Gap-directed chemical lift-off lithographic nanoarchitectonics for arbitrary sub-micrometer patterning

We introduce a unique soft lithographic operation that exploits stamp roof collapse-induced gaps to selectively remove an alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on Au to generate surface patterns that are orders of magnitude smaller than structures on the original elastomer stamp. The smallest achieved feature dimension is 5 nm using a micrometer-scale structured stamp in a chemical lift-off lithography (CLL) process. Molecular patterns retained in the gaps between stamp features and their circumscribed or inscribed circles follow mathematical predictions, and their sizes can be tuned by altering the stamp structure dimensions, including height, pitch, and shape. These generated surface molecular patterns can function as biorecognition arrays or be transferred to the underneath Au layer for metallic structure creation. By combining CLL process with this gap phenomenon, soft material properties that are previously thought as demerits can be used to achieve sub-10 nm features in a straightforward sketch.

Nanometer-scale patterning of hard and soft interfaces: from photolithography to molecular-scale design

Many areas of modern materials chemistry, from nanoscale electronics to regenerative medicine, require design of precisely-controlled chemical environments at near-molecular scales on both hard and soft surfaces.

There is still plenty of room for layer-by-layer assembly for constructing nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices

Nanoarchitectonics approaches can produce functional materials from tiny units through combination of various processes including atom/molecular manipulation, chemical conversion, self-assembly/self-organization, microfabrication, and bio-inspired procedures. Existing fabrication approaches can be regarded as fitting into the same concept. In particular, the so-called layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method has huge potential for preparing applicable materials with a great variety of assembling mechanisms. LbL assembly is a multistep process where different components can be organized in planned sequences while simple alignment options provide access to superstructures, for example helical structures, and anisotropies which are important aspects of nanoarchitectonics. In this article, newly-featured examples are extracted from the literature on LbL assembly discussing trends for composite functional materials according to (i) principles and techniques, (ii) composite materials, and (iii) applications. We present our opinion on the present trends, and the prospects of LbL assembly. While this method has already reached a certain maturity, there is still plenty of room for expanding its usefulness for the fabrication of nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices.

Nanoarchitectonics for Hierarchical Fullerene Nanomaterials

Nanoarchitectonics is a universal concept to fabricate functional materials from nanoscale building units. Based on this concept, fabrications of functional materials with hierarchical structural motifs from simple nano units of fullerenes (C60 and C70 molecules) are described in this review article. Because fullerenes can be regarded as simple and fundamental building blocks with mono-elemental and zero-dimensional natures, these demonstrations for hierarchical functional structures impress the high capability of the nanoarchitectonics approaches. In fact, various hierarchical structures such as cubes with nanorods, hole-in-cube assemblies, face-selectively etched assemblies, and microstructures with mesoporous frameworks are fabricated by easy fabrication protocols. The fabricated fullerene assemblies have been used for various applications including volatile organic compound sensing, microparticle catching, supercapacitors, and photoluminescence systems.

Effects of Fiber Stiffening to a Soft Actuator with PEDOT/PSS Electrode Films on Actuation Cycling Stability

In this work, we fabricated a fiber-stiffened soft actuator with PEDOT/PSS films as electrode. Embedding nylon fibers in the soft actuator successfully suppressed twisting deformations, resulting in a large and persistent actuation displacement. We evaluated the effects of the fiber spacing (1, 2, 3 and 4 mm) on the displacement and assessed the actuation displacement as a function of applied voltage (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 V) and frequency (0.2 and 1 Hz) with an actuation time of 500 s. We demonstrated that the fiberstiffened actuator with 2 mm fiber spacing exhibited steady actuation cycles (4.2 mm average displacement) in comparison with those with different spacings (1, 3, and 4 mm) and that without the fiber.

Nanoarchitectonics on living cells

In this review article, the recent examples of nanoarchitectonics on living cells are briefly explained. Not limited to conventional polymers, functional polymers, biomaterials, nanotubes, nanoparticles (conventional and magnetic ones), various inorganic substances, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and other advanced materials have been used as components for nanoarchitectonic decorations for living cells. Despite these artificial processes, the cells can remain active or remain in hibernation without being killed. In most cases, basic functions of the cells are preserved and their resistances against external assaults are much enhanced. The possibilities of nanoarchitectonics on living cells would be high, equal to functional modifications with conventional materials. Living cells can be regarded as highly functionalized objects and have indispensable contributions to future materials nanoarchitectonics.

Nanoarchitectonics: what's coming next after nanotechnology?

In science and technology today, the crucial importance of the regulation of nanoscale objects and structures is well recognized. The production of functional material systems using nanoscale units can be achieved via the fusion of nanotechnology with the other research disciplines. This task is a part of the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics, which is a concept moving beyond the area of nanotechnology. The concept of nanoarchitectonics is supposed to involve the architecting of functional materials using nanoscale units based on the principles of nanotechnology. In this focus article, the essences of nanotechnology and nanoarchitectonics are first explained, together with their historical backgrounds. Then, several examples of material production based on the concept of nanoarchitectonics are introduced via several approaches: (i) from atomic switches to neuromorphic networks; (ii) from atomic nanostructure control to environmental and energy applications; (iii) from interfacial processes to devices; and (iv) from biomolecular assemblies to life science. Finally, perspectives relating to the final goals of the nanoarchitectonics approach are discussed.

Controllable Design of Bifunctional VO2 Coatings with Superhydrophobic and Thermochromic Performances

The structure and functions of natural organisms provide great inspirational sources for designing and manufacturing bionic coatings, which hold a distinguished scientific promise to tackle challenges facing humans. In this work, we report a facile and controllable approach to prepare various hexagonal periodic array VO₂ thin films by simply manipulating the speed of the dip-coating operation. The hexagonal cellular-structured VO₂ surface delivered the best thermochromic performance with a T_lum of 79.34% and a ΔT_sol of 9.87%. Impressively, superhydrophobic and thermochromic properties could be integrated into hexagonal semi-dome thin films (with a T_lum of 70.9%, a ΔT_sol of 9.3%, and a water contact angle of 150°) without any post-treatment by low-surface-energy chemicals, which hold considerable potential for application in multifunctional smart windows. Moreover, based on the Cassie-Baxter mode and finite-difference time-domain calculations, the dependence of the thermochromic and wettability performances on the VO₂ structure has been investigated in this study.

Progress in Molecular Nanoarchitectonics and Materials Nanoarchitectonics

Although various synthetic methodologies including organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, and materials science are the main contributors to the production of functional materials, the importance of regulation of nanoscale structures for better performance has become clear with recent science and technology developments. Therefore, a new research paradigm to produce functional material systems from nanoscale units has to be created as an advancement of nanoscale science. This task is assigned to an emerging concept, nanoarchitectonics, which aims to produce functional materials and functional structures from nanoscale unit components. This can be done through combining nanotechnology with the other research fields such as organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and bio-related science. In this review article, the basic-level of nanoarchitectonics is first presented with atom/molecular-level structure formations and conversions from molecular units to functional materials. Then, two typical application-oriented nanoarchitectonics efforts in energy-oriented applications and bio-related applications are discussed. Finally, future directions of the molecular and materials nanoarchitectonics concepts for advancement of functional nanomaterials are briefly discussed.

Molecular recognition at the air-water interface: nanoarchitectonic design and physicochemical understanding

Although molecular recognition at the air-water interface has been researched for over 30 years, investigations on its fundamental aspects are still active research targets in current science. In this perspective article, developments and future possibilities of molecular recognition at the air-water interface from pioneering research efforts to current examples are overviewed especially from the physico-chemical viewpoints. Significant enhancements of binding constants for molecular recognition are actually observed at the air-water interface although molecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding are usually suppressed in aqueous media. Recent advanced analytical strategies for direct characterization of interfacial molecules also confirmed the promoted formation of hydrogen bonding at the air-water interfaces. Traditional quantum chemical approaches indicate that modulation of electronic distributions through effects from low-dielectric phases would be the origin of enhanced molecular interactions at the air-water interface. Further theoretical considerations suggest that unusual potential changes for enhanced molecular interactions are available only within a limited range from the interface. These results would be related with molecular recognition in biomolecular systems that is similarly supported by promoted molecular interactions in interfacial environments such as cell membranes, surfaces of protein interiors, and macromolecular interfaces.

Tuning Surface Morphology of Fluorescent Hydrogels Using a Vortex Fluidic Device

In recent decades, microfluidic techniques have been extensively used to advance hydrogel design and control the architectural features on the micro- and nanoscale. The major challenges with the microfluidic approach are clogging and limited architectural features: notably, the creation of the sphere, core-shell, and fibers. Implementation of batch production is almost impossible with the relatively lengthy time of production, which is another disadvantage. This minireview aims to introduce a new microfluidic platform, a vortex fluidic device (VFD), for one-step fabrication of hydrogels with different architectural features and properties. The application of a VFD in the fabrication of physically crosslinked hydrogels with different surface morphologies, the creation of fluorescent hydrogels with excellent photostability and fluorescence properties, and tuning of the structure-property relationship in hydrogels are discussed. We conceive, on the basis of this minireview, that future studies will provide new opportunities to develop hydrogel nanocomposites with superior properties for different biomedical and engineering applications.

Nanoarchitectonics beyond Self-Assembly: Challenges to Create Bio-Like Hierarchic Organization

Incorporation of non-equilibrium actions in the sequence of self-assembly processes would be an effective means to establish bio-like high functionality hierarchical assemblies. As a novel methodology beyond self-assembly, nanoarchitectonics, which has as its aim the fabrication of functional materials systems from nanoscopic units through the methodological fusion of nanotechnology with other scientific disciplines including organic synthesis, supramolecular chemistry, microfabrication, and bio-process, has been applied to this strategy. The application of non-equilibrium factors to conventional self-assembly processes is discussed on the basis of examples of directed assembly, Langmuir-Blodgett assembly, and layer-by-layer assembly. In particular, examples of the fabrication of hierarchical functional structures using bio-active components such as proteins or by the combination of bio-components and two-dimensional nanomaterials, are described. Methodologies described in this review article highlight possible approaches using the nanoarchitectonics concept beyond self-assembly for creation of bio-like higher functionalities and hierarchical structural organization.

Don't Forget Langmuir-Blodgett Films 2020: Interfacial Nanoarchitectonics with Molecules, Materials, and Living Objects

Designing interfacial structures with nanoscale (or molecular) components is one of the important tasks in the nanoarchitectonics concept. In particular, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method can become a promising and powerful strategy in interfacial nanoarchitectonics. From this viewpoint, the status of LB films in 2020 will be discussed in this feature article. After one section on the basics of interfacial nanoarchitectonics with the LB technique, various recent research examples of LB films are introduced according to classifications of (i) growing research, (ii) emerging research, and (iii) future research. In recent LB research, various materials other than traditional lipids and typical amphiphiles can be used as film components of the LB techniques. Two-dimensional materials, supramolecular structures such as metal organic frameworks, and biomaterials such as DNA origami pieces are capable of working as functional components in the LB assemblies. Possible working areas of the LB methods would cover emerging demands, including energy, environmental, and biomedical applications with a wide range of functional materials. In addition, forefront research such as molecular manipulation and cell fate control is conducted in LB-related interfacial science. The LB technique is a traditional and well-develop methodology for molecular films with a ca. 100 year history. However, there is plenty of room at the interfaces, as shown in LB research examples described in this feature article. It is hoped that the continuous development of the science and technology of the LB method make this technique an unforgettable methodology.

Fullerene Nanoarchitectonics with Shape-Shifting

This short review article introduces several examples of self-assembly-based structural formation and shape-shifting using very simple molecular units, fullerenes (C60, C70, and their derivatives), as fullerene nanoarchitectonics. Fullerene molecules are suitable units for the basic science of self-assembly because they are simple zero-dimensional objects with only a single elemental component, carbon, without any charged or interactive functional groups. In this review article, self-assembly of fullerene molecules and their shape-shifting are introduced as fullerene nanoarchitectonics. An outline and a background of fullerene nanoarchitectonics are first described, followed by various demonstrations, including fabrication of various fullerene nanostructures, such as rods on the cube, holes in the cube, interior channels in the cube, and fullerene micro-horns, and also a demonstration of a new concept, supramolecular differentiation.

Lipid Bicelle Micropatterning Using Chemical Lift-Off Lithography

Supported lipid membranes are versatile biomimetic coatings for the chemical functionalization of inorganic surfaces. Developing simple and effective fabrication strategies to form supported lipid membranes with micropatterned geometries is a long-standing challenge. Herein, we demonstrate how the combination of chemical lift-off lithography (CLL) and easily prepared lipid bicelle nanostructures can yield micropatterned, supported lipid membranes on gold surfaces with high pattern resolution, conformal character, and biofunctionality. Using CLL, we functionalized gold surfaces with patterned arrays of hydrophilic and hydrophobic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Time-lapse fluorescence microscopy imaging revealed that lipid bicelles adsorbed preferentially onto the hydrophilic SAM regions, while there was negligible lipid adsorption onto the hydrophobic SAM regions. Functional receptors could be embedded within the lipid bicelles, which facilitated selective detection of receptor-ligand binding interactions in a model streptavidin-biotin system. Quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation measurements further identified that lipid bicelles adsorb irreversibly and remain intact on top of the hydrophilic SAM regions. Taken together, our findings indicate that lipid bicelles are useful lipid nanostructures for reproducibly assembling micropatterned, supported lipid membranes with precise pattern fidelity.

Surface-Conformal Triboelectric Nanopores via Supramolecular Ternary Polymer Assembly

A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is of tremendous interest owing to its high energy efficiency with a simple device architecture and applicability to various materials. Most previous topological surface modifications introduced for further improving the performance of a TENG are detrimental because they require expensive and/or harsh (e.g., high temperature and acidity) postetching processes, which limit the material choice and design of its components. Herein, we demonstrate an one-step route for developing rapid wet-processable surface-conformal triboelectric nanoporous films (STENFs). Our method is based on a simple supramolecular assembly of a ternary polymer blend suitable for various conventional solution processes such as spin-, bar-, spray-, and dip-coating. The one-step wet process of a ternary solution produces thin large-area films in which self-assembled, ordered nanopores of approximately 33 nm in diameter are developed even without an additional etching process. The study reveals that the small amount of amine-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) added to the binary blend of sulfonic-acid-terminated poly(styrene) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) efficiently activates the formation of spontaneous nanopores as a pore-generating agent. Our STENF significantly enhances the open-circuit voltage up to 1.5 times higher than that of a planar one, leading to an improved power density of approximately 77 μW/cm². The suitability for diverse conventional coating processes offers a convenient approach for fabricating high-performance STENFs not only on flat substrates such as metals, polymers, and oxides but also on topological ones including wrinkled, roughened surfaces, textile fibers, natural leaves, and fabrics over a large area.
