Abstract
Background Trauma systems provide comprehensive care across various settings, from prehospital services to rehabilitation, integrating clinical and social care aspects. Established in the 1970s, these systems are pivotal yet under-researched in their operational management. This study aims to fill this gap by focussing on the integration of operations management (OM) techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of trauma systems. By leveraging proven OM strategies from other healthcare sectors, we seek to improve patient outcomes and optimise system performance, addressing a crucial need for innovation in trauma care operations. Methodology A systematic literature review was conducted using the PICOTS framework to explore operational aspects of trauma systems across varied settings, from emergency departments to specialised centres. Searches were performed in 5 databases, focussing on articles published from 2006 to 2024. Keywords related to operational research and management targeted both trauma systems and emergency management services. Our method involved identifying, synthesising, and summarising studies to evaluate operational performance, with a specific emphasis on articles that applied operational research/management techniques in trauma care. All eligible articles were critically appraised using 2 quality assessment tools. Results Employing Donabedian's framework to analyse the quality of trauma systems through structure, process, and outcome dimensions, our systematic review included 160 studies. Of these, 5 studies discussed the application of the Donabedian evaluation framework to trauma systems, and 14 studies examined structural elements, focussing on the location of healthcare facilities, trauma resource management, and EMS logistics. The 63 studies on process indicators primarily assessed triage procedures, with some exploring the timeliness of trauma care. Meanwhile, the 78 outcome-oriented studies predominantly evaluated mortality rates, alongside a smaller number assessing functional outcomes. Conclusion Existing evaluation metrics primarily focussed on triage accuracy and mortality are inadequate. We propose expanding these metrics to include patient length of stay (LOS) and rehabilitation trajectory analyses. There is a critical gap in understanding patient flow management and long-term outcomes, necessitating focussed research on LOS modelling and improved rehabilitation data collection. Addressing these areas is essential for optimising trauma care and improving patient recovery outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to determine the effects of simulation-based training on triage decision-making skills and anxiety in fourth-year nursing students. Methods This study employed an experimental pretest-posttest design and randomly assigned 90 nursing students from adult and pediatric emergency internships to control (n = 48) and intervention groups (n = 42). Although both groups underwent triage decision-making training, only the intervention group received simulation-based triage training. Results A significant difference in posttest triage decision-making knowledge and anxiety scores was observed between the control and intervention groups (p < 0.05). The posttest triage decision-making knowledge score of the intervention group was significantly higher than the pretest score, whereas the posttest anxiety score was significantly lower. Conclusion Theoretical triage decision-making training was effective, whereas simulation-based triage training improved the nursing students' knowledge and performance. Therefore, simulation-based training should be integrated into traditional learning methods to improve the triage decision-making skills of nursing students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing students often receive insufficient training in older adults' care. PURPOSE Examine nursing students' perceptions of an e-learning module developed to enhance their knowledge about the comfort, safety, and mobility of older adults. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was administered to third-year baccalaureate nursing students at a Canadian university after they had completed the comfort, safety, and mobility module. The survey assessed students' perceptions of the e-learning module using four 5-pointLikert-type items. The survey also contained demographic questions and one open-ended question that invited participants to make any comments they wished. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participants'demographic characteristics. Responses to the open-ended quesiton were summative content analyzed. RESULTS The survey was completed by 119 participants, who reported that the module increased their confidence, perceptions and knowledge in working with older adults. Participants also found the method of instruction to be convenient, interactive, and enjoyable. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that the learning module has the potential to facilitate student nurses' learning about comfort, safety, and mobility.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effect of video-based simulation education on nursing students' motivation and academic achievement. The research was designed in a mixed model. A quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group was used for the quantitative part, and the descriptive phenomenology approach was used as the qualitative research method. The sample of the study consisted of second-year nursing students in two state universities in eastern Turkey. The data were collected with the Student Information Form, the Academic Achievement Test, and the Motivation Resources and Problems Scale using Google Forms Web application. Qualitative data were collected through online semistructured interview forms and focus group interviews. According to the results, the posttest academic achievement and Motivation Resources and Problems Scale mean scores of the students in the intervention group were significantly higher than those of the control group ( P < .05). In the analysis of the qualitative, three main themes emerged: We felt fortunate that it increased information retention," "We felt like we were in real practice environment," and "It made us feel that we were nurses." The results showed the use of video-based simulation can be suggested as a strategy to promote classroom teaching and engage students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Triage is the first step in providing prompt and appropriate emergency nursing and addressing diagnostic issues. Rapid clinical reasoning skills of emergency nurses are essential for prompt decision-making and emergency care. Nurses experience limitations in emergency nursing that begin with triage. This cross-sectional study explored the mediating effect of perceived triage competency and clinical reasoning skills on the association between Korean Triage and Acuity Scale (KTAS) proficiency and emergency nursing competency. METHODS A web-based survey was conducted with 157 emergency nurses working in 20 hospitals in South Korea between mid-May and mid-July 2022. Data were collected utilizing self-administered questionnaires to measure KTAS proficiency (48 tasks), perceived triage competency (30 items), clinical reasoning skills (26 items), and emergency nursing competency (78 items). Data were analyzed using the PROCESS macro (Model 6). RESULTS Perceived triage competency indirectly mediate the relationship between KTAS proficiency and emergency nursing competency. Perceived triage competency and clinical reasoning skills were significant predictors of emergency nursing competency with a multiple linear mediating effect. The model was found have a good fit (F = 8.990, P <.001) with, a statistical power of 15.0% (R² = 0.150). CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that improving emergency nursing competency requires enhancing triage proficiency as well as perceived triage competency, which should be followed by developing clinical reasoning skills, starting with triage of emergency nurses.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nurses are graduating ill-prepared to work with older adults across care contexts. The education nursing students receive about older adults often focuses on managing illnesses rather than promoting health. To expand the education that nursing students receive regarding health promotion and older adults, we examined nursing students' perceptions of an e-learning activity on health promotion with older adults. METHOD We used a cross-sectional survey design. We included first-year baccalaureate nursing students (N = 260) at a Canadian university. Students were required to complete the module, but only those who wanted to participate in the study completed the survey (n = 167; response rate = 64.2%). We used a feedback survey to assess students' perceptions of the e-learning activity using four 5-point, Likert-type items. We also asked one open-ended question to solicit participants' feedback and suggestions for improving the e-learning activity. Descriptive statistics (frequency, mean [SD]) were used to summarize participants' perceptions and demographic characteristics. Content analysis was used to explore responses to the open-ended question. RESULTS Participants reported that the module increased their knowledge about health promotion, as well as their perceptions and confidence in working with older adults. Participants also found the method of instruction interactive and enjoyable. CONCLUSION Our e-learning activity on health promotion was perceived by nursing students as helpful in sensitizing them to their role in promoting health among older adults. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine whether e-learning activities on cognitive impairment (CI), continence and mobility (CM) and understanding and communication (UC) improve student nurses' knowledge and attitudes in the care of older adults. METHODS A quasi-experimental single group pre-post-test design was used. We included 299 undergraduate nursing students for the CI module, 304 for the CM module, and 313 for the UC module. We administered knowledge quizzes, Likert scales, and a feedback survey to measure student nurses' knowledge, ageist beliefs, and feedback on the modules respectively. RESULTS Participants demonstrated significantly more knowledge and reduced ageist attitudes following the e-learning activities. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that e-learning activities on cognitive impairment, continence and mobility, and understanding and communication improve knowledge and reduce ageist attitudes among nursing students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test if two e-learning modules - one on cognitive impairment, and one on continence and mobility - in older people would improve the knowledge of nurse members from the Canadian Gerontological Nurses Association and College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta. METHODS A pre-post-test design was used to test 88 nurses' knowledge of cognitive impairment and 105 nurses' knowledge of continence and mobility and their perceptions of how the modules contributed to their learning. RESULTS There was a statistically significant increase in practicing nurses' knowledge about cognitive impairment (0.68 increase), continence (2.30 increase), and its relationship to mobility. Nurses' self-report on the feedback survey demonstrated increases in knowledge, confidence, and perceptions about older people. CONCLUSION These results suggest the modules have strong potential to enhance practicing nurses' knowledge about cognitive impairment, continence, and mobility.

Abstract
SUMMARY STATEMENT Pediatric disaster triage (PDT) is challenging for healthcare personnel. Mistriage can lead to poor resource utilization. In contrast to live simulation, screen-based simulation is more reproducible and less costly. We hypothesized that the screen-based simulation "60 Seconds to Survival" (60S) to learning PDT will be associated with improved triage accuracy for pediatric emergency nursing personnel.During this prospective observational study, 138 nurse participants at 2 tertiary care emergency departments were required to play 60S at least 5 times over 13 weeks. Efficacy was assessed by measuring the learners' triage accuracy, mistriage, and simulated patient outcomes using JumpStart.Triage accuracy improved from a median of 61.1 [interquartile range (IQR) = 48.5-72.0] to 91.7 (IQR = 60.4-95.8, P < 0.0001), whereas mistriage decreased from 38.9 (IQR = 28.0-51.5) to 8.3 (IQR = 4.2-39.6, P < 0.0001), demonstrating a significant improvement in accuracy and decrease in mistriage. Screen-based simulation 60S is an effective modality for learning PDT by pediatric emergency nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A sudden outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) started in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Up-to-date, there have been limited studies examining the anxiety status of Chinese individuals in the early phase of the pandemic period (January 30, 2020-February 15, 2020). This survey aimed to compare the level of anxiety of the medical staff with that of the public and to provide a theoretical basis for developing an effective psychological intervention. METHOD Questionnaires were sent on the Internet (http://www.wjx.cn) during this period. The anxiety levels of Chinese people were investigated using the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the demographic data were collected simultaneously. RESULTS A total of 1110 participants were enrolled in this study, with an effective response rate of 100%. A total of 482 respondents were medical staff (43.4%), while 628 were members of the general public (56.6%). The medical staff itself had a higher SAS score than the general public (48.36±13.40 vs. 45.74±11.79, P < 0.01), while the medical staff in Wuhan were more anxious than the public in Wuhan with a higher SAS score (54.17±14.08 vs. 48.53±11.92, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the anxiety levels of the medical staff and the public, with the medical personnel showing a higher anxiety level than the public, especially female medical staff in Wuhan. Therefore, urgent intervention programs to reduce anxiety should be implemented.

Abstract
Background: The use of simulation in medical education is evolving widely around the world. Hospital emergency services in the event of accidents and disasters affect the quality of health care. It is critical to determine the fundamental features for developing a hospital emergency department simulation to improve emergency services. In this regard, the current study conducted a comprehensive assessment of studies with the determinations and components of hospital emergency department simulation during accidents and disasters. Methods: In this systematic literature review, all studies between January 2010 and July 2021 were searched in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, ProQuest, Scopus, Web of Science, Iran medex Google Scholar, and Scientific Information Database (SID), MagIran databases and were analyzed with the thematic analysis approach and results were expressed based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. The quality of the included studies was assessed using related checklists. Results: The findings of this study were divided into 3 main categories and 10 subcategories, including factors related to manpower (manpower arrangement, performance-awareness-skills, safety, and communication), factors related to medical services (triage, time, and transfer of the injured), and factors related to resource management and support (physical environment, equipment, and the information system). Conclusion: Through systematic planning, simulation allows for the identification of emergency department difficulties during accidents and disasters. Identifying dimensions and components, such as resource management and support, manpower, and medical services, is effective in designing the simulation of the hospital emergency department during accidents and disasters. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct future studies with a qualitative approach and focus on the factors affecting the simulation of the hospital emergency department during disasters, which has been done by the same researchers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A critical component of disaster preparedness in hospitals is experiential education and training of health care professionals. A live drill is a well-established, effective training approach, but cost restraints and logistic constraints make clinical implementation challenging, and training opportunities with live drills may be severely limited. Virtual reality simulation (VRS) technology may offer a viable training alternative with its inherent features of reproducibility, just-in-time training, and repeatability. OBJECTIVE This integrated review examines the scientific evidence pertaining to the effectiveness of VRS and its practical usefulness in training health care professionals for in-hospital disaster preparedness. METHODS A well-known 4-stage methodology was used for the integrated review process. It consisted of problem identification, a literature search and inclusion criteria determination, 2-stage validation and analysis of searched studies, and presentation of findings. A search of diverse publication repositories was performed. They included Web of Science (WOS), PubMed (PMD), and Embase (EMB). RESULTS The integrated review process resulted in 12 studies being included. Principle findings identified 3 major capabilities of VRS: (1) to realistically simulate the clinical environment and medical practices related to different disaster scenarios, (2) to develop learning effects on increased confidence and enhanced knowledge acquisition, and (3) to enable cost-effective implementation of training programs. CONCLUSIONS The findings from the integrated review suggested that VRS could be a competitive, cost-effective adjunct to existing training approaches. Although the findings demonstrated the applicability of VRS to different training scenarios, these do not entirely cover all disaster scenarios that could happen in hospitals. This integrated review expects that the recent advances of VR technologies can be 1 of the catalysts to enable the wider adoption of VRS training on challenging clinical scenarios that require sophisticated modeling and environment depiction.

Effect of the Strategic Thinking, Problem Solving Skills, and Grit on the Disaster Triage Ability of Emergency Room Nurses. Abstract
In this descriptive study, we aimed to identify factors related to emergency room nurses’ disaster triage ability. A total of 166 nurses who worked for emergency departments of general hospitals completed a structured questionnaire consisting of the Disaster Triage Ability Scale (DTAS), the Strategic Thinking Scale (STS), the Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI), and the Original Grit Scale (Grit-O). The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 25.0 by means of descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, the Scheffé post hoc test, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Participants’ DTAS averaged 14.03 ± 4.28 (Range 0–20) and showed a statistically significant difference according to their experience of triage education (t = 2.26, p = 0.022) as a disaster triage-related attribute. There were significant correlations among DTAS and confidence in the PSI (r = 0.30, p < 0.001), the approach-avoidance style in the PSI (r = −0.28, p < 0.001), and futurism in the STS (r = 0.19, p = 0.019). The strongest predictor was confidence in the PSI; in addition, 14.1% of the DTAS was explained by confidence in the PSI, approach-avoidance in the PSI, and futurism in the STS. Emergency room nurses who received triage education showed a higher level of the DTAS and their DTAS could be explained by problem-solving skills and strategic thinking. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and implement triage education programs integrated with stress management to improve the approach-avoidance style to ensure better problem-solving skills and to utilize various training methods to enhance confidence to improve problem-solving skills and futurism as part of strategic thinking.

Abstract
Aim This research is designed to establish and evaluate the effectiveness of a virtual reality simulation program using COVID‐19 scenario for nursing students. Design This is a quasi‐experimental study using a non‐equivalent control group pre‐test‐posttest design. Methods The participants were 65 students in their fourth year in nursing college. The knowledge about communicable infectious diseases in the respiratory system, self‐efficacy, clinical reasoning capacity and learning satisfaction was evaluated. Results The experimental group showed a significantly higher learning satisfaction (t = 3.01, p = .004). Both groups presented statistically significant differences in knowledge on infectious respiratory diseases, self‐efficacy and clinical reasoning between pre‐test and posttest. However, knowledge (t = 0.47, p = .643), self‐efficacy (t = 0.70, p = .944) and clinical reasoning were not different between the groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urethral catheter placement is a common hospital procedure, and the urology service is often consulted for difficult catheterizations. Simulation-based education is used to improve procedural proficiency and could be used to increase confidence and comfort with difficult catheter placement. This study provides simulation-based education to help new nursing residents learn to perform independent Foley catheter placement and maintenance. METHOD All incoming nursing residents at our institution prospectively participated in this curriculum beginning in January 2020 (n = 291). Participants watched an instructional video and participated in a hands-on simulation. RESULTS Nursing trainees rated pre- to post-curriculum gains in content knowledge (p < .001) and confidence (p < .001). Participants reported that the curriculum increased their understanding of the procedure (p < .001) and that they would recommend it to peers (p < .001). CONCLUSION This educational initiative is a partnership between the Department of Urology and Department of Nursing to introduce and reinforce best practices for the care of patients who need Foley catheter placement and maintenance. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of fine nursing interventions on the clinical efficacy of acute alcoholism patients (AA). METHODS A total of 100 patients with AA were included in the study. Among them, 51 patients who underwent fine nursing intervention were assigned to the research group (RG), and the remaining 49 patients were treated with routine nursing intervention and were assigned to the control group (CG). The nursing efficacy, the recovery times (consciousness and limb movement), the incidences of adverse events, the nursing compliance, the psychological states (the Symptom Checklist 90 and SCL-90 scores), and the nursing satisfaction levels were observed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS Compared with the CG, the nursing efficacy, the compliance, and the nursing satisfaction levels in the RG were markedly higher, while the consciousness and limb movement recovery times were significantly shorter; moreover, the RG presented a significantly lower incidence of adverse events and SCL-90 scores than the CG. CONCLUSION While validly relieving the clinical symptoms and reducing the incidence of adverse events, fine nursing can effectively promote the recovery of patients with AA, and improve their treatment compliance and psychological states.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to test if the e-learning activity that we developed could improve student nurses' knowledge of continence and mobility and whether or not students would find the style of learning beneficial. METHODS A quasi-experimental pre-post-test design was used to test if the continence and mobility e-learning activity could improve student nurses' knowledge about assessing and managing the needs of continence and mobility. An 18-item true/false knowledge of continence quiz was completed by 116 student nurses and a Likert style feedback learning survey was completed by 135 nursing students. RESULTS There was a statistically significant increase in students' knowledge about continence and its relationship to mobility following the e-learning activity. The e-learning activity also enhanced students' knowledge, confidence and perceptions about older people. CONCLUSIONS The e-learning activity we developed has the potential to improve nursing students' knowledge about continence and mobility in an enjoyable manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Health professional education is transitioning to online platforms to meet students' need for flexibility and international access. However, there is a necessity for authentic presentation of educational material particularly in regard to clinical skills development. There has been major growth in the delivery of virtual simulated-based learning and assessment to provide clinical skill acquisition in an online platform. The aim of this review was to explore the use of virtual simulation to assess clinical competence in health education. DESIGN Integrative review. DATA SOURCES Peer reviewed studies published between 2008 to March 2020 were searched across PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL Medline, Scopus, and PsycINFO. REVIEW METHODS The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses was followed. Twenty-three studies, which met the inclusion criteria, were downloaded, and a quality appraisal and analysis was completed by the research team. RESULTS A thematic analysis identified four themes; pedagogy differences across disciplines, debriefing to enhance learning, preparing healthcare professionals in a safe and cost-effective environment, and managing challenges of virtual simulation. Debriefing with students within the online environment enabled students to share experience and reflect on choices for a deeper learning experience. CONCLUSIONS Virtual simulation can prepare students for the clinical environment by providing safe practice within complex clinical situations. Challenges related to managing and debriefing students must be overcome to ensure best student learning outcomes. Virtual simulation is a feasible strategy to assess students' clinical competency and support their learning in both medical and nursing programs, however simulation should be authentic and incorporate reflection.

Abstract
New innovative high‐fidelity simulation (HFS) technologies, including augmented reality and virtual reality, have begun being used for disaster response and preparedness. However, few studies have assessed the merit of these technologies in disaster simulation. This integrative literature review of 21 studies assesses the role of HFS technology in disaster. Most studies used a quantitative methodology (71.4%), followed by mixed (19%) or qualitative methods (9.6%). Nearly 60% covered only disaster preparedness phase, whereas 10% addressed disasters in middle‐income countries without including low‐income nations. The four most frequently mentioned technologies were immersive virtual reality simulation, computerized virtual reality simulation, full‐scale simulation, and augmented reality wearable smart glasses simulation. Nearly 50% of the studies used technology for purposes other than disaster simulation education, including telemedicine (14.3%), risk planning (14.3%), high‐risk map generation for preparedness purposes (9.5%), or rehabilitation medicine (4.8%). HFS technologies must be further evaluated outside of high‐income countries and in different disaster phases to better understand their full potential in disaster simulation. Future research should consider different health professions and more robust protocols to assist disaster response professionals and agencies in the adoption of HFS technologies.

Abstract
IntroductionDisaster triage training for emergency medical service (EMS) providers is unstandardised. We hypothesised that disaster triage training with the paediatric disaster triage (PDT) video game ‘60 s to Survival’ would be a cost-effective alternative to live simulation-based PDT training.MethodsWe synthesised data for a cost-effectiveness analysis from two previous studies. The video game data were from the intervention arm of a randomised controlled trial that compared triage accuracy in a live simulation scenario of exposed vs unexposed groups to the video game. The live simulation and feedback data were from a prospective cohort study evaluating live simulation and feedback for improving disaster triage skills. Postintervention scores of triage accuracy were measured for participants via live simulations and compared between both groups. Cost-effectiveness between the live simulation and video game groups was assessed using (1) A net benefit regression model at various willingness-to-pay (WTP) values. (2) A cost-effectiveness acceptability curve (CEAC).ResultsThe total cost for the live simulation and feedback training programme was $81 313.50 and the cost for the video game was $67 822. Incremental net benefit values at various WTP values revealed positive incremental net benefit values, indicating that the video game is more cost-effective compared with live simulation and feedback. Moreover, the CEAC revealed a high probability (>0.6) at various WTP values that the video game is more cost-effective.ConclusionsA video game-based simulation disaster triage training programme was more cost-effective than a live simulation and feedback-based programme. Video game-based training could be a simple, scalable and sustainable solution to training EMS providers.

Abstract
As health care is continuously changing, it is important that nurses are continually learning to promote evidence-informed practice. eLearning has gained prominence to gain information and enhance learning within time and space constraints. Innovation such as gamification within and outside of eLearning has also risen in interest to increase engagement in the learning process. In this article, we discuss the usefulness of innovation such as gamification via an ePlatform for continuing education of acute care nurses. Although innovative methods using an ePlatform have the potential to meet nurses' desires for continuing education that is flexible and applicable to their work, more research is needed to understand its effectiveness among acute care nurses. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined differences in learning outcomes among newborn intensive care unit (NICU) workers who underwent virtual reality simulation (VRS) emergency evacuation training versus those who received web-based clinical updates (CU). Learning outcomes included a) knowledge gained, b) confidence with evacuation, and c) performance in a live evacuation exercise. METHODS A longitudinal, mixed-method, quasi-experimental design was implemented utilizing a sample of NICU workers randomly assigned to VRS training or CUs. Four VRS scenarios were created that augmented neonate evacuation training materials. Learning was measured using cognitive assessments, self-efficacy questionnaire (baseline, 0, 4, 8, 12 months), and performance in a live drill (baseline, 12 months). Data were collected following training and analyzed using mixed model analysis. Focus groups captured VRS participant experiences. RESULTS The VRS and CU groups did not statistically differ based upon the scores on the Cognitive Assessment or perceived self-efficacy. The virtual reality group performance in the live exercise was statistically (P<.0001) and clinically (effect size of 1.71) better than that of the CU group. CONCLUSIONS Training using VRS is effective in promoting positive performance outcomes and should be included as a method for disaster training. VRS can allow an organization to train, test, and identify gaps in current emergency operation plans. In the unique case of disasters, which are low-volume and high-risk events, the participant can have access to an environment without endangering themselves or clients. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review the current literature of simulation in healthcare including the structured steps in the emergency healthcare sector by proposing a framework for simulation in the emergency department. METHODS For the purpose of collecting the data, PubMed and ACM databases were used between the years 2003 and 2013. The inclusion criteria were to select English-written articles available in full text with the closest objectives from among a total of 54 articles retrieved from the databases. Subsequently, 11 articles were selected for further analysis. RESULTS The studies focused on the reduction of waiting time and patient stay, optimization of resources allocation, creation of crisis and maximum demand scenarios, identification of overcrowding bottlenecks, investigation of the impact of other systems on the existing system, and improvement of the system operations and functions. Subsequently, 10 simulation steps were derived from the relevant studies after an expert's evaluation. CONCLUSION The 10-steps approach proposed on the basis of the selected studies provides simulation and planning specialists with a structured method for both analyzing problems and choosing best-case scenarios. Moreover, following this framework systematically enables the development of design processes as well as software implementation of simulation problems.
