Abstract
This single-center cross-sectional study used sequential sampling to examine the influence of body mass index (BMI) on oral function after oral cancer treatment. Patients who completed primary oral cancer treatment between September 2019 and March 2023 (102 patients, 74 male [72.5%] and 28 female [27.5%]; mean age, 69.6 years) were analyzed. Patient background data were collected from electronic medical records. Post-treatment oral function measurements were conducted on all patients using six assessment tools. Statistical analysis was conducted using Pearson's correlation coefficient, one-way analysis of variance, the Jonckheere-Terpstra test, and multiple linear regression. Pre-treatment BMI showed a statistically significant relationship with postoperative oral function, particularly tongue pressure (P = 0.01). While the mean values of the groups showed no significant differences, the Jonckheere-Terpstra test revealed a statistically significant trend toward a stepwise increase in tongue pressure for each BMI group (P = 0.03). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation between tongue pressure and pre-treatment BMI (P < 0.05). Pre-treatment BMI was significantly associated with tongue pressure. Since BMI is a variable factor that can be controlled by nutritional therapy even before treatment, nutritional intervention, weight control, and treatment strategies including reconstructive interventions to maintain tongue pressure may be important in oral cancer treatment.

Abstract
Aim: To investigate the systemic immune-inflammation index and prognostic immune nutritional index in the prognostic evaluation of oral squamous cell carcinoma.Materials & methods: We analyzed retrospectively the relationship between systemic immune-inflammation index, prognostic immune nutritional index and clinicopathological variables and the overall survival of 262 patients who underwent radical surgery.Results: Multivariate analysis showed high systemic immune-inflammation index (Hazard ratio = 3.062, 95% CI: 1.021-8.251), low prognostic immune nutritional index (Hazard ratio = 0.297, 95% CI: 0.139-0.636), tumor node metastasis classification 3-4 (Hazard ratio = 9.862, 95% CI: 4.658-20.880) patients have worse overall survival.Conclusion: Preoperative systemic immune-inflammation index and prognostic immune nutritional index are independent risk factors for prognostic survival status in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are widely adapted for recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer (RM-HNC), and various studies on its prognostic factors have been reported. We aimed to elucidate the prognostic factors of ICI treatment for RM oral cancer (RM-OC) in a retrospective study. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed patients with RM-OC treated with ICIs (nivolumab and pembrolizumab) at our department from May 2017 to February 2023. The objective response rate (ORR) for ICI treatment and the relationship between several potential prognostic factors, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were analyzed statistically. RESULTS The investigation enrolled 31 patients, 16 with nivolumab and 15 with pembrolizumab. There were no significant differences in the ORR or disease control rate between the nivolumab and pembrolizumab groups (p = 0.4578 and 0.2524). In multivariate analysis, the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) exhibited statistical correlations with PFS, whereas the use of antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and PNI demonstrated statistical associations with OS. CONCLUSION Our findings imply that the use of antibiotics and PPIs, which can modify the gut microbiota, may also serve as a prognostic determinant for ICI treatment in RM-OC, consistent with previous studies. Additionally, PNI may be essential in affecting the survival rates of both PFS and OS and could be an exceedingly valuable inflammatory biomarker for RM-OC.

Abstract
We conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess the potential prognostic utility of geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) for head and neck cancer (HNC). We selected studies and extracted data after searching the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed databases. The associations between GNRI and survival outcomes were explored by calculating hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through a random-effects meta-analysis. We included 11 studies that involved 2887 patients with HNC. The combined HR demonstrated significant associations of low GNRI with unfavorable progression-free survival (HR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.32-2.65, p < 0.001) and overall survival (HR = 3.04, 95% CI = 2.30-4.03, p < 0.001). The association between the GNRI and overall survival persisted across various subgroups. The GNRI could serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker for patients with HNC. Low GNRI scores are significantly associated with unfavorable survival outcomes.

Abstract
Background Several studies have investigated the relationship between serum lactate dehydrogenase-to-albumin ratio (LAR) and the prognosis of cancers. However, no studies have explored the association between serum LAR and the survival of oral cancer (OC). This study was aimed to determine the association of serum LAR with the overall survival (OS) of OC. Methods One hundred and ninety patients with OC were included in this study between January 2018 and December 2019. Log rank test and Kaplan-Meier method were used to compare the survival rate of OC between the low LAR group and the high LAR group. The association between serum LAR and the survival of OC patients was determined via univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Results Kaplan-Meier analysis and Log rank test indicated that the OS rate in low LAR group was significantly higher than that in high LAR group (P < 0.05). Univariate cox analysis showed that TNM III-IV stage, serum LDH > 162 U/L, and serum LAR > 3.79 were significantly associated with the OS of OC patients. Multivariate Cox analysis suggested that the TNM III-IV stage (HR, 2.317; 95% CI, 1.423-3.774, P = 0.001) and serum LAR > 3.79 (HR, 5.138; 95% CI, 2.245-11.756, P = 0.000) were independently related with poor OS of OC patients. Conclusion High serum LAR (>3.79) is an independent predictor of adverse prognosis in OC patients. LAR could be used as a promising marker for predicting the OS of OC patients.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of different chronic diseases with immunonutritional markers in the senior population. METHODS this study included 1190 hospitalized geriatric patients. The criteria to participate were ability to communicate, given consent and C-reactive protein (CRP) lower than 6 mg/dL. RESULTS the mean age of the study population was 81.7 ± 7.6 years. NLR (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio), LMR (lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio), MWR (monocyte-to-white blood cell ratio), SII (systemic immune-inflammation index), PNI (prognostic nutritional index) and CAR (C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio) were related to age. NLR and MWR were higher, while LMR, PLR (platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and SII were lower in men. All markers were related to BMI. NLR, LMR, LCR (lymphocyte-to-CRP ratio), MWR, PNI and CAR were related to several concomitant chronic diseases. In multivariate analyses, age and BMI were selected as independent predictors of all studied immunonutritional markers. Atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus and dementia appear most often in the models. PNI presented the most consistent statistical association with age, BMI and concomitant chronic diseases. CONCLUSIONS this study reveals the pivotal role of aging and BMI in inflammatory marker levels and the association of immunonutritional markers with different chronic diseases. Atrial fibrillation seems to have the most dominant connection to the immunonutritional markers.

Abstract
We probed the associations of preoperative modified geriatric nutritional risk index (mGNRI) values with prognosis in patients receiving surgery for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). This retrospective study analyzed the clinical data of 333 patients with OCSCC and undergoing surgery between 2008 and 2017. The preoperative mGNRI was calculated using the following formula: (14.89/C-reactive protein level) + 41.7 × (actual body weight/ideal body weight). We executed receiver operating characteristic curve analyses to derive the optimal mGNRI cutoff and employed Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazard model to probe the associations of the mGNRI with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The optimal mGNRI cutoff was derived to be 73.3. We noted the 5-year OS and DFS rates to be significantly higher in the high-mGNRI group than in the low-mGNRI group (both p < 0.001). A preoperative mGNRI below 73.3 was independently associated with unfavorable DFS and OS. A mGNRI-based nomogram was constructed to provide accurate OS predictions (concordance index, 0.781). Hence, preoperative mGNRI is a valuable and cost-effective prognostic biomarker in patients with OCSCC. Our nomogram facilitates the practical use of mGNRI and offers individualized predictions of OS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insufficient evidence existed about the prognostic role of the advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) for gastric cancer patients who underwent curative resection. The aim of this study was to identify the predictive ability of ALI for survival after curative gastrectomy. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 328 gastric cancer patients who received curative gastrectomy from the database of Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, and investigated the prognostic role of the preoperative ALI compared with clinicopathological variables and other serum biomarkers, such as preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and Lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR). To minimize intergroup differences, propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was employed. Additionally, we performed a meta-analysis of four cohort studies published up to October 2023 following the PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS In the overall cohort, patients in the low ALI group had a significantly worse overall survival compared to those in the high ALI group (P < 0.0001). Subgroup analysis identified that ALI maintained its prognostic significance across different subgroups. In addition, ROC analysis showed that ALI had a higher AUC value for 3-year overall survival compared to NLR, PLR, and LMR (0.576 vs. 0.573 vs. 0.557 vs. 0.557). Multivariate analysis indicated that ALI, other than other serum biomarkers, was an independent risk factor for decreased overall survival in GC patients following curative surgery (HR = 1.449; 95%CI: 1.028-2.045; P = 0.034). Consistently, PSM analysis supported all of these findings. The meta-analysis including 4 studies evaluating 2542 patients, confirmed the association between the low ALI and poor survival outcomes. CONCLUSION The preoperative ALI was an independent prognostic factor for survival in gastric cancer patients who underwent curative gastrectomy.

Abstract
Previous studies indicated that adipose tissue significantly influences cancer invasion and lymphatic metastasis. However, the impact of neck adipose tissue (NAT) on lymph node metastasis associated with head and neck cancer remains ambiguous. Here, we systematically assess the classification and measurement criteria of NAT and evaluate the association of adipose tissue and cancer-associated adipocytes with head and neck cancer. We delve into the potential mechanisms by which NAT facilitate cervical lymph node metastasis in head and neck cancer, particularly through the secretion of adipokines such as leptin, adiponectin, and Interleukin-6. Our aim is to elucidate the role of NAT in the progression and metastasis of head and neck cancer, offering new insights into prevention and treatment.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the effect of individualized enteral nutrition management based on the prognostic nutrition index (PNI) on surgical patients with oral malignancies. This quasi-experimental pilot study consecutively included patients diagnosed with oral malignancies who underwent radical surgery in Ningbo No. 2 Hospital between January 2020 and May 2023. The primary outcome was PNI. A total of 71 patients with oral malignancies were enrolled, and 35 patients received PNI-based individualized enteral nutrition management. The PNI group displayed significantly higher PNI than the routine enteral nutrition support group (1st week postoperatively: 39.86 ± 3.86 vs. 37.29 ± 4.23, p < 0.001. 2nd weeks postoperatively: 44.17 ± 4.36 vs. 40.72 ± 3.40, p < 0.001). The surgical suture removal time and length of hospital stay (both p < 0.001) in the PNI group were significantly shorter than in the routine enteral nutrition support group. At 1 month postoperatively, the PNI group had significantly higher scores of QoL (p = 0.002) than the routine enteral nutrition support group. The individualized enteral nutrition management based on the PNI could improve the nutritional status of postoperative patients with oral malignancy, which could facilitate postoperative rehabilitation and improve overall QoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum biomarkers have a significant impact on the prediction of treatment outcomes in patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The primary aim of this study was to develop and validate a nomogram that incorporates hemoglobin, albumin, and globulin ratio (HAGR) and clinical data to accurately forecast treatment outcomes in patients with NPC. METHODS A total of 796 patients diagnosed with NPC were included in the study. RESULTS The results of the multivariate Cox analysis revealed that TNM stage and HAGR were found to be significant independent prognostic factors for OS and PFS. Furthermore, the utilization of the nomogram demonstrated a significant improvement in the evaluation of OS, PFS compared with the eighth TNM staging system. Additionally, the implementation of Kaplan-Meier curves and decision curve analysis curves further confirmed the discriminability and clinical effectiveness of the nomogram. CONCLUSIONS The HAGR, an innovative prognostic factor grounded in the realm of immunonutrition, has emerged as a promising prognostic marker for both OS and PFS in individuals afflicted with NPC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common of head and neck malignancies in well-developed countries. In most cases, patients with OSCC experience a degree of nutritional status disturbances and decreased quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to compare nutritional status and QoL in 51 patients before and after surgery for OSCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-one eligible patients with OSCC were followed during a 3-year period (2019-2022). For all patients, we determined body mass index (BMI), serum albumin (ALB), prognostic nutritional index, and nutritional risk index before and after treatment. Also, all patients completed a standardized QoL questionnaire before and after treatment. The obtained data were compared between the groups by using the t test and multivariate Cox regression. RESULTS The values of BMI and NRI were statistically significantly different between the preoperative and postoperative measurements (24.1 kg/m² vs 21.1 kg/m², and 103 vs 100.1, respectively, P=0.001), while values of ALB and prognostic nutritional index did not differ significantly (41.35 g/L vs 39.1 g/L, and 48.5 vs 46.2, respectively). Dysphagia (P=0.03) and chewing problems (P=0.04) were found to be the 2 most important factors decreasing the QoL of patients. CONCLUSIONS Based on our results, BMI and NRI were the most sensitive parameters of nutritional status. Dysphagia and chewing problems were the 2 most important factors affecting the QoL in patients with OSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Identifying the association between body mass index (BMI) or weight change and cancer prognosis is essential for the development of effective cancer treatments. We aimed to assess the strength and validity of the evidence of the association between BMI or weight change and cancer prognosis by a systematic evaluation and meta-analysis of relevant cohort studies. METHODS We systematically searched the PubMed, Web of Science, EconLit, Embase, Food Sciences and Technology Abstracts, PsycINFO, and Cochrane databases for literature published up to July 2023. Inclusion criteria were cohort studies with BMI or weight change as an exposure factor, cancer as a diagnostic outcome, and data type as an unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) or headcount ratio. Random- or fixed-effects models were used to calculate the pooled HR along with the 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Seventy-three cohort studies were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with normal weight, overweight or obesity was a risk factor for overall survival (OS) in patients with breast cancer (HR 1.37, 95% CI 1.22-1.53; P < 0.0001), while obesity was a protective factor for OS in patients with gastrointestinal tumors (HR 0.67, 95% CI 0.56-0.80; P < 0.0001) and lung cancer (HR 0.67, 95% CI 0.48-0.92; P = 0.01) compared with patients without obesity. Compared with normal weight, underweight was a risk factor for OS in patients with breast cancer (HR 1.15, 95% CI 0.98-1.35; P = 0.08), gastrointestinal tumors (HR 1.54, 95% CI 1.32-1.80; P < 0.0001), and lung cancer (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.22-1.35; P < 0.0001). Compared with nonweight change, weight loss was a risk factor for OS in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of the meta-analysis, we concluded that BMI, weight change, and tumor prognosis were significantly correlated. These findings may provide a more reliable argument for the development of more effective oncology treatment protocols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore the prognostic utility of the preoperative platelet-to-albumin ratio (PAR) among patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed of 355 patients with surgically-treated OSCC between 2008 and 2017. The optimal PAR cutoff for patient stratification was determined through X-tile analysis. Prognostic variables for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were identified using Cox proportional hazards models. We developed a PAR-based nomogram to predict personalized OS. RESULTS We determined the optimal PAR cutoff to be 7.45. A PAR of ≥7.45 was an independent negative prognostic factor for DFS and OS (hazard ratio = 1.748 and 2.386; p = 0.005 and p < 0.001, respectively). The developed nomogram demonstrates the practical utility of PAR and accurately predicts personalized OS. CONCLUSIONS The preoperative PAR is a promising and cost-effective prognostic biomarker for patients with surgically-treated OSCC; the PAR-based nanogram accurately predicts OS for such patients.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a prevalent and aggressive form of cancer with high mortality rates and significant implications for nutritional status. Accurate assessment of malnutrition in patients with HNC is crucial for optimizing treatment outcomes and improving survival rates. This study aimed to evaluate the use of ultrasound techniques for predicting nutritional status, malnutrition, and cancer outcomes in patients with HNC. A total of 494 patients with HNC were included in this cross-sectional observational study. Various tools and body composition measurements, including muscle mass and adipose tissue ultrasound evaluations, were implemented. Using regression models, we mainly found that high levels of RF-CSA (rectus femoris cross-sectional area) were associated with a decreased risk of malnutrition (as defined with GLIM criteria (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.68-0.98); as defined with PG-SGA (OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.62-0.98)) and sarcopenia (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.49-0.82) after being adjusted for age, sex, and BMI. To predict the importance of muscle mass ultrasound variables on the risk of mortality, a nomogram, a random forest, and decision tree models were conducted. RF-CSA was the most important variable under the random forest model. The obtained C-index for the nomogram was 0.704, and the Brier score was 16.8. With an RF-CSA < 2.7 (AUC of 0.653 (0.59-0.77)) as a split, the decision tree model classified up to 68% of patients as possessing a high probability of survival. According to the cut-off value of 2.7 cm2, patients with a low RF-CSA value lower than 2.7 cm2 had worse survival rates (p < 0.001). The findings of this study highlight the importance of implementing ultrasound tools, for accurate diagnoses and monitoring of malnutrition in patients with HNC. Adipose tissue ultrasound measurements were only weakly associated with malnutrition and not with sarcopenia, indicating that muscle mass is a more important indicator of overall health and nutritional status. These results have the potential to improve survival rates and quality of life by enabling early intervention and personalized nutritional management.

Abstract
PURPOSE This retrospective cohort study was to assess the prognostic value of preoperative geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) on survival outcomes for patients with locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (LAOSCC). METHODS Patients with LAOSCC receiving upfront radical surgery at a single institute from January 2007 to February 2017 were enrolled. The primary outcomes in the study were 5-year overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates, and a nomogram based on GNRI and other clinical-pathological factors was established for individualized OS prediction. RESULTS There were 343 patients enrolled in this study. The optimal cut-off value of GNRI was observed to be 97.8. Patients in the high-GNRI group (GNRI ≥97.8) had statistically significantly better outcomes in 5-year OS (74.7% vs. 57.2%, p = 0.001) and CSS (82.2% vs. 68.9%, p = 0.005) when compared with the low-GNRI group (GNRI <97.8). In Cox models, low GNRI remained an independent negative prognosticator of OS (HR: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.124-2.277; p = 0.009) and CSS (HR: 1.907; 95% CI: 1.219-2.984; p = 0.005). The c-index of the proposed nomogram, incorporating assorted clinicopathological factors and GNRI, had a statistically significant increase compared with the predictive nomogram constructed by the TNM staging system alone (0.692 vs. 0.637, p < 0.001)." CONCLUSION Preoperative GNRI is an independent prognostic factor of OS and CSS in patients with LAOSCC. A multivariate nomogram that includes GNRI may better help us to accurately estimate individual survival outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the association between salivary matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and clinicopathological parameters of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and compare the prognostic efficacy of salivary MMP-1 and other established circulating markers for OSCC. Methods Saliva specimens from 479 OSCC subjects were examined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The area under the curve (AUC) values of salivary MMP-1 and other markers were calculated, and survival analyses were conducted using Kaplan-Meier and multivariate regression methods. Results Salivary MMP-1 showed good discrimination in predicting overall survival, with an AUC of 0.638, which was significantly higher than that of albumin (0.530, p = .021) and Charlson comorbidity index (0.568, p = .048) and comparable with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (0.620, p = .987), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (0.575, p = .125), and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (0.609, p = .605). Elevated levels of salivary MMP-1 were significantly associated with higher pT classification, pN classification, overall pathological stage, positive extranodal extension, tumor differentiation, positive lymphovascular invasion, positive perineural invasion, and tumor depth (p all <.05). Multivariate analyses indicated that a higher level of salivary MMP-1 (≥2060.0 pg/mL) was an independent predictive factor of poorer overall survival (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.421 [95% confidential interval: 1.014-1.989], p = .041). Conclusion The study found that the salivary MMP-1 level was significantly associated with many adverse clinicopathological parameters of OSCC. In OSCC, it was found to have superior efficacy in predicting prognosis and was an independent prognostic factor of post-treatment outcome. Level of evidence 3.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of preoperative neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NAR) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS A total of 622 patients with surgically treated OSCC were enrolled. NAR was defined as the absolute neutrophil count divided by the serum albumin level in peripheral blood before the radical surgery. Cox proportional hazards model were used to discover survival outcome-associated factors. RESULTS The optimal cut-off of NAR to predict overall survival (OS) was determined to be 0.1. In Cox model, high NAR was identified as an independent negative prognosticator of OS, cancer-specific survival, and recurrence-free survival (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.503, 1.958, and 1.727, respectively; all p < 0.05). The NAR-based nomogram accurately predicted OS (concordance index: 0.750). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that preoperative NAR is a convenient and effective prognostic marker for OSCC and NAR-based nomogram can be a promising prognostic tool in clinical setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The factors associated with postoperative hypokalemia in patients with oral cancer remain unclear. We determined the preoperative factors associated with postoperative hypokalemia in patients with oral cancer following en bloc cancer resection and established a nomogram for postoperative hypokalemia prediction. METHODS Data from 381 patients with oral cancer who underwent en bloc cancer resection were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the risk factors for postoperative hypokalemia. We used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to quantify the factors' effectiveness. A nomogram was created to show each predictor's relative weight and the likelihood of postoperative hypokalemia development. The multinomial regression model's effectiveness was also evaluated. RESULTS Preoperative factors, including sex, preoperative serum potassium level, and preoperative platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), were significantly associated with postoperative hypokalemia. Based on the ROC curve, the preoperative serum potassium and PLR cut-off levels were 3.98 mmol/L and 117, respectively. Further multivariate analysis indicated that female sex, preoperative serum potassium level < 3.98 mmol/L, and preoperative PLR ≥ 117 were independently associated with postoperative hypokalemia. We constructed a predictive nomogram with all these factors for the risk of postoperative hypokalemia with good discrimination and internal validation. CONCLUSIONS The predictive nomogram for postoperative hypokalemia risk constructed with these factors had good discrimination and internal validation. The developed nomogram will add value to these independent risk factors that can be identified at admission in order to predict postoperative hypokalemia.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the prognostic value of common clinical inflammatory and nutritional indicators before treatment in patients with non-small cell lung cancer in the real world. Method A total of 5,239 patients with pathologically confirmed non-small cell lung cancer from 2011 to 2018 in the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University were selected. Their inflammatory and nutritional indicators (RDW, PDW, NLR, LMR, NMR, PLR, SII, PNI, TP, ALB, CYRFA21-1, CEA, CA125, NSE, α1-globulin, α2-globulin, β1-globulin, β2-globulin, and γ-globulin) before treatment were collected. From the total number, 1,049 patients were randomly sampled (18 to 20% of patients each year) and used as the validation set; the remaining 4,190 patients were used as the training set. According to the eighth edition of the guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and stage risk stratification of lung cancer, the patients were divided into four groups: stage I/II operable, stage III operable, stage III inoperable, and stage IV. We used the X-tile software to intercept and classify the cut-off values of each index in the validation set. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional-hazard regression were used to screen the independent risk factors affecting the prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer and establish a prognostic model for 1, 3, and 5 years. The validation set was used to verify its performance. Finally, the Kaplan-Meier curve was used to assess the survival rate, and the corresponding nomogram was established for clinical use. Results After screening, no effective indicators were found in the stage I/II operable group. RDW and CA125 were effective indicators for the stage III operable group (cut-off values were 14.1 and 9.21, respectively, compared with the low-value group; univariate HR was 2.145 and 1.612, and multivariate HR was 1.491 and 1.691, respectively). CYRFA21-1 and CA125 were effective prognostic indicators for the stage III inoperable group (cut-off values were 10.62 and 44.10, respectively, compared with the low-value group; univariate HR was 1.744 and 1.342, and multivariate HR was 1.284 and 1.304, respectively). CYRFA21-1, CA125, NLR, and α1-globulin were effective indicators of prognosis in stage IV (cut-off values were 3.07, 69.60, 4.08, and 5.30, respectively, compared with the low-value group; univariate HR was 1.713, 1.339, 1.388, and 1.539; and multivariate HR was 1.407, 1.119, 1.191, and 1.110, respectively). The model was constructed with the best validation power in stage IV patients (C-index = 0.733, 0.749, and 0.75 at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively). Conclusion For patients with stage III and IV non-small cell lung cancer, some inflammatory markers, serum tumor markers, and nutritional indicators are independent prognostic factors. Combined with the general data of patients, the constructed prognostic evaluation model has the best efficacy in patients with stage IV and can be widely used in clinical practice.

Abstract
Introduction We aimed to investigate the nutritional risk status and dynamic changes in patients with perioperative oral cancer at different stages and analyze the factors influencing nutritional risk and the correlation among body mass index, nutrition-related symptoms, and nutritional risk. Methods In total, 198 patients with oral cancer who were hospitalized in the Head & Neck Surgery Departments of a tertiary cancer hospital in Hunan Province, China, from May 2020 to January 2021, were selected as participants. The Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 scale and Head and Neck Patient Symptom Checklist were used to assess patients on admission day, 7 days post-surgery, and 1 month post-discharge. Multivariate analysis of variance, paired t-test, and generalized estimating equation were used to analyze the trajectory and influencing factors of nutritional risk in patients with perioperative oral cancer. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation among body mass index, symptoms, and nutritional risk. Results The nutritional risk scores of patients with oral cancer at the three time points were 2.30 ± 0.84, 3.21 ± 0.94, and 2.11 ± 0.84, respectively, and the differences were significant (p < 0.05). The incidences of nutritional risk were 30.3, 52.5, and 37.9%, respectively. The factors influencing nutritional risk included education level, smoking status, clinical stage, flap repair, and tracheotomy (β = -0.326, 0.386, 0.387, 0.336, and 0.240, respectively, p < 0.05). Nutritional risk was negatively correlated with body mass index (rs = -0.455, p < 0.01) and positively correlated with pain, loss of appetite, sore mouth, bothersome smells, swallowing difficulty, taste changes, depression, chewing difficulty, thick saliva, and anxiety (rs = 0.252, 0.179, 0.269, 0.155, 0.252, 0.212, 0.244, 0.384, 0.260, and 0.157, respectively, p < 0.05). Conclusion The incidence of nutritional risk in patients with perioperative oral cancer was high, and the trajectory of nutritional risk changed over time. Strengthening the nutritional monitoring and management of postoperative patients or those with low education level, advanced-stage cancer, flap repair, tracheotomy, and low body mass index; strengthening tobacco control management; and controlling nutrition-related discomfort symptoms in perioperative oral cancer patients are necessary.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the prognostic value of pre-treatment prognostic-nutritional index (PNI) in patients with HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods A multi-institutional retrospective series of HPV-negative, Stages II-IVB, HNSCCs treated with upfront surgery was evaluated. Correlation of pre-operative blood markers and PNI with 5-year overall (OS) and relapse-free (RFS) survival was tested using linear and restricted cubic spline models, as appropriate. The independent prognostic effect of patient-related features was assessed with multivariable models. Results The analysis was conducted on 542 patients. PNI ≥ 49.6 (HR = 0.52; 95% CI, 0.37-0.74) and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) > 4.2 (HR = 1.58; 95% CI, 1.06-2.35) confirmed to be independent prognosticators of OS, whereas only PNI ≥ 49.6 (HR = 0.44; 95% CI, 0.29-0.66) was independently associated with RFS. Among pre-operative blood parameters, only higher values of albuninaemia and lymphocyte count (> 1.08 x 103/microL), and undetectable basophile count (= 0 103/microL) were independently associated with better OS and RFS. Conclusions PNI represents a reliable prognostic tool providing an independent measure of pre-operative immuno-metabolic performance. Its validity is supported by the independent prognostic role of albuminaemia and lymphocyte count, from which it is derived.

Abstract
PURPOSE As the incidence of oral cancers is on the rise, we aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) as a predictor of survival in patients with terminal oral cancer. METHODS We evaluated the association between laboratory and PNI values and survival days in 33 patients who died of oral cancer between 2004 and 2019 ,excluding 4 patients who underwent gastric banding out of 39with gastric banding. The observation period was from the date of palliative care recommendation to the date of death. RESULTS A significant difference was observed between the PNI values recorded 3 months before death and those recorded 1 month before death (37.99 ± 6.50 vs 28.86 ± 6.01; P<.05). The median PNI value was associated with the timing of supportive care start and survival (days). CONCLUSION This study revealed that PNI values decreased toward the end of life and correlated with survival (days), independent of patient characteristics. These findings suggest that the PNI may be useful in the prognostication of end-stage oral cancer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The potential association between severe postoperative complications (SPC) and the oncological outcomes of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients according to the different Naples Prognostic Score (NPS) of the inflammatory nutritional status after minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) is unclear. METHODS Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to evaluate overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between with or without SPC (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ III) in low NPS status (NPS = 0 or 1) and high NPS status (NPS = 2 or 3 or 4) patients. Cox multivariable analysis was carried out to analyze the various independent factors of OS and DFS, and a nomogram based on SPC was established. RESULTS A total of 20.7% (125/604) ESCC patients developed SPC after MIE. Patients with SPC exhibited poor 5-year OS and DFS compared to those without SPC (all P < 0.001). Further analysis revealed that SPC significantly reduced OS and DFS in patients with high NPS status (all P < 0.001) but had little effect on the prognosis of patients with low NPS status (all P > 0.05). Multivariable Cox analysis revealed that SPC could be an independent influence indicator for OS and DFS in patients with high NPS status. Therefore, a novel nomogram combining SPC and tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging has been developed, which was found to be relatively more accurate in predicting OS and DFS than TNM staging alone. CONCLUSION Severe complications can adversely affect the long-term oncological outcome of ESCC patients with high systemic inflammatory response and malnutrition after MIE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Peripheral systemic inflammatory, nutritional, and coagulation biomarkers have prognostic and predictive value in various malignancies. We evaluated the prognostic and predictive roles of systemic inflammatory, nutritional, and coagulation biomarkers in the circulating blood of patients with advanced cervical cancer. METHODS A retrospective study of 795 patients with cervical cancer who received concurrent chemoradiation therapy was performed. Overall survival was evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier estimator. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to determine prognostic factors associated with overall survival. RESULTS The median follow-up time was 76 months. In the univariate analysis, overall survival showed positive prognostic value in patients with a platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) <164.29 (P = 0.010), and a plasma fibrinogen (FIB) level <4 g/L(P = 0.012). In the multivariate analysis, the PLR (P = 0.036), and FIB level (P = 0.047) maintained their significance for overall survival. Therefore, the PLR and FIB levels are independent prognostic factors in patients with advanced cervical cancer. CONCLUSIONS Systemic inflammatory and coagulation biomarkers could help to understand survival differences in the clinical treatment of advanced cervical cancer. The PLR and FIB levels are independent prognostic factors of poor survival in patients with advanced cervical cancer.

Abstract
Accumulating literature has explored how prognostically significant the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) was for the oral carcinoma population, but with inconsistent findings. Therefore, we retrieved the most recent data and carried out this meta-analysis to comprehensively analyze the prognostic performance of pretreatment PNI in oral cancer. The electronic databases of PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Cochrane Library and Web of Science were fully retrieved. PNI's prognostic value for survival outcomes in oral carcinoma was assessed by estimating pooled hazard ratios (HRs) plus 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We examined the correlation of PNI with clinicopathological traits of oral carcinoma by utilizing the pooled odds ratios (ORs) plus 95% CIs. According to the pooled results of the present meta-analysis, which enrolled 10 studies involving 3,130 patients, for oral carcinoma suffers whose PNI was low, their disease-free survival (DFS) (HR=1.92, 95%CI=1.53-2.42, p<0.001) and overall survival (OS) (HR=2.44, 95%CI=1.45-4.12, p=0.001) would be inferior. Nonetheless, cancer-specific survival (CSS) was not linked significantly to PNI for the oral carcinoma population (HR=1.89, 95%CI=0.61-5.84, p=0.267). Significant associations of low PNI with TNM stages III-IV (OR=2.16, 95%CI=1.60-2.91, p<0.001) and age ≥ 65 years (OR=2.29, 95%CI=1.76-2.98, p<0.001) were found. As suggested by the present meta-analysis, a low PNI was linked to inferior DFS and OS among oral carcinoma patients. Oral cancer patients with low PNI may have high-risk of tumor progression. PNI could be served as a promising and effective index to predict prognosis in patients with oral cancer.

Abstract
The association between the pretreatment body mass index (BMI) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) outcomes is controversial. We aimed to examine the association between BMI and cause-specific mortality due to cancer of the oral cavity and patterns of failure that correlate with increased mortality. We enrolled 2,023 East Asian patients in this multicenter cohort study. We used the cumulative incidence competing risks method and the Fine-Gray model to analyze factors associated with cause-specific mortality, local recurrence, regional metastasis, and distant metastasis as first events. The median follow-up period was 62 mo. The 5-year cause-specific mortality for patients with underweight was 25.7%, which was significantly higher than that for patients with normal weight (12.7%, P < 0.0001). The multivariate model revealed that underweight was an independent risk factor for cause-specific mortality and regional metastasis (P < 0.05). Moreover, patients with underweight displayed a 51% and 55% increased risk of cause-specific mortality and regional metastasis, respectively, compared with their normal weight counterparts. Local recurrence was not associated with the BMI categories; however, the incidence of distant metastasis inversely decreased with BMI value. In summary, being underweight at diagnosis should be considered a high-risk mortality factor for oral SCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nutritional risk index (NRI) is an excellent indicator of nutritional status and a significant prognostic factor in several malignancies, but the relationship between NRI and the prognosis of head and neck soft tissue sarcoma (HNSTS) patients remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NRI in patients with HNSTS. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed patients with HNSTS between 1990 and 2021. In order to determine the optimal cut-off value of NRI, the Maximally selected log-rank statistic was performed. We evaluated the effect of NRI on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) by using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis. Then, OS and PFS nomograms based on NRI were constructed. RESULTS In total, 436 HNSTS patients were included in this study. The optimal cut-off value of NRI was 99.34. Patients with low-NRI showed significantly worse OS and PFS than patients with high-NRI, respectively (5-year OS rate of 43.0 vs. 70.8%, 5-year PFS rate of 29.0 vs. 45.0%, all p < 0.05). In the multivariate analysis, distant metastasis, deep tumor depth, tumor grade, and NRI were prognostic factors for both PFS and OS, and treatment modality was associated with OS but not PFS. The concordance indexes (C-indexes) of OS and PFS nomograms were 0.794 (95% CI, 0.759-0.829) and 0.663 (95% CI, 0.626-0.700), respectively, which also performed well in the validation set. CONCLUSIONS NRI is an independent predictor of OS and PFS in HNSTS patients. The validated nomograms based on NRI provide useful predictions of OS and PFS for patients with HNSTS.

Abstract
Objective In recent years, a number of studies have suggested that inflammation-based biomarkers can be applied in the diagnostics and prognostic testing of disease. However, the association between these ratios and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the role of these inflammation-based ratios in patients with IBD. Methods Retrospective analysis of 362 patients with IBD and 100 healthy individuals from January 2016 and December 2021. The receiver operating characteristic curve and logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the diagnostic and predictive performance of the seven ratio markers [neutrophil- to-albumin ratio (NAR), neutrophil-to-pre-albumin ratio (NPAR), albumin-to-alkaline-phosphatase ratio (AAPR), albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR), albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR), fibrinogen-to-pre-albumin ratio (FPR), and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI)] regarding to disease activity in IBD individuals. Results Compared with healthy controls, patients with Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) exhibited higher levels of NAR, NPAR, FPR (P < 0.001), lower levels of AAPR, and PNI (P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that the level of NPAR (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 1.02-1.23, P = 0.016) and AGR (OR = 1.01, 95%CI: 1.01-1.12, P < 0.001) was an independent risk factor of IBD. Then, we found the level of NPAR (OR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.01-1.20, P = 0.02) and PNI (OR = 0.83, 95%CI: 0.71-0.96, P = 0.01) was independently associated with disease activity. Besides, a positive association was observed between the level of NPAR and two clinical scores [Harvey Bradshaw index (HBI) in patients with CD, Mayo score in patients with UC]. Finally, the level of NPAR (P = 0.002) and PNI (P = 0.003) showed a significant difference in the IBD-associated neoplasia group and IBD without neoplasia group. Conclusion Our data first suggests NPAR as a putative biomarker for diagnosing and predicting disease activity in patients with IBD. Investigations involving a larger number of IBD individuals are necessary to validate its use as an easily obtained peripheral blood biomarker of IBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight or obese cancer patients are more likely to develop a proinflammatory status. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the nutrition-inflammation marker can provide additional prognostic information on top of well-established Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG-PS) in overweight or obese patients with cancer. METHODS A total of 1667 overweight or obese cancer patients were enrolled in this study. We assessed the prediction accuracy of 10 nutrition-inflammation markers by time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and elucidated their association with overall survival by the Kaplan-Meier method and a Cox model. RESULTS In this analysis, the majority of patients had a good performance status (ECOG-PS score ≤1; 88.3%). Both the area under ROC curves and the C-index of the lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) demonstrated that LCR was the most significant nutrition-inflammation marker correlated with survival. In patients with good ECOG-PS, a low LCR was significantly associated with poorer prognosisand enhanced the predictive ability of one-year mortality. For specific tumor types, a low LCR was an independent prognostic factor for lung cancer, upper gastrointestinal cancer, and colorectal cancer, and it tended to be a significant predictor for breast cancer. In addition, those patients with a combined low LCR and poorer ECOG-PS (ECOG-PS score >1) showed the worst prognosis. CONCLUSION The LCR is more strongly associated with overall survival than other nutrition-inflammation markers, and it is able to further detect patients with worse prognosis on top of ECOG-PS in overweight or obese patients with cancer.

Abstract
This study was devoted to demonstrating the role of IL-31 and IL-34 in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic periodontitis (CP). From the results, we found that the IL-31 and IL-34 levels were significantly increased in GCF and serum of CP patients compared with healthy controls or obese patients. Meanwhile, the area under the curve results further verified the diagnostic potential of IL-31 and IL-34 in terms of discriminating CP from obese patients at the GCF and serum levels. Finally, after 1 year of continuous treatment, we found that IL-31 and IL-34 levels were decreased in CP, suggesting their potential as biomarkers in CP treatment response. Monitoring GCF and serum levels of IL-31 and IL-34 contributed to CP detection and treatment response.

Abstract
Swallowing disorder is one of the most common postoperative complications for oral cancer patients and seriously influences quality of life. Limited attention has been paid to evaluating swallowing training measures in postoperative oral cancer patients. This study systematically reviewed swallowing training measures for these patients. A comprehensive search strategy was undertaken across various databases for studies published between database inception and 15 June 2021. Raters independently judged titles, abstracts and full articles for selection according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included literature was evaluated for quality and data were extracted. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.3. Ten intervention studies (four randomized controlled trials and six quasi-experimental studies) involving 588 patients were identified. Across the studies, most started in the early postoperative stage; however, there were differences in starting time, training time and duration, and type of training. We summarized four training methods: oral exercise, oral sensory stimulation, compensatory strategies and protective airway manoeuvres. The meta-analysis indicated that swallowing training could improve patients' swallowing function and quality of life in the short term, but the long-term effects were not obvious. Swallowing training mostly occurred in the early postoperative period and training measures were often used in combination. The timing, frequency and content of interventions varied between studies, and the effectiveness of any single measure was unclear. High-quality randomized controlled trials are necessary to study the efficacy and clinical applicability of various training measures, to provide a theoretical basis for their optimal selection and to develop a standardized training programme for postoperative oral cancer patients.

Abstract
Background: Better prognostic biomarkers for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) must be developed, particularly within the realm of clinically and frequently administered tests, to advise appropriate clinical therapy and follow-up. In this study, we retrospectively investigated which of the several inflammation-nutrition indicators might predict the prognosis of patients with OSCC. Methods: The preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), CRP-albumin ratio (CAR), Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), modified GPS (mGPS), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutrition status (CONUT), and modified CONUT (mCONUT) were retrospectively evaluated using blood samples collected 1-5 days before surgery. To estimate the effect on the prognosis of tumor progression, the mean values of the markers between stages I/II and III/IV were used for subgroup analysis. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards model included all independent variables significantly associated with survival in the univariate analysis to determine the independent variables. Results: A total of 112 patients (69 males and 43 females) with primary OSCC who underwent surgical treatment at our hospital were included. There were statistically significant differences in the mean values of monocytes, platelets, and albumin between stages I/II and III/IV. According to the multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression, a low PNI was associated with shorter overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS); women were associated with shorter DFS. Conclusion: The pretreatment PNI had excellent predictive value for the 5-year OS and DFS of patients with OSCC. Future large-scale prospective studies with a high sample size are needed to verify our findings in OSCC patients.

Abstract
Patients with oral cancer have poor nutritional status before treatment. However, there have been no reports of the detailed evaluation of preoperative oral function in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the preoperative oral function of patients with OSCC and examine the relationship with nutritional status. Oral function measurements (microorganisms, oral dryness, occlusal force, tongue pressure, masticatory function, Eating Assessment Tool, and Postoperative Oral Dysfunction Scale) and Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) data were collected from 51 patients with OSCC (men: 37, women: 14, mean age: 72.1 years) who visited the Shimane University Hospital, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, from September 2019 to September 2021. The tongue was the most prevalent primary gingiva site [22 patients (43.1%)], and 36 patients (70.6%) had advanced cancer. Comparisons between nutritional status and each related factor revealed significant differences in the number of individuals in the household, cancer stage, presence of pulmonary disease, number of teeth, microorganisms (grade), and masticatory function (mg/dL) (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis using the total MNA-SF score as the dependent variable with adjustment for confounding factors showed significant association between oral dryness and tongue pressure (p < 0.05). No significant association was found for the Eating Assessment Tool or Postoperative Oral Dysfunction scale. Patients with OSCC may have decreased oral function because of the tumor at the time of diagnosis, which causes a decline in nutritional status. Preoperative interventions are necessary to improve nutrition based on the state of oral function.

Abstract
This study investigated preoperative neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) for predicting oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) survival. We retrospectively analyzed 368 patients who received curative OSCC surgery between 2008 and 2017. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were employed to identify the optimal NPAR cutoff (16.93), and the patients were then separated into low-NPAR and high-NPAR groups. Intergroup differences in survival were determined through Kaplan−Meier analysis and log-rank tests. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) predictors were identified using Cox proportional-hazards models. A nomogram integrating independent prognostic factors was proposed to increase the accuracy of OS prediction. A high NPAR (≥16.93) was associated with worse median OS and DFS than was a low NPAR (both p < 0.001); this finding was confirmed through multivariate analyses (hazard ratio (HR) for OS = 2.697, p < 0.001; and HR for DFS = 1.671, p = 0.008). The nomogram’s favorable predictive ability was confirmed by the calibration plots and concordance index (0.784). The preoperative NPAR is thus a promising prognostic biomarker in patients with OSCC after external validation in a larger cohort. Our nomogram can facilitate clinical use of the NPAR and provides accurate individualized OS predictions.

Abstract
Background: The nutritional risk index (NRI) is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival in various cancers, but its prognostic value in breast cancer remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the NRI and overall survival (OS) in breast cancer and to develop a predictive nomogram. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 1347 breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomy or lumpectomy between January 2011 and November 2012. Using a cutoff value of 110.59, patients were divided into a high-NRI group and a low-NRI group. OS was compared between the two groups. Clinicopathological factors independently associated with survival were used to construct a predictive nomogram. Results: Of the 1347 patients, 534 patients were classified as high NRI and 813 as low NRI. OS was significantly shorter in low-NRI patients. The 3- and 5-year OS rates were 87.3% and 73.4%, respectively, in the high-NRI group whereas they were 83.0% and 67.2%, respectively, in the low-NRI group. Cox regression analysis found that histopathological type, tumor size, lymph node status, progesterone receptor (PR) status, Ki-67, and NRI were independently associated with OS. Conclusions: NRI is an independent prognostic factor of OS in breast cancer patients. The proposed nomogram model may be a useful tool for individualized survival prediction.

Abstract
Background: The prognostic value of the CRP-albumin-lymphocyte index (CALLY index) was analyzed in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) undergoing curative surgery. Methods: We retrospectively included 279 patients who were diagnosed as having primary OSCC and being treated with surgery. The optimal cutoff for the preoperative CALLY index was identified by considering the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve; subsequently, the discriminatory ability of the cutoff was determined. We employed Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test to elucidate associations between the CALLY index and survival outcomes. We identified prognostic variables by using the Cox proportional hazards model. Finally, we devised a nomogram based on the CALLY index for predicting individualized survival. Results: The cutoff value of the CALLY index was determined to be 0.65. A CALLY index < 0.65 exhibited a significant association with pathological aggressiveness as well as shorter overall and disease-free survival (OS and DFS, both P < 0.001). A low CALLY index was an independent risk factor for short OS and DFS [hazard ratio = 3.816; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.393-6.086; P < 0.001; and hazard ratio = 2.103; 95% CI 1.451-3.049; P < 0.001, respectively] in multivariate Cox analysis. The prognostic nomogram based on the CALLY index yielded accurate predictions of OS, as revealed by a concordance index of 0.797. Conclusions: The preoperative CALLY index is easy and inexpensive to calculate and, in patients with OSCC, can be a valuable prognostic biomarker. The CALLY-index-based nomogram established in this study provides accurate survival predictions.

Abstract
Objective No study has reported the risk stratification of BMI and PNI in patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT). This study aimed to construct a risk stratification to guide the treatment of ESCC following dCRT. Methods A total of 1,068 patients with locally advanced ESCC who received dCRT were retrospectively analyzed. The impacts of clinicopathological factors on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were analyzed. Besides, the novel prognostic indices of pre-therapeutic nutritional index (PTNI) and prognostic index (PI) were developed. Results The median follow-up period of OS and PFS were 22.9 and 17.4 months, respectively. The high body mass index (BMI) group had better 5-year OS and PFS (36.4 and 34.0%) than the low BMI group (18.8 and 17.2%). The high prognostic nutritional index (PNI) group also had better 5-year OS and PFS (33.4 and 30.9%) than the low PNI group (17.5 and 17.2%). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that BMI and PNI were independent prognostic factors for OS and PFS. Based on nutritional indices, patients were categorized into the low-risk (PTNI = 1), medium-risk (PTNI = 2), and high-risk (PTNI = 3) groups with 5-year OS rates of 38.5, 18.9, 17.5%, respectively (p < 0.001) and 5-year PFS rates of 35.8, 17.6, 16.8%, respectively (p < 0.001). Besides, we also constructed a prognostic index (PI) for OS and PFS which was calculated based on statistically significant factors for predicting OS and PFS. The results revealed that the high-risk group had worse OS and PFS than the low-risk group (p < 0.001). Finally, RCS analysis demonstrated a non-linear relationship between the PNI, BMI, and survival for patients with ESCC. The death hazard of PNI and BMI sharply decreased to 41.8 and 19.7. Conclusion The decreased pre-therapeutic BMI and PNI levels were associated with a worse survival outcome. BMI and PNI are readily available and can be used to stratify risk factors for locally advanced ESCC patients undergoing dCRT. The novel risk stratification may help to evaluate patients’ pre-therapeutic status and guide dCRT for locally advanced ESCC patients.

Abstract
Background Glioblastoma (GBM) accounts for approximately 80% of malignant gliomas and is characterized by considerable cellularity and mitotic activity, vascular proliferation, and necrosis. Naples prognostic score (NPS), based on inflammatory markers and nutritional status, has a prognostic ability in various cancers. In the current study, we aim to explore the prognostic value of operative NPS in GBM patients and compare the prognostic ability between NPS and controlling nutritional status (CONUT). Materials and methods The retrospective analysis was carried out on consecutive newly diagnosed GBM patients who had underwent tumor resection at West China Hospital from February 2016 to March 2019. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS software and R software. Results A total of 276 newly diagnosed GBM patients were enrolled in the current study. Overall survival (OS) (p < 0.001) and tumor location (p = 0.007) were significantly related to NPS. Serum albumin concentrate, cholesterol concentrate, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte ratio, and CONUT score were all significantly associated with NPS (p < 0.001). The Kaplan–Meier curve indicated that NPS (log-rank test, p < 0.001) and CONUT score (log-rank test, p = 0.023) were significantly associated with OS. Multivariate Cox regression revealed that both NPS and CONUT score served as independent prognostic indicators. The prognostic model with NPS had the strongest prognostic capability and best model-fitting. Conclusion In the current study, NPS is found as an independent prognostic indicator for patients with newly diagnosed GBM, and the prognostic ability of NPS is superior to CONUT score.

Abstract
The body mass index (BMI) paradox describes that among patients with certain cancers, higher pretreatment BMI may be associated with improved survival. We examine the impact of BMI on overall survival (OS) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. A literature search was performed, and articles using hazard ratios to describe the prognostic impact of BMI on OS in HNSCC were included. Random-effects DerSimonian and Laird methods were employed for meta-analysis. Meta-analysis of OS indicated a lower hazards of death in the overweight (BMI: 25 kg/m2-30 kg/m2) compared to the normal weight (BMI: 18.5 kg/m2-25 kg/m2). This protective relationship loses significance when BMI exceeds 30 kg/m2. Underweight patients (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) demonstrate higher hazards of death compared to normal weight patients. Compared to HNSCC patients with normal weight, being overweight up to a BMI of 30 kg/m2 is a positive predictor of OS, while being underweight confers a prognostic disadvantage. Further studies are needed to determine the mechanisms by which increased body mass influences survival outcomes in HNSCC.

Abstract
Objective Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, fibrotic disease that affects the oral cavity, showing a high rate of malignant transformation. Curcuma exerts therapeutic potentials in many diseases including OSMF. However, the potential targets and pathways to explain the therapeutic effects of curcuma on OSMF are outside the scope of present knowledge. Herein we intend to reveal the predictive targets and potential pathways of curcuma against OSMF by a network pharmacology-based approach followed by molecular docking technology. Methods We searched the SymMap, GeneCards, and OMIM database to obtain curcuma and OSMF common targets. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) of curcuma and OSMF common targets were then analyzed, followed by functional enrichment analysis. The best binding mode of curcuma and target proteins was analyzed by molecular docking technology. Results We collected 290 putative targets of curcuma molecules and 600 known therapeutic targets of OSMF, with 64 curcuma and OSMF common targets sorted out. In the PPI network, there were 63 nodes with 922 edges. The node indicates protein and the line indicates PPI relation. The most enriched GO term in the BP level is “gland development”, followed by “cellular response to chemical stress”, and then “response to oxygen levels”, while the most enriched GO term in CC and MF is “membrane raft” and “cytokine receptor binding”, respectively. We also found 131 KEGG pathways significantly enriched by curcuma and OSMF common targets. The binding energy of curcuma to ALB, TNF, TP53, IL6, and VEGFA was −9.5 kcal/mol, −3.9 kcal/mol, −3.5 kcal/mol, −3.6 kcal/mol, and −8.9 kcal/mol, respectively, which suggested ALB and VEGFA were regarded as main targets involving in the potential mechanism of curcuma against OSMF. Conclusion The present study illustrated that the therapeutic effects of curcuma on OSMF were achieved by targeting ALB and VEGFA, which giving reference to further drug design and development for OSMF.

Abstract
Background With low response to present immunotherapy, it is imperative to identify new immune-related biomarkers for more effective immunotherapies for oral cancer. Methods RNA profiles for 390 oral cancer patients and 32 normal samples were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed. Immune genesets from ImmPort repository were overlapped with DEGs. After implementing univariate Cox analysis and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis, key immune-related gene pairs (IRGPs) among the overlapped DEGs for predicting the survival risk were obtained. Then, the cutoff of risk score was calculated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to stratify oral cancer patients into high and low-risk groups. Multivariate Cox analysis was used to analyze independent prognostic indicators for oral cancer. Besides, infiltration of immune cells, functional annotation, and mutation analysis of IRGPs were conducted. Biological functions correlated with IRGPs were enriched by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) method. Results We identified 698 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to oral cancer. 17 IRGPs among the DEGs were identified and integrated into a risk score model. Patients in the high-risk group have a significantly worse prognosis than those in the low-risk group in both training (P<0.001) and test (P=0.019) cohorts. Meanwhile, the IRGP model was identified as an independent prognostic factor for oral cancer. Different infiltration patterns of immune cells were found between the high- and low-risk groups that more types of T and B cells were enriched in the low-risk group. More immune-related signaling pathways were highly enriched in the low-risk group and Tenascin C (TNC) was the most frequently mutated gene. We have developed a novel 17-IRGPs signature for risk stratification and prognostic prediction of oral cancer. Conclusion Our study provides a foundation for improved immunotherapy and prognosis and is beneficial to the individualized management of oral cancer patients. Abstract
Introduction Systemic nutrition and immune inflammation are the key factors in cancer development and metastasis. This study aimed to compare and assess four nutritional status and immune indicators: prognostic nutritional index (PNI), nutritional risk index (NRI), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) as prognostic indicators for patients with thymic epithelial tumors. Materials We retrospectively reviewed 154 patients who underwent thymic epithelial tumor resection at our hospital between 2004 and 2015. The optimal cutoff value for each nutritional and immune index was obtained using the X-tile software. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models were used for survival analysis. Results Univariate analysis showed that PNI, NRI, NLR, SII, albumin (ALB), the albumin/globulin ratio (A/G), WHO stage, T stage, and drinking history were associated with the overall survival (OS) of patients (P < 0.05). The NRI, NLR, A/G, ALB, T stage, and WHO stage were significant independent prognostic factors of OS in multivariate analysis (P < 0.05). Finally, we constructed a coNRI-NLR model to predict OS and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Conclusions This study suggests that the preoperative NRI, NLR, and coNRI-NLR model may be important prognostic factors for patients with thymic epithelial tumors who undergo surgical resection.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have shown that the anesthetic technique may influence long-term outcomes after cancer surgery. However, the association between the anesthetic technique and long-term oncological outcomes after oral cancer surgery remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this study to address this gap. Methods We reviewed the electronic medical records of patients who underwent elective oral cancer surgery between January 2014 and December 2015. The patients were grouped based on the anesthesia maintenance: either propofol or sevoflurane. Propensity score matching in a 1:1 ratio was performed to deal with the potential confounding effects of baseline characteristics. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to compare hazard ratios (HRs) and identify the risk factors for death and recurrence. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan–Meier method, and survival curves were constructed from the date of surgery to death. Results In total, 1347 patients were eligible for analysis, with 343 and 1004 patients in the propofol and sevoflurane groups, respectively. After propensity score matching, 302 patients remained in each group. Kaplan–Meier survival curves demonstrated the 5-year overall and recurrence-free survival rates of 59.3% and 56.0% and 62.7% and 56.5% in the propofol and sevoflurane groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in overall survival or recurrence-free survival between the groups. The multivariate Cox analysis verified this conclusion with HRs of 1.10 and 1.11 for overall survival and recurrence-free survival, respectively, in the sevoflurane group. Older age, advanced tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage, and American Society of Anesthesiologists class III were associated with poor overall survival. Patients with advanced TNM stage and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma had a higher recurrence risk than their counterparts. Conclusion The overall and recurrence-free survival rates were similar between propofol-based intravenous anesthesia and sevoflurane volatile anesthesia in patients who underwent oral cancer surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the prognostic impact of preoperative Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) values in older adults undergoing radical surgery for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). SUBJECTS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 61 patients ≥ 65 years old with OSCC (43 men, 18 women; age: 72.1±5.4 years) who underwent radical surgery between 2013 and 2020. Factors influencing overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were examined. RESULTS Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that the optimal GNRI value for classifying patients into low-GNRI (<93.7; OS: n=19 [31.1%], DFS: n=42 [68.9%]) and high-GNRI groups (≥93.7; OS, n=19 [31.1%]; DFS, n=42 [68.9%]) was 93.7. OS and DFS rates were significantly lower in the low-GNRI group than in the high-GNRI group. Univariate analysis indicated that alcohol use, preoperative serum C-reactive protein level, lymphatic invasion, postoperative treatment, and GNRI were significantly correlated with OS, while lymphatic invasion, postoperative treatment, and GNRI were significantly correlated with DFS. In multivariate analysis, only GNRI was significantly correlated with OS. DFS and postoperative treatment were independent predictors of DFS. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative GNRI may be a significant prognostic factor in older adults with OSCC. GNRI assessment and nutritional intervention may improve prognosis in patients at high nutritional risk.

Abstract
ObjectiveThis study is aimed to determine the potential prognostic significance of nutritional risk index (NRI) in patients with stage III gastric cancer.MethodsA total of 202 patients with stage III gastric cancer were enrolled in this study. NRI was an index based on ideal body weight, present body weight, and serum albumin levels. All patients were divided into two groups by receiver operating characteristic curve: low NRI group (NRI<99) and high NRI group (NRI≥99). The relationship between NRI and clinicopathologic characteristics was evaluated by Chi-square test. The clinical survival outcome was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier method and compared using log-rank test. The univariate and multivariate analyses were used to detect the potential prognostic factors. A nomogram for individualized assessment of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). The calibration curve was used to evaluate the performance of the nomogram for predicted and the actual probability of survival time. The decision curve analysis was performed to assess the clinical utility of the nomogram by quantifying the net benefits at different threshold probabilities.ResultsThe results indicated that NRI had prognostic significance by optimal cutoff value of 99. With regard to clinicopathologic characteristics, NRI showed significant relationship with age, weight, body mass index, total protein, albumin, albumin/globulin, prealbumin, glucose, white blood cell, neutrophils, lymphocyte, hemoglobin, red blood cell, hematocrit, total lymph nodes, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (P<0.05). Through the univariate and multivariate analyses, NRI, total lymph nodes, and tumor size were identified as the independent factor to predict the DFS and OS. The nomogram was used to predict the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival probabilities, and the calibration curve showed that the prediction line matched the reference line well for 1-, 3-, and 5-year DFS and OS. Furthermore, the decision curve analysis also showed that the nomogram model yielded the best net benefit across the range of threshold probability for 1-, 3-, 5-year DFS and OS.ConclusionsNRI is described as the potential prognostic factor for patients with stage III gastric cancer and is used to predict the survival and prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Head-and-neck cancer patients run a high risk of peri- or post-treatment malnutrition that can severely affect the therapy outcome. However, little is known about malnutrition under the pre-treatment condition. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a systematic description of the pre-treatment nutritional status and risk of malnutrition in this population. MATERIAL AND METHODS Before the onset of the oncological therapy, nutritional status of 102 head-and-neck cancer patients was assessed by body mass index (BMI), their risk of malnutrition by "Nutritional Risk Screening" (NRS). Tumour stage and site, patients' age and sex as well as oropharyngeal dysphagia were analysed as possible influence factors. The latter was quantified by the Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). RESULTS According to BMI, malnutrition (undernutrition) was found in 6% of patients, a risk of malnutrition (NRS) in 27% of patients, and oropharyngeal dysphagia in 15%. In a linear regression, only oropharyngeal dysphagia was identified as a significant influence factor for the risk of malnutrition (β = 0.380/3.776; p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Pre-treatment risk of malnutrition was found in a quarter of head-and-neck cancer patients. For the early identification of this risk and for the introduction of measures that would help to avoid it, a pre-treatment examination of swallowing functions and a systematic malnutrition screening by means of NRS are recommended.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the utility of inflammation-based prognostic scores (IBPS) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in the treatment of oral cancer patients. METHODS For the 183 patients enrolled in this study, IBPS and SII were calculated from peripheral blood samples obtained before and after treatment and at the time of relapse. We examined overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) using previously reported cut-off values for IBPS. Cut-off values of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were analyzed as NLR 1.79, PLR 114.97, LMR 5, and PNI 52.44. The cut-off value for SII was set at 569. OS and DFS were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier methods using the cutoff of each IBPS and SII. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis using Cox proportional hazards were performed for OS and DFS. RESULTS Kaplan-Meier methods showed the high-PNI group showed good prognosis including OS and DFS, while the high-SII group displayed poor DFS. Univariate analysis showed that pre-treatment high PNI and low SII were significantly associated with better prognosis. Multivariate analysis identified pre-treatment PNI as independently associated with OS. For DFS, univariate analysis using Cox proportional hazards modeling showed that pre-treatment high NLR and high SII were significantly associated with worse prognosis, while high PNI was significantly associated with better prognosis. Multivariate analysis identified pre-treatment PNI and SII as independently associated with DFS. Parameters of PNI and SII components were compared between pre-treatment, post-treatment and at relapse in the high- and low-PNI groups. PNI was predominantly decreased in both high- and low-PNI groups at post-treatment and at relapse compared to pre-treatment. This trend was also observed for albumin. CONCLUSIONS Higher pre-treatment PNI was associated with better OS, while lower pre-treatment PNI and higher treatment SII were associated with poorer DFS in oral cancer patients. Our data indicated that PNI and SII might offer useful biomarkers for gauging prognosis and the efficacy of conventional therapies.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a poor prognostic factor in cancer disease. In case of head and neck cancer, there are multiple disease symptoms and side effects of treatment that increase the risk of malnutrition. The aim of the study is to assess the association between nutritional status at the time of qualification for home enteral nutrition (HEN) and overall survival of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), and assessment usefulness of selected nutritional indices as prognostic factors. The retrospective survival analysis involved 157 patients with HNC referred to HEN between January 2018 and October 2021. The nutritional status assessment was performed at the qualification for HEN visit. We have analyzed results of body mass index (BMI), Nutritional Risk Index (NRI) for patients <65 years, Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) for patients ≥65 years and malnutrition defined by Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). The mean patient survival was 44.7 weeks and the median was 23.9 weeks. Patients with low NRI and GNRI score had a higher risk of death (NRI: p = 0.0229; GNRI: p = 0.371). NRI, GNRI, and malnutrition defined by GLIM were superior to BMI as prognostic markers for survival. Results suggest that the use of NRI, GNRI, and GLIM criteria could provide useful prognostic information. The longer survival since the qualifying visit for home enteral nutrition suggests that nutritional management could be initiated earlier.
