A network analysis of developmental change in ADHD symptom structure from preschool to adulthood

Although there is substantial support for the validity of the diagnosis of ADHD, there is considerable disagreement about how to best capture developmental changes in the expression of ADHD symptomatology. The current paper examines the associations among the 18 individual ADHD symptoms using a novel network analysis approach, from preschool to adulthood. The 1,420 participants were grouped into four age brackets: Preschool (age 3-6, n = 109), childhood (age 6-12, n = 548), adolescence (age 13-17, n = 357), and young adulthood (age 18-36, n = 406). All participants completed a multi-stage, multi-informant diagnostic process, and self and informant symptom ratings were obtained. Network analysis indicated ADHD symptom structure became more differentiated over development. Two symptoms Often easily distracted and Difficulty sustaining attention appeared as central, or core, symptoms across all age groups. Thus, a small number of core symptoms may warrant extra weighting in future diagnostic systems.

Development of the brain's functional network architecture

A full understanding of the development of the brain's functional network architecture requires not only an understanding of developmental changes in neural processing in individual brain regions but also an understanding of changes in inter-regional interactions. Resting state functional connectivity MRI (rs-fcMRI) is increasingly being used to study functional interactions between brain regions in both adults and children. We briefly review methods used to study functional interactions and networks with rs-fcMRI and how these methods have been used to define developmental changes in network functional connectivity. The developmental rs-fcMRI studies to date have found two general properties. First, regional interactions change from being predominately anatomically local in children to interactions spanning longer cortical distances in young adults. Second, this developmental change in functional connectivity occurs, in general, via mechanisms of segregation of local regions and integration of distant regions into disparate subnetworks.

Fetal Magnetoencephalography - Achievements and Challenges in the Study of Prenatal and Early Postnatal Brain Responses: A Review

Fetal magnetoencephalography (fMEG) is the only non-invasive method for investigating evoked brain responses and spontaneous brain activity generated by the fetus in utero. Fetal auditory as well as visual evoked fields have been successfully recorded in basic stimulus-response studies. Moreover, paradigms investigating precursors for cognitive development, such as habituation and mismatch response have been applied successfully with fMEG. These and other studies have shown that the prenatal stage of life could be an important indicator for later cognitive development. This review addresses the achievements of fMEG and constructively discusses its challenges. It concludes with proposals for future studies as well as with designated new applications. Fetal MEG is a promising, and to date it is the only non-invasive approach for the prenatal assessment of precursors for cognitive development. Future fMEG studies might even enable the diagnosis of developmental delays. Furthermore, fMEG could be critical for the implementation and evaluation of fetal intervention programs in at-risk populations.

Developmental differences in the neural bases of the face inversion effect show progressive tuning of face-selective regions to the upright orientation

Face inversion hinders face processing in adults, while not affecting children in the same way. This fMRI study examines the neural underpinnings of the behavioral face inversion effect (FIE) from childhood to adulthood, and how face-selective regions in the brain may change with development. Adults, children, and teens performed a facial expression decision on upright and inverted face stimuli. In the right hemisphere (RH) all age groups showed similar profiles of neural activation for upright faces, but important developmental differences occured for inverted faces. For inverted faces, adults, and to a lesser degree teens, exhibited decreased levels of activity in the face-selective, right lateral fusiform gyrus (LFG). However, children exhibited greater activation for inverted than for upright faces in the same region. We found similar, but less robust, developmental trends in the right superior temporal sulcus (STS) and medial fusiform gyrus (MFG). Furthermore, the present study identifies the right LFG as the primary neural correlate of the behavioral FIE, and therefore of face processing expertise, by showing a significant correlation between the behavioral FIE and the neural FIE only in this region. Finally, the present findings shed some light on at least one of the possible mechanisms underlying the development of face processing expertise, by suggesting a progressive tuning of face-selective regions in the right hemisphere to the upright orientation, that extends well into adolescence.

Brain activation during mental rotation in school children and adults

Mental rotation is a complex cognitive skill depending on the manipulation of mental representations. We aimed to investigate the maturing neuronal network for mental rotation by measuring brain activation in 20 children and 20 adults using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Our results indicate that brain activation patterns are very similar between children and adults. However, adults exhibit stronger activation in the left intraparietal sulcus compared to children. This finding suggests a shift of activation from a predominantly right parietal activation in children to a bilateral activation pattern in adults. Furthermore, adults show a deactivation of the posterior cingulate gyrus and precuneus, which is not observed in children. In conclusion, developmental changes of brain activation during mental rotation are leading to a bilateral parietal activation pattern and faster performance.

Cognition through the lifespan: mechanisms of change

Cognitive abilities rise steeply from infancy to young adulthood and then are either maintained or decline to old age, depending on the specific ability. This pattern suggests corresponding continuities of mechanism and process, but it is striking that the fields of cognitive development and cognitive aging make little contact with each other's methods and theories. In this review we examine reasons for this cultural separation, and show how recent findings from both areas fit a framework couched in terms of cognitive representation and control. These two broad factors have very different lifespan trajectories; consideration of their relative growth and decline makes it clear that cognitive aging is not simply 'development in reverse'. This framework is offered in light of recent interest in finding greater continuity throughout the lifespan and creating a more comprehensive explanation of cognitive function and cognitive change.

Brain–behavior relations across the lifespan: A commentary

This final article provides an overview and commentary on some of the methods, findings and interpretations discussed in the preceding papers. Some major commonalities among them are highlighted and possible questions for future research projects are suggested. Topics discussed include plasticity, compensation and dedifferentiation, representation and control, memory and learning-all considered under the general heading of brain-behavior relations, and how they change across the lifespan.

Breath holding reveals differences in fMRI BOLD signal in children and adults

Application of fMRI to studies of cognitive development is of growing interest because of its sensitivity and non-invasive nature. However, interpretation of fMRI results in children is presently based on vascular dynamics that have been studied primarily in healthy adults. Comparison of the neurological basis of cognitive development is valid to the extent that the neurovascular responsiveness between children and adults is equal. The present study was designed to detect age-related vascular differences that may contribute to altered BOLD fMRI signal responsiveness. We examined BOLD signal changes in response to breath holding, a global, systemic state change in brain oxygenation. Children exhibited greater percent signal changes than adults in grey and white matter, and this was accompanied by an increase in noise. Consequently, the volume of activation exceeding statistical threshold was reduced in children. The reduced activation in children was well modeled by adding noise to adult data. These findings raise the possibility that developmental differences in fMRI findings between children and adults could, under some circumstances, reflect greater noise in the BOLD response in the brains of children than adults. BOLD responses varied across brain regions, but showed similar regional variation in children and adults.
