Abstract
OBJECTIVES Preoperative diagnosis of oral ameloblastoma (AME) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) has been a challenge in dentistry. This study uses radiomics approaches and machine learning (ML) algorithms to characterize cone-beam CT (CBCT) image features for the preoperative differential diagnosis of AME and OKC and compares ML algorithms to expert radiologists to validate performance. METHODS We retrospectively collected the data of 326 patients with AME and OKC, where all diagnoses were confirmed by histopathologic tests. A total of 348 features were selected to train six ML models for differential diagnosis by a 5-fold cross-validation. We then compared the performance of ML-based diagnoses to those of radiologists. RESULTS Among the six ML models, XGBoost was effective in distinguishing AME and OKC in CBCT images, with its classification performance outperforming the other models. The mean precision, recall, accuracy, F1-score, and area under the curve (AUC) were 0.900, 0.807, 0.843, 0.841, and 0.872, respectively. Compared to the diagnostics by radiologists, ML-based radiomic diagnostics performed better. CONCLUSIONS Radiomic-based ML algorithms allow CBCT images of AME and OKC to be distinguished accurately, facilitating the preoperative differential diagnosis of AME and OKC. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE ML and radiomic approaches with high-resolution CBCT images provide new insights into the differential diagnosis of AME and OKC.

Abstract
Statement of the Problem Paxillin (PXN) is one of the proteins involved in cell adhesion. PXN and integrins constitute a key site for the focal adhesion between the cell and extracellular matrix. Several studies have shown that PXN is a factor in tumor formation, progression, invasion, and metastasis. Purpose This study evaluated PXN expression in four types of odontogenic lesions with different aggressive behaviors. Materials and Method In this retrospective cross-sectional study, PXN expression was immunohistochemically assessed in 68 paraffin-embedded tissue samples from patients with the confirmed diagnosis of four types of odontogenic lesions, including 14 dentigerous cysts (DC), 20 odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), 16 unicystic ameloblastoma, and 18 solid ameloblastoma. The PXN expression in these samples were scored based on the percentage and intensity of immunoreactivity, and compared among the groups by Chi-square test. Results The PXN marker was detected in the cytoplasm of tumor cells (unicystic and solid ameloblastoma) and the epithelial layer of cysts (DC and OKC). The intensively stained marker of PXN was observed in 9 cases (64.3%) of the DC, 14 cases (70%) of OKC, 12 cases (75%) of unicystic ameloblastoma, and 13 cases (72.2%) of solid ameloblastoma. However, there was not statistical difference of PXN protein expression between DC and OKC (p Value = 0.51) and unicystic and solid ameloblastoma (p = 0.58), also the same was true for cysts and tumors (p = 0.37). Conclusion The expression of PXN is not related to the biological behaviors of odontogenic lesions.

Abstract
Ameloblastoma is an epithelial odontogenic tumor with a benign nature and demonstrates local aggressiveness. It frequently occurs between the third and fifth decades of life, showing significant gender predilection. While typically displaying a benign growth pattern, it tends to invade and sporadically metastasize locally. Ameloblastoma is predominantly found in the posterior regions. Periodic recur commonly follows insufficient treatment. Hence, conducting thorough identification of tumors and management is crucial to prevent relapse. Complications and improved prognosis are associated with meticulous surgical techniques, regular follow-up care, and early detection of recurrence. This study presented a report of a 19-year-old male with swelling in the left lower jaw, detailing its area of complaint, radiographic findings, histopathologic characteristics, and different treatment approaches. The uniqueness of the case is the hybrid histopathology of ameloblastoma composed of plexiform and desmoplastic variants.

Abstract
Dentigerous cysts are known as the second most common type of cyst in the jaws. The cyst is one of the lesions occurred frequently in the posterior body of the mandible and is often related to the unerupted third molar and forms around the crown of the unerupted tooth attaching at the cementoenamel junction. Such characteristic appearances are the diagnostic points differentiating from ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst. However, it would be hard for us to diagnose it as a dentigerous cyst if the lesion does not show its typical appearance. We experienced two cases of dentigerous cysts which did not form around the crown of the unerupted tooth on radiologically. Both cysts were relatively large and resorbed adjacent teeth roots. Therefore, an ameloblastoma or an odontogenic keratocyst was suspected rather than a dentigerous cyst as the imaging diagnosis. The biopsy revealed that the lesion was a "dentigerous cyst" in one of the cases and "developmental cyst with inflammation" in another case. After the excision, the histopathological diagnosis was a dentigerous cyst with inflammation in both cases. This report shows the two cases of dentigerous cysts focusing on panoramic radiography and CT images. Also, we discuss the differential diagnosis by reconsidering those diagnostic points.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Studies directly relating radiological findings to the risk of postoperative wound infection (PWI) in impacted mandibular third molars (M3) are limited and poorly understood. This study aimed to clarify the radiological risk of PWI. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-six patients who developed PWI after M3 extraction were retrospectively analyzed using orthopantomography (OPG) and computed tomography (CT) before M3 extraction to determine the association between M3 impaction status and PWI. These were compared with an equal number of non-infected groups. Moreover, the possibility of assessing the same risk in OPG as in CT imaging was examined. RESULTS Multivariate analysis identified class III and position B of the Pell and Gregory classification system as independent risk factors for PWI. On CT, an axial overlap distance (AOD) >3.5 mm was significantly associated with PWI. Furthermore, the sagittal overlap distance (SOD) and AOD of the OPG were significantly greater in group III-B. A strong positive correlation was observed between SOD and AOD. CONCLUSION These results indicate that class III, position B, and an AOD >3.5 mm may be novel risk factors for M3 PWI. The strong correlation between SOD and AOD suggests that the risk assessment for PWI can be performed by evaluating OPG alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ameloblastoma, a common benign tumor found in the jaw bone, necessitates accurate localization and segmentation for effective diagnosis and treatment. However, the traditional manual segmentation method is plagued with inefficiencies and drawbacks. Hence, the implementation of an AI-based automatic segmentation approach is crucial to enhance clinical diagnosis and treatment procedures. METHODS We collected CT images from 79 patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma and employed a deep learning neural network model for training and testing purposes. Specifically, we utilized the Mask R-CNN neural network structure and implemented image preprocessing and enhancement techniques. During the testing phase, cross-validation methods were employed for evaluation, and the experimental results were verified using an external validation set. Finally, we obtained an additional dataset comprising 200 CT images of ameloblastoma from a different dental center to evaluate the model's generalization performance. RESULTS During extensive testing and evaluation, our model successfully demonstrated the capability to automatically segment ameloblastoma. The DICE index achieved an impressive value of 0.874. Moreover, when the IoU threshold ranged from 0.5 to 0.95, the model's AP was 0.741. For a specific IoU threshold of 0.5, the model achieved an AP of 0.914, and for another IoU threshold of 0.75, the AP was 0.826. Our validation using external data confirms the model's strong generalization performance. CONCLUSION In this study, we successfully applied a neural network model based on deep learning that effectively performs automatic segmentation of ameloblastoma. The proposed method offers notable advantages in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and speed, rendering it a promising tool for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Aim of this study was to demonstrate the diagnostic ability to differentiate odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) from ameloblastomas (AMs) based on computed tomography (CT) or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Preoperative CT and CBCT scans from 2004 to 2019 of OKCs and AMs were analyzed in 51 participants. Lesions were three-dimensionally (3D) assessed and Hounsfield units (HU) as well as gray scale values (GSV) were quantified. Calculated HU spectra were compared within the same imaging modalities using unpaired t-tests and correlated with participants characteristics by calculating Pearsons correlation coefficients. Within the CT scans, AMs had highly significantly higher HU values compared to OKCs (43.52 HU and 19.79 HU, respectively; p < 0.0001). Analogous, within the CBCT scans, AMs had significantly higher GSV compared to OKCs (-413.76 HU and -564.76 HU, respectively; p = 0.0376). These findings were independent from participants' gender and age, anatomical site, and lesion size, indicating that the HU- and GSV-based difference reflects an individual configuration of the lesion. HU and GSV spectra calculated from CT and CBCT scans can be used to discriminate between OKCs and AMs. This diagnostic approach represents a faster and non-invasive option for preoperative diagnosis of such entities and has potential to facilitate therapeutic decision making.

Abstract
There is a broad spectrum of pathology that occurs in the oral cavity. Knowledge of the different anatomic subsites and contents of each is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Oral cavity tumors are predominantly malignant in nature, but there are many nonmalignant lesions of which the practicing clinician should be aware. This article will discuss the anatomy, imaging approaches, and imaging characteristics of nonmalignant and malignant pathology in the oral cavity.

Abstract
In 2017, the World Health Organization classified the odontogenic keratocyst as a developmental odontogenic cyst. The posterior parts of the mandible, especially the angle and the ramus, are the most involved sites. Due to their high recurrence rate, keratocysts are managed surgically with careful complete excision. Additionally, chemical solutions such as Carnoy's solution, modified Carnoy's solution, and 5-Fluorouracil have been associated with surgical treatment. Diode lasers generate diverse wavelengths that have photothermal and photochemical special properties and could have some effects on the lining epithelium remnants of the cyst. In this paper, we discuss a case of mandibular recurrent odontogenic keratocyst treated with 5-Fluorouracil topical application after enucleation and diode laser application with 18 years follow-up and teeth replacement with dental implant. 5-Fluorouracil and diode laser have been found to be very effective in the treatment of keratocysts.

Abstract
Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) is an odontogenic cyst of developmental origin arising from remnants of the dental lamina. Malignant or benign transformations though rare have been noticed from their epithelium. Ameloblastomatous transformation from an OKC is extremely rare with such lesions being referred to as combined/"hybrid" odontogenic lesions. In this article, we present an intriguing case of a 60-year-old male who was operated on for OKC of the anterior mandible 3 years before, who came back with a complaint of swelling over the same site. Incisional biopsy revealed the acanthomatous type of ameloblastoma for which segmental resection with immediate reconstruction using recon plate was done. Excision biopsy revealed a plexiform variant as well, thus exhibiting a hybrid pattern. Surgeons should be aware of this hybrid presentation of ameloblastoma arising from the epithelium of OKC as the acanthomatous subtype is known for its notorious genetic behavior leading to recurrence and aggressive nature of this tumor.

Abstract
The differentiation between ameloblastoma (AB) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is essential for the formulation of the surgical plan, especially considering the biological behavior of these two pathological entities. Therefore, developing means to increase the accuracy of the diagnostic process is extremely important for a safe treatment. The aim of this study was to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on texture analysis (TA) as an aid in differentiating AB from OKC. This study comprised 18 patients; eight patients with AB and ten with OKC. All diagnoses were determined through incisional biopsy and later through histological examination of the surgical specimen. MRI was performed using a 3 T scanner with a neurovascular coil according to a specific protocol. All images were exported to segmentation software in which the volume of interest (VOI) was determined by a radiologist, who was blind to the histopathological results. Next, the textural parameters were computed by using the MATLAB software. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to assess the correlation between texture parameters and the selected variables. Differences in TA parameters were compared between AB and OKC by using the Mann-Whitney test. Mann-Whitney test showed a statistically significant difference between AB and OKC for the parameters entropy (P = 0.033) and sum average (P = 0.033). MRI texture analysis has the potential to discriminate between AB and OKC as a noninvasive method. MRI texture analysis can be an additional tool to differentiate ameloblastoma from odontogenic keratocyst.

Abstract
Ameloblastoma is a benign odontogenic tumor characterized by slow growth causing painless facial swelling. The tumor can behave locally aggressively, and may have direct destructive effects on the surrounding soft and hard tissues. This paper reports the unique case of a female patient with giant ameloblastoma of the mandible. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an enormous swelling of the left side of the face, resorption of the affected hemi-mandible, left maxilla, and tissues of the temporal, infratemporal, and pterygopalatine fossae. Pressure from the tumor resulted in displacement and destruction of the facial skeleton, upper aero-digestive tract structures, and some structures of the neck. The patient was treated by radical hemimandibulectomy with removal of the tumorous mass. Precise knowledge of the anatomical structures, and their locations and topographical relationships is required in the diagnosis and treatment plan for each surgical procedure in cases of giant ameloblastoma. CT imaging can be used to determine the extent and exact location of the lesion, revealing other important details that may help in selecting appropriate treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the present article was to review and depict the main radiological features of odontogenic keratocysts, thus helping the differential diagnoses from other odontogenic cysts and neoplasms. METHODS A review of articles published between January 2000 and October 2020 using Medline and the MeSH Term "odontogenic keratocyst" in combination with the following terms 'imaging,' 'radiology,' 'panoramic radiograph,' and 'computed tomography,' was performed. RESULTS Radiographically, OKCs are well-defined unilocular or multilocular radiolucencies bounded by corticated margins. Most lesions are unilocular; instead, multilocular OKCs represent about the 30% of cases, mainly involving the posterior mandible. When, particularly in large lesions, OKCs display a multilocular presentation with adjacent satellite cysts (daughter cysts) a "soap-bubble appearance" can be recognized. CONCLUSIONS Panoramic radiograph and CT still play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment planning of OKCs. Unfortunately, it may not be easy to differentiate OKCs from other odontogenic lesions, especially when they are small and unilocular. Histopathological findings are still necessary to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse the automatic classification performance of a convolutional neural network (CNN), Google Inception v3, using tomographic images of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and ameloblastomas (AMs). METHODS For construction of the database, we selected axial multidetector CT images from patients with confirmed AM (n = 22) and OKC (n = 18) based on a conclusive histopathological report. The images (n = 350) were segmented manually and data augmentation algorithms were applied, totalling 2500 images. The k-fold × five cross-validation method (k = 2) was used to estimate the accuracy of the CNN model. RESULTS The accuracy and standard deviation (%) of cross-validation for the five iterations performed were 90.16 ± 0.95, 91.37 ± 0.57, 91.62 ± 0.19, 92.48 ± 0.16 and 91.21 ± 0.87, respectively. A higher error rate was observed for the classification of AM images. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated a high classification accuracy of Google Inception v3 for tomographic images of OKCs and AMs. However, AMs images presented the higher error rate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to demonstrate the clinical, radiologic, and histologic features of orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC); determine the characteristics of multiple OOCs; and present rare but significant manifestations of OOC. STUDY DESIGN A clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic study of 65 primary and 2 recurrent OOC cases was performed retrospectively along with a comprehensive literature review. RESULTS OOCs shared similar radiologic findings with odontogenic keratocyst, yet some showed features that have not been previously described: root resorption and radiopaque foci. Histologic review revealed a unique histiocytic lining and some findings suggestive of the multipotentiality of the odontogenic epithelium. The analysis of patients with multiple OOCs demonstrated that multiple OOCs occurred synchronously with a marked predilection for young male adults. Two unusual cases were also identified: an OOC combined with a BRAFV600E ameloblastoma and a recurrent OOC with malignant transformation. CONCLUSIONS This largest series presents previously unreported radiographic and histopathologic features that can be seen in OOC. Multiple OOCs have clinical characteristics distinct from those of solitary cases. The first reported OOC associated with ameloblastoma suggests the involvement of oncogenic mutations in odontogenic tumorigenesis. Although OOC shows a low recurrence rate, the possibility of malignant transformation of recurrent OOCs should be emphasized.

Abstract
Purpose The differentiation of the ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst directly affects the formulation of surgical plans, while the results of differential diagnosis by imaging alone are not satisfactory. This paper aimed to propose an algorithm based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) structure to significantly improve the classification accuracy of these two tumors. Methods A total of 420 digital panoramic radiographs provided by 401 patients were acquired from the Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital. Each of them was cropped to a patch as a region of interest by radiologists. Furthermore, inverse logarithm transformation and histogram equalization were employed to increase the contrast of the region of interest (ROI). To alleviate overfitting, random rotation and flip transform as data augmentation algorithms were adopted to the training dataset. We provided a CNN structure based on a transfer learning algorithm, which consists of two branches in parallel. The output of the network is a two-dimensional vector representing the predicted scores of ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst, respectively. Results The proposed network achieved an accuracy of 90.36% (AUC = 0.946), while sensitivity and specificity were 92.88% and 87.80%, respectively. Two other networks named VGG-19 and ResNet-50 and a network trained from scratch were also used in the experiment, which achieved accuracy of 80.72%, 78.31%, and 69.88%, respectively. Conclusions We proposed an algorithm that significantly improves the differential diagnosis accuracy of ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst and has the utility to provide a reliable recommendation to the oral maxillofacial specialists before surgery.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of the width-to-length ratio for the differentiation of ameloblastomas and odontogenic keratocysts in the body of the mandible. Materials and Methods This study retrospectively reviewed 9 patients with ameloblastomas and 9 patients with odontogenic keratocysts using cone-beam computed tomography. The width-to-length ratio was determined by measuring the ratio between the greatest buccolingual dimension and the greatest perpendicular anteroposterior dimension of the lesion on the axial view. One-way analysis of variance was used to examine the difference in the width-to-length ratio between the 2 types of lesions. Statistical significance was tested at P<0.05. Results Ameloblastomas showed a mean width-to-length ratio of 0.64, whereas odontogenic keratocysts showed a mean width-to-length ratio of 0.41. The cut-off value with which the 2 types of lesions were differentiated was 0.5. The width-to-length ratios of ameloblastomas were significantly higher than those of odontogenic keratocysts (P<0.05). Conclusion The width-to-length ratio might be used to differentiate between ameloblastomas and odontogenic keratocysts.

Abstract
Summary
Background/Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the imaging characteristics of common, radiolucent, unilocular, intraosseous lesions of the jaws using both panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT); also, to evaluate sufficiency of panoramic radiography in determining characteristic features of jaw lesions.
Material and Methods: Retrospectively selected images of 57 patients with histopathology results were evaluated by two oral radiologists. The lesions were assessed based on shape, location, borders, relationship with the mandibular canal, presence of destruction of cortical bone, and expansion of cortical bone, and presence of an unerupted tooth related to the lesion. In addition, the widest areas of the lesions were measured. A total of 9 (15.8%) odontogenic keratocysts, 9 (15.8%) apical granulomas, 24 (42.1%) radicular cysts, 12 (21.0%) dentigerous cysts and 3 (5.2%) central giant cell granulomas in 57 patients (20 women, 37 men) with a mean age of 36.93 ± 17.96 years were included. Fifty-seven CBCT and 56 panoramic images of these patients were evaluated.
Results: Twenty-nine (50.8%) lesions were in the mandible and 28 (49.2%) in the maxilla. A statistically significant difference was determined for the areas in CBCT images (p=0.007).
Conclusions: Panoramic radiography is not as successful as CBCT in demonstrating some characteristics of the lesions, such as expansion and destruction. The area measurements may be beneficial in establishing the differential diagnosis of the lesion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the differences in imaging characteristics and the diagnostic accuracy of 225 intraosseous jaw lesions on panoramic radiographs (PAN) versus cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS 225 sets of PAN and CBCT images with biopsy-proven histopathological diagnoses were retrospectively compared in terms of radiographic features and diagnostic accuracy. The imaging characteristics of PAN and CBCT were independently evaluated by two oral and maxillofacial radiologists who were required to answer 12 questions and provided up to three differential diagnoses with their confidence scores. RESULTS Odds ratios (ORs) were statistically significant for border cortication (OR = 1.521; p = .003) and border continuity (OR = 0.421; p = .001), involvement on neurovascular canals (OR = 2.424; p < .001), expansion (OR = 7.948; p < .001), cortical thinning (OR = 20.480; p < .001) as well as its destruction (OR = 25.022; p < .001) and root resorption (OR = 2.477; p < .001). Furthermore, imaging features in the posterior and mandibular regions showed better agreement than those in the anterior and maxillary regions, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of the first differential diagnosis was higher on CBCT than on PAN (Observer 1:78.7 vs 64.4%; Observer 2: 78.7 vs 70.2% (p < .001)). The observers' confidence scores were also higher at CBCT interpretation compared with PAN. CONCLUSIONS CBCT demonstrated a greater number of imaging characteristics of intraosseous jaw lesions compared with PAN, especially in the anterior regions of both jaws and in the maxilla. Diagnostic accuracy is improved with CBCT compared to PAN, especially for lesions in the maxilla. Radiologists have greater confidence when using CBCT.

Abstract
We present the frequency of cases of isolated odontogenic keratocysts submitted to microscopic examination at 10 Brazilian referral centres in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. In a retrospective (1953-2017) analysis, data on clinicoradiographic features and treatment of these lesions were collected and analysed descriptively. Among the 258,867 cases retrieved, 2,497 (0.96%) were isolated odontogenic keratocysts. In summary, an overview of individuals affected with isolated odontogenic keratocysts is reported herein. This lesion showed predilection for the posterior mandible of young adult men.

Odontogenic keratocyst and ameloblastoma: radiographic evaluation. Oral Radiol 2020; 37:55-65. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the radiographic features of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and ameloblastomas and to compare the radiographic findings between these 2 lesions. METHODS Radiographs of OKCs and ameloblastomas were retrospectively reviewed. Location, border, shape, association with impacted tooth, tooth displacement, root resorption, and bone expansion were evaluated. Chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests were used for statistical analysis. A p value < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS One hundred OKCs and 101 ameloblastomas were reviewed. The ratios of maxilla to mandible were 1:1.4 and 1:9.1 in OKCs and ameloblastomas, respectively. All evaluated features significantly differed between OKCs and ameloblastomas (p ≤ 0.001). Most OKCs showed smooth border (60%) and unilocular shape (82%), while most ameloblastomas showed scalloped border (77.2%) and multilocular shape (68.3%). Association with impacted tooth was found in 47% of OKCs and 18.8% of ameloblastomas. Adjacent tooth displacement was found in 33.7% of OKCs and 55.8% of ameloblastomas. Root resorption was more common in ameloblastomas (66.7%) than in OKCs (7%). Bone expansion was also more common in ameloblastomas (96.3%) than in OKCs (63.6%). CONCLUSION A unilocular radiolucent lesion with smooth border, no adjacent tooth displacement, no root resorption and causing mild or no bone expansion is suggestive of an OKC rather than an ameloblastoma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adenoid ameloblastoma is a rare benign odontogenic tumor that favors a slight predilection for male patients, fourth and fifth decades of life, and posterior regions of the jaws. To date, less than 40 cases have been reported in the English language literature. The radiographic aspects of adenoid ameloblastoma vary from unilocular and well-defined lesions to diffuse and multilocular lesions. Most of the lesions exhibit a radiolucent image and are usually large, with a mean size of 3.5 cm. Microscopically, pseudoductal structures composed of columnar cells in a palisaded arrangement formed from the parenchyma of the tumor were observed. CASE PRESENTATION We describe a case of adenoid ameloblastoma in a 54-year-old woman, who presented with no symptoms. Panoramic radiography showed a well-circumscribed, unilocular radiolucency in the left posterior maxilla. CONCLUSION As odontogenic tumors are rare, some entities are infrequently encountered, making the diagnosis more difficult. Clinicians, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and oral pathologists should be familiar with the adenoid ameloblastoma and its differential diagnosis for accurate diagnosis and management.

Abstract
Background: There are several lesions of odontogenic and non-odontogenic origin in the oral cavity, such as odontogenic keratocyst, as well as many treatment options for such lesions. In order to reduce recurrence due to conservative treatments and less aesthetic and functional impairment of the patient (radical therapies), Carnoy’s solution has been used as an adjuvant to surgery, showing satisfactory results. Its application is not standardized, presenting risks to adjacent tissues. Thus, we characterized the Carnoy’s solution with different viscosity agents to enhance its applicability. Material and Methods: All solutions prepared (Carnoy with and without chloroform) were added with viscosity agent: ethyl cellulose, propylene glycol, and glycerol totaling eight solutions. The pharmacological characterization of the solutions was performed by determining the mass density and relative density (using a clean and dry pycnometer), pH (using pH meter), and concentration of Fe3+ (using ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy). The analyses of the inorganic components were determined by Raman micro spectrometry. Data were analyzed with statistical program BIOESTAT 5.3. Results: Solutions with ethyl cellulose were discarded due to precipitate formation and suspension of the viscosity agent. In the other solutions, viscosity increase (propylene glycol solutions) and acidic pH were observed mainly in the glycerol group. The ferric chloride characterized as a hemostatic agent had its concentration increased with the use of thickening agents, theoretically favoring its action. Conclusion: The similarity of the propylene glycol and glycerol molecules justifies the Raman spectra of these substances to be similar and the difficulty in obtaining a “fingerprint”.

Abstract
Knife-edge or blunt root resorptions characterize ameloblastomas and are pathognomonic for this tumor, because they differentiate ameloblastomas from simple bone cysts, odontogenic keratocysts and nasopalatine duct cysts, which do not lead to resorption of involved teeth. Despite the very high frequency and importance of these characteristics for a differential diagnosis, a microscopic examination should also be conducted before defining the diagnosis and the treatment plan for these cases. This paper describes a six-step hypothesis to explain the mechanism by which ameloblastomas promote the characteristic root resorptions found in association with these benign epithelial tumors, which have a fibrous capsule formed by islands and epithelial cords that mimic the dental lamina, invade neighboring tissues and release mediators (IL-1, EGF) of tooth and root resorption. This hypothesis may be one more explanation for the tooth resorptions sometimes found in orthodontic records, and may help differentiate the root resorptions that are specific to the orthodontic practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the specific growth rate (SGR) of ameloblastoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS cases of ameloblastoma initially underdiagnosed (e.g. cases overlooked or diagnosed as reactive lesions) which had adequate radiographic documentation to evaluate their progression were retrospectively selected. Two panoramic radiographs were analyzed to determine the specific growth rate (SGR) of each tumor, defined as the logarithm of the ratio of final tumor area (when the diagnosis of ameloblastoma was made) to the initial tumor area (when the lesion was underdiagnosed), divided by the time interval between the radiographic images. The tumor area was measured using the software ImageJ. RESULTS Twelve patients with mandibular ameloblastomas were selected, including 5 males and 7 females, with a mean age of 24.9 years (range: 14-61 years). In four cases, the lesion was associated with the crown of an impacted third molar. In three cases, it was initially diagnosed as a periapical lesion. Three cases were extrafollicular and were not noticed in the initial radiographs. Two cases were initially diagnosed as ameloblastoma, but the surgery was delayed for personal reasons. The mean interval of time between the two radiographic images was 4.3 years (range: 0.4-9 years). Based on our analysis, ameloblastoma grows in average 40.4% per year (range: 14.9-88.7%). CONCLUSIONS Ameloblastoma is a progressively growing tumor, but its growth rate seems to be smaller than initially reported in the literature. Better understanding the radiographic progression of ameloblastoma might improve its early diagnosis, management, and prognosis.

Abstract
Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally invasive odontogenic tumor that causes significant morbidity. The aim is to study an ameloblastoma treatment with reconstruction using titanium plates adapted using stereolithographic models. A 48-year-old female patient referred due to asymptomatic osteolytic lesion between teeth 47 and 48 discovered during routine radiographic study. The pathoanatomical study described a desmoplastic ameloblastoma. Due to the possibility of it being a malignant lesion, a computerized axial tomography scan was performed, which showed that the tumor was not malignant. A stereolithographic model was prepared to make the cutting guides and facilitate fitting of reconstruction plates. Three-dimensional printing technology enables fast, accurate mandibular reconstruction, helping to shorten operation time.
