Bioactive polysaccharides from natural resources including Chinese medicinal herbs on tissue repair

A critical overview of challenging roles of medicinal plants in improvement of wound healing technology

PURPOSE

Chronic diseases often hinder the natural healing process, making wound infections a prevalent clinical concern. In severe cases, complications can arise, potentially leading to fatal outcomes. While allopathic treatments offer numerous options for wound repair and management, the enduring popularity of herbal medications may be attributed to their perceived minimal side effects. Hence, this review aims to investigate the potential of herbal remedies in efficiently treating wounds, presenting a promising alternative for consideration.

METHODS

A literature search was done including research, reviews, systematic literature review, meta-analysis, and clinical trials considered. Search engines such as Pubmed, Google Scholar, and Scopus were used while retrieving data. Keywords like Wound healing 'Wound healing and herbal combinations', 'Herbal wound dressing', Nanotechnology and Wound dressing were used.

RESULT

This review provides valuable insights into the role of natural products and technology-based formulations in the treatment of wound infections. It evaluates the use of herbal remedies as an effective approach. Various active principles from herbs, categorized as flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and phenolic compounds, have shown effectiveness in promoting wound closure. A multitude of herbal remedies have demonstrated significant efficacy in wound management, offering an additional avenue for care. The review encompasses a total of 72 studies, involving 127 distinct herbs (excluding any common herbs shared between studies), primarily belonging to the families Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Apiaceae. In research, rat models were predominantly utilized to assess wound healing activities. Furthermore, advancements in herbal-based formulations using nanotechnology-based wound dressing materials, such as nanofibers, nanoemulsions, nanofiber mats, polymeric fibers, and hydrogel-based microneedles, are underway. These innovations aim to enhance targeted drug delivery and expedite recovery. Several clinical-based experimental studies have already been documented, evaluating the efficacy of various natural products for wound care and management. This signifies a promising direction in the field of wound treatment.

CONCLUSION

In recent years, scientists have increasingly utilized evidence-based medicine and advanced scientific techniques to validate the efficacy of herbal medicines and delve into the underlying mechanisms of their actions. However, there remains a critical need for further research to thoroughly understand how isolated chemicals extracted from herbs contribute to the healing process of intricate wounds, which may have life-threatening consequences. This ongoing research endeavor holds great promise in not only advancing our understanding but also in the development of innovative formulations that expedite the recovery process.

Characterization of Chitosan Hydrogels Obtained through Phenol and Tripolyphosphate Anionic Crosslinking

Chitosan is a deacetylated polymer of chitin that is extracted mainly from the exoskeleton of crustaceans and is the second-most abundant polymer in nature. Chitosan hydrogels are preferred for a variety of applications in bio-related fields due to their functional properties, such as antimicrobial activity and wound healing effects; however, the existing hydrogelation methods require toxic reagents and exhibit slow gelation times, which limit their application in biological fields. Therefore, a mild and rapid gelation method is necessary. We previously demonstrated that the visible light-induced gelation of chitosan obtained through phenol crosslinking (ChPh) is a rapid gelation method. To further advance this method (<10 s), we propose a dual-crosslinked chitosan hydrogel obtained by crosslinking phenol groups and crosslinking sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) and the amino groups of chitosan. The chitosan hydrogel was prepared by immersing the ChPh hydrogel in a TPP solution after phenol crosslinking via exposure to visible light. The physicochemical properties of the dual-crosslinked hydrogels, including Young's moduli and water retentions, were subsequently investigated. Young's moduli of the dual-crosslinked hydrogels were 20 times higher than those of the hydrogels without TPP ion crosslinking. The stiffness could be manipulated by varying the immersion time, and the water retention properties of the ChPh hydrogel were improved by TPP crosslinking. Ion crosslinking could be reversed using an iron chloride solution. This method facilitates chitosan hydrogel use for various applications, particularly tissue engineering and drug delivery.

Critical review on the research of chemical structure, bioactivities, and mechanism of actions of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide

Dendrobium officinale (Tie-Pi-Shi-Hu) is a precious traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The principal active components are polysaccharides (DOP), which have a high potency in therapeutic applications. However, limitations in structure analysis and underlying mechanism investigation impede its further research. This review systemically and critically summarises current understanding in both areas, and points out the influence of starch impurities and the role of gut microbiota in DOP research. As challenges faced in studying natural polysaccharide investigations are common, this review contributes to a broader understanding of polysaccharides beyond DOP.

Evolution of Hybrid Hydrogels: Next-Generation Biomaterials for Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering

Hydrogels, being hydrophilic polymer networks capable of absorbing and retaining aqueous fluids, hold significant promise in biomedical applications owing to their high water content, permeability, and structural similarity to the extracellular matrix. Recent chemical advancements have bolstered their versatility, facilitating the integration of the molecules guiding cellular activities and enabling their controlled activation under time constraints. However, conventional synthetic hydrogels suffer from inherent weaknesses such as heterogeneity and network imperfections, which adversely affect their mechanical properties, diffusion rates, and biological activity. In response to these challenges, hybrid hydrogels have emerged, aiming to enhance their strength, drug release efficiency, and therapeutic effectiveness. These hybrid hydrogels, featuring improved formulations, are tailored for controlled drug release and tissue regeneration across both soft and hard tissues. The scientific community has increasingly recognized the versatile characteristics of hybrid hydrogels, particularly in the biomedical sector. This comprehensive review delves into recent advancements in hybrid hydrogel systems, covering the diverse types, modification strategies, and the integration of nano/microstructures. The discussion includes innovative fabrication techniques such as click reactions, 3D printing, and photopatterning alongside the elucidation of the release mechanisms of bioactive molecules. By addressing challenges, the review underscores diverse biomedical applications and envisages a promising future for hybrid hydrogels across various domains in the biomedical field.

A polysaccharide from salviae miltiorrhizae radix inhibits weight gain of mice with high-fat diet via modulating intestinal bacteria

BACKGROUND

Obesity, a global chronic disease, has been recognized as a severe risk to health. In our study, a novel polysaccharide named ARS was isolated and purified from aerial part of salviae miltiorrhizae radix. Our aim is to investigate the weight-reducing effect of a polysaccharide from salviae miltiorrhizae radix on mice fed a high-fat diet.

RESULTS

The novel polysaccharide ARS mainly consisted of glucose and galactose with a molar ratio of 0.59:1.00. We found that treatment with ARS could inhibit weight gain of mice fed a high-fat diet via modulating the intestinal bacteria. Moreover, we surveyed its mechanism in mice, and the gut microbiota sequencing results demonstrated that ARS can reverse or resist high-fat-diet-induced significant weight gain or obesity by increasing the diversity of gut microbiota and optimizing the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes. Phylum and species analysis of gut microbiota demonstrated that obesity caused by a high-fat diet was accompanied by significant changes in the microbial communities, but ARS could reverse the disturbance of gut microbiota induced by the high-fat diet to maintain homeostasis.

CONCLUSION

Overall, our findings suggested a new function of ARS in regulating gut microbiota, which provides a theoretical basis for the development of high-quality ARS functional foods and the application of dietary supplements. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Modulation of Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells in the Tumor Microenvironment by Natural Products

During carcinogenesis, the microenvironment plays a fundamental role in tumor progression and resistance. This tumor microenvironment (TME) is characterized by being highly immunosuppressive in most cases, which makes it an important target for the development of new therapies. One of the most important groups of cells that orchestrate immunosuppression in TME is myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which have multiple mechanisms to suppress the immune response mediated by T lymphocytes and thus protect the tumor. In this review, we will discuss the importance of modulating MDSCs as a therapeutic target and how the use of natural products, due to their multiple mechanisms of action, can be a key alternative for modulating these cells and thus improve response to therapy in cancer patients.

Biomaterials and tissue engineering approaches using glycosaminoglycans for tissue repair: Lessons learned from the native extracellular matrix

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are an important component of the extracellular matrix as they influence cell behavior and have been sought for tissue regeneration, biomaterials, and drug delivery applications. GAGs are known to interact with growth factors and other bioactive molecules and impact tissue mechanics. This review provides an overview of native GAGs, their structure, and properties, specifically their interaction with proteins, their effect on cell behavior, and their mechanical role in the ECM. GAGs' function in the extracellular environment is still being understood however, promising studies have led to the development of medical devices and therapies. Native GAGs, including hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and heparin, have been widely explored in tissue engineering and biomaterial approaches for tissue repair or replacement. This review focuses on orthopaedic and wound healing applications. The use of GAGs in these applications have had significant advances leading to clinical use. Promising studies using GAG mimetics and future directions are also discussed. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are an important component of the native extracellular matrix and have shown promise in medical devices and therapies. This review emphasizes the structure and properties of native GAGs, their role in the ECM providing biochemical and mechanical cues that influence cell behavior, and their use in tissue regeneration and biomaterial approaches for orthopaedic and wound healing applications.

Recent Advances in the Incorporation of Polysaccharides with Antioxidant and Antibacterial Functions to Preserve the Quality and Shelf Life of Meat Products

Meat and meat products are susceptible to various types of natural processes such as oxidative degradation due to their high content of protein and essential amino acids. However, finding solutions to maintain the nutritional and sensory quality of meat and meat products is unavoidable. Hence, there is a pressing need to investigate alternatives to synthetic preservatives, focusing on active biomolecules of natural provenance. Polysaccharides are natural polymers of various sources that exhibit antibacterial and antioxidant properties via a variety of mechanisms, owing to their diversity and structural variation. For this reason, these biomolecules are widely studied in order to improve texture, inhibit the growth of pathogens, and improve the oxidative stability and sensory characteristics of meat products. However, the literature has not addressed their biological activity in meat and meat products. This review summarizes the various sources of polysaccharides, their antioxidant and antibacterial activities (mainly against pathogenic food strains), and their use as natural preservatives to replace synthetic additives in meat and meat products. Special attention is given to the use of polysaccharides to improve the nutritional value of meat, resulting in more nutrient-rich meat products with higher polysaccharide content and less salt, nitrites/nitrates, and cholesterol.

Oral Wound Healing Potential of Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix Decoction—In Vitro Study

Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix (syn. rhizomes of Reynoutria japonica Houtt.) is a pharmacopoeial raw material in Europe and China. In traditional medicine, one of the applications for Reynoutria japonica rhizomes is wound healing. In a recent in vitro study, we demonstrated that ethanol and acetone extracts from this herbal drug have the potential to heal oral gum wounds. However, considering that a majority of herbal medicines have been traditionally administered as water decoctions, in the present study, a decoction of Reynoutria japonica rhizomes was prepared and detailed tests to determine its in vitro gingival wound healing activity were conducted. We used the primary human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) incubated with a decoction to determine cell viability (MTT assay), cell proliferation (the confocal laser scanning microscope—CLSM), and cell migration (wound healing assay). Moreover, the collagen type III expression was examined using immunocytochemical staining. The studied decoction was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized using the validated HPLC/DAD/ESI-HR-QTOF-MS method. The Folin–Ciocalteu assay was used to determine the total phenols and tannins content. Additionally, HPLC-RI analysis of decoction and the previously obtained ethanol and acetone extracts was used to determine the composition of saccharides. Low concentration (from 50 to 1000 µg/mL) of decoction after 24 h incubation caused a significant increase in HGF cell viability. No cytotoxic effect was observed at any tested concentration (up to 2000 µg/mL). The lowest active concentration of decoction (50 µg/mL) was selected for further experiments. It significantly stimulated human gingival fibroblasts to proliferate, migrate, and increase the synthesis of collagen III. Phytochemical analysis showed significantly fewer polyphenols in the decoction than in the ethanol and acetone extracts tested earlier. In contrast, high levels of polysaccharides were observed. In our opinion, they may have a significant effect on the oral wound healing parameters analyzed in vitro. The results obtained encourage the use of this raw material in its traditional, safe form—decoction.

Extraction, characterization, antioxidant and α-amylase inhibitory activities of (1 → 3)(1 → 6)-β-D-glucogalactan from Aspergillus niger ATCC 1004

The optimization of extraction, chemical characterization, and the evaluation of antioxidant activity and α-amylase inhibition capacities of the cell wall polysaccharides extracted from Aspergillus niger ATCC 1004 were studied in this paper. The response surface methodology through a factorial design of three levels indicated the optimal conditions for extraction: pH 13 and 180 min. Characterization results showed that the polysaccharide is glucogalactan, consisting of β-D-galactose-linked units (1 → 6) and β-D-linked glucose (1 → 3). The antioxidant activity was evaluated through three in vitro assays. It could effectively scavenge DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radicals with inhibition rates of 82.12%, 75.87% and 79.24, respectively, at 6.4 mg/mL, which were higher than those of the other polysaccharides. For inhibitory activity against α-amylase, a blocking effect of 53.7% was observed at a concentration of 2 mg/mL. Therefore, the cell wall polysaccharides of Aspergillus niger, (1 → 3)(1 → 6)-β-D-glucogalactan, seem to be a promising source for use as an antioxidant, in addition to holding an in vitro hypoglycemic potential.

Owing to distinctive architectures and abundance of functional groups, polysaccharide-derived hydrogels have exceptional physicochemical properties and unique therapeutic interventions. Hydrogels designed using polysaccharides can effectively safeguard wounds from bacterial attack. This review includes wound physiology and emphasises on numerous polysaccharide-based hydrogels for wound repair applications. Polysaccharide hydrogels for different wound types and diverse therapeutic agents loaded in hydrogels for wound repair with recent patents are portrayed in the current manuscript, debating the potential of fascinating hydrogels for effective wound healing. More research is required to engineer multifaceted advanced polysaccharide hydrogels with tuneable and adjustable properties to attain huge potential in wound healing.

Investigation and Characterization of Factors Affecting Rheological Properties of Poloxamer-Based Thermo-Sensitive Hydrogel

Poloxamers are negatively temperature-sensitive hydrogels and their hydrophilic groups interact with water molecules at lower temperatures (liquid phase) while their hydrophobic groups interact more strongly with increases in temperature causing gelation. To investigate the factors affecting the rheological properties of poloxamers, various parameters including different poloxamer P407 concentrations, poloxamers P407/P188 blending ratios and additives were examined. The results presented a clear trend of decreasing gelling temperature/time when P407 was at higher concentrations. Moreover, the addition of P188 enhanced the gelling temperature regardless of poloxamer concentration. Polysaccharides and their derivatives have been widely used as components of hydrogel and we found that alginic acid (AA) or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) reduced the gelling temperature of poloxamers. In addition, AA-containing poloxamer promoted cell proliferation and both AA -and CMC-containing poloxamer hydrogels reduced cell migration. This study investigated the intriguing characteristics of poloxamer-based hydrogel, providing useful information to compounding an ideal and desired thermo-sensitive hydrogel for further potential clinical applications such as development of sprayable anti-adhesive barrier, wound-healing dressings or injectable drug-delivery system for cartilage repair.

Triple-Networked Hybrid Hydrogels Reinforced with Montmorillonite Clay and Graphene Nanoplatelets for Soft and Hard Tissue Regeneration

Hydrogel is a three-dimensional (3D) soft and highly hydrophilic, polymeric network that can swell in water and imbibe a high amount of water or biological fluids. Hydrogels have been used widely in various biomedical applications. Hydrogel may provide a fluidic tissue-like 3D microenvironment by maintaining the original network for tissue engineering. However, their low mechanical performances limit their broad applicability in various functional tissues. This property causes substantial challenges in designing and preparing strong hydrogel networks. Therefore, we report the triple-networked hybrid hydrogel network with enhanced mechanical properties by incorporating dual-crosslinking and nanofillers (e.g., montmorillonite (MMT), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)). In this study, we prepared hybrid hydrogels composed of polyacrylamide, poly (vinyl alcohol), sodium alginate, MMT, and MMT/GNPs through dynamic crosslinking. The freeze-dried hybrid hydrogels showed good 3D porous architecture. The results exhibited a magnificent porous structure, interconnected pore-network surface morphology, enhanced mechanical properties, and cellular activity of hybrid hydrogels.

Polysaccharides: Sources, Characteristics, Properties, and Their Application in Biodegradable Films

Biodegradable films emerge as alternative biomaterials to conventional packaging from fossil sources, which, in addition to offering protection and increasing the shelf life of food products, are ecologically sustainable. The materials mostly used in their formulation are based on natural polysaccharides, plasticizing agents, and bioactive components (e.g., antimicrobial agents or antioxidants). The formulation of biodegradable films from polysaccharides and various plasticizers represents an alternative for primary packaging that can be assigned to specific food products, which opens the possibility of having multiple options of biodegradable films for the same product. This review describes the main characteristics of the most abundant polysaccharides in nature and highlights their role in the formulation of biodegradable films. The compilation and discussion emphasize studies that report on the mechanical and barrier properties of biodegradable films when made from pure polysaccharides and when mixed with other polysaccharides and plasticizing agents.

A Dual-Cross-Linked Hydrogel Patch for Promoting Diabetic Wound Healing

Diabetic wound treatment faces significant challenges in clinical settings. Alternative treatment approaches are needed. Continuous bleeding, disordered inflammatory regulation, obstruction of cell proliferation, and disturbance of tissue remodeling are the main characteristics of diabetic wound healing. Hydrogels made of either naturally derived or synthetic materials can potentially be designed with a variety of functions for managing the healing process of chronic wounds. Here, a hemostatic and anti-inflammatory hydrogel patch is designed for promoting diabetic wound healing. The hydrogel patch is derived from dual-cross-linked methacryloyl-substituted Bletilla Striata polysaccharide (B) and gelatin (G) via ultraviolet (UV) light. It is demonstrated that the B-G hydrogel can effectively regulate the M1/M2 phenotype of macrophages, significantly promote the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts in vitro, and accelerate angiogenesis. It can boost wound closure by normalizing epidermal tissue regeneration and depositing collagen appropriately in vivo without exogenous cytokine supplementation. Overall, the B-G bioactive hydrogel can promote diabetic wound healing in a simple, economical, effective, and safe manner.

Construction and Screening of Fractional Library of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma for the Rapid Identification of Active Compounds against Prostate Cancer

Efficient screening of anticancer agents is in urgent need to develop new drugs that combat malignant tumors and drug resistance. In this study, a combined strategy composed by solvent partition and HPLC fractionation was developed to generate an herbal fraction library of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma to quickly and efficiently screen anticancer agents. All library entries are directed into 96 well plates which are well mapped with HPLC chromatograms. The cell proliferation assay revealed seven active subfractions. Then, the major active ten peaks in these subfractions were prepared and isolated by semipreparative HPLC, and their inhibitory activities against prostate cancer cells were then tested at the same concentration level, leading to the identification of several active compounds. In addition, the structures of compounds arucadiol (2), 15,16-dihydrotanshinone I (4), methyl tanshinonate (5), cryptanshinone (7), 1,2-dihydrotanshinquinone I (9), and tanshinone IIA (10) were characterized by mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallographic analysis, and they were confirmed to be active in suppressing prostate cancer cell proliferation at 7.5 or 15 μg/mL, among which, the minor compounds 2, 4, and 5 showed higher activities than 9 and 10. This study provided a rapid strategy of identifying new anticancer agents in Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, which can be applied in other herbal medicines.

Polysaccharide hydrogels: Functionalization, construction and served as scaffold for tissue engineering

Polysaccharide hydrogels have been widely utilized in tissue engineering. They interact with the organismal environments, modulating the cargos release and realizing of long-term survival and activations of living cells. In this review, the potential strategies for modification of polysaccharides were introduced firstly. It is not only used to functionalize the polysaccharides for the consequent formation of hydrogels, but also used to introduce versatile side groups for the regulation of cell behavior. Then, techniques and underlying mechanisms in inducing the formation of hydrogels by polysaccharides or their derivatives are briefly summarized. Finally, the applications of polysaccharide hydrogels in vivo, mainly focus on the performance for alleviation of foreign-body response (FBR) and as cell scaffolds for tissue regeneration, are exemplified. In addition, the perspectives and challenges for further research are addressed. It aims to provide a comprehensive framework about the potentials and challenges that the polysaccharide hydrogels confronting in tissue engineering.

An effective and recyclable decolorization method for polysaccharides from Isaria cicadae Miquel by magnetic chitosan microspheres

The purpose of this research was to develop an efficient and non-destructive method for decolorizing of polysaccharides extracted from Isaria cicadae Miquel by magnetic chitosan microspheres (MCM). The optimum decolorization parameters were achieved by response surface methodology as follows: the MCM amount was 8.0%, the adsorption temperature was 48 °C, the adsorption time was 82 min and the pH was 7. Under these optimal conditions, the D _r%, R _r%, and K _c were 90.31 ± 0.12%, 95.40 ± 0.11% and 19.66 ± 0.49, respectively. MCM adsorption of pigment molecules was a spontaneous and endothermic process that could be fitted with the pseudo-second-order equation and the Freundlich equation. Besides, the adsorption mechanism could be controlled by multiple-diffusion steps, including film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. Furthermore, MCM is a recyclable material. Adsorption with MCM is a promising method to remove pigment molecules of polysaccharide, it may replace the traditional decolorization method.

Evaluation of immunomodulatory and antioxidants properties of Kwath, conventional extracts in plants Cocculus hirsutus and Cuscuta reflexa - in vitro &ex vivo studies

Introduction

The consumption of ‘Patalagarudi’ (Cocculus hirsutus ‘CHP’) and ‘Amarbel’ (Cuscuta reflexa ‘CRA’) as ethnic plants for health promotions rarely validated. The limited literature reported these plants as antioxidant and immunomodulators.

Objective

To evaluate the biodynamic properties of CHP and CRA extracts.

Methodology

The traditional formulation, ‘Kwath’ (K) and conventional extracts were prepared with CRA and CHP. The total phenolic content (TPC) was estimated. Various polyphenol compounds in the extracts were eluted on UHPLC. The biodynamic activities; i. Free radical scavenging (FRS-DPPH and ABTS), ii. Intracellular ROS scavenging activity in RAW 264.7 cell line iii. Spleenocytes proliferation assay for Th1/Th2 Immunomodulatory potential by flow-cytometer were assessed.

Results

The TPC in CRA (105–159 μg GAE/mg) and CHP (35–48 μg GAE/mg) recorded. The chromatographic peaks confirmed the presence of polyphenols in CRA and CHP extracts. UV spectra of the extracts to the extent possible have been correlated with certain polyphenols. The FRS (IC50) was significantly low in CRA-K (DPPH = 22.7; ABTS = 12.0 μg/ml) than CHP-K (DPPH = 70.4; ABTS = 50.2 μg/ml). Similarly, intracellular ROS scavenging activity with CRA-K (84%) showed the highest inhibitory potential compared to CHP-K (50%) and LPS control. The immunomodulatory activity of CRA-K significantly upregulated TH1 cytokines (TNFα and IFN-γ). The downregulation of Th2 cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10) was in all CRA and CHP extracts as compared to Con A.

Conclusion

The current study confirms the immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties of CRA and CHP along with the presence of polyphenols.

Bletilla striata polysaccharide cryogel scaffold for spatial control of foreign-body reaction

BACKGROUND

Implantation of a biomaterial may induce the foreign-body reaction to the host tissue that determines the outcome of the integration and the biological performance of the implants. The foreign-body reaction can be modulated by control of the material properties of the implants.

METHODS

First, we synthesized methacrylated Bletilla striata Polysaccharide (BSP-MA) and constructed a series of open porous cryogels utilizing this material via the freezing-thawing treatment of solvent-precursors systems. Second, Pore size and modulus were measured to characterize the properties of BSP cryogels. Live/dead staining of cells and CCK-8 were performed to test the cytocompatibility of the scaffolds. In addition, the Real-Time qPCR experiments were carried for the tests. Finally, the BSP scaffolds were implanted subcutaneously to verify the foreign-body reaction between host tissue and materials.

RESULTS

Our data demonstrated that cryogels with different pore sizes and modulus can be fabricated by just adjusting the concentration. Besides, the cryogels showed well cytocompatibility in the in vitro experiments and exhibited upregulated expression levels of pro-inflammation-related genes (Tnfa and Il1b) with the increase of pore size. In vivo experiments further proved that with the increase of pore size, more immune cells infiltrated into the inner zone of materials. The foreign-body reaction and the distribution of immune-regulatory cells could be modulated by tuning the material microstructure.

CONCLUSIONS

Collectively, our findings revealed Bletilla striata polysaccharide cryogel scaffold with different pore sizes can spatially control foreign-body reaction. The microstructure of cryogels could differentially guide the distribution of inflammatory cells, affect the formation of blood vessels and fibrous capsules, which eventually influence the material-tissue integration. This work demonstrates a practical strategy to regulate foreign body reaction and promote the performance of medical devices.

Beneficial Effects of Polysaccharides on the Epithelial Barrier Function in Intestinal Mucositis

Intestinal mucositis is a clinically relevant side effect of anticancer therapies. It is experienced by 60–100% of patients undergoing treatment with high doses of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and bone marrow transplantation. Intestinal mucositis can manifest as pain, weight loss, inflammation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and infection; affecting normal nutritional intake and intestinal function. It often impacts adherence to anticancer therapy as it frequently limits patient’s ability to tolerate treatment, causing schedule delays, interruptions, or premature discontinuation. In some cases, local and systemic secondary infections are observed, increasing the costs toward medical care and hospitalization. Several strategies for managing mucositis are available which do not always halt this condition. In this context, new therapeutic strategies are under investigation to prevent or treat intestinal mucositis. Polysaccharides from natural resources have recently become promising molecules against intestinal damage due to their ability to promote mucosal healing and their anti-inflammatory actions. These effects are associated with the protection of intestinal mucosa and regulation of microbiota and immune system. This review aims to discuss the recent advances of polysaccharides from natural resources as potential therapies for intestinal mucositis. The source, species, doses, treatment schedules, and mechanisms of action of polysaccharides will be discussed in detail.

Development and Characterization of Novel Biopolymer Derived from Abelmoschus esculentus L. Extract and Its Antidiabetic Potential

Abelmoschus esculentus (Okra) is an important vegetable crop, widely cultivated around the world due to its high nutritional significance along with several health benefits. Different parts of okra including its mucilage have been currently studied for its role in various therapeutic applications. Therefore, we aimed to develop and characterize the okra mucilage biopolymer (OMB) for its physicochemical properties as well as to evaluate its in vitro antidiabetic activity. The characterization of OMB using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed that okra mucilage containing polysaccharides lies in the bandwidth of 3279 and 1030 cm^-1, which constitutes the fingerprint region of the spectrum. In addition, physicochemical parameters such as percentage yield, percentage solubility, and swelling index were found to be 2.66%, 96.9%, and 5, respectively. A mineral analysis of newly developed biopolymers showed a substantial amount of calcium (412 mg/100 g), potassium (418 mg/100 g), phosphorus (60 mg/100 g), iron (47 mg/100 g), zinc (16 mg/100 g), and sodium (9 mg/100 g). The significant antidiabetic potential of OMB was demonstrated using α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibitory assay. Further investigations are required to explore the newly developed biopolymer for its toxicity, efficacy, and its possible utilization in food, nutraceutical, as well as pharmaceutical industries.

Anti-Osteoporotic Effects of Commiphora Myrrha and Its Poly-Saccharide via Osteoclastogenesis Inhibition

In traditional oriental medicines, Commiphora myrrha and its resinous exudate (i.e., myrrh) are used as herbal remedies to treat various inflammatory and metabolic disorders. Until now, C. myrrha-derived herbal products are considered useful source for bioactive compounds to manage numerous human diseases. This study investigated the effects of water extract of C. myrrha resin (WCM) and its polysaccharide (WCM-PE) on modulatory effects of osteoclast differentiation and/or ovariectomized-induced bone loss. Oral administration of WCM (200 and 500 mg/kg/day for four weeks) notably decreased trabecular bone loss and lipid accumulation in the bone marrow cavity. WCM and WCM-PE dose-dependently inhibited receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis and suppressed RANKL-mediated overexpression of c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells, cytoplasmic 1, thereby downregulating osteoclast-specific gene (Atp6v0d2, DC-STAMP and cathepsin K) expression. Thus, our results suggest that WCM and WCM-PE are promising nutraceutical candidates for the management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

The Influence of Polysaccharides-Based Material on Macrophage Phenotypes

Macrophage polarization is a key factor in determining the success of implanted tissue engineering scaffolds. Polysaccharides (derived from plants, animals, and microorganisms) are known to modulate macrophage phenotypes by recognizing cell membrane receptors. Numerous studies have developed polysaccharide-based materials into functional biomaterial substrates for tissue regeneration and pharmaceutical application due to their immunostimulatory activities and anti-inflammatory response. They are used as hydrogel substrates, surface coatings, and drug delivery carriers. In addition to their innate immunological functions, the newly endowed physical and chemical properties, including substrate modulus, pore size/porosity, surface binding chemistry, and the mole ratio of polysaccharides in hybrid materials may regulate macrophage phenotypes more precisely. Growing evidence indicates that the sulfation pattern of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans expressed on polarized macrophages leads to the changes in protein binding, which may alter macrophage phenotype and influence the immune response. A comprehensive understanding of how different types of polysaccharide-based materials alter macrophage phenotypic changes can be beneficial to predict transplantation/implantation outcomes. This review focuses on recent advances in promoting wound healing and balancing macrophage phenotypes using polysaccharide-based substrates/coatings and new directions to address the limitations in the current understanding of macrophage responses to polysaccharides.

Anticancer and Immunomodulatory Effects of Polysaccharides

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death and one of the most important public health problems in the world. And every year, millions of new cancers and hundreds of thousands of cancer-related deaths are reported worldwide. In recent decades, a number of biologically active polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein complexes have been isolated from plants, lichen, algae, yeast, fungi and mushroom, and due to their antitumor and immunomodulatory properties, these compounds have received considerable attention. Overall, the two key mechanisms by which polysaccharides act on tumor cells are direct action (inhibition of cancer cell growth and induction of programmed cell death/apoptosis) and indirect action (stimulation of immunity). Immunosuppressive effects are recognizable in both cancer patients and tumor bearing animals, suggesting that the immune system plays an important role in the immune surveillance of cancer cells. Thus, enhancement of the host immune response has been evaluated as a possible way of inhibiting tumor growth without damaging the host. In addition to their therapeutic and prophylactic properties, the polysaccharides are effective and less toxic than chemotherapy. The anticancer activity and immunomodulatory effects of most polysaccharides have shown the promising and real potential for the benefits of human health.

Panax quinquefolius (North American Ginseng) Polysaccharides as Immunomodulators: Current Research Status and Future Directions

Panax quinquefolius (North American ginseng, NAG) is a popular medicinal plant used widely in traditional medicine. NAG products are currently available in various forms such as roots, extracts, nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, energy drinks, etc. NAG polysaccharides are recognized as one of the major bioactive ingredients. However, most NAG reviews are focused on ginsenosides with little information on polysaccharides. NAG polysaccharides have demonstrated a therapeutic activity in numerous studies, in which many of the bioactivities involve regulation of the immune response. The purpose of this review is to summarize the structural features and the immunomodulatory properties of crude, partially purified, and pure polysaccharides isolated from NAG. Receptors of the innate immune system that potentially bind to NAG polysaccharides and the respective signal transduction pathways initiated by these compounds are discussed. Major challenges, recent innovations, and future directions in NAG polysaccharide research are also summarized.

Engineered biomaterial strategies for controlling growth factors in tissue engineering

Growth factors are multi-functional signaling molecules that coordinate multi-stage process of wound healing. During wound healing, growth factors are transmitted to wound environment in a positive and physiologically related way, therefore, there is a broad prospect for studying the mediated healing process through growth factors. However, growth factors (GFs) themselves have disadvantages of instability, short life, rapid inactivation of physiological conditions, low safety and easy degradation, which hinder the clinical use of GFs. Rapid development of delivery strategies for GFs has been trying to solve the instability and insecurity of GFs. Particularly, in recent years, GFs delivered by scaffolds based on biomaterials have become a hotspot in this filed. This review introduces various delivery strategies for growth factors based on new biodegradable materials, especially polysaccharides, which could provide guidance for the development of the delivery strategies for growth factors in clinic.

Poly-γ-glutamic acid derived nanopolyplexes for up-regulation of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase to augment tumor active targeting and enhance synergistic antitumor therapy by regulating intracellular redox homeostasis

The active targeting strategy has achieved inspiring progress for drug accumulation in tumor therapy; however, the insufficient expression level of many potential receptors poses challenges for drug delivery. Poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-pGluA), a naturally occurring anionic biopolymer, showed high affinity with tumor-associated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), which localized on the cell surface and exhibited intracellular redox homeostasis-dependent expression pattern; thus, GGT was utilized for mediating endocytosis of nanoparticles. Herein, GGT-targeting nanopolyplexes (γ-pGluA-CSO@Fe³⁺, PCFN) consisting of cationic chitosan and GGT-targeting γ-pGluA blended with iron ion were constructed to load reactive oxygen species-induced menadione (MA) and doxorubicin, which were utilized to investigate the mechanism of GGT up-regulation. Briefly, the pretreated PCFN/MA induced an intracellular oxidative stress environment, which facilitated adjusted up-regulated GGT expression and boosted tumor targeting. Subsequently, the destroyed redox homeostasis sensitized tumors for synergistic therapy. The innovative strategy of augmenting active targeting by disturbing intracellular redox homeostasis offers insight for the application of γ-pGluA-derived nanopolyplexes.

MicroRNA-204-5p mediates sevoflurane-induced cytotoxicity in HT22 cells by targeting brain-derived neurotrophic factor

BACKGROUND

Sevoflurane is widely used as an inhalational anesthetic in clinical practice. However, sevoflurane can cause cytotoxicity and induce learning capacity decline in patients. A previous publication indicated that miR-204-5p might have a close relationship with sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity. When exposed to sevoflurane, the expression of miR-204-5p in neonatal hippocampus of rats was significantly increased. Hence, we aimed to investigate the role of miR-204-5p in sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity using a mouse hippocampal neuronal cell line (HT22).

METHODS

The levels of miR-204-5p in HT22 cells were detected by RT-qPCR. In addition, the effects of miR-204-5p on cell viability, apoptosis and proliferation were evaluated by CCK-8, flow cytometric, and immunofluorescence assay, respectively. Western blotting was used to detect expressions of Bax, Bcl-2, active caspase 3, BDNF, TrkB, p-TrkB, Akt and p-Akt in HT22 cells. ELISA assay was used to examine the levels of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells. Meanwhile, the dual luciferase reporter system assay was employed to explore the interaction of miR-204-5p and BDNF in cells.

RESULTS

The level of miR-204-5p was increased in sevoflurane-treated HT22 cells. Moreover, downregulation of miR-204-5p inhibited sevoflurane-induced apoptosis and promoted cell proliferation by upregulating the proteins of Bcl-2 and downregulating the expressions of Bax and active caspase-3 in HT22 cells. In addition, inhibition of miR-204-5p alleviated sevoflurane-induced oxidative injuries in HT22 cells via decline of ROS and MDA and upregulation of SOD and GSH. Furthermore, bioinformatics and dual luciferase assay demonstrated that miR-204-5p can inhibit the TrkB/Akt pathway by targeting BDNF.

CONCLUSION

Our findings indicated that downregulation of miR-204-5p can decrease oxidative status in HT22 cells and alleviate sevoflurane-induced cytotoxicity through stimulating the BDNF/TrkB/Akt pathway. Therefore, miR-204-5p might be a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for the treatment of sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity.

Activation of notch 3/c-MYC/CHOP axis regulates apoptosis and promotes sensitivity of lung cancer cells to mTOR inhibitor everolimus

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway converges diverse environmental cues to support the lung cancer growth and survival. However, the mTOR-targeted mono-therapy does not achieve expected therapeutic effect. Here, we revealed that fangchinoline (FCL), an active alkaloid that purified from the traditional Chinese medicine Stephania tetrandra S. Moore, enhanced the anti-lung cancer effect of mTOR inhibitor everolimus (EVE). The combination of EVE and FCL was effective to activate Notch 3, and subsequently evoked its downstream target c-MYC. The blockage of Notch 3 signal by the molecular inhibitor of γ-secretase or siRNA of Notch 3 reduced the c-MYC expression and attenuated the combinational efficacy of EVE and FCL on cell apoptosis and proliferation. Moreover, the c-MYC could bind to the C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) promoter and facilitate CHOP transcription. The conditional genetic deletion of CHOP reduced the apoptosis on lung cancer cells to the same degree as blockage of Notch 3/c-MYC axis, providing further evidence for that the Notch 3/c-MYC axis regulates the transcription of CHOP and finally induces apoptosis upon co-treatment of FCL and EVE in lung cancer cells. Overall, our findings, to the best of our knowledge, firstly link CHOP to Notch 3/c-MYC axis-dependent apoptosis and provide the Notch 3/c-MYC/CHOP activation as a promising strategy for mTOR-targeted combination therapy in lung cancer treatment.

Characterization and anti-diabetic effects of the oligosaccharide fraction isolated from Rosa canina in STZ-Induced diabetic rats

Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. There has been a surge of research studies aiming to use natural products in the management of diabetes. The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize the structure and anti-diabetic mechanisms of the main ingredient from Rosa canina. The oligosaccharide was isolated from Rosa canina fruits and characterized by a combination of FTIR, NMR and Mass spectrometry. Wistar rats were divided into negative control, diabetic (type 2), isolated oligosaccharide (IO)-treated diabetic and positive diabetic controls. Oral glucose tolerance, gluconeogenesis and α-glucosidase inhibitory tests as well as immunohistochemistry and quantitative real time-PCR were performed to elucidate the molecular anti-diabetic mechanisms of IO. Structural analyses confirmed the oligosaccharide structure of isolated fraction. Gluconeogenesis and α-glucosidase activity were inhibited by IO in diabetic rats. The oral glucose tolerance test was improved significantly in the group treated with the IO (P < 0.05). Pancreatic β-cells and tissue pathological examination showed a significant improvement after the treatment period. In addition, the expression of Ngn3, Nkx6.1 and insulin increased in oligosaccharide-treated compared to untreated diabetic rats. Owing to the verified anti-diabetic effects and regenerative potential, isolated oligosaccharide could be considered as the promising drug in the management of diabetes.

Fish and fish side streams are valuable sources of high-value components

The current practice of fish processing generates increasing quantities of side streams and waste, such as skin, heads, frames, viscera, and fillet cut offs. These may account for up to 70% of the fish used in industrial processing. Low-value fish catches, and under-utilized fish species comprise another source of side streams. These side streams have been discarded in the environment leading to environmental problems or they have ended up as low commercial value products, such as feed for fur animals and aquaculture. However, several studies have shown that fish side streams contain valuable bioactive ingredients and fractions, such as fish oils, proteins and peptides, collagen, gelatin, enzymes, chitin, and minerals. These compounds and fractions may provide the opportunity to develop novel applications in health promoting foods, special feeds, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products. Better utilization of side streams and low-value fish would simultaneously improve both the environmental and ecological sustainability of production. This review summarizes the current knowledge on fish and fish side streams as sources of high-value components such as peptides with antimicrobial, antioxidative, antihypertensive, and antihyperglycemic properties, proteins such as fish collagen and gelatin, fish enzymes, fish oils and fatty acids, polysaccharides like glucosaminoglycans, chitin and chitosan, vitamin D, and minerals. Production technologies for recovering the high-value fractions and potential product applications are discussed. Furthermore, safety aspects related to the raw material, technologies, and fractions are considered.

Plant Phenolics and Lectins as Vaccine Adjuvants

Background:

The immune system is responsible for providing protection to the body against foreign substances. The immune system divides into two types of immune responses to study its mechanisms of protection: 1) Innate and 2) Adaptive. The innate immune response represents the first protective barrier of the organism that also works as a regulator of the adaptive immune response, if evaded the mechanisms of the innate immune response by the foreign substance the adaptive immune response takes action with the consequent antigen neutralization or elimination. The adaptive immune response objective is developing a specific humoral response that consists in the production of soluble proteins known as antibodies capable of specifically recognizing the foreign agent; such protective mechanism is induced artificially through an immunization or vaccination. Unfortunately, the immunogenicity of the antigens is an intrinsic characteristic of the same antigen dependent on several factors.

Conclusion:

Vaccine adjuvants are chemical substances of very varied structure that seek to improve the immunogenicity of antigens. The main four types of adjuvants under investigation are the following: 1) Oil emulsions with an antigen in solution, 2) Pattern recognition receptors activating molecules, 3) Inflammatory stimulatory molecules or activators of the inflammasome complex, and 4) Cytokines. However, this paper addresses the biological plausibility of two phytochemical compounds as vaccine adjuvants: 5) Lectins, and 6) Plant phenolics whose characteristics, mechanisms of action and disadvantages are addressed. Finally, the immunological usefulness of these molecules is discussed through immunological data to estimate effects of plant phenolics and lectins as vaccine adjuvants, and current studies that have implanted these molecules as vaccine adjuvants, demonstrating the results of this immunization.

Engineering a microcarrier based on a polysaccharide-growth factor complex for enhancing the proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) delivery has been broadly investigated as a cell-based therapy strategy towards various diseases and tissue injury. In these applications, the cell-delivery vehicle plays a crucial role in determining the therapeutic performance of MSCs and their fate post-implantation. We report here the development of a microcarrier system combining platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) and a PDGF-BB-binding polysaccharide - Eucommia ulmoides (EUP3) - for MSC cultivation. First, we investigated the optimal conditions to prepare the EUP3-PDGF-BB complex, by comparing its i) diameter, ii) morphology, and iii) bioactivity to promote MSC proliferation and fibroblast migration in vitro, under different PDGF-BB/EUP3 ratios. Then, we fabricated microspheres using gelatin and EUP3 as the matrix while stabilizing PDGF-BB at the optimal ratio for MSC adhesion and growth. Live staining and SEM observation indicated that the prepared microspheric carrier supported MSC growth and maintained cell stemness. We suggest that the EUP3/PDGF-gelatin microcarriers can potentially serve as a cell-delivery vehicle for tissue engineering.

Effect of Polysaccharides from Bletilla striata on the Healing of Dermal Wounds in Mice

Bletilla striata has been largely used in traditional folk medicine in China as a wound healing agent and to treat gastritis and several other health problems. Some studies have shown that plant polysaccharides may have the ability to promote wound healing. The aim of this work was to evaluate the wound healing activity of the polysaccharide extracted from Bletilla striata. Firstly, a Bletilla striata polysaccharide was extracted by water extraction and alcohol precipitation and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The Bletilla striata polysaccharide was then tested for cell migration and proliferation using the mouse fibroblast cell line. Then, the Bletilla striata hydrogel was fabricated for acute wound health care of the mouse full-thickness excision. The results showed that the BSP enhanced the proliferation and migration of L929 cells. The superior wound healing capacity of the BSP hydrogel was demonstrated that it significantly accelerated the wound healing process in vivo in full-thickness skin defect wounded models. Compared to the saline group, the BSP hydrogel could accelerate wound healing and promote re-epithelialization and collagen deposition by means of TGF-β/Smad signal pathway activation. Taken together, BSP hydrogel would be a useful pharmaceutic candidate for acute cutaneous wound health care.

Structural characterization and in vitro-in vivo evaluation of effect of a polysaccharide from Sanguisorba officinalis on acute kidney injury

We report here an acidic polysaccharide, namely RSP-3, which ameliorates acute kidney injury and is obtained from Sanguisorba officinalis. We extracted and purified two polysaccharides from this herb based on the acidity and screened them for their effect in regulating the immunological activity of macrophages. Among them, RSP-3 exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages by decreasing TNF-α and IL-6 levels. Subsequently, we found that RSP-3 suppressed ER stress, reduced ROS production and blocked NF-κBp65 translocation. After fully characterizing RSP-3 with a series of analytical technologies, we tested its anti-acute kidney injury (AKI) effect in vivo. In a murine AKI model induced by LPS, treatment with RSP-3 effectively ameliorated renal function. Besides, it decreased the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in serum and reduced macrophage infiltration in injured kidney tissue. In sum, RSP-3, with a significant protective effect against AKI by showing anti-inflammatory activity, may become a meaningful drug candidate for treatment of AKI.

The Preparation and Structure Analysis Methods of Natural Polysaccharides of Plants and Fungi: A Review of Recent Development

Polysaccharides are ubiquitous biomolecules found in nature that contain various biological and pharmacological activities that are employed in functional foods and therapeutic agents. Natural polysaccharides are obtained mainly by extraction and purification, which may serve as reliable procedures to enhance the quality and the yield of polysaccharide products. Moreover, structural analysis of polysaccharides proves to be promising and crucial for elucidating structure–activity relationships. Therefore, this report summarizes the recent developments and applications in extraction, separation, purification, and structural analysis of polysaccharides of plants and fungi.

A systematic review of mobile health interventions in China: Identifying gaps in care

INTRODUCTION

Mobile health has a promising future in the healthcare system in most developed countries. China's rapidly developing mobile technology infrastructure offers an unprecedented opportunity for wide adoption of mobile health interventions in the delivery of effective and timely healthcare services. However, there is little data on the current extent of the mobile health landscape in China. The aim of this study was to systematically review the existing mobile health initiatives in China, characterise the technology used, disease categories targeted, location of the end user (urban versus rural), and examine the potential effects of mobile health on health system strengthening in China. Furthermore, we identified gaps in development and evaluation of the effectiveness of mobile health interventions.

METHODS

A systematic review of the literature published from 18 December 2015 - 3 April 2019 was conducted and yielded 2863 articles from English and Chinese retrieval database and trial registries, including PubMed, EMBASE, China National Knowledge of Infrastructure and World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Studies were included if they used mobile health to support patient healthcare outcomes.

RESULTS

A total of 1129 full-text articles were assessed and 338 were included in this study. The review found that most studies targeted client education and behaviour change via applications (apps) (65.4%), including WeChat, and text messaging (short text messages) (19.8%) to improve patient medical treatment outcomes such as compliance and appointment reminders. The most common disease-specific mobile health interventions focused primarily on chronic disease management and behaviour change in cardiology (13.3%), endocrinology/diabetes (12.1%), behavioural health (11.8%), oncology (11.2%) and neurology (6.8%). The mobile health interventions related to nutrition (0.6%) and chronic respiratory diseases (1.6%) are underrepresented in mobile health in comparison to the burden of disease in China. The majority (90.0%) of the mobile health interventions were conducted exclusively in urban areas, with few opportunities reaching rural populations.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, mobile health has a promising future in China, with recent rapid growth in initiatives. The majority are focused on education and behaviour change in the realm of chronic diseases and target patients in urban areas. The imbalance in mobile health between the urban and rural areas, as well as between population disease spectrum and health service delivery, pose substantial dilemmas. However, mobile health may be redirected to correct this imbalance, possibly improving access to healthcare services, and filling the gaps in order to improve health equity for the underserved populations in China.

Novel drug delivery systems of Chinese medicine for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic intestinal inflammatory disease that comprises ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). IBD involves the ileum, rectum, and colon, and common clinical manifestations of IBD are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even bloody stools. Currently, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticoids, and immunosuppressive agents are used for the treatment of IBD, while their clinical application is severely limited due to unwanted side effects. Chinese medicine (CM) is appealing more and more attention and investigation for the treatment of IBD owing to the potent anti-inflammation pharmacological efficacy and high acceptance by patients. In recent years, novel drug delivery systems are introduced apace to encapsulate CM and many CM-derived active constituents in order to improve solubility, stability and targeting ability. In this review, advanced drug delivery systems developed in the past and present to deliver CM for the treatment of IBD are summarized and future directions are discussed.
