Abstract
Since dietary intake is challenging to directly measure in large-scale cohort studies, we often rely on self-reported instruments (e.g., food frequency questionnaires, 24-hour recalls, and diet records) developed in nutritional epidemiology. Those self-reported instruments are prone to measurement errors, which can lead to inaccuracies in the calculation of nutrient profiles. Currently, few computational methods exist to address this problem. In the present study, we introduce a deep-learning approach --- M icrobiom e -based nu t rient p r of i le c orrector (METRIC), which leverages gut microbial compositions to correct random errors in self-reported dietary assessments using 24-hour recalls or diet records. We demonstrate the excellent performance of METRIC in minimizing the simulated random errors, particularly for nutrients metabolized by gut bacteria in both synthetic and three real-world datasets. Further research is warranted to examine the utility of METRIC to correct actual measurement errors in self-reported dietary assessment instruments.

Abstract
Measures that can provide reasonably accurate estimates of sugar-containing beverage (SCB) intake among children are needed. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the relative validity of a short beverage screener (Nutrition and Health Questionnaire, NHQ) compared to a 24-hour recall (Automated Self-Administered 24-h (ASA24) Dietary Assessment Tool-Canada) for assessing parent proxy-reported daily SCB intake among children aged 4-14 years from the TARGet Kids! research network in Toronto, Canada. Children for whom a NHQ completed between March 2018 and June 2019 and an ASA24 completed within one year were included. A total of 471 parents who completed the NHQ beverage screener were also asked to complete the ASA24. One-hundred sixty-three completed the ASA24 and of this group, 109 were analyzed. Estimates of daily intake of 100% juices, sweetened drinks and soda, and total SCBs from the two measures were compared. The mean difference in beverage intake, Spearman correlations, and Bland-Altman plots were estimated for continuous measures. The kappa coefficient, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated for dichotomous measures of any daily intake versus none. The mean difference in total SCB intake between the NHQ and ASA24 was 0.14 cups/day (95% CI 0.01, 0.29) and the correlation was 0.43 (95% CI 0.26, 0.57). Sensitivity and specificity for any daily SCB intake were 0.63 and 0.76, respectively. Overall, parent proxy-reporting of children's total SCB intake from a beverage screener can provide reasonable estimates of SCB intake when detailed dietary assessment is not feasible.

Abstract
Background Assessing dietary intake and eating behavior in children is challenging, owing to children's undeveloped food knowledge and perception of portion sizes. Additionally, caregivers cannot always provide complete surrogate information. Consequently, validated dietary behavior assessment methods for children are limited, but technological innovations offer opportunities for the development of new tools. One of the first steps in the developmental process of a newly developed pediatric dietary assessment tool includes an alignment of the needs and preferences of pediatric dieticians (PDs) as potential users. Objectives To explore opinions of Dutch PDs about traditional dietary behavior assessment methods for children and potential technological innovations to replace or support traditional methods. Methods Ten PDs participated in semistructured interviews (total of 7.5 h) based on 2 theoretical frameworks, and data saturation was reached after the seventh interview. Interview transcripts were inductively coded in an iterative process, and overarching themes and domains were identified. Interview data were then used as input for an extensive online survey completed by 31 PDs who were not involved in the initial interview rounds. Results PDs discussed their perspective on dietary behavior assessments in 4 domains: traditional methods, technological methods, future methods, and external influences on these methods. Generally, PDs felt that traditional methods supported them in reaching their desired goals. However, the time needed to obtain a comprehensive overview of dietary intake behavior and the reliability of conventional methods were mentioned as limitations. For future technologies, PDs mention the ease of use and engaging in children as opportunities. Conclusions PDs have a positive attitude toward the use of technology for dietary behavior assessments. Further development of assessment technologies should be tailored to the needs of children in different care situations and age categories to increase its usability among children, their caregivers, and dietician. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The gut microbiota interacts with diet to affect body health throughout the life cycle. Critical periods of growth, such as infancy and puberty, are characterised by microbiota remodelling and changes in dietary habits. While the relationship between gut microbiota and growth in early life has been studied, our understanding of this relationship during puberty remains limited. Here, we describe the MIcrobiota, GROWth and Diet in peripubertal children (The MiGrowD) study, which aims to assess the tripartite growth-gut microbiota-diet relationship at puberty. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The MiGrowD study will be a cross-sectional, community-based study involving children 8-12 years participating in the TARGet Kids! COHORT TARGet Kids! is a primary healthcare practice-based research network in Canada. Children will be asked to provide a stool sample, complete two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls and a pubertal self-assessment based on Tanner Stages. Anthropometry will also be conducted. The primary outcome is the association between gut microbiota composition and longitudinal growth from birth until entry into the study. Anthropometrics data from birth will be from the data collected prospectively through TARGet Kids!. Body mass index z-scores will be calculated according to WHO. The secondary outcome is the association between gut microbiota, diet and pubertal stage. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethics approval has been obtained by the Hospital for Sick Children and St. Michael's Hospital-Unity Health, and the University of Toronto. Results will be disseminated in the public and academic sector, including participants, TARGet Kids! primary healthcare physicians teams, scientists via participation in the TARGet Kids! science and physician meetings, conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The MiGrowD study results will help researchers understand the relationships underlying growth, gut microbiota and pubertal maturation in children.

Abstract
There is an increasing prevalence of poor health behaviors during childhood, particularly in terms of physical activity and nutrition. This trend has occurred alongside a growing body of evidence linking these behaviors to cognitive function. B-vitamins are thought to be particularly important in the neural development that occurs during pregnancy, as well as in healthy cognitive aging. However, much less is known regarding the role of B-vitamins during childhood. Given that preadolescent childhood is a critical period for cognitive development, this study investigated the relationship between specific aspects of nutrition, particularly B-vitamins, and related health factors (e.g., body mass, fitness) on selective attention in children. Children (n = 85; 8-11 years) completed a selective attention task to assess inhibition. Participant's dietary intake was collected using the Automated Self-Administered 24-h dietary assessment tool. Correlations between specific nutrients, BMI, fitness, and task performance were investigated. After accounting for demographic variables and total caloric intake, increased B-vitamin intake (i.e., thiamin and folic acid) was associated with shorter reaction times (p's < 0.05), fitness was associated with greater response accuracy (p < 0.05), and increased BMI was related to increased variability in reaction times (p < 0.05). Together, these findings suggest that aspects of health may have unique contributions on cognitive performance. Proper physical health and nutrition are imperative for effective cognitive functioning in preadolescent children. Targeted efforts aimed at health education amongst this population could ensure proper cognitive development during school-age years, providing a strong foundation throughout life.
