Abstract
Honey bees are social insects that show division of labor and sexual dimorphism. Female honey bees differentiate in two different castes, queens or worker bees, while males are called drones. Worker bees have different tasks in the hive including collection of food, its processing, caring for brood, protecting the hive, or producing wax. The drones' only role is to mate with a virgin queen. Many studies have dealt with differences in physiology, behavior, and morphology of workers and drones. This is the first study that demonstrates differences in element accumulation and composition between workers and drones honey bees. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, we found that worker honey bees have higher concentrations of most elements analyzed. Drones had higher concentrations of elements essential to bees, Na, P, S, Zn, Cu, and especially Se (2.2 × higher), which is known to be important for sperm quality and fertility in many animals. Until now higher Se content was not observed in male insects. These differences can be attributed to different environmental exposure, reproductive role of drones, but mostly to the food workers and drones consume. Worker bees feed on bee bread, which is rich in minerals. Drones are fed food pre-processed by worker bees.

Abstract
Although rooster semen cryopreservation is an efficient procedure to spread qualified semen samples for reproductive goals, some post-thawed qualified semen samples resulted in poor fertility rate that could be related to epigenetic modifications during the cryopreservation process. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of reduced glutathione (GSH) in different cryopreservation extenders (Lake and Beltsville) on preservation of epigenetic modifications, fertility potential and other quality parameters of rooster sperm after thawing. Semen samples were collected and diluted in Lake and Beltsville extenders as follows: L-0: Lake without GSH, L-G: Lake with GSH, B-0: Beltsville without GSH, and B-G: Beltsville with GSH. After freeze-thawing process, sperm motility, membrane functionality, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity, viability, apoptosis status, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation, ROS concentration, epigenetic modifications and fertility potential were evaluated. In results, the type of extender had no effect (P > 0.05) of post-thawed sperm quality. The treatments containing GSH presented higher (P ≤ 0.05) total motility, progressive motility, membrane functionality, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity, viability, DNA methylation, fertility as well as lower (P ≤ 0.05) lipid peroxidation, apoptosis, DNA fragmentation and ROS concentration than other treatments. Extender supplementation with GSH had no effect (P > 0.05) on histone methylation, histone acetylation and hatching rate. In conclusion, supplementation of rooster sperm cryopreservation extender with GSH could be an effective strategy to preserve post-thawed sperm DNA methylation, fertility and other quality parameters during reproductive programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE There are considerable evidence of reproductive impairment in male organisms with Wilson disease (WD). The purpose of this study was to observe spermatogenesis, mitochondrial damage, apoptosis, and the level of oxidative stress in the testes of Wilson disease model TX mice, and to observe the effect and mechanism of glutathione on testicular spermatogenesis. METHODS Mice were divided into a normal control group (control group), Wilson disease model TX mice group (WD group), penicillamine-treated TX mice group (penicillamine group) and glutathione-treated TX mice group (glutathione group). Testicular coefficient, histomorphology of testis and epididymis, number of spermatozoa, apoptosis of spermatogenic cells and expression of apoptosis-related proteins were observed. Ultrastructural analysis of mitochondria and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) monitored using JC-1 dye were used to detect mitochondrial damage. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in testicular cells were measured to assess oxidative stress. RESULTS Testicular coefficient did not change in mice with Wilson disease. However, the tissue structure of the testicular seminiferous tubules was damaged, and the number of spermatozoa in the epididymal lumen was significantly reduced in WD group. The apoptosis rate in the testes was significantly increased. The protein expression of the pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and Caspase-3 significantly increased, and the expressions of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 significantly decreased. The levels of ROS and MDA significantly increased, and the levels of CAT and GSH significantly decreased. Mitochondria with abnormal ultrastructure and the rate of JC-1 positive cells were significantly increased in the WD group. After copper chelation by penicillamine, the structure of the testicular seminiferous tubules and the number of spermatozoa in the epididymal lumen were significantly improved. The number of apoptotic cells was significantly reduced. The levels of Bax and Caspase-3 decreased, and the expression of Bcl-2 increased. The contents of CAT and GSH increased, and the levels of ROS and MDA decreased significantly. The abnormal mitochondria and JC-1 positive cells was significantly decreased. The histomorphology of seminiferous tubules, spermatogenic function, apoptosis rate, apoptosis-related proteins, mitochondrial damage, and oxidative stress in Wilson disease TX mice significantly improved after glutathione treatment. CONCLUSION Copper deposition in Wilson disease can lead to oxidative stress injury, mitochondrial damage, and apoptosis in the testis, leading to the impairment of spermatogenesis. Glutathione may improve testicular spermatogenesis in male Wilson disease TX mice by inhibiting copper deposition-induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and apoptosis.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) is a key contributing factor in 30-80% of male infertility cases. To date, several antioxidant treatments have been put forth to manage OS-induced male infertility. This study intended to elucidate the impact of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and selenium on seminal fluid parameters and antioxidant status in infertile men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratospermia (OAT). In this prospective study, 70 patients with idiopathic OAT were randomly allocated to receive CoQ10 (200 mg/day) or selenium (200 μg/day) for 3 months. Semen quality parameters (following WHO guidelines, 5th edition), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were compared before and after the treatment. The results of the study showed an increase in sperm concentration with CoQ10 treatment (p < 0.01) as well as increased progressive sperm motility (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) and total sperm motility (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) with CoQ10 and selenium treatment respectively. There was also a significant improvement in TAC (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) and SOD (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) following treatment with CoQ10 and selenium respectively while CAT improved only with CoQ10 therapy (p < 0.05). Sperm concentration, motility, and morphology also correlated significantly with TAC, SOD, and CAT (r = 0.37-0.76). In conclusion, treatment with CoQ10 (200 mg) or selenium (200 μg) could improve sperm concentration, motility, and antioxidant status in infertile men with idiopathic OAT with CoQ10 providing the higher improvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the influence of a multi-component nutrient dietary supplement on sperm parameters and pregnancy rates in idiopathic male infertility (IMI) with oligo-, astheno-, and teratozoospermia. DESIGN A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective, parallel arms (1:1 allocation ratio), multi-center clinical trial. SETTINGS Eight urology/reproductive health clinical centers located in Ukraine. PATIENTS Eighty-three males aged 21-50 years with IMI and at least 1 of 3 abnormal values: total sperm concentration < 15 million/ml or/and spermatozoa progressive motility < 32% or/and forms with normal morphology < 4%. INTERVENTION(S) Patients were randomly allocated verum test dietary supplement (TDS) containing l-carnitine/acetyl-l-carnitine, l-arginine, glutathione, co-enzyme Q10, zinc, vitamin B9 , vitamin B12 , selenium, or placebo 1 time daily for 6 months. MAIN OUTCOME(S) The primary outcome measure was the percentage of normal spermiograms (concentration ≥ 15 million/ml and ≥ 32% of spermatozoa with progressive motility and ≥ 4% of normal forms) at month 0, 2, and 4. The percentage of pregnancies served the secondary outcome endpoint. Differences between the groups were assessed in z-test for proportions. RESULTS All males finished the study. At month 4, 29/42 (69.0%) males in the verum and 9/41 (22.0%) had normal spermiograms (P < .001). The percentage of spontaneous pregnancies in the verum group was greater than in the placebo group (10/42, 23.8% vs. 2/41, 4.9%, respectively, P = .017). There were no reportable supplement-associated adverse events. CONCLUSION Specific multi-nutrient combination l-carnitine/l-acetyl-carnitine, l-arginine, glutathione, co-enzyme-Q, zinc, folic acid, cyanocobalamin, and selenium can improve sperm quality in males with IMI and increase pregnancy rates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction and infertility are conditions with high prevalence in the general population. Nutritional factors have been reported to have an impact on sexual and reproductive health. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review is to summarize the data on nutritional factors that have influence on male and female sexual and reproductive function, including nutritional status, specific foods (e.g. dairy food), nutrients and other food components and dietary supplements. METHOD A literature search was performed using Cochrane Library, Medline and Science Direct databases without time limitations. RESULTS Obesity has a negative influence on male fertility, and weight loss improves male fertility. Food insufficiency is associated with increased sexual risk behaviours, more significant in women. Regarding macronutrients and group foods, trans-fatty acids, high glycemic index food, high carbohydrate diet and high animal protein intake prejudices fertility; omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, low glycemic index food and low carbohydrate diet, vegetable proteins and antioxidants improve fertility. Isoflavones have a negative impact on men fertility and improve sexual health of menopausal women. Whole milk improves women fertility, but men benefit from skim milk. Concerning dietary supplements, there is weak evidence sustaining efficacy, and the most promising supplements are yohimbine, vitamin B, L-arginine and vitamin D. CONCLUSION The compiled results indicate that despite the multifactorial etiology of sexual/ reproductive dysfunction, nutritional factors may affect the sexual and reproductive health in both men and women. However, it is necessary to further study to clarify this association and simultaneously improve the approach and treatment of patients with sexual and/or reproductive problems.

Abstract
Effects of oral silver acetate exposure were assessed in P generation and F generation post-natal day 26 rats. Male and female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 20 each) were exposed to silver acetate at 0.4, 4.0 or 40.0 mg/kg bw in their drinking water for 10 weeks prior to and during mating. Females were exposed to silver acetate throughout gestation and lactation. Clinical signs, body weight, feed and fluid consumption were recorded regularly. Decreased mean daily fluid consumption was observed in male and female animals during the 10 week pre mating period and during gestation in the 40 mg/kg bw dose group. Decreased fertility was observed in the 40 mg/kg bw dose group. Decreased feed consumption was observed across all dose groups and decreased mean daily fluid consumption was observed in the 4.0 mg/kg dose group during lactation. Decreased implant numbers, mean numbers of pups born/litter and numbers of live pups born/litter was observed in the 40 mg/kg bw dose group. Pup weight was reduced on lactation days 0, 4 and 7 (males) and 4, 7 and 21 (females) in the 4.0 mg/kg bw dose group and in males at lactation day 21 (40 mg/kg bw dose group). Runting was observed in males (Lactation Day; LD 4) and female (LD 4 and 7) animals in the 4.0 mg/kg bw dose group. Reduced postnatal-day 26 pup weight was observed in male pups in the 40 mg/kg bw dose group and female pups in the 4.0 mg/kg bw dose group.

Abstract
The fisheries and livestock sectors capture the highest share of protein-rich animal food and demonstrate accelerated growth as an agriculture subsidiary. Environmental pollution, climate change, as well as pathogenic invasions exert increasing stress impacts that lead the productivity momentum at a crossroads. Oxidative stress is the most common form of stress phenomenon responsible for the retardation of productivity in fisheries and livestock. Essential micronutrients play a determinant role in combating oxidative stress. Selenium, one of the essential micronutrients, appears as a potent antioxidant with reduced toxicity in its nanoscale form. In the present review, different methods of synthesis and characterization of nanoscale selenium have been discussed. The functional characterization of nano-selenium in terms of its effect on growth patterns, feed digestibility, and reproductive system has been discussed to elucidate the mechanism of action. Moreover, its anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant potentiality, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory efficacy, and fatty acid reduction in liver have been deciphered as the new phenomena of nano-selenium application. Biologically synthesized nano-selenium raises hope for pharmacologically enriched, naturally stable nanoscale selenium with high ecological viability. Hence, nano-selenium can be administered with commercial feeds for improvising stress resilience and productivity of fish and livestock.

Abstract
Vitamin E is found in high quantities in vegetable oils. Although vitamin E has multiple functions in humans and animals, its key function is protecting cells from oxidative damage. Since its discovery, several studies have demonstrated that vitamin E deficiency causes impaired fertility in humans and lab animals. However, the effects of vitamin E deficiency or of its supplementation on the fertility of farm animals, particularly on poultry, are less well studied. Therefore, a comprehensive review of the effects of dietary vitamin E on the fertility of poultry species is needed in order to understand the beneficial role of vitamin E in the maintenance of sperm and egg qualities. Based on the observations reviewed here, we found that a moderate amount of vitamin E in poultry diet significantly protects semen/sperm qualities in male birds and egg qualities in female birds via decreasing the lipid peroxidation in semen/sperms and eggs. This review provides an overall understanding of the effects of dietary vitamin E on fertility functions in poultry species.

Abstract
We analysed sodium (Na), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) levels in human semen and glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx) in seminal plasma and examined their relationships with sperm quality. Semen samples were obtained from men (n=168) undergoing routine infertility evaluation. The study design included two groups based on standard ejaculate parameters: Group I (n=39) with normal ejaculates (normozoospermia) and Group II (n=129) with a pathological spermiogram. Se concentration (but not Na or Cu) and GPx activity were significantly higher in normozoospermic males than in those with a pathological spermiogram and also in males with correct sperm motility and normal sperm morphology than in asthenozoospermic and teratozoospermic males. There were significant correlations between sperm motility, Se and GPx, between rapid progressive motility and Cu, between sperm motility and Na, between normal sperm morphology and Se and Cu and between sperm concentration and Cu and GPx. Significant correlations were found between Na and Cu, between Na and Se and between Cu and Se in human semen in relation to alcohol consumption and tobacco use. Na, Cu, Se and GPx are related to sperm characteristics and male fertility and their survey could improve male infertility diagnosis.

Abstract
The exposure to nickel chloride (NiCl₂) can cause hematotoxicity and hepatotoxicity and canaffect development. The present study pertains to the protective effect of selenium (Se) against NiCl₂-induced toxicity in preimplanted Wistar albino rats. The subcutaneous (s.c.) administration of 25 or 50 mg/kg of NiCl₂ to Wistar albino rats on day 3 of gestation induced an immediate and significant decrease in maternal body weight and anemia 2 days after treatment. In addition, an increase in plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was observed. These effects were maintained on day 20 of gestation. Moreover, a significant increase in plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels was observed with the administration of 25 mg/kg of NiCl₂. Conversely, administration of 50 mg/kg of NiCl₂ by s.c. injection increased erythropoiesis at day 20 of gestation and decreased platelets counts. In addition, administration of 100 mg/kg of NiCl₂ markedly reduced the maternal body weight and number of live fetuses and increased fetal loss, predominantly at the end of the experimental period. All dose levels of NiCl₂ caused an alteration in the hepatic histoarchitecture. When 0.3-mg/kg Se was injected s.c. with 100-mg/kg NiCl₂, the levels of plasma AST and ALT and the structure of the liver were restored. Administration of 20 mg/L/day of NiCl₂ in the drinking water significantly reduced the maternal body weight at day five of gestation as well as erythropoiesis during the exposure period. The present study suggests that Se can counteract the nocuous effect of nickel on the liver; however this antioxidant did not prevent alterations in development and erythropoiesis.

Abstract
The occurrence of a high incidence of sperm tail defects in a male domestic cat resembling the known 'Dag-like' defect is reported. Sperm analyses were performed in ejaculated samples collected by an artificial vagina and in testicular and epididymal sperm cells after castration. The following alterations were observed using transmission electron microscope: heavily coiled sperm tails containing several axonemal units enclosed in the same common cell membrane; aberrations in the axonemal main structure; and swollen and unevenly distributed mitochondria in the midpiece. Abnormal modifications in the mitochondrial sheath were also found in sperm cells retrieved from testes and epididymides. Considering these findings, we can conclude that this is the Dag-like defect, described previously in other domestic species and a testicular origin may be involved.

Abstract
A total of 75 male mice were allotted to five groups of 15 each in a completely randomized experimental design to study the effects of probiotics, inorganic selenium, and selenium-enriched probiotics on male fertility in hyperlipidemic status. The mice in group 1 were fed a normal basal diet and served as negative control. The mice in group 2 were fed a high fat diet and served as positive control. The mice in groups 3, 4, and 5 were fed the high fat diet supplemented with probiotics, inorganic selenium, and selenium-enriched probiotics, respectively. The high fat diet was composed of 15% lard, 1% cholesterol, 0.3% cholic acid, and 83.7% basal diet. Over 90% of the selenium in the selenium-enriched probiotics was present in forms of organic selenium. After the mice were fed these diets for 75 days, serumal total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, and testosterone levels, plus sperm index (count, motility and abnormalities), penis length, and weight and histopathology of testes were measured. The results showed that in the mice fed the high fat diet were significant (P < 0.01) elevations of serumal total cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein, and decreases of high density lipoprotein. The high fat diet caused a decline in serumal testosterone level, reduced semen quality, and atrophy and degeneration of seminiferous tubules. No effects on penis length or relative weight of testis were observed. Supplementation of probiotics, inorganic selenium, or selenium-enriched probiotics to the high fat diet significantly alleviated (P < 0.05) the adverse effects of hyperlipidemia by reducing testicular tissue injury, increasing serumal testosterone level, and improving sperm indexes. It was concluded that hyperlipidemia had significant adverse effects on male fertility, which could be ameliorated at various degrees by feeding the diets supplemented with probiotics, inorganic selenium, or selenium-enriched probiotics. Selenium-enriched probiotics or inorganic selenium supplementation gave better results than probiotics supplementation and may be used to improve animal and human male fertility compromised by hyperlipidemia or obesity.

Abstract
High rates of hepatitis B and C are present in Pakistan. Epidemiological surveys demonstrated an inverse association between selenium (Se) level and regional cancer incidence, as well as viral infection. In this cross-sectional descriptive analytical study, serum selenium concentration of 150 patients suffering from hepatitis B and C patients, along with 26 healthy controls, was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with hydride generation system. The mean and standard deviation of serum selenium concentration observed in male and female patients with hepatitis C were 101.60 ± 0.55 and 77.43 ± 0.47 μg/l, respectively, while the mean and standard deviation of serum selenium concentration observed in male and female patients with hepatitis B was 107.58 ± 0.44 and 137.8 ± 0.36 μg/l. Analysis of t test showed significant difference between hepatitis C and B (P < 0.001) patients in serum selenium concentration when compared with control.

Abstract
Oxidative stress contributes to defective spermatogenesis leading to male factor infertility. The aim of this study was to review the current literature on the effects of various antioxidants to improve fertilisation and pregnancy rates. The sources of literature were Pubmed and the Cochrane data base. Reviewing the current literature revealed that Carnitines and vitamin C and E have been clearly shown to be effective by many well-conducted studies and may be considered as a first line treatment. The efficacy of antioxidants, such as glutathione, selenium and coenzyme Q10 has been demonstrated by few, but well-performed studies, and may be considered second line treatment. There is, however, a need for further investigation with randomised controlled studies to confirm the efficacy and safety of antioxidant supplementation in the medical treatment of idiopathic male infertility as well as the need to determine the ideal dose of each compound to improve semen parameters, fertilisation rates and pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
The effects of Se supplementation and its organic or inorganic form on semen quantitative parameters (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, and total number of sperm) and biochemical parameters of seminal plasma (protein concentration, acid phosphatase activity, superoxide dismutase activity, and total antioxidant capacity) were investigated over a 25-wk reproductive season. Additionally, DNA fragmentation and motility characteristics of turkey spermatozoa were measured. The parameters of turkey semen in relation to yellow semen syndrome were also determined. Twenty-four males (Big 6) were divided into 3 experimental groups differing in form of Se supplementation (no Se supplementation, 0.3 mg/kg of inorganic Se from sodium selenite and 0.3 mg/kg of organic Se from Sel-Plex, Alltech Inc., Nicholasville, KY). Dietary Se supplementation enhanced the sperm concentration and total number of sperm and did not influence the antioxidative properties of turkey seminal plasma and most biochemical parameters. Only seminal plasma acid phosphatase activity was increased in turkeys fed inorganic Se. The main sperm DNA fragmentation parameters were not affected by dietary Se. The highest percentage of motile spermatozoa (85%) was recorded for the semen of turkeys fed organic Se. Values of the biochemical parameters (acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity) of seminal plasma increased during the reproductive season. Yellow semen was characterized by increased biochemical parameters and decreased spermatozoa motility characteristics. However, the percentage of motile spermatozoa did not differ between white and yellow semen. Organic Se seemed to be the preferred form of diet supplementation in comparison with inorganic Se. Biochemical parameters of semen and spermatozoa motility parameters appear to be useful for evaluating the effect of age on semen quality. Monitoring the DNA fragmentation of spermatozoa at the end of the reproductive season could be a useful tool for monitoring turkey semen quality. Increased superoxide dismutase activity can be used as an indicator of yellow semen. A decline in the quality of yellow semen can be related to a decrease in the spermatozoa motility parameters of turkeys.

Abstract
1. The objective was to examine the effect of supplemental dietary organic selenium (Se) on improving semen quality and antioxidative status in male domestic fowls exposed to high ambient temperature. 2. Thirty-six Egyptian local cross males, 42 weeks old, were housed individually in cages in an open-sided building under 16 h L:8 h D and were provided with commercial feed and water ad libitum. In the house average daily temperature ranged from 33 to 36 degrees C and relative humidity from 60 to 70%. Birds were divided into 4 experimental treatments (n = 9) and were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 01, 02 or 03 mg organic Se/kg in the form of a yeast source (Sel-Plex) for 8 weeks. 3. Under heat stress conditions, inclusion of organic Se in the cockerel diets enhanced the semen quality traits, including the sperm count and motility and reduced the percentage of dead sperms in a dose-dependent manner. 4. In seminal plasma, organic Se supplementation ameliorated some of the adverse effects of heat stress on lipid peroxidation and antioxidative properties. The inclusion of organic Se (03 mg/kg) in the cockerel diets doubled seminal plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, compared to controls and reduced lipid peroxidation. 5. In conclusion, supplemental dietary organic Se improved semen quality characteristics when cockerels were subjected to heat stress. It increased both sperm count and motility, reduced the percentage of dead sperm and enhanced the antioxidative status of seminal plasma.

Abstract
PURPOSE We explored the efficacy of selenium and/or or N-acetyl-cysteine for improving semen parameters in infertile men, and the associations among semen quality and the concentrations of selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine in seminal plasma. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 468 infertile men with idiopathic oligo-asthenoteratospermia who were randomized to receive 200 microg selenium orally daily (selenium group of 116), 600 mg N-acetyl-cysteine orally daily (N-acetyl-cysteine group of 118), 200 microg selenium plus 600 mg N-acetyl-cysteine orally daily (selenium plus N-acetyl-cysteine group of 116) or similar regimen of placebo (control group of 118) for 26 weeks, followed by a 30-week treatment-free period. These patients provided blood samples for the measurement of serum testosterone, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, inhibin B, selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine. Semen samples were also obtained for routine semen analysis, and the measurement of seminal plasma selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine. RESULTS In response to selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine treatment serum follicle-stimulating hormone decreased but serum testosterone and inhibin B increased. All semen parameters significantly improved with selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine treatment. Administering selenium plus N-acetyl-cysteine resulted in additive beneficial effects. A significant positive correlation existed between the seminal plasma concentrations of selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine, and semen parameters. A strong correlation was observed between the sum of the selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine concentrations, and mean sperm concentration (r = 0.67, p = 0.01), sperm motility (r = 0.64, p = 0.01) and percent normal morphology (r = 0.66, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that supplemental selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine improve semen quality. We advocate their use for male infertility treatment.

Abstract
What makes selenoenzymes--seen from a chemist's view--so special that they cannot be substituted by just more analogous or adapted sulfur proteins? This review compiles and compares physicochemical properties of selenium and sulfur, synthetic routes to selenocysteine (Sec) and its peptides, and comparative studies of relevant thiols and selenols and their (mixed) dichalcogens, required to understand the special role of selenium in selenoproteins on the atomic molecular level. The biochemically most relevant differences are the higher polarizability of Se- and the lower pKa of SeH. The latter has a strikingly different pH-dependence than thiols, with selenols being active at much lower pH. Finally, selected typical enzymatic mechanisms which involve selenocysteine are critically discussed, also in view of the authors' own results.

Abstract
There are now concerns that dietary Se intake is inadequate for the population in the UK and parts of Europe. Many different methods can be proposed to deal with this problem. Experience from Finland suggests that the addition of Se to fertiliser is a safe and effective means of increasing the intake of the micronutrient in the human population. However, careful consideration needs to be given to the potential consequences of increasing Se intake. It is important to understand the biochemical and physiological changes that may occur with any increase in Se intake within the UK population. Se is an essential component of at least twenty functional proteins within mammals. These proteins are essential for a range of metabolic functions, including antioxidant activity, thyroid hormone synthesis and immune function. Thus, any increase in Se intake has the potential to influence in a wide range of factors that may impinge on the incidence of chronic disease. Treatment of soil with Se-supplemented fertiliser will certainly increase total Se in food products derived from areas where this treatment is in place. Consumption of such foods will increase Se status in many populations where the existing intake does not meet requirements. If the increases in Se intake are not toxic the overall consequences have the potential to be beneficial.

Abstract
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can interfere with hormone activities and are suspected as endocrine disrupters involved in disorders, e.g. reproductive disorders. We investigated the possible relation between the actual integrated serum xenoestrogenic, xenoandrogenic and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activities, and the sperm DNA damage and sperm apoptotic markers of 262 adult males (54 Inuits from Greenland, 69 from Warsaw (Poland), 81 from Sweden, and 58 from Kharkiv (Ukraine)) exposed to different levels of POPs. Xenobiotic-induced receptor activities were determined by receptor-mediated luciferase reporter gene expression. Sperm DNA damage was measured using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-driven dUTP nick labeling assay (TUNEL) and pro- (Fas) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl-xL) markers were determined by immune methods. Different features of xenobiotic-induced receptor activity in serum and sperm DNA fragmentation and apoptotic markers existed between the Inuits and the European Caucasians. Negative correlations between xenobiotic-induced receptor activities and DNA damage were found for Inuits having relatively lower xenoestrogenic, lower dioxin-like activity, and lower sperm DNA damage, but higher xenoandrogenic activity. In contrast, in the European groups, xenobiotic-induced receptor activities were found to be positively correlated with the DNA damage. Further research must elucidate whether altered receptor activities in concerted action with genetic and/or nutrient factors may have protecting effect on sperm DNA damage of the Inuit population.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the toxicity of diphenyl diselenide [(PhSe)2] exposure on the progeny of Wistar male rats. Male rats were exposed to (PhSe)2 subcutaneously for 4 weeks at the dose of 5.0 mg/kg and 8 weeks at the dose of 2.5 mg/kg, prior to mating with unexposed females. No lethality was noted in any group. At term of exposure period, 4-week exposed male rats presented significant decrease in the body weight. Sex organ weights were similar in (PhSe)2-exposed and control male groups. The number of implantation sites in females mated with males exposed to (PhSe)2 for 8 weeks was significantly higher than those of the respective control group. Male exposure to (PhSe)2, administered for 4 and 8 weeks, did not change fetal body weight. Gross examination of fetuses from 4- to 8-week exposed groups did not reveal the appearance of external anomalies. Examination of live fetuses for ossification centers did not show significantly difference between groups. No increase in the incidence of skeletal anomalies was observed in fetuses obtained from females impregnated with (PhSe)2-exposed males. The current study indicated that (PhSe)2 given sub-chronically (4 or 8 weeks) to male rats had no adverse effects on their progeny.

Abstract
Objective To investigate whether daily diet provides adequate selenium intake in healthy men and women living in Tehran, Iran. Method Serum level of selenium was determined in 184 healthy individuals of both genders. The samples were divided into two age groups, adults and children, for analysis. The serum level of selenium was determined using hydride generation and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results The mean and standard deviation of serum selenium levels in children (1–16 years) was 84.3 ± 11 μg/l and there was no significant difference between genders in this group. In adults (older than 16 years) the mean serum selenium level was 100.6 ± 13 SD μg/l; among women the mean was 93.9 ± 14 SD μg/l and among men it was 102.2 ± 12 SD μg/l. The mean selenium level in men was higher than in women and data analysis showed a significant difference between them (p < 0.005). There was also a positive correlation between higher selenium serum concentration and age in men (P < 0.001). Daily intake of selenium in men and women was calculated to be 67 μg and 62.1 μg respectively. Conclusion Our results show that the serum concentration of selenium in an Iranian population is similar to other nationalities in the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POP), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p, p'-DDE), are widely found in the environment and considered potential endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDC). Their impact on male fertility is still unknown. METHODS To explore the hypothesis that POP is associated with altered sperm chromatin integrity, a cross-sectional study involving 707 adult males (193 Inuits from Greenland, 178 Swedish fishermen, 141 men from Warsaw, Poland, and 195 men from Kharkiv, Ukraine) was carried out. Serum levels of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153), as a proxy of the total PCB burden, and of p,p'-DDE were determined. Sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) was used to assess sperm DNA/chromatin integrity. RESULTS We found a strong and monotonically increasing DNA fragmentation index with increasing serum levels of CB-153 among European but not Inuit men, reaching a 60% higher average level in the highest exposure group. No significant associations were found between SCSA-derived parameters and p, p'-DDE serum concentrations. CONCLUSION These results suggest that human dietary PCB exposure might have a negative impact on the sperm chromatin integrity of adult males but additional issues, including differences in the genetic background and lifestyle habits, still need to be elucidated.

Abstract
Controlled oxidation, such as disulfide bond formation in sperm nuclei and during ovulation, plays a fundamental role in mammalian reproduction. Excess oxidation, however, causes oxidative stress, resulting in the dysfunction of the reproductive process. Antioxidation reactions that reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species are of prime importance in reproductive systems in maintaining the quality of gametes and support reproduction. While anti-oxidative enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and peroxidase, play a central role in eliminating oxidative stress, reduction-oxidation (redox) systems, comprised of mainly glutathione and thioredoxin, function to reduce the levels of oxidized molecules. Aldo-keto reductase, using NADPH as an electron donor, detoxifies carbonyl compounds resulting from the oxidation of lipids and proteins. Thus, many antioxidative and redox enzyme genes are expressed and aggressively protect gametes and embryos in reproductive systems.

Abstract
This study was performed to determine the relationship between selenium (Se) content and Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in blood and semen, and semen quality of boars at different age used in an artificial insemination (AI) station. Routine macroscopic and microscopic analyses of semen quality were accompanied by measurement of Se content and GSH-Px activity in blood and semen. The Se concentration in blood plasma, seminal fluid and spermatozoa was measured by fluorometric method, the GSH-Px activity by a method based on NADPH-coupled reaction. A total of 155 ejaculates and 58 blood samples were investigated. The results of this study showed that there was no direct relationship between the Se content and GSH-Px activity in blood plasma and semen, and semen quality of sexual matured boars. The mechanisms controlling Se content and GSH-Px activity in blood and semen seem to be independent. The age of boars as a differentiating factor for Se content and GSH-Px activity in blood and semen is possible. It is concluded that a determination of Se status and/or GSH-Px activity in organism before Se supplementation is indicated.

Abstract
This study was designed to explore the protective effects of selenium on submandibular glands of rats that were maintained on liquid diet. The animals kept on liquid diet for 10 days following 20 days of solid diet, had severe degeneration on both acinar and ductal cells: pycnotic nuclei, enlarged granular endoplasmic reticulum, swollen mitochondria with separated cristae, reduction of secretory granules and abundant lipid droplets were observed. Body and gland weights of these animals were found to decrease significantly compared to those of control group given solid diet for 30 days. The animals that were fed 20 days with solid diet + 10 days liquid diet and also given selenium 0.4 mg/kg for 30 days, did not have any remarkable sign of degeneration on submandibular glands, and their gland weights significantly increased when compared to the animals fed with liquid diet without selenium supplementation. Submandibular glands of the group that was maintained on solid diet for 30 days and supplemented with selenium in drinking water were found to be normal. They showed consistent gain in both body and gland weights almost equal to that of control group. As a result, we assume that adding selenium in liquid diet can prevent the detrimental effects of liquid diet consumption on submandibular glands.

Abstract
One hundred and eighty-five samples of feeds (hays, green plants, and concentrate feed) from households covering 41 localities in Dobrudja, a southeast region of Romania, were collected and analyzed for selenium (Se) content by spectrofluorometry with 2,3-diaminonaphthalene. Only 6.5% of the samples analyzed were, in terms of the feed Se content, considered appropriate (i.e., 0.15-0.30 ppm), within the normal range. The remaining 93.5% proved to be Se deficient; the results fell into the 0.001-0.150 ppm range. Consequently, the samples were divided into three deficiency groups based on the content recorded as follows: severe for 3.2% (Se below 0.01 ppm), critical for 84.9% (Se in the 0.01-0.1 ppm range), and marginal for 5.4% (Se in the 0.1-0.15 ppm range). Conclusively, the Dobrudja feeds may be said to be generally Se deficient, which requires prophylactic and therapeutic measures to correct animal selenium deficiency.

Abstract
Deficiency of selenium and vitamin E has recently been identified as a major health concern of sheep producers in certain regions of the United States, and familiarity with published data on these nutrients seems to be of value to small ruminant practitioners. This article begins with a description of the biochemical roles and metabolism of selenium and vitamin E. A literature review follows in which the influence of these nutrients on the musculoskeletal, reproductive, and immune systems, as well as on flock productivity, is discussed. Methods for detection of deficiency and supplementation strategies are also described.

Abstract
Reduction in fertility is well known to be possibly related to selenium deficiencies, even if target organ for selenium action is, at present, unclear. The present study was aimed to examine whether selenium directly influences granulosa cells. Bovine granulosa cells from different size follicles were used to investigate the effect of selenium (5 ng/ml), with or without bovine follicle-stimulating hormone (bFSH) (100 ng/ml), on proliferation and steroidogenesis. In addition, we sought to determine if selenium modulates the production of nitric oxide, which is known to play an important role in ovarian activity. Our data demonstrate that selenium significantly (P < 0.001) stimulates the proliferation of the cells from small follicles; moreover, it further potentiates the stimulatory effect of the gonadotropin in the same cells. Furthermore, selenium significantly (P < 0.01) augments E2 output by cells from both kinds of follicles. bFSH increases E2 production (P < 0.01) by cells from large follicles, whereas it exerts a stimulatory (P < 0.01) effect only in the presence of selenium in the cells from the small ones. The production of nitric oxide is significantly increased (P < 0.001) by bFSH, but only in cells from small follicles. Selenium inhibits (P < 0.001) nitric oxide production in cells from both kinds of follicles and significantly decreases (P < 0.001) bFSH-induced nitric oxide production in cells from the small ones. We conclude that selenium acts on granulosa cells by modulating their proliferation and E2 synthesis; moreover, its effect could be mediated, at least in part, through an inhibition of nitric oxide.

To date, the major functions of selenium can be attributed to its antioxidative properties and its role in the regulation of thyroid hormone metabolism, cell growth and eicosanoid biosynthesis. The unusual feature of selenoprotein synthesis is that selenocysteine insertion is specified by the stop UGA codon. A number of selenocysteine-specific gene products and a stem-loop structure in the 3' untranslated region are required for selenocysteine biosynthesis and the decoding of UGA codons in the open reading frame of the mRNA. The major biological functions of selenium are achieved through its redox activity when present as selenocysteine at the active sites of selenoproteins and these proteins are selenium-dependent since replacement with the sulphur analogue cysteine causes loss of enzyme activity. Both organic and inorganic forms of selenium may be utilised by the body, with the selenoamino acids showing greatest bioavailability. Knowledge of the biochemistry of the element coupled with appropriate techniques for the study of the distribution of selenium species in health and disease could help to identify sensitive markers of selenium status.

Abstract
Nickel (10-100 ppm added as NiCl2) was studied to determine its effects on reproduction of Wistar rats. In nine experimental groups, females, males or both were exposed to nickel in drinking water. In one female group and one male group, the drinking water was also supplemented with 0.3 ppm selenium (added as Na2SeO3). Breeding success and the growth and viability of pups were recorded. Nickel, copper and zinc concentrations in kidneys, liver and skin (with fur) of the females, males and pups were determined with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. In addition, histology of the male testes (from control and nickel-exposed groups) was studied. The female exposures started 14, 28 or 100 days before copulation and continued during pregnancy and lactation. When the males were exposed (for 28 or 42 days before copulation), NiCl2 reduced both the number of pregnancies and the number of pups born. In the testes, NiCl2 induced shrinkage of the seminiferous tubules, which seemed to close some of the tubules. In the tubules, NiCl2 decreased the number of basal spermatogonia. When the females or both parents were exposed to NiCl2, pup mortality during lactation was high. However, when the females were drinking NiCl2 supplemented with selenium, all the pups survived and development of the total mass of the litters was even better than in the control group. In the same way, in males, selenium supplementation of the drinking water protected those pups that were born; but fertility was lower than with the control treatment. In the tissues studied, nickel accumulated most in the kidneys and then in the liver and skin. In each type of organ, there was a clear dose response relationship. In the pups, in particular, selenium (given to the females) increased the amount of nickel in tissues compared with corresponding administration of nickel without selenium. In summary, selenium seemed to counteract the deleterious effects of NiCl2 on the reproduction of rats.

Abstract
SELENIUM AVAILABILITY: Selenium deficiency has been an important source of loss to the pastoral industries of New Zealand. About 30% of farmed land in New Zealand is considered to be selenium-deficient and continued development of soils and pasture will tend to further decrease the concentration of selenium in pasture. BIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS Formerly it was believed that all biological functions of selenium in animals could be attributed to the antioxidant activity of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. More recently, it has been shown that selenoproteins have roles in immune function and thyroid hormone metabolism. RESPONSES TO SUPPLEMENTATION Following supplementation of ruminants grazing pastures deficient in selenium, milk production and growth responses are likely to occur in cattle, while in sheep improvements in growth and fertility are most likely. Reproductive dysfunction may not be as important as previously thought in cattle grazing pasture moderately deficient in selenium. The relationship between selenium intake and disease resistance deserves further study. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Management of selenium deficiency will continue to be important in grazing ruminants. Veterinarians should be aware that many selenoenzymes exist, some with functions quite distinct from the antioxidant role of glutathione peroxidase.
