Recent advances in synthetic methods and applications of silver nanostructures

Construction of nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities and their applications in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy

Plasmonic nanocavities exhibit exceptional capabilities in visualizing the internal structure of a single molecule at sub-nanometer resolution. Among these, an easily manufacturable nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavity is a successful and powerful platform for demonstrating various optical phenomena. Exciting advances in surface-enhanced spectroscopy using NPoM nanocavities have been developed and explored, including enhanced Raman, fluorescence, phosphorescence, upconversion, etc. This perspective emphasizes the construction of NPoM nanocavities and their applications in achieving higher enhancement capabilities or spatial resolution in dark-field scattering spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. We describe a systematic framework that elucidates how to meet the requirements for studying light-matter interactions through the creation of well-designed NPoM nanocavities. Additionally, it provides an outlook on the challenges, future development directions, and practical applications in the field of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

EVQ-218: Characterization of High-Energy Nanoparticles that Measure up to NIST Standards

EVQ-218 is a high-energy produced nanoparticle (NP) with a method of manufacture that avoids chemical or biological synthesis. The patented single-step process generates stable, pure metal NPs directly into HPLC grade water. Laser ablation via the multiple cross laser system occurs at a rate that is in the region of dielectric breakdown, generating temperatures and pressures akin to those of diamond formation. The spherical particles from this method have an ultrastable shell structure that inhibits the hallmark ion emission that occurs in other nanosilver species. The resulting particle size distribution is so narrow that additional size refinement or stabilizing chemistries are not necessary. These properties make EVQ-218 an attractive clean and green alternative to traditional nanosilvers, particularly when factoring in shelf life, as EVQ-218 maintains (uniform) stability for years, while NIST standard materials degrade within a few weeks. EVQ-218 characterization and differentiation are timely as the rise of antimicrobial resistance has caused a surge of research on antimicrobial silver NPs. It has been widely established that the antimicrobial activity of nanosilver is due to ion emission. Unfortunately, metal ions can be quite toxic and prevent certain biomedical and consumer product applications. In an ever-changing regulatory landscape, there is increasing scrutiny to definitively characterize nanomaterials and assess their potential environmental/toxicological footprint. EVQ-218 was characterized alongside comparable NIST standard NPs, with particular interest in speciation and fate. Particle characterization studies reveal that EVQ-218 is nearly equivalent to NIST standard material with respect to particle morphology and uniformity. Dissolution and surface chemistry studies quickly differentiate EVQ-218 as the first stable, nonemissive, pure metal NP that is on par with NIST standards for ideal materials.

Breaking boundaries: Artificial intelligence for pesticide detection and eco-friendly degradation

Pesticides are extensively used agrochemicals across the world to control pest populations. However, irrational application of pesticides leads to contamination of various components of the environment, like air, soil, water, and vegetation, all of which build up significant levels of pesticide residues. Further, these environmental contaminants fuel objectionable human toxicity and impose a greater risk to the ecosystem. Therefore, search of methodologies having potential to detect and degrade pesticides in different environmental media is currently receiving profound global attention. Beyond the conventional approaches, Artificial Intelligence (AI) coupled with machine learning and artificial neural networks are rapidly growing branches of science that enable quick data analysis and precise detection of pesticides in various environmental components. Interestingly, nanoparticle (NP)-mediated detection and degradation of pesticides could be linked to AI algorithms to achieve superior performance. NP-based sensors stand out for their operational simplicity as well as their high sensitivity and low detection limits when compared to conventional, time-consuming spectrophotometric assays. NPs coated with fluorophores or conjugated with antibody or enzyme-anchored sensors can be used through Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectrometry, fluorescence, or chemiluminescence methodologies for selective and more precise detection of pesticides. Moreover, NPs assist in the photocatalytic breakdown of various organic and inorganic pesticides. Here, AI models are ideal means to identify, classify, characterize, and even predict the data of pesticides obtained through NP sensors. The present study aims to discuss the environmental contamination and negative impacts of pesticides on the ecosystem. The article also elaborates the AI and NP-assisted approaches for detecting and degrading a wide range of pesticide residues in various environmental and agrecultural sources including fruits and vegetables. Finally, the prevailing limitations and future goals of AI-NP-assisted techniques have also been dissected.

Green Fabrication of silver nanoparticles by leaf extract of Byttneria Herbacea Roxb and their promising therapeutic applications and its interesting insightful observations in oral cancer

The present research was carried out to look into therapeutic insight of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by leaf extract of Byttneria herbacea Roxb (BH). The analysis of biosynthesized BH-AgNPs by UV-visible spectroscopy shows an intense surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 422 nm initially and 437 nm after 30 min which certainly reveals the formation of BH-AgNPs. Fourier Infra-red Spectroscopy (FT-IR) reveals that BH-AgNPs are biosynthesized by using different bioactive compounds like O-H stretch of free hydroxyl alcohol and phenols, N-H bond of primary amines present in the leaf extract. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed that BH-AgNPs are almost spherical in nature with an average size range from of 2 nm to 12 nm. The particle size analysis by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) reveals that the BH-AgNPs are poly-dispersed in nature with an average size of 8 nm ± 2 nm, with a negative zeta potential value of -21 mV which reveals the biosynthesized BH-AgNPs are very stable. The BH-AgNPs (Byttneria herbacea -AgNPs) revealed excellent free radical scavenging activity and exceptional antimicrobial activity. The anti-proliferative and cytotoxic studies in KB oral cancer cells revealed biosynthesized BH-AgNPs can employ as future novel therapeutic agents in cancer treatment and other biomedical applications.

In vivo efficacy of silver nanoparticles against Syphacia muris infected laboratory Wistar rats

Helminth infections are a worldwide problem that affects both humans and animals in developing countries. The common pinworm Syphacia muris frequently infects lab rats and can obstruct the creation of unrelated biological experiments. The objective of this study was to examine the in vivo efficacy of silver nanoparticles against S. muris infected Wistar rats. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction examinations of silver nanoparticles revealed highly pure polycrystals with a mean size of 4 nm. Rats were divided into group I, the control: received distilled water; groups II and III, the treated: received 2, 4 mg/kg b.w. of Ag NPs, respectively. At the end of the experimental period, all rats were euthanized and dissected for collecting worms. The surface topography of the recovered worms was displayed using light and scanning electron microscopy, and their physiological status was determined using oxidative stress biomarkers. The histological changes in the rat liver, kidney, and spleen were also examined. In the current study, Ag NPs administration revealed substantial alterations in worms collected from treated rats, including shrinkage of lips, peeling and rupture of body cuticles, and disruption of surface annulations. Also, induced a significant increase in malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels, as well as a decrease in reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase and catalase levels compared to control group. Moreover, sections of treated rats' liver, kidney and spleen displayed normal cellular appearance. In conclusion, this is the first in vivo study to evaluate Ag NPs efficacy against S. muris in laboratory rats without significant toxicity.

Using an ionomer as a size regulator in γ-radiation induced synthesis of Ag nanocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solution

Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are among the most promising candidates to replace Pt as the catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). However, synthesizing size-controlled Ag NPs with efficient catalytic performance is still challenging. Herein, uniform Ag NPs are produced through a γ-radiation induced synthesis route in aqueous solutions, using the ionomer PTPipQ100 as both an efficient size regulator in the synthesis and a conductor of hydroxide ions during the ORR process. The origin of the size control is mainly attributed to the affinity of the ionomer to metallic silver. The resulting Ag NPs covered with ionomer layers can be applied as model catalysts for ORR. The nanoparticles that were prepared using 320 ppm ionomer in the reaction solution turned out to be coated with a ∼ 1 nm thick ionomer layer and exhibited superior ORR activity as compared to other Ag NPs of similar size studied here. The improved electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the optimal ionomer coverage that enables fast oxygen diffusion, as well as interactions at the Ag-ionomer interface which promote the desorption of OH intermediates from the Ag surface. This work demonstrates the advantage of using an ionomer as the capping agent to produce efficient ORR catalysts.

The Role of Silver Nanoparticles in Electrochemical Sensors for Aquatic Environmental Analysis

With rapidly increasing environmental pollution, there is an urgent need for the development of fast, low-cost, and effective sensing devices for the detection of various organic and inorganic substances. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well known for their superior optoelectronic and physicochemical properties, and have, therefore, attracted a great deal of interest in the sensor arena. The introduction of AgNPs onto the surface of two-dimensional (2D) structures, incorporation into conductive polymers, or within three-dimensional (3D) nanohybrid architectures is a common strategy to fabricate novel platforms with improved chemical and physical properties for analyte sensing. In the first section of this review, the main wet chemical reduction approaches for the successful synthesis of functional AgNPs for electrochemical sensing applications are discussed. Then, a brief section on the sensing principles of voltammetric and amperometric sensors is given. The current utilization of silver nanoparticles and silver-based composite nanomaterials for the fabrication of voltammetric and amperometric sensors as novel platforms for the detection of environmental pollutants in water matrices is summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future directions for the nanosilver-based electrochemical sensing of environmental pollutants are outlined.

A Comparative Study of Cancer Cells Susceptibility to Silver Nanoparticles Produced by Electron Beam

Introduction: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have a wide range of bioactivity, which is highly dependent on particle size, shape, stabilizer, and production method. Here, we present the results of studies of AgNPs cytotoxic properties obtained by irradiation treatment of silver nitrate solution and various stabilizers by accelerating electron beam in a liquid medium. Methods: The results of studies of morphological characteristics of silver nanoparticles were obtained by transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering measurements. MTT test, alamar blue test, flow cytometry, and fluorescence microscopy were used to study the anti-cancer properties. As biological objects for standard tests, adhesive and suspension cell cultures of normal and tumor origin, including prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, neuroblastoma, and leukemia, were studied. Results: The results showed that the silver nanoparticles obtained by irradiation with polyvinylpyrrolidone and collagen hydrolysate are stable in solutions. Samples with different stabilizers were characterized by a wide average size distribution from 2 to 50 nm and low zeta potential from −7.3 to +12.4 mV. All AgNPs formulations showed a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on tumor cells. It has been established that the particles obtained with the combination of polyvinylpyrrolidone/collagen hydrolysate have a relatively more pronounced cytotoxic effect in comparison to samples stabilized with only collagen or only polyvinylpyrrolidone. The minimum inhibitory concentrations for nanoparticles were less than 1 μg/mL for various types of tumor cells. It was found that neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) is the most susceptible, and ovarian cancer (SKOV-3) is the most resistant to the action of silver nanoparticles. The activity of the AgNPs formulation prepared with a mixture of PVP and PH studied in this work was higher that activity of other AgNPs formulations reported in the literature by about 50 times. Conclusions: The results indicate that the AgNPs formulations synthesized with an electron beam and stabilized with polyvinylpyrrolidone and protein hydrolysate deserve deep study for their further use in selective cancer treatment without harming healthy cells in the patient organism.

Preparation of Biocidal Nanocomposites in X-ray Irradiated Interpolyelectolyte Complexes of Polyacrylic Acid and Polyethylenimine with Ag-Ions

Due to the presence of cationic units interpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPECs) can be used as a universal basis for preparation of biocidal coatings on different surfaces. Metallopolymer nanocomposites were successfully synthesized in irradiated solutions of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethylenimine (PEI), and dispersions of non-stoichiometric IPECs of PAA–PEI containing silver ions. The data from turbidimetric titration and dynamic light scattering showed that pH 6 is the optimal value for obtaining IPECs. Metal polymer complexes based on IPEC with a PAA/PEI ratio equal to 3/1 and 1/3 were selected for synthesis of nanocomposites due to their aggregative stability. Studies using methods of UV–VIS spectroscopy and TEM have demonstrated that the size and spatial organization of silver nanoparticles depend on the composition of polymer systems. The average sizes of nanoparticles are 5 nm and 20 nm for complexes with a molar ratio of PAA/PEI units equal to 3/1 and 1/3, respectively. The synthesized nanocomposites were applied to the glass surface and exhibited high antibacterial activity against both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella). It is shown that IPEC-Ag coatings demonstrate significantly more pronounced biocidal activity not only in comparison with macromolecular complexes of PAA–PEI, but also coatings of PEI and PEI based nanocomposites.

Ribes nigrum L. Extract-Mediated Green Synthesis and Antibacterial Action Mechanisms of Silver Nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) represent one of the most widely employed metal-based engineered nanomaterials with a broad range of applications in different areas of science. Plant extracts (PEs) serve as green reducing and coating agents and can be exploited for the generation of Ag NPs. In this study, the phytochemical composition of ethanolic extract of black currant (Ribes nigrum) leaves was determined. The main components of extract include quercetin rutinoside, quercetin hexoside, quercetin glucuronide, quercetin malonylglucoside and quercitrin. The extract was subsequently employed for the green synthesis of Ag NPs. Consequently, R. nigrum leaf extract and Ag NPs were evaluated for potential antibacterial activities against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and kanamycin-resistant E. coli pARG-25 strains). Intriguingly, the plant extract did not show any antibacterial effect, whilst Ag NPs demonstrated significant activity against tested bacteria. Biogenic Ag NPs affect the ATPase activity and energy-dependent H⁺-fluxes in both strains of E. coli, even in the presence of N,N’-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD). Thus, the antibacterial activity of the investigated Ag NPs can be explained by their impact on the membrane-associated properties of bacteria.

Tailorable Electronic and Electric Properties of Graphene with Selective Decoration of Silver Nanoparticles by Laser-Assisted Photoreduction

While graphene shows great potential for diverse device applications, to broaden the scope of graphene-based device applications further, it would be necessary to tune the electronic state of graphene and its resultant electrical properties properly. Surface decoration with metal nanoparticles is one of the efficient doping methods to control the properties of two-dimensional materials. Here, we report the p-type doping effects in single-layer graphene decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) that were formed area-selectively by the facile one-step photoreduction (PR) process based on focused-laser irradiation. During the PR process, AgNPs were reduced on graphene in AgNO₃ solution by laser-driven photoexcitation followed by chemical reactions. Based on scanning electron microscopy analyses, the morphology characteristics of AgNPs were shown to be modulated by the laser dwell time and power controllably. Further, p-type doping effects were demonstrated using graphene-field-effect transistor structures whose graphene channels were selectively decorated with AgNPs by the PR process, as validated by the decrease in channel resistance and the shift of the Dirac point voltage. Moreover, the growth of AgNPs was observed to be more active on the graphene channel that was laser-annealed ahead of the PR process, leading to enhancing the efficiency of this approach for altering device characteristics.

TiO2/AgO composites by one step photo reduction technique as electron transport layers (ETL) for dye-sensitized solar cells

Dye-sensitized solar cell's electron transport layer is responsible for transporting photo-generated electrons to the outer circuit. Utilizing localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR), light absorption could be enhanced to a greater degree, which can drive dye molecules to excited state more effectively than far-field light. In this work, TiO₂ nanoparticles were prepared by solvothermal method, and Ag nanoparticles were decorated over TiO₂ surface through photodeposition method. XRD data of the TiO₂ sample exhibits anatase phase and in the Ag nanoparticle decorated TiO₂ sample, peaks corresponding to (111) planes of Ag was observed. UV-Vis absorption analysis of the TiO₂ and Ag decorated TiO₂ samples showed absorption in the UV region for the TiO_2, and the SPR effect was detected for the Ag deposited TiO₂ samples. Ag nanoparticles decorated over TiO₂ was observed to be spherical in shape through the images from transmission electron microscope. Presence of both Ag and AgO in the prepared sample was revealed through the data from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The prepared material was used as photoanodes in the construction of the DSSCs, and their performance was evaluated.

Biologically Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles and Their Diverse Applications

Nanotechnology has become the most effective and rapidly developing field in the area of material science, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are of leading interest because of their smaller size, larger surface area, and multiple applications. The use of plant sources as reducing agents in the fabrication of silver nanoparticles is most attractive due to the cheaper and less time-consuming process for synthesis. Furthermore, the tremendous attention of AgNPs in scientific fields is due to their multiple biomedical applications such as antibacterial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities, and they could be used for clean environment applications. In this review, we briefly describe the types of nanoparticle syntheses and various applications of AgNPs, including antibacterial, anticancer, and larvicidal applications and photocatalytic dye degradation. It will be helpful to the extent of a better understanding of the studies of biological synthesis of AgNPs and their multiple uses.

Polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel loaded with silver nanoparticles exhibited antibacterial and self-healing properties

Hydrogel materials are gradually increasing research in biological aspects due to their unique properties. In order to prepare hydrogels with the potential to be used in clinical wound therapy, the authors prepared a bifunctional hydrogel with antibacterial and self-healing properties. The hydrogel was composed of borax cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), which realizes self-healing between polymers through hydrogen bonds and borate ester bonds. The double cross-linking of hydrogen bonds and borate ester bonds also endows the hydrogel with better mechanical properties (toughness and tensile stress can reach 22.30 MJ/m³ and 70.35 KPa, respectively). On this basis, adding highly stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to the hydrogel can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. This idea provides the possibility for the application of hydrogels in the process of biological wound healing.

Chemical Sensor Nanotechnology in Pharmaceutical Drug Research

The increase in demand for pharmaceutical treatments due to pandemic-related illnesses has created a need for improved quality control in drug manufacturing. Understanding the physical, biological, and chemical properties of APIs is an important area of health-related research. As such, research into enhanced chemical sensing and analysis of pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for drug development, delivery and monitoring has become immensely popular in the nanotechnology space. Nanomaterial-based chemical sensors have been used to detect and analyze APIs related to the treatment of various illnesses pre and post administration. Furthermore, electrical and optical techniques are often coupled with nano-chemical sensors to produce data for various applications which relate to the efficiencies of the APIs. In this review, we focus on the latest nanotechnology applied to probing the chemical and biochemical properties of pharmaceutical drugs, placing specific interest on several types of nanomaterial-based chemical sensors, their characteristics, detection methods, and applications. This study offers insight into the progress in drug development and monitoring research for designing improved quality control methods for pharmaceutical and health-related research.

Effectiveness of Silver Nanoparticles Deposited in Facemask Material for Neutralising Viruses

Cloth used for facemask material has been coated with silver nanoparticles using an aerosol method that passes pure uncoated nanoparticles through the cloth and deposits them throughout the volume. The particles have been characterized by electron microscopy and have a typical diameter of 4 nm with the atomic structure of pure metallic silver presented as an assortment of single crystals and polycrystals. The particles adhere well to the cloth fibers, and the coating consists of individual nanoparticles at low deposition times, evolving to fully agglomerated assemblies in heavy coatings. The cloth was exposed to Usutu virus and murine norovirus particles in suspension and allowed to dry, following which, the infectious virus particles were rescued by soaking the cloth in culture media. It was found that up to 98% of the virus particles were neutralized by this contact with the silver nanoparticles for optimum deposition conditions. The best performance was obtained with agglomerated films and with polycrystalline nanoparticles. The work indicates that silver nanoparticles embedded in masks can neutralize the majority of virus particles that enter the mask and thus increase the opacity of masks to infectious viruses by up to a factor of 50. In addition, the majority of the virus particles released from the mask after use are non-infectious.

Ag Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications-Synthesis and Characterization-A Review

Silver nanoparticles have been intensively studied over a long period of time because they exhibit antibacterial properties in infection treatments, wound healing, or drug delivery systems. The advantages that silver nanoparticles offer regarding the functionalization confer prolonged stability and make them suitable for biomedical applications. Apart from functionalization, silver nanoparticles exhibit various shapes and sizes depending on the conditions used through their fabrications and depending on their final purpose. This paper presents a review of silver nanoparticles with respect to synthesis procedures, including the polluting green synthesis. Currently, the most commonly used characterization techniques required for nanoparticles investigation in antibacterial treatments are described briefly, since silver nanoparticles possess differences in their structure or morphology.

Kinetic and Mechanistic Studies of the Formation of Silver Nanoparticles by Nicotinamide as a Reducing Agent

Here, in the present study, silver nanoparticles (SNPs) in the size range 6-10 nm have been synthesized by a chemical reduction method using nicotinamide (NTA), an anti-inflammatory agent, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a good stabilizing agent, to preparing the nanoparticles in the 6-10 nm size range. Kinetic studies on the formation of SNPs have been performed spectrophotometrically at 410 nm (strong plasmon band) in aqueous medium as a function of [AgNO₃], [NTA], [NaOH], and [CTAB]. The plot of ln(A _∞ - A _t ) versus time exhibited a straight line and the pseudo-first-order rate constants of different variables were calculated from its slope. On the basis of experimental findings, a plausible mechanism was proposed for the formation of SNPs colloid. From the mechanism, it is proved that the reduction of silver ions proceeded through the formation of silver oxide in colloidal form by their reaction with hydroxide ions and NTA after performing their function and readily undergo hydrolysis to form nicotinic acid as a hydrolysis product with the release of ammonia gas. The preliminary characterization of the SNPs was carried out by using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The detailed characterization of SNPs was also carried out using other experimental techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). SNPs show a remarkable catalytic activity of up to 90% for the reduction of the cationic dye methylene blue.

Interfacial Nucleation Mechanism of Water-Soluble Ag-In-S Quantum Dots at Room Temperature and Their Visible Light Catalytic Performance

A novel interfacial reaction nucleation mechanism for the preparation of water-soluble Ag-In-S quantum dots (AIS QDs) was proposed in which interfacial acid regulates the concentration of hydroxide ions outside the complex and sulfur sources attack cations at the interface of the complex, covalent bonds between cations and sulfur sources are formed at the interface of the complex, and the nucleation and growth of crystals is finished at room temperature. By bypassing the heating process normally necessary for crystal nucleation and growth, AIS QDs can be produced on a large scale under simple, mild conditions. At the same time, the characteristics of this mechanism enable AIS QDs to be directly synthesized in an organic pollutant solution. This study represents a significant advance in the mechanism of crystal synthesis and contributes to the photocatalytic decomposition of organic pollutants from theory to practice.

Composite Electrodes Based on Carbon Materials Decorated with Hg Nanoparticles for the Simultaneous Detection of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Monitoring water quality has become a goal to prevent issues related to human health and environmental conditions. In this sense, the concentration of metal ions in water sources is screened, as these are considered persistent contaminants. In this work, we describe the implementation of customized graphite electrodes decorated with two types of Hg nanoparticles (Hg-NPs), optimized toward the electrochemical detection of Cd, Pb and Cu. Here, we combine Hg, a well-known property to form alloys with other metals, with the nanoscale features of Hg-NPs, resulting in improved electrochemical sensors towards these analytes with a substantial reduction in the used Hg amount. Hg-NPs were synthesized using poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) in a combined role as a reducing and stabilizing agent, and then appropriately characterized by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Zeta Potential. The surface of composite electrodes with optimized graphite content was modified by the drop-casting of the prepared Hg-NPs. The obtained nanocomposite electrodes were morphologically characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and electrochemically by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the Hg-NP-modified electrodes present better responses towards Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) detection in comparison with the bare graphite electrode. Analytical performance of sensors was evaluated by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), obtaining a linear range of 0.005–0.5 mg·L−1 for Cd2+, of 0.028–0.37 mg·L−1 for Pb2+ and of 0.057–1.1 mg·L−1 for Cu2+. Real samples were analyzed using SWASV, showing good agreement with the recovery values of inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements.

Surface disinfection with silver loaded pencil graphite prepared with green UV photoreduction technique

Carbon-based materials have been studied for their antimicrobial properties. Previously, most antimicrobial studies are investigated with suspended nanoparticles in a liquid medium. Most works are often carried out with highly ordered pyrolytic graphite. These materials are expensive and are not viable for mass use on high-touch surfaces. Additionally, highly antimicrobial silver nanoparticles are often incorporated onto substrates by chemical reduction. At times, harmful chemicals are used. In this work, low-cost graphite pencils are mechanically exfoliated and transferred onto Si substrates. The sparsely-covered graphite flakes are treated by either plasma O₂or UV irradiation. Subsequently, Ag is photo reduced in the presence of UV onto selected graphite flake samples. It is found that graphite flake surface topography and defects are dependent on the treatment process. High surface roughness and (defects density,I_D/I_G) are induced by plasma O₂follows by UV and pristine graphite flake as follows: 6.45 nm (0.62), 4.96 nm (0.5), 3.79 nm (0.47). Antimicrobial tests withE. colireveal high killing efficiency by photoreduced Ag-on-graphite flake. The reversible effect of Ag leaching can be compensated by repeating the photoreduction process. This work proposes that UV treatment is a promising technique over that of plasma O₂in view that the latter treated surface could repel bacteria resulting in lower bacteria-killing efficiency.

Strong Antimicrobial Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Obtained by the Green Synthesis in Viridibacillus sp. Extracts

Recently, green silver nanoparticles (G-AgNPs) have gained much attention in medical science due to their extraordinary effects against multidrug-resistant microorganisms. The strong antimicrobial nature of G-AgNPs corresponds to their unique physicochemical properties such as size, shape, surface charge, and active surface groups available to interact with the pathogens. The current study demonstrates a simple, environmentally friendly, and economical method to produce G-AgNPs from an environmental isolate of Viridibacillus sp. The produced G-AgNPs were characterized by various analytical methods, including UV-Vis spectroscopy, single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reduction of Ag⁺ to Ag° was observed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, which demonstrated the formation of stable G-AgNPs with a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) band at the maximum of 430 nm. TEM analysis demonstrated that the G-AgNPs were spherical with a 5–30 nm size range. The produced G-AgNPs were stable for more than 1 year in an aqueous solution at 4°C. Importantly, G-AgNPs showed remarkable antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative pathogens- E. coli and P. aeruginosa with MIC values of 0.1 and 4 μg/mL and MBC values of 1 and 8 μg/mL, respectively. This level of antimicrobial activity is superior to other AgNPs reported in the literature.

Detailed Kinetic and Mechanistic Study for the Preparation of Silver Nanoparticles by a Chemical Reduction Method in the Presence of a Neuroleptic Agent (Gabapentin) at an Alkaline pH and its Characterization

For the very first time, a detailed kinetic study for the preparation of silver nanoparticles (silver NPs) by neuroleptic agent gabapentin (GBP) in the absence of a stabilizer has been reported in this investigation. This paper is devoted to the preparation of silver nanoparticles by a chemical reduction method in which gabapentin acts as both a reductant and a stabilizer, and AgNO₃ is used as a source of Ag⁺ ions and NaOH for maintaining the alkaline medium. A UV-visible spectrophotometer is used to monitor the progress of the reaction kinetics in an aqueous medium by changing the concentration of different variables such as AgNO₃, NaOH, and gabapentin at 40 °C. It is found that the reaction rate follows a pseudo-first-order reaction. The thermodynamic activation parameters were also studied at five different temperatures (303, 308, 313, 318, and 323 K) and used in the support of the proposed mechanistic scheme for the formation of silver nanoparticles. The prepared silver nanoparticles were characterized using different techniques: UV-visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. The average particle size was observed in the range of 5-45 nm.

Tertiary Nanosystem Composed of Graphene Quantum Dots, Levofloxacin and Silver Nitrate for Microbiological Control

BACKGROUND

Infectious diseases have the highest mortality rate in the world and these numbers are associated with scarce and/or ineffective diagnosis and bacterial resistance. Currently, with the development of new pharmaceutical formulations, nanotechnology is gaining prominence.

METHODS

Nanomicelles were produced by ultrasonication. The particle size and shape were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and confirmed by dynamic light scattering, also thermogravimetric analysis was performed to evaluate the thermal stability. Finally, antibacterial activity has been performed.

RESULTS

The results showed that a rod-shaped nanosystem, with 316.1 nm and PDI of 0.243 was formed. The nanosystem was efficient against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii with MIC inferior to 0.98 and a synergistic effect between silver graphene quantum dots and levofloxacin was observed.

CONCLUSION

The nanosystem produced may rise as a promising agent against the bacterial threat, especially regarding bacterial resistance.

Rowan Berries: A Potential Source for Green Synthesis of Extremely Monodisperse Gold and Silver Nanoparticles and Their Antimicrobial Property

Rowanberries (Sorbus aucuparia) are omnipresent in Europe. The medicinal importance of rowanberries is widely known and corresponds to the active ingredients present in the fruits, mainly polyphenols, carotenoids, and organic acids. In the current study, we explored rowanberries for the reduction of gold and silver salts into nanoparticles. Rowanberries-mediated gold nanoparticles (RB-AuNPs) formed within 5 s at room temperature, and silver nanoparticles (RB-AgNPs) formed in 20 min at 90 °C. The produced nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), single-particle inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The characterization confirmed that the nanoparticles are highly monodisperse, spherical, stable over long periods, and exhibit a high negative zeta potential values. The produced RB-AuNPs and RB-AgNPs were 90–100 nm and 20–30 nm in size with a thick biological corona layer surrounding them, providing extreme stability but lowering the antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobials study of RB-AgNPs revealed that the nanoparticles have antimicrobial potential with an MBC value of 100 µg/mL against P. aeruginosa and 200 µg/mL against E. coli.

Optimization of hyphenated asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation for the analysis of silver nanoparticles in aqueous solutions

The extensive use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products, medicine, and industry leads to their release into the environment. Thus, a characterization of the concentration, size, fate, and toxicity of AgNPs under environmental conditions is required. In this study, we present the characterization and optimization of an asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) system coupled with UV/Vis spectrophotometer and dynamic light scattering (DLS) detector as a powerful tool for the size separation and multi-parameter characterization of AgNPs in complex matrices. The hyphenated AF4-UV/Vis-DLS system was first characterized using individual injections of the different size fractions. We used electrostatically stabilized AgNPs of 20-, 50-, and 80-nm nominal diameters coated with lipoic acid. We investigated the effect of applied cross-flows, carrier solutions, focus times, and quantity of injected particles on the nature of the AF4 fractograms and on the integrity of the AgNPs. Best size separation of a 1:1 mixture of 20- and 80-nm AgNPs was achieved using cross-flows of 0.5 and 0.7 mL/min with 1 mM NaCl and 0.05% v/v Mucasol as carrier solutions. We also researched the behavior of AgNPs in natural waters using the hyphenated AF4-UV/Vis-DLS system, under determined optimal conditions. Silver nanomaterials: synthesis and (electro/photo) catalytic applications

In view of their unique characteristics and properties, silver nanomaterials (Ag NMs) have been used not only in the field of nanomedicine but also for diverse advanced catalytic technologies. In this comprehensive review, light is shed on general synthetic approaches encompassing chemical reduction, sonochemical, microwave, and thermal treatment among the preparative methods for the syntheses of Ag-based NMs and their catalytic applications. Additionally, some of the latest innovative approaches such as continuous flow integrated with MW and other benign approaches have been emphasized that ultimately pave the way for sustainability. Moreover, the potential applications of emerging Ag NMs, including sub nanomaterials and single atoms, in the field of liquid-phase catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis as well as a positive role of Ag NMs in catalytic reactions are meticulously summarized. The scientific interest in the synthesis and applications of Ag NMs lies in the integrated benefits of their catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and recovery. Therefore, the rise and journey of Ag NM-based catalysts will inspire a new generation of chemists to tailor and design robust catalysts that can effectively tackle major environmental challenges and help to replace noble metals in advanced catalytic applications. This overview concludes by providing future perspectives on the research into Ag NMs in the arena of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

Optimization for synthesis of silver nanoparticles through response surface methodology using leaf extract of Boswellia sacra and its application in antimicrobial activity

In the present work, leaf extract of Boswellia sacra was used as reductant for synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The variables such as volume of Boswellia sacra leaf extract (1%), volume of silver nitrate (1 mM), and temperature were optimized by response surface methodology via Box-Behnken design for the synthesis of AgNPs. Design-Expert software generated the optimum conditions for the highest yield of silver nanoparticles as 8 mL of 1 mM AgNO₃, 8 mL of 1% Boswellia sacra leaf extract, and temperature = 55 °C. The formed AgNPs were isolated and purified by centrifugation process using ethanol/ distilled water. AgNPs were characterized using FTIR, SEM, TEM, EDX, and XRD. AgNPs showed surface plasmon resonance absorption band at 422 nm. XRD pattern indicated the crystalline nature of the particles (diameter 11.17 to 37.50 nm) with face-centered cubic structure. SEM and TEM images highlighted the formation of spherical AgNPs. The energy dispersive spectroscopic spectrum confirmed the presence of elemental silver. The microbial activity of AgNPs was evaluated against bacteria and fungi. Synthesized AgNPs were very effective against Gram-positive E. coli bacterial strains and fungal strains (Penicillium chrysogenum).

High-yield synthesis of silver nanowires for transparent conducting PET films

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) with ultrahigh purity and high yield were successfully synthesized by employing a modified facile polyol method using PVP as a capping and stabilizing agent. The reaction was carried out at a moderate temperature of 160 °C under mild stirring for about 3 h. The prepared AgNWs exhibited parallel alignment on a large scale and were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and PL spectroscopy. The luminescent AgNWs exhibited red emission, which was accredited to deep holes. The SEM results confirmed the formation of AgNWs of 3.3 to 4.7 µm in length with an average diameter of about 86 nm, that is, the aspect ratio values of the AgNWs exceeded 45. An ink consisting of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and AgNWs was transferred to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films by simple mechanical pressing. The PET films retained transparency and flexibility after the ink coating. The maximum transmittance value of as-prepared PET films in the visible region was estimated to be about 92.5% with a sheet resistance value of ca. 20 Ω/sq. This makes the films a potential substitute to commonly used expensive indium tin oxide (ITO) in the field of flexible optoelectronics.

Ag-Based Synergistic Antimicrobial Composites. A Critical Review

The emerging problem of the antibiotic resistance development and the consequences that the health, food and other sectors face stimulate researchers to find safe and effective alternative methods to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and biofilm formation. One of the most promising and efficient groups of materials known for robust antimicrobial performance is noble metal nanoparticles. Notably, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been already widely investigated and applied as antimicrobial agents. However, it has been proposed to create synergistic composites, because pathogens can find their way to develop resistance against metal nanophases; therefore, it could be important to strengthen and secure their antipathogen potency. These complex materials are comprised of individual components with intrinsic antimicrobial action against a wide range of pathogens. One part consists of inorganic AgNPs, and the other, of active organic molecules with pronounced germicidal effects: both phases complement each other, and the effect might just be the sum of the individual effects, or it can be reinforced by the simultaneous application. Many organic molecules have been proposed as potential candidates and successfully united with inorganic counterparts: polysaccharides, with chitosan being the most used component; phenols and organic acids; and peptides and other agents of animal and synthetic origin. In this review, we overview the available literature and critically discuss the findings, including the mechanisms of action, efficacy and application of the silver-based synergistic antimicrobial composites. Hence, we provide a structured summary of the current state of the research direction and give an opinion on perspectives on the development of hybrid Ag-based nanoantimicrobials (NAMs).

The Role of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles in Antimicrobial Mechanisms

Nanotechnology is an area of science in which new materials are developed. The correlation between nanotechnology and microbiology is essential for the development of new drugs and vaccines. The main advantage of combining these areas is to associate the latest technology in order to obtain new ways for solving problems related to microorganisms. This review seeks to investigate nanoparticle formation's antimicrobial properties, primarily when connected to the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The development of new sustainable methods for nanoparticle production has been instrumental in designing alternative, non-toxic, energy-friendly, and environmentally friendly routes. In this sense, it is necessary to study silver nanoparticles' green synthesis concerning their antimicrobial properties. Antimicrobial silver nanoparticles' mechanisms demonstrate efficiency to gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. However, attention is needed with the emergence of resistance to these antimicrobials. This article seeks to relate the parameters of green silver- based nanosystems with the efficiency of antimicrobial activity.

In Situ Formation of Silver Nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) onto Textile Fibers

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) adhered/inserted on textile fibers have an effective antimicrobial role. However, their release due to low adherence and their fate in the natural settings have been questioned in terms of toxicity level. In order to overcome this recurrent problem of adherence, the in situ formation of Ag-NPs in five textile fibers (cotton (untreated and chemically bleached), sheep's wool, polyamide, and polyester) was assessed. Herein, the fibers were first immersed in a silver ion solution (1 g/L of AgNO₃) for ion saturation at room T for 24 h followed by draining fibers and their reimmersion this time in a strong chemical reducing solution (0.25 g/L of NaBH₄) at room T for 24 h. This latter step leads to the in situ formation of Ag-NPs where size (5 nm < size < 50 nm), surface covering concentration, and aggregation degree depend on the textile fiber kind as deduced from FESEM images. This simple lab chemical method allows instantaneous in situ formation of Ag-NPs onto fibers without the requirement of additional thermal treatment. Moreover, for natural fibers, the formation of Ag-NPs inside of them is also expected as confirmed from FESEM images in cotton cross sections. In complement, all textile fibers containing Ag-NPs (sheep's wool 10 mg/g > untreated cotton 2.3 mg/g > bleached cotton 1 mg/g > polyamide 0.62 mg/g > polyester 0.28 mg/g) were submitted to interact with strong oxidants in an aqueous media (7.5% v/v of H₂O₂, 0.5 and 0.05 M of HNO₃ and ultrapure water as the control) using flow-through reactor experiments. Here, breakthrough curves reveal that the oxidative dissolution rate (given in mol/g min) of adhered Ag-NPs (ionic release) depends strongly on fiber nature, and nature and concentration of oxidant solution. In summary, this fundamental study suggests that Ag-NPs may be successfully adhered/inserted in natural fibers (wool and cotton) in a safety-design perspective with performant biocide properties as confirmed by using Bacillus subtilis.

Silver-Based Nanomaterials as Therapeutic Agents Against Coronaviruses: A Review

Since the identification of the first human coronavirus in the 1960s, a total of six coronaviruses that are known to affect humans have been identified: 229E, OC43, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), NL63, HKU1, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Presently, the human world is affected by a novel version of the coronavirus family known as SARS-CoV-2, which has an extremely high contagion rate. Although the infection fatality rate (IFR) of this rapidly spreading virus is not high (ranging from 0.00% to 1.54% across 51 different locations), the increasing number of infections and deaths has created a worldwide pandemic situation. To provide therapy to severely infected patients, instant therapeutic support is urgently needed and the repurposing of already approved drugs is presently in progress. In this regard, the development of nanoparticles as effective transporters for therapeutic drugs or as alternative medicines is highly encouraged and currently needed. The size range of the viruses is within 60-140 nm, which is slightly larger than the diameters of nanoparticles, making nanomaterials efficacious tools with antiviral properties. Silver-based nanomaterials (AgNMs) demonstrate antimicrobial and disinfectant effects mostly by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and are presently considered as a versatile tool for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Other metal-based nanoparticles have been primarily reported as delivery agents or surface modifying agents, vaccine adjuvant against coronavirus. The present review summarizes and discusses the possible effectiveness of various surface-modified AgNMs against animal coronaviruses and presents a concept for AgNM-based therapeutic treatment of SARS-CoV-2 in the near future.

Light-induced synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Ocimum tenuiflorum extract: Characterisation and application

Stable silver nanoparticles of various sizes are synthesised using the aqueous extract of Tulsi ( Ocimum tenuiflorum) as the reducing agent as well as a stabilising agent under the influence of light of wavelength ranging from 200 to 900 nm. The formation of silver nanoparticles is monitored using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer and the particle shape, size and stability are analysed using scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurement techniques. It is observed that the size of the silver nanoparticles decreases on increasing the wavelength of irradiating light. The silver nanoparticles show antimicrobial activity against gram-positive ( Bacillus subtilis), as well as gram-negative ( Escherichia coli) bacteria. The antimicrobial activity shows an inverse relationship with the size of the silver nanoparticles. The bio-synthesised silver nanoparticles are successfully embedded in a polymeric film to act as an active antimicrobial film that can potentially release the active constituents.

c-Phycocyanin primed silver nano conjugates: Studies on red blood cell stress resilience mechanism

Green synthesis of metal-encased nutraceutical nano-hybrids has been a target for research over the last few years. In the present investigation, we have reported temperature dependent facile synthesis of silver nanoparticles using FDA approved c phycocyanin (cPC). The cPC conjugated silver nanoparticles (AgcPCNPs) were characterized by TEM, Zeta Potential, UV-vis, XPS, FTIR, and CD Spectroscopy. The temperature optimization studies suggested the synthesis of stable AgcPCNPs at 40 °C while at higher temperature system shows aggregated appearance. Molecular docking studies predicted the exclusive interaction of C, D, I, and J chains of cPC with the surface of AgNPs. Moreover, AgcPCNPs significantly (p < 0.1 %) counteract the toxic nature of AgNPs on red blood cell by measuring parameters like total RBC count, % hemolysis, % hematocrit, coagulation time, pH, electrolyte concentrations and degree of blood cell lipid peroxidation by the anti-oxidation mechanism. Skin fibroblast in vitro cell migration result suggeststhat AgcPCNPs enhanced the degree of cell movement towards the wound area. Data obtained collectively demonstrate that AgcPCNPs can be a better agent in the dermal wound healing with reduced toxicity with the bi-phasic advantage of cPC as a wound healer and Ag nano-metal as an anti-bacterial agent.

Bactericidal Silver Nanoparticles by Atmospheric Pressure Solution Plasma Processing

Silver nanoparticles have applications in plasmonics, medicine, catalysis and electronics. We report a simple, cost-effective, facile and reproducible technique to synthesise silver nanoparticles via plasma-induced non-equilibrium liquid chemistry with the absence of a chemical reducing agent. Silver nanoparticles with tuneable sizes from 5.4 to 17.8 nm are synthesised and characterised using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and other analytic techniques. A mechanism for silver nanoparticle formation is also proposed. The antibacterial activity of the silver nanoparticles was investigated with gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The inhibition of both bacteria types was observed. This is a promising alternative method for the instant synthesis of silver nanoparticles, instead of the conventional chemical reduction route, for numerous applications.

Limitations of Recent Studies Dealing with the Antibacterial Properties of Silver Nanoparticles: Fact and Opinion

Due to the constant increase in the number of infectious diseases and the concomitant lack of treatment available, metallic nanoparticles (e.g., silver nanoparticles) have been of particular interest in the last decades. Indeed, several studies suggest that silver nanoparticles have valuable antimicrobial activities, especially against bacteria, which may lead us to think that these nanoparticles may one day be an attractive therapeutic option for the treatment of bacterial infections. Unfortunately, when we look a little closer to these studies, we can see a very great heterogeneity (e.g., in the study design, in the synthetic process of nanoparticles, in the methods that explore the antibacterial properties of nanoparticles and in the bacteria chosen) making cross-interpretation between these studies impossible, and significantly limiting the interest of silver nanoparticles as promising antibacterial agents. We have selected forty-nine international publications published since 2015, and propose to discuss, not the results obtained, but precisely the different methodologies developed in these publications. Through this discussion, we highlighted the aspects to improve, or at least to homogenize, in order to definitively establish the interest of silver nanoparticles as valuable antibacterial agents.

Bifunctionalized Silver Nanoparticles as Hg2+ Plasmonic Sensor in Water: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Ecosafety

In this work, hydrophilic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), bifunctionalized with citrate (Cit) and L-cysteine (L-cys), were synthesized. The typical local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at λ _max = 400 nm together with Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements (<2R_H> = 8 ± 1 nm) and TEM studies (Ø = 5 ± 2 nm) confirmed the system nanodimension and the stability in water. Molecular and electronic structures of AgNPs were investigated by FTIR, SR-XPS, and NEXAFS techniques. We tested the system as plasmonic sensor in water with 16 different metal ions, finding sensitivity to Hg²⁺ in the range 1–10 ppm. After this first screening, the molecular and electronic structure of the AgNPs-Hg²⁺ conjugated system was deeply investigated by SR-XPS. Moreover, in view of AgNPs application as sensors in real water systems, environmental safety assessment (ecosafety) was performed by using standardized ecotoxicity bioassay as algal growth inhibition tests (OECD 201, ISO 10253:2006), coupled with determination of Ag⁺ release from the nanoparticles in fresh and marine aqueous exposure media, by means of ICP-MS. These latest studies confirmed low toxicity and low Ag⁺ release. Therefore, these ecosafe AgNPs demonstrate a great potential in selective detection of environmental Hg²⁺, which may attract a great interest for several biological research fields.

Biofunctionalization of Silver Nanoparticles With Lactonase Leads to Altered Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Properties

Background: N-acylated homoserine lactone lactonase which cleave the Acyl homoserine lactone molecules produced by biofilm-forming pathogens and silver nano-particles (AgNPs), are known for their antibacterial effect against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, AgNPs were coated with N-acylated homoserine lactonase protein (AgNPs-AiiA) isolated from Bacillus sp. ZA12. Results: The AgNPs-AiiA complex was characterized by UV-visible spectra, Dynamic light Scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (Fe-SEM). The synthesized nano-particles were found to be spherical in shape and had an approximate size of 22.4 nm. Treatment with AiiA coated AgNPs showed a significant reduction in exopolysaccharide production, metabolic activity, cell surface hydrophobicity of bacterial cells, and anti-biofilm activity against multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae as compared to treatment with AiiA protein and neat AgNPs. AgNPs-AiiA complex exhibited potent antibiofilm activity at sub-optimal concentration of 14.4 μg/mL without being harmful to the macrophages and to the various tissues including kidney, liver, spleen and lungs of BALB/c mice upon intra-venous administration. Conclusion: It is concluded that at a concentration of 14.4 μg/mL, AgNPs coated with AiiA kill bacteria without harming the host tissue and provides a suitable template to design novel anti-biofilm drug to circumvent the issue of drug resistance.

Facile In Situ Preparation and In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of PDMAEMA-Based Silver-Bearing Copolymer Micelles

Well-defined polymer micelles with core-shell structure are good delivery platform for stabilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the field of antimicrobials targeting diseases. The rational construction of the polymer structure, an efficient, facile, and green preparation approach, and comprehensive exploration of the derived AgNPs are necessary, such as size, particle stability, antibacterial activity, and other properties. Herein, we designed and assessed the in vitro antimicrobial activity of AgNPs-decorated copolymer micelles with different copolymer topologies. First, linear or four-arm star triblock copolymers with the similar molecular weight and degree of polymerization were obtained, which consisted of DMAEMA for in situ reduction of silver ions to form AgNPs without external reducing agent. HEMA and PEGMA in micellar shell gave an enhanced stability of AgNPs during blood circulation. The combination of computational modeling and experimental results indicated that both types of micelles could fabricate AgNPs with monodisperse and spherical morphology. Star copolymer micelles stabilized AgNPs had smaller average size, better stability, and higher antibacterial activity than those with linear structure, which may due to higher stability of micelles from star copolymers. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity evaluation test showed that the achieved linear or star copolymers micelles stabilized AgNPs had good biocompatibility. This work provides a facile and universal approach in the rational design of micelles stabilized AgNPs with suitable topology for fighting against a wide range of bacterial infections.

Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial study of Ag doped magnesium ferrite nanocomposite

Nanomaterials are attracted a great deal of attention from scientific community due its unique properties and applications. The small size ferrites have opened up the door for intensive research to utilize their properties for biomedical applications. Ferrite nanomaterials like MgFe2O4 and its silver doped nanocomposites (Ag- MgFe2O4) have been prepared using solid state combustion method using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a fuel. The structure of as prepared ferrites and its silver doped nanocomposites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) tool and morphology by Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) tool respectively. Presence of the metals in the ferrite and its composite was confirmed by EDX pattern. Bonding nature in the composite is well studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) tool. Antibacterial activity study of the nanocomposite is carried out against various bacteria. Ag doped magnesium ferrite shows moderate activity against bacteria.

Nematicidal activity of silver nanoparticles from the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans

Background

Helminth parasites cause morbidity and mortality in both humans and animals. Most anthelmintic drugs used in the treatment of parasitic nematode infections act on target proteins or regulate the electrical activity of neurons and muscles. In this way, it can lead to paralysis, starvation, immune attack, and expulsion of the worm. However, current anthelmintics have some limitations that include a limited spectrum of activity across species and the threat of drug resistance, which highlights the need for new drugs for human and veterinary medicine.

Purpose

Present study has been conducted to determine the anthelmintic activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from the extract of nematophagous fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans, on the infecting larvae of Ancylostoma caninum (L₃).

Methods

The nanoparticles were characterized by visual, ultraviolet, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The in vitro study was based on experiments to inhibit the motility of infective larvae (L₃), and the ultrastructural analysis of the nematode was performed by images obtained by TEM.

Results

The XRD studies revealed the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles, and FTIR results implied that AgNPs were successfully synthesized and capped with compounds present in the extract. The results showed that the green synthesis of AgNPs exhibited nematicidal activity, being the only ones capable of penetrating the cuticle of the larvae, causing changes in the tegmentum, and consequently, the death of the nematode.

Conclusion

The extract of the fungus D. flagrans is able to synthesize AgNP and these have a nematicidal action.

Morphology-Controlled Fabrication of Large-Scale Dendritic Silver Nanostructures for Catalysis and SERS Applications

Highly branched metallic nanostructures, which possess a large amount of catalyst active sites and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) hot spots owing to their large surface areas, multi-level branches, corners, and edges, have shown potential in various applications including catalysis and SERS. In this study, well-defined dendritic silver (Ag) nanostructures were prepared by a facile and controllable electrochemical deposition strategy. The morphology of Ag nanostructures is controlled by regulating electrodeposition time and concentration of AgNO₃ in the electrolyte solution. Compared to conventional Ag nanoparticle films, dendritic Ag nanostructures exhibited larger SERS enhancement ascribed to the numerous hot spots exist in the nanogaps of parallel and vertically stacked multilayer Ag dendrites. In addition, the prepared dendritic Ag nanostructures show 3.2-fold higher catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH₄ than the Ag nanoparticle films. The results indicate that the dendritic Ag nanostructures represent a unique bifunctional nanostructure that serves as both efficient catalysts and excellent SERS substrates, which may be further employed as a nanoreactor for in situ investigation and real-time monitoring of catalytic reactions by SERS technique.
