A model of the organizational resilience of hospitals in emergencies and disasters

BACKGROUND

In the health system, hospitals are intricate establishments that offer vital medical services. Their resilience plays a crucial role in mitigating the societal repercussions of disasters. A hospital must possess the capacity to withstand risks, preserve its fundamental structure and operations, and enhance its preparedness by augmenting various capabilities and promptly recovering from the impacts of potential risks. It enables the hospital to attain a heightened level of readiness. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a resilience model tailored for hospitals to navigate crises and disasters effectively.

METHODS

This mixed-method study was conducted in 2023 in three phases: (1) Identification of the factors influencing the organizational resilience of the hospital, (2) Evaluation of the influential factors by an expert panel. (3) Following the standardization process, we administered 371 questionnaires to individuals, such as university staff managers and supervisors, nursing managers, and research unit managers. The sample size was determined by multiplying the components by 10, resulting in 360 (10 * 36). Therefore, we selected a sample size of 371 participants. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the causal relationships between variables. These steps were performed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 22 software. Finally, we identified and presented the final model. We utilized AMOS 22 and applied the SEM to assess the correlation between the variables, with a significance level of 0.05.

RESULTS

Findings indicate that the appropriate modeling identified five dimensions comprising 36 components. These dimensions include vulnerability, preparedness, support management, responsiveness and adaptability, and recovery after the disaster. The model demonstrates a good fit, as indicated by the X2/d indices with a value of 2.202, a goodness of fit index (GFI) of 0.832, a root mean square error of estimation (RMSEA) of 0.057, an adjusted comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.931, and a smoothed fit index (NFI) of 0.901.

CONCLUSION

Enhancing hospital resilience is crucial for effective preparedness and response to accidents and disasters. Developing a localized tool for measuring resilience can help identify vulnerabilities, ensure service continuity, and inform rehabilitation programs. The proposed model is a suitable framework for assessing hospital resilience. Key factors include human resource scarcity, hospital specialization, and trauma center capacity. Hospitals should prioritize efficient resource allocation, information technology infrastructure, in-service training, waste management, and a proactive organizational framework to build resilience. By adopting this approach, hospitals can better respond to crises and disasters, ultimately reducing casualties and improving overall preparedness.

Resilience, Burnout and Mental Health in Nurses: A Latent Mediation Model

Background/Objectives: The burnout syndrome in nurses has been related to the development of mental health problems. On the contrary, resilience is related to adequately coping with stressful situations and better mental health. The objective was to analyze the relationship between resilience and mental health problems in nurses and estimate the proportion mediated by burnout in the association. Methods: In 2021, a total of 1165 Spanish nurses were selected through a stratified random sampling method. Participants anonymously filled in the Resilience Scale (RS-14), the Maslach Burnout Inventory Survey, and the General Health Questionnaire. To test the hypothesis proposed and explain the mediating effect of burnout empirically, structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied. A latent mediation model was computed. Results: Resilience was negatively related to burnout and mental health problems. The direct relationship between burnout and the latent health variable was positive. In addition, in view of the total effect of resilience on mental health problems and the magnitude of the indirect effect, we stated that the proportion of this effect mediated by burnout ranged from 0.486 to 0.870. Conclusions: This study reveals that fostering resilience in nurses directly and indirectly reduces burnout and improves their mental health. The implementation of resilience programs and supportive institutional policies is recommended to improve working conditions and the quality of patient care.

Nurse-mother communication and support: Perceptions of mothers in neonatal units

Introduction

Having a hospitalized neonate is a stressful experience for parents, especially mothers. Thus, in recent years, a paradigm shift occurred in the neonatal units, focusing on the needs of parents and supporting them in addition to caring for neonates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nurse-mother communication and support in neonatal units in Bushehr, Iran.

Method

This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed in neonatal units of 6 hospitals in Bushehr, Iran, in 2022. Using the census method, all eligible mothers who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Data collection tools included demographic information form, nurse-parent support tool and nurse-parent communication questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS version 24 using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation test.

Results

The total mean score of nurse-parent support tool was 3.72 ± 0.72 and the total mean score of nurse-parent communication questionnaire was 59/27 ± 12/82. Caregiving support had the highest mean score (4.07 ± 73 0.73) and emotional support had the lowest (3.42 ± 91 0.91). Also, a statistically significant difference was seen between the admitted unit variable and the mean score of nurse-mother communication and support. Additionally, there was a statistically significant difference between the mechanical ventilation status of the neonate and the mean score of nurse-mother support. A significant positive correlation was seen between the neonatal gestational age and the mean score of nurse-mother communication.

Conclusions

The total mean score of nurse-parent support and communication was moderate. Therefore, nursing support and communication need to be improved. Planning is needed to enhance the role of neonatal nurses and strengthen their support and communication skills in line with the family-centered care approach.

An important issue of burnout among pre-hospital emergency medical personnel in Chengdu: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

This survey aims to comprehensively understand occupational burnout among pre-hospital emergency medical personnel and explore associated risk factors.

METHODS

A cross-sectional online survey using a census method was conducted between 15 July, 2023, and ends on 14 August, 2023, in Chengdu, SiChuan province, China. The questionnaire included general demographic information, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) with 15 items, and the Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) with 14 items. Univariate analysis was conducted on all variables, followed by multivariate logistic regression models to examine the associations between occupational burnout and the risk factors.

RESULTS

A total of 2,299 participants,99.57% completed the survey effectively The participants were from 166 medical institutions in Chengdu, comprising 1,420 nurses (61.50%) and 889 clinical doctors (38.50%). A total of 33.36% participants experienced burnout, predominantly mild (30.27%), followed by moderate (2.78%) and severe (0.3%). Physicians, higher fatigue scores, age, work experience appeared to be related to burnout. Logistic regression models revealed that individuals aged over 50 were less prone to experience burnout compared to medical staff aged 18-30 (OR: 0.269, 95% CI: 0.115-0.627, p = 0.002). Physicians were more prone to experience burnout compared to nursing staff (OR: 0.690, 95% CI: 0.531-0.898, p = 0.006). Those with 0-5 years of experience were more prone to experience burnout compared to those with 6-10 years or over 15 years of experience (OR: 0.734, 95% CI: 0.547-0.986, p = 0.040; OR: 0.559, 95% CI: 0.339-0.924, p = 0.023). Additionally, for each 1-point increase in the fatigue score, the likelihood of burnout in medical staff increased by 1.367 times (OR: 1.367, 95% CI: 1.323-1.412, p < 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

Pre-hospital emergency medical personnel demonstrate a notable prevalence of mild job burnout. These results provide a groundwork for future focus on the various stages of job burnout within pre-hospital emergency staff, alerting hospital and departmental managers to promptly address the mental well-being of their personnel and intervene as needed.

Hospital preparedness assessment for road traffic accidents with mass casualties: a cross-sectional study in Kurdistan Province, Iran

BACKGROUND

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are predicted to become the world's seventh leading cause of death by 2030. Given the significant impact of RTAs on public health, effective hospital preparedness plays a pivotal role in managing and mitigating associated health and life-threatening issues. This study aims to meticulously evaluate the preparedness of selected hospitals in western Iran to handle road traffic accidents with mass casualties (RTAs-MC).

METHODS

The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a reliable and valid questionnaire to measure hospitals' preparedness levels. Descriptive statistics (frequency distribution and mean) were utilized to provide an overview of the data, followed by analytical statistics (Spearman correlation test) to examine the relationship between hospital preparedness and its dimensions with the hospital profile. Data analysis, performed using SPSS software, categorized preparedness levels as weak, moderate, or high.

RESULTS

The study found that hospitals in Kurdistan province had a favorable preparedness level (70.30) to respond to RTAs-MC. The cooperation and coordination domain had the highest preparedness level (98.75), while the human resource management (59.44) and training and exercise (54.00) domains had the lowest preparedness levels. The analysis revealed a significant relationship between hospital preparedness and hospital profile, including factors such as hospital specialty, number of beds, ambulances, staff, and specialized personnel, such as emergency medicine specialists.

CONCLUSION

Enhancing preparedness for RTAs-MC necessitates developing response plans to improve hospital profile, considering the region's geographic and topographic features, utilizing past experiences and lessons learned, implementing of Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), providing medical infrastructure and equipment, establishing communication channels, promoting cooperation and coordination, and creating training and exercise programs.

A qualitative study on barriers and strategies to hospital preparedness against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents

BACKGROUND

The effects of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents on human society can be irreparable. Preparing the health system for these incidents is essential. This study aims to identify obstacles to hospital preparedness against CBRN incidents and provide solutions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interview method in 2022. The research community included experts in the fields of CBRN, and 17 persons were included in the study through purposive sampling. The interviews were collected by interview guide and recorded face-to-face and online and were analyzed using thematic content analysis method in MS Word 2016.

RESULTS

The interviews' analysis was classified into two main categories and 34 sub-categories. Some of the most important obstacles to the hospital preparedness against CBRN incidents were the lack of proper crisis management, the lack of specialist staff, the stress of employees, the lack of turnover and sufficient rest for employees, legal gaps, and so on. The main strategies were determining the type and extent of the risk factor, strong crisis management, the lack of parallelism, continuous monitoring, having a protocol and road map, appropriate training programs, having skilled personnel, rapid response of personnel, positive attitude of the staff, and the favorable condition of the building.

CONCLUSION

The appointment of an expert in the field of CBRN and having a specialized unit, the existence of specialized and trained staff along with access to the required facilities, clear instructions, and intra-departmental and inter-departmental cooperation affect the readiness of hospitals against CBRN incidents.

Components of hospital personnel preparedness to evacuate patients in disasters: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

During natural catastrophes, hospital staff members' readiness for crisis management-particularly concerning patient evacuation and improving their safety-becomes paramount. This study aimed to identify the components contributing to hospital staff members' preparedness to evacuate patients in an emergency.

METHOD

A systematic review was conducted by searching databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and grey literature through May 2023. Studies that offered unique qualitative or quantitative data regarding hospital personnel readiness to evacuate patients in an emergency were included. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used to examine the extracted data points.

RESULTS

In total, there were 274 scientific articles. The total number of unique studies decreased to 181 after removing duplicate articles. 28 papers that were deemed appropriate for additional study were found based on the titles and abstracts of these articles. Eighteen papers that met the inclusion criteria were selected for the systematic review after their entire texts were finally assessed. Hospital staff preparedness for patient evacuation was divided into four primary topics and nineteen sub-themes. The four primary themes that emerged were management, communication, individual issues, and training on the evacuation process.

CONCLUSION

The implementation of proper disaster evacuation training programs can be achieved by elevating the perceived sensitivity and protective motive of personnel and considering the personnel's stages of change. Training hospital staff to properly evacuate patients during disasters is also significantly impacted by other factors, such as effective administration, leadership and prompt and efficient communication.

A cross-sectional survey on the relationship between workplace psychological violence and empathy among Chinese nurses: the mediation role of resilience

BACKGROUND

Workplace violence is one of the most serious public health issues worldwide in healthcare occupations, nurse is a profession which faces the greatest risk of exposure to workplace violence among healthcare occupations.

OBJECTIVE

The present study aimed to explore the relationship between workplace psychological violence and empathy among Chinese nurses, and further examine the mediation role of resilience in this relationship.

METHOD

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among a convenience sample of clinical registered nurses in Xinjiang China from 29 September 2023 to 19 October 2023.The online questionnaire, contained the general information form, the Workplace Psychologically Violent Behaviors Instrument, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Healthcare Professionals Version, and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, was used to collect data. The IBM SPSS statistics software version 22.0 was used to perform data analyses in forms of descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis.

RESULT

This survey recruited a convenience sample of 1613 clinical registered nurses aged 22 to 55 years who come from diverse ethnicities and worked in different departments. A total of 534 nurse experienced psychological violent, which yielded a positive rate of 33.1% for psychological violent among nurses. Pearson analysis reported a negative correlation between psychological violences and empathy (r=-0.724, P < 0.01) as well as a negative correlation between psychological violences and resilience (r=-0.681, P < 0.01). Mediation analysis reported that resilience mediated the negative relationship between psychological violence and empathy, the mediation effect accounted for ab/(ab + c') = 23.40% of the total effect.

CONCLUSION

This study supported an inverse ralationship between psychological violence and empathy among Chinese nurses where resilience acted as a protective factor to mediated the negative impacts of psychological violences on empathy These results directed health policies and clinical interventions to equip nurses with resilience to copy with and recover from workplace psychological violence.

Nutritional status among earthquake survivors: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Earthquakes, as one of the most devastating natural disasters, have many consequences, including the collapse of buildings where food is produced, stored, and distributed, which can ensue with numerous nutritional problems. This study was to investigate the nutritional status of earthquake survivors.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a systematic review and meta-analysis study.

METHODS

The present review was conducted according to the PRISMA guideline. The data were collected by searching the data resources of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, MagIran, and Scientific Information Database. Meta-analysis was conducted using the random effects model, and the I2 index was used to assess heterogeneity among studies. Publication bias was assessed using Begg's test.

RESULTS

In this study, 342 studies were identified in the primary literature search, and after removing duplicates, 14 of which were finally selected for meta-analysis. Based on the results of the meta-analysis, the overall prevalence was obtained: 4.19% for wasting, 16.78% for stunting, 12.59% for underweight, and 28.06% for anemia after the earthquake.

CONCLUSION

The results indicated that earthquake survivors are exposed to malnutrition. Therefore, it is recommended that adequate food and nutritional supplements are provided to all earthquake survivors.

Applied distance learning methods in disaster preparedness: A systematic review

Nowadays, accidents and disasters are one of the most important issues facing humans. Training is an important feature in disasters and distance learning is a suitable method for education in every place and at every time. The aim of this study is to determine distance learning methods in disaster preparedness. This study was conducted to this question: what types of distance learning methods can use in disaster preparedness?". In this study, all published English language papers, with no time limit, were extracted by the end of December 2021 through search in PubMed, Scopus, Google scholar, ISI WOS (Web of Science), and Embase. The primary search used "distance learning", "disaster" and their MeSH terms. Quality appraisal carried out with CASP. Information in the articles including study time, study population, e-learning methods, and type of disasters or emergencies were extracted. Based on the search, 46 studies were carried out between 2002 and 2021. The most studied target group in the studies was health professionals and the content of the courses was attributed to disaster preparedness as well as biological disasters. Regarding e-learning methods, the most used method was 'simulation'. At the time of disasters, including pandemics, disruption in education may be long-term and may require overlapping response and recovery periods. And virtual education during a disaster may be rejected or endorsed by individuals or groups based on cultural, ideological, or prejudicial issues. Distance education can be used for effective disaster education in different phases of the disaster cycle, depending on the available facilities and infrastructure.

Risk and prediction of job burnout in responding nurses to public health emergencies

BACKGROUND

In public health emergencies, nurses are vulnerable to adverse reactions, especially job burnout. It is critical to identify nurses at risk of burnout early and implement interventions as early as possible.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey of the hospitals in Xiangyang City was conducted in January, 2023 using stratified cluster sampling. Anonymized data were collected from 1584 working nurses. The Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) were used to evaluate the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and burnout of nurses in public health emergencies. Logistic regression analysis was established to screen for risk factors of burnout, and a nomogram was developed to predict the risk of burnout. A calibration curve and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to validate the nomogram internally.

RESULTS

This study showed that only 3.7% of nurses were completely free of PTSD during a public health emergency. We found that PTSD varied by age, marital status, procreation status, length of service, employee status, and whether working in the ICU. The nurses aged 30 ~ 40 years old, single, married without children, non-regular employees, worked for less than three years or worked in the ICU had higher levels of PTSD. Regarding the prevalence of burnout, 27.4%, 48.5%, and 18.6% of nurses had a high level of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and diminished personal accomplishment (PA), respectively. There, 31.1% of nurses had more than two types of job burnout. The number of night shifts, the type of hospital, marital status, and the severity of PTSD were all associated with higher rates of exhaustion among nurses. As a graphical representation of the model, a nomogram was created and demonstrated excellent calibration and discrimination in both sets (AUC = 0.787).

CONCLUSIONS

This study confirmed the PTSD and burnout are common problems for in-service nurses during public health emergencies and screened out the high-risk groups of job burnout. It is necessary to pay more attention nurses who are single and working in general hospitals with many night shifts, especially nurses with severe PTSD. Hospitals can set up nurses' personal health records to give timely warnings to nurses with health problems, and carry out support interventions to relieve occupational stress.

Comparison of the Iranian and Scandinavian bachelor of nursing curriculum (Sweden): A scoping review

BACKGROUND

The comparison of the educational curriculum improves the content and quality of the curriculum and needs to be revised and modified in line with the current needs of society. Development of nursing knowledge, the emergence of emerging diseases requires that the nursing curriculum be codified and provide the necessary skills to provide quality and safe care.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study aimed to Comparison of Iranian and Scandinavian Bachelor of Nursing Curriculum (Sweden). This descriptive-comparative study was conducted based on the Bereday model in four stages: Description, Interpretation, Juxtaposition, Comparison, and Analysis in 2022. We use relevant electronic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Iran Medex, SID, Magiran, Google Scholar, Iran Doc, and Science Direct databases.

RESULTS

The results showed that despite the similarities, the Swedish nursing curriculum had special features in most of the mentioned dimensions. Including decentralized admission, Fits the need, competency-based curriculum, attention to holistic care and intercultural care, use of new digital technologies in education, and clinical training and evaluation.

CONCLUSION

It seems that the Iranian nursing curriculum is far from the mentioned perspective. Using the experiences of the world's top universities, such as Sweden, can improve the quality of nursing undergraduate programs and improve the nursing profession by eliminating current shortcomings.

Respond quickly and effectively! Components of the military health surveillance system in natural disasters: A qualitative study

BACKGROUND

The systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data by health surveillance systems provide timely and comprehensive surveillance of public health, identification health priorities, and, consequently, a quick and timely response to reduce damage during natural disasters. Since military forces appear as first responders at the scene of accidents, the present study aimed to identify the components of the military health care system during natural disasters.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

Qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews were analyzed via the conventional content analysis approach to identify the components of the military health care system in natural disasters. The participants consisted of 13 experts who were experienced in providing health services in the military and the civilian health care system during natural disasters in January 2022 to June 2022.

RESULT

The identified components were classified into four main categories, namely, pre-requisite components (comprehensive health care, defined position, and providing information), driving components (system efficiency, effective communication), operational components (contingent performance, effective response), and promotional components (purposeful support, pre-disaster preparation).

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the military health surveillance system is a cooperative service for the national health system in which data is essential for making decisions on health and treatment measures during disasters. This study-by identifying four categories of the important components in the design, implementation, and development of the military health surveillance system-provides a comprehensive view of an appropriate and evidence-based military surveillance system in disasters.

Navigating into the unknown: exploring the experience of exposure to prehospital emergency stressors: a sequential explanatory mixed-methods

INTRODUCTION

The unpredictability of prehospital emergencies combined with constantly changing circumstances can lead to increased stress and mental health issues among Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). To accurately determine the stress-inducing factors in the prehospital environment, it is important to first identify the stressful events that occur in this environment. Therefore, this study strives to provide a thorough analysis of the stressors in the prehospital environment.

METHODS

Sequential explanatory mixed methods were conducted in Hamadan prehospital emergency centers in 2022. The study included 251 EMTs, who were selected through a method in the quantitative phase. The quantitative part used a questionnaire consisting of basic information and the Posttraumatic Stress Questionnaire (PCL-5). In the qualitative phase, 17 with extensive experience in dealing with prehospital stressors were selected based on their PCL-5 scores (above 33). The qualitative phase analysis was carried out using the contractual content method using the Graneheim and Ladman's approach. Statistical analyzes for the quantitative and qualitative phases were performed using SPSS 21 and maxqda 10, respectively.

RESULTS

The study revealed that the EMTs had an average PTSD score of 21. 60 ± 11. 45. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the number of shifts had a statistically significant relationship with PTSD scores (t = 26.38, P < 0.001). The qualitative phase of the study included 17 interviews, resulting in 14 subcategories, which consisted of four categories: "the overall impact of the stress crisis on technicians," "missing links in the communication network in incident management," "professional shortcomings in pre-hospital care," and "the complex and multifaceted context of stressful pre-hospital emergencies." Additionally, the study's theme was centered around "surveying the experiences of EMTs in stressful environments."

CONCLUSION

As the number of shifts increased, the primary cause of the high prevalence of PTSD in EMTs was revealed. Prehospital emergency stress can be reduced and managed more skillfully by adjusting various factors such as shortening workdays, offering continuous training, augmenting workforce, supplying ambulance equipment insurance, refraining from hiring personnel devoid of clinical training, hiring psychologists, hiring midwives in an emergency, updating prehospital protocols and guidelines, encouraging cooperation between EMTs and other relief groups, and utilizing cutting-edge technologies.

The effects of using the nurse self-concept mobile application on the retention of nursing students

BACKGROUND

The high dropout rate among nursing students has become a global concern as it leads to a shortage of nurses on the one hand and a negative impact on the professional motivation of nursing students on the other. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of using the Nurse Self-Concept Mobile Application (NSCMA) on the retention of nursing students.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The present study is an experimental work of research with a longitudinal design conducted from April to December 2021. The study population was second-year nursing students in a nursing school in the south of Iran who were randomly divided into an experimental (n = 49) and a control group (n = 50). The assessment was based on a pretest-posttest design and a one-month follow-up. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS v. 21 using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and analytical statistics (repeated measures). The P value was set <0.05.

RESULTS

The means of the students' ages and grades were 21.31 ± 2.43 and 15.30 ± 2.13, respectively. The results showed a statistically significant increase in the experimental group's intent-to-stay mean scores as measured in three stages (P = 0.029), indicating that the intervention enhanced the nursing students' inclination to stay in nursing programs. However, the changes in the control group's mean scores were not statistically significant (P = 0.132).

CONCLUSION

The Nurse Self-Concept Mobile Application proved effective in enhancing nursing students' inclination to complete their education and follow a career as a nurse. Thus, it is essential that nursing students' education include programs designed to enhance the students' self-concept, especially in the first few years of their education. Also, nursing schools should use this software to encourage students to stay in the nursing major.

Experiences and challenges of nursing education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study in Iran

BACKGROUND

The preparedness of nurses in the COVID-19 pandemic, will be of great importance when it comes to the unknown future of the pandemic and other similar ones. Identifying their problems can lead to better planning, preparation, and management. This study aims to explore Iranian nurses' experience of their preparedness challenges to give an effective response to the pandemic.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A qualitative content analysis approach using semi-structured interviews was employed to explore nurses' preparedness experiences. 28 nurses were interviewed, after transcription of the interviews, a content analysis using constant comparison was performed for data analysis based on Graneheim and Lundman approach.

RESULTS

The results of the study can be summarized in 6 main categories and 14 subcategories, such as the necessity of continuing educational workshops, the necessity of holding exercises in the same environment, the importance of familiarity with the pandemic, the importance of educating all those involved in providing services in the pandemic, the need for providing immersive education for the pandemic and the need for planning and practice concerning the pandemic.

CONCLUSION

When nurses receive more support, they can have their best performance. up-to-date training can prepare nurses more effectively, which will, in turn, make prepared nurses available, maximize their efficiency, and minimize their adverse mental consequences. Nurse managers may support nurses and increase hospital resilience in such emergencies. Nurses indicated some issues including managers' support, workplace culture, education, physical space, access to PPE, and willingness to provide the best care. These findings can be helpful in the management of the pandemic and preparing nurses as a large group of healthcare workers. Necessary training, along with the provision of adequate resources, should be programmed to support this effective group of health providers.

Picture of the employment status of nurses in the world: Scoping review on pros and cons

Nurses play a vital role in the delivery, quality improvement of healthcare services, and promoting patient health. Therefore, methods of providing nurses are an important issue. This study was conducted to collect evidence on the methods of providing nurses and their advantages and disadvantages by a scoping review method. The Arksey and O'Malley Framework and PRISMA were used in directing the present scoping review. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were used to conduct the review and report on results. The ISI Web of science, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest electronic databases were searched for relevant articles published between January 2010 and December 2020 using the keywords and their synonyms. Finally, 19 articles out of 1813 ones to answer the research questions were selected. The results showed that although two general methods are for the employment status of nurses (full-time and part-time nurses), different classification countries are dissimilar from each other. A total of 13 advantages and 20 disadvantages of the part-time pattern and 6 advantages and 4 disadvantages were extracted from the full-time pattern of studies. None of the patterns has precedence over the other. Despite the strengths and weaknesses, each of the full-time or part-time patterns in its position is beneficial. With proper management and planning, it is possible to minimize their weaknesses and benefited from their advantages. Training part-time nurses to maintain and improve their level is a key point in reducing the disadvantages of this pattern.

Systematic review on the current state of disaster preparation Simulation Exercises (SimEx)

INTRODUCTION

The simulation exercise (SimEx) simulates an emergency in which an elaboration or description of the response is applied. The purpose of these exercises is to validate and improve plans, procedures, and systems for responding to all hazards. The purpose of this study was to review disaster preparation exercises conducted by various national, non-government, and academic institutions.

METHODOLOGY

Several databases, including PubMed (Medline), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), BioMed Central, and Google Scholar, were used to review the literature. Information was retrieved using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and documents were selected according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). To assess the quality of the selected articles, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) technique was utilized.

RESULTS

A total of 29 papers were selected for final review based on PRISMA guidelines and the NOS quality assessment. Studies have shown that many forms of SimEx commonly used in disaster management including tabletop exercises, functional exercises, and full-scale exercises have their benefits and limitations. There is no doubt that SimEx is an excellent tool for improving disaster planning and response. It is still necessary to give SimEx programs a more rigorous evaluation and to standardize the processes more thoroughly.

CONCLUSIONS

Drills and training can be improved for disaster management, which will enable medical professionals to face the challenges of disaster management in the 21st century.

Application of Nursing Intervention Based on Nel Noddings Care Theory for School-Aged Asthmatic Children

Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the effect of nursing intervention based on Nel Noddings care theory on self-management behavior and symptomatic improvement in school-age asthmatic children in China. Methods: In this study, a sample of 100 school-aged children suffering from asthma was chosen, and divided into two groups: observation group and control group. Both groups received routine nursing but the observation group was combined with nursing intervention based on Nel Noddings theory.Results:The total scores of social psychologies, daily life, disease medicine and self-management in the observation group before intervention were similar to those in the control group. The self-management scores of the observation group after intervention were higher than those of the control group. The improvement time of wheezing and cough in the observation group was shorter than that in the control group. The total number of complete compliance and partial compliance in the observation group was higher than that in the control group. Conclusion: The application of nursing intervention based on Nel Noddings care theory to the nursing of school-age asthmatic children can improve the self-management ability of children, promote the recovery of cough, wheezing and other symptoms, and is of great significance to improve the compliance and nursing effect of children, with high popularization and application value.

Understanding the inclination of South Indian nursing graduates in using mobile learning applications

BACKGROUND

Clinical-based mobile learning courses have great demand among the nursing graduates as learners look for possibilities to update skills. The present study explores the feasibility, familiarity, utility, and attitude of nursing graduates of South India toward mobile learning applications (m-apps).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An online-based cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted in May 2021 among the South Indian nursing graduates of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, using a questionnaire consisting 49 items categorized under six sections with items related to socio-demographic information; m-app usage; online learning experience; preference in using m-apps for learning purposes before COVID-19 and during COVID-19; students' engagement through e-learning; and anxiety related to online assessment. Descriptive and inferential (ANOVA, Chi-square, and t test) statistical data analysis were done using SPSS version 23.

RESULTS

A total of 447 student nurses responded. The result shows that most of them, 96% (432) used android phones and 94% (422) owned a mobile. Age was highly influencing mobile learning application (m-learning apps) usage; students of less than 20 years of age used applications more frequently and possessed more educational applications. Majority of them, 84% (377) of them had started using m-learning apps only after COVID. 57.7% (249) commonly used m-learning apps for acquiring nursing knowledge resources, nursing exam preparatory, and drug resources. Students rated high for the interactive nature of these m-learning apps, while abundant learning materials and usage with ease were rated as other attractive features. Sixty-six percent (305) had mostly downloaded these apps from Google Play Store.

CONCLUSION

The findings would help the m-learning application developers to offer customize solutions to address learning gaps that prevail among the South Indian nursing graduates and help with sustainable growth.
