Abstract
Purpose As lifestyle changes, there is an increasing number of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in China. The present study aimed to investigate the predictive value of the lipid accumulation product (LAP) for T2DM in Chinese elderlies over 65 years. Methods The present cross-sectional study recruited 2,092 adults from communities of Pudong New Area of Shanghai. Questionnaires were filled and anthropometric and laboratory examinations were completed by all participants. The predictive value of different risk factors for T2DM was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC). Results LAP was found to be closely related to T2DM (adjusted OR: 0.613, 95% CI: 0.581-0.645). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), LAP, and urea nigrogen (UN) were associated with T2DM in females, whereas FPG, LAP, neck circumference (NC) were associated with T2DM in males. When the cut-off value was 33.8, LAP displayed the optimal predictive performance. A gender difference was observed with an LAP of 37.95 demonstrating the best predictive value in males (AUC = 0.604, 95% CI: 0.577-0.652) and 60.2 in females (AUC = 0.617, 95% CI: 0.574-0.660), respectively. Conclusion LAP is more significantly associated with the risk of T2DM in elderlies than FPG, UN or NC, and it serves as a strong predictor of T2DM. However, this is impacted by FPG and neck circumference to a certain extent. Future large-scale studies are needed to confirm its efficacy in predicting diabetes.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most frequent endocrine illnesses, often accompanied by visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Visceral adiposity is an accurate predictor of MetS and cardiometabolic risk. This study aims to evaluate different anthropometric indices that can be used in PCOS and MetS risk assessment. A total of 66 women with PCOS (50%) and 66 controls (50%) were included, and clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated. The body mass index (BMI), body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), dysfunctional adiposity index (DAI), lipid accumulation (LAP) index, and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were calculated. The means of all indices were higher in the PCOS group (p < 0.05). The marker with the lowest discriminatory ability for PCOS and MetS was ABSI (AUC = 0.762 and AUC = 0.714, respectively, p = 0.000). According to the multivariate logistic regression model, the VAI and WC are strong predictors of PCOS (AUC, 98%; accuracy, 92%; sensitivity, 92%; and specificity, 91%), and WC, LAP index, and BRI are strong predictors of MetS (AUC, 0.95%; accuracy, 86%; sensitivity, 83%; and specificity, 88%). The use of different anthropometric indices in the detection of PCOS and MetS may allow for early diagnosis and treatment, and are simple and cost-effective.

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the lipid accumulation product (LAP)'s accuracy and predictive value for identifying metabolic syndrome (MS) in the general Chinese population compared with other obesity indicators. Baseline survey information from a population-based cohort study carried out in Shanghai's Songjiang District was used in this research. Odds ratios (OR) and a 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained by logistic regression. The ability of each variable to detect MS was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). The optimum cut-off point for each indicator was selected using Youden's index. The survey involved 35,446 participants in total. In both genders, the prevalence of MS rose as the LAP increased (p < 0.001). The LAP's AUC was 0.901 (95%CI: 0.895-0.906) in males and 0.898 (95%CI: 0.893-0.902) in females, making it substantially more predictive of MS than other variables (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR). The optimal cutoff point of the LAP for men and women was 36.04 (Se: 81.91%, Sp: 81.06%) and 34.95 (Se: 80.93%, Sp: 83.04%). The Youden index of the LAP was 0.64 for both sexes. Our findings imply that the LAP, compared to other obesity markers in China, is a more accurate predictor of MS.

Abstract
Objective Hyperandrogenaemia and insulin resistance (IR) are the main characteristics of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Here, we study to find appropriate markers predicting IR and hyperandrogenaemia of women with PCOS in northwest China. Methods According to body mass index (BMI), 953 patients with PCOS were divided into two groups. All the patients underwent physical examination and ultrasonography and collected elbow vein blood. Their BMI, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), LAP, VAI, homeostasis model assessment index of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and free androgen index (FAI) were calculated. Each group (normal weight and obesity/overweight) was further divided into two subgroups according to their HOMA-IR and FAI: the IR+ subgroup/IR- subgroup and FAI+ subgroup/FAI- subgroup. Furthermore, we compared the clinical indices, hormone levels, and metabolic makers separately between these groups. The correlations between these parameters and HOMA-IR or FAI were tested; sensitivity, specificity, and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were calculated. Results In the obesity/overweight group, the VAI (best cut-off value: 2.27, area under the curve (AUC) = 0.699) and LAP (best cut-off value: 45.54, AUC = 0.680) were sensitive predictors of IR (sensitivity = 72% and sensitivity = 67%). Additionally, the VAI (best cut-off value: 2.13, AUC = 0.624) and LAP (best cut-off value: 51.18, AUC = 0.582) were sensitive predictors of FAI (sensitivity = 87% and sensitivity = 64%). In the normal weight group, BMI could preferably predict HOMA-IR (AUC = 0.717, best cut-off value: 21.62) and HOMA-IR could preferably predict FAI (best cut-off value: 2.11, AUC = 0.648). Conclusion Our data indicated that the VAI and LAP may contribute to the early identification of IR and hyperandrogenaemia in the obesity/overweight patients of PCOS. In normal weight PCOS, BMI was a better predictor to IR, and HOWA-IR was a better predictor to FAI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovarian syndrome has emerged as a cardiometabolic disorder and aim of this study was to evaluate various surrogate indices and their diagnostic potential to determine the most convenient and cost-effective marker of IR, CVD, and MetS in these women. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-five PCOS women and 45 age matched healthy women were enrolled. Measures included anthropometric and biochemical parameters, BMI, WHR, WHtR, BAI, VAI, LAP, HOMA-IR, and lipid profile. RESULTS LAP has highest AUC value 0.781 with cut-off value = 39.73 (sensitivity = 75% and specificity = 79.5%) for predicting IR and AUC value 0.83 with cut-off value = 35.63 (sensitivity = 94.4% and specificity = 77.3%) for predicting MetS in women with PCOS. LAP had statistically strong positive correlation with WC, BMI, WHR, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, TC, TG, and SBP. CONCLUSIONS LAP is a powerful and reliable marker for assessment of IR, CVD, and MetS risk in young Indian women with PCOS.

Abstract
Introduction Lipid accumulation product (LAP), calculated from waist circumference (WC) and triglycerides (TG), is a novel index that correlates cardiovascular disease. We aimed to investigate the relationship between LAP and target organ damage (TOD) in elderly Chinese community-dwelling individuals. Materials and Methods We enrolled 3363 participants whose age was ≥65 years old. TOD, including left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), arterial stiffness (AS), lower extremity atherosclerotic (LEA), micro-albuminuria (MAU) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), was measured using standard methods. LAP was calculated as (WC–65) × TG in men and (WC–58) × TG in women. Both quartiles and continuation of LAP were analyzed. Results Age-sex adjusted partial correlation analysis showed that LAP was significantly associated with CVD risk factors. With the first quartile (Q1) as a reference, in univariate logistic regression, the fourth quartile (Q4) of LAP was associated with all TOD. In multivariate model, Q4 of LAP was only associated with an increased risk of AS (odds ratio (OR) = 1.88, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.37–2.58, Pfor trend< 0.001), MAU (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.01–1.75, Pfor trend= 0.02) and CKD (OR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.39–4.12, Pfor trend< 0.001). But, Q4 of LAP was not associated with an increased risk of LVH (OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 0.85–1.65, Pfor trend= 0.25) or LEA (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.58–1.29, Pfor trend= 0.96). Similar associations were found when analyzed continuously. Conclusion The novel metabolic parameter LAP is significantly and independently associated with an increased risk of arterial stiffness, chronic kidney disease and micro-albuminuria in Chinese community-dwelling elderly individuals.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of lipid accumulation product (LAP) in hypertension in Chinese population older than 65 years. A total of 2092 adults from the communities in Pudong New Area of Shanghai were included in this cross-sectional study. The participants filled in questionnaire and received anthropometric and laboratory examinations. The receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) was used to analyze the predictive value of different risk factors in hypertension. Results showed that LAP was closely related to hypertension (adjusted OR: 1.011, 95% CI: 1.007-1.015). In females, LAP, fasting blood glucose (FPG), and body mass index (BMI) were associated with hypertension; in males, triglycerides (TG) and waist circumference (WC) were related to hypertension. LAP (AUC = 0.655, 95% CI: 0.632-0.679) was better than neck circumference (NC) and BMI in predicting hypertension. When the cutoff value was 33.5, LAP had the best predictive performance. In males, LAP at 36.72 and 56.76 had the best predictive performance in males (AUC = 0.663, 95% CI: 0.629-0.697) and females (AUC = 0.650, 95% CI: 0.618-0.682), respectively. In conclusion, LAP is a risk factor of hypertension in the elderly. For hypertension, BMI, FPG, and LAP have favorable predictive performance in females, and WC and TG have better predictive performance in males.

Abstract
Background:Lipid accumulation product (LAP) is one of the indices that can demonstrate cardiovascularrisk factors according to international studies. Aim: To evaluate relationship between LAP, visceral obesity and different cardio vascular risk factors among sample of obese Egyptian Women. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional observational study included 350 obese Egyptian women; aged 25- 55 years. They were subjected to blood pressure and anthropometric assessment (weight, height and waist circumference), abdominal ultrasound (visceral fat) and laboratory tests (fasting blood sugar and lipid profile).Results: The majority of the participated women had wide WC (88.9%) and increased visceral fat (80.6%). Hyperglycemia was present among (47.4%), hypertension among 42.6%, high triglycerides among 26.6% and low HDL among 44.3%. The odds of obtaining LAP >80.74 cm.mmol/L (4th quartile) is 2.7 times higher in individuals with hypertension(BP > 130/85),and 6.79 times higher in individuals with visceral fat ≥ 5 cm. Depending on the visceral fat as a standard for classification of visceral obesity (>5 cm for women), revealed that the AUCs of LAP was 0.752 (95% CI 0.697–0.806) in women. The cutoff point of LAP;for prediction of visceral obesity among Egyptian women, was 61.69; using ROC analysis; with sensitivity 68% and specificity 75% and PPV/NPV 1.05 and accuracy 71.5% .Conclusion: LAP index had significant correlations with visceral obesity and hypertension. The cutoff point of LAP 61.69 can be used to predict visceral obesity among Egyptian women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of conditions that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is related to genetic background, dietary habits, and lifestyle. Anthropometric indices and lipid parameters have been shown to be simple and useful tools in clinical practice for predicting MetS. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the differential magnitudes of anthropometric characteristics (waist circumference and body mass index [BMI]) and lipid parameters, namely, lipid accumulation product (LAP), cardiometabolic index (CMI), and Castelli Risk Index (CRI-I), to estimate MetS, usingappropriate cut-off values, among adults from a public hospital in Yucatan, Mexico. METHODS A cross-sectional study among 250 adults (77 men, 173 women) was carried out in the Regional High Speciality Hospital of the Yucatan Peninsula (HRAEPY) in Merida, Yucatan. MetS was diagnosed using standard criteria (central obesity, arterial hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia), and derived parameters (LAP, CMI, and CRI-I) were calculated. Binary logistic regression analysis-based receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves were used to predict MetS. RESULTS Of the 250 participants, 48% had MetS. High prevalences of overweight (35.2%) and obesity (48.8%) were found in the sample. The CMI and LAP were found to be the best parameters in the prediction of MetS in men and women. The optimal cut-off values of the parameters were higher in men and decreased with advancing age. CONCLUSION The CMI and LAP were shown to be the most effective indicators to diagnose MetS among adults from Yucatan, Mexico.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria, previous studies in Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) reported a low prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS); however, the same population predisposed to developing pre-MS. Early identification and treatment of individuals with MS and pre-MS are imperative to prevent their adverse consequences. Moreover, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was not accurate in detecting pathoglycemia in women with PCOS as they have shown characteristically postprandial abnormalities in the carbohydrate metabolism. Therefore, we aimed to compare the discriminative performance of various indices for identifying MS and pre-MS/MS (pre-MS and MS) using the updated Chinese Diabetes Society (uCDS) criteria in Chinese women with PCOS. METHODS 1083 Chinese women with PCOS were included in this study. We measured and evaluated 8 indices in all individuals. Based on the uCDS criteria for MS, patients who had no less than two components of MS but did not meet the criteria for the diagnosis of MS were considered as having pre-MS. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under ROC curves (AUCs) levels were used to assess the accuracy of each index in detecting MS and pre-MS/MS. RESULTS Among the 8 indices assessed, the lipid accumulation product (LAP) provided the highest AUCs for detecting MS and pre-MS/MS, followed by CVAI, WTI, VAI, TyG, TG/HDL, WC, and BMI. The optimal cutoff points determined for LAP were 45.13 (sensitivity 88.0%, specificity 88.4%, and Youden index 0.764) for MS and 28.01 (sensitivity 87.5%, specificity 80.7%, and Youden index 0.681) for pre-MS/MS, respectively. CONCLUSIONS uCDS criteria are reasonably more suitable for detecting MS and pre-MS in Chinese women with PCOS. Based on this criterion, LAP is the best index for the diagnosis of MS and pre-MS/MS in Chinese women with PCOS, out of the 8 obesity and lipid-related indices assessed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia and central obesity are the main components of metabolic syndrome, which represent important risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The lipid accumulation product (LAP) index has been shown in studies as an efficient marker of metabolic syndrome in general adult population and its applicability in HIV-infected population is not discussed. We aimed to assess the accuracy of the LAP index to identify metabolic syndrome in people living with HIV. METHODS It is a cross-sectional study with 141 HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy, conducted in a reference centre of infectious diseases in southeast Brazil. Evaluations included LAP index, anthropometric measurements and clinical and laboratorial variables. Metabolic syndrome was defined by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. RESULTS The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in our sample was 10.6%. A positive and significant correlation was found between the metabolic syndrome and LAP (r=0.401; P<0.01), metabolic syndrome and body mass index (r=0.361; P<0.01) and metabolic syndrome and waist circumference (r=0.427; P<0.01) in our sample. The analysis of the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve revealed that the best cut-off value for LAP index to define metabolic syndrome was 59.4 (sensitivity 80%, specificity 79% and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.875. In female and male, analysis of the ROC curve revealed that the best cut-off value for LAP index to define metabolic syndrome was 56.3 (sensitivity 100%, specificity 82% and AUC of 0.929) and 52.0 (sensitivity 78%, specificity 74% and AUC of 0.838), respectively. CONCLUSION Despite the low prevalence of metabolic syndrome in our sample, the ROC curves analyzes demonstrated a good diagnostic accuracy as an additional screening tool of metabolic syndrome according to the IDF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the plasma cytokine levels during T cell-mediated inflammatory responses and compare the metabolic markers between overweight and obese perimenopausal women without systemic diseases. METHODS Sixty perimenopausal women were divided into two groups (overweight and obese). Participants in both groups had their waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) measured and blood samples collected for the evaluation of estradiol, fasting glucose, leptin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, IL-17A levels, and lipid profile. RESULTS In univariate analysis, women with obesity showed increased WHtR, fasting glucose, leptin, and IL-6 (p < 0.05) levels; however, significant differences were not observed in IL-10 or IL-17A (p > 0.05) levels. In the receiver operating characteristic curve, the highest areas under the curve were shown for leptin (0.856) and IL-6 (0.706). IL-6 levels correlated with both hs-CRP (r = 0.302, p = 0.020) and leptin (r = 0.294, p = 0.022). However, in multivariate analysis, IL-6 was not associated with a greater likelihood of obesity (OR = 1.61; 95% CI: 0.82-3.15; p = 0.16), when potential confounders were considered. CONCLUSION IL-6 levels varied between overweight and obese perimenopausal women, and this association was weaker when adjusted for other clinical variables.

Abstract
AIM To investigate circulating hormonal, metabolic and inflammatory biomarker profiles in obese and non-obese middle-aged women. METHODS A total of 110 women, aged 40-60 years, were included in this cross-sectional study. Patients were allocated, according to the occurrence of menopause and body mass index (BMI), into four groups: PM0 (premenopausal non-obese), PM1 (premenopausal obese), M0 (postmenopausal non-obese), and M1 (postmenopausal obese). Serum levels of gonadotropins, sex hormones, lipid markers, leptin, hs-CRP and interleukin-6 were obtained using either colorimetric or immunoenzymatic assays. Univariate and correlation analyses were performed among all clinical and laboratorial parameters. Principal component analysis was used to characterize subsets of biomarkers, which had their discriminatory capacity tested using discriminant function analysis. RESULTS Levels of gonadotropins and female sex hormones were similar between PM0 and PM1 and between M0 and M1 (p > 0.05), all of them varied between PM0 and M0 (p < 0.05), but only estradiol was significantly altered in the comparison between PM1 and M1 (p = 0.027). Regarding metabolic markers, leptin was lower in PM0 than in M0 (p = 0.010) and higher in M1 than in M0 (p = 0.046). In premenopausal women, BMI correlated only to leptin, while it correlated to several other markers in postmenopausal women. A combination of FSH and leptin serum levels significantly discriminated the four groups (Wilks's lambda < 0.001, in canonical functions 1 and 2). CONCLUSION A combined analysis of hormonal biomarkers may potentially distinguish obese from non-obese women with distinct menopause status. Further research is thus required to clarify the clinical significance of such findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations among visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), body fat percentage (%), and android/gynoid ratio (A/G ratio) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and verify if the parameters representative of visceral obesity correlate with and exhibit the same frequency as body composition variables; anthropometric indices; and metabolic, hormonal, and inflammatory parameters. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study that included 94 women with PCOS. Hormonal, metabolic, and inflammatory parameters were analyzed in all women. Free androgen index (FAI) and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR), as well as LAP, VAI, and anthropometric indices, were calculated. The regions of interest (ROIs) in body composition and body composition indices were evaluated using a dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Overall, 32 variables were selected as markers of body fat distribution. RESULTS Among the 32 markers evaluated, 29 correlated with LAP, whereas 25 correlated with VAI, 19 with body fat (%), and 30 with A/G ratio. Additionally, some markers correlated with the four adiposity indices evaluated: ROIs, except for total mass and leg fat (%); body composition (body mass index, waist circumference, and hip circumference) indices; fasting insulin; and C-reactive protein. CONCLUSION LAP and VAI may be sensitive measures for screening and preventing metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in PCOS, with LAP being more sensitive than VAI, and the A/G ratio may be more sensitive than body fat percentage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The lipid accumulation product (LAP) index is an abdominal adiposity marker. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the cardiovascular risk of primary healthcare users through the LAP index and correlate it with anthropometric and biochemical indicators. DESIGN AND SETTING Cross-sectional study in primary care units in a city in northeastern Brazil. METHODS The subjects responded to a structured questionnaire that contained questions about their sociodemographic condition, and then underwent an anthropometric nutritional assessment. The LAP index values were expressed as three degrees of cardiovascular risk intensity: high risk (above the 75th percentile), moderate risk (between the 25th and 75th percentiles) and low risk (below the 25th percentile). RESULTS The median LAP index was 52.5 cm.mmol/l (range: 28.2-86.6), and there was no statistically significant difference between the sexes: 57.7 cm.mmol/l (24.5-91.1) and 49.5 cm.mmol/l (29.8-85.2) for females and males, respectively (P = 0.576). Among all the subjects, 67.2% were overweight and there was a statistically significant difference in mean LAP index between those who were and those who were not overweight. Statistically significant differences in anthropometric and biochemical markers for cardiovascular risk were observed among individuals who had higher LAP index values. There were significant correlations between the LAP index and all of the biochemical variables. CONCLUSIONS These significant correlations between the LAP index and the traditional biochemical risk markers may be useful within conventional clinical practice, for cardiovascular risk screening in primary healthcare.

Abstract
PURPOSE Insulin resistance (IR) is a common feature of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Body fat indices can be predictive markers of IR. This study is aimed to predict IR in Chinese women with PCOS of different body types based on body fat indices. METHODS A total of 723 women diagnosed with PCOS according to Rotterdam criteria were recruited in this study and were further divided into two groups based on their BMI. All participants underwent physical examinations and ultrasound; and blood was collected from them on the days 3-5 of the menstrual cycle. Their BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), lipid accumulation product (LAP) index, visceral adiposity index (VAI), and the homeostasis model assessment index of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. The correlations between body fat indices and HOMA-IR and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were evaluated. RESULTS In normal weight group (BMI < 24, n = 333), VAI (best cut-off value: 1.681, area under curve (AUC) = 0.754, P < 0.01) and LAP index (best cut-off value: 18.53, AUC = 0.734, P < 0.001) were the reliable indicators of IR based on HOMA-IR ≥ 2.77, while in overweight/obese group (BMI ≥ 24, n = 390), the BMI, WC, WHtR and LAP index had a significant correlation with HOMA-IR. The representative markers to assess IR were BMI (best cut-off value: 26.43, AUC = 0.644, P = 0.001) and WHtR (best cut-off value: 0.544, AUC = 0.604, P = 0.021). CONCLUSIONS Body fat indices are predictive markers of IR in Chinese PCOS women, especially in those with normal weight.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency has been related with metabolic alterations in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). As well, hyperactivation of adrenal axis can be programmed early in life and could be related later with PCOS development. Our aim was to establish the relationship between vitamin D and adrenal parameters with metabolic alterations and inflammation markers in PCOS. In 73 patients and 33 controls, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D), total and bioavailable testosterone (TT and bioT), androstenedione (A4), SHBG, cortisol, insulin, and C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were determined; HOMA and lipid accumulation product (LAP) index were calculated. All parameters were higher in patients than in controls, except for SHBG and 25-OH-D which were lower. Binary regression analysis showed that differences in TT, bioT, A4, insulin and HOMA were independent of body mass index and waist circumference but SHBG, hs-CRP, LAP and 25-OH-D were related to body weight and fat distribution. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that cortisol and 25-OH-D could be associated to PCOS development. Correlations found between LAP and insulin, HOMA and hs-CRP confirm it is a good indicator of metabolic complications. Vitamin D and cortisol association to PCOS development justifies future research to understand the role of vitamin D in PCOS and analyze patient's perinatal history and its possible relationship with hyperactivation of adrenal axis in adult life.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the plasma level of 8-isoprostanes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. To also investigate whether there is a relationship between 8-isoprostanes and several cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS A total of 125 women with polycystic ovary syndrome and 169 healthy women were enrolled in this case-control study. 8-Isoprostanes and different parameters were measured in all subjects. Patients were evaluated for the presence of polycystic ovary syndrome according to the Rotterdam Consensus Conference criteria. RESULTS 8-Isoprostanes levels were significantly higher in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (138.4 ± 104.1 pg/mL) compared with control group (68.6 ± 34.3 pg/mL) (p < 0.001). The mean of triglycerides, lipid accumulation product, C-reactive protein, homocysteine, insulin, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance were significantly higher in polycystic ovary syndrome patients with high 8-isoprostanes than those with normal 8-isoprostanes (p < 0.05). The Pearson correlation analyses showed that 8-isoprostanes levels in polycystic ovary syndrome group had a positive correlation with waist circumference, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, homocysteine, insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome have higher 8-isoprostanes levels and it is associated with several cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
An epidemics of obesity in the world during recent two decades, has already led to increased prevalence of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, oncological diseases, etc. Obesity is assessed with a variety of indexes, and recently the number of such tools was added with the two additional: visceral obesity index (VOI) and index of lipid products deposition (ILPD). The aim of the study — evaluation of the relation of anthropometric parameters with coronary heart disease. Materials of the study were representative selections from 13 regions of the ESSE-RF trial. In analysis of associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), relation of WC to height (WC/height x 100), VOI and IPLD with correction on the age and region, it was found that all studied parameters are significantly correlated with ischemic heart disease, however when the main risk factors were added, only two remained — odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for: WC/height×100 — 1,030 (1,019;1,040) (р<0,0001) and VOI — 1,053 (1,020;1,087) (р<0,0015) in males and WC/height×100 — 1,027 (1,021;1,033) (р<0,0001) and VOI — 1,052 (1,022;1,083) (р<0,0007) in females. It is important to note almost identical values of odds ratio for the indexes in both sexes. Reliability of the models obtained is confirmed by ROC analysis, where the area under curve for males was 0,68 and for females 0,67. The results witness on legitimacy of search for novel parameters of obesity that would have good reproducibility and are also simple and easy to use.

Abstract
Background Lipid accumulation product (LAP), a simple and low-cost tool, is a novel
biomarker of central lipid accumulation and represents a potential surrogate
marker for atherogenic lipoprotein profile. However, its association with
lipoprotein subfractions has not been described in the literature. Objective To determine whether LAP index could be used as a marker of low- and
high-density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL) size in Brazilian individuals. Methods This cross-sectional study included patients (n = 351) of both sexes and age
between 30-74 years. Clinical and sociodemographic data and family history
of diseases were evaluated. Lipoprotein size, and levels of total
cholesterol (TC), lipoproteins, apolipoprotein AI and B (APO AI/APO B),
glucose, insulin, insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) and non-esterified
fatty acids (NEFA) were assessed in blood samples. LAP was calculated by the
formulas [(waist circumference[cm]-58)
× (triglycerides[mmol/L]) for women and
(waist circumference [cm]-65) ×
(triglycerides [mmol/L]) for men]. The
association between LAP and metabolic parameters were tested by linear trend
(general linear model, GLM test) before and after multiple adjustments for
potential confounders (sex, age, smoking, statin, fibrate, and hypoglycemic
drugs) at significant level p < 0.05. Results LAP was positively associated with TC, APO B, NEFA, glucose, insulin and
HOMA-IR values, and negatively associated with HDL-C. Higher central lipid
accumulation was corelated with higher percentage of intermediate HDL and of
small LDL and HDL and less amount of large HDL. LDL size was also reduced in
greater LAP index values. The negative impact of LAP was maintained after
adjustment for multiple variables. Conclusion LAP was robustly associated with atherogenic profile of lipoprotein
subfractions, independently of multiple confounders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. The evidence in support of low-grade inflammation in PCOS as an etiology is emerging. Inflammation is likely to be associated with other prominent aspects of PCOS including insulin resistance (IR) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is considered as a strong marker of inflammation. OBJECTIVES Evaluation of the relation between serum IL-18 and atherosclerotic CVD (ASCVD) risk in Egyptian lean females with PCO. METHODS This study included control group of healthy lean normally menstruating females, lean PCOS group (BMI < 25 kg/m2), and obese PCOS group (BMI > 25 kg/m2) presented with infertility and diagnosed according to Rotterdam criteria. Measurements of serum lipid profile, IR, and IL-18 were done. RESULTS Lipid accumulation product (LAP), IR and ASCVD risk were significantly higher in PCOS patients (lean and obese) compared to controls and in obese compared to lean. Serum IL-18 was significantly higher in the PCOV groups compared to the controls and correlated directly with LAP, IR and ASCVD risk. CONCLUSION IL-18 is elevated in PCOS patients even in lean ones and is correlated with IR and ASCVD risk.

From June 2012 to January 2013, consecutive patients ≥40 years of age who underwent cerebral vascular imaging for various medical reasons were enrolled in this study. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the correlation of VAI and LAP with the risk of ICAS. In total, 845 patients were included in the study. The prevalence of ICAS gradually increased in females and in all patients with advancing tertiles of VAI or LAP. After adjusting for potential risks, both the VAI and LAP were related to ICAS in females [VAI: odds ratio (OR) = 3.25, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) = 1.17–9.03, P = 0.024; LAP: OR = 4.11, 95%CI = 1.39–12.12, P = 0.011; tertiles 3 vs. 1]. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) were 74.7%, 45.5%, and 84.4% for VAI (cut-off: 1.71) and 79.3%, 40.5%, and 84.1% for LAP (cut-off: 23.99). The same relationships in males were not significant. Both VAI and LAP were closely associated with an increased risk of ICAS in middle-aged and elderly Chinese females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a highly prevalent endocrinopathy is currently being designated as chronic low grade inflammatory state. IL-1β, IL-1Ra and FABP1 are critical mediators of inflammatory processes and are speculated to play a role in the pathogenesis of PCOS. The aim of this study was to study the association of IL-β, IL-1Ra and FABP1 gene polymorphisms with PCOS and related metabolic features. SUBJECTS 95 PCOS and 45 age matched healthy control subjects were enrolled in this study. METHODS Polymorphism in genes IL-1β, IL-1Ra and FABP1 was studied by PCR, PCR-RFLP and sequencing methods, respectively. Hormonal and lipid profiles were evaluated for all the subjects. RESULTS Hormonal and lipid profiles showed significant differences between PCOS and control subjects. Allele and genotype frequencies of IL-1β, IL-1Ra and FABP1 gene polymorphisms did not vary between the control and PCOS group. However, T allele of C[-511]T variant of IL-1β, allele II in intron 2 of IL-1Ra and A allele of A/G variant of FABP1 (rs2197076) showed significant association with many metabolic features associated with PCOS. CONCLUSIONS Polymorphism in genes encoding cytokines and proteins involved in lipid metabolism can provide insights into the genetics of the disease and may contribute to assess the associated risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome (MetS) associated with PCOS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE ADAMTS-1 is a matrix metalloproteinase which cleaves versican in the cumulus oocyte complex under the effect of luteinizing hormone surge in the periovulatory period. Altered levels may have a role in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We aimed to determine the serum versican and ADAMTS-1 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif-1) levels in PCOS patients and compare the results with healthy controls. METHODS Thirty-eight patients with PCOS and forty healthy controls aged between 15 and 22 years were included in the study. They were sampled according to their basal hormone, serum versican, and ADAMTS-1 levels. Serum versican and ADAMTS-1 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify the independent risk factors of PCOS. RESULTS Serum versican levels were significantly decreased in the PCOS group when compared with the controls. The best versican cut-off value for PCOS was calculated to be 33.65 with 76.74% sensitivity and 52.94% specificity. Serum versican levels, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index, a Ferriman-Gallwey score higher than 8, and oligomenorrhea were the strongest predictors of PCOS. Serum versican levels were significantly decreased in PCOS patients. Besides, serum ADAMTS-1 and versican levels were significantly and positively correlated with each other. CONCLUSION Serum versican levels were significantly decreased in patients with PCOS. This suggests a possible role of versican in ovulatory dysfunction and in the pathogenesis of PCOS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess thiol/disulphide homeostasis and lipid accumulation product index, and to determine whether they are associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk or not in overweight adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN Case-control study. SETTING Education and Research Hospital. PATIENTS Group 1: 43 overweight+PCOS, Group 2: 45 normal weight+PCOS, Group 3: 27 overweight adolescents and Group 4: 96 age-matched, normal weight healthy controls. INTERVENTIONS Serum lipid profiles, hormonal parameters and thiol/disulphide homeostasis were measured. Lipid accumulation index (LAP index) and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) were calculated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The relation between thiol/disulphide homeostasis and LAP index, and increased CVD risk were evaluated in overweight adolescents with PCOS. RESULTS Native and total thiol levels were significantly lower in overweight+PCOS adolescents when compared with both normal weight PCOS and control adolescents (P = 0·002). LAP index values were significantly higher in Group 1 when compared separately with the rest of the three groups (P < 0·001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed serum total thiol levels of lower than 405·45 μmol/l were independently associated with increased risk of CVD in overweight PCOS adolescents (OR: 1·019, 95% CI: 1·001-1·036). In addition, a LAP index greater than 21·54 was also associated with increased CVD risk in overweight PCOS adolescents (OR: 1·270, 95% CI: 1·174-1·374). CONCLUSION In conclusion, we suggest that increased LAP index and decreased total thiol levels may contribute to the increased CVD risk in overweight adolescents with PCOS.
