Abstract
Background The elderly represents the population group with the highest rate of sedentary behavior. Sedentary behavior has an adverse impact on the elderly, which might be related to depression. Methods We queried PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and MEDLINE to collect literature data. The odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were adopted for the pooled measurements. Sub-group analyses were conducted through stratified meta-analyses based on study design, depression indicator, adjustment for physical activity, sedentary behavior indicator, and type. Sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness of the results, and publication bias was assessed through a funnel plot. Results Seven cross-sectional studies and five cohort studies were included in our meta-analysis. The overall pooled OR was 1.38 (95%CI: 1.16-1.65; P < 0.01), which indicated that sedentary behavior was positively associated with depression in older adults. Sub-group analysis showed that different study designs, depression indicators, sedentary behavior indicators, adjustment for physical activity, sedentary behavior indicator, and type produced different results. In the cross-sectional studies (OR = 1.45, 95%CI: 1.15-1.84), CES-D scale (OR = 1.54, 95%CI: 1.13-2.10), self-reported (OR = 1.39, 95%CI: 1.04-1.87), watching TV (OR = 1.75, 95%CI: 1.02-3.02), and not adjusted for physical activity (OR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.14-1.65) groups, there was a strong correlation between sedentary behavior and depression in the elderly. Conclusion Sedentary behavior is associated with depression in the elderly. As a preventive strategy, we should consider reducing their sedentary time and appropriately increasing physical activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the associations of total and prolonged sedentary time (ST) with depressive symptoms and state anxiety in women with fibromyalgia and whether these associations are modified by moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and physical fitness. METHODS This cross-sectional exploratory study included 386 women with fibromyalgia aged 51.2 ± 7.6 years. Total ST, time in prolonged bouts of ST (≥30- and ≥60-min) and MVPA were measured with triaxial accelerometry. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the "Beck Depression Inventory-second edition," state anxiety with the "State-Trait Anxiety Inventory," and physical fitness with the "Senior Fitness Test Battery." RESULTS Total and prolonged ST were directly associated with depressive symptoms (total: β = 0.19, ≥30-min bout: β = 0.15, and ≥60-min bout: β = 0.12) and odds of severe depressive symptoms (all, p < 0.001). These associations generally remained significant after adjustments for MVPA and physical fitness (all, p < 0.05). Total and prolonged ST were directly associated with state anxiety (total: β = 0.11, ≥30-min bout: β = 0.12, and ≥60-min bout: β = 0.07; all, p < 0.001). These associations were generally independent of MVPA (p < 0.05) but vanished when considering physical fitness (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of total and prolonged ST are associated with greater depressive symptoms and state anxiety in women with fibromyalgia. MVPA did not modify these associations, although physical fitness could play a protective role specially for state anxiety.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONReducing sedentary time and avoiding its accumulation in prolonged periods could potentially reduce depressive symptoms and state anxiety in fibromyalgia.Higher sedentary time is associated with more severe depressive symptoms even in patients who engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.Higher levels of physical fitness could attenuate the negative associations of sedentary time with depressive symptoms and, specially, state anxiety."Sit less, move more and exercise to increase your fitness" could be a positive message for people with fibromyalgia in clinical settings.

Abstract
This scoping review identified observational studies of adults that utilized accelerometry to assess physical activity and sedentary behavior. Key elements on accelerometry data collection were abstracted to describe current practices and completeness of reporting. We searched three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus) on June 1, 2021 for articles published up to that date. We included studies of non-institutionalized adults with an analytic sample size of at least 500. The search returned 5686 unique records. After reviewing 1027 full-text publications, we identified and abstracted accelerometry characteristics on 155 unique observational studies (154 cross-sectional/cohort studies and 1 case control study). The countries with the highest number of studies included the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Fewer studies were identified from the continent of Africa. Five of these studies were distributed donor studies, where participants connected their devices to an application and voluntarily shared data with researchers. Data collection occurred between 1999 to 2019. Most studies used one accelerometer (94.2%), but 8 studies (5.2%) used 2 accelerometers and 1 study (0.6%) used 4 accelerometers. Accelerometers were more commonly worn on the hip (48.4%) as compared to the wrist (22.3%), thigh (5.4%), other locations (14.9%), or not reported (9.0%). Overall, 12.7% of the accelerometers collected raw accelerations and 44.6% were worn for 24 hours/day throughout the collection period. The review identified 155 observational studies of adults that collected accelerometry, utilizing a wide range of accelerometer data processing methods. Researchers inconsistently reported key aspects of the process from collection to analysis, which needs addressing to support accurate comparisons across studies.

Abstract
Studies that objectively investigate patterns of everyday physical activity in relation to well-being and that use measures specific to older adults are scarce. This study aimed to explore objectively measured everyday physical activity and sedentary behavior in relation to a morale measure specifically constructed for older adults. A total of 77 persons (42 women, 35 men) aged 80 years or older (84.3 ± 3.8) wore an accelerometer device for at least 5 days. Morale was measured with the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGCMS). PGCMS scores were significantly positively associated with number of steps, time spent stepping, and time spent stepping at >75 steps per minute. Sedentary behavior did not associate with PGCMS. Promoting PA in the form of walking at any intensity-or even spending time in an upright position-and in any quantity may be important for morale, or vice versa, or the influence may be bidirectional.

Abstract
Physical activity is important for healthy aging, but few older adults achieve the goal of 150 min per week of moderate activity. The purpose of this study was to employ a robust statistical approach in the analysis of the factors related to physical activity in a diverse sample of older adults. A secondary analysis of factors associated with calculated MET-h/week was conducted in a sample of 601 African Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, European Americans, and Hispanic Americans age 59 to 96 living independently in the community. Age, education, social network, pain, and depression were the five variables that accounted for a statistically significant proportion of unique variance in the model. The strongest correlation to total MET-h/week was with depression. Directionality of the relationship between these variables and physical activity is complex: while pain and depression can reduce physical activity, activity may also help to reduce pain and depression. Additionally, of note is that many of these factors may be modified, calling for the design and testing of individual, group, and community level interventions to increase physical activity in the older population.

Device-worn measures of sedentary time and physical activity in South Asian adults at high risk for type 2 diabetes in Metro-Vancouver, Canada. PLoS One 2022; 17:e0266599. Abstract
Background South Asians have high incidence of chronic disease. Physical activity (PA) and sedentary time are modifiable risk factors for chronic disease but their assessment in South Asians has been primarily based on self-report. This study presents directly-measured PA and sedentary time in South Asian adults in Canada. Methods A subset of 100 South Asian participants from a larger study who were identified at being at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes wore Actical accelerometers for 7 days. Anthropometric measures were taken and socio-demographic factors including age, income, education level, years since immigration, presence of children under the age of 12 years in the household and employment status were self-reported. Results Ninety-one participants (mean age 65.6 years) provided valid accelerometer data. Participants accumulated mean 673.5 (95% CI: 656.6, 691.0) min/day sedentary time, 130.5 (95% CI: 117.3, 145.3) min/day light PA (LPA) and 2.3 (95% CI: 1.3, 4.2) min/day moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). For sedentary time and LPA, sex and BMI explained 51% of variability. For MVPA, BMI, season of assessment and employment status explained 23% variability with those who were employed accumulating significantly higher mean min/day of MVPA compared to those who were unemployed; (5.8, 95% CI: 1.5, 21.7) vs (1.5, 95% CI: 5.3, 20.0) respectively. Conclusion High sedentary time, and low MVPA indicates the need to focus health promotion efforts on shifting sedentary time into LPA while trying to increase MVPA. Future studies need to be based on larger, representative samples of South Asians.

Abstract
High levels of sedentary behaviour are associated with poor health outcomes in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Identifying modifiable correlates of sedentary behaviour for people with MS is essential to design effective intervention strategies to minimise sedentary time. This study aimed to quantify patterns and identify correlates of sedentary behaviour among adults with MS. Fatigue, self-efficacy, walking capability, the physical and psychological impact of MS, health-related quality of life, and participation and autonomy were assessed by questionnaire. Participants wore an activPAL monitor. Total (min/day), prolonged bouts (≥ 30 min) and breaks in sedentary time were calculated. Associations were examined using regression analysis adjusted for demographic and clinical confounders. Fifty-six adults with MS participated (mean ± SD age: 57.0 ± 9.25 years; 66% female). Self-efficacy for control over MS was associated with sedentary time (β = 0.16, 95% CI 0.01, 0.30). Self-efficacy in function maintenance (β = 0.02, 95% CI 0.00, 0.04), health-related quality of life (EuroQol-5D) (β = 31.60, 95% CI 7.25, 55.96), and the autonomy indoors subscale of the Impact on Participation and Autonomy Questionnaire (β = − 5.11, 95% CI − 9.74, − 0.485) were associated with breaks in sedentary time. Future studies should consider self-efficacy, health-related quality of life and participation and autonomy as potential components of interventions to reduce sedentary behaviour.

Abstract
Sedentary behavior contributes to health decline and frailty in older adults, especially the oldest old. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize evidence describing the volume of device-measured sedentary behavior and factors that influence sedentary behavior in community-dwelling adults aged 80 and older. Four electronic databases were searched in August 2018; the search was updated in September 2019 and December 2020. Twenty-one articles representing 16 unique datasets from six countries met inclusion criteria. Various devices and data processing methods were used to measure sedentary behavior; the most common device was the ActiGraph accelerometer. Sedentary time during the waking day ranged from 7.6 to 13.4 h/day. Studies using similar measurement methods (hip-worn ActiGraph with uniaxial cut-point <100 counts per minute) had a weighted mean of 10.6 h/day. Subgroup analyses revealed that male gender and age ≥85 may contribute to increased sedentary behavior. Only seven individual articles examined factors that influence sedentary behavior in the 80 and older age group; older age, male gender, non-Hispanic white race/ethnicity, social disadvantage, and declining cognitive function (in men) were associated with increased sedentary behavior. In conclusion, the oldest old are highly sedentary and little is known about factors that influence their sedentary behavior.

Abstract
Objective The primary aim of this study was to investigate the association between physical activity (PA) and sitting time on adults' mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety and wellbeing) and the influence of mediators and confounders. Methods An online survey was disseminated in the UK between May and June 2020. A total of 284 participants (33.5 ± 12.4 years) self-reported their PA, sitting time and mental health through validated questionnaires. Results Multiple stepwise regression analysis revealed that being of younger age, female, on a lower income, with one or more comorbid health conditions, with a previous diagnosis of mood disorder and increased sitting time independently correlated with higher depression scores (F (13,219) = 12.31, p < 0.001), and explained 42% of the variance. Similar results were found for wellbeing where socio-demographic, health outcomes and sitting time influenced the subjective wellbeing (F (14,218) = 5.77, p < 0.001, 27% variance), although only socio-demographic and health outcomes contributed to the variation in anxiety score (F (13,219) = 7.84, p < 0.001, 32% variance). PA did not explain variation when sitting time was taken into account in any of the models. Combined analysis revealed that participants with lower sedentary time (< 8 h) and with both low or moderate and high PA presented a significantly lower depression score [low PA: (B = -2.7, 95% CI -4.88, -0.52); moderate and high PA (B = -2.7, -4.88, -0.52)]. Conclusion Sitting time was strongly associated with adverse mental health during COVID-19 lockdown and should be considered in future public health recommendations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assessment of sitting has been challenging and nuances in the length of sitting are often missed. METHODS The present study assessed total, short and prolonged sitting time, and number of breaks from sitting, and their association with anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Adults (M=59.1 years) in three studies (n=1,574) wore the activPAL accelerometer (thigh) to obtain a measure of sitting, and the Actigraph accelerometer (hip) for estimating moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and HRQoL using the EQ-5D-5L (for health state and utility scores). Generalised linear modelling tested associations. RESULTS Total and prolonged sitting were associated with higher depression [total: β = 0.132 (0.010, 0.254); prolonged: β = 0.178 (0.053, 0.304)] and worse HRQoL health state scores [(total: β = -0.985 (-1.471, -0.499); prolonged: β = -0.834 (-1.301, -0.367)] and utility scores [(total: β = -0.008 (-0.012, -0.003); prolonged: β = -0.008 (-0.012, -0.004)], after controlling for covariates. MVPA was associated with better HRQoL health state and utility scores [health state: β =0.554 (0.187, 0.922); utility: β = 0.001 (0.001, 0.002)]. Total and prolonged sitting were associated with a 14% increased odds of being in the borderline/abnormal category for depression. No interactions were observed between MVPA status (active vs. inactive) and total or prolonged sitting. Anxiety was unrelated to any sitting variable. CONCLUSION Device-based measures of both total and prolonged sitting time were associated with depression and health-related quality of life, but not anxiety.

Abstract
Introduction The Prospective Physical Activity Sitting and Sleep consortium (ProPASS) is an international collaboration platform committed to harmonise thigh-worn accelerometry data. The aim of this paper is to (1) outline observational thigh-worn accelerometry studies and (2) summarise key strategic directions arising from the inaugural ProPASS meeting. Methods (1) We performed a systematic scoping review for observational studies of thigh-worn triaxial accelerometers in free-living adults (n≥100, 24 hours monitoring protocols). (2)Attendees of the inaugural ProPASS meeting were sent a survey focused on areas related to developing ProPASS: important terminology (Q1); accelerometry constructs (Q2); advantages and distinct contribution of the consortium (Q3); data pooling and harmonisation (Q4); data access and sharing (Q5 and Q6). Results (1) Eighty eligible articles were identified (22 primary studies; n~17 685). The accelerometers used most often were the ActivPAL3 and ActiGraph GT3X. The most commonly collected health outcomes were cardiometabolic and musculoskeletal. (2) None of the survey questions elicited the predefined 60% agreement. Survey responses recommended that ProPASS: use the term physical behaviour or movement behaviour rather than 'physical activity' for the data we are collecting (Q1); make only minor changes to ProPASS's accelerometry construct (Q2); prioritise developing standardised protocols/tools (Q4); facilitate flexible methods of data sharing and access (Q5 and Q6). Conclusions Thigh-worn accelerometry is an emerging method of capturing movement and posture across the 24 hours cycle. In 2020, the literature is limited to 22 primary studies from high-income western countries. This work identified ProPASS's strategic directions-indicating areas where ProPASS can most benefit the field of research: use of clear terminology, refinement of the measured construct, standardised protocols/tools and flexible data sharing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Higher levels of sedentary behavior (SB) may be associated with decreased happiness but there are no studies on this topic. Thus, we investigated this association, and its influential factors among middle-aged and older adults using nationally representative datasets from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). STUDY DESIGN Community-based cross-sectional data from the Global Ageing and Adult Health study were analyzed. SB was assessed with the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression and mediation analyses were performed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Happiness was assessed with a cross-culturally validated single-item question (5-point scale) with higher scores indicating higher levels of happiness. RESULTS The final sample included 34,129 adults aged 50 years or more (mean age = 62.4 ± SD 16 years; 51.9 % female). After adjusting for multiple confounders, increased time spent in SB (hours/day) was associated with lower happiness levels (OR = 0.96; 95 % CI = 0.94-0.98). Mobility limitations, cognitive complaints, pain/discomfort, sleep problems and disability explained the largest proportion of the association between SB and happiness. CONCLUSIONS SB was linked with lower levels of happiness in middle-aged and older adults from LMICs, although a high level of between-country heterogeneity was observed. Longitudinal and interventional studies among older people in LMICs are warranted to assess directionality and the potential for reduction in SB to improve mental well-being in this population.
