized coefficient (0.36 and 0.37, respectively), followed by TSH (0.20 and 0.11, respectively) and FT4 (-0.11 and -0.09, respectively) when looking at TC and LDLc; whereas BMI had the highest standardized coefficient (0.28), followed by age (0.15) and TSH (0.11) when looking at triglyceride variation. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms a gender differentiation in the relationship between hypothyroidism and the lipid profile, which is substantially influenced by age, especially in patients with mild thyroid impairment (TSH<10 mIU/L).
