Abstract
Pertussis has several notable consequences, causing economic burden, increased strain on healthcare facilities, and reductions in quality of life. Recent years have seen a trend toward an increase in pertussis cases affecting older children and adults. To boost immunity, and protect vulnerable populations, an enduring approach to vaccination has been proposed, but gaps remain in the evidence surrounding adult vaccination that are needed to inform such a policy. Gaps include: the true incidence of pertussis and its complications in adults; regional variations in disease recognition and reporting; and incidence of severe disease, hospitalizations, and deaths in older adults. Better data on the efficacy/effectiveness of pertussis vaccination in adults, duration of protection, and factors leading to poor vaccine uptake are needed. Addressing the critical evidence gaps will help highlight important areas of unmet need and justify the importance of adult pertussis vaccination to healthcare professionals, policymakers, and payers.

Abstract
A panel of 24 international experts met in July 2022 to discuss challenges associated with pertussis detection, monitoring, and vaccination in adults; conclusions from this meeting are presented. There has been a shift in the epidemiology of pertussis toward older children and adults. This shift has been attributed to the waning of infection- or vaccine-induced immunity, newer detection techniques causing detection bias, and possibly the replacement of whole-cell pertussis with acellular vaccines in high-income countries, which may lead to immunity waning more quickly. The burden of adult pertussis is still likely under-ascertained due to widespread under-recognition by healthcare professionals (HCPs), under-diagnosis, and under-reporting in this age group. Non-standardized testing guidance and varied case definitions have contributed to under-reporting. Key barriers to HCP engagement with the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine include low awareness, lack of time/funding, and lack of motivation due to low prioritization of Tdap.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It affects people of all ages, yet evidence of the impact of pertussis in adults with underlying conditions (UCs) is scarce. This study investigated the incidence and complication rate of pertussis in adult patients with and without UC. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted using routinely collected German claims data between 2015 and 2019. Patients with and without different pneumological, cardiovascular, endocrinological, musculoskeletal, and psychological UCs were matched for incidence estimation. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk of pertussis depending on the presence of UCs. Negative binomial models were used to assess complication rates in patients with pertussis and with and without UC. RESULTS In total, 4383 patients were diagnosed with pertussis during the study period. Patients with any UC had an increased risk for pertussis compared to matched patients without UC (odds ratio [OR] 1.72; 95% confidence interval [CI]1.60-1.84, p < 0.0001). Underlying asthma had the highest risk of pertussis (OR 2.70; 95% CI 2.50-2.91, p < 0.0001), followed by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 2.35; 95% CI 2.10-2.60, p < 0.0001) and depression (OR 2.08; 95% CI 1.95-2.22, p < 0.0001). Severe complications occurred in 10.8% of the pertussis cohort (13.4% with UC vs. 9.5% without UC). The UC-attributable effect on the risk of severe pertussis-related complications was significantly increased for any UC (incidence rate ratio [IRR] 1.29, 95% CI 1.19-1.39). The severe complication risk was also increased for patients aged 60+ (IRR 1.59, 95% CI 1.46-1.72). CONCLUSION This study shows that adults with certain UCs have an increased risk for pertussis and are more likely to have complications. These results provide further evidence that pertussis is a relevant and impactful infectious disease in adults with and without certain UC, indicating that these patients need to be considered when developing vaccination recommendations to avoid pertussis and its associated complications. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, remains a significant challenge as a vaccine-preventable disease worldwide. Since the switch from the whole-cell Pertussis (wP) vaccine to the acellular Pertussis vaccine (aP), cases of whooping cough have increased in countries using the aP vaccine. Understanding the immune system's response to pertussis vaccines and infection is crucial for improving current vaccine efficacy. AREAS COVERED This review of the literature using PubMed records offers an overview of the qualitative differences in antibody and T cell responses to B. pertussis (BP) in vaccination and infection, and their potential association with decreased efficacy of the aP vaccine in preventing infection and subclinical colonization. We further discuss how asymptomatic infections and carriage are widespread among vaccinated human populations, and explore methodologies that can be employed for their detection, to better understand their impact on adaptive immune responses and identify key features necessary for protection against the disease. EXPERT OPINION An underappreciated human BP reservoir, stemming from the decreased capacity of the aP vaccine to prevent subclinical infection, offers an alternative explanation for the increased incidence of clinical disease and recurrent outbreaks.

Abstract
We developed a machine learning algorithm to identify undiagnosed pertussis episodes in adolescent and adult patients with reported acute respiratory disease (ARD) using clinician notes in an electronic healthcare record (EHR) database. Here, we utilized the algorithm to better estimate the overall pertussis incidence within the Optum Humedica clinical repository from 1 January 2007 through 31 December 2019. The incidence of diagnosed pertussis episodes was 1-5 per 100,000 annually, consistent with data registered by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the same time period. Among 18,573,496 ARD episodes assessed, 1,053,946 were identified (i.e. algorithm-identified) as likely undiagnosed pertussis episodes. Accounting for these undiagnosed pertussis episodes increased the estimated pertussis incidence by 110-fold on average (34-474 per 100,000 annually). Risk factors for pertussis episodes (diagnosed and algorithm-identified) included asthma (Odds ratio [OR] 2.14; 2.12-2.16), immunodeficiency (OR 1.85; 1.78-1.91), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 1.63; 1.61-1.65), obesity (OR 1.44; 1.43-1.45), Crohn's disease (OR 1.39; 1.33-1.45), diabetes type 1 (OR 1.21; 1.17-1.24) and type 2 (OR 1.12; 1.1-1.13). Of note, all these risk factors, except Crohn's disease, increased the likelihood of severe pertussis. In conclusion, the incidence of pertussis in the adolescent and adult population in the USA is likely substantial, but considerably under-recognized, highlighting the need for improved clinical awareness of the disease and for improved control strategies in this population. These results will help better inform public health vaccination and booster programs, particularly in those with underlying comorbidities.

Abstract
A retrospective cohort study was conducted to examine trends in the incidence and burden of pertussis among adults ≥50 years in South Korea, with/without pre-existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. The nationwide Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database was used to identify patients ≥50 years diagnosed with pertussis (2009-2018). Mean annual incidence of pertussis per 100 000 persons and overall mean incidence rate ratios (IRR) were calculated for patients with pre-existing COPD or asthma versus those with neither. Incremental healthcare costs (all-cause and pertussis-related) and healthcare utilisation (number of outpatient visits, emergency room visits, and number and length of hospitalisations) up to 12 months after, compared to 3 months before pertussis diagnosis, were also measured for each group (matched on sex, age, and Charlson Comorbidity Index). Of 1011 pertussis cases, 175 had asthma, 96 had COPD (not mutually exclusive), and 796 had neither. Overall mean pertussis incidence was 2.5, 3.4, and 0.5 for adults with pre-existing COPD, asthma, and those with neither. IRR (95% confidence interval) of pertussis for adults with pre-existing COPD and asthma was 4.9 (4.0-6.1) and 6.7 (5.7-7.9). Both COPD-pertussis and asthma-pertussis groups had higher mean incremental all-cause costs and length of hospitalisations than the general-pertussis group 3 months following pertussis diagnosis. In conclusion, individuals ≥50 years in South Korea with pre-existing COPD or asthma were at an increased risk of being diagnosed with pertussis and had higher healthcare resource utilisation than those without these conditions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pertussis, a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by Bordetella pertussis, affects people of all ages. Older adults are particularly susceptible to its severe outcomes and complications. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, the incidence rate of pertussis among individuals aged ≥ 50 years was assessed during 2009-2018 using Clinical Practice Research Datalink and Hospital Episode Statistics databases, United Kingdom. Health care resource utilisation (HCRU) and direct medical costs (DMCs) were compared between patients with a pertussis diagnosis and propensity score-matched controls (matched on demographic and clinical variables). RESULTS Among 5,222,860 individuals, 1638 had a pertussis diagnosis (incidence rate: 5.8 per 100,000 person-years; 95% confidence interval 5.5-6.0). Baseline (- 18 to - 6 months) HCRU and DMC were similar among 1480 pertussis patients and 1480 matched controls. However, there were increases in HCRU in the pertussis vs. matched cohort around the pertussis diagnosis (from months - 6 to - 1 to 5-11). The most notable increases (pertussis vs. controls) were in the rates of general practitioner (GP)/nurse visits (4.7-fold), clinical assessments (4.1-fold), and accident and emergency visits (3.0-fold) during the month before diagnosis and GP/nurse visits during the 2 months after diagnosis (2.5-fold) (all p < 0.001). DMCs were significantly higher in the pertussis cohort (p < 0.001). Total excess DMC in the pertussis cohort during months - 1 to + 11 was £318 per patient. CONCLUSION A pertussis diagnosis among adults aged ≥ 50 years resulted in significant increases in HCRU and DMC across several months around diagnosis. These results highlight the need for increased awareness of pertussis infection among adults aged ≥ 50 years and suggest that pertussis booster doses among this population should be considered.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To better understand the conditions associated with pertussis diagnosis among older adults in South Korea, a matched case-control study was conducted of individuals ≥ 50 years diagnosed with pertussis between 2009 and 2018. METHODS Pertussis cases were identified using the nationwide Health Insurance Review and Assessment service (HIRA) database. Each case was then matched to up to 10 controls identified using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) by age, sex, and geographic region at index date. In the 12 months and 30 days prior to index date, the presence of clinical characteristics previously reported to be related to pertussis and pertussis-like conditions were assessed, respectively. A conditional multivariate logistic regression model was then used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) of pertussis diagnosis, adjusted for each of the characteristics. RESULTS Pertussis cases (n = 1004) generally demonstrated a higher prevalence of comorbidities compared to controls (n = 9710). Pre-existing asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) within 12 months of index date were associated with a two-fold increased risk of pertussis with adjusted ORs (95% confidence interval) of 2.08 (1.68-2.58) and 2.32 (1.59-3.39), respectively. Gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD; 2.67 (2.23-3.19)], cancer [1.68 (1.23-2.31)], cardiovascular disease [1.62 (1.31-2.00)], renal disease [1.56 (1.12-2.16)], autoimmune disease [1.50 (1.25-1.79)], and hyperlipidemia [1.43 (1.16-1.77)] were also associated with pertussis diagnosis. Finally, acute respiratory events within 30 days prior to index date, such as pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), were highly associated with increased odds of pertussis diagnosis [adjusted ORs of 8.28 (5.10-13.44), 4.86 (3.84-6.14), and 2.90 (2.30-3.67), respectively]. CONCLUSIONS This study's findings complement and expand upon previous studies on the adult pertussis population, generating real-world data to describe underlying clinical characteristics of those diagnosed with pertussis in South Korea.

Abstract
Many countries with a high perinatal level have started a policy of vaccination of pregnant women against pertussis. To date, France has not chosen this policy. The objective was to review knowledge on pertussis mortality in infants. Compare the strategies available to protect the infant before his first vaccination, scheduled for two months of age. We proceeded to a litterature analysis, from January 1998 to 2021. Search by the following keywords used ; "Whooping cough, vaccination, pregnancy, strategy, cocooning", on the scientific basis of "Pubmed", as well as French and foreign vaccination recommendations. Currently 90% of whooping cough deaths are concerning infants under six months of age and this mortality represents 2% of mortality in the first year of life. Vaccination at birth is not effective. The cocooning strategy, which consists of vaccinating those around the child, is expensive and difficult to implement. A systematic vaccination policy for pregnant women is effective and reasonably expensive when compared to the cocooning strategy. In England, it was recently accompanied by a 78% reduction in confirmed cases of pertussis in infants under six months of age. In conclusion, compared to cocooning strategy, pertussis vaccination of pregnant women appears more effective and cost-effective, and this with each pregnancy.

Abstract
Over two decades ago acellular pertussis vaccines (aP) replaced whole cell pertussis vaccines (wP) in several countries. Since then, a resurgence in pertussis has been observed, which is hypothesized to be linked, in part, to waning immunity. To better understand why waning immunity occurs, we developed a long-term outbred CD1 mouse model to conduct the longest murine pertussis vaccine studies to date, spanning out to 532 days post primary immunization. Vaccine-induced memory results from follicular responses and germinal center formation; therefore, cell populations and cytokines involved with memory were measured alongside protection from challenge. Both aP and wP immunization elicit protection from intranasal challenge by decreasing bacterial burden in both the upper and lower airways, and by generation of pertussis specific antibody responses in mice. Responses to wP vaccination were characterized by a significant increase in T follicular helper cells in the draining lymph nodes and CXCL13 levels in sera compared to aP mice. In addition, a population of B. pertussis+ memory B cells was found to be unique to wP vaccinated mice. This population peaked post-boost, and was measurable out to day 365 post-vaccination. Anti-B. pertussis and anti-pertussis toxoid antibody secreting cells increased one day after boost and remained high at day 532. The data suggest that follicular responses, and in particular CXCL13 levels in sera, could be monitored in pre-clinical and clinical studies for the development of the next-generation pertussis vaccines.

Abstract
Purpose The impact of pertussis in individuals with asthma is not fully understood. We estimated the incidence, health care resource utilization (HCRU), and direct medical costs (DMC) of pertussis in patients with asthma. Patients and Methods In this retrospective cohort study, the incidence rate of pertussis (identified using diagnostic codes) among individuals aged ≥50 years with an asthma diagnosis was assessed during 2009–2018 using Clinical Practice Research Datalink and Hospital Episode Statistics databases. HCRU and DMC were compared – between patients with diagnoses of asthma and pertussis (asthma+/pertussis+) and propensity score-matched patients with a diagnosis of asthma without pertussis (asthma+/pertussis–) – in the months around the pertussis diagnosis (–6 to +11). Results Among 687,105 individuals, 346 had a reported pertussis event (incidence rate: 9.6/100,000 person-years of follow-up; 95% confidence interval: 8.6–10.7). HCRU and DMC were assessed among 314 asthma+/pertussis+ patients and 1256 matched asthma+/pertussis– controls. Baseline HCRU was similar in both cohorts, but increases were observed in the asthma+/pertussis+ cohort from –6 to –1 month before to 2–5 months after diagnosis. Rates of accident and emergency visits, general practitioner (GP)/nurse visits, and GP prescriptions were 4.3-, 3.1-, and 1.3-fold, respectively, in the asthma+/pertussis+ vs asthma+/pertussis– cohorts during the month before diagnosis; GP/nurse visit rates were 2.0- and 1.2-fold during 0–2 and 2–5 months after diagnosis, respectively (all p<0.001). DMC was 1.9- and 1.6-fold during the month before and 2 months from diagnosis, respectively, in the asthma+/pertussis+ vs asthma+/pertussis– cohorts (both p<0.001). During months –1 to +11, DMC in the asthma+/pertussis+ cohort was £370 higher than in the asthma+/pertussis– controls. Conclusion A pertussis diagnosis among adults aged ≥50 years with asthma resulted in significant increases in HCRU and DMC across several months around diagnosis, suggesting lengthy diagnosis times and highlighting the need for prevention strategies.

Abstract
Pertussis is a highly contagious disease of the respiratory tract caused by Bordetella pertussis. Although the burden of pertussis is highest in children, available data suggests that pertussis in the elderly and those with underlying chronic conditions or illnesses can result in significant morbidity, mortality and costs. We undertook a comprehensive review to assess the association between pertussis and chronic conditions/illnesses. A search was undertaken on 17 June 2019 across EMBASE, Medline and BIOSIS. Citations were limited to those in English, in humans and published since 1 January 1990. There were 1179 papers identified with an additional 70 identified through a review of the reference lists. Of these, 34 met the inclusion criteria. Papers included were categorised in groups, those which reported: associations between prior pertussis and subsequent chronic conditions or illnesses; a link between chronic conditions/illnesses and subsequent risk of pertussis; and those which reported on the effect of the chronic conditions/illnesses on pertussis complications or exacerbations. Pertussis appears to increase the likelihood of developing some chronic conditions/illnesses, but also appears to decrease the likelihood of developing some haematological cancers. There were several chronic conditions/illnesses where the study results were mixed, and several studies that found no association with previous pertussis. There were also studies which showed that having some comorbid health condition(s) might increase the risk of developing pertussis. Three studies showed pertussis can lead to increased exacerbations of chronic conditions/illnesses and associated hospitalisations, although one study showed it reduced the effects of chronic bronchitis. Previous pertussis appears to contribute to the increased likelihood of developing some respiratory conditions like asthma, and conversely those with asthma or COPD are at increased risk of severe pertussis requiring further intervention. Further research is required to confirm or disprove these associations, and to characterise the pathophysiological mechanisms behind the potential associations with pertussis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While pertussis is notifiable in most countries, notifications typically underestimate the true pertussis burden. We explored the incidence of pertussis in general practice in Australia. METHODS Using MedicineInsight, a large longitudinal electronic medical record database of general practice (primary care) encounters which includes >1.5 million patients, we first defined a cohort of active patients and then used free-text search algorithms to identify patients with pertussis-related encounters. We defined and identified pertussis-related encounters in four patient categories: pertussis-associated (category 1), potential pertussis (category 2), epidemiologically-linked pertussis (category 3), and symptoms consistent with pertussis (category 4). Incident pertussis-related encounter rates per 100,000 active patients were calculated from Jan 2008 to Aug 2015. RESULTS Estimated mean annual pertussis incidence increased as definitions were expanded, from 94.3 (category 1 patients only) to 148.8 (categories 1+2+3 patients combined) per 100,000 active patients per year. Monthly time-series corresponding to the first three categories were highly correlated (Pearson's r > 90% for each pair), but each was poorly correlated with category 4. For categories 1+2+3, the highest incidence was among 0-4 and 5-9 year olds. Incidence was 30% higher in females than males (i.e. 184.5 vs 139.8 per 100,00 active patients for categories 1-3 patients combined). Pertussis-associated incidence (category 1) was similar to national pertussis notification rates. Categories 2 and 3 added 25% and 33%, respectively, on average relative to category 1 incidence. The estimated incidence from categories 1+2+3 together were on average 64% higher than national pertussis notification rates. CONCLUSION We provide comprehensive estimates of pertussis-related incidence in general practice (primary care), well in excess of notified pertussis incidence in Australia. This highlights the utility of MedicineInsight data in providing a greater understanding of the burden of medically-attended pertussis infections.

Abstract
We aimed to describe the impact of pertussis on adolescents, adults, and older adults over 2007–2018 in selected Latin American countries by reviewing the literature. We searched the Medline, Embase, Scopus, LILACS, Scielo, Google Scholar, CAPES Journals Web-portal, and Cochrane databases for observational epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews of primary studies. Data were extracted and analyzed for all individuals aged ≥10 years. Of 6,891 studies identified only 25 were eligible. Studies were conducted in Brazil (14), Argentina (4), Colombia (4), Mexico (2) and Chile (1). Epidemiological data among target population were limited. No studies clearly assessed the status of asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic B. pertussis carriers in these age groups. Among all pertussis cases identified, the percentage of patients ≥10 years-old ranged between 2.1% and 66.7% depending on country and sample characteristics. The definition of cases, diagnostic methods, and age groups were not consistent across studies.

Abstract
Despite modern diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccines and high vaccine coverage, a resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough) has been observed globally. In North America and Europe, high vaccine coverage in children has led to a shift in the age-specific peak incidence of infection away from infants and towards older children and adolescents. However, much less is known about the prevalence of pertussis in older children and adults in the Middle East. A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and BIOSIS was undertaken to identify studies published between 1 January 1990 and 17 June 2019, with information on pertussis epidemiology, burden of illness, and mortality in school-aged children, adolescents, and adults in the Middle East. Studies identified for inclusion were reviewed narratively because a statistical comparison was not possible because of the mix of methodologies used. The results showed that surveillance data are weak or missing in most Middle Eastern countries, and among 24 epidemiological studies identified, most were from Iran (14), Israel (4), and Turkey (3), with single studies from the United Arab Emirates and Iraq. Despite various surveillance periods, clinical definitions, and antibody cut-off values used across the studies, the reported seroprevalence of pertussis antibodies suggested that adolescents and adults are commonly exposed to pertussis in the community and that vaccine-acquired immunity from childhood wanes. Few countries in the Middle East include a diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (Tdap) booster for adolescents on the national schedule. Israel was the only country with epidemiological data in a population that received Tdap, and the study showed that after the introduction of the adolescent booster dose, there was decrease in pertussis among children aged 5–14 years. To conclude, results from the Middle East suggest that in common with other regions, pertussis is widely circulating and that it might be shifting towards older age groups.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may increase the risk and severity of pertussis infection. Health care resource utilization (HCRU) and direct medical costs (DMC) of treating pertussis among patients with COPD are unknown. Reported incidence of pertussis among individuals aged ≥ 50 years with COPD was assessed in Clinical Practice Research Datalink and Hospital Episode Statistics databases during 2009-2018 using a retrospective cohort design. HCRU and DMC from the National Health Service perspective were compared between patients with COPD and pertussis and propensity score-matched patients with COPD without pertussis. Seventy-eight new pertussis events were identified among 387 086 patients with COPD aged ≥ 50 years (incidence rate: 4.73; 95% confidence interval 3.74-5.91 per 100 000 person-years). HCRU and DMC were assessed among 67 patients with COPD and pertussis and 267 matched controls. During the month before the pertussis diagnosis, the rates of general practitioner (GP)/nurse visits (4289 vs. 1774 per 100 patient-years) and accident and emergency visits (182 vs. 18 per 100 patient-years) were higher in the pertussis cohort; GP/nurse visits (2935 vs. 1705 per 100 patient-years) were also higher during the following 2 months (all p < 0.001). During the month before the pertussis diagnosis, annualized per-patient total DMC were £2012 higher in the pertussis cohort (£3729 vs. £1717; p < 0.001); during the following 2 months, they were £2407 higher (£5498 vs. £3091; p < 0.001). In conclusion, a pertussis episode among individuals with COPD resulted in significant increases in HCRU and DMC around the pertussis event.

Abstract
Currently, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends one-time tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination for all adults 19 years and older. This study is designed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Tdap vaccination for Tdap-eligible adults aged 19 through 85 in the United States. A cost-effectiveness model was developed to compute costs and health outcomes associated with pertussis among 100,000 Tdap-eligible persons of each age cohort. From the societal perspective, the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) saved was evaluated under the vaccination scenarios. Sensitivity analyses were also conducted to evaluate the impacts of changes in key variables. All costs were adjusted to 2018 US$ with an annual discount rate of 3% applied to costs and outcomes. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for vaccinating US adults aged 19 to 85 with Tdap ranged from $248,000/QALY to $900,000/QALY. The lowest cost per QALY was found to be $248,000 for the age 65 cohort, followed by $332,000 for the cohort of age 19, and followed by $477,000 for the age 50 cohort. Sensitivity analysis showed the most dramatic changes in ICER occurred when changing the underreporting factor, vaccine effectiveness and vaccination costs. While Tdap vaccination may not be as cost effective as predicted earlier, it remains the best available preventive measure against pertussis. Further investigation of the true burden of pertussis disease among adults and the effectiveness of Tdap vaccination in this population is needed to better estimate the impact of Tdap vaccination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the context of co-morbid illness and increasing age, data on excess morbidity from pertussis in older adults is crucial for immunisation policy but has been largely limited to case-series. METHODS We designed a matched case-control study nested within a population-based cohort of 267,153 adults aged ≥45 years in New South Wales, Australia (The 45 and Up Study cohort). Excess hospital bed days, emergency department (ED) admissions, general practitioner (GP) visits, and prescriptions were estimated using negative binomial regression models. An additional self-controlled analysis was also conducted to validate the main models, and to evaluate results for those with either asthma or a body mass index (BMI)≥30 compared to those without these risk factors. RESULTS Based on 524 pairs of PCR-confirmed pertussis cases and matched controls, we estimated an excess healthcare utilisation per case of 2.5 prescriptions (95% CI: 0.2-4.7), of which 1.1 (95% CI: 0.5-2.2) were antibiotics, 2.3 GP visits (95% CI: 2.0-2.6), and 0.1 ED admissions (95% CI: 0.1-0.2). Compared to those 45-64 years, cases ≥65 years had a significantly greater excess for all prescriptions (1.1 vs 4.7/case), antibiotic prescriptions (0.1 vs 2.2/case), and ED admissions (0.1 vs 0.2/case), but no significant excess of respiratory-related hospital bed days. An additional self-controlled analysis confirmed that cases with either asthma or BMI≥30 had higher overall healthcare utilisation but this was not associated with pertussis infection. CONCLUSION We found a substantial excess outpatient healthcare burden among adults aged 65 years and over with PCR-confirmed pertussis, supporting further evaluation of preventive measures.

Abstract
Background: Pertussis incidence has increased in recent decades despite childhood vaccination programs and high vaccination rates. To quantify the burden of pertussis, incidence, healthcare resource utilization, and costs among pertussis patients were estimated in a US managed care setting.Methods: Patients aged 0-64 years with evidence of pertussis (ICD-9-CM codes 033.0, 033.9, 484.3, ICD-10-CM codes A37.0, A37.9) and commercial insurance from 1 January 2006-12 December 2015 were identified. Incidence rates were calculated and standardized to the 2010 US Census on age, sex, and geographic region. Healthcare costs and resource utilization were compared between patients and matched comparators (health plan members without pertussis).Results: From 2006 to 2015, 11,378 pertussis cases were identified. Adjusted pertussis incidence was 15.55 cases per 100,000 person-years. Incidence was highest among infants and children; however, 59.0% of total cases were among adolescents or adults. Average adjusted healthcare costs per episode were 3.17 times higher among pertussis patients versus comparators ($5195 versus $1637, p < .001). Stratifying by age group, adjusted incremental healthcare costs per episode were $5581, $827, $700, $1429, $2530, and $4849 for patients aged <1 year, 1-6 years, 7-10 years, 11-19 years, 20-49 years, and 50-64 years, respectively.Conclusions: Managing pertussis is associated with substantial economic burden. Incidence rate estimates from this study were higher than CDC-reported rates; however, similar overall trends were observed. Although pertussis incidence has been declining since CDC-recommended vaccination for all adults in 2012, this study highlights the importance of continued management and prevention strategies, especially among adolescents and adults as they represent an important source of transmission to infants.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pertussis (whooping cough) is a vaccine-preventable disease; however, neither natural- nor vaccine-induced protection is life-long. Although generally not severe in adults, pertussis can be associated with complications in patients with chronic conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and can be readily transmitted to more vulnerable populations, including neonates before they complete their primary vaccination. Furthermore, as the global population ages, the health and economic burden of the disease is expected to rise. Areas covered: A systematic literature review was conducted to ascertain the current epidemiological and financial burden of pertussis in older adults and to discuss the potential value of a booster vaccination in this population. Expert commentary: Our review indicates a considerable underestimation of the pertussis burden amongst older adults. Seroprevalence studies consistently demonstrate that the reported incidence may be much lower than the actual incidence. Tetanus toxoid-reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccines are immunogenic in older adults, induce high booster responses and are well-tolerated. There is therefore a good rationale for the advocacy of booster pertussis vaccination throughout life to prevent pertussis infection and its transmission, especially in adults aged ≥50 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pertussis has caused several outbreaks and concern worldwide. Despite high vaccination coverage, people of all ages are still affected with significant morbidity and mortality. We aimed to analyse all pertussis hospitalizations in Portugal to help to delineate preventive policies. METHODS Data were collected from a Portuguese administrative database, which contains all registered hospitalizations in mainland Portugal. Cases were identified using the ICD-9-CM code 033.x (whooping cough) as principal or secondary diagnosis, with hospital discharges between 2000 and 2015. Data were analysed by age groups. RESULTS Of 2281 hospitalizations, 94% occurred in infants (<1 year). The mean and median ages were 20 and 2 months, respectively. A seasonal pattern was observed, with higher number of hospitalizations during the winter for infants, and during the summer for other age groups. Higher hospitalization rates were registered in the Southern regions. The mean and median lengths of hospital stay were 8 and 6 days, respectively. The main complications were acute respiratory failure and pneumonia. Invasive or non-invasive ventilation, or both, was required in 2.4, 1.8 and 0.6% of hospitalized cases, respectively. The overall inpatient case fatality rate was 0.7%; 0.8, 11.5 and 17.4% for the age groups 0-1 months, 18-64 years and ≥65 years, respectively. Total hospitalization costs were estimated to be 2,698,995€. CONCLUSION Our study emphasizes the need to adopt new preventive strategies mainly focused on infants, to reduce morbidity and costs of hospitalizations related to pertussis.

Abstract
Individuals with chronic respiratory conditions may be at increased risk for pertussis. We conducted a retrospective administrative claims analysis to examine the incidence and economic burden of diagnosed pertussis among adolescents and adults in the USA with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. Patients aged ⩾11 years with diagnosed pertussis and pre-existing COPD (n = 343) or asthma (n = 1041) were matched 1:1 to patients with diagnosed pertussis but without COPD or asthma. Differences in all-cause costs ('excess' costs) during the 45-day and 3-month and 6-month periods before and after the pertussis index date were calculated; adjusted excess costs were estimated via multivariate regressions. The incidence of diagnosed pertussis was higher among patients with COPD or asthma than among matched patients. Compared with matched patients, patients with pertussis and pre-existing COPD or asthma accrued greater all-cause adjusted costs across study periods ($3694 and $1193 more, respectively, in the 45-day period; $4173 and $1301 more in the 3-month period; and $6154 and $1639 more in the 6-month period; all P < 0·0001). Patients with pre-existing COPD or asthma experience an increased economic burden after diagnosed pertussis and may especially benefit from targeted tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccination strategies.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate transmission rates of pertussis in household contacts of cases and factors associated with transmission. A prospective epidemiological study was conducted in 2012 and 2013 to determine the incidence of pertussis among household contacts of reported cases in Catalonia and Navarre, Spain. An epidemiological survey was completed for each case and contact, who were followed for 28 days to determine the source of infection (primary case) and detect the occurrence of secondary cases. Odds ratios (ORs) were used to estimate the effectiveness of vaccination and chemoprophylaxis in preventing new cases, using the formula (1 − OR) × 100. For the 688 primary cases, a total of 2,852 contacts were recorded. The household transmission rate was 16.1% (459/2,852) and rose according to the age (> 18 years) and lack of immunisation of the primary cases, and also the age (0–18 years), family relationship (siblings and children), lack of vaccination and chemoprophylaxis of contacts. Pertussis vaccine effectiveness in preventing new cases was 65.0% (95% confidence interval (CI): 11.6 to 86.2) for full vaccination (≥ 4 doses) and 59.7% (95% CI: −6.8 to 84.8) for incomplete vaccination (< 4 doses). The effectiveness of chemoprophylaxis was 62.1% (95% CI: 40.3 to 75.9). To reduce household transmission, contacts should be investigated to detect further cases and to administer chemoprophylaxis. The current vaccination status of cases and contacts can reduce household transmission.

Abstract
We illustrate 2 cases of pneumonia associated with Bordetella pertussis infection in 72-year-old and 61-year-old patients with cancer receiving myelosuppressive therapy after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Bacterial infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer, and those receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplant, solid organ transplant, or myelosuppressive therapy are at increased risk. The infection was detected and the 2 patients had good outcomes following azithromycin treatment. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a contagious respiratory illness that has become a public health challenge due to decreased immunity of the pertussis vaccine. Therefore, it is critical to recognize pertussis early in the course of the disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite the availability of vaccines and the existence of public vaccination recommendations, outbreaks of vaccine-preventable childhood diseases still cause public health debate. The objective of this systematic review was to provide an overview of the current epidemiology and economic burden of measles, mumps, pertussis, and varicella in Germany. METHODS We systematically reviewed studies published since 2000. The literature search was conducted using PubMed and EMBASE. Also, we used German notification data to give an up-to-date overview of the epidemiology of the four diseases under consideration. RESULTS Thirty-six studies were included in our review. Results suggest that there is still considerable morbidity due to childhood diseases in Germany. Studies providing cost estimates are scarce. Comparative analyses of different data sources (notification data vs. claims data) revealed a potential underestimation of incidence estimates when using notification data. Furthermore, several studies showed regional differences in incidence of some of the diseases under consideration. CONCLUSIONS Our findings underline the need for improved vaccination and communication strategies targeting all susceptible age and risk groups on a national and local level.

The introduction of pertussis vaccination in the United States (US) in the 1940s has greatly reduced its burden. However, the incidence of pertussis is difficult to quantify, as many cases are not laboratory-confirmed or reported, particularly in adults. This study estimated pertussis incidence in a commercially insured US population aged <50 years. Data were extracted from IMS' PharMetrics Plus claims database for patients with a diagnosis of pertussis or cough illness using International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) codes, a commercial outpatient laboratory database for patients with a pertussis laboratory test, and the Centers for Disease Control influenza surveillance database. US national pertussis incidence was projected using 3 methods: (1) diagnosed pertussis, defined as a claim for pertussis (ICD-9 033.0, 033.9, 484.3) during 2008–2013; (2) based on proxy pertussis predictive logistic regression models; (3) using the fraction of cough illness (ICD-9 033.0, 033.9, 484.3, 786.2, 466.0, 466.1, 487.1) attributed to laboratory-confirmed pertussis, estimated by time series linear regression models. Method 1 gave a projected annual incidence of diagnosed pertussis of 9/100,000, which was highest in those aged <1 year. Method 2 gave an average annual projected incidence of 21/100,000. Method 3 gave an overall regression-estimated weighted annual incidence of pertussis of 649/100,000, approximately 58–93 times higher than method 1 depending on the year. These estimations, which are consistent with considerable underreporting of pertussis in people aged <50 years and provide further evidence that the majority of cases go undetected, especially with increasing age, may aid in the development of public health programs to reduce pertussis burden.

Abstract
Background Pertussis is believed to be widely underreported and under-recognized, particularly among adults. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of private practitioner-attended cough illness that could be attributed to Bordetella pertussis in adults aged ≥50 years in the US. Methods Multiple linear regressions were employed to estimate the overall incidence of pertussis. Data were extracted from IMS’ private practice database of longitudinal, patient-level claims and IMS’ commercial laboratory database during 4/1/2006–12/31/2010. Patients were ≥50 years old and had ≥1 ICD-9-CM claim for cough illness relating to pertussis, cough, or acute bronchitis. Pertussis positive laboratory tests, seasonal and secular variables were used for estimating the B. pertussis attributable fraction of cough illness. Results During the study period, there were 20.7 million cases of cough illness among people aged 50–64 and 27.5 million cases among those ≥65; of which the model attributed 2.5 and 1.7 %, respectively, to B. pertussis. The estimated incidences of cough illness attributed to B. pertussis during the study period were on average 202 and 257/100,000 among people aged 50–64 and ≥65 years, respectively, and increased over the years in both age groups. Depending on the year, estimated pertussis incidences were 42 to 105 times higher than medically attended ones in the same database. Conclusions These findings indicate that the B. pertussis disease incidence in adults aged ≥50 years is significantly higher than generally estimated. Additional research regarding pertussis reporting and diagnosis in the adult populations is needed to validate these findings.

Abstract
Although studies have described factors associated with pertussis hospitalization in children, data on adult hospitalization are sparse. We examined the association between patient characteristics and hospitalization among older adults with pertussis. We conducted a nested case-control study of participants in the 45 and Up prospective cohort in New South Wales, Australia, with an incident pertussis diagnosis during 2006-2012. Cases were defined as those with a hospitalization coded as 'whooping cough' or 'non-specific respiratory disease/cough' between a week prior and 6 weeks after the diagnosis of pertussis based on laboratory tests. Controls were participants diagnosed with pertussis but not hospitalized. Among 265,287 participants, the incidence of pertussis and pertussis hospitalization was 83.9 (95% [confidence interval] CI, 78.7-89.6) and 2.9 (95% CI, 2.1-4.1)/100,000 person-years, respectively. Among 33 cases and 882 controls, factors associated with hospitalization were increasing age (compared to those 45-54 years, adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 5.4 (95% CI, 1.6-18.2) and 8.9 (95% CI, 2.3-34.7) in those aged 65-74 years and 75+ years, respectively) and smoking (ever versus never, aOR 2.37 (95% CI, 1.11-5.06)). The risk of pertussis hospitalization is substantially higher in ≥65 years old. A booster dose of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine could be readily integrated into routine vaccination for this age group.

Abstract
Whooping cough is currently seeing resurgence in countries despite high vaccine coverage. There is considerable variation in subject-specific response to infection and vaccine efficacy, but little is known about the role of human genetics. We carried out a case–control genome-wide association study of adult or parent-reported history of whooping cough in two cohorts from the UK: the ALSPAC cohort and the 1958 British Birth Cohort (815/758 cases and 6341/4308 controls, respectively). We also imputed HLA alleles using dense SNP data in the MHC region and carried out gene-based and gene-set tests of association and estimated the amount of additive genetic variation explained by common SNPs. We observed a novel association at SNPs in the MHC class II region in both cohorts [lead SNP rs9271768 after meta-analysis, odds ratio [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] 1.47 (1.35, 1.6), P-value 1.21E − 18]. Multiple strong associations were also observed at alleles at the HLA class II loci. The majority of these associations were explained by the lead SNP rs9271768. Gene-based and gene-set tests and estimates of explainable common genetic variation could not establish the presence of additional associations in our sample. Genetic variation at the MHC class II region plays a role in susceptibility to whooping cough. These findings provide additional perspective on mechanisms of whooping cough infection and vaccine efficacy.

Abstract
Do men die young and sick, or do women live long and healthy? By trying to explain the sexual dimorphism in life expectancy, both biological and environmental aspects are presently being addressed. Besides age-related changes, both the immune and the endocrine system exhibit significant sex-specific differences. This review deals with the aging immune system and its interplay with sex steroid hormones. Together, they impact on the etiopathology of many infectious diseases, which are still the major causes of morbidity and mortality in people at old age. Among men, susceptibilities toward many infectious diseases and the corresponding mortality rates are higher. Responses to various types of vaccination are often higher among women thereby also mounting stronger humoral responses. Women appear immune-privileged. The major sex steroid hormones exhibit opposing effects on cells of both the adaptive and the innate immune system: estradiol being mainly enhancing, testosterone by and large suppressive. However, levels of sex hormones change with age. At menopause transition, dropping estradiol potentially enhances immunosenescence effects posing postmenopausal women at additional, yet specific risks. Conclusively during aging, interventions, which distinctively consider the changing level of individual hormones, shall provide potent options in maintaining optimal immune functions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular booster vaccination might be necessary throughout life to protect against pertussis infection. Nevertheless the duration of protection after booster vaccination remains unclear. In this study, antibody persistence up to 10 years after previous vaccination of adolescents (N=478) with combined reduced-antigen-content diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (dTpa, Boostrix™, GlaxoSmithKline Belgium) containing 0.5mg, 0.3mg or 0.133mg of aluminium was assessed. The immunogenicity, reactogenicity and safety of a decennial booster dTpa dose were also investigated. METHODS Young adults vaccinated as adolescents in the initial booster study were invited to participate in an assessment of antibody persistence at years 8.5 and 10, and to receive a dTpa booster dose at year 10 with immunogenicity assessment one month later. Those who originally received the 0.5mg or 0.3mg formulations received the same vaccine at year 10. Those in the 0.133mg group received the 0.5mg formulation. Reactogenicity and safety endpoints were captured until 30 days after booster vaccination. RESULTS Prior to the decennial booster at year 8.5 and year 10, all participants had seroprotective antibodies for diphtheria (ELISA or neutralisation assay) and tetanus. At least 77.8% were seropositive for anti-pertussis toxin (PT) antibodies at year 8.5 and 82.8% at year 10. All participants were seropositive for antibodies for filamentous haemagglutinin and pertactin at both time points. The decennial booster dose induced robust increases in antibody GMCs to all antigens. The post-booster anti-PT geometric mean concentration was 82.5EL.U/ml (95%CI 67.0-101.6) and 124.0 (103.5-148.5) in the 0.3mg and 0.5mg groups, respectively. The reactogenicity and safety profile of the decennial booster dose was consistent with the known safety profile of dTpa. No serious adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS Decennial booster vaccination with either of the two licensed formulations of dTpa was highly immunogenic and well tolerated in young adults. Either formulation could be confidently used as a decennial booster. This study is registered at www.clinicaltrials.govNCT01147900.

Abstract
Pertussis is a vaccine preventable respiratory infection. Young infants are at high risk of developing severe complications from infection. Despite high rates of pediatric vaccine uptake, there continues to be increases in pertussis cases, likely due to waning immunity from childhood vaccine and increased transmission through adults. Currently, pertussis booster vaccine (Tdap) is recommended for unimmunized adults and for women in the third trimester of each pregnancy; yet adult Tdap coverage remains low. Administering Tdap vaccine at non-traditional vaccination clinics and at sites where adults are accessing care for their children are effective in improving adult Tdap uptake. While most are willing to receive vaccine when recommended by their provider, lack of provider recommendation is a major obstacle to immunization. Future studies to understand barriers to provider vaccine recommendations need to be undertaken to develop interventions to improve adult Tdap vaccine uptake and reduce pertussis infection in the susceptible population.

Abstract
Pertussis continues to be an important public-health issue. The high immunization coverage rates achieved, mainly in industrialized countries, have certainly decreased the spread of the pathogen. However, as immunity wanes, adolescents and adults play an important role in the dynamics of the infection. The surveillance system has several limitations and the underestimation of pertussis in adolescents, young adults and adults is mainly related to the atypical clinical characteristics of cases and the lack of lab confirmation. The real epidemiological impact of pertussis is not always perceived. The unavailability of comprehensive data should not hamper the adoption of active prophylactic measures designed to avoid the impact of waning immunity against pertussis. Different immunization strategies have been suggested and/or already adopted such as immunization of newborns, pre-school and school children, adolescents, adults, healthcare workers, childcare workers, pregnant women, cocoon strategy. Prevention of pertussis requires an integrated approach and the adoption of different immunization strategies, with the objective of achieving and maintaining high coverage rates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increase in laboratory diagnosis of pertussis was noted in central Ohio during 2010. Diagnosis was made using a polymerase chain reaction assay targeting the multicopy insertion sequence IS481, which is found in both Bordetella pertussis (Bp) and Bordetella holmesii (Bh). An increase in specimens testing positive for Bordetella parapertussis (Bpp) using insertion sequence IS1001 was also noted. METHODS Nasopharyngeal swab specimens submitted April 1, 2010, to March 31, 2011, were tested using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay for Bp/Bh (IS481) and Bpp followed by singleplex assays for Bp and Bh. A subgroup of specimens was also cultured for Bordetella species, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on recovered organisms. Demographic and clinical features were compared for patients with Bp, Bh and Bpp. RESULTS Of 520 IS481-positive specimens, 214 (41.1%) were positive for Bp, 79 (15.2%) were positive for Bh and 5 (1.0%) were positive for both Bp and Bh; 222 (42.7%) were negative for both targets. An additional 220 specimens were positive for Bpp. Among a sample of 155 IS481-positive specimens, 40, 15 and 0 were culture positive for Bp, Bh and Bpp, respectively. Among a sample of 55 BparaIS1001-positive (Bpp) specimens, 22, 0 and 0 were culture positive for Bpp, Bp and Bh, respectively. All Bordetella species were susceptible to macrolide antibiotics. Patients with Bh were older than patients with Bp, who were older than those positive for Bpp (mean ages: 12.0, 8.0 and 4.2 years, respectively; P < 0.001). One or more classic signs of pertussis (ie, paroxysmal cough, whoop, post-tussive emesis) were seen in 55.9% of 263 patients (59 Bp, 24 Bh, 80 Bpp and 100 negative for Bordetella species), but did not differ statistically among the groups (χ = 5.1, P = 0.17). CONCLUSIONS All 3 Bordetella species, Bp, Bh and Bpp, were detected during on outbreak of pertussis-like cough illness. There were noted differences in age and seasonality, but clinical features at the time of presentation did not allow clear differentiation of these infections. All Bordetella species recovered from culture and tested were susceptible in vitro to macrolide antibiotics. Additional study is necessary to further characterize epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of Bh-associated cough illness and to determine potential co-occurrence of Bordetella species with other bacterial and viral respiratory tract pathogens.

Abstract
Pertussis is a communicable disease whose registration incidence in the Flemish region of Belgium has increased since 2003. Originally, this increment was obvious only in the province of Antwerp, but since 2012, there has also been an increase in the registered cases of pertussis in other Flemish provinces. The overall registration incidence for pertussis in Flanders was 5·6 per 100 000 in 2012. The majority of these cases were identified among young children, but older children and adults were also affected. Increased awareness, new diagnostic tools, better registration, waning immunity, and circulation of new strains were most likely associated with the increase in reporting. Although many of the pertussis infections we studied occurred within family units, several healthcare workers who had been in contact with young children were also identified as sources of pertussis. A number of these were index cases, while others were secondary infections. Finally, a fatal neonatal pertussis case is presented to illustrate the severity of the disease in young unvaccinated children.

Abstract
For a better understanding of the maintenance of immune mechanisms to Bordetella pertussis (Bp) in relation to age, we investigated the dynamic range of specific B cell responses in various age-groups at different time points after a laboratory confirmed pertussis infection. Blood samples were obtained in a Dutch cross sectional observational study from symptomatic pertussis cases. Lymphocyte subpopulations were phenotyped by flowcytometry before and after culture. Memory B (Bmem) cells were differentiated into IgG antibody secreting cells (ASC) by polyclonal stimulation and detected by an ELISPOT assay specific for pertussis antigens pertussis toxin (Ptx), filamentous haemagglutinin (FHA) and pertactin (Prn). Bp antigen specific IgG concentrations in plasma were determined using multiplex technology. The majority of subjects having experienced a clinical pertussis episode demonstrated high levels of both Bp specific IgG and Bmem cell levels within the first 6 weeks after diagnosis. Significantly lower levels were observed thereafter. Waning of cellular and humoral immunity to maintenance levels occurred within 9 months after antigen encounter. Age was found to determine the maximum but not base-line frequencies of Bmem cell populations; higher levels of Bmem cells specific for Ptx and FHA were reached in adults and (pre-) elderly compared to under-fours and schoolchildren in the first 6 weeks after Bp exposure, whereas not in later phases. This age effect was less obvious for specific IgG levels. Nonetheless, subjects' levels of specific Bmem cells and specific IgG were weakly correlated. This is the first study to show that both age and closeness to last Bp encounter impacts the size of Bp specific Bmem cell and plasma IgG levels.

Abstract
Resurgence of pertussis has been observed in several countries whereas Italy continues to be a low incidence country. We hypothesize that the low reported incidence of pertussis in Italy could be biased by the attitude of physicians to suspect and diagnose pertussis in different age groups. We investigated the attitude of Italian physicians toward pertussis diagnosis through clinical scenarios. A cross-sectional study was conducted in June 2012 sending online questionnaires to pediatricians and general practitioners (GPs) involved in ambulatory primary care. The questionnaire included five clinical scenarios of patients of different ages (45 d, 5 y, 11 y, 24 y, 58 y) with prolonged cough of at least 2 weeks. Respondents were asked to choose a diagnosis among a list of 14. We observed a decreasing trend of suspected pertussis diagnosis with increasing age of the patient (from 46% at 45 d to 0 at 58 y). In Italy pertussis is seldom suspected in the differential diagnosis of cough particularly in adults. This may cause a significant under-notification of pertussis, with a higher impact in older age groups. Educational programs should be reinforced to consider the differential diagnosis of pertussis in individuals with atypical presentation and in older age groups.
