Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical residency is a part of postgraduate medical education and involves clinical training in a selected specialty. It is a challenging step in a physician's professional development. This study aims to estimate the impact of the residency training program and demographic factors on the trainee's state of well-being (SOW). METHODS This was an observational cross-sectional study carried out in the year 2019-2020, which aimed to measure the SOW of residents undergoing clinical training in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A total of 260 residents participated in the study. A self-administered validated online the World Health Organization, Quality of Life Scale questionnaire- BREF was distributed to collect the data. The collected information on four different domains was analysed and compared across the baseline characteristics and different specialties. When appropriate, the independent sample t-test, bivariate correlation analysis, and ANOVA tests were used. RESULTS A total of 260 resident responses were included in the final analysis The results revealed a significant difference in physical health scores (p = 0.006), social relationship scores (p = 0.038), and environmental scores (p < 0.001) while no significant difference was found in psychological health scores among the physicians' specialties (p = 0.053). Post hoc comparison found statistically significant variations in the physical health domain between the medical and emergency specialties (p = 0.007), as well as surgical and emergency specialties (p = 0.024). There was also a significant difference between medical and emergency specialties (p = 0.008) in the social relationship domain. In the environment domain, significant variation was reported between medical specialties and emergency specialties (p = 0.001), as well asbetween surgical specialties and emergency specialties (p = 0.045). Female residents reported significantly lower quality of life in the physical (p = 0.020) and psychological (p = 0.032) domains. CONCLUSIONS A significant relationship was found between physical, social, and environmental domains according to residents' specialties. The factors that affected one or more domains included age, female gender, marital status, disease status, the number of on-calls received, and workload. We emphasize the importance of implementing policies to regulate working hours and on-call schedules as well as prioritizing mental health support.

Abstract
Background Residents in training must employ a variety of study strategies, as they not only participate in academic studies but also interact with patients. This study aimed to evaluate the study practices and factors affecting those practices among Saudi Arabian physical medicine and rehabilitation residents during their residency program. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a previously used questionnaire was distributed to Saudi Arabian physiatry residents from July 1 to August 15, 2022, via a social media platform and completed using a Google Forms survey. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was used to collect, clean, and import the data before IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 22.0 was utilized for statistical analysis. Results The data of 94.91% of respondents were included in the analysis. Individuals who were female, unmarried or divorced, and without children predominated. Only 17.9% (n = 10) of the residents believed that their training program effectively prepared them to pass the board examination, which was the most strongly motivating factor for studying for 85.7% of respondents. Over two-thirds of the residents mentioned that they regularly exercise. Residents who studied more than 11 hours per week had a significantly lower score in the category of factors that negatively affect examination performance (M = 12.33 ± 2.82, F = 2.794, P < 0.05). Females, final-year residents, and Riyadh residents studied more than their counterparts. Conclusion Our study is the first to investigate how Saudi physiatrists study, with the finding that current physiatry residents employ a combination of traditional and contemporary learning strategies. This information can help stakeholders to understand current training challenges, improve the quality of training for physiatry residents, and create an ideal learning environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests physicians have higher rates of mental distress than other professionals. Although multiple studies have been conducted among Saudi medical trainees to address this issue, no reviews assessed multiple psychological problems simultaneously. We aimed to examine the prevalence and trends of depression, anxiety, burnout and stress among Saudi medical trainees. METHODS A systematic review was conducted searching PubMed/Medline, OVID, Scopus, PsychInfo, EBSCOhost and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) for studies addressing depression, burnout, stress and anxiety among Saudi medical trainees, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to evaluate quality. The main findings were summarised in tables. RESULTS We identified 57 records from 2001 to 2020. Overall (mild, moderate or severe) depression ranged from 28% to 70.6%, while stress ranged from 30.5% to 90.7%. Burnout was primarily assessed among residents with an overall prevalence reaching 85.5%. Overall anxiety ranged from 52.7% to 67%, and was only assessed among undergraduates. Higher levels of all four mental conditions were reported among females. CONCLUSION This review suggests high prevalence of depression, stress, burnout and anxiety among medical trainees, with higher estimates for females compared to males.

Abstract
Background: Respiratory therapists (RTs) provide various types of patient care in different clinical settings. Burnout can have an undesirable effect on RTs and their patients. Managing the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in hospitals, could induce stress in RTs and increase the likelihood of burnout. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the level of burnout among RTs during the COVID-19 pandemic.Method: A validated cross-sectional questionnaire was used to identify the prevalence and characteristics of burnout among RTs. The questionnaire was administered by the respiratory care department of a tertiary healthcare center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The data analysis included descriptive, inferential, and correlational tests.Results: The survey was distributed among 100 RTs with a response rate of 66%. Most respondents reported high burnout levels in the three domains of burnout: 77% reported emotional exhaustion, 98% reported depersonalization, and 73% reported low personal achievement. Univariate analysis revealed that emotional exhaustion was significantly higher among RTs who were male, married, or working in critical care settings. Female RTs and those working in general care settings reported feelings of reduced personal achievement. Furthermore, the analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between the years of experience and emotional exhaustion (r=0.6, p<0.001).Conclusions: A high prevalence of burnout was observed among RTs in one Saudi tertiary hospital. Burnout is associated with several factors, and interventions should target all domains of burnout. RT management and staff are responsible for addressing their needs and collaboratively working together to overcome burnout. Further investigations focusing on techniques and strategies to alleviate burnout are required.

Abstract
Purpose To examine the effect of long working hours on anxiety and depression among resident physicians working in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Methods This is a cross-sectional study using an anonymous and confidential self-administered electronic questionnaire. Mental health status (depression and anxiety) is measured using hospital anxiety and depression scale. A multi-stage stratified sampling technique was used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 24.0. The Chi-square test and ordinal logistic regression (OLR) were used to test the association. Results A total of 258 medical residents participated in the study. The prevalence of anxiety was 39.5% (n=102) and depression was 20.9% (n=54). In multivariate OLR against anxiety, working more than 64 hours per week was significantly associated (p=0.013) with an increase in the odds of observing a higher level of anxiety (odds ratio=2.91, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.25–6.77) compared with working up to 40 hours per week after adjusting for age, amount of sleep and exposure to injustice. For the depression multivariate OLR, it would increase the odds of observing a higher level of depression for working 41–48, 49–64 and more than 64 hours per week by 2.21 (95% CI:1.07–4.58, P=0.033), 2.07 (95% CI:1.01–4.27, P=0.049) and 2.37 (95% CI:1.03–5.50, P=0.044) respectively, compared with working up to 40 hours per week and adjusting for the amount of sleep and exposure to injustice. Conclusion Resident physicians are at increased risk of developing anxiety and depression which is influenced by long working hours and a variety of other factors. Therefore, attention needs to be paid to this association. The implementation of interventions for the prevention and screening of physicians’ mental health disorders is needed.

Abstract
Background Burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization that reduces efficiency at work. No studies have been reported focusing only on residency burnout and risk factors from our country until now. This study aimed to find out the impact and the association of specific demographic and practice characteristics with burnout among resident doctors. Methods A prospective cross-sectional survey of all resident doctors under training at that point of time in 2019 in the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Nepal in different specialties was done. We evaluated demographic variables, practice characteristics, and assessed burnout through validated Maslach burnout inventory (MBI) tools, and data were analyzed. Results A total 347 among 410 resident doctors (227 male) responded to the survey. Median age was 30 years (range 25–44). Overall, 147 (42.4%) of responding residents were burned out with high emotional exhaustion in 58 (16.6%), high depersonalization in 55 (15.9%), and low personal achievement in 34 (9.8). In regression analysis, out of independent variables gender, marital status, having children, specialty, hours of work per week and year of residency, specialties (general surgery odds ratio [OR]; 12.595, confidence interval [CI],[ 1.037–152.9], P; 0.047), obstetrics, and gynecology (odds ratio [OR]; 13.977, confidence interval [CI]; [1.324–147.5], P; 0.028), and anesthesiology (odds ratio [OR]; 11.54, confidence interval [CI]; [1.014–131.4], P; 0.049)) and hours of work per week (≥80 h) (odds ratio [OR]; 2.511, confidence interval [CI]; [1.128–5.589], P; 0.024), were significantly associated with high burnout. Conclusions Burnout is common among trainee resident doctors which is possibly preventable. Thus, the concern should be to prepare strategies to identify and minimize burnout from the individual, institutional, and societal sides. It is essential to preserve and promote the mental health of trainee residents to prevent serious consequences in the personal lives of resident doctors and as well as on patient outcomes. Burnout amongst resident doctors is extremely predominant which may be caused due to various reasons. We describe the impact of burnout among resident doctors and focus on identifying different risk factors for burnout. Preservation of mental health of resident doctors is essential to prevent serious consequences in their lives as well as on patient care.

Abstract
Background Resident physicians in Sudan face a variety of physical and psychological stressors. Nevertheless, the prevalence of burnout syndrome among this critical population remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence rate of burnout and its associated factors in a sample of resident physicians in Sudan. Methods A cross-sectional design was used to assess the burnout syndrome among resident physicians at the teaching hospitals of Wad-Medani in Gezira state, east-central Sudan. Three hundred resident physicians at the dermatology, general surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, ear, nose and throat (ENT), oncology, urology, and internal medicine departments, were approached and invited to participate in the study. The Arabic version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory was distributed to respondents from July to October 2021. Results From the 300 resident physicians, 208 (69.3%) responded. The average age of the study population was 29.99 ± 3.01 years, with more than half were females (56.7%), single (59.6%), and with more than three years of residency experience (50.5%). In total, 86.1% met the criteria for burnout in at least one dimension and 13.9% in all three dimensions. On the dimension of emotional exhaustion (EE), 70.7% reported high levels of burnout. While, 44.2% reported high levels of depersonalization (DP), and 73.1% experienced a sense of decreased professional accomplishment (PA). There were significant differences in burnout, EE, and DP levels among different specialties, with the pediatrics-specialty trainees reported higher levels. Burnout syndrome was associated with the working hours per single duty; participants who reported working for more than 24 hours had experienced higher levels of burnout, EE, and DP. Conclusion Large-scale studies are required to assess the determinants of burnout syndrome among resident physicians in Sudan. In addition, Stakeholders should urgently implement effective remedies to protect the mental health of resident physicians.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Resident physicians working in medical specialties play an essential role in the makeup of the healthcare workforce. However, there is little theoretical understanding of how different medical specialties are perceived or how residents' choices are made. Many factors can influence resident physicians' choice of specialty. Previous studies have looked at personality differences within specialties, but were unable to describe the heterogeneity of viewpoints that existed within each specialty. Our objective, was to gather information about factors related to resident's life goals and career motivation as a means of improving residency program design and enhancing the college's advisory capacity. DESIGN Our study used a self-report anonymous questionnaire to characterize the relationship between resident physicians' preferences and their choice of specialty. SETTING King Saud University & King Saud University Medical City. PARTICIPANTS 353 residents. RESULTS The majority of respondents reported that their current specialty was one of their top three choices. Almost half were satisfied with their residency program, and 24.1% were very satisfied. Gender, specialty, and workload demonstrated significant associations with residency program satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the effects of career motivation and life goals for resident physicians in enhancing their career satisfaction. Ensuring that residents are able to find time for personal needs has important consequences for their perceptions of wellbeing and may be an effective strategy for promoting career satisfaction.

Abstract
Objectives Recent studies have highlighted an increasing prevalence of depression and sleep problems among physicians during their residency training in the medical field. The study aims to explore the prevalence of depressive symptoms and sleepiness among the residents of different medical specialties in the two regions of KSA and describe the factors that potentially cause depression and sleepiness. Methods A survey was distributed to the residents of King Abdulaziz Medical City in the Riyadh province, and to the residents of King Fahad Specialist Hospital Buraidah and Maternity and Children's Hospital Buraidah in the Qassim province. The Patients' Health Questionnaire-2 was used to determine the prevalence of depression and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale was used to measure sleepiness. Results One hundred and eighty-one residents completed the survey. While depressive symptoms were prevalent among 93% of the residents, 49% of the residents reported excessive daytime sleepiness. Depressive symptoms were more common in the residents of King Abdulaziz Medical City, with the prevalence being 94.5%. There was a significant association between depressive symptoms and excessive sleepiness (p = 0.046). Conclusion Depressive symptoms and excessive sleepiness are highly prevalent in postgraduate trainees. Residents with depression were found to be sleepier during their work. Given the negative effect on patient safety, the high prevalence of both depressive symptoms and sleepiness is alarming. There is an urgent need to improve residents' wellness through well-structured well-being programs.

Abstract
Background
The use of technology for work has become an unavoidable component of most occupations. It is considered a double-edged sword; it has a massive impact on employees’ mental health and productivity, mainly when used outside the working hours. This practice is referred to as technology-assisted supplemental work (TASW). This study aimed to determine the effect of supplemental work using technology behavior on burnout levels among Saudi board residents and its consequences on work productivity.
Results
Three hundred seventy-seven residents were involved in this study to assess their TASW behavior, burnout level, and presenteeism. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scale is used to assess burnout, which is composed of three subscales: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA). This study revealed that a high risk of EE was found among 52.5% of residents, 12.2% were at high risk of DP, and 53.1% had low PA. The mean score of TASW was 19.7 (SD 3.75) out of 30 points, while the mean score of presenteeism (SPS-6) was 18.5 (SD 4.49) out of 30 points. A significant correlation was found between SPS-6 and MBI subscales including emotional exhaustion (r=−0.642, p<0.001), depersonalization (r=−0.406, p<0.001), and personal accomplishment (r=0.206, p<0.001), but association with TASW did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05).
Conclusion
Burnout “specifically Emotional Exhaustion” was noted to be significantly high among residents in different specialties in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, several factors in the study were evidently demonstrated to be highly related to burnout which is directly associated with lost work productivity. However, our study suggests that extra working hours at home using technology were not associated with burnout or an increase in productivity.

Abstract
Background: Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a low sense of personal accomplishment. The aim of this study was to identify burnout incidence in pediatric residents and evaluate possible risk factors for burnout. Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we approached all pediatric residents in the Saudi Pediatrics Residency Program in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (n=457) between January and March 2019. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey was used to assess burnout incidence. In addition, demographic factors, schedule burden, career choice satisfaction, and work-life balance were assessed. Results: The response rate was 57.8% (264/457). Males represented 46.6%. Only 14% of the residents in the study were satisfied with their work-life balance, and 62% were satisfied with their career choice of pediatrics. The overall high burnout incidence was 15.9%, the high emotional exhaustion incidence was 63.6%, the high depersonalization incidence was 27.7%, and the low sense of personal accomplishment incidence was 48.5%. In the multivariate analysis, an increase in the average number of on-calls per month (odds ratio [OR]=1.66, 95% CI 1.12-2.46; P=0.012) and satisfaction with salary (OR=0.47, 95% CI 0.33-0.66; P<0.001) showed significant associations with high overall burnout. Conclusion: We found a high level of emotional exhaustion and a low sense of personal accomplishment among respondents. However, less than one-third of residents had feelings of depersonalization or overall high burnout. Residency program directors may need to make modifications in their programs to ensure a good work-life balance for residents that will help ensure that these physicians provide safe and sustained patient care.

Abstract
Background: Burnout is a workplace phenomenon and is high among healthcare workers, particularly physicians. It brings in significant negative impact on patient care and physicians. Considerable number of studies have highlighted burnout issues on residents of other specialties; however, scarcity of data exist on burnout among family medicine residents. Objectives: This study aimed to measure the prevalence of burnout, and its predictors amongst family medicine residents in Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 133 family medicine residents using a custom-designed and validated Self administered questionnaire. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) was used to measure the three dimensions of burnout: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA). Results: The overall prevalence of burnout was 84.2%. In terms of three dimensions of burnout, 29.3% of respondents scored high for EE burnout, 19.5% for DP and 79.7% for PA. High burnout in all three dimensions was found to be strongly associated with a number of variables under study. Male gender (aOR = 3.41, 95% CI 1.1-11.10; P = 0.042), married residents (aOR = 3.32, 95% CI 1.1-10.48) and use of anti-anxiety drugs (aOR = 3.75,95% CI = 2.0-21.26) were identified as predictors of high emotional exhaustion. A work schedule of more than 8 hours per day (aOR = 3.79, 95% CI 1.12-10.87) and young age (aOR = 2.6, 95% CI 1.12-10.87) were identified predictors for high depersonalisation and low personal accomplishment, respectively. Conclusions: Prevalence of burnout in this study exhibits that it is a common problem in family medicine residents. There is a need for a nationwide longitudinal study targeting the family medicine residents to study the effects of burnout on physician well-being and patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical residency often poses a challenge to residents, with long working hours and a stressful work environment. Surgical residents are at an increased risk of burnout and depression. Such mental health burdens could go so far as to affect treatment outcomes. AIM To assess the prevalence and risk factors for depression and burnout among residents across surgical specialties in Kuwait. MATERIALS AND METHODS An online questionnaire was sent to the residents enrolled to the surgical residency programs in Kuwait, from the period of January 2020-February 2020. Variables collected included; age, gender, marital status, smoking history, exercise, specialty, year of training, on-call frequency, assessment of burnout (using the abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory (aMBI)) and assessment of depressive symptoms (using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score). RESULTS A total of 85 surgical residents between the age of 20 and 40 years responded. Most (64.7%) were male and 35.3% female. More than half were married (51.8%) and 41.2% were single. The majority of the residents were in general surgery (43.5%), with the least being in otolaryngology (7.1%) and neurosurgery (5.9%). The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 55.3%, and 51.8% had a high overall burnout score. CONCLUSION Addressing burnout at all stages during residency training is paramount in improving standard of care as well as increasing the wellness of residents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout among postgraduate medical trainees (PMTs) is increasingly being recognized as a crisis in the medical profession. We aimed to establish the prevalence of burnout among PMTs, identify risk and protective factors, and assess whether burnout varied by country of training, year of study and specialty of practice. METHODS We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Web of Science and Education Resources Information Center from their inception to Aug. 21, 2018, for studies of burnout among PMTs. The primary objective was to identify the global prevalence of burnout among PMTs. Our secondary objective was to evaluate the association between burnout and country of training, year of study, specialty of training and other sociodemographic factors commonly thought to be related to burnout. We employed random-effects meta-analysis and meta-regression techniques to estimate a pooled prevalence and conduct secondary analyses. RESULTS In total, 8505 published studies were screened, 196 met eligibility and 114 were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of burnout was 47.3% (95% confidence interval 43.1% to 51.5%), based on studies published over 20 years involving 31 210 PMTs from 47 countries. The prevalence of burnout remained unchanged over the past 2 decades. Burnout varied by region, with PMTs of European countries experiencing the lowest level. Burnout rates among medical and surgical PMTs were similar. INTERPRETATION Current wellness efforts and policies have not changed the prevalence of burnout worldwide. Future research should focus on understanding systemic factors and leveraging these findings to design interventions to combat burnout. STUDY REGISTRATION PROSPERO no. CRD42018108774.

Abstract
PURPOSE Considering the important role of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in healthcare services and the stressful nature of their job, this study aimed to assess the occupational stress among oral and maxillofacial surgeons and residents in Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-sectional questionnaires were developed, and they included the perceived stress scale and questions about potential sources of stress. A sample size of 180 was determined using a 0.05 level of significance and a precision of ±8%. The survey was distributed using a consecutive non-random sampling method to all oral and maxillofacial surgeons and residents in all regions in Saudi Arabia from May to December 2019. RESULTS One hundred and seventy-two responses were received. Males were the predominant gender. The perceived stress scale revealed a moderate stress level among surgeons and residents. However, residents had a significantly higher score (P = 0.005). Increased working days were significantly associated with higher stress levels (P = 0.006). Long on-call periods were significantly and positively correlated with increased stress levels among residents since their work schedule was not flexible (P = 0.000). The majority of surgeons and residents believe that they have unconducive and stressful work environments and that working as a maxillofacial surgeon is stressful. CONCLUSION The study results suggest that there is increased occupational stress among oral and maxillofacial surgeons and residents in Saudi Arabia. This study highlights the need for stress management programs to minimize stress factors at the workplace and to ensure a healthy working environment for the practitioners.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the study habits of Saudi urology residents throughout their residency training. It examines the study time and quality of study materials used by Saudi urology residents and identifies ways to maximize study benefits. PATIENTS AND METHODS An online questionnaire was distributed to 152 registered residents in regions throughout Saudi Arabia (response rate: 93.4%). The questionnaire addressed study habits throughout training, motivations for studying, preferred study resources, impressions on teaching quality, study preparation methods, and exam preparedness among junior and senior residents. RESULTS Among all residents, 37.3% read for 2-5 hours weekly. Juniors read significantly more than seniors (P = 0.034). Marital status affects seniors' study habits (P = 0.029). For most seniors, preparation for the final board exam is the greatest motivation for studying (P = 0.006). The AUA/EAU guidelines were useful information source for seniors (P = 0.001). Fifty-four percent (54.4%) of residents felt that their residency program did not provide protected study time prior to the board exams. Moreover, the majority (64.8%) felt that the training program did not adequately prepare them for the board exams. CONCLUSION We recommend that local program directors implement more effective teaching methods. Structured reading habits and specific study materials were found to be positive predictors of successful performance. Residents should also be educated in balancing working hours, social life, and study.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Evidence suggests that physicians experience high levels of burnout and stress and that trainee physicians are a particularly high-risk group. Multiple workplace- and non-workplace-related factors have been identified in trainee physicians, but it is unclear which factors are most important in association with burnout and stress. Better understanding of the most critical factors could help inform the development of targeted interventions to reduce burnout and stress. OBJECTIVE To estimate the association between different stressors and burnout/stress among physicians engaged in standard postgraduate training (ie, trainee physicians). DATA SOURCES Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews from inception until April 30, 2019. Search terms included trainee, foundation year, registrar, resident, and intern. STUDY SELECTION Studies that reported associations between stressors and burnout/stress in trainee physicians. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Two independent reviewers extracted the data and assessed the quality of the evidence. The main meta-analysis was followed by sensitivity analyses. All analyses were performed using random-effects models, and heterogeneity was quantified using the I2 statistic. MAIN OUTCOME AND MEASURES The main outcome was the association between burnout/stress and workplace- or non-workplace-related factors reported as odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% CIs. RESULTS Forty-eight studies were included in the meta-analysis (n = 36 266, median age, 29 years [range, 24.6-35.7 years]). One study did not specify participants' sex; of the total population, 18 781 participants (52%) were men. In particular, work demands of a trainee physician were associated with a nearly 3-fold increased odds for burnout/stress (OR, 2.84; 95% CI, 2.26-3.59), followed by concerns about patient care (OR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.58-3.50), poor work environment (OR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.57-2.70), and poor work-life balance (OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.53-2.44). Perceived/reported poor mental or physical health (OR, 2.41; 95% CI, 1.76-3.31), female sex (OR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.20-1.50), financial worries (OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.07-1.72), and low self-efficacy (OR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.31-3.46) were associated with increased odds for burnout/stress, whereas younger age and a more junior grade were not significantly associated. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The findings of this study suggest that the odds ratios for burnout and stress in trainee physicians are higher than those for work-related factors compared with nonmodifiable and non-work-related factors, such as age and grade. These findings support the need for organizational interventions to mitigate burnout in trainee physicians.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of burnout and its associated risk factors in radiology residents in Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in February 2019, and all radiology residents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were invited to complete a survey that contained a validated measure of burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey) alongside possible predictors of burnout. RESULTS A total of 108 responses were received, for a response rate of 49.7%. High overall burnout was reported by 24.1% of respondents, high emotional exhaustion (EE) by 56.5%, high depersonalization by 31.5%, and low sense of personal accomplishment (PA) by 64.8%. The significant predictors of burnout included satisfaction with work/life balance (OR = 0.35, 95% CI = 0.03 to 0.43, p = 0.002) and exercising (OR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.1 to 1, p = 0.07). Married residents were more prone to have a low sense of PA in addition to dissatisfied residents with hospital staff appreciation (OR = 4.8, 95% CI = 1.48 to 15.5, p = 0.01) and (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.37 to 0.94, p = 0.03), respectively. CONCLUSION One-fourth of the radiology residents studied showed high rates of burnout, and more than half the residents reported high rates of EE. The residents scored very poorly in the sense of PA. The radiology residents who were satisfied with their work/life balance had lower burnout rates, in addition to lower EE and a higher sense of PA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, increased depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment due to chronic emotional stress at work. Burnout impacts job satisfaction, job performance, vulnerability to illnesses, and interpersonal relationships. There is a gap in the systematic data on the burden of burnout among healthcare professionals from different sectors of healthcare in Middle Eastern countries. Our objective was to examine the burden of burnout among healthcare providers in the Middle East, how it was assessed, which sectors were included, and what interventions have been used. METHODS Articles were found through a systematic review of search results including PubMed, Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), and PsycINFO (EBSCO) using search terms reflecting burnout in Middle Eastern countries among populations of healthcare providers. Studies were included if they examined a quantitative measure of burnout among healthcare providers in the Middle East. RESULTS There were 138 articles that met our inclusion criteria for this systematic review. Studies focused on burnout in the Middle East among physicians (N = 54 articles), nurses (N = 55), combined populations of healthcare workers (N = 22), and medical students (N = 7). The Maslach Burnout Inventory was the most common tool to measure burnout. Burnout is common among physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, with prevalence estimates predominantly ranging between 40 and 60%. Burnout among healthcare providers in the Middle East is associated with characteristics of their work environments, exposure to violence and terror, and emotional distress and low social support. CONCLUSIONS Burnout is highly prevalent among healthcare providers across countries in the Middle East. Previous studies examining burnout in this region have limitations in their methodology. More thoroughly developed epidemiologic studies of burnout are necessary. Health system strengthening is needed in a region that has endured years of ongoing conflict, and there is an urgency to design and implement programs that tackle burnout among health professionals.

Abstract
Introduction: Orthopaedic surgery is physically demanding. Surgeons may have to work long unpredictable hours especially during residency training. This arduous task comes with the risk of burnout leading to negative repercussions to the surgeon and the patient. In view of strategising peer support, we intend to review the literature and analyse whether orthopaedic resident burnout is a global issue. We also intend to derive common strategies to tackle burnout at individual and organisational levels. Materials and Methods: A literature search was carried out in the databases including PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, and Google Scholar to shortlist studies dealing with orthopaedic residency and related burnout. Those studies that used the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for quantifying burnout were collectively interpreted. Other studies were reviewed to analyse the vulnerability, risk factors, consequences and management strategies related to burnout. Results: Among a total of 72 titles shortlisted, eight studies independently reported burnout among orthopaedic surgery residents/trainees and used MBI as a tool for assessing burnout. Based on the three subscales of MBI, 37.2% had high degree of emotional exhaustion (EE), 48% had high degree of depersonalisation (DP) and 33.1% perceived low personal accomplishment. This signifies the high prevalence of burnout among orthopaedic residents/trainees. Conclusion: Burnout among orthopaedic surgery residents seems to be a universal problem. Risk factors could be multifactorial, influenced by clinical competency and work-home environment. This can be tackled at the individual level by being aware of burnout syndrome, involving in adequate physical activity and spending quality social time; and at the organisational level by duty hour limitation, professional appreciation and mentorship programme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No study has examined the stress level and coping strategies among critical care nurses in Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVES Examine perceived stress and coping behaviors among nurses in intensive care units in Saudi Arabia, and the influence of cop.ing mechanisms on stress. DESIGN Descriptive cross-sectional. SETTING Two tertiary training hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Nurses from cardiac, surgery and pediatric intensive care units responded to an online survey. Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) and the Brief COPE Inventory were used as primary research tools. Multivariate methods were used to analyze the data. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Stress levels, coping strategies, and associated factors. SAMPLE SIZE 154 nurses. RESULTS The majority of the respondents reported a moderate level of stress in the past month (87.0%). Mean (SD) scores for nurses working in the cardiac ICU indicated significantly higher levels of stress compared to surgical ICU (18.18 [3.88] vs 6.17 [3.21], P=.025). Belief in religion was the most common coping behavior while the use of substances was the lowest (mean scores [SD] 6.70 [ 1.72] vs 2.22 [0.81]). In the multivariate analysis, behavioral disengagement (P=.016) and self-blame (P less than .001) intensified the PSS-10 score, whereas acceptance (P=.048) reduced the PSS-10 score. CONCLUSION The additional knowledge that behavioral disengagement and blaming aggravate stress can serve as the basis in formulating work-related stress reduction strategies among nurses caring for critical patients. LIMITATIONS The use of self-reports, convenience sampling, and selected demographic factors may have limited the scope and generalizability of the findings and induced social desirability bias.
