Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) refers to a cognitive decline associated with cancer or its treatments. While research into CRCI is expanding, evidence remains scattered due to differences in study designs, methodologies, and definitions. The present umbrella review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence regarding the impact of different breast cancer therapies on cognitive functioning, with a particular focus on the interplay among objective cognitive deficits (ie, measured with standardized tests), subjective cognitive concerns, (ie, self-reported), and other mediating psycho-physical factors. METHODS The search was made in Pubmed, Embase, and Scopus for articles published until July 2023, following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis protocol. RESULTS Chemotherapy and endocrine therapy appear consistently associated with CRCI in patients with breast cancer, primarily affecting memory, attention/concentration, executive functioning, and processing speed. Subjective cognitive concerns were often found weakly or not associated with neuropsychological test results, while overall CRCI seemed consistently associated with psychological distress, fatigue, sleep quality, and inflammatory and biological factors. CONCLUSION Current evidence suggests that CRCI is common after chemotherapy and endocrine therapy for breast cancer. However, heterogeneity in study designs and the scarcity of studies on more recent treatments such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies, highlight the need for more systematic and harmonized studies, possibly taking into account the complex and multifactorial etiology of CRCI. This may provide valuable insights into CRCI's underlying mechanisms and potential new ways to treat it.

Abstract
Background The focus on central nervous system (CNS) malignancies has overshadowed scant but substantial research that suggests non-central nervous cancer patients experience cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), which affects higher-order brain function and influences their quality of life. Despite such evidence of the occurrence of CRCI among non-CNS cancer patients, the factors associated with the CRCIs remain a highly debated issue with discrepancies noted. Whether non-CNS cancer itself can affect the brain independent of cancer treatment is an important question to unpack. This necessitates further research, particularly in the sub-Saharan region where the evidence is limited. Methods This study aims to assess the effect of chemotherapy-associated cognitive and affective changes in non-CNS cancer patients. A non-experimental, time-series, correlational design will be used, in which a battery of computerized neuropsychological tests will be administered, including the e-MoCA, the CNS Vital Signs, the Patient Health Questionnaire-4, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue, and the Semi-structured Interview Schedule. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis will be conducted, as well as NVivo thematic analysis of the qualitative data. The scope of the neurocognitive issues and risk factors that may be present in cancer patients and survivors in a developing environment could be determined by this study. Implications The study is expected to extend research on the extent at which cancer and cancer treatments are associated with neurocognitive changes among non-CNS cancer patients and their impact on their quality of life in the local context. The results are expected to inform treatment providers to develop treatment guidelines tailored for individuals diagnosed with cancer and who have received cancer treatment, as well as individualized psychosocial interventions aimed at addressing psychological challenges associated with quality of life among cancer survivors.

Abstract
Childhood is recognised as a period of immense physical and emotional development, and this, in part, is driven by underlying neurophysiological transformations. These neurodevelopmental processes are unique to the paediatric brain and are facilitated by augmented rates of neuroplasticity and expanded neural stem cell populations within neurogenic niches. However, given the immaturity of the developing central nervous system, innate protective mechanisms such as neuroimmune and antioxidant responses are functionally naïve which results in periods of heightened sensitivity to neurotoxic insult. This is highly relevant in the context of paediatric cancer, and in particular, the neurocognitive symptoms associated with treatment, such as surgery, radio- and chemotherapy. The vulnerability of the developing brain may increase susceptibility to damage and persistent symptomology, aligning with reports of more severe neurocognitive dysfunction in children compared to adults. It is therefore surprising, given this intensified neurocognitive burden, that most of the pre-clinical, mechanistic research focuses exclusively on adult populations and extrapolates findings to paediatric cohorts. Given this dearth of age-specific research, throughout this review we will draw comparisons with neurodevelopmental disorders which share comparable pathways to cancer treatment related side-effects. Furthermore, we will examine the unique nuances of the paediatric brain along with the somatic systems which influence neurological function. In doing so, we will highlight the importance of developing in vitro and in vivo paediatric disease models to produce age-specific discovery and clinically translatable research.

Abstract
Objective This narrative review aims to (1) identify neuropsychological tests for assessing cognitive function impairment in patients with cancer, specifically in the domains of attention and memory, (2) summarize the characteristics of these tests, including cognitive function domains, test content, readability, and psychometric quality, and (3) evaluate the feasibility of each test in cancer care. Methods Data sources include published test manuals, documents from official web pages, and published journal articles. Results Our study identified eight neuropsychological tests that are most frequently used to assess the attention and memory domains of objective cognitive function in patients with breast cancer. These tests include the California Verbal Learning Test, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, CNS Vital Signs, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Memory Scale, and Trail Making Test. They demonstrate acceptable evidence of psychometric quality and varying degrees of feasibility. Test feasibility is influenced by factors such as short testing time, brevity and comprehensiveness, clear cognitive domain distinctions, availability of normative data, minimal practice effects, ease of administration, and limited attention-span requirements. These attributes determine a test's feasibility for use in cancer care. Among the evaluated measures, the California Verbal Learning Test for memory, the Trail Making Test for attention, and the CNS Vital Signs for comprehensive assessment emerge as the most practical choices for cancer care. Conclusions The assessment and management of cognitive function impairment are crucial for enhancing the quality of life in cancer survivors. Nurses should possess knowledge of assessment tools for early detection and the ongoing monitoring of this symptom's progression.

Abstract
Background Early detection of cognitive impairment in patients undergoing ileostomy for colorectal cancer may help improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Identifying risk factors and clinically accessible factors is crucial for prevention and treatment. Objective This retrospective study aimed to identify risk factors for post-operative cognitive impairment in patients undergoing ileostomy for colorectal cancer and to explore potential factors for its prevention and treatment. Methods A total of 108 cases were selected and included in the study. Patient data including general characteristics, disease stage, complications, and chemotherapy status were collected, and sleep quality and cognitive function were assessed using questionnaires and follow-up. Patients were randomly divided into training and validation groups. A random forest model was used to rank clinical features based on their contribution to predicting the prognosis of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). Nomograms were constructed using the support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) method, and the minimal root-mean-square error (RMSE) values were compared to select the best model. Regression analysis was performed to determine independent predictors. Results Significant differences were observed in age, body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption, frequency of physical activity, comorbidity, and cancer-related anemia (CRA) between the CRCI and non-CRCI groups. Random forest analysis revealed that age, BMI, exercise intensity, PSQI scores, and history of hypertension were the most significant predictors of outcome. Univariate logistic regression analysis of 18 variables revealed that age, alcohol consumption, exercise intensity, BMI, and comorbidity were significantly associated with the outcome of CRCI (p < 0.05). Univariate and multivariate models with P-values less than 0.1 and 0.2, respectively, showed better predictive performance for CRCI. The results of univariate analysis were plotted on a nomogram to evaluate the risk of developing CRCI after colorectal cancer surgery. The nomogram was found to have good predictive performance. Finally, regression analysis revealed that age, exercise intensity, BMI, comorbidity, and CRA were independent predictors of CRCI. Conclusions This retrospective cohort study revealed that age, exercise intensity, BMI, comorbidity, CRA, and mobility are independent predictors of cognitive impairment in patients undergoing ileostomy for colorectal cancer. Identifying these factors and potential factors may have clinical implications in predicting and managing post-operative cognitive impairment in this patient population.

Abstract
Bacteriophages have emerged as versatile tools in the field of bioengineering, with enormous potential in tissue engineering, vaccine development, and immunotherapy. The genetic makeup of phages can be harnessed for the development of novel DNA vaccines and antigen display systems, as they can provide a highly organized and repetitive presentation of antigens to immune cells. Bacteriophages have opened new possibilities for the targeting of specific molecular determinants of cancer cells. Phages can be used as anticancer agents and carriers of imaging molecules and therapeutics. In this review, we explored the role of bacteriophages and bacteriophage engineering in targeted cancer therapy. The question of how the engineered bacteriophages can interact with the biological and immunological systems is emphasized to comprehend the underlying mechanism of phage use in cancer immunotherapy. The effectiveness of phage display technology in identifying high-affinity ligands for substrates, such as cancer cells and tumor-associated molecules, and the emerging field of phage engineering and its potential in the development of effective cancer treatments are discussed. We also highlight phage usage in clinical trials as well as the related patents. This review provides a new insight into engineered phage-based cancer vaccines.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative brain disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, is characterized by memory loss and cognitive decline. Low levels of acetylcholine and abnormal levels of beta-amyloid, T protein aggregation, inflammation, and oxidative stress, have been associated with AD, and therefore, research has been oriented towards the cholinergic system and primarily on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. In this review, we are focusing on the discovery of AChE inhibitors using computer-based modeling and simulation techniques, covering the recent literature from 2018-2022. More specifically, the review discusses the structures of novel, potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and their binding mode to AChE, as well as the physicochemical requirements for the design of potential AChE inhibitors.

Abstract
Patients with cancer may suffer from a decline in their cognitive function after various cancer therapies, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and in some cases, this decline in cognitive function persists even years after completion of treatment. Chemobrain or chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment, a well-established clinical syndrome, has become an increasing concern as the number of successfully treated cancer patients has increased significantly. Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment can originate from direct neurotoxicity, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress, resulting in alterations in grey matter volume, white matter integrity, and brain connectivity. Surgery has been associated with exacerbating the inflammatory response associated with chemotherapy and predisposes patients to develop postoperative cognitive dysfunction. As the proportion of patients living longer after these therapies increases, the magnitude of impact and growing concern of post-treatment cognitive dysfunction in these patients has also come to the fore. We review the clinical presentation, potential mechanisms, predisposing factors, diagnostic methods, neuropsychological testing, and imaging findings of chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment and its intersection with postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
Clinical studies suggest that chemotherapy is associated with long-term cognitive impairment in some patients. Several underlying mechanisms have been proposed; however, the etiology of chemotherapy-related cognitive dysfunction remains relatively unknown. There is evidence that oligodendrocytes and white matter tracts within the CNS may be particularly vulnerable to chemotherapy-related damage and dysfunction. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) have been used to detect and measure functional integrity of myelin in a variety of animal models of autoimmune disorders and demyelinating diseases. Limited evidence suggests that increases in interpeak latencies, associated with disrupted impulse conduction, can be detected in ABRs following 5-fluorouracil administration in mice. It is unknown if similar functional disruptions can be detected following treatment with other chemotherapeutic compounds and the extent to which alterations in ABR signals represent robust and long-lasting impairments associated with chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment. Thus, C57BL/6 J mice were treated every 3rd day for a total of 3 injections with low or high dose cyclophosphamide, or doxorubicin. ABRs of mice were assessed on days 1, 7, 14, 56 and 6 months following completion of chemotherapy administration. There were timing and amplitude differences in the ABRs of the doxorubicin and the high dose cyclophosphamide groups relative to the control animals. However, despite significant toxic effects as assessed by weight loss, the changes in the ABR were transient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Problems in affective and cognitive functioning are among the most common concurrent symptoms that breast cancer patients report. Social relationships may provide some explanations of the clinical variability in affective-cognitive symptoms. Evidence suggests that social relationships (functional and structural aspects) can be associated with patients' affective-cognitive symptoms; however, such an association has not been well studied in the context of breast cancer. PURPOSE The purpose of this scoping review was to address the following question: What social relationships are associated with affective-cognitive symptoms of women with breast cancer? METHODS This scoping review used the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and PRISMA-Sc. Studies published by February 2022 were searched using four databases: MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase (Elsevier), PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), and Web of Science (Clarivate). All retrieved citations were independently screened and eligibility for inclusion was determined by study team members. Extracted data included research aims, design, sample, type and measures of social relationships (functional and structural), and the association between social relationships and affective-cognitive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 70 studies were included. Affective symptoms were positively associated with social support, family functioning, quality of relationships, social networks, and social integration, whereas the negative association was found with social constraints. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest positive social relationships may mitigate affective symptoms of women with breast cancer. Thus, health care providers need to educate patients about the importance of building solid social relationships and encourage them to participate in a supportive network of friends and family members.

Abstract
Chemobrain is one of the major side effects of chemotherapy, despite increased research, the mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced cognitive changes remain unknown. Though, several possibly important candidate mechanisms have been identified and will be studied further in the future. Chemobrain is characterized by memory loss, cognitive impairment, difficulty in language, concentration, acceleration, and learning. The major characteristic of chemobrain is oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, immune dysregulation, hormonal alteration, white matter abnormalities, and DNA damage. Berberine (BBR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from various berberine species. BBR is a small chemical that easily passes the blood-brain barrier (BBB), making it useful for treating neurodegenerative diseases. Many studies on the pharmacology of BBR have been reported in the past. Furthermore, several clinical and experimental research indicates that BBR has a variety of pharmacological effects. So, in this review, we explore the pathogenesis of chemobrain and the neuroprotective potential of BBR against chemobrain. We also introduced the therapeutic role of BBR in various neurodegenerative and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, mental depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and also some stroke.

Abstract
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been recognized as significant participants in the progression of different cancers; however, the detailed mechanisms of circRNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. In this study, hsa_circ_0001394 was identified by RNA-seq analysis, and hsa_circ_0001394 was determined to be highly expressed in HCC specimens and cell lines. Patients with high expression of hsa_circ_0001394 tended to exhibit poor survival. Increased hsa_circ_0001394 expression in plasma was closely correlated with clinicopathological features including elevated vascular invasion and an advanced TNM stage, as indicated by alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) analysis. Hsa_circ_0001394 promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HCC cells, whereas knockdown of hsa_circ_0001394 inhibited HCC tumorigenesis in vivo. In addition, mechanistic studies showed that miR-527 negatively interacted with hsa_circ_0001394. Furthermore, UBE2A was revealed to serve as a target of miR-527. Overall, the present study suggested that hsa_circ_0001394 may function as a sponge to promote HCC progression by regulating the miR-527/UBE2A pathway. Thus, hsa_circ_0001394 may become a promising biomarker and potential therapeutic target in HCC treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 60% of the more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors (BCSs) living in the United States are 60 years or older. Breast cancer survivors experience many symptoms including cognitive dysfunction; however, little is known regarding how age affects these symptoms. OBJECTIVE This integrative review was conducted to synthesize the literature on cognitive dysfunction in older BCSs. The purpose was to (1) describe the prevalence of objective and subjective cognitive dysfunctions and (2) examine factors associated with cognitive dysfunction in older BCSs. METHODS Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review methodology was used to examine cognitive dysfunction in BCSs 60 years or older. RESULTS Twelve quantitative studies were included. Up to 41% of older BCSs experienced cognitive dysfunction on neuropsychological examination, and up to 64% reported cognitive dysfunction on subjective measures pretreatment. Approximately half of older BCSs experienced cognitive decline from pretreatment to posttreatment regardless of cognitive measure. The domains most impacted were memory, executive functioning, and processing speed. Objective and subjective cognitive dysfunctions were associated with age, comorbidities, chemotherapy receipt, sleep, neuropsychological symptom cluster, frailty, and quality of life. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive dysfunction among older BCSs was common both prior to and following treatment. Cognitive dysfunction was associated with multiple factors that are compounded in the aging population and could be detrimental to quality of life and independent living. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE Early assessment and intervention by healthcare providers, including nurses, for cognitive dysfunction in older BCSs are essential. Future research should focus on evidence-based interventions for cognitive dysfunction incorporating the unique needs of older BCSs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (FACT-Cog) is a questionnaire that is used to evaluate the quality of life and cognitive functions according to individual self-reports. The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the FACT-Cog. METHODS Cancer patients who were treated with chemo or radiotherapy and had a score of 24/30 and more in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were included in this study. Cognitive functions assessed with the FACT-Cog and the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire Core 30: Cognitive Function subscale (EORTC QLQ-CF). RESULTS One hundred and forty cancer patients [female = 87 (62.1%), male = 53 (37.9%)] were included. The mean age of the participants was 47.93 ± 11.90 years. The Cronbach's α of the FACT-Cog scale was 0.82. Test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient values of the FACT-Cog questionnaire were varied from 0.855 to 0.954. There were found low correlations between the total score of the FACT-Cog and the MMSE (r = 0.26, p = 0.002), and moderate correlations between the EORTC QLQ-CF subscale and the FACT-Cog (r = -0.43; p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS It showed the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the FACT-Cog questionnaire for cancer patients. It may be beneficial to use this questionnaire for the effects of cancer treatment.

Abstract
Adults with non-central nervous system (CNS) cancers frequently report problems in attention, memory and executive function during or after chemotherapy, referred to as cancer-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD). Despite numerous studies investigating CRCD, there is no consensus regarding the brain areas implicated. We sought to determine if there are brain areas that consistently show either hyper- or hypo-activation in people treated with chemotherapy for non-CNS cancer (Chemo+). Using activation likelihood estimation on brain coordinates from 14 fMRI studies yielding 25 contrasts from 375 Chemo+ and 429 chemotherapy-naive controls while they performed cognitive tasks, the meta-analysis yielded two significant clusters which are part of the frontoparietal attention network, both showing lower activation in Chemo+. One cluster peaked in the left superior parietal cortex, extending into precuneus, inferior parietal lobule, and angular gyrus. The other peaked in the right superior prefrontal areas, extending into inferior prefrontal cortex. We propose that these observed lower activations reflect a dysfunction in mobilizing and/or sustaining attention due to depletion of cognitive resources. This could explain higher level of mental fatigue reported by Chemo+ and why cancer survivors report problems in a wide variety of cognitive domains.

Abstract
Simple Summary Up to 70% of chemotherapy-treated patients experience problems with memory and concentration, potentially caused by direct and indirect neurotoxicity, such as (neuro-)inflammatory processes. Can neuroinflammation changes be detected in chemotherapy-treated patients with breast cancer using translocator protein [18F]DPA714 simultaneous positron emission tomographic- and magnetic resonance imaging? Moreover, what is the association with clinical biomarkers? In a study including 19 chemotherapy-treated breast cancer patients, 18 chemotherapy-naïve and 37 healthy controls, we found significant relative glial overexpression in parietal and occipital brain regions in chemotherapy-treated patients compared to controls, which were associated with cognitive abnormalities and markers of neuronal survival. Shortly after ending chemotherapy, changes in brain neuroinflammation seem to occur, possibly contributing to the cognitive decline seen in breast cancer patients. Additionally, blood levels of an axonal damage marker were 20-fold higher in chemotherapy-treated patients, providing evidence for its use as a biomarker to assess neurotoxic effects of anticancer chemotherapies. Abstract To uncover mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment in breast cancer, we studied new biomarkers of neuroinflammation and neuronal survival. This cohort study included 74 women (47 ± 10 years) from 22 October 2017 until 20 August 2020. Nineteen chemotherapy-treated and 18 chemotherapy-naïve patients with breast cancer were assessed one month after the completion of surgery and/or chemotherapy, and 37 healthy controls were included. Assessments included neuropsychological testing, questionnaires, blood sampling for 17 inflammatory and two neuronal survival markers (neurofilament light-chain (NfL), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and PET-MR neuroimaging. To investigate neuroinflammation, translocator protein (TSPO) [18F]DPA714-PET-MR was acquired for 15 participants per group, and evaluated by volume of distribution normalized to the cerebellum. Chemotherapy-treated patients showed higher TSPO expression, indicative for neuroinflammation, in the occipital and parietal lobe when compared to healthy controls or chemotherapy-naïve patients. After partial-volume correction, differences with healthy controls persisted (pFWE < 0.05). Additionally, compared to healthy- or chemotherapy-naïve controls, cognitive impairment (17–22%) and altered levels in blood markers (F ≥ 3.7, p ≤ 0.031) were found in chemotherapy-treated patients. NfL, an axonal damage marker, was particularly sensitive in differentiating groups (F = 105, p = 4.2 × 10 −21), with levels 20-fold higher in chemotherapy-treated patients. Lastly, in chemotherapy-treated patients alone, higher local TSPO expression was associated with worse cognitive performance, higher blood levels of BDNF/NfL, and decreased fiber cross-section in the corpus callosum (pFWE < 0.05). These findings suggest that increased neuroinflammation is associated with chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment in breast cancer. Additionally, NfL could be a useful biomarker to assess neurotoxic effects of anticancer chemotherapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a known adverse event that can impact cancer survivors, resulting in long-standing effect on quality of life and activities of daily living. Currently, there is limited knowledge regarding the aetiology and therapy for CRCI. Although CRCI following autologous stem cell transplantation (AuSCT) is emerging as a potentially significant concern for patients with underlying haematological malignancies, it is an area that requires further research. AIMS This pilot study aimed to assess (i) the prevalence of CRCI in patients with haematological malignancies both pre-AuSCT and post-AuSCT and (ii) the feasibility of a cognitive rehabilitation programme (CRP) in survivorship care post-AuSCT. METHODS Over a 12-month period, consecutive patients planned for AuSCT were approached for the study. Enrolled patients were administered a 9-week course of CRP, commencing day 40 ± 5 post-AuSCT. Participants were evaluated using a neuropsychological tool and validated questionnaires at baseline, pre-CRP (day 40 ± 5 post-AuSCT), post-CRP and 6 months post-CRP. RESULTS Thirty-two patients were enrolled. The mean age was 59 years (SD = 11.5), 23 (72%) were male and 18 (56%) had multiple myeloma. Participants reported high satisfaction using the CRP, and most devoted significant amount of time as requested. CONCLUSIONS While there appeared to be a low incidence of significant CRCI in our patient population, the incorporation of CRP in survivorship care appeared to be feasible. A larger randomised study examining the efficacy of CRP should be further explored.

Abstract
Not surprisingly, our knowledge of the impact of radiation on the brain has evolved considerably. Decades of work have struggled with identifying the critical cellular targets in the brain, the latency of functional change and understanding how irradiation alters the balance between excitatory and inhibitory circuits. Radiation-induced cell kill following clinical fractionation paradigms pointed to both stromal and parenchymal targets but also defined an exquisite sensitivity of neurogenic populations of newly born cells in the brain. It became more and more apparent too, that acute (days) events transpiring after exposure were poorly prognostic of the late (months-years) waves of radiation injury believed to underlie neurocognitive deficits. Much of these gaps in knowledge persisted as NASA became interested in how exposure to much different radiation types, doses and dose rates that characterize the space radiation environment might impair central nervous system functionality, with possibly negative implications for deep space travel. Now emerging evidence from researchers engaged in clinical, translational and environmental radiation sciences have begun to fill these gaps and have uncovered some surprising similarities in the response of the brain to seemingly disparate exposure scenarios. This article highlights many of the commonalities between the vastly different irradiation paradigms that distinguish clinical treatments from occupational exposures in deep space.

Abstract
Objectives Chemotherapy induces cognitive impairments including memory impairment attention deficit and executive dysfunction in patients with breast cancer (BC) during or after chemotherapy. Previous studies identified brain structural and functional changes in BC patients receiving chemotherapy; however, there are no studies assessing functional connectivity (FC) between homotopic brain regions in BC patients using a voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method. In the present study, we explored cognitive function and whole brain homotopic FC in BC patients receiving chemotherapy compared with healthy controls using the VMHC method. Methods The present cross-sectional study included 35 premenopausal women with breast cancer who received chemotherapy, as well as 32 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, which measured homotopic brain FC, and cognitive neuropsychological assessments evaluating attention, memory, and executive function domains. Results The BC group had lower VMHC than the HC group in the cingulated posterior, insular and postcentral regions. No region exhibited higher VMHC in the BC group than in HC group. Correlation analysis in the BC group indicated that VMHC values in the cingulated posterior were significantly correlated with executive function tests, and that the VMHC values in the insular were significantly correlated with memory tests. Conclusion The present study showed that VMHC decreased in different brain regions including cingulated posterior, insular and postcentral regions. A significant correlation was observed between the VMHC values in the brain regions and neuropsychological tests. These results suggested that changes in VMHC values in different brain regions may underlie cognitive changes in BC patients receiving chemotherapy.

Abstract
Chemo brain, a constellation of cognitive deficiencies followed by chemotherapy drugs, used to treat different types of cancers and adversely impacts the quality of life of a cancer survivor. The underlying mechanism of chemo brain remains vague, thus delaying the advancement of efficient treatments. Unfortunately, there is no US FDA approved medicine for chemo brain and often medicines considered for chemo brain are already the ones approved for other diseases. Nevertheless, researches exploring stem cell transplantation in different neurodegenerative diseases demonstrate that cellular transplantation could reverse chemotherapy-induced chemo brain. This review talks about the mechanism behind the cognitive impairments instigated by different chemotherapy drugs used in cancer treatment, and how stem cell therapy could be advantageous to overcome this disease.

Abstract
Hypoxia-mediated cognitive dysfunction can be transiently mitigated by exercise in a laboratory-based setting. Whether this effect holds true in the context of high altitude hypoxia has not been determined. We investigated the effect of acute aerobic exercise on cognitive function (CF) at low (1400m) and high altitude (4240m). Fifteen volunteers (24.1±3.5yrs; 9 females) exercised for 20-min at 40-60% of their heart rate reserve at low and high altitude. CF was assessed before and 10-min after exercise using a tablet-based battery of executive function tests. A sea-level control group (n=13; 24.2±2.4 years; 9 females) performed time-matched CF tests to assess the contribution of a learning effects due to repeated testing. Measures of resting CF were unaffected by ascent to high altitude. Following high altitude exercise, performance significantly worsened on the digit symbol substitution task - a test of processing speed, working memory, and visuospatial attention (z=0.01 vs. -0.59, p=0.02, η2=0.35). No effect was found on other measures of CF following exercise. There was no association between changes in peripheral oxygen saturation and changes in CF following high altitude exercise (r=0.22, p=0.44), but higher hemoglobin concentration at high altitude was associated with a decline in CF following exercise at high altitude (r=-0.65, p=0.02). Acute aerobic exercise performed at high altitude impairs some aspects of CF, whereas other CF tests remain unchanged. The strong ecological validity of this study warrants attention and follow-up investigations are needed to better characterize selective impairment of CF with high altitude exercise.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics (Version 4) Traumatic Brain Injury Military (ANAM4 TBI-MIL) is commonly administered among U.S. service members both pre-deployment and following TBI. The current study used the ANAM4 TBI-MIL to develop a cognition summary score for TBI research and clinical trials, comparing eight composite scores based on their distributions and sensitivity/specificity when differentiating between service members with and without mild TBI (MTBI). METHOD Male service members with MTBI (n = 56; Mdn = 11 days-since-injury) or no self-reported TBI history (n = 733) completed eight ANAM4 TBI-MIL tests. Their throughput scores (correct responses/minute) were used to calculate eight composite scores: the overall test battery mean (OTBM); global deficit score (GDS); neuropsychological deficit score-weighted (NDS-W); low score composite (LSC); number of scores <50th, ≤16th percentile, or ≤5th percentile; and the ANAM Composite Score (ACS). RESULTS The OTBM and ACS were normally distributed. Other composites had skewed, zero-inflated distributions (62.9% had GDS = 0). All composites differed significantly between participants with and without MTBI (p < .001), with deficit scores showing the largest effect sizes (d = 1.32-1.47). The Area Under the Curve (AUC) was lowest for number of scores ≤5th percentile (AUC = 0.653) and highest for the LSC, OTBM, ACS, and NDS-W (AUC = 0.709-0.713). CONCLUSIONS The ANAM4 TBI-MIL has no well-validated composite score. The current study examined multiple candidate composite scores, finding that deficit scores showed larger group differences than the OTBM, but similar AUC values. The deficit scores were highly correlated. Future studies are needed to determine whether these scores show less redundancy among participants with more severe TBIs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment in survivors of blood or bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is well documented. However, to the authors' knowledge, the clinical relevance of self-endorsed cognitive problems and their relation to objectively assessed cognitive impairment is not known. METHODS The authors assessed cognitive impairment in 378 BMT recipients (median age, 52.2 years, 40% of whom were female and 68% of whom were non-Hispanic white) and 98 healthy controls at 5 predetermined time points: at baseline (before BMT) and at 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after BMT. Self-endorsed cognitive problems were evaluated using the Neuropsychological Impairment Scale (NIS) and correlated with a standardized 2-hour battery of objective cognitive testing at each time point. The authors examined the magnitude of difference in self-endorsed cognitive problems between BMT recipients and healthy controls, and the rate of change in scores over time. Multivariable analyses were used to identify clinical and/or demographic variables associated with self-endorsed cognitive problems. The authors also examined the association between cognitive impairment and returning to work after BMT. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, BMT recipients endorsed more cognitive problems (P < .001) at all time points, and the rate of change in NIS scores was found to be significantly greater in BMT recipients. Fatigue was associated with greater endorsement of cognitive problems at 1 year after BMT (odds ratio, 4.23; 95% CI, 2.1-8.3 [P < .001]). Overall, there was a statistically significant, modest correlation noted between self-endorsed cognitive problems and objective cognitive impairment (range, 0.401-0.445 [P ≤ .01]). Higher self-endorsed cognitive problems were associated with a 3.7-fold (P = .02) higher odds of not returning to work at 3 years after BMT. CONCLUSIONS The results of the current study demonstrated that self-endorsed cognitive problems can help to identify vulnerable patient subpopulations for detailed cognitive assessment and possible cognitive remediation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review of longitudinal studies, assessing subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) reported by adult cancer patients, aimed to summarize evidence on the impact of chemotherapy on SCI, identify moderators of SCI, and evaluate methodological issues. METHODS Data accrued from Pubmed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychInfo, and the Cochrane library. Inclusion criteria were original studies, an exclusively adult sample, valid and reliable subjective cognitive measures, and at least one baseline data point prior to and another after the initiation of chemotherapy. Data were collected on the sample composition, data-collection time points, outcome measures, statistical analysis, and major findings (ie, longitudinal changes in prevalence, severity, and associated factors). RESULTS Forty articles published between 2004 and 2019 were retained: 21 examined chemotherapy-treated patients only, and 19 employed control groups. Findings were mixed, with slightly more studies supporting the impact of chemotherapy on SCI. SCI tended to be more prevalent and severe after initiating chemotherapy, compared with patients' own baseline and controls not treated with chemotherapy. Impact appeared to be acute and more likely limited to subsamples. Most studies examining non-breast-cancer samples reported the lack or limited impact of chemotherapy on SCI. The most consistent moderators were depression and fatigue. Methodological issues regarding sampling design, measurement, and statistical analysis were discussed. CONCLUSION More rigorously designed longitudinal studies would clarify direct and indirect effects of chemotherapy on SCI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Positive results have appeared among nonmetastatic breast cancer patients with the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). However, earlier stage patient results have been mixed. This novelty of this study was the focus on stage I and II breast cancer patients. The objective of the current study was to conduct a meta-analysis of psychosocial functions in early-stage breast cancer survivors to determine its efficacy. METHODS A search of Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, and PubMed yielded 3237 abstracts, which were independently evaluated by research pairs. Meta-analysis was conducted on 8 studies that included a total of 1053 patients. Psychosocial functions were categorized according to 3 domains: (1) anxiety, (2) depression, and (3) quality of life. RESULTS Improvement in anxiety was observed in patients treated with CBT relative to controls without CBT ( P = .04). Depression and quality of life improvement was not observed in the CBT group within or after 4 months of treatment ( P > .05). CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that observed improvements in anxiety in patients with early-stage breast cancer were moderate. The effectiveness of CBT for the improvement of patient outcomes could not be determined, given the methodological and clinical shortcomings of the included trials.

Abstract
Objective Many cancer patients complain about cognitive dysfunction. While cognitive deficits have been attributed to the side effects of chemotherapy, there is evidence for impairment at disease onset, prior to cancer-directed therapy. Further debated issues concern the relationship between self-reported complaints and objective test performance and the role of psychological distress. Method We assessed performance on neuropsychological tests of attention and memory and obtained estimates of subjective distress and quality of life in 27 breast cancer patients and 20 healthy controls. Testing in patients took place shortly after the initial diagnosis, but prior to subsequent therapy. Results While patients showed elevated distress, cognitive performance differed on a few subtests only. Patients showed slower processing speed and poorer verbal memory than controls. Objective and self-reported cognitive function were unrelated, and psychological distress correlated more strongly with subjective complaints than with neuropsychological test performance. Conclusion This study provides further evidence of limited cognitive deficits in cancer patients prior to the onset of adjuvant therapy. Self-reported cognitive deficits seem more closely related to psychological distress than to objective test performance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adults with cancer frequently report symptoms such as decline in cognitive function throughout the trajectory of illness. Patients with cognitive deficits need support and assistance from their informal caregivers and often rely on them to manage their symptoms based on their degree of deficits. Patients spend a significant amount of time with their informal caregivers and become interdependent with each other. In spite of their interdependence, it is unclear whether patients' cognitive outcomes (ie, cognitive function) are associated with their informal caregivers. Therefore, the body of literature related to the association between caregiver characteristics and cognitive function of adults with cancer needs to be fully mapped with assessment for knowledge gaps. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Methods for this scoping review was informed by the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. Seven electronic databases will be searched: (1) PubMed (MEDLINE), (2) CINAHL, (3) Embase, (4) PsycINFO, (5) Scopus, (6) Sociological Abstracts and (7) ProQuest dissertation abstracts. In addition, the search for grey literature will include the conference abstracts available through Embase, Scopus and Sociological abstracts as well as dissertations available in ProQuest dissertations. All retrieved citations will be independently screened by two authors and eligibility will be determined based on inclusion and exclusion criteria at title and abstract level. Studies meeting inclusion criteria, will be screened at full text level by two reviewers followed by abstraction of included studies. Eligible studies will be collated, summarised and reported using the data charting form that research team developed. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This scoping review does not require ethics approval. Results of this scoping review will be disseminated via conference presentation and/or publication in a scientific journal.

Abstract
This study investigated volumetric brain changes and cognitive performance in premenopausal and postmenopausal patients treated for early-stage breast cancer. Participants underwent elaborate neurocognitive assessments (neuropsychological testing, cognitive failure questionnaire, and high-resolution T1-weighted structural MRI) before and after chemotherapy. Volumetric brain changes were estimated, using longitudinal deformation-based morphometry, and correlated with cognitive changes. In total, 180 women participated in this study, of whom 72 patients with breast cancer had received adjuvant chemotherapy (C+), 49 patients did not receive chemotherapy (C-), and 59 healthy controls (HC). The population was categorized into two age groups: A young group who were premenopausal and younger than 52 years at baseline (n = 55C+/32C-/41HC), and an older group who were postmenopausal and older than 60 years (n = 17C+/17C-/18HC). Cognitive impairment occurred after chemotherapy in both young and older patients, although older patients showed more decline in processing speed (Trail making test b). White matter volume expansion was observed after chemotherapy, only significantly present in the younger subgroup of patients. In patients not treated with chemotherapy, diffuse gray and white matter volume reduction was observed. Less white matter expansion concurred with more cognitive decline (r > .349, p < .05). In conclusion, we found age-dependent cognitive decline and white matter volume changes in patients with breast cancer after chemotherapy, which could possibly be linked to neuroinflammatory processes. White matter expansion after chemotherapy, more pronounced in premenopausal patients, correlated with less cognitive decline. This suggests such expansion to be age-dependent, possibly caused by a protective response in the younger brain to chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Anti-cancer therapies may deteriorate cognitive functioning, affective functioning and psychological well-being. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this prospective longitudinal pilot study, premenopausal and postmenopausal patients received adjuvant endocrine therapy (ET) (tamoxifen with or without LHRH analog or aromatase inhibitor) or were observed only (control group). At baseline testing and 6, 12 and 24 months thereafter, cognitive, depression and anxiety tests and quality of life (QOL) measurements were performed. RESULTS Overall, 46 cases were evaluated. None of the studied cognitive parameters differed between the subgroups or changed by time. No differences were found regarding anxiety, depression or QOL measures either. Baseline cognitive test and QOL results were in association with later anxiety and depression. CONCLUSION No cognitive impairment was found during the two years of ET. Baseline cognitive scores and QOL dimensions proved good predictors of later anxiety and depression.

Abstract
AIM The objective of the present review was to systematically characterize the types of cognitive impairment that are found in different non-brain types of cancer as measured by objective and validated tests, and also to further examine depression and cognitive function in cancer patients and explore their available rehabilitation treatments. RESULTS A total of 29 articles were reviewed. Most of these studies suggest that chemotherapy as well as the combination of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy can influence cognition in different types of cancer patients. Breast cancer patients appear to be the most affected in neuropsychological function, specifically in terms of cognitive impairment and reduced quality of life, as compared to other non-brain solid tumours. Overall, the most impaired functions were verbal ability, memory, executive function, and motor speed. CONCLUSION Chemotherapy-related cognitive dysfunction remains under-recognized and undertreated. The various studies reported differing and non-homogenous findings with mixed results, obtained by self-reporting and web-assisted assessment, with other confounding factors such as age and depression during both cancer diagnosis and treatment. An objective neuropsychological assessment is fundamental to avoid underestimation of the extent of chemobrain. Self-reported and web-assisted assessment may ultimately result in confusion between the neuropsychological signs of chemobrain versus those of depression.

Abstract
Circular (circ)RNA is a special type of endogenous RNA consisting of a covalently closed loop structure without 5' to 3' polarity and a polyadenylated tail. Accumulating evidence suggests that circRNAs play important roles in the development and progression of human cancers. However, the role of circRNAs in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is largely unknown. This was addressed in the present study using high-throughput sequencing to identify aberrantly expressed circRNAs in HCC patient tissue and cell lines. We found that circ-baculoviral IAP repeat-containing (BIRC)6 was upregulated in HCC tissue samples and cells; this was associated with the overall survival of HCC patients. circ-BIRC6 knockdown reduced HCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and enhanced their apoptosis. Additionally, circ-BIRC6 overexpression negatively regulated the expression of microRNA miR-3918, which was identified as an inhibitor of B cell lymphoma (Bcl)2. The tumor-suppressive effect of circ-BIRC6 deletion was abrogated by inhibiting miR-3918. These results indicate that circ-BIRC6 functions as a competing endogenous RNA that regulates Bcl2 expression by sponging miR-3918, and may serve as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for the treatment of HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast neoplasms are the most common cancer among women in Taiwan. Cognitive deficits are common complications of breast cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy. The most frequently observed disorders involve executive function and memory impairment. With improvements in tumor intervention and the consequent increase in the number of cancer survivors, the quality of life of patients has become an important issue. We are interested in the early effects of chemotherapy on the brain structures of patients. In addition, generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI), a wide range of q-space datasets for a more accurate and sophisticated diffusion MR approach, was first used in this topic. METHODS As diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is associated with restrictions in the resolution of crossing fibers, we attempted to use GQI, which can overcome these difficulties and is advantageous over DTI for tractography of the crossing fibers. This cross-sectional study included two groups: breast cancer survivors who had completed their chemotherapy (n = 19) and healthy controls (n = 20). All participants underwent diffusion MRI exams and neuropsychological assessments. We included four parts in our image analysis, i.e., voxel-based statistical analysis, multiple regression analysis, graph theoretical analysis and network-based statistical analysis. RESULTS The results from the voxel-based statistical analysis showed significantly lower GFA and NQA values in the breast cancer group than those in the control group. We found significant positive correlations between the FACT-Cog and GQI indices. In the graph theoretical analysis, the breast cancer group demonstrated significantly longer characteristic path length. Adjuvant chemotherapy affected the integrity of white matter and resulted in poor cognitive performance, as indicated by the correlations between the neuropsychological assessment scales and the GQI indices. In addition, it was found that the characteristic path lengths in the breast cancer group increased, indicating that the brain network integration became worse. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated alterations in structural brain networks and associated neuropsychological deficits among breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To address the estimated rates of incidence, potential underlying etiologies, and cognitive domains affected from diagnosis and treatment. To describe potential cognitive function interventions. DATA SOURCES PubMed. CONCLUSION Adults with gliomas report that the most distressing, persistent, and greatest negative impact on their lives relates to the cognitive impairment they experience. However, there are several potential interventions that may prevent cognitive decline during treatment or maintain cognitive function long term. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Awareness of cognitive sequela that adults with gliomas face can lead to early identification, full neurocognitive profiling, and implementation of evidence-based interventions for those experiencing cognitive impairments following cancer treatment.

Abstract
Purpose Patients with advanced cancer (ACPs) participating in phase I clinical trials inadequately understand many elements of informed consent (IC); however, the prevalence and impact of cognitive impairment has not been described. Patients and Methods ACPs enrolled onto phase I trials underwent neuropsychological assessment to evaluate cognitive functioning (CF) covering the following domains: memory (Hopkins Verbal Learning Test), executive functioning (Trail Making Test B), language (Boston Naming Test-Short Version and Controlled Oral Word Association Test), attention (Trail Making Test A and Wechsler Adult Intelligenence Scale-IV Digit Span), comprehension (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV), and quality of life (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function). Structured interviews evaluated IC and decisional capacity. Psychological measures included distress (Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale) and depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II). Results One hundred eighteen ACPs on phase I trials were evaluated, with CF ranging from mild impairment to superior performance. Only 45% of ACPs recalled physician disclosure of the phase I trial purpose. The 50% of ACPs who correctly identified the phase I research purpose had greater CF compared with ACPs who did not, as revealed by the mean T scores for memory (37.2 ± 5.6 v 32.5 ± 5.1, respectively; P = .001), attention (29 ± 2.7 v 26.9 ± 2.4, respectively; P < .001), visual attention (35.2 ± 6.6 v 31.5 ± 6.2, respectively; P = .001), and executive function (38.9 ± 7.5 v 34 ± 7.1, respectively; P < .001). Older ACPs (≥ 60 years) were less likely to recall physician disclosure of phase I purpose than younger ACPs (30% v 70%, respectively; P = .02) and had measurable deficits in total memory (34.2 ± 5.0 v 37.3 ± 5.6, respectively; P = .002), attention (24.5 ± 2.6 v 28 ± 2.8, respectively; P < .001), and executive function (32.8 ± 7.3 v 36.4 ± 7.6, respectively; P = .01). Older ACPs, compared with younger ACPs, also had greater depression scores (10.6 ± 9.2 v 8.1 ± 5.2, respectively; P = .03) and lower quality-of-life scores (152 ± 29.6 v 167 ± 20, respectively; P = .03). After adjustment by age, no psychological or neuropsychological variable was further significantly associated with likelihood of purpose identification. Conclusion CF seems to play a role in ACP recall and comprehension of IC for early-phase clinical trials, especially among older ACPs.

Abstract
Introduction: Both colon cancer and dementia are prevalent among the elderly and have a high risk of cooccurrence. Previous studies found that patients with dementia were treated less aggressively. In this study, we hypothesized that presence of preexisting dementia was associated with worse survival for stage III colon cancer patients, and that postoperative chemotherapy was on the causal pathway.Methods: We defined preexisting dementia in Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Medicare data through either a formal diagnosis or a prescription for dementia drugs or both before the diagnosis of cancer. We applied multivariable Cox regression to estimate the effect of preexisting dementia on survival, adjusting for demographic factors, tumor characteristics, and receipt of chemotherapy. We assessed mediating effects in the context of the counterfactual framework using the accelerated failure time model.Results: There were 4,573 patients diagnosed with stage III colon cancer between 2007 and 2009 identified. A preexisting diagnosis of dementia significantly increased the risk of death by 45% (HR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.29-1.63). Patients with either a formal diagnosis of dementia or a related prescription had significantly lower cause-specific survival than their cognitively healthy counterparts. Receipt of chemotherapy was a significant mediator on the causal pathway. The effect of presence of dementia was mediated by receipt of chemotherapy by 13% for preexisting dementia.Conclusions: Preexisting dementia is significantly associated with worse survival for stage III colon cancer patients, and its deleterious effect is partially explained by decreased likelihood of postoperative chemotherapy receipt.Impact: This is the first study that provides estimate of the mediating effect of diminished chemotherapy in patients with stage III colon cancer and dementia, simultaneously demonstrating the cancer-specific survival benefit of chemotherapy in the presence of dementia. Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Prognosis is poor, and therapeutic options are limited. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as potential therapeutic molecules against cancer. Here, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of miR-199a-3p, an miRNA highly expressed in normal liver and downregulated in virtually all HCCs. The therapeutic value of miR-199a-3p mimic molecules was assayed in the TG221 mouse, a transgenic model highly predisposed to the development of liver cancer. Administration of miR-199a-3p mimics in the TG221 transgenic mouse showing liver cancer led to a significant reduction of number and size of tumor nodules compared to control animals. In vivo delivery confirmed protein downregulation of the miR-199a-3p direct targets, mechanistic target of rapamycin (MTOR) and p21 activated kinase 4 (PAK4), ultimately leading to the repression of FOXM1. Remarkably, the anti-tumor activity of miR-199a-3p mimics was comparable to that obtained with sorafenib. These results suggested that miR-199a-3p may be considered a promising HCC therapeutic option.

Abstract
Objective This individual patient data (IPD) meta‐analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of psychosocial interventions (PSI) on quality of life (QoL), emotional function (EF), and social function (SF) in patients with cancer, and to study moderator effects of demographic, clinical, personal, and intervention‐related characteristics. Methods Relevant studies were identified via literature searches in 4 databases. We pooled IPD from 22 (n = 4217) of 61 eligible randomized controlled trials. Linear mixed‐effect model analyses were used to study intervention effects on the post‐intervention values of QoL, EF, and SF (z‐scores), adjusting for baseline values, age, and cancer type. We studied moderator effects by testing interactions with the intervention for demographic, clinical, personal, and intervention‐related characteristics, and conducted subsequent stratified analyses for significant moderator variables.Results: PSI significantly improved QoL (β = 0.14,95%CI = 0.06;0.21), EF (β = 0.13,95%CI = 0.05;0.20), and SF (β = 0.10,95%CI = 0.03;0.18). Significant differences in effects of different types of PSI were found, with largest effects of psychotherapy. The effects of coping skills training were moderated by age, treatment type, and targeted interventions. Effects of psychotherapy on EF may be moderated by cancer type, but these analyses were based on 2 randomized controlled trials with small sample sizes of some cancer types. Conclusions PSI significantly improved QoL, EF, and SF, with small overall effects. However, the effects differed by several demographic, clinical, personal, and intervention‐related characteristics. Our study highlights the beneficial effects of coping skills training in patients treated with chemotherapy, the importance of targeted interventions, and the need of developing interventions tailored to the specific needs of elderly patients.

Abstract
Purpose Cognitive impairment is well-recognized after myeloablative allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). However, cognitive functioning after reduced-intensity allogeneic or autologous HCT remains unclear. Methods A total of 477 HCT recipients (236 autologous, 128 reduced-intensity allogeneic, 113 myeloablative allogeneic) underwent standardized neuropsychologic testing before HCT and at 6 months and 1, 2, and 3 years after HCT. Ninety-nine frequency-matched healthy controls underwent testing at commensurate time points. Primary outcomes of the study were practice effect–adjusted domain-specific T scores and global deficit scores. Piecewise generalized estimating equation models were used to compare groups and to identify associated variables and post-HCT trends of cognitive impairment. Results Median age was 52 years (range, 18 to 74 years) for HCT recipients and 55 years (range, 19 to 73 years) for controls. Post-HCT scores were comparable between controls and autologous and reduced-intensity HCT recipients. Myeloablative HCT recipients had significantly lower ( P < .001) post-HCT scores than controls for executive function, verbal speed, processing speed, auditory memory, and fine motor dexterity. Pre-HCT to 6 months post-HCT scores did not change after reduced-intensity HCT but declined significantly for fine motor dexterity ( P < .001) after myeloablative HCT. However, pre-HCT to 3 years post-HCT scores declined significantly ( P < .003) in reduced-intensity HCT recipients for executive function, verbal fluency, and working memory. Older age, male sex, and lower education, income, and cognitive reserve were associated with post-HCT cognitive impairment. At 3 years post-HCT, global cognitive impairment was present in 18.7% of autologous and 35.7% of allogeneic HCT recipients. Conclusion Myeloablative allogeneic HCT recipients showed significant cognitive decline compared with healthy controls. Reduced-intensity allogeneic HCT recipients showed evidence of delayed decline. Cognitive functioning in autologous HCT recipients generally was spared. The study identified vulnerable subpopulations that could benefit from targeted interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) can have detrimental effects on quality of life, even among patients with non-central nervous system (CNS) cancers. Several studies have been conducted to explore different markers associated with CRCI to understand its pathobiology. It is proposed that the underlying mechanisms of CRCI are related to a cascade of physiological adaptive events in response to cancer and/or treatment. Hence, peripheral blood would be a logical source to observe and identify these physiological events. This paper outlines the protocol for a scoping review being conducted to summarise the extant literature regarding blood-based biomarkers of CRCI among patients with non-CNS cancer. METHODS/ANALYSIS Methods will be informed by the updated guidelines of Arksey and O'Malley. The systematic search for literature will include electronic databases, handsearching of key journals and reference lists, forward citation tracking and consultation with content experts. Study selection will be confirmed by duplicate review and calculation of inter-rater reliability. Data to be charted will include study design, sample size, cancer and treatment characteristics, demographic characteristics, cognitive variable/s and biomarkers assessed, associations between cognitive functioning and biomarkers (including statistics used), and rigour in biomarker sample collection and processing. Results will be presented through: (1) a descriptive numerical summary of studies, including a flow diagram based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement, (2) a list of blood-based biomarkers associated with CRCI and (3) a narrative overview developed through collaboration among the research team and consultation with content experts. DISSEMINATION The findings of this review will highlight current directions and gaps in the current body of evidence that may lead to improved rigour in future CRCI investigations. The dissemination of this work will be facilitated through the involvement of clinicians and researchers on the research team, an external consultation process and the presentation of the results through scholarly publication and presentation.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is highly prevalent, and assessment of cognition is crucial in providing optimal cancer care. Neuropsychological assessment (NPA) can be lengthy and expensive. Cognitive screening tools are plenty but validity has not been thoroughly studied for use in cancer patients. RECENT FINDINGS Our search of the recent literature revealed that the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Clock Draw Test were the most frequently studied objective screening tools. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function and the Cognitive Symptom Checklist-Work 21 were the most commonly studied subjective measures of perceived cognitive impairment. Evidence supports using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment or the Clock Draw Test over the Mini-Mental State Examination to screen for cognitive impairment within specific patient populations. In addition, adding a subjective measure of cognitive impairment (e.g., Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function) may increase diagnostic sensitivity. SUMMARY These suggest that cognitive screening tools may have a role in screening for CRCI, particularly when full NPA is not feasible. Researchers must continue to conduct high-quality studies to build an evidence to guide best practices in screening for CRCI.

Abstract
Approximately 3.1 million women in the US are living with breast cancer and up to 75% of these women experience cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). CRCI is described as impairments in memory, verbal fluency, thought processes, and attention span. Despite the high prevalence of breast cancer, only a few studies have been published on CRCI and most of these studies primarily focused on its pathophysiological mechanism. However, recent evidence has demonstrated that breast cancer patients with CRCI are more likely to have high level of psychologic distress, suggesting a possible relationship between CRCI and psychologic distress. This review aims to examine existing literature that describes CRCI in relation to psychological distress among breast cancer patients. One thousand four hundred and ninety-eight articles were searched using PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. Thirteen studies met inclusion criteria, and one article was additionally pulled from article reference lists. Of these19 studies, psychologic distress has been operationalized in varied ways such as anxiety (n = 3), depression (n = 2), both anxiety and depression (n = 4), stress (n = 4), worry (n = 2), mental fatigue (n = 1), and undefined psychological distress (n = 2). Except for six studies designed as a longitudinal study, the rest of studies used a cross-sectional design. Twelve studies used both subjective and objective measures to assess cognitive function. We found that the patients with high psychological distress displayed lower performance on cognitive function tests. Our finding indicates that psychological variables contributed to CRCI that breast cancer patients experienced. Areas for further investigation are proposed that will advance the care of breast cancer patients with CRCI.
