Abstract
This study examined the associations between household social, economic, and physical environments and the trajectory of functional limitations over time among middle-aged and older adults in China, and how this relationship differs by gender, age, and residence. Linear growth curve models were applied to a sample of 13,564 respondents aged 45 years and older from four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS 2011-2018). Living alone, particularly for rural, female, and older respondents, was associated with a faster functional decline when compared to living with a spouse and without children. Improved housing quality was associated with a slower functional decline. Living with young descendants and without adult children for urban residents and a lower expenditure per capita for younger respondents were associated with a faster functional decline. These findings suggest that policies aimed at enhancing living conditions have the potential to improve physical functioning of older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Each year, more than 1.5 million people in Europe have a stroke, and many experience disabilities leading to activity and participation restrictions. Home-based rehabilitation is the recommended approach for stroke rehabilitation, in line with the international shift to integrated care. Despite this, rehabilitation often focuses on the person's physical functions, not the whole life situation and opportunities to live an active life. Given that rehabilitation today is often provided in the person's home, there is a need to develop new models that consider the rehabilitation process as situated in the everyday living environment of persons with stroke. This project is grounded in experiences from our ongoing research, where we study the importance of the home environment for health and participation among persons with stroke, rehabilitated at home. This research has shown unmet needs, which lead to suboptimal rehabilitation outcomes. There is a need for studies on how to use environmental resources to optimize stroke rehabilitation in the home setting. OBJECTIVE The overarching objective of the project is to develop a new practice model for rehabilitation where the needs of the person are the starting point and where the environment is considered. METHODS The project will be conducted in partnership with persons with stroke, significant others, health care professionals, and care managers. Results from a literature review will form the base for interviews with the stakeholders, followed by co-designing workshops aiming to create a new practice model. Focus groups will be held to refine the outcome of the workshops to a practice model. RESULTS This 4-year project commenced in January 2023 and will continue until December 2026. The results of the literature review are, as of April 2024, currently being analyzed. The ethics application for the interviews and co-design phase was approved in October 2023 and data collection is ongoing during spring 2024. We aim to develop a practice model with stakeholders and refine it together with care managers and decision makers. The outcome is a new practice model and implementation plan, which will be achieved in autumn 2026. CONCLUSIONS The project contributes with a prominent missing puzzle to optimize the rehabilitation process by adding a strong focus on user engagement combined with integrating different aspects of the environment. The goal is to improve quality of life and increase reintegration in society for the large group of people living with the aftermath of a stroke. By co-designing with multiple stakeholders, we expect the model to be feasible and sustainable. The knowledge from the project will also contribute to an increased awareness of the importance of the physical environment for sustainable health care. Abstract
Background The Chinese government proposes to establish a hierarchical diagnosis and treatment system, and attaches great importance to community health services. Under the background of population aging and the increase of older adults with disability, this study aimed to analyze the effect of spatial accessibility of community health services on the activities of daily living (ADL) among older adults in China. Methods A research sample of 7,922 older adults from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) data in 2018 was adopted. There were 2,806 participants in the treatment group and 5,116 participants in the control group. The propensity score matching method was adopted to match the treatment and control groups to calculate the values of average treatment effects on treated (ATT). Results The results of kernel density matching method showed that the factual ADL score of the treatment group was 10.912, the counterfactual ADL score of the control group was 10.694, and the ATT value was 0.218 (p < 0.01). The spatial accessibility of community health services could significantly improve the activities of daily living among older adults in China. Meanwhile, there was urban-rural heterogeneity in the impact of spatial accessibility of community health services on the activities of daily living of older adults in China. The effect value in urban samples (ATT = 0.371, p < 0.01) was higher than that in rural samples (ATT = 0.180, p < 0.01). Conclusion Spatial accessibility of community health services could improve the activities of daily living among older adults in China. The Chinese government should take actions to improve the distribution of community health service resources.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore if aspects of the physical home environment are related to rehabilitation outcomes among community-living persons poststroke. BACKGROUND Research demonstrates that healthcare environments are important for high-quality care and that the design of the physical environment is associated with improved rehabilitation outcomes. However, relevant research focusing on outpatient care settings, such as the home, is sparse. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, data on rehabilitation outcomes, physical environmental barriers, and housing accessibility problems were collected during home visits of participants (N = 34), 3 months poststroke. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. RESULTS Few participants had adapted their homes, and the relevance of the physical environment was not always discussed with the patient during discharge from the hospital. Accessibility problems were associated with suboptimal rehabilitation outcomes such as worse perceived health and recovery after stroke. Activities most restricted by barriers in the home concerned hand and arm use. Participants who reported one or more falls at home tended to live in houses with more accessibility problems. Perceived supportive home environments were associated with more accessible dwellings. CONCLUSIONS Many face problems adapting their home environments poststroke, and our findings highlight unmet needs that should be considered in the rehabilitation practice. These findings could be used by architectural planners and health practitioners for more effective housing planning and inclusive environments.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is mainly managed by pharmacological therapy (e.g., Benserazide and dopamine agonists). However, prolonged use of these drugs would gradually diminish their dopaminergic effect. Gut dysbiosis was observed in some patients with PD, suggesting close association between the gut microbiome and PD. Probiotics modulate the host's gut microbiota beneficially. A 3-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted to investigate the beneficial effect of probiotic co-administration in patients with PD. Eighty-two PD patients were recruited and randomly divided into probiotic [n = 48; Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Probio-M8 (Probio-M8), Benserazide, dopamine agonists] and placebo (n = 34; placebo, Benserazide, dopamine agonists) groups. Finally, 45 and 29 patients from Probio-M8 and placebo groups provided complete fecal and serum samples for further omics analysis, respectively. The results showed that Probio-M8 co-administration conferred added benefits by improving sleep quality, alleviating anxiety, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Metagenomic analysis showed that, after the intervention, there were significantly more species-level genome bins (SGBs) of Bifidobacterium animalis, Ruminococcaceae, and Lachnospira, while less Lactobacillus fermentum and Klebsiella oxytoca in Probio-M8 group (P < 0.05). Interestingly, Lactobacillus fermentum correlated positively with the scores of UPDRS-III, HAMA, HAMD-17, and negatively with MMSE. Klebsiella oxytoca correlated negatively with feces hardness. Moreover, co-administering Probio-M8 increased SGBs involved in tryptophan degradation, gamma-aminobutyric acid, short-chain fatty acids, and secondary bile acid biosynthesis, as well as serum acetic acid and dopamine levels (P < 0.05). Taken together, Probio-M8 synergized with the conventional regimen and strengthened the clinical efficacy in managing PD, accompanied by modifications of the host's gut microbiome, gut microbial metabolic potential, and serum metabolites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS There is evidence that housing issues are associated with health outcomes as people age, but little is known in this respect regarding the specific population of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). The objective of this literature review was to identify and analyze the knowledge gap concerning people with PD and housing issues. METHODS Applying established guidelines for scoping reviews, a systematic literature search was done in relevant databases applying the following inclusion criteria: empirical studies including human participants with PD, addressing housing in the objective, hypothesis or research questions, and published in English in peer-reviewed journals. Data were analyzed using a framework of domains, factors, and variables influencing housing decisions among older people. RESULTS Twelve publications were identified, originating from a few researchers and with very different scopes. While the social dimension was scarcely attended to, the publications addressed all six domains of the analytical framework and 30% of the variables specified therein, but many were only used for descriptive purposes. CONCLUSION This scoping review reveals that there is a substantial knowledge gap regarding people with PD and housing issues. The knowledge gap is most evident in the social dimension, while the studies identified provide more information relating to the health dimension than what is the case in research on housing targeting the general aging population. Because society urgently needs evidence to support the development of housing policies and provide suitable housing for this vulnerable population, more research targeting people with PD and housing issues is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While housing and neighborhood features have the potential to impact opportunities for active aging, there is a lack of knowledge related to how older people reason regarding their housing situation and how housing and fulfillment of relocation are associated with active and healthy aging. OBJECTIVE The objectives of Prospective RELOC-AGE are to study housing choices and relocation and explore effects on active and healthy aging among men and women aged 55 years and older in Sweden considering relocation. METHODS The estimated sample (2800) will include people aged 55 years and older being listed for relocation at either of two housing companies: a local public housing company in Southern Sweden and a national condominium provider. Prospective RELOC-AGE has a 2-level longitudinal mixed methods design and includes quantitative surveys (implemented by a professional survey company) and a telephone interview for baseline data collection in 2021, with follow-ups with the same procedures in 2022 and 2023. The survey and interviews include questions related to present housing and neighborhood, relocation plans and expectations, a range of perspectives on active and healthy aging, and demographics. Linking to national registers will provide additional data on home help and health care use, objective housing, and neighborhood characteristics. To explore what housing attributes older adults considering relocation find important and to what extent when making their decisions on housing, we will develop a discrete choice experiment to be implemented with a subsample of participants. Further, a grounded theory approach will be applied to collect in-depth interview data from participants who have moved to another dwelling, within 6 months of the move. A follow-up interview 12 months later will focus on participants' deepened experience over time in terms of fulfilled expectations and relocation experiences. RESULTS As of submission of this protocol (June 2021), recruitment has commenced with approximately 960 respondents to the survey and ongoing telephone interviews. We anticipate recruitment and data collection based on surveys and interviews to continue during 2021. CONCLUSIONS Prospective RELOC-AGE has the capacity to generate new policy-relevant knowledge on associations of housing, relocation, and active and healthy aging. Such knowledge is relevant for the development of proactive approaches to housing in old age on the individual, group, and societal levels. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate one-year changes and differences in changes in activities of daily living (ADL), usability, a history of falls, concerns about falling, and self-rated health across five housing adaptation (HA) client profiles identified previously using a cluster analysis approach: older adults with low level of disability (n = 59); older adults with medium/high level of disability (n = 26); adults with low level of disability (n = 10); adults with high level of disability (n = 8); and older adults with medium level of disability including at least moderate cognitive impairment (n = 5). Comparisons between the five profiles include secondary analyses aggregating those with low level of disability and those with medium/high level of disability. Changes within the client profiles demonstrate a complex pattern of improvements and declines, depending on outcome, with no profile showing consistent improvement or decline across all outcomes. The risks of deterioration over one year were the highest among those with cognitive impairments at baseline, but no recommendation of prioritization decisions based on baseline profiles can be made. Instead, it seems that all HA clients, independently of baseline profile, are at risk of increasing disability over time and require follow-up evaluations regularly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Housing plays an important role in the aging process and health. The house and its nearby environment host most of the daily activities of older adults. Residential satisfaction (RS) has been relegated to physical issues such as accessibility. However, RS is also constituted by older adults' perceptions about housing. This study analyzes the perceived home that develops RS in older adults. METHODS A random sample of 714 participants aged 50 to 84 (mean = 65; SD = 0.98) were used. Participants lived in ordinary housing in southern Spain. Scales measure perceptions of RS, meaning, functionality and belief of control over the home. RESULTS Analyses were performed using structural equation models to evaluate the dependence relationships between the different perceptions evaluated. We observe a direct influence of internal control on usability (β = 0.84) and perceived meanings (β = 0.49). However, external control shows a negative influence on the meaning of home (β = -0.14). Perceived usability (β = 0.68) and meaning (β = 0.32) positively influence RS. CONCLUSION Perceptions of meaning, functionality and RS itself depend on internal housing-related control beliefs. Active older adults with higher internal control perceived their home fit better to the need of everyday life and improve RS.
