White versus gray matter: fMRI hemodynamic responses show similar characteristics, but differ in peak amplitude

White matter engagement in brain networks assessed by integration of functional and structural connectivity

Current models of brain networks may potentially be improved by integrating our knowledge of structural connections, within and between circuits, with metrics of functional interactions between network nodes. The former may be obtained from diffusion MRI of white matter (WM), while the latter may be derived by measuring correlations between resting state BOLD signals from pairs of gray matter (GM) regions. From inspection of diffusion MRI data, it is clear that each WM voxel within a 3D image array may be traversed by multiple WM structural tracts, each of which connects a pair of GM nodes. We hypothesized that by appropriately weighting and then integrating the functional connectivity of each such connected pair, the overall engagement of any WM voxel in brain functions could be evaluated. This model introduces a structural constraint to earlier studies of WM engagement and addresses some limitations of previous efforts to relate structure and function. Using concepts derived from graph theory, we obtained spatial maps of WM engagement which highlight WM regions critical for efficient communications across the brain. The distributions of WM engagement are highly reproducible across subjects and depict a notable interdependence between the distribution of GM activities and the detailed organization of WM. Additionally, we provide evidence that the engagement varies over time and shows significant differences between genders. These findings suggest the potential of WM engagement as a measure of the integrity of normal brain functions and as a biomarker for neurological and cognitive disorders.

Sub-bundle based analysis reveals the role of human optic radiation in visual working memory

White matter (WM) functional activity has been reliably detected through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Previous studies have primarily examined WM bundles as unified entities, thereby obscuring the functional heterogeneity inherent within these bundles. Here, for the first time, we investigate the function of sub-bundles of a prototypical visual WM tract-the optic radiation (OR). We use the 7T retinotopy dataset from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) to reconstruct OR and further subdivide the OR into sub-bundles based on the fiber's termination in the primary visual cortex (V1). The population receptive field (pRF) model is then applied to evaluate the retinotopic properties of these sub-bundles, and the consistency of the pRF properties of sub-bundles with those of V1 subfields is evaluated. Furthermore, we utilize the HCP working memory dataset to evaluate the activations of the foveal and peripheral OR sub-bundles, along with LGN and V1 subfields, during 0-back and 2-back tasks. We then evaluate differences in 2bk-0bk contrast between foveal and peripheral sub-bundles (or subfields), and further examine potential relationships between 2bk-0bk contrast and 2-back task d-prime. The results show that the pRF properties of OR sub-bundles exhibit standard retinotopic properties and are typically similar to the properties of V1 subfields. Notably, activations during the 2-back task consistently surpass those under the 0-back task across foveal and peripheral OR sub-bundles, as well as LGN and V1 subfields. The foveal V1 displays significantly higher 2bk-0bk contrast than peripheral V1. The 2-back task d-prime shows strong correlations with 2bk-0bk contrast for foveal and peripheral OR fibers. These findings demonstrate that the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals of OR sub-bundles encode high-fidelity visual information, underscoring the feasibility of assessing WM functional activity at the sub-bundle level. Additionally, the study highlights the role of OR in the top-down processes of visual working memory beyond the bottom-up processes for visual information transmission. Conclusively, this study innovatively proposes a novel paradigm for analyzing WM fiber tracts at the individual sub-bundle level and expands understanding of OR function.

Quantification of mediation effects of white matter functional characteristics on cognitive decline in aging

Cognitive decline with aging involves multifactorial processes, including changes in brain structure and function. This study focuses on the role of white matter functional characteristics, as reflected in blood oxygenation level-dependent signals, in age-related cognitive deterioration. Building on previous research confirming the reproducibility and age-dependence of blood oxygenation level-dependent signals acquired via functional magnetic resonance imaging, we here employ mediation analysis to test if aging affects cognition through white matter blood oxygenation level-dependent signal changes, impacting various cognitive domains and specific white matter regions. We used independent component analysis of resting-state blood oxygenation level-dependent signals to segment white matter into coherent hubs, offering a data-driven view of white matter's functional architecture. Through correlation analysis, we constructed a graph network and derived metrics to quantitatively assess regional functional properties based on resting-state blood oxygenation level-dependent fluctuations. Our analysis identified significant mediators in the age-cognition relationship, indicating that aging differentially influences cognitive functions by altering the functional characteristics of distinct white matter regions. These findings enhance our understanding of the neurobiological basis of cognitive aging, highlighting the critical role of white matter in maintaining cognitive integrity and proposing new approaches to assess interventions targeting cognitive decline in older populations.

Identification of functional white matter networks in BOLD fMRI

The imaging was longitudinal with a total of 2,026 images. Hierarchical clustering was performed to investigate clusters of voxel-level correlations on the timeseries data. The stability of clusters was measured with the average Dice coefficients on two different cross fold validations. The first validated the stability between scans, and the second validated the stability between populations. Functional clusters at hierarchical levels 4, 9, 13, 18, and 24 had local maximum stability, suggesting better clustered white matter. In comparison with JHU-DTI-SS Type-I Atlas defined regions, clusters at lower hierarchical levels identified well-defined anatomical lobes. At higher hierarchical levels, functional clusters mapped motor and memory functional regions, identifying 50.00%, 20.00%, 27.27%, and 35.14% of the frontal, occipital, parietal, and temporal lobe regions respectively.

Exploring Physiological Differences in Brain Areas Using Statistical Complexity Analysis of BOLD Signals

The brain is a fundamental organ for the human body to function properly, for which it needs to receive a continuous flow of blood, which explains the existence of control mechanisms that act to maintain this flow as constant as possible in a process known as cerebral autoregulation. One way to obtain information on how the levels of oxygen supplied to the brain vary is through of BOLD (Magnetic Resonance) images, which have the advantage of greater spatial resolution than other forms of measurement, such as transcranial Doppler. However, they do not provide good temporal resolution nor allow for continuous prolonged examination. Thus, it is of great importance to find a method to detect regional differences from short BOLD signals. One of the existing alternatives is complexity measures that can detect changes in the variability and temporal organisation of a signal that could reflect different physiological states. The so-called statistical complexity, created to overcome the shortcomings of entropy alone to explain the concept of complexity, has shown potential with haemodynamic signals. The aim of this study is to determine by using statistical complexity whether it is possible to find differences between physiologically distinct brain areas in healthy individuals. The data set includes BOLD images of 10 people obtained at the University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust with a 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The data were captured for 180 s at a frequency of 1 Hz. Using various combinations of statistical complexities, no differences were found between hemispheres. However, differences were detected between grey matter and white matter, indicating that these measurements are sensitive to differences in brain tissues.

Assessing White Matter Engagement in Brain Networks through Functional and Structural Connectivity Mapping

Understanding the intricate interplay between gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) is crucial for deciphering the complex activities of the brain. While diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has advanced the mapping of these structural pathways, the relationship between structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC) remains inadequately understood. This study addresses the need for a more integrative approach by mapping the importance of the inter-GM functional link to its structural counterparts in WM. This mapping yields a spatial distribution of engagement that is not only highly reproducible but also aligns with direct structural, functional, and bioenergetic measures within WM, illustrating a notable interdependence between the function of GM and the characteristics of WM. Additionally, our research has uncovered a set of unique engagement modes through a clustering analysis of window-wise engagement maps, highlighting the dyanmic nature of the engagement. The engagement along with their temporal variations revealed significant differences across genders and age groups. These findings suggest the potential of WM engagement as a biomarker for neurological and cognitive conditions, offering a more nuanced understanding of individualized brain activity and connectivity patterns.

Whole-brain, gray, and white matter time-locked functional signal changes with simple tasks and model-free analysis

Recent studies have revealed the production of time-locked blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional MRI (fMRI) signals throughout the entire brain in response to tasks, challenging the existence of sparse and localized brain functions and highlighting the pervasiveness of potential false negative fMRI findings. "Whole-brain" actually refers to gray matter, the only tissue traditionally studied with fMRI. However, several reports have demonstrated reliable detection of BOLD signals in white matter, which have previously been largely ignored. Using simple tasks and analyses, we demonstrate BOLD signal changes across the whole brain, in both white and gray matters, in similar manner to previous reports of whole brain studies. We investigated whether white matter displays time-locked BOLD signals across multiple structural pathways in response to a stimulus in a similar manner to the cortex. We find that both white and gray matter show time-locked activations across the whole brain, with a majority of both tissue types showing statistically significant signal changes for all task stimuli investigated. We observed a wide range of signal responses to tasks, with different regions showing different BOLD signal changes to the same task. Moreover, we find that each region may display different BOLD responses to different stimuli. Overall, we present compelling evidence that, just like all gray matter, essentially all white matter in the brain shows time-locked BOLD signal changes in response to multiple stimuli, challenging the idea of sparse functional localization and the prevailing wisdom of treating white matter BOLD signals as artifacts to be removed.

White matter functional gradients and their formation in adolescence

It is well known that functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a widely used tool for studying brain activity. Recent research has shown that fluctuations in fMRI data can reflect functionally meaningful patterns of brain activity within the white matter. We leveraged resting-state fMRI from an adolescent population to characterize large-scale white matter functional gradients and their formation during adolescence. The white matter showed gray-matter-like unimodal-to-transmodal and sensorimotor-to-visual gradients with specific cognitive associations and a unique superficial-to-deep gradient with nonspecific cognitive associations. We propose two mechanisms for their formation in adolescence. One is a "function-molded" mechanism that may mediate the maturation of the transmodal white matter via the transmodal gray matter. The other is a "structure-root" mechanism that may support the mutual mediation roles of the unimodal and transmodal white matter maturation during adolescence. Thus, the spatial layout of the white matter functional gradients is in concert with the gray matter functional organization. The formation of the white matter functional gradients may be driven by brain anatomical wiring and functional needs.

Changes in white matter functional networks across late adulthood

Introduction

The aging brain is characterized by decreases in not only neuronal density but also reductions in myelinated white matter (WM) fibers that provide the essential foundation for communication between cortical regions. Age-related degeneration of WM has been previously characterized by histopathology as well as T2 FLAIR and diffusion MRI. Recent studies have consistently shown that BOLD (blood oxygenation level dependent) effects in WM are robustly detectable, are modulated by neural activities, and thus represent a complementary window into the functional organization of the brain. However, there have been no previous systematic studies of whether or how WM BOLD signals vary with normal aging. We therefore performed a comprehensive quantification of WM BOLD signals across scales to evaluate their potential as indicators of functional changes that arise with aging.

Methods

By using spatial independent component analysis (ICA) of BOLD signals acquired in a resting state, WM voxels were grouped into spatially distinct functional units. The functional connectivities (FCs) within and among those units were measured and their relationships with aging were assessed. On a larger spatial scale, a graph was reconstructed based on the pair-wise connectivities among units, modeling the WM as a complex network and producing a set of graph-theoretical metrics.

Results

The spectral powers that reflect the intensities of BOLD signals were found to be significantly affected by aging across more than half of the WM units. The functional connectivities (FCs) within and among those units were found to decrease significantly with aging. We observed a widespread reduction of graph-theoretical metrics, suggesting a decrease in the ability to exchange information between remote WM regions with aging.

Discussion

Our findings converge to support the notion that WM BOLD signals in specific regions, and their interactions with other regions, have the potential to serve as imaging markers of aging.

Harmonization of repetition time and scanner effects on estimates of brain hemodynamic response function

Multisite contributions are essential to improve the reliability and statistical power of imaging studies but introduce a complexity because of different acquisition protocols and scanners. The hemodynamic response function (HRF) is the transform that relates neural activity to the measured blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal in MRI and contains information about the latency, amplitude, and duration of neuronal activations. Acquisition variabilities, without adding harmonization techniques, can severely limit our ability to characterize spatial effects. To address this problem, we propose to study and remove variabilities of the sampling rate and scanners on estimates of the HRF. We computed the HRF using a blind deconvolution method in 547 subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) across 62 sites and 18 scanners. The approach consists of studying the changes of the response according to repetition times (TR) and scanner models. We applied ComBAT, a statistical multi-site harmonization technique, to evaluate and reduce the scanner and repetition time effects and used the Wilcoxon rank sum test to assess the performance of the harmonization. Results show high scanner and repetition time variabilities (|d| ≥ 0.38, p = 4.5 × 10-5) across features, indicating that using harmonization is crucial in multi-site studies. ComBAT successfully removes the sampling effects and reduces the variance between scanners for 7 out of 10 of the HRF features (|d| ≤ 0.05, p = 0.0052). Scanners effects have been characterized on multi-site datasets, but the repetition time impact has been less studied. We showed that the use of different values of repetition time leads to changes in HRF behavior. Regression modeling changes in the HRF on the harmonized data are not significant (p = 0.0401) which does not allow to conclude how HRF changes with aging.

The human brain networks mediating the vestibular sensation of self-motion

Vestibular Agnosia - where peripheral vestibular activation triggers the usual reflex nystagmus response but with attenuated or no self-motion perception - is found in brain disease with disrupted cortical network functioning, e.g. traumatic brain injury (TBI) or neurodegeneration (Parkinson's Disease). Patients with acute focal hemispheric lesions (e.g. stroke) do not manifest vestibular agnosia. Thus, brain network mapping techniques, e.g. resting state functional MRI (rsfMRI), are needed to interrogate functional brain networks mediating vestibular agnosia. Hence, we prospectively recruited 39 acute TBI patients with preserved peripheral vestibular function and obtained self-motion perceptual thresholds during passive yaw rotations in the dark and additionally acquired whole-brain rsfMRI in the acute phase. Following quality-control checks, 26 patient scans were analyzed. Using self-motion perceptual thresholds from a matched healthy control group, 11 acute TBI patients were classified as having vestibular agnosia versus 15 with normal self-motion perception thresholds. Using independent component analysis on the rsfMRI data, we found altered functional connectivity in bilateral lingual gyrus and temporo-occipital fusiform cortex in the vestibular agnosia patients. Moreover, regions of interest analyses showed both inter-hemispheric and intra-hemispheric network disruption in vestibular agnosia. In conclusion, our results show that vestibular agnosia is mediated by bilateral anterior and posterior network dysfunction and reveal the distributed brain mechanisms mediating vestibular self-motion perception.

Anomalous and heterogeneous characteristics of the BOLD hemodynamic response function in white matter

Detailed knowledge of the BOLD hemodynamic response function (HRF) is crucial for accurate analyses and interpretation of functional MRI data. Considerable efforts have been made to characterize the HRF in gray matter (GM), but much less attention has been paid to BOLD effects in white matter (WM). However, several recent reports have demonstrated reliable detection and analyses of WM BOLD signals both after stimulation and in a resting state. WM and GM differ in composition, energy requirements, and blood flow, so their neurovascular couplings also may well be different. We aimed to derive a comprehensive characterization of the HRF in WM across a population, including accurate measurements of its shape and its variation along and between WM pathways, using resting-state fMRI acquisitions. Our results show that the HRF is significantly different between WM and GM. Features of the HRF, such as a prominent initial dip, show strong relationships with features of the tissue microstructure derived from diffusion imaging, and these relationships differ between WM and GM, consistent with BOLD signal fluctuations reflecting different energy demands and neurovascular couplings in tissues of different composition and function. We also show that the HRF varies in shape significantly along WM pathways and is different between different WM pathways, suggesting the temporal evolution of BOLD signals after an event vary in different parts of the WM. These features of the HRF in WM are especially relevant for interpretation of the biophysical basis of BOLD effects in WM.

Dynamic variations of resting-state BOLD signal spectra in white matter

Recent studies have demonstrated that the mathematical model used for analyzing and interpreting fMRI data in gray matter (GM) is inappropriate for detecting or describing blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signals in white matter (WM). In particular the hemodynamic response function (HRF) which serves as the regressor in general linear models is different in WM compared to GM. We recently reported measurements of the frequency contents of resting-state signal time courses in WM that showed distinct power spectra which depended on local structural-vascular-functional associations. In addition, multiple studies of GM have revealed how functional connectivity between regions, as measured by the correlation between BOLD time series, varies dynamically over time. We therefore investigated whether and how BOLD signals from WM in a resting state varied over time. We measured voxel-wise spectrograms, which reflect the time-varying spectral patterns of WM time courses. The results suggest that the spectral patterns are non-stationary but could be categorized into five modes that recurred over time. These modes showed distinct spatial distributions of their occurrences and durations, and the distributions were highly consistent across individuals. In addition, one of the modes exhibited a strong coupling of its occurrence between GM and WM across individuals, and two communities of WM voxels were identified according to the hierarchical structures of transitions among modes. Moreover, these modes are coupled to the shape of instantaneous HRFs. Our findings extend previous studies and reveal the non-stationary nature of spectral patterns of BOLD signals over time, providing a spatial-temporal-frequency characterization of resting-state signals in WM.

Diffusion-informed spatial smoothing of fMRI data in white matter using spectral graph filters

Brain activation mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been extensively studied in brain gray matter (GM), whereas in large disregarded for probing white matter (WM). This unbalanced treatment has been in part due to controversies in relation to the nature of the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast in WM and its detectability. However, an accumulating body of studies has provided solid evidence of the functional significance of the BOLD signal in WM and has revealed that it exhibits anisotropic spatio-temporal correlations and structure-specific fluctuations concomitant with those of the cortical BOLD signal. In this work, we present an anisotropic spatial filtering scheme for smoothing fMRI data in WM that accounts for known spatial constraints on the BOLD signal in WM. In particular, the spatial correlation structure of the BOLD signal in WM is highly anisotropic and closely linked to local axonal structure in terms of shape and orientation, suggesting that isotropic Gaussian filters conventionally used for smoothing fMRI data are inadequate for denoising the BOLD signal in WM. The fundamental element in the proposed method is a graph-based description of WM that encodes the underlying anisotropy observed across WM, derived from diffusion-weighted MRI data. Based on this representation, and leveraging graph signal processing principles, we design subject-specific spatial filters that adapt to a subject's unique WM structure at each position in the WM that they are applied at. We use the proposed filters to spatially smooth fMRI data in WM, as an alternative to the conventional practice of using isotropic Gaussian filters. We test the proposed filtering approach on two sets of simulated phantoms, showcasing its greater sensitivity and specificity for the detection of slender anisotropic activations, compared to that achieved with isotropic Gaussian filters. We also present WM activation mapping results on the Human Connectome Project's 100-unrelated subject dataset, across seven functional tasks, showing that the proposed method enables the detection of streamline-like activations within axonal bundles.

Hemodynamic Response Function in Brain White Matter in a Resting State

The hemodynamic response function (HRF) characterizes temporal variations of blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signals. Although a variety of HRF models have been proposed for gray matter responses to functional demands, few studies have investigated HRF profiles in white matter particularly under resting conditions. In the present work we quantified the nature of the HRFs that are embedded in resting state BOLD signals in white matter, and which modulate the temporal fluctuations of baseline signals. We demonstrate that resting state HRFs in white matter could be derived by referencing to intrinsic avalanches in gray matter activities, and the derived white matter HRFs had reduced peak amplitudes and delayed peak times as compared with those in gray matter. Distributions of the time delays and correlation profiles in white matter depend on gray matter activities as well as white matter tract distributions, indicating that resting state BOLD signals in white matter encode neural activities associated with those of gray matter. This is the first investigation of derivations and characterizations of resting state HRFs in white matter and their relations to gray matter activities. Findings from this work have important implications for analysis of BOLD signals in the brain.

Concomitant modulation of BOLD responses in white matter pathways and cortex

In response to a flickering visual stimulus, the BOLD response in primary visual cortex varies with the flickering frequency and is maximal when it is close to 8Hz. In previous studies we demonstrated that BOLD signals in specific white matter (WM) pathways covary with the alternations between stimulus conditions in a block design in similar manner to gray matter (GM) regions. Here we investigated whether WM tracts show varying responses to changes in flicker frequency and are modulated in the same manner as cortical areas. We used a Fourier analysis of BOLD signals to measure the signal amplitude and phase at the fundamental frequency of a block-design task in which flickering visual stimuli alternated with blank presentations, avoiding the assumption of any specific hemodynamic response function. The BOLD responses in WM pathways and the primary visual cortex were evaluated for flicker frequencies varying between 2 and 14Hz. The variations with frequency of BOLD signals in specific WM tracts followed closely those in primary visual cortex, suggesting that variations in cortical activation are directly coupled to corresponding BOLD signals in connected WM tracts. Statistically significant differences in the timings of BOLD responses were also measured between visual cortex and specific WM bundles. These results confirm that when cortical BOLD responses are modulated by selecting different task parameters, relevant WM tracts exhibit corresponding BOLD signals that are also affected.

The Contribution of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to the Understanding of the Effects of Acute Physical Exercise on Cognition

The fact that a single bout of acute physical exercise has a positive impact on cognition is well-established in the literature, but the neural correlates that underlie these cognitive improvements are not well understood. Here, the use of neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), offers great potential, which is just starting to be recognized. This review aims at providing an overview of those studies that used fMRI to investigate the effects of acute physical exercises on cerebral hemodynamics and cognition. To this end, a systematic literature survey was conducted by two independent reviewers across five electronic databases. The search returned 668 studies, of which 14 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this systematic review. Although the findings of the reviewed studies suggest that acute physical exercise (e.g., cycling) leads to profound changes in functional brain activation, the small number of available studies and the great variability in the study protocols limits the conclusions that can be drawn with certainty. In order to overcome these limitations, new, more well-designed trials are needed that (i) use a more rigorous study design, (ii) apply more sophisticated filter methods in fMRI data analysis, (iii) describe the applied processing steps of fMRI data analysis in more detail, and (iv) provide a more precise exercise prescription.

Structural mediation of human brain activity revealed by white-matter interpolation of fMRI

Understanding how the anatomy of the human brain constrains and influences the formation of large-scale functional networks remains a fundamental question in neuroscience. Here, given measured brain activity in gray matter, we interpolate these functional signals into the white matter on a structurally-informed high-resolution voxel-level brain grid. The interpolated volumes reflect the underlying anatomical information, revealing white matter structures that mediate the interaction between temporally coherent gray matter regions. Functional connectivity analyses of the interpolated volumes reveal an enriched picture of the default mode network (DMN) and its subcomponents, including the different white matter bundles that are implicated in their formation, thus extending currently known spatial patterns that are limited within the gray matter only. These subcomponents have distinct structure-function patterns, each of which are differentially observed during tasks, demonstrating plausible structural mechanisms for functional switching between task-positive and -negative components. This work opens new avenues for the integration of brain structure and function, and demonstrates the collective mediation of white matter pathways across short and long-distance functional connections.

Altered Resting State Functional Activity and Microstructure of the White Matter in Migraine With Aura

Introduction: Brain structure and function were reported to be altered in migraine. Importantly our earlier results showed that white matter diffusion abnormalities and resting state functional activity were affected differently in the two subtypes of the disease, migraine with and without aura. Resting fluctuation of the BOLD signal in the white matter was reported recently. The question arising whether the white matter activity, that is strongly coupled with gray matter activity is also perturbed differentially in the two subtypes of the disease and if so, is it related to the microstructural alterations of the white matter.

Methods: Resting state fMRI, 60 directional DTI images and high-resolution T1 images were obtained from 51 migraine patients and 32 healthy volunteers. The images were pre-processed and the white matter was extracted. Independent component analysis was performed to obtain white matter functional networks. The differential expression of the white matter functional networks in the two subtypes of the disease was investigated with dual-regression approach. The Fourier spectrum of the resting fMRI fluctuations were compared between groups. Voxel-wise correlation was calculated between the resting state functional activity fluctuations and white matter microstructural measures.

Results: Three white matter networks were identified that were expressed differently in migraine with and without aura. Migraineurs with aura showed increased functional connectivity and amplitude of BOLD fluctuation. Fractional anisotropy and radial diffusivity showed strong correlation with the expression of the frontal white matter network in patients with aura.

Discussion: Our study is the first to describe changes in white matter resting state functional activity in migraine with aura, showing correlation with the underlying microstructure. Functional and structural differences between disease subtypes suggest at least partially different pathomechanism, which may necessitate handling of these subtypes as separate entities in further studies.

Adolescent suicide attempts and ideation are linked to brain function during peer interactions

Understanding the neural correlates of social interaction among depressed adolescents with suicidal tendencies might help personalize treatment. We tested whether brain function during social interaction is disrupted for depressed adolescents with (1) high suicide ideation and (2) recent attempts. Depressed adolescents with high suicide ideation, including attempters (n = 45;HS) or low suicide ideation (n = 42;LS), and healthy adolescents (n = 39;HC), completed a version of the Cyberball peer interaction task during an fMRI scan. Groups were compared on brain activity during peer exclusion and inclusion versus a non-social condition. During peer exclusion and inclusion, HS youth showed significantly lower activity in precentral and postcentral gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus, insula, and putamen compared to LS youth; and significantly reduced activity in caudate and anterior cingulate cortex compared to HC youth. In a second analysis, suicide attempters (n = 26;SA) were compared to other groups. SA adolescents showed significantly higher activity in ACC and superior and middle frontal gyrus than all other groups. Brain activity was significantly correlated with negative emotionality, social functioning, and cognitive control. Conclusions: Adolescent suicide ideation and attempts were linked to altered neural function during positive and negative peer interactions. We discuss the implications of these findings for suicide prevention efforts.

Characterization of the hemodynamic response function in white matter tracts for event-related fMRI

Accurate estimates of the BOLD hemodynamic response function (HRF) are crucial for the interpretation and analysis of event-related functional MRI data. To date, however, there have been no comprehensive measurements of the HRF in white matter (WM) despite increasing evidence that BOLD signals in WM change after a stimulus. We performed an event-related cognitive task (Stroop color-word interference) to measure the HRF in selected human WM pathways. The task was chosen in order to produce robust, distributed centers of activity throughout the cortex. To measure the HRF in WM, fiber tracts were reconstructed between each pair of activated cortical areas. We observed clear task-specific HRFs with reduced magnitudes, delayed onsets and prolonged initial dips in WM tracts compared with activated grey matter, thus calling for significant changes to current standard models for accurately characterizing the HRFs in WM and for modifications of standard methods of analysis of functional imaging data.

Resting-state white matter-cortical connectivity in non-human primate brain

Numerous studies have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to characterize functional connectivity between cortical regions by analyzing correlations in blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signals in a resting state. However, to date, there have been only a handful of studies reporting resting state BOLD signals in white matter. Nonetheless, a growing number of reports has emerged in recent years suggesting white matter BOLD signals can be reliably detected, though their biophysical origins remain unclear. Moreover, recent studies have identified robust correlations in a resting state between signals from cortex and specific white matter tracts. In order to further validate and interpret these findings, we studied a non-human primate model to investigate resting-state connectivity patterns between parcellated cortical volumes and specific white matter bundles. Our results show that resting-state connectivity patterns between white and gray matter structures are not randomly distributed but share notable similarities with diffusion- and histology-derived anatomic connectivities. This suggests that resting-state BOLD correlations between white matter fiber tracts and the gray matter regions to which they connect are directly related to the anatomic arrangement and density of WM fibers. We also measured how different levels of baseline neural activity, induced by varying levels of anesthesia, modulate these patterns. As anesthesia levels were raised, we observed weakened correlation coefficients between specific white matter tracts and gray matter regions while key features of the connectivity pattern remained similar. Overall, results from this study provide further evidence that neural activity is detectable by BOLD fMRI in both gray and white matter throughout the resting brain. The combined use of gray and white matter functional connectivity could also offer refined full-scale functional parcellation of the entire brain to characterize its functional architecture.

Voxel-wise detection of functional networks in white matter

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) depicts neural activity in the brain indirectly by measuring blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signals. The majority of fMRI studies have focused on detecting cortical activity in gray matter (GM), but whether functional BOLD signal changes also arise in white matter (WM), and whether neural activities trigger hemodynamic changes in WM similarly to GM, remain controversial, particularly in light of the much lower vascular density in WM. However, BOLD effects in WM are readily detected under hypercapnic challenges, and the number of reports supporting reliable detections of stimulus-induced activations in WM continues to grow. Rather than assume a particular hemodynamic response function, we used a voxel-by-voxel analysis of frequency spectra in WM to detect WM activations under visual stimulation, whose locations were validated with fiber tractography using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We demonstrate that specific WM regions are robustly activated in response to visual stimulation, and that regional distributions of WM activation are consistent with fiber pathways reconstructed using DTI. We further examined the variation in the concordance between WM activation and fiber density in groups of different sample sizes, and compared the signal profiles of BOLD time series between resting state and visual stimulation conditions in activated GM as well as activated and non-activated WM regions. Our findings confirm that BOLD signal variations in WM are modulated by neural activity and are detectable with conventional fMRI using appropriate methods, thus offering the potential of expanding functional connectivity measurements throughout the brain.

Thermal Stimulation Changes Diffusivity of the Spinothalamic Tract

STUDY DESIGN

An experimental study.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate task-dependent changes in fractional anisotropy (FA) within the spinal cord during painful stimulation.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA

Earlier experiments by Mandl et al (2008, 2013) used non-invasive functional diffusion tensor imaging (fDTI) to detect white matter fibers that were active during functional tasks. In two studies, it was observed that FA of involved white matter tracts exhibited repeatable task-related increases. In this study, we attempted to extend the fDTI work in the spinal cord.

METHODS

Twenty-three healthy, right-handed men (mean age 22 yrs, standard deviation [SD] = 4) were invited to participate in this study. Diffusion-weighted images were collected over spinal levels C2 to T4 during a painful thermal stimulus applied to the left thenar eminence. In order to investigate task-related activity, FA values within the contralateral (right) spinothalamic tract were analyzed using a generalized estimating equations (GEE) procedure. As a control, we also examined activity in the ipsilateral and contralateral corticospinal tracts, which are not considered to be involved in nociception.

RESULTS

Significant task-related decreases in FA were observed in the right spinothalamic tract at vertebral levels C2-C5 (Wald X(1) = 17.754, P < 0.001). There was no change in control regions at levels C7-T2 of the same tract, which are located below the level of input from dermatome C6, Wald X(1) = 0.185, P = 0.667. Results in all other regions assessed, that is, the left spinothalamic tract and bilateral corticospinal tract, were also not significant (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The current findings suggest that task-related changes in FA associated with the transmission of pain signals along the spinal cord can be detected using fDTI. We observed decreased FA values in the contralateral (right) spinothalamic tract following painful stimulation, while no such activity was apparent in control regions.

Contribution of systemic vascular effects to fMRI activity in white matter

To investigate a potential contribution of systemic physiology to recently reported BOLD fMRI signals in white matter, we compared photo-plethysmography (PPG) and whole-brain fMRI signals recorded simultaneously during long resting-state scans from an overnight sleep study. We found that intermittent drops in the amplitude of the PPG signal exhibited strong and widespread correlations with the fMRI signal, both in white matter (WM) and in gray matter (GM). The WM signal pattern resembled that seen in previous resting-state fMRI studies and closely tracked the location of medullary veins. Its temporal cross-correlation with the PPG amplitude was bipolar, with an early negative value. In GM, the correlation was consistently positive. Consistent with previous studies comparing physiological signals with fMRI, these findings point to a systemic vascular contribution to WM fMRI signals. The PPG drops are interpreted as systemic vasoconstrictive events, possibly related to intermittent increases in sympathetic tone related to fluctuations in arousal state. The counter-intuitive polarity of the WM signal is explained by long blood transit times in the medullary vasculature of WM, which cause blood oxygenation loss and a substantial timing mismatch between blood volume and blood oxygenation effects. A similar mechanism may explain previous findings of negative WM signals around large draining veins during both task- and resting-state fMRI.

Detecting white matter activity using conventional 3 Tesla fMRI: An evaluation of standard field strength and hemodynamic response function

Detection of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation in white matter has been increasingly reported despite historically being controversial. Much of the development work to-date has used high-field 4 T MRI and specialized pulse sequences. In the current study, we utilized conventional 3 T MRI and a commonly applied gradient-echo-planar imaging sequence to evaluate white matter (WM) fMRI sensitivity within a common framework. Functional WM activity was replicated in target regions of interest within the corpus callosum, at the group and individual levels. As expected there was a reduction in overall WM activation sensitivity. Individual analyses revealed that 8 of the 13 individuals showed white matter activation, showing a lower percentage of individuals with WM activation detected. Importantly, WM activation results were sensitive to analyses that applied alternate hemodynamic response functions, with an increase in the group level cluster when hemodynamic response function (HRF) onset slope was reduced. The findings supported the growing evidence that WM activation is detectable, with activation levels are closer to thresholds used for routine 3T MRI studies. Optimization factors, such as the HRF model, appear to be important to further enhance the characterization of WM activity in fMRI.

Evidence for Functional Networks within the Human Brain's White Matter

Investigation of the functional macro-scale organization of the human cortex is fundamental in modern neuroscience. Although numerous studies have identified networks of interacting functional modules in the gray-matter, limited research was directed to the functional organization of the white-matter. Recent studies have demonstrated that the white-matter exhibits blood oxygen level-dependent signal fluctuations similar to those of the gray-matter. Here we used these signal fluctuations to investigate whether the white-matter is organized as functional networks by applying a clustering analysis on resting-state functional MRI (RSfMRI) data from white-matter voxels, in 176 subjects (of both sexes). This analysis indicated the existence of 12 symmetrical white-matter functional networks, corresponding to combinations of white-matter tracts identified by diffusion tensor imaging. Six of the networks included interhemispheric commissural bridges traversing the corpus callosum. Signals in white-matter networks correlated with signals from functional gray-matter networks, providing missing knowledge on how these distributed networks communicate across large distances. These findings were replicated in an independent subject group and were corroborated by seed-based analysis in small groups and individual subjects. The identified white-matter functional atlases and analysis codes are available at http://mind.huji.ac.il/white-matter.aspx Our results demonstrate that the white-matter manifests an intrinsic functional organization as interacting networks of functional modules, similarly to the gray-matter, which can be investigated using RSfMRI. The discovery of functional networks within the white-matter may open new avenues of research in cognitive neuroscience and clinical neuropsychiatry.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT In recent years, functional MRI (fMRI) has revolutionized all fields of neuroscience, enabling identifications of functional modules and networks in the human brain. However, most fMRI studies ignored a major part of the brain, the white-matter, discarding signals from it as arising from noise. Here we use resting-state fMRI data from 176 subjects to show that signals from the human white-matter contain meaningful information. We identify 12 functional networks composed of interacting long-distance white-matter tracts. Moreover, we show that these networks are highly correlated to resting-state gray-matter networks, highlighting their functional role. Our findings enable reinterpretation of many existing fMRI datasets, and suggest a new way to explore the white-matter role in cognition and its disturbances in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Reliability of the depth-dependent high-resolution BOLD hemodynamic response in human visual cortex and vicinity

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) often relies on a hemodynamic response function (HRF), the stereotypical blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) response elicited by a brief (<4s) stimulus. Early measurements of the HRF used coarse spatial resolutions (≥3mm voxels) that would generally include contributions from white matter, gray matter, and the extra-pial compartment (the space between the pial surface and skull including pial blood vessels) within each voxel. To resolve these contributions, high-resolution fMRI (0.9-mm voxels) was performed at 3T in early visual cortex and its apposed white-matter and extra-pial compartments. The results characterized the depth dependence of the HRF and its reliability during nine fMRI sessions. Significant HRFs were observed in white-matter and extra-pial compartments as well as in gray matter. White-matter HRFs were faster and weaker than in the gray matter, while extra-pial HRFs were comparatively slower and stronger. Depth trends of the HRF peak amplitude were stable throughout a broad depth range that included all three compartments for each session. Across sessions, however, the depth trend of HRF peak amplitudes was stable only in the white matter and deep-intermediate gray matter, while there were strong session-to-session variations in the superficial gray matter and the extra-pial compartment. Thus, high-resolution fMRI can resolve significant and dynamically distinct HRFs in gray matter, white matter, and extra-pial compartments.

Effects of anesthesia on resting state BOLD signals in white matter of non-human primates

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) has been widely used to measure functional connectivity between cortical regions of the brain. However, there have been minimal reports of bold oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signals in white matter, and even fewer attempts to detect resting state connectivity. Recently, there has been growing evidence that suggests that reliable detection of white matter BOLD signals may be possible. We have previously shown that nearest neighbor inter-voxel correlations of resting state BOLD signal fluctuations in white matter are anisotropic and can be represented by a functional correlation tensor, but the biophysical origins of these signal variations are not clear. We aimed to assess whether MRI signal fluctuations in white matter vary for different baseline levels of neural activity. We performed imaging studies on live squirrel monkeys under different levels of isoflurane anesthesia at 9.4T. We found 1) the fractional power (0.01-0.08Hz) in white matter was between 60 to 75% of the level in gray matter; 2) the power in both gray and white matter low frequencies decreased monotonically in similar manner with increasing levels of anesthesia; 3) the distribution of fractional anisotropy values of the functional tensors in white matter were significantly higher than those in gray matter; and 4) the functional tensor eigenvalues decreased with increasing level of anesthesia. Our results suggest that as anesthesia level changes baseline neural activity, white matter signal fluctuations behave similarly to those in gray matter, and functional tensors in white matter are affected in parallel.

Abnormal White Matter Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent Signals in Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), can cause persistent behavioral symptoms and cognitive impairment, but it is unclear if this condition is associated with detectable structural or functional brain changes. At two sites, chronic mTBI human subjects with persistent post-concussive symptoms (three months to five years after injury) and age- and education-matched healthy human control subjects underwent extensive neuropsychological and visual tracking eye movement tests. At one site, patients and controls also performed the visual tracking tasks while blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signals were measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Although neither neuropsychological nor visual tracking measures distinguished patients from controls at the level of individual subjects, abnormal BOLD signals were reliably detected in patients. The most consistent changes were localized in white matter regions: anterior internal capsule and superior longitudinal fasciculus. In contrast, BOLD signals were normal in cortical regions, such as the frontal eye field and intraparietal sulcus, that mediate oculomotor and attention functions necessary for visual tracking. The abnormal BOLD signals accurately differentiated chronic mTBI patients from healthy controls at the single-subject level, although they did not correlate with symptoms or neuropsychological performance. We conclude that subjects with persistent post-concussive symptoms can be identified years after their TBI using fMRI and an eye movement task despite showing normal structural MRI and DTI.

Does functional MRI detect activation in white matter? A review of emerging evidence, issues, and future directions

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive technique that allows for visualization of activated brain regions. Until recently, fMRI studies have focused on gray matter. There are two main reasons white matter fMRI remains controversial: (1) the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) fMRI signal depends on cerebral blood flow and volume, which are lower in white matter than gray matter and (2) fMRI signal has been associated with post-synaptic potentials (mainly localized in gray matter) as opposed to action potentials (the primary type of neural activity in white matter). Despite these observations, there is no direct evidence against measuring fMRI activation in white matter and reports of fMRI activation in white matter continue to increase. The questions underlying white matter fMRI activation are important. White matter fMRI activation has the potential to greatly expand the breadth of brain connectivity research, as well as improve the assessment and diagnosis of white matter and connectivity disorders. The current review provides an overview of the motivation to investigate white matter fMRI activation, as well as the published evidence of this phenomenon. We speculate on possible neurophysiologic bases of white matter fMRI signals, and discuss potential explanations for why reports of white matter fMRI activation are relatively scarce. We end with a discussion of future basic and clinical research directions in the study of white matter fMRI.

Functional MRI activation in white matter during the Symbol Digit Modalities Test

Background: Recent evidence shows that functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can detect activation in white matter (WM). Such advances have important implications for understanding WM dysfunction. A key step in linking neuroimaging advances to the evaluation of clinical disorders is to examine whether WM activation can be detected at the individual level during clinical tests associated with WM function. We used an adapted Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) in a 4T fMRI study of healthy adults.

Results: Results from 17 healthy individuals revealed WM activation in 88% of participants (15/17). The activation was in either the corpus callosum (anterior and/or posterior) or internal capsule (left and/or right).

Conclusions: The findings link advances in fMRI to an established clinical test of WM function. Future work should focus on evaluating patients with WM dysfunction.

Activation of auditory white matter tracts as revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging

INTRODUCTION

The ability of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to detect activation in brain white matter (WM) is controversial. In particular, studies on the functional activation of WM tracts in the central auditory system are scarce. We utilized fMRI to assess and characterize the entire auditory WM pathway under robust experimental conditions involving the acquisition of a large number of functional volumes, the application of broadband auditory stimuli of high intensity, and the use of sparse temporal sampling to avoid scanner noise effects and increase signal-to-noise ratio.

METHODS

Nineteen healthy volunteers were subjected to broadband white noise in a block paradigm; each run had four sound-on/off alternations and was repeated nine times for each subject. Sparse sampling (TR=8 s) was used.

RESULTS

In addition to traditional gray matter (GM) auditory center activation, WM activation was detected in the isthmus and midbody of the corpus callosum (CC), tapetum, auditory radiation, lateral lemniscus, and decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles. At the individual level, 13 of 19 subjects (68 %) had CC activation. Callosal WM exhibited a temporal delay of approximately 8 s in response to the stimulation compared with GM.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that direct evaluation of the entire functional network of the central auditory system may be possible using fMRI, which may aid in understanding the neurophysiological basis of the central auditory system and in developing treatment strategies for various central auditory disorders.

Does experience in talking facilitate speech repetition?

Speech is unique among highly skilled human behaviors in its ease of acquisition by virtually all individuals who have normal hearing and cognitive ability. Vocal imitation is essential for acquiring speech, and it is an important element of social communication. The extent to which age-related changes in cognitive and motor function affect the ability to imitate speech is poorly understood. We analyzed the distributions of response times (RT) for repeating real words and pseudowords during fMRI. The average RT for older and younger participants was not different. In contrast, detailed analysis of RT distributions revealed age-dependent differences that were associated with changes in the time course of the BOLD response and specific patterns of regional activation. RT-dependent activity was observed in the bilateral posterior cingulate, supplementary motor area, and corpus callosum. This approach provides unique insight into the mechanisms associated with changes in speech production with aging.

Auditory and visual interhemispheric communication in musicians and non-musicians

The corpus callosum (CC) is a brain structure composed of axon fibres linking the right and left hemispheres. Musical training is associated with larger midsagittal cross-sectional area of the CC, suggesting that interhemispheric communication may be faster in musicians. Here we compared interhemispheric transmission times (ITTs) for musicians and non-musicians. ITT was measured by comparing simple reaction times to stimuli presented to the same hemisphere that controlled a button-press response (uncrossed reaction time), or to the contralateral hemisphere (crossed reaction time). Both visual and auditory stimuli were tested. We predicted that the crossed-uncrossed difference (CUD) for musicians would be smaller than for non-musicians as a result of faster interhemispheric transfer times. We did not expect a difference in CUDs between the visual and auditory modalities for either musicians or non-musicians, as previous work indicates that interhemispheric transfer may happen through the genu of the CC, which contains motor fibres rather than sensory fibres. There were no significant differences in CUDs between musicians and non-musicians. However, auditory CUDs were significantly smaller than visual CUDs. Although this auditory-visual difference was larger in musicians than non-musicians, the interaction between modality and musical training was not significant. Therefore, although musical training does not significantly affect ITT, the crossing of auditory information between hemispheres appears to be faster than visual information, perhaps because subcortical pathways play a greater role for auditory interhemispheric transfer.

Neural encoding of acupuncture needling sensations: evidence from a FMRI study

Deqi response, a psychophysical response characterized by a spectrum of different needling sensations, is essential for Chinese acupuncture clinical efficacy. Previous neuroimaging research works have investigated the neural correlates of an overall deqi response by summating the scores of different needling sensations. However, the roles of individual sensations in brain activity and how they interact with each other remain to be clarified. In this study, we applied fMRI to investigate the neural correlates of individual components of deqi during acupuncture on the right LV3 (Taichong) acupoint. We selected a subset of deqi responses, namely, pressure, heaviness, fullness, numbness, and tingling. Using the individual components of deqi of different subjects as covariates in the analysis of percentage change of bold signal, pressure was found to be a striking sensation, contributing to most of negative activation of a limbic-paralimbic-neocortical network (LPNN). The similar or opposite neural activity in the heavily overlapping regions is found to be responding to different needling sensations, including bilateral LPNN, right orbitofrontal cortex, and bilateral posterior parietal cortex. These findings provide the neuroimaging evidence of how the individual needle sensations interact in the brain, showing that the modulatory effects of different needling sensations contribute to acupuncture modulations of LPNN network.

Spatiotemporal Segregation of Neural Response to Auditory Stimulation: An fMRI Study Using Independent Component Analysis and Frequency-Domain Analysis

Although auditory processing has been widely studied with conventional parametric methods, there have been a limited number of independent component analysis (ICA) applications in this area. The purpose of this study was to examine spatiotemporal behavior of brain networks in response to passive auditory stimulation using ICA. Continuous broadband noise was presented binaurally to 19 subjects with normal hearing. ICA was performed to segregate spatial networks, which were subsequently classified according to their temporal relation to the stimulus using power spectrum analysis. Classification of separated networks resulted in 3 stimulus-activated, 9 stimulus-deactivated, 2 stimulus-neutral (stimulus-dependent but not correlated with the stimulation timing), and 2 stimulus-unrelated (fluctuations that did not follow the stimulus cycles) components. As a result of such classification, spatiotemporal subdivisions were observed in a number of cortical structures, namely auditory, cingulate, and sensorimotor cortices, where parts of the same cortical network responded to the stimulus with different temporal patterns. The majority of the classified networks seemed to comprise subparts of the known resting-state networks (RSNs); however, they displayed different temporal behavior in response to the auditory stimulus, indicating stimulus-dependent temporal segregation of RSNs. Only one of nine deactivated networks coincided with the “classic” default-mode network, suggesting the existence of a stimulus-dependent default-mode network, different from that commonly accepted.

In vivo evaluation of the effect of stimulus distribution on FIR statistical efficiency in event-related fMRI

Technical developments in MRI have improved signal to noise, allowing use of analysis methods such as Finite impulse response (FIR) of rapid event related functional MRI (er-fMRI). FIR is one of the most informative analysis methods as it determines onset and full shape of the hemodynamic response function (HRF) without any a priori assumptions. FIR is however vulnerable to multicollinearity, which is directly related to the distribution of stimuli over time. Efficiency can be optimized by simplifying a design, and restricting stimuli distribution to specific sequences, while more design flexibility necessarily reduces efficiency. However, the actual effect of efficiency on fMRI results has never been tested in vivo. Thus, it is currently difficult to make an informed choice between protocol flexibility and statistical efficiency. The main goal of this study was to assign concrete fMRI signal to noise values to the abstract scale of FIR statistical efficiency. Ten subjects repeated a perception task with five random and m-sequence based protocol, with varying but, according to literature, acceptable levels of multicollinearity. Results indicated substantial differences in signal standard deviation, while the level was a function of multicollinearity. Experiment protocols varied up to 55.4% in standard deviation. Results confirm that quality of fMRI in an FIR analysis can significantly and substantially vary with statistical efficiency. Our in vivo measurements can be used to aid in making an informed decision between freedom in protocol design and statistical efficiency.

A semi-parametric model of the hemodynamic response for multi-subject fMRI data

A semi-parametric model for estimating hemodynamic response function (HRF) from multi-subject fMRI data is introduced within the context of the General Linear Model. The new model assumes that the HRFs for a fixed brain voxel under a given stimulus share the same unknown functional form across subjects, but differ in height, time to peak, and width. A nonparametric spline-smoothing method is developed to evaluate this common functional form, based on which subject-specific characteristics of the HRFs can be estimated. This semi-parametric model explicitly characterizes the common properties shared across subjects and is flexible in describing various brain hemodynamic activities across different regions and stimuli. In addition, the temporal differentiability of the employed spline basis enables an easy-to-compute way of evaluating latency and width differences in hemodynamic activity. The proposed method is applied to data collected as part of an ongoing study of socially mediated emotion regulation. Comparison with several existing methods is conducted through simulations and real data analysis.
