Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by intestinal barrier dysfunction, inflammatory synergistic effects and excessive tissue injury. Gallic acid (GA) is renowned for its remarkable biological activity, encompassing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the underlying mechanisms by which GA protects against intestinal inflammation have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of GA on the inflammation of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human colon carcinoma cell line (Caco-2) and on the intestinal barrier dysfunction, and explore the underlying molecular mechanism involved. Our findings demonstrate that 5 μg/mL GA restores the downregulation of the mRNA and protein levels of Claudin-1, Occludin, and ZO-1 and decreases the expressions of inflammatory factors such as IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α induced by LPS. In addition, GA exhibits a protective effect by reducing the LPS-enhanced early and late apoptotic ratios, downregulating the mRNA levels of pro-apoptotic factors ( Bax, Bad, Caspase-3, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9), and upregulating the mRNA levels of anti-apoptotic factor Bcl-2 in Caco-2 cells. GA also reduces the levels of reactive oxygen species increased by LPS and restores the activity of antioxidant enzymes, namely, superoxide dismutase and catalase, as well as the level of glutathione. More importantly, GA exerts its anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the LPS-induced phosphorylation of key signaling molecules in the NF-κB/MAPK pathway, including p65, IκB-α, p38, JNK, and ERK, in Caco-2 cells. Overall, our findings show that GA increases the expressions of tight junction proteins, reduces cell apoptosis, relieves oxidative stress and suppresses the activation of the NF-κB/MAPK pathway to reduce LPS-induced intestinal inflammation in Caco-2 cells, indicating that GA has potential as a therapeutic agent for intestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Apple pomace (AP) is a highly prevalent waste product worldwide in the fruit processing sector. This study compared the chemical profile, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities of crude (CE) and an extract purified using XAD-7 resin (PE). The purification process increased the total phenolic content, flavonoids, and tannins by 3.35, 40.31, and 8.87-fold, respectively. The main phenolic compounds identified in PE were phlorizin (20.54 mg/g), chlorogenic acid (10.01 mg/g), and hyperoside (2.77 mg/g). No difference was found between CE and PE in protecting human plasma against oxidation. In human erythrocytes, both CE and PE decreased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and decreased lipoperoxidation. However, PE had stronger anti-inflammatory effects than CE by promoting HO-1 gene expression, suppressing NO production, and inhibiting IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 mRNA expression in lipopolysaccharide-challenged RAW.264.7 macrophages. Therefore, purifying apple pomace crude extract is a promising approach to boosting valuable antioxidants and anti-inflammatory phenolics.

Abstract
The aim of the research was to develop novel gallic acid (GA)-modified amphiphilic nanoparticles of polyethylenimine (PEI)-polypropylene carbonate (PPC)-PEI (PEPE) and comprehensively assess its properties as an antiperiodontitis nanoparticle targeting the Toll-like receptor (TLR). The first step is to evaluate the binding potential of GA to the core trigger receptors TLR2 and TLR4/MD2 for periodontitis using molecular docking techniques. Following this, we conducted NMR, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering analyses on the synthesized PEPE nanoparticles. As the final step, we investigated the synthetic results and in vitro antiperiodontitis properties of GA-PEPE nanoparticles. The investigation revealed that GA exhibits potential for targeted binding to TLR2 and the TLR4/MD2 complex. Furthermore, we successfully developed 91.19 nm positively charged PEPE nanoparticles. Spectroscopic analysis indicated the successful synthesis of GA-modified PEPE. Additionally, CCK8 results demonstrated that GA modification significantly reduced the biotoxicity of PEPE. The in vitro antiperiodontitis properties assessment illustrated that 6.25 μM of GA-PEPE nanoparticles significantly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. The GA-PEPE nanoparticles, with their targeted TLR binding capabilities, were found to possess excellent biocompatibility and antiperiodontitis properties. GA-PEPE nanoparticles will provide highly innovative input into the development of anti- periodontitis nanoparticles.

Abstract
The study, synthesis, and application of nanomaterials in medicine have grown exponentially in recent years. An example of this is the understanding of how nanomaterials activate or regulate the immune system, particularly macrophages. In this work, nanoparticles were synthesized using Rumex hymenosepalus as a reducing agent (AgRhNPs). According to thermogravimetric analysis, the metal content of nanoparticles is 55.5% by weight. The size of the particles ranges from 5-26 nm, with an average of 11 nm, and they possess an fcc crystalline structure. The presence of extract molecules on the nanomaterial was confirmed by UV-Vis and FTIR. It was found by UPLC-qTOF that the most abundant compounds in Rh extract are flavonols, flavones, isoflavones, chalcones, and anthocyanidins. The viability and apoptosis of the THP-1 cell line were evaluated for AgRhNPs, commercial nanoparticles (AgCNPs), and Rh extract. The results indicate a minimal cytotoxic and apoptotic effect at a concentration of 12.5 μg/mL for both nanoparticles and 25 μg/mL for Rh extract. The interaction of the THP-1 cell line and treatments was used to evaluate the polarization of monocyte subsets in conjunction with an evaluation of CCR2, Tie-2, and Arg-1 expression. The AgRhNPs nanoparticles and Rh extract neither exhibited cytotoxicity in the THP-1 monocyte cell line. Additionally, the treatments mentioned above exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by maintaining the classical monocyte phenotype CD14++CD16, reducing pro-inflammatory interleukin IL-6 production, and increasing IL-4 production.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a significant demand for natural products as a mean of disease prevention or as an alternative to conventional medications. The driving force for this change is the growing recognition of the abundant presence of valuable bioactive compounds in natural products. On recent years Actinia arguta fruit, also known as kiwiberry, has attracted a lot of attention from scientific community due to its richness in bioactive compounds, including phenolic compounds, organic acids, vitamins, carotenoids and fiber. These bioactive compounds contribute to the fruit's diverse outstanding biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and anti-cancer properties. Due to these properties, the fruit may have the potential to be used in the treatment/prevention of various types of cancer, including glioblastoma. Glioblastoma is the most aggressive form of brain cancer, displaying 90 % of recurrence rate within a span of 2 years. Despite the employment of an aggressive approach, the prognosis remains unfavorable, emphasizing the urgent requirement for the development of new effective treatments. The preclinical evidence suggests that kiwiberry has potential impact on glioblastoma by reducing the cancer self-renewal, modulating the signaling pathways involved in the regulation of the cell phenotype and metabolism, and influencing the consolidation of the tumor microenvironment. Even though, challenges such as the imprecise composition and concentration of bioactive compounds, and its low bioavailability after oral administration may be drawbacks to the development of kiwiberry-based treatments, being urgent to ensure the safety and efficacy of kiwiberry for the prevention and treatment of glioblastoma. This review aims to highlight the potential impact of A. arguta bioactive compounds on glioblastoma, providing novel insights into their applicability as complementary or alternative therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a highly traumatic injury that causes mechanical damage to the spinal cord. Our study aimed to investigate whether gallic acid has protective effects against SCI injury. METHODS Adult male rats were subjected to contusive spinal cord injuries. For behavioural evaluation, the rats were given gallic acid by i.p. injection at the doses of 10, 50 or 100 mg/kg immediately after SCI once daily for consecutive 28 days. Behavioral tests were used to evaluate locomotor functions, mechanical sensitivity and nerve conduction functions. For biochemical experiments, the rats were randomly divided into three groups: sham group, SCI group and SCI+gallic acid group. The rats in the SCI+gallic acid group were given gallic acid at the dose of 100 mg/kg immediately after SCI once daily for consecutive 14 days. The levels of inflammatory factors were evaluated. RESULTS Gallic acid treatment could improve locomotive and sensory function and reduce the functional impairments in SCI rats. The effects were more effective with increasing gallic acid dose. The levels of M1 markers (inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2) were decreased in gallic acid-treated SCI rats, whereas the levels of M2 markers (arginase 1 and cluster of differentiation 206) were increased in response to gallic acid administration. Gallic acid treatment resulted in a significant reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines and an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokine levels. CONCLUSION Gallic acid enhances the recovery in SCI rats by regulating microglial polarization. The underlying mechanism may involve the promotion of M2 polarization and the suppression of M1 polarization in microglia.

Abstract
Tilapia skin is a great source of collagen. Here, we aimed to isolate and identify the peptides responsible for combating dry eye disease (DED) in tilapia skin peptides (TSP). In vitro cell DED model was used to screen anti-DED peptides from TSP via Sephadex G-25 chromatography, LC/MS/MS, and in silico methods. The anti-DED activity of the screened peptide was further verified in the mice DED model. TSP was divided into five fractions (TSP-I, TSP-II, TSP-III, TSP-IV, and TSP-V), and TSP-II exerted an effective effect for anti-DED. A total of 131 peptides were identified using LC/MS/MS in TSP-II, and NGGPSGPR (NGG) was screened as a potential anti-DED fragment in TSP-II via in silico methods. In vitro, NGG restored cell viability and inhibited the expression level of Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein in Human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) induced by NaCl. In vivo, NGG increased tear production, decreased tear ferning score, prevented corneal epithelial thinning, alleviated conjunctival goblet cell loss, and inhibited the apoptosis of corneal epithelial cells in DED mice. Overall, NGG, as an anti-DED peptide, was successfully identified from TSP, and it may be devoted to functional food ingredients or medicine for DED.
