Risk factors for hearing loss in children: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis protocol

Late-onset, progressive sensorineural hearing loss in the paediatric population: a systematic review

PURPOSE

To review possible risk factors for permanent delayed-onset, progressive sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in the paediatric population to recommend follow-up protocols for early detection.

METHODS

PRISMA-compliant systematic review was performed, including observational studies on the paediatric population up to 16 years old who have passed the newborn hearing screening programme (NHSP), investigating the development of late-onset, progressive SNHL. Electronic searches were performed through Medline, Embase, Cochrane, and Emcare.

RESULTS

37 studies were included. 21 showed an association between late-onset SNHL and congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection (age at hearing loss diagnosis 0.75 to 204 months, mean 45.6 ± 43.9), while 16 between late-onset SNHL and other congenital or perinatal factors, namely Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stay, prematurity, neonatal respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, hypocapnia, hypoxia, alkalosis, seizure activity, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), inner ear malformation, and gene mutations (age at hearing loss diagnosis 2.5 to 156 months, mean 38.7 ± 40.7).

CONCLUSIONS

cCMV infection may cause late-onset SNHL, which can be missed on standard NHSP. There is, therefore, evidence to support universal screening programmes to enable detection in even asymptomatic neonates. Ongoing audiological follow-up for all children with cCMV is advisable, to enable timely treatment. In the paediatric population presenting conditions such as NICU stay > 5 days, prematurity ≤ 34 weeks gestation, severe neonatal respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, ECMO support, and CDH surgery, an audiological follow-up from 3 months of age up to at least 3-4 years of age, and at least annually, should be recommended.

Hearing Loss and Risk Factors in Very Low Birth Weight Infants

The incidence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is still high in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. The purpose of our study was to provide the prevalence rates of SNHL and to analyze the risk factors of hearing impairment and changes in hearing thresholds in a cohort of VLBW infants. A retrospective observational study was conducted in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) from 2012 to 2016. All VLBW infants included were screened by transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) and diagnostic auditory brainstem response (ABR). In total, we enrolled 316 infants and SNHL was diagnosed in 68, leading to an early incidence of 21.5% as 36 infants out of 68 improved. Finally, SNHL was confirmed in 20 patients (6.3%) who needed hearing aids. They were significantly smaller, sicker, had longer hospitalizations, and received more ototoxic therapies. Logistic regression analysis showed that gestational age (GA) influenced the association between drugs and SNHL. The results underlined how the total exposure to antibiotics is significantly associated with SNHL, even after GA correction. In conclusion, GA, birth weight and, above all, the length and complexity of NICU stay quantify the risk of SNHL and should be considered at the individual level for parent counseling.

Effect of changes in the hearing aid subsidy on the prevalence of hearing loss in South Korea

Objectives

South Korea's National Health Insurance has provided hearing aids to registered individuals with hearing disabilities since 1989. In 2015, hearing aid subsidies increased to approximately US$1,000. This study aimed to understand hearing loss categories in Korea by analyzing patients between 2010 and 2020 and the effect of the 2015 hearing aid policy change on the prevalence of hearing loss.

Methods

The participants were patients registered on the National Health Insurance Service database from 2010 to 2020 with hearing loss. A total of 5,784,429 patients were included in this study. Hearing loss was classified into conductive, sensorineural, and other categories. Patients with hearing loss were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases diagnostic code. Disability diagnosis and hearing aid prescription were defined using the National Health Insurance Disability and Hearing Aid Code.

Results

The increase in hearing aid prescriptions and hearing disability registrations following the subsidy increase impacts hearing loss prevalence. Hearing aid prescription and hearing disability were found to have an effect on increasing hearing loss prevalence in univariate and multivariate analyses. The r-value of each analysis exceeded 0.95. Other hearing losses increased rapidly after the increased subsidy.

Conclusion

A hearing-impaired individual must be diagnosed with a hearing disability and prescribed a hearing aid to receive the subsidy. The prevalence of hearing loss was affected by increased hearing disabilities following changes in the hearing aid subsidy and the number of people prescribed hearing aids. Therefore, caution should be exercised when studying hearing loss prevalence over mid-long-term periods.

Prevalence and Profiles of Late-Onset Hearing Loss in Preschool Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Who Passed Newborn Hearing Screening in a South East Asian Population

Prevalence of hearing loss in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is uncertain, as it is more challenging to assess hearing function in children with developmental difficulties (DD). We aimed to determine the prevalence and profiles of hearing loss in preschool children with ASD in a Southeast-Asian population who passed newborn hearing screening. A retrospective study of preschool children with DD (ASD, Global Developmental Delay (GDD), and Speech and Language Delay (SLD)) attending the Child Development Unit (CDU) at our hospital was performed. Three hundred and thirty-three children (ASD: n = 129; GDD: n = 110; and SLD: n = 94) underwent hearing assessments. Of these, 10.8% of children (n = 36, comprising 15 with ASD, 12 with GDD and 9 with SLD) had confirmed hearing loss. Hearing loss was predominantly bilateral in children with ASD and GDD; in those with SLD, unilateral and bilateral hearing loss were equally common. Conductive hearing loss occurred as frequently as sensorineural hearing loss in children with ASD and SLD, but was the dominant subtype in those with GDD. Moderate to severe hearing loss (n = 2) was noted only in children with ASD. Children with ASD and GDD required significantly more audiology visits and procedures to obtain conclusive hearing test results, compared to those with SLD. The need to identify hearing loss and monitor for resolution is particularly important in vulnerable populations with communication deficits, such as in those with ASD.

Risk Factors Associated With Hearing Impairment in Infants and Children: A Systematic Review

The purpose of the present systematic review was to synthesize evidence on associated risk factors of hearing loss (HL) in children. Evidence-based research articles on HL published between January 2013 and December 2022 using PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were searched. The study included children between zero and three years of age who have permanent bilateral/unilateral HL (BHL/UHL) by employing case-control studies, randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized studies, prospective or retrospective cohort studies, and studies with or without comparison groups. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist for longitudinal and cross-sectional studies were used to rate the quality of the chosen studies. The studies that would be considered were reviewed by two independent authors, and a third author was contacted if there was a dispute. A preliminary literature search uncovered 505 articles from the electronic search and 41 studies by hand searching. Duplicate records were eliminated, leaving 432 records. The abstract and title were read, and 340 studies were eliminated. There were 92 articles in total that qualified for full-text screening. Among these, 75 articles were disregarded since they lacked information or failed to assess the risk factors for HL. The qualitative synthesis, therefore, included 17 articles. Most often, cross-sectional study designs were used in the studies that were reviewed, which were then followed by longitudinal studies. Three of the studies that were reviewed used a prospective cohort design. The quality of all the included studies was rated to be good. The current review revealed that the primary statistically significant risk factors for HL included ventilator support; craniofacial anomalies; low birth weight (LBW); forceps delivery; loop diuretics; meningitis; asphyxia; intensive care; consanguinity; sepsis; Apgar scores between 0 and 4 at one minute; toxoplasmosis, other agents, rubella, cytomegalovirus, and herpes (TORCH) infections; and hyperbilirubinemia.

Guidance for Increasing Primary Study Inclusion and the Usability of Data in Meta-Analysis: A Reporting Tutorial

Meta-analyses can be used to comprehensively summarize the state of a given literature base, understand development and relations between constructs, and synthesize intervention effects to identify "what works for whom," all of which can directly inform research, practice, and policy. In this tutorial, we first argue that data reporting in primary studies can meaningfully affect the results of meta-analyses and, most importantly, the subsequent interpretations and use of the findings in research, practice, and policy in speech, language, and hearing sciences. Though reporting guidelines have been well established for the results of meta-analyses, there is limited focus on the essentials for primary study reporting that allow for inclusion in meta-analyses. To this end, we provide guidance for primary study authors to ensure their studies can maximize their contributions to research syntheses and, specifically, to meta-analyses. We discuss current and ongoing issues related to reporting, provide data-based examples of instances where lack of reporting or transparency has rendered a study ineligible from inclusion in a meta-analysis, encourage editorial teams and peer reviewers to be flexible in the inclusion of supplemental data reporting based on journal requirements and limits, and suggest being explicit and earnest about why these requests are important to advancing the field. Predictors of Parental Recall of Newborn Hearing Screening Program in Saudi Arabia

Hearing impairment is a prevalent disabling condition among children; all newborns should undergo a universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). Unfortunately, many newborns who fail the screening test are lost to follow-up. Our study aims to evaluate parents' perceptions of UNHS and to identify predictors for newborn hearing screening recall in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study involving Saudi parents with 0-to-18-year-old children born in Saudi Arabia was conducted. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used to describe the participants' characteristics and to identify UNHS recall predictors. A total of 1533 parents were surveyed. Overall, 29.9% of them recalled a hearing screening at birth, while 22.2% reported no hearing screening, and 47.8% were unable to remember. Only (6.9%) participants reported a failed hearing screening, of which 75.9% recalled a follow-up recommendation. Females, parents aged 30-34 years, consanguineous parents, and parents of newborns who were treated with antibiotics were more likely to recall hearing screening compared to others. This study highlights inadequate awareness of UNHS among parents. Our findings support the need to improve the reporting system of UNHS results and implement educational programs to increase parents' recall of hearing test results and ensure early follow-ups for neonates with failed test results.

Para realizar el diagnóstico y la detección temprana de dicha patología en la población pediátrica se requiere de exámenes audiológicos especializados como las emisiones otoacústicas y los potenciales evocados auditivos. Por ello, es importante tener una guía para identificar y detectar aquellos pacientes con sospecha de hipoacusia neurosensorial congénita.  

Task force Guideline of Brazilian Society of Otology ‒ hearing loss in children - Part I ‒ Evaluation

OBJECTIVES

To provide an overview of the main evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis of hearing loss in children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years.

METHODS

Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on childhood hearing loss were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians' guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association's guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions.

RESULTS

The evaluation and diagnosis of hearing loss: universal newborn hearing screening, laboratory testing, congenital infections (especially cytomegalovirus), genetic testing and main syndromes, radiologic imaging studies, vestibular assessment of children with hearing loss, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and noise-induced hearing loss.

CONCLUSIONS

Every child with suspected hearing loss has the right to diagnosis and appropriate treatment if necessary. This task force considers 5 essential rights: (1) Otolaryngologist consultation; (2) Speech assessment and therapy; (3) Diagnostic tests; (4) Treatment; (5) Ophthalmologist consultation.

OBJECTIVES

RESULTS

The topics were divided into 2 parts: (1) treatment of sensorineural hearing loss: individual hearing aids, bilateral cochlear implants, cochlear implants in young children, unilateral hearing loss, and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder; and (2) treatment of conductive/mixed hearing loss: external/middle ear malformations, ventilation tube insertion, and tympanoplasty in children.

CONCLUSIONS

In children with hearing loss, in addition to speech therapy, Hearing AIDS (HAs) or implantable systems may be indicated. Even in children with profound hearing loss, both the use of HAs and behavioral assessments while using the device are important.

Association of Dry Eye Diseases and Auditory Sensitivity

This study aimed to evaluate the association between dry eye and inner ear diseases in a Korean population. Methods: Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES V, 2010−2012), a national cross-sectional health examination and survey, were collected by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The association between dry eye and inner ear disease was determined using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. The individuals were divided into two age groups (<60 and ≥60 years). Results: In total, 17,542 individuals (n = 11,932 in the <60 years group and n = 5610 in the ≥60 years group) were enrolled. After adjusting for confounding factors, the logistic regression model revealed that the associated factors were dizziness and loss of balance experience (OR, 1.315; 95% CI, 1.143−1.513), self-awareness of abnormal voice (OR, 1.372; 95% CI, 1.120−1.679), subjective hearing discomfort (OR, 1.278; CI, 1.084−1.506), and tinnitus (OR, 1.265; 95% CI, 1.101−1.453). The inversely associated factor for dry eye was bilateral hearing loss (OR, 0.497; 95% CI, 0.367−0.672). The hearing threshold was lower in the dry eye group than in the non-dry eye group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Tinnitus was associated with dry eye and bilateral hearing loss was inversely associated with dry eye. These results suggest that hypersensitivity of the senses and nerves, which is neuropathic hyperesthesia, is one of the main mechanisms of dry eye. Treatment of neuropathy may help in treating dry eye associated with dizziness or tinnitus.

Identification of autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing impairment genes through the study of consanguineous and non-consanguineous families: past, present, and future

Hearing impairment (HI) is one of the most common sensory disabilities with exceptionally high genetic heterogeneity. Of genetic HI cases, 30% are syndromic and 70% are nonsyndromic. For nonsyndromic (NS) HI, 77% of the cases are due to autosomal recessive (AR) inheritance. ARNSHI is usually congenital/prelingual, severe-to-profound, affects all frequencies and is not progressive. Thus far, 73 ARNSHI genes have been identified. Populations with high rates of consanguinity have been crucial in the identification of ARNSHI genes, and 92% (67/73) of these genes were identified in consanguineous families. Recent changes in genomic technologies and analyses have allowed a shift towards ARNSHI gene discovery in outbred populations. The latter is crucial towards understanding the genetic architecture of ARNSHI in diverse and understudied populations. We present an overview of the 73 ARNSHI genes, the methods used to identify them, including next-generation sequencing which revolutionized the field, and new technologies that show great promise in advancing ARNSHI discoveries.

Adults' with hearing loss perceived listening ability in daily communication: protocol for a systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis

INTRODUCTION

Understanding how adults with hearing loss perceive their abilities when listening in daily communication situations is vital to understanding the functional listening challenges associated with hearing loss. The aim of this study is to explore how adults with hearing loss describe their own experiences of the processes, behaviours and components of listening in real-world communication through secondary analysis of published qualitative data.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

A systematic review and thematic meta-synthesis of qualitative research studies and qualitative components of mixed-methods studies will be conducted. Studies published in English will be identified through searching Medline, PsychInfo, Web of Science, Embase and Google Scholar databases from inception to November 2021. Handsearching of the included studies' reference lists will be completed. Included articles will be assessed for methodological quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills checklist for qualitative studies. Thematic synthesis will proceed as follows: (1) line-by-line coding to label concepts present in the 'results' or 'findings' section(s) of the included studies; (2) grouping of similar codes into descriptive themes; (3) development of higher level analytic themes to develop a new interpretation of the included studies' findings. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of QUALitative (CerQUAL) research approach will be used to establish the degree of confidence that may be placed in synthesis findings and results will be reported alongside the synthesis. Two reviewers will independently undertake screening for eligibility, data extraction and quality appraisal, analysis and GRADE-CERQual assessments. Discrepancies will be resolved through discussion.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

As secondary data analysis of the published literature, ethical approval is not required. The results will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations and other research and clinical meetings. This protocol is registered with PROSPERO prospective database of systematic review.

Determination risk factors for severe and profound hearing loss in child candidates for cochlear implantation in southeast of Iran during 2014-2020

Background

Hearing loss can have a major impact on children’s language development, academic success and hearing comprehension. The aim of the present study was to determinate risk factors for severe and profound hearing loss in child candidates for cochlear implantation in southeast of Iran during 2014–2020.

Materials and methods

This case-control study consisted of 400 children referring to a cochlear implant center (in southeastern Iran) from Bandar Abbas, Zahedan and Kerman during the years 2014–2020 as cases. The subjects were selected using the random sampling method; 200 children hospitalized in Shafa and Afzalipour hospitals were selected as controls.

Results

Based on the results of the multivariate logistic regression, weight less than 1500 g (OR = 4.40: p < 0.05), hospitalization in NICU (OR = 7.21: p < 0.05), family history of hearing loss (OR = 11.47: p < 0.05), Gestational age over 35 (OR = 9.63: p < 0.05), intracranial hemorrhage (OR = 5.18: p < 0.05), consanguineous marriage (OR = 12.48: p < 0.05) and high fever and seizures (OR = 3.02: p < 0.05) were recognized as risk factors for sensorineural deafness in children.

Conclusion

Most of the risk factors for deafness are preventable, and hereditary factors play an important role in congenital deafness in children. Therefore, genetic counseling before consanguineous marriage, early diagnosis, timely intervention can prevent many cases of hearing loss in children.

Cytomegalovirus-A Risk Factor for Childhood Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review

OBJECTIVE

Permanent hearing loss is an important public health issue in children with consequences for language, social, and academic functioning. Early hearing detection, intervention, and monitoring are important in mitigating the impact of permanent childhood hearing loss. Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a leading cause of hearing loss. The purpose of this review was to synthesize the evidence on the association between CMV infection and permanent childhood hearing loss.

DESIGN

We performed a systematic review and examined scientific literature from the following databases: MEDLINE, Ovid MEDLINE(R) Daily and Ovid MEDLINE(R), Embase, and CINAHL. The primary outcome was permanent bilateral or unilateral hearing loss with congenital onset or onset during childhood (birth to 18 years). The secondary outcome was progressive hearing loss. We included studies reporting data on CMV infection. Randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, nonrandomized comparative and noncomparative studies, and case series were considered. Data were extracted and the quality of individual studies was assessed with the Qualitative Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies (McMaster University). The quality and strength of the evidence were graded using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). A narrative synthesis was completed.

RESULTS

Sixty-five articles were included in the review. Prevalence of hearing loss at birth was over 33% among symptomatic CMV-infected newborns and less than 15% in asymptomatic infections. This difference in prevalence was maintained during childhood with more than 40% prevalence reported for symptomatic and less than 30% for asymptomatic CMV. Late-onset and progressive hearing loss appear to be characteristic of congenital CMV infections. Definitions of hearing loss, degree of loss, and reporting of laterality varied across studies. All degrees and both bilateral and unilateral loss were reported, regardless of symptomatic and asymptomatic status at birth, and no conclusions about the characteristics of hearing loss could be drawn. Various patterns of hearing loss were reported including stable, progressive, and fluctuating, and improvement in hearing (sometimes to normal hearing) was documented. These changes were reported in children with symptomatic/asymptomatic congenital CMV infection, presenting with congenital/early onset/late-onset hearing loss and in children treated and untreated with antiviral medication.

CONCLUSIONS

Symptomatic and asymptomatic congenital CMV infection should be considered a risk factor for hearing loss at birth and during childhood and for progressive hearing loss. Therefore, CMV should be included as a risk factor in screening and surveillance programs and be taken into account in clinical follow-up of children with hearing loss.

The genetic architecture of age-related hearing impairment revealed by genome-wide association analysis

Age-related hearing impairment (ARHI) is the most common sensory disorder in older adults. We conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 121,934 ARHI cases and 591,699 controls from Iceland and the UK. We identified 21 novel sequence variants, of which 13 are rare, under either additive or recessive models. Of special interest are a missense variant in LOXHD1 (MAF = 1.96%) and a tandem duplication in FBF1 covering 4 exons (MAF = 0.22%) associating with ARHI (OR = 3.7 for homozygotes, P = 1.7 × 10-22 and OR = 4.2 for heterozygotes, P = 5.7 × 10-27, respectively). We constructed an ARHI genetic risk score (GRS) using common variants and showed that a common variant GRS can identify individuals at risk comparable to carriers of rare high penetrance variants. Furthermore, we found that ARHI and tinnitus share genetic causes. This study sheds a new light on the genetic architecture of ARHI, through several rare variants in both Mendelian deafness genes and genes not previously linked to hearing.

Monitoring of the auditory pathway maturation after early intervention during the first year of life in infants with sensorineural hearing loss

Purpose

The objective of this study was to investigate the auditory pathway maturation monitored by auditory brainstem responses (ABR) in infants with hearing loss during the first year of life. ABR were used to estimate hearing thresholds and the effect of early intervention strategies using hearing aids (HA).

Methods

Click-evoked ABRs were measured in 102 infants aged from 0 to 12 months to determine their individual auditory threshold. Early therapy intervention was recommended before 12 months of age and analyzed. To evaluate the effect of hearing amplification on auditory maturation, different subgroups of infants with moderate hearing loss were analyzed and the auditory pathway maturation was determined based on IPL I–V shortening.

Results

Overall, 110 ears (54.0% of 204 ears) with mild to profound HL showed threshold changes of 10 dB up to 60 dB in the follow-up ABR testing. HA were prescribed at the age of 3.8 ± 3.9 months. Cochlear implantation (CI) was performed in cases of repeated profound HL at the age of 9.9 months ± 4.5 months. A significant shortening of IPL I–V in all subgroups of infants (with and without risk factors) who received HA was shown and assumed auditory pathway maturation.

Conclusion

An early intervention using optimally fitted HA influenced auditory pathway maturation and may lead to improvements of hearing thresholds during the first year of life in infants. This study underscores the importance of not only providing HAs to infants, but also controlling for hearing threshold changes ensuring that HAs provide the optimal level of intervention or CI is indicated.

Pathological and clinical profile of hearing loss among Sudanese children attending the Khartoum Teaching Hospital

Background

Hearing loss is a common disability affecting nearly 360 million people in the world and 75% of cases live in developing countries. Many children are vulnerable to diseases causing hearing loss that often go untreated. The aim of this study is to identify the possible etiological factors and clinical presentations of children who presented with hearing loss at the Khartoum Teaching Hospital.

Materials and Methods

a descriptive, cross-sectional hospital-based study. A total of 100 (response rate of 94%) children aged 5-15 who presented with hearing loss at Khartoum Teaching Hospital were included in this study. A detailed structured, pretested, and pre-coded questionnaire was used. After data collection, hearing examination was performed by an E.N.T specialist, then audiometry performed to diagnose hearing loss and for classification of the hearing loss type. Discriptive Statisistics frequencies and cross-tabulation were done. A Chi-square test was used for proportions. A P value of less than 0.05 considered significant.

Results

Out of 100 patients, 68 patients (68%) belonged to the 5-10 years age group. The mean age was 8.5 years. The male to female ratio was 1.00-1.13. Conductive hearing loss was found in 66% of the studied group, sensory-neural hearing loss in 23% and the mixed type in 11%. Regarding the etiology, otitis media was found in 41 of patients (41%), congenital hearing loss in 22% (22 patients), traumatic hearing loss in 4%, sickle cell anemia in 2%, mumps in 14%, diabetes mellitus in 3%, and measles in 8% of the patients. In conclusion, a number of preventable causes were shown to contribute significantly to the etiology of hearing loss.

Conclusion

The commonest factors associated with hearing loss among participants were otitis media and hereditary causes, respectively. Further community-based studies of hearing-impaired children are necessary for planning effective preventive and curative programs.

Mothers' perceptions of universal newborn hearing screening in transitional Albania

The universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) component of the multi-center EUSCREEN project is being piloted in Albania since January 1^st 2018. The aim of this study was to explore mothers’ perceptions about various elements of UNHS in Albania. A cross-sectional study was carried out in the three sites of UNHS in Albania, namely in Tirana, Kukës and Pogradec during May-June 2019. During this period 512 consecutively approached mothers giving birth to included maternity hospitals were interviewed face-to-face about different aspects of UNHS. Basic socio-demographic and socioeconomic information was also collected. Mean age of participating mothers was 28.6 years ± 5.5 years. The overwhelming majority (93%) of mothers knew what their baby was being tested for, 33% were aware that hearing screening was offered in maternity hospital, 94% were very satisfied/satisfied with UNHS and about 62% were very stressed/stressed waiting for screening results, with significant sociodemographic and socioeconomic differences. The main information source about UNHS was screening staff in the maternity hospitals where mothers gave birth, reported in 67% of cases. All mothers (100%) agreed on the importance of early detection of newborn hearing problems, all mothers were willing to be informed early if their newborn baby had a hearing problem and all mothers were willing to contribute financially for testing the hearing of their newborn baby. These findings should guide information and education campaigns about UNHS in Albania. The public willingness to financially support neonatal hearing testing should be considered as an opportunity to achieve universal newborn hearing screening in the country.
