Abstract
Asymptomatic Plasmodium infection raises a problem for the persistent transmission of malaria in low-endemic areas such as Asia. This systematic review was undertaken to estimate the prevalence and proportion of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in Asia. The systematic review was registered at PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022373664). The research followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. A comprehensive search of five databases, Ovid, Scopus, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Embase, was conducted to identify studies of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in Asian countries. The pooled prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection, the pooled proportion of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection among all parasitised individuals, and the associated 95% confidence intervals were estimated using a random-effects model. A total of 916 articles were retrieved, and 87 articles that met the criteria were included in the systematic review. The pooled prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection among enrolled participants in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Western Asia was 5.8%, 9.4%, and 8.4%, respectively. The pooled proportion of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection among all parasitised individuals in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Western Asia was 89.3%, 87.2%, and 64.8%, respectively. There was a low prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection, but there was a high proportion of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection per all parasitised individuals in different parts of Asia. These results may support and facilitate elimination and control programs for asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in Asia.

Abstract
Immunity to malaria has a major role in controlling disease and pathogenesis with cytokine production being involved in almost every phase of the immune response. The present study aimed to assess hematological variables and to measure plasma levels of TNFα, IFNγ and IL10, their ratios, and their relation to parasitemia among patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Hodeidah, Yemen. Forty patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum monoinfection and 40 healthy age and sex-matched controls were enrolled in the study. Parasitological diagnosis was confirmed, and parasite density was estimated. Plasma cytokine levels, hematologic parameters, and the presence of gametocytes were determined. Results revealed higher TNFα, IFNγ and IL10 in patients than in controls. A relatively higher IL10 production was demonstrated by the significantly lower TNFα/IL10 and IFNγ/IL10 ratios in patients than in controls. TNFα and IL10 correlated positively with parasite density. Lower Hb levels, RBC, lymphocyte and platelet counts, and higher neutrophil and reticulocyte counts were observed in patients compared to controls. Reticulocyte count was higher and IFNγ level was lower in the presence of gametocytes. Conclusively, uncomplicated falciparum malaria is associated with the ability to regulate the production of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. This mediates parasite clearance while simultaneously avoiding severe pathology.

Abstract
Background Malaria burden among under-five children living in endemic areas of Yemen is largely unknown due to the lack of community-based studies. Therefore, this study determined the prevalence and risk factors associated with falciparum malaria among under-five children in rural communities of Al-Mahweet governorate, Yemen. Methods This community-based, cross-sectional study recruited 400 under-five children from two rural districts of Al-Mahweet governorate in December 2019. Demographic characteristics (gender, age, education and occupation of the child’s parents, and household size) and risk factors associated with malaria were collected through interviews with children’s caregivers using a structured questionnaire. Finger-prick blood was screened for Plasmodium falciparum and non-falciparum species using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), and duplicate Giemsa-stained thick and thin blood films were examined for malaria parasites. The density of asexual P. falciparum stages was also estimated. Data were then analysed, and the agreement between the results of thick-film microscopy and RDTs for diagnosing falciparum malaria was assessed using the kappa index. Statistical significance was set at a P-value of < 0.05. Results Plasmodium falciparum was prevalent among 9.8% (95% CI 7.0–13.1) of under-five children in the rural communities of Al-Mahweet, with a median asexual parasite density of 763 ± 2606 parasites/μl of blood (range: 132–4280) and low-to-moderate parasitaemia levels. Approximately one-third of microscopy-confirmed cases were gametocyte carriers. Multivariable logistic regression analysis confirmed that age of three years or older (AOR = 5.6, 95% CI 1.6–19.8; P = 0.007), not sleeping under a mosquito net the previous night of the survey (AOR = 8.0, 95% CI 2.4–27.4; P = 0.001), sleeping outdoors at night (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI 2.0–10.0; P < 0.001), and absence of indoor residual spraying (IRS) during the last year (AOR = 4.2, 95% CI 1.9–9.4; P < 0.001) were the independent predictors of falciparum malaria among under-five children in the rural communities of Al-Mahweet. The observed percentage agreement between thick-film microscopy and RDTs was 98.5%, with a very good agreement (k-index = 0.9) between the two methods for falciparum malaria diagnosis that was statistically significant. Conclusion Approximately one in ten under-five children in rural communities of Al-Mahweet is infected with P. falciparum based on microscopy and RDTs. Age of three years or older, not sleeping under mosquito nets, sleeping outdoors at night and absence of IRS can independently predict falciparum malaria among them. The very good agreement between thick-film microscopy and RDTs for diagnosing falciparum malaria in children supports the usefulness of using RDTs in such resource-limited rural communities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Yemen crisis, which has been going on for more than six years, represents one of the most gruesome human plights in the modern history, especially children. OBJECTIVES This research aimed to present a comprehensive view of Yemeni children's studies during the ongoing war period, to come up with a comprehensive base that concerns humanitarians, researchers, decision-makers, and general public at large about the reality of the predicament of Yemeni child. METHOD We searched databases and identified 373 articles, of which 68 were included in this review. Review of literature between 2014 and 2020 is taken from academic sources, multilateral organizations, donors, and governmental and non-governmental organizations. The data are analyzed by date and governorates. RESULTS We chose 68 articles and divided them according to the diseases and health conditions as follows: infectious diseases (15 studies), non-infectious diseases (10 studies), blood-related diseases (7 studies), oral and dental problems (12 studies), accidents and injuries (2 studies), health system (16 studies), family and community (6 studies). Moreover, the studies were divided geographically as follows: 7 studies that were almost comprehensive for all governorates; additional studies were conducted for Amanat Al Asimah (21 studies), Taiz (12 studies), Aden and Al Hudaydah (7 studies for each), Dhamar and Ibb (6 studies for each), Abyan and Lahij (2 study for each). As for Al Bayda, Marib, Sana'a, and Socotra, each of them had one study. CONCLUSION Our assessment revealed that the ongoing Yemen crisis is underrated and largely neglected. The studies conducted so far do match the ground reality both in terms of inclusiveness and numbers.

Abstract
Background Saudi Arabia and Yemen are the only two countries in the Arabian Peninsula that are yet to achieve malaria elimination. Over the past two decades, the malaria control programme in Saudi Arabia has successfully reduced the annual number of malaria cases, with the lowest incidence rate across the country reported in 2014. This study aims to investigate the distribution of residual malaria in Jazan region and to identify potential climatic drivers of autochthonous malaria cases in the region. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out from 1 April 2018 to 31 January 2019 in Jazan region, southwestern Saudi Arabia, which targeted febrile individuals attending hospitals and primary healthcare centres. Participants’ demographic data were collected, including age, gender, nationality, and residence. Moreover, association of climatic variables with the monthly autochthonous malaria cases reported during the period of 2010–2017 was retrospectively analysed. Results A total of 1124 febrile subjects were found to be positive for malaria during the study period. Among them, 94.3 and 5.7% were infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, respectively. In general, subjects aged 18–30 years and those aged over 50 years had the highest (42.7%) and lowest (5.9%) percentages of malaria cases. Similarly, the percentage of malaria-positive cases was higher among males than females (86.2 vs 13.8%), among non-Saudi compared to Saudi subjects (70.6 vs 29.4%), and among patients residing in rural rather than in urban areas (89.8 vs 10.2%). A total of 407 autochthonous malaria cases were reported in Jazan region between 2010 and 2017. Results of zero-inflated negative binomial regression analysis showed that monthly average temperature and relative humidity were the significant climatic determinants of autochthonous malaria in the region. Conclusion Malaria remains a public health problem in most governorates of Jazan region. The identification and monitoring of malaria transmission hotspots and predictors would enable control efforts to be intensified and focused on specific areas and therefore expedite the elimination of residual malaria from the whole region. Abstract
Vector-borne parasitic infectious diseases are important causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Malaria is one of the most common vector-borne parasitic infection and is caused by five Plasmodium species, namely P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. knowlesi. Epidemiologically, differences in the patterns of malaria cases, causative agent, disease severity, antimicrobial resistance, and mortality exist across diverse geographical regions. The world witnessed 229 million malaria cases which resulted in 409,000 deaths in 2019 alone. Although malaria cases are reported from 87 countries globally, Africa bears the brunt of these infections and deaths as nearly 94% of total malaria cases and deaths occur in this continent, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the Middle East Region countries are malaria-free as no indigenous cases of infection have been described in recent years. However, imported cases of malaria continue to occur as some of these countries. Indeed, the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have large expatriate population originating from malaria endemic countries. In this review, the current status and epidemiology of malaria in the Middle East Region countries and other malaria-endemic countries that are home to a large migrant workforce being employed in Middle East Region countries are discussed.

Abstract
Background Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease affecting the blood cell. As a chronic disease, schistosomiasis particularly impacts on the human host’s haematological profile. We assessed here the impact of urogenital schistosomiasis on the full blood counts (FBC) as proxy diagnostic tool for schistosomiasis. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among school children living in Lambaréné, Gabon. Schistosomiasis status was determined using urine filtration technique. EDTA blood samples were analysed using a Pentra ABX 60® analyzer. Results Compared to their infection-free counterparts, school children infected with Schistosoma haematobium displayed an altered FBC profile, with changes in all three blood cell lines. Adjusted for praziquantel intake, soil-transmitted helminthic infections and Plasmodium falciparum infection status, schistosomiasis was independently associated with a decreasing trend of mean haemoglobin (β = − 0.20 g/dL, p-value = 0.08) and hematocrit (β = − 0.61%, p-value = 0.06) levels, a lower mean MCV (β = − 1.50µm3, p-value = 0.02) and MCH (β = − 0.54 pg, p-value = 0.04), and higher platelet (β = 28.2 103/mm3, p-value = 0.002) and leukocyte (β = 1.13 103/mm3, p-value = 0.0003) counts, respectively. Conclusions Schistosomiasis is associated with a characteristic FBC profile of schoolchildren living in Lambaréné, indicating the necessity to consider schistosomiasis as a single cause of disease, or a co-morbidity, when interpreting FBC in endemic areas.
