Abstract
Objective Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) is an ion/anion transporter in the mitochondrial inner membrane that plays a crucial role in immune response, regulation of oxidative stress, and cellular metabolism. UCP2 polymorphisms are linked to chronic inflammation, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, exercise efficiency, and longevity. Daily step count and number of teeth are modifiable factors that reduce mortality risk, although the role of UCP2 in this mechanism is unknown. This study aimed to assess the possible effects of UCP2 polymorphisms on the association between daily step count and number of teeth with all-cause mortality. Methods This study was conducted as a cohort project involving adult Japanese outpatients at Sado General Hospital (PROST). The final number of participants was 875 (mean age: 69 y). All-cause mortality during thirteen years (from June 2008 to August 2021) was recorded. The functional UCP2 genotypes rs659366 and rs660339 were identified using the Japonica Array®. Survival analyses were performed using multivariate Cox proportional hazard models. Results There were 161 deaths (mean observation period: 113 months). Age, sex, daily step count, and the number of teeth were significantly associated with mortality. In females, UCP2 polymorphisms were associated with mortality independent of other factors (rs659366 GA compared to GG + AA; HR = 2.033, p = 0.019, rs660339 C T compared to CC + TT; HR = 1.911, p = 0.029). Multivariate models, with and without UCP2 genotypes, yielded similar results. The interaction terms between UCP2 genotype and daily step count or number of teeth were not significantly associated with mortality. Conclusion The effects of UCP2 polymorphisms on the association between daily step count or the number of teeth and all-cause mortality were not statistically significant. In females, UCP2 polymorphisms were significantly associated with all-cause mortality. Our findings confirmed the importance of physical activity and oral health and suggested a role of UCP2 in mortality risk independently with those factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Poor oral health has been predicted the development of frailty and sarcopenia as well as the subsequent need for long-term care. This cross-sectional study examined the relationships among tooth loss, prefrailty, and dietary patterns in community-dwelling older Japanese females. SUBJECTS/METHODS Information on the number of teeth, food consumption, and lifestyle factors was collected from 271 participants aged ≥ 65 yrs using a questionnaire. The number of teeth was self-reported and classified into 2 groups: natural teeth ≥ 20 and natural teeth < 20. Prefrailty was assessed using the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study. Three dietary patterns ("vegetables and dairy products" [VD], "rice and fish and shellfish" [RF], and "bread and beverages") were adopted from a cluster analysis of the intakes of 20 foods evaluated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire. The odds ratios (ORs) for prefrailty and dietary patterns were calculated using a binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 267 participants were analyzed, excluding those with frailty (n = 4). The rates of natural teeth < 20 and prefrailty were 57.3 and 37.4%, respectively. Natural teeth < 20 was positively correlated with prefrailty (OR, 4.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.54-8.52) and inversely correlated with VD pattern (OR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.27-0.69). Furthermore, both VD (OR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.16-0.91) and RF (OR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.11-0.62) patterns were inversely correlated with prefrailty. CONCLUSIONS Maintaining the number of natural teeth ≥ 20 into old age plays an important role in preventing a prefrailty. The promotion of VD and RF dietary patterns has potential as an effective nutritional strategy for preventing tooth loss and prefrailty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Implementing the Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS) framework into dental care provides a significant opportunity to link oral health to healthy aging. This project aimed to implement the AFHS 4Ms (what matters, medications, mentation, and mobility) in the provision of oral health care. This article describes the planning, integration, training development, and outcome measurements supporting a 4Ms approach at an academic dental clinic. METHODS The Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH) implemented screening instruments based on the 4Ms framework recommended for ambulatory care clinics by the Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI). These ambulatory instruments were integrated into the workflows of a Specialty Care Clinic through the development of a plan-do-study-act cycle, utilization of available clinic resources, and creation of interdisciplinary collaborations. RESULTS This project demonstrated the feasibility of implementing an AFHS checklist and tracking forms in dental practice by integrating available resources and prioritizing the 4Ms elements. This effort necessitated interdisciplinary collaborations between dental, medical, and social service professionals. It also created a new age-friendly focused education and training curriculum for dental residents and faculty. CONCLUSIONS This pilot project is the first to establish dental standards for AFHS implementation, adapting the 4Ms assessment and metrics to oral health. This AFHS underscores key oral health processes, including assessment, planning, and personalized oral health care, adapted to the unique needs of the older adult population, especially those with cognitive impairment.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the association between decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and nutritional status measured by Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015), in Iranian adults. In this cross-sectional study, data from the Ravansar non-communicable diseases cohort study were analyzed. DMFT index was employed as a measurement of oral health. The HEI-2015 score was calculated based on data obtained from Food Frequency Questionnaire and categorized into quartiles. Linear regression models were used to assess the association between HEI-2015 and DMFT. From total of 7549 participants with the mean age of 45.65 ± 7.70, 3741 of them were female (49.56%). The mean of DMFT in the highest quartile of HEI-2015 was lower than the lowest quartile (12.64 ± 7.04 vs. 14.29 ± 7.54, P < 0.001). The mean of DMFT in subject who had higher socioeconomic status (SES (was significantly lower than those with low SES (P < 0.001). The mean of DMFT in the lowest quartile of HEI-2015 was significantly lower than in the highest quartile, after adjusting for confounding variables (ß = - 0.11, 95% CI - 0.54, - 0.30). The increasing dairy intake (β = - 0.08, 95% CI - 0.13, - 0.03) was associated with decreasing DMFT score and increasing refined grains (β = 0.20, 95% CI 0.02, 0.35) and sodium (β = 0.07, 95% CI 0.02, 0.12) intake was significantly associated with increasing DMFT score. A healthy diet was associated with a decrease in DMFT score in the studied population. Following a healthy diet is recommended for oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual interest is essential for maintaining positive sexual relationships and sexual function, which have recently been recognized as important indicators of good health and quality of life. Here, we prospectively investigated associations between sexual interest and mortality in a community-based population. METHODS This study enrolled 20,969 subjects (8,558 males and 12,411 females) aged ≥ 40 years who participated in annual health check-ups in Yamagata Prefecture. Sexual interest was assessed by a self-report questionnaire. Associations between sexual interest and increased all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and cancer mortality were investigated by Cox proportional hazards modeling. RESULTS During follow-up (median: 7.1 years), 503 subjects died; 67 deaths were due to cardiovascular disease, and 162 were due to cancer. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that all-cause mortality and cancer mortality were significantly elevated among men who lacked sexual interest (log-rank P<0.0001, P<0.05). Cox proportional hazards model analysis with adjustment for age, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, alcohol drinking status, BMI, education, marital status, frequency of laughter, and psychological distress showed that the risk of all-cause mortality was significantly higher among men who lacked sexual interest than men who had sexual interest (hazard ratio [HR] 1.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17-2.44). CONCLUSION Lack of sexual interest is suggested to be a risk factor for all-cause mortality in Japanese males over 40 years old. This finding has implications for the importance of sexual interest in increasing longevity in this population.

The use of interdental cleaning devices and periodontal disease contingent on the number of remaining teeth in Korean adults. Sci Rep 2022; 12:13853. Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of interdental brushes and dental floss on the prevention of periodontitis in participants with ≥ 20 or < 20 remaining teeth by using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018. Data from 11,614 participants were analysed using multivariate logistic regression after adjusting for sociodemographic factors (age and sex), socioeconomic factors (level of education and individual income), oral health-related variables (daily toothbrushing), and systemic health-related variables (smoking, diabetes, and obesity). The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) showed statistically significant results for both floss (AOR, 1.41; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.22-1.64) and interdental brushes (AOR, 1.16; 95% CI 1.01-1.34). However, no significant difference was found in the subjects with fewer than 20 teeth. The subgroup analysis showed that interdental brushes had a significant preventive effect on women who had more than 20 teeth. Among participants with fewer than 20 teeth, interdental brush users had more periodontitis in men. Regarding those with more than 20 teeth, health inequality was alleviated when floss and interdental brushes were used. The bottom line is that the effect of preventing periodontitis in interdental brushes and dental floss was more evident in participants with ≥ 20 remaining teeth rather than in participants with < 20 remaining teeth.

Abstract
This study aimed to estimate the risk of mortality related to the number of missing teeth in a South Korean population. The ≥ 40-year-old population of the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort 2002–2003 was analyzed. Participants were selected from a total of 220,189 participants and included in groups of 0 teeth lost, 1–2 teeth lost, and ≥ 3 teeth lost. Among the total population, 17,211 participants were included in no missing teeth, 1–2 missing teeth, and ≥ 3 missing teeth and were randomly matched 1:1:1 for age and sex. Mortality from specific causes and all-cause mortality were compared among the groups. The hazard ratio (HR) of the number of missing teeth for all-cause mortality or each cause of mortality was analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models. According to the cause of death, the HRs for metabolic disease, digestive disease, and trauma were greater in the group with ≥ 3 missing teeth than in the no missing teeth group. The group with ≥ 3 missing teeth indicated a 1.19-fold higher HR for all-cause mortality than the no missing teeth group [95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) = 1.12–1.27, P < 0.001]. The group with 1- 2 missing teeth did not show a higher HR for all-cause mortality. In the group with 1–2 missing teeth, the HRs for mortality from mental disease and digestive disease were higher than those in the no missing teeth group. The group with 1–2 missing teeth did not show a higher HR for all-cause mortality. The number of missing teeth was linked with a higher risk of mortality. For specific causes of mortality, mortality from metabolic disease, digestive disease, and trauma was higher in the participants with the number of missing teeth.

Abstract
We examined whether the number of teeth could be a surrogate marker for metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk in cross-section. A total of 3771 individuals from the general urban Japanese population (1690 men, 2081 women; mean age 67.1 ± 11.0 years) participated in this study. Participants were diagnosed with MetS with three or more components hypertension, hyperglycemia, lipid metabolism abnormality, and abnormal abdominal girth. Questionnaires were administered to determine the number of teeth, smoking status, drinking status, and past illnesses. To clarify the relationships between the number of teeth and the presence of MetS components, we divided subjects into two groups: those with less than 20 residual teeth and those with 20 or more, then statistical analyses (Mantel-Haenszel tests and logistic regression analysis) were performed. MetS were higher for those with ≤19 teeth than those with ≥20 teeth when examining all participants and women-only groups. Hyperglycemia, low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides, and diagnosis with MetS were all significantly higher in the ≤19 teeth group for both sexes combined and for women. These results suggest that less than 20 teeth may be a surrogate marker for MetS risk, but further studies on gender differences and pathological background are needed.

Abstract
Hypertension is related to impaired mastication that causes malnutrition, declining the general health of older adults. This study assessed the role of dietary intake in the relationship between oral health and blood pressure. Eight hundred ninety-four adults aged ≥65 years who independently lived in rural regions of Japan participated in this study. Hypertension was classified according to the guidelines of the Japanese Society of Hypertension. The oral condition was evaluated by analyzing the remaining teeth, occlusal force, posterior occlusal support, masticatory performance, oral moisture, and oral bacterial level. Dietary intake was assessed using a brief self-administered dietary history questionnaire. Mann-Whitney U, chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and logistic regression analyses were used to elucidate the factors related to hypertension. Normotensive, hypertensive, and history of hypertension were observed in 30.9%, 23.8%, and 45.3% of the participants, respectively. The factors significantly associated with the hypertension were age, body mass index, posterior occlusal support condition, and sodium-to-potassium ratio related to salt intake and/or vegetable intake. Participants without posterior occlusion significantly had higher risk of hypertension (odds ratio = 1.72). This study suggested that there was an association between oral health and hypertension, while the loss of occlusal support may influence nutritional intake conditions.

Abstract
Gram-negative bacteremia is a major cause of death among hematology inpatients who require heavy-dose chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Gram-negative bacillus (GNB) is more likely to be detected when the oral health is poor. However, there is a dearth of studies on the relationship between oral assessment and prevalence of GNB in hematology inpatients.This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the original point-rating system for oral health examinations (point-oral exam) and the prevalence of GNB in hematology inpatients at the hematology ward of the Yamanashi University Hospital. GNB was detected by cultivating samples from the sputum and blood of each patient.A total of 129 subjects underwent a medical checkup and point-oral exam. The sputum and blood culture results of 55 patients were included in this study. The total points of patients positive for GNB (n = 25, 45.5%) were significantly higher than those who were negative for GNB (total score: median, 25th, 75th, percentile; 6 [4, 7] vs 2 [1, 4]; P = .00016). Based on the receiver operating characteristic analysis, a cutoff score of 5 proved to be most useful to detect GNB.An oral evaluation with a cutoff value of 5 or higher in the point-oral exam might indicate the need for a more thorough oral management to prevent the development of systemic infections from GNB.
