The "One Health" approach in the face of Covid-19: how radical should it be?

Uncovering associations between interest in One Health and pre-existing conditions and behaviours: Evidence from a UK survey

This paper endeavours to unveil individual characteristics associated with an interest in One Health. Through the distribution of an online survey randomly distributed among the United Kingdom population, we discovered significant correlations between pre-existing attitudes towards and relationships with nature and animals and interest in One Health, which is quantified by the number of additional pages of One Health information participants agreed to view at the survey's conclusion. Additionally, individuals with poorer mental health demonstrated a higher level of interest in One Health. The findings suggest that interest in One Health and people's connections with nature and animals are driven by the same personal preferences. These insights point towards the potential for more targeted communication strategies to specific groups, facilitating more effective promotion of the One Health concept.

What Do We Know About the Smallpox Virus? A Journey Between Clinic and Therapy

PURPOSE

Modern research is increasingly focusing on the study of new viruses and the re-emergence of past microbes, such as Coronaviruses, particularly Sars-Cov2 that was responsible for the very recent pandemic.

METHODS AND RESULTS

This infection manifested itself and still continues to manifest as a severe respiratory syndrome. The main discriminator of whether or not one succeeds in overcoming this infection may depend on a great many factors, but the main one is definitely determined by vaccination, which has minimized hospitalizations and more severe syndromes.

CONCLUSION

Recently, a new virus, the monkeypox virus, which was previously confined to Central and West Africa but is now gradually spreading to more than 30 countries including the United States of America, where such an infection is not endemic, is coming forward again.

Pharmacological Agents with Antiviral Activity against Monkeypox Infection

Monkeypox infection is caused by a virus of the genus Orthopoxvirus, a member of the Poxviridae family. Monkeypox virus is transmitted from individual to individual through contact with lesions, body fluids, and respiratory droplets. The infection caused by monkeypox is usually a self-limited disease with mild symptoms lasting 2 to 4 weeks. Monkeypox typically presents with fever, rash, and enlarged lymph nodes. New vaccines have recently been authorized for the prevention of monkeypox infection, whereas there are no specific pharmacological antiviral treatments for monkeypox infection. However, because the viruses which cause adult smallpox and monkeypox are similar, antiviral drugs developed in the past have also shown efficacy against monkeypox. In this review, we highlight the in vitro and clinical evidence found in the literature on the efficacy and safety of pharmacological agents with antiviral activity against monkeypox infection and the different regulatory aspects of countries.

Who is the biological patient? A new gradational and dynamic model for one health medicine

One Health medicine aims to improve health by focusing on the relations between the health of humans, animals, and the environment. However, One Health does not provide a clear idea of these relations, which are still represented as conceptually separated and not as one health, as the name implies. Inspired by holobiont research, I suggest a new model and conceptual framework for One Health that expands the notion of the biological patient by providing a gradational and dynamic understanding of environments, patients, and their relations. This new model conceptualizes humans and non-humans, individual organisms, and collectives, as belonging to one system that allows for more or less inclusive understandings of patients. As such, it resolves the conceptual tensions of different One Health approaches and supports the implementation of One Health as an interdisciplinary research field.

Monkeypox Epidemic: A Throwback From Smallpox Eradication

The emergence of microbial diseases has become a major concern for humans. In the recent past, we have noticed the emergence and re-emergence of several microbes that include coronaviruses (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus {SARS-CoV}, Middle-East respiratory syndrome coronavirus {MERS-CoV}, SARS-CoV-2), and others like Zika virus, Nipah virus, Influenza virus, and Ebola virus. These microbes have been noted to spill over from animals into humans. Several such microbes which were previously restricted to wild animals are now becoming responsible for infections in humans and have spread across the borders and resulted in pandemics. It has been more than two years since the discovery of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and we are still struggling to cope-up with it and live normal lives. Recently, the monkeypox virus, which was confined to West and Central African countries, and caused endemic infections in monkeys and humans was associated with human infections in non-endemic regions like the United States of America (USA) and more than 30 other countries. Therefore, in this editorial, we attempt to put the spotlight on the monkeypox virus that is currently threatening to cause another widespread pandemic.

From human-centric digital health to digital One Health: Crucial new directions for mutual flourishing

This brief communication puts forward an argument for expanding the concept of ‘digital health’ to that of ‘digital One Health’ by going beyond a human-centric approach to incorporating nonhuman agents, including other living things, places and space. One Health approaches recognise the interconnected and ecological dimensions of human health and wellbeing, but rarely focus on the role of digital technologies. A set of key questions can take the idea of digital One Health forward: (i) How can we learn more about and establish deeper connections with other animals and the natural environment through digital media, devices and data?; (ii) How can we attune humans to these more-than-human worlds using digital technologies, cultivating attentiveness and responsiveness?; (iii) How can we better develop and implement digital technologies that support the health and wellbeing of the planet and all its living creatures (including humans) so that all can flourish?; and (iv) How can digital technologies affect ecological systems, for better or for worse? Developing digital One Health expands both the digital health field and the One Health perspective, leading them into crucial new directions for mutual flourishing.
