Characterization of indoor particle sources: A study conducted in the metropolitan Boston area

Indoor Emissions Contributed the Majority of Ultrafine Particles in Chinese Urban Residences

Ultrafine particle (UFP) pollution should be controlled to reduce its effects on health. The design of control measures is limited owing to the uncertainty of source contributions in Chinese residences, where indoor UFP pollution is more severe than in Western residences. Herein, a source-specific, time-dependent UFP concentration model was developed by applying an infiltration factor model incorporating coagulation effects. A Monte Carlo framework with the UFP concentration model was employed to estimate the probabilistic distribution of source contributions in Chinese residences. The input parameter distributions were determined based on our survey and previous studies. The annually averaged indoor UFP concentration was estimated at (2.75 ± 1.71) × 104 #/cm3, ranging from 2.35 × 103 to 1.27 × 105 #/cm3 outside the kitchen, and at (5.48 ± 3.08) × 104 #/cm3, ranging from 2.90 × 103 to 1.94 × 105 #/cm3 in the kitchen. Indoor sources contributed more to indoor UFPs, accounting for 61% in the nonkitchen and 80% in the kitchen, surpassing their contribution to indoor PM2.5 in Chinese residences. Meanwhile, the indoor UFP emission contributions were higher than those in the United States, Canada, and Germany, owing to higher emissions from cooking and cigarette smoking. These results will aid in elucidating human exposure to UFPs and in designing more targeted control measures.

Contribution of Particulates to Airborne Disease Transmission and Severity: A Review

The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has catalyzed great interest in the spread of airborne pathogens. Airborne infectious diseases are classified into viral, bacterial, and fungal infections. Environmental factors can elevate their transmission and lethality. Air pollution has been reported as the leading environmental cause of disease and premature death worldwide. Notably, ambient particulates of various components and sizes are harmful pollutants. There are two prominent health effects of particles in the atmosphere: (1) particulate matter (PM) penetrates the respiratory tract and adversely affects health, such as heart and respiratory diseases; and (2) bioaerosols of particles act as a medium for the spread of pathogens in the air. Particulates contribute to the occurrence of infectious diseases by increasing vulnerability to infection through inhalation and spreading disease through interactions with airborne pathogens. Here, we focus on the synergistic effects of airborne particulates on infectious disease. We outline the concepts and characteristics of bioaerosols, from their generation to transformation and circulation on Earth. Considering that microorganisms coexist with other particulates as bioaerosols, we investigate studies examining respiratory infections associated with airborne PM. Furthermore, we discuss four factors (meteorological, biological, physical, and chemical) that may impact the influence of PM on the survival of contagious pathogens in the atmosphere. Our review highlights the significant role of particulates in supporting the transmission of infectious aerosols and emphasizes the need for further research in this area.

Particulate Matter and Volatile Organic Compound Emissions Generated from a Domestic Air Fryer

Air frying has become a popular cooking method for domestic cooking, but the level of released indoor air pollutants is poorly understood. In this work, we compared particle and gas phase emission factors (EF) and particle size distributions between cooking with a domestic air fryer and a pan for a variety of foods. The PM10 EFs of air frying chicken wings and breast were higher than pan cooking by a factor of 2.1 and 5.4, respectively. On the other hand, a higher PM10 emission factor from air frying can be achieved by increasing the amount of oil to levels similar to or above those from pan-frying for French fries and asparagus. We propose that higher temperature and greater turbulence lead to higher PM10 EFs for cooking with the air fryer compared with the pan for the same mass of oil added. EFs of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also generally higher for cooking with the air fryer compared with the pan: 2.5 times higher for French fries and 4.8 times higher for chicken breast. Our study highlights the potential risk of higher indoor PM10 levels associated with domestic air frying under certain cases and proposes possible mitigation measures.

Toxicological and Mutagenic Effects of Particulate Matter from Domestic Activities

People spend most of their time indoors, particularly in their houses where daily activities are carried out, enhancing particulate matter (PM) emissions with consequent adverse health impacts. This study intended to appraise the toxicological and mutagenic responses of particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 μm (PM₁₀) released from cooking and ironing activities under different conditions. The cytotoxicity of the PM₁₀ total organic extracts was tested in A549 cells using the WST-8 and the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, while the interference in cell cycle dynamics and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was analysed by flow cytometry. The S. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 Ames tester strains with and without metabolic activation were employed to determine the mutagenic potential of the PM₁₀-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PM₁₀ organic extracts decreased the metabolic activity of A549 cells; however, no effects in the LDH release were observed. An increase in ROS levels was registered only for cells treated with PM₁₀ at IC₂₀ from steam ironing, in low ventilation conditions, while cell cycle dynamics was only affected by exposure to PM₁₀ at IC₂₀ from frying horse mackerel and grilling boneless pork strips. No mutagenic effects were observed for all the PM₁₀-bound PAHs samples.

Understanding population exposure to size-segregated aerosol and associated trace elements during residential cooking in northeastern India: Implications for disease burden and health risk

Mass-size distribution of respirable aerosol and 13 associated trace elements (TEs) were investigated in rural kitchens using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), firewood and mixed biomass fuels across three northeastern Indian states. The averaged PM10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm) and ΣTE concentrations were 403 and 30 μg m-3 for LPG, 2429 and 55 μg m-3 for firewood, and 1024 and 44 μg m-3 for mixed biomass-using kitchens. Mass-size distributions were tri-modal with peaks in the ultrafine (0.05-0.08 μm), accumulation (0.20-1.05 μm), and coarse (3.20-4.57 μm) modes. Respiratory deposition, estimated using the multiple path particle dosimetry model, ranged from 21 % to 58 % of the total concentration across fuel types and population age categories. Head, followed by pulmonary and tracheobronchial, was the most vulnerable deposition region, and children were the most susceptible age group. Inhalation risk assessment of TEs revealed significant non-carcinogenic as well as carcinogenic risk, especially for biomass fuel users. The potential years of life lost (PYLL) was the highest for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD: 15.9 ± 3.8 years) followed by lung cancer (10.3 ± 0.3 years) and pneumonia (10.1 ± 0.1 years), while the PYLL rate was also highest for COPD, with Cr(VI) being the major contributor. Overall, these findings reveal the significant health burden faced by the northeastern Indian population from indoor cooking using solid biomass fuels.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from non-tobacco sources in homes within high-income countries: a systematic review

The health impacts associated with exposure to elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) are well recognised. There is a substantial number of studies characterising PM_2.5 concentrations outdoors, as well as in homes within low- and middle-income countries. In high-income countries (HICs), there is a sizeable literature on indoor PM_2.5 relating to smoking, but the evidence on exposure to PM_2.5 generated from non-tobacco sources in homes is sparse. This is especially relevant as people living in HICs spend the majority of their time at home, and in the northern hemisphere households often have low air exchange rates for energy efficiency. This review identified 49 studies that described indoor PM_2.5 concentrations generated from a variety of common household sources in real-life home settings in HICs. These included wood/solid fuel burning appliances, cooking, candles, incense, cleaning and humidifiers. The reported concentrations varied widely, both between sources and within groups of the same source. The burning of solid fuels was found to generate the highest indoor PM_2.5 concentrations. On occasion, other sources were also reported to be responsible for high PM_2.5 concentrations; however, this was only in a few select examples. This review also highlights the many inconsistencies in the ways data are collected and reported. The variable methods of measurement and reporting make comparison and interpretation of data difficult. There is a need for standardisation of methods and agreed contextual data to make household PM_2.5 data more useful in epidemiological studies and aid comparison of the impact of different interventions and policies.

Outdoor and indoor fine particulate matter at skilled nursing facilities in the western United States during wildfire and non-wildfire seasons

Wildfire activity is increasing in parts of the world where extreme drought and warming temperatures contribute to fireprone conditions, including the western United States. The elderly are among the most vulnerable, and those in long-term care with preexisting conditions have added risk for adverse health outcomes from wildfire smoke exposure. In this study, we report continuous co-located indoor and outdoor fine particulate matter (PM_2.5 ) measurements at four skilled nursing facilities in the western United States. Throughout the year 2020, over 8000 h of data were collected, which amounted to approximately 300 days of indoor and outdoor sampling at each facility. The highest indoor 24 h average PM_2.5 recorded at each facility was 43.6 µg/m³ , 103.2 µg/m³ , 35.4 µg/m³ , and 202.5 µg/m³ , and these peaks occurred during the wildfire season. The indoor-to-outdoor PM_2.5 ratio and calculated infiltration efficiencies indicated high variation in the impact of wildfire events on Indoor Air Quality between the four facilities. Notably, infiltration efficiency ranged from 0.22 to 0.76 across the four facilities. We propose that this variability is evidence that PM_2.5 infiltration may be impacted by modifiable building characteristics and human behavioral factors, and this should be addressed in future studies.

Assessment of children's exposure to carbonaceous matter and to PM major and trace elements

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is one of the major environmental concerns due to its harmful effects on human health. As children are particularly vulnerable to particle exposure, this study integrates the concentration of PM chemical compounds measured in the micro-environments (MEs) where children spend most of their time to assess the daily exposure and inhaled dose. PM samples were analysed for organic and elemental carbon and for major and trace elements. Results showed that the MEs that contribute most to the children's daily exposure (80%) and inhaled dose (65%) were homes and schools. Results indicated that the high contribution of particulate organic matter (POM) indoors indicate high contributions of indoor sources to the organic fraction of the particles. The highest concentrations of PM chemical compounds and the highest Indoor/Outdoor ratios were measured in schools, where the contribution of mineral elements stands out due to the resuspension of dust caused by the students and to the chalk used in blackboards. The contribution of the outdoor particles to inhaled dose (24%) was higher than to the exposure (12%), due to the highest inhalation rates associated with the activities performed outdoor. This study indicates the importance of indoor air quality for the children's exposure and health.

Reductions in particulate matter concentrations resulting from air filtration: A randomized sham-controlled crossover study

One-hundred seventy-two households were recruited from regions with high outdoor air pollution (Fresno and Riverside, CA) to participate in a randomized, sham-controlled, cross-over study to determine the effectiveness of high-efficiency air filtration to reduce indoor particle exposures. In 129 households, stand-alone HEPA air cleaners were placed in a bedroom and in the main living area. In 43 households, high-efficiency MERV 16 filters were installed in central forced-air heating and cooling systems and the participating households were asked to run the system on a clean-air cycle for 15 min per hour. Participating households that completed the study received true air filtration for a year and sham air filtration for a year. Air pollution samples were collected at approximately 6-month intervals, with two measurements in each of the sham and true filtration periods. One week indoor and outdoor time-integrated samples were collected for measurement of PM2.5 , PM10 , and ultrafine particulate matter (UFP) measured as PM0.2 . Reflectance measurements were also made on the PM2.5 filters to estimate black carbon. True filtration significantly improved indoor air quality, with a 48% reduction in the geometric mean indoor PM0.2 and PM2.5 concentrations, and a 31% reduction in PM10 . Geometric mean concentrations of indoor/outdoor reflectance values, indicating fraction of particles of outdoor origin remaining indoors, decreased by 77%. Improvements in particle concentrations were greater with continuously operating stand-alone air cleaners than with intermittent central system filtration. Keeping windows closed and increased utilization of the filtration systems further improved indoor air quality.

Short-term effects of real-time individual fine particulate matter exposure on lung function: a panel study in Zhuhai, China

Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) is still the primary air pollutant in most Chinese cities and its adverse effects on lung function have been widely reported. However, short-term effects of individual exposure to PM_2.5 on pulmonary expiration flow indices remain largely unknown. In this study, we examined the short-term effects of real-time individual exposure to PM_2.5 on lung function in a panel of 115 healthy adults. We measured individual real-time PM_2.5 exposure and lung function. Environmental PM_2.5 concentrations in the same period were collected from the nearest monitoring station. Generalized linear model was used to assess the effects of individual PM_2.5 exposure on lung function after adjusting for potential confounders. Individual PM_2.5 exposure ranged from 18.5 to 42.4 μg/m³ with fluctuations over time and ambient PM_2.5 concentrations presented a moderate trend of fluctuation at the same day. Except forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁) decline related to 2-h moving average PM_2.5 exposure, no significant associations between individual PM_2.5 exposure and other volume indices including forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV₁/FVC ratio were observed. The adverse effects of individual PM_2.5 exposure on pulmonary expiration flow indices including peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMF) and forced expiratory flow at 50%, and 75% of vital capacity (FEF_50% and FEF_75%) were observed to be strongest at 2 moving average hours and could last for 24 h. Stratified analysis showed greater and longer effects among participants who were aged over 40 years, males, or smokers. These findings suggested that individual PM_2.5 exposure was significantly associated with altered lung function, especially with pulmonary expiration flow indices decline, which was strongest at 2 moving average hours and could last for 24 h.

Quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) in indoor dust: Implication for tracking indoor source accumulation of organic pollutant exposure

Indoor dust has been used as a proxy for estimating human indoor pollutant exposure risks, yet source identification remains challenging. This study tentatively investigated whether quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) of dust, could be applied to indicate sources and their respective contributions for a major class of indoor organic pollutants organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). We observed significant correlations between OPFR concentrations and lipid content (p < 0.05) in house dusts. Using 15 signature fatty acids (FAs) in various indoor sources and the QFASA model, we found that clothing (39.1% in Australia and 36.5% in China) was the predominant contributing vector of dust OPFR followed by cooking oil and pet hair. Among these sources, clothing materials were proposed to be important vectors introducing organic pollutants to the indoor environment. Our QFASA contribution estimation analyses allowed for accurate prediction of most OPFR concentrations in clothing, validating our findings that clothing materials may serve as important carrier for OPFRs in indoor migration. This is the first study attempting to identify sources of organic pollutants using QFASA in an indoor setting and will provide important insight into the transfer of organic pollutants in indoor environment.

Effectiveness of portable HEPA air cleaners on reducing indoor endotoxin, PM10, and coarse particulate matter in an agricultural cohort of children with asthma: A randomized intervention trial

We conducted a randomized trial of portable HEPA air cleaners in the homes of children age 6-12 years with asthma in the Yakima Valley, Washington. All families received asthma education while intervention families also received two HEPA cleaners (child's bedroom, living room). We collected 14-day integrated samples of endotoxin in settled dust and PM₁₀ and PM_10-2.5 in the air of the children's bedrooms at baseline and one-year follow-up, and used linear regression to compare follow-up levels, adjusting for baseline. Seventy-one families (36 HEPA, 35 control) completed the study. Baseline geometric mean (GSD) endotoxin loadings were 1565 (6.3) EU/m² and 2110 (4.9) EU/m² , respectively, in HEPA vs. control homes while PM₁₀ and PM_10-2.5 were 22.5 (1.9) μg/m³ and 9.5 (2.9) μg/m³ , respectively, in HEPA homes, and 19.8 (1.8) μg/m³ and 7.7 (2.0) μg/m³ , respectively, in control homes. At follow-up, HEPA families had 46% lower (95% CI, 31%-57%) PM₁₀ on average than control families, consistent with prior studies. In the best-fit heterogeneous slopes model, HEPA families had 49% (95% CI, 6%-110%) and 89% lower (95% CI, 28%-177%) PM_10-2.5 at follow-up, respectively, at 50th and 75th percentile baseline concentrations. Endotoxin loadings did not differ significantly at follow-up (4% lower, HEPA homes; 95% CI, -87% to 50%).

Contributions of internal emissions to peaks and incremental indoor PM2.5 in rural coal use households

Indoor air quality is critically important to the human as people spend most time indoors. Indoor PM_2.5 is related to the outdoor levels, but more directly influenced by internal sources. Severe household air pollution from solid fuel use has been recognized as one major risk for human health especailly in rural area, however, the issue is significantly overlooked in most national air quality controls and intervention policies. Here, by using low-cost sensors, indoor PM_2.5 in rural homes burning coals was monitored for ~4 months and analyzed for its temporal dynamics, distributions, relationship with outdoor PM_2.5, and quantitative contributions of internal sources. A bimodal distribution of indoor PM_2.5 was identified and the bimodal characteristic was more significant at the finer time resolution. The bimodal distribution maxima were corresponding to the emissions from strong internal sources and the influence of outdoor PM_2.5, respectively. Indoor PM_2.5 was found to be correlated with the outdoor PM_2.5, even though indoor coal combustion for heating was thought to be predominant source of indoor PM_2.5. The indoor-outdoor relationship differed significantly between the heating and non-heating seasons. Impacts of typical indoor sources like cooking, heating associated with coal use, and smoking were quantitatively analyzed based on the highly time-resolved PM_2.5. Estimated contribution of outdoor PM_2.5 to the indoor PM_2.5 was ~48% during the non-heating period, but decreased to about 32% during the heating period. The contribution of indoor heating burning coals comprised up to 47% of the indoor PM_2.5 during the heating period, while the other indoor sources contributed to ~20%. The study, based on a relatively long-term timely resolved PM_2.5 data from a large number of rural households, provided informative results on temporal dynamics of indoor PM_2.5 and quantitative contributions of internal sources, promoting scientific understanding on sources and impacts of household air pollution.

Air Pollution Exposure and Daily Lung Function in COPD: Effect Modification by Eosinophilia

RATIONALE

Few studies have assessed personal exposure to pollutants and lung function among adults with COPD. Blood eosinophilia may be a biomarker of airway inflammation and pollution susceptibility.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate if daily pollutant exposures are associated with lung function and if associations are modified by eosinophilia in COPD.

METHODS

We recruited 30 former smokers with moderate-to-severe COPD living in the Boston area and followed them up to 4 non-consecutive months in different seasons. Participants measured morning lung function and carried a portable air quality monitor daily. Previous-day exposure to pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, and ozone) were measured by portable and community monitors. We constructed multi-level linear mixed-effects models with random intercepts for person and observation month, adjusted for temperature, humidity, age, sex, race, height, weight, income, and season, to assess associations of previous-day pollutant exposure with lung function and effect modification by eosinophilia (< vs > 150 cells/µL).

RESULTS

A total of 3,314 observations with exposure and lung function data were collected. Each IQR (5.1 ppb) higher previous-day personal exposure to NO2 was associated with a 11.3 mL (95% CI: -18.7, -4.0) lower FEV1 and a 18.0 mL (95% CI: -32.0, -4.2) lower FVC. Personal and community-level exposure to PM2.5 and community-level NO2 were negatively associated with FEV1 among the 55.2% of participants with eosinophilia (Pinteraction <0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study highlights the need to address air pollution exposure among COPD patients. Future research is needed to verify if eosinophilia is a biomarker for susceptibility to air pollution in COPD.

Residential cooking and use of kitchen ventilation: The impact on exposure

Cooking is one of the most significant indoor sources of particles. This study investigated residential cooking and kitchen ventilation behaviors in Canadian homes, using data from 132 households in Halifax and Edmonton. Only 27% of the cooking activities were conducted with added ventilation (range hood use 10%, window opening 15%, and both 2%). The use pattern of the range hood was associated with mealtime and cooking method/device. The frequency of window opening was influenced by season and did not show a clear linkage to ventilation for cooking. Fine particle (PM_2.5) decay rates, source strengths, emission masses, and exposure levels were estimated for cooking activities under different ventilation conditions. The results demonstrated the effect of kitchen ventilation on PM_2.5 removal. Using a range hood and (or) opening kitchen windows increased the geometric mean (GM) decay rate by a factor of two. The GM source strength from cooking was 0.73 mg min^-1 (geometric standard deviation (GSD) = 4.3) over an average cooking time of 17 minutes (GSD = 2.6). The GM emission mass was 12.6 mg (GSD = 5.3). The GM exposure from a single cooking event was 12 µg m^-3 h (GSD = 6.6). The average number of cooking events per day was 2.4 (SD = 1.5) times. Cooking contributed about 22% to the total daily PM_2.5 exposure in participating homes. The frequency and duration of cooking conducted at various temporal scales (mealtime, weekday/weekend, and season), as well as the use of different methods and devices, can support more accurate modeling of the impact of cooking on indoor air quality and human exposure.Implications: The inadequate use of ventilation during cooking highlights the need for educational programs on cooking exposures and ventilation strategies, such as running a range hood fan or opening kitchen windows when possible. Exposures in newly built homes might be a bigger concern than older homes if not providing sufficient ventilation during cooking, due to the tighter building envelopes.

Temporal and spatial variation of PM2.5 in indoor air monitored by low-cost sensors

Indoor air pollution has significant adverse health impacts, but its spatiotemporal variations and source contributions are not well quantified. In this study, we used low-cost sensors to measure PM_2.5 concentrations in a typical apartment in Beijing. The measurements were conducted at 15 indoor sites and one outdoor site on 1-minute temporal resolution (convert to 10-minute averages for data analysis) from March 14 to 24, 2020. Based on these highly spatially-and temporally-resolved data, we characterized spatiotemporal variations and source contributions of indoor PM_2.5 in this apartment. It was found that indoor particulate matter predominantly originates from outdoor infiltration and cooking emissions with the latter contributing more fine particles. Indoor PM_2.5 concentrations were found to be correlated with ambient levels but were generally lower than those outdoors with an average I/O of 0.85. The predominant indoor source was cooking, leading to occasional high spikes. The variations observed in most rooms lagged behind those measured outdoors and in the studied kitchen. Differences between rooms were found to depend on pathway distances from sources. On average, outdoor sources contributed 36% of indoor PM_2.5, varying extensively over time and among rooms. From observed PM_2.5 concentrations at the indoor sites, source strengths, and pathway distances, a multivariate regression model was developed to predict spatiotemporal variations of PM_2.5. The model explains 79% of the observed variation and can be used to dynamically simulate PM_2.5 concentrations at any site indoors. The model's simplicity suggests the potential for regional-scale application for indoor air quality modeling.

Real-time indoor PM2.5 monitoring in an urban cohort: Implications for exposure disparities and source control

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations are highly variable indoors, with evidence for exposure disparities. Real-time monitoring coupled with novel statistical approaches can better characterize drivers of elevated PM2.5 indoors. We collected real-time PM2.5 data in 71 homes in an urban community of Greater Boston, Massachusetts using Alphasense OPC-N2 monitors. We estimated indoor PM2.5 concentrations of non-ambient origin using mass balance principles, and investigated their associations with indoor source activities at the 0.50 to 0.95 exposure quantiles using mixed effects quantile regressions, overall and by homeownership. On average, the majority of indoor PM2.5 concentrations were of non-ambient origin (≥77%), with a higher proportion at increasing quantiles of the exposure distribution. Major source predictors of non-ambient PM2.5 concentrations at the upper quantile (0.95) were cooking (1.4-23 μg/m3) and smoking (15 μg/m3, only among renters), with concentrations also increasing with range hood use (3.6 μg/m3) and during the heating season (5.6 μg/m3). Across quantiles, renters in multifamily housing experienced a higher proportion of PM2.5 concentrations from non-ambient sources than homeowners in single- and multifamily housing. Renters also more frequently reported cooking, smoking, spray air freshener use, and second-hand smoke exposure, and lived in units with higher air exchange rate and building density. Accounting for these factors explained observed PM2.5 exposure disparities by homeownership, particularly in the upper exposure quantiles. Our results suggest that renters in multifamily housing may experience higher PM2.5 exposures due to a combination of behavioral and building factors that are amenable to intervention.

Indoor Exposure to Selected Air Pollutants in the Home Environment: A Systematic Review

(1) Background: There is increasing awareness that the quality of the indoor environment affects our health and well-being. Indoor air quality (IAQ) in particular has an impact on multiple health outcomes, including respiratory and cardiovascular illness, allergic symptoms, cancers, and premature mortality. (2) Methods: We carried out a global systematic literature review on indoor exposure to selected air pollutants associated with adverse health effects, and related household characteristics, seasonal influences and occupancy patterns. We screened records from six bibliographic databases: ABI/INFORM, Environment Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts, PubMed, ProQuest Biological and Health Professional, and Scopus. (3) Results: Information on indoor exposure levels and determinants, emission sources, and associated health effects was extracted from 141 studies from 29 countries. The most-studied pollutants were particulate matter (PM_2.5 and PM₁₀); nitrogen dioxide (NO₂); volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, xylenes and formaldehyde; and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including naphthalene. Identified indoor PM_2.5 sources include smoking, cooking, heating, use of incense, candles, and insecticides, while cleaning, housework, presence of pets and movement of people were the main sources of coarse particles. Outdoor air is a major PM_2.5 source in rooms with natural ventilation in roadside households. Major sources of NO₂ indoors are unvented gas heaters and cookers. Predictors of indoor NO₂ are ventilation, season, and outdoor NO₂ levels. VOCs are emitted from a wide range of indoor and outdoor sources, including smoking, solvent use, renovations, and household products. Formaldehyde levels are higher in newer houses and in the presence of new furniture, while PAH levels are higher in smoking households. High indoor particulate matter, NO₂ and VOC levels were typically associated with respiratory symptoms, particularly asthma symptoms in children. (4) Conclusions: Household characteristics and occupant activities play a large role in indoor exposure, particularly cigarette smoking for PM_2.5, gas appliances for NO₂, and household products for VOCs and PAHs. Home location near high-traffic-density roads, redecoration, and small house size contribute to high indoor air pollution. In most studies, air exchange rates are negatively associated with indoor air pollution. These findings can inform interventions aiming to improve IAQ in residential properties in a variety of settings.

Particulate matter exchange between atmosphere and roads surfaces in urban areas

The deposition and the re-suspension of particulate matter (PM) in urban areas are the key processes that contribute not only to stormwater pollution, but also to air pollution. However, investigation of the deposition and the re-suspension of PM is challenging because of the difficulties in distinguishing between the resuspended and the deposited PM. This study created two Bayesian Networks (BN) models to explore the deposition and the re-suspension of PM as well as the important influential factors. The outcomes of BN modelling revealed that deposition and re-suspension of PM10 occurred under both, high-traffic and low-traffic conditions, and the re-suspension of PM2.5 occurred under low-traffic conditions. The deposition of PM10 under low-volume traffic condition is 1.6 times higher than under high-volume traffic condition, which is attributed to the decrease in PM10 caused by relatively higher turbulence under high-volume traffic conditions. PM10 is more easily resuspended from road surfaces compared to PM2.5 as the particles which larger than the thickness of the laminar airflow over the road surface are more easily removed from road surfaces. The increase in wind speed contributes to the increase in PM build-up by transporting particulates from roadside areas to the road surfaces and the airborne PM2.5 and PM10 increases with the increase in relative humidity. The study outcomes provide a step improvement in the understanding of the transfer processes of PM2.5 and PM10 between atmosphere and urban road surfaces, which in turn will contribute to the effective design of mitigation measures for urban stormwater and air pollution.

A novel model for regional indoor PM2.5 quantification with both external and internal contributions included

PM_2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic size ≤ 2.5 μm) of indoor origins is a dominant contributor to the overall air pollution exposure. Although some sophisticated models have been developed to simulate indoor air quality for individual households, it is still challenging to quantify indoor PM_2.5 on a regional scale, which is critical for health impact assessments. In this study, a new model was developed to predict indoor PM_2.5 concentrations by quantifying the external penetration, as well as the internal contributions. The model was parameterized based on a set of simultaneously measured indoor and outdoor PM_2.5 concentrations at five-second temporal resolution for 53 households in Beijing. This study found that indoor PM_2.5 concentrations were significantly correlated with those in the outdoor environment with an approximately 1-h lag-time on average. Outdoor-to-indoor penetration dominated the contribution to indoor PM_2.5 during polluted hours with relatively high ambient PM_2.5 concentrations, while the indoor PM_2.5, during clean hours, was contributed by internal sources, including smoking, cooking, incense burning, and human disturbance. The influence of windows, house area, and air purifier use was addressed in the new model. The model was applied to evaluate indoor PM_2.5 concentrations in six urban districts of Beijing via an uncertainty analysis. The model was developed based on and applied to households using clean residential energy, and it would be interesting also important to evaluate it in households using solid fuels.

Measurements of Gross α- and β-Activities of Archived PM2.5 and PM10 Teflon Filter Samples

The adverse effects of ambient particulate matter (PM) on human health have been well demonstrated, but the underlying properties responsible for its toxicity are still unclear. We hypothesized that particulate radioactivity, which is due to the attachment of radioactive nuclides on particle surfaces, may be responsible for part of PM toxicity. We measured the gross α- and β-activities for daily PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ filters collected at the Harvard Supersite in downtown Boston from 2005 to 2006 and calculated the radioactivities at the time of air sampling retrospectively based on a previously established formula. We examined the relationship between different radioactivities and compared our measurements to those measured at the Boston EPA RadNet Station. The results showed that the majority of PM₁₀ radioactivity is associated with that of PM_2.5 samples for both α-activity (98%) and β-activity (83%). A strong linear relationship was observed between the α- and β-activities for both PM_2.5 [slope = 0.47 (±0.03); p-value < 0.0001] and PM₁₀ [slope = 0.46 (±0.09); p-value < 0.0001] samples. Measurements at the Harvard Supersite and at EPA RadNet sites are highly correlated for both α-activities [slope = 0.17 (±0.02), p-value < 0.0001] and β-activities [slope = 0.30 (±0.05), p-value < 0.0001]. Additionally, we identified several significant predictors for PM_2.5 α-activities. This novel method we developed to measure α- and β-activities from archived filters will make it possible to assess the retrospective particle radioactivity exposure for future epidemiological studies.

Monitoring Excess Exposure to Air Pollution for Professional Drivers in London Using Low-Cost Sensors

In this pilot study, low-cost air pollution sensor nodes were fitted in waste removal trucks, hospital vans and taxis to record drivers’ exposure to air pollution in Central London. Particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ), CO 2 , NO 2 , temperature and humidity were recorded in real-time with nodes containing low-cost sensors, an electrochemical gas sensor for NO 2 , an optical particle counter for PM 2.5 and PM 10 and a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor for CO 2 , temperature and relative humidity. An intervention using a pollution filter to trap PM and NO 2 was also evaluated. The measurements were compared with urban background and roadside monitoring stations at Honor Oak Park and Marylebone Road, respectively. The vehicle records show PM and NO 2 concentrations similar to Marylebone Road and a higher NO 2 -to-PM ratio than at Honor Oak Park. Drivers are exposed to elevated pollution levels relative to Honor Oak Park: 1.72 μ g m − 3 , 1.92 μ g m − 3 and 58.38 ppb for PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and NO 2 , respectively. The CO 2 levels ranged from 410 to over 4000 ppm. There is a significant difference in average concentrations of PM 2.5 and PM 10 between the vehicle types and a non-significant difference in the average concentrations measured with and without the pollution filter within the sectors. In conclusion, drivers face elevated air pollution exposure as part of their jobs.

Particle size dynamics and risk implication of atmospheric aerosols in South-Asian subcontinent

Presented here are size-resolved aerosol measurements conducted using cascade impactor set at breathing zone in indoor-outdoor residential microenvironments. PM_2.5 contributed about 64-80% of PM₁₀ in which over 29% of mass was shared by PM_0.25. Total PM concentration varied from 261 ± 22 μg/m³ (indoors) to 256 ± 64 μg/m³ (outdoors) annually; whilst summer and monsoon demonstrated 1.2- and 1.9- times lower concentration than winters. The measured metals ranged between 9% (in PM_2.5-10) to 18% (in PM_1-2.5) of aerosol concentration; whereby crustal elements dominated coarse fractions with relatively higher proportion of toxic elements (Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni) in ultrafine range. Considering lognormal particle size distribution (PSD), accumulation mode represented the main surface area during entire monitoring period (Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter (MMAD) < 1). PSD of metal species reflected their different emission sources with respect to season integrated samples. High air exchange conditions permitted the shift of indoor PSD pattern closer to that of outdoor air while low ventilation in winters reflected modal shift of metals (Pb, Mg. K) towards larger size particles. Relative surge towards smaller diameter size of soluble metal fraction relative to the total concentration of toxic elements was noted on an annual basis with high infiltration capacity of smaller size particulates (Finf =1.36 for ultrafine particles in summers) identified through indoor-outdoor regression analysis. Principal Component Analysis identified sources such as vehicular traffic, combustion, crustal emission with activities viz. smoking and those involving use of electric appliances.

Effects of the Use of Air Purifier on Indoor Environment and Respiratory System among Healthy Adults

Air purifiers have become popular among ordinary families. However, it remains controversial whether indoor air purification improves the respiratory health of healthy adults. A randomized crossover intervention study was conducted with 32 healthy individuals. The subjects were categorized into two groups. One group continuously used true air purifiers, and the other followed with sham air purifiers for 4 weeks. Following this first intervention, all the subjects underwent a 4-week washout period and continued with the second 4-week intervention with the alternate air purifiers. We collected fine particulate matter (PM) ≤ 2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5), coarse particulate matter between 2.5 and 10 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10–2.5) and ozone (O₃). The subjects’ pulmonary function and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) were measured during the study period. The indoor PM2.5 concentrations decreased by 11% with the true air purifiers compared to those with sham air purifiers. However, this decrease was not significant (p = 0.08). The air purification did not significantly improve the pulmonary function of the study subjects. In contrast, an increase in the indoor PM10–2.5 and O₃ concentration led to a significant decrease in the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV_1.0)/forced vital capacity (FVC) and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), respectively. In conclusion, air purification slightly improved the indoor PM2.5 concentrations in ordinary homes but had no demonstrable impact on improving health.

Mobile Measurement of PM2.5 Based on an Individual in Ulaanbaatar City

In the present study, we measured fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) on the daily route of our study participant in order to determine her exposure and dose of PM_2.5 in every microenvironment (ME). The measuring instrument, created by Nagoya University and Panasonic Corporation, Japan, was carried close to the breathing zone most of the time. Each data point was collected for 10–30 s or 2–6 cycles/min for 24 h from 1 October 2018 to 30 December 2018. Public transportation showed the highest level of PM_2.5 compared with other MEs, including residence apartments, houses (ger district), the National University of Mongolia (NUM), food courts or restaurants, and other indoor locations. The personal daily average exposure to PM_2.5 was 35 µg/m³ on 4 November 2018; on the other hand, this value was evaluated as the highest level of exposure compared to other measurement days. Interestingly, the study participant‘s exposure and dose of PM_2.5 was lower than those stated in the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines, with 25 µg/m³ from 4:00 to 7:00.

Dust Events and Indoor Air Quality in Residential Homes in Kuwait

Kuwait is a developed Middle Eastern country that is impacted by frequent dust storms from regional and/or remote deserts. The effectiveness of keeping homes tightly closed during these events to reduce dust exposures was assessed using indoor and outdoor particle samples at 10 residences within the metropolitan Kuwait City area. Specifically, this study compared indoor and outdoor levels of black carbon and 19 trace elements (Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Sr, and Zr) during dust and non-dust events and found that particle penetration efficiencies were lower during dust storm events (less than 20–30%) than during non-dust storm events (40–60%). Coarse particles had lower penetration efficiency compared to fine particles, which is due to differences in infiltration rates and settling velocities between these two size fractions. Our findings suggest that increasing home insulation could be an effective strategy to reduce indoor exposure to crustal particles from dust storm events in residential houses of Kuwait City.

Emission characteristics of particulate matter, odors, and volatile organic compounds from the grilling of pork

Meat-grilling restaurants are considered to be residential emission sources of air pollutants. To investigate the emission characteristics of particulate matter (PM), odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the grilling of meat, a grilling apparatus equipped with butane gas burners was used to grill pork belly and marinated pork ribs in a laboratory setting. When grilling the pork belly, the emission factor for PM with a diameter of 2.5 μm or below (PM_2.5) was 754 mg-PM·kg-meat^-1, accounting for 99% of total suspended particles (TSPs), while that of the marinated pork ribs was 137 mg-PM·kg-meat^-1 (96% of TSPs). Ammonia and acetaldehyde were the most common odors emitted during grilling at 43-88 mg·kg-meat^-1 and 22-30 mg·kg-meat^-1, respectively. Aldehydes were the most significant contributor to total odor intensity (36%-67%). Benzene, vinyl acetate, and hexene were the most abundant VOCs for the pork belly, while butane, vinyl acetate, and n-dodecane were the most abundant for the marinated ribs. Among the VOCs emitted from the pork grilling process, hexene, butane, and toluene were the dominant ozone precursors. The information obtained in this study is useful for furthering the understanding of the characteristics of air pollutants emitted from actual meat-grilling restaurants. Additionally, knowledge of the PM, odor, and VOC emission characteristics and their emission factors is useful for establishing management strategies for air pollutants from meat-grilling restaurants.

Relationship between indoor and outdoor size-fractionated particulate matter in urban microenvironments: Levels, chemical composition and sources

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with adverse health outcomes, particularly in susceptible population groups such as children. This study aims to characterise children's exposure to PM and its chemical constituents. Size-segregated aerosol samples (PM0.25, PM0.25-0.5, PM0.5-1.0, PM1.0-2.5 and PM2.5-10) were collected in the indoor and outdoor of homes and schools located in Lisbon (Portugal). Organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) were determined by a thermo-optical method, whereas major and trace elements were analysed by X-Ray Fluorescence. In school, the children were exposed to higher PM concentrations than in home, which might be associated not only to the elevated human occupancy but also to outdoor infiltration. The pattern of PM mass size distribution was dependent on the location (home vs. school and indoor vs. outdoor). The presence of EC in PM0.25 and OC in PM0.25-0.5 was linked to traffic exhaust emissions. OC and EC in PM2.5-10 may be explained by their adhesion to the surface of coarser particles. Generally, the concentrations of mineral and marine elements increased with increasing PM size, while for anthropogenic elements happened the opposite. In schools, the concentrations of mineral matter, anthropogenic elements and marine aerosol were higher than in homes. High mineral matter concentrations found in schools were related to the close proximity to busy roads and elevated human occupancy. Overall, the results suggest that exposure to PM is relevant and highlights the need for strategies that provide healthier indoor environments, principally in schools.

Source identification of heavy metals and stable carbon isotope in indoor dust from different functional areas in Hefei, China

Dust on air conditioning filters can represent the re-suspended particulate matter in indoor air, which may pose potential health risks to humans. However, source identification and influence factors of indoor dust are controversial. The present study investigated the distribution of Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn, as well as stable carbon isotope, in indoor dust from three different functional zones in Hefei to discuss the sources and influence factors of indoor dust. PCA analysis of heavy metals showed that indoor sources (such as cooking and smoking) were the main sources. Negative correlation appeared between family size and heavy metal concentrations. This was because people acted as a sink of pollutants. Concentration analysis of heavy metals revealed that smoking and cooking had weak relevance with heavy metal concentrations. While through the δ¹³C analysis, cooking had a significant correlation with δ¹³C of indoor dust, instructing that cooking was a significant source of indoor dust. Besides, smoking also had a certain correlation with δ¹³C of indoor dust, instructing that smoking was one of the sources of indoor dust.

Pollution evaluation and health risk assessment of airborne toxic metals in both indoors and outdoors of the Pearl River Delta, China

BACKGROUND

Industries deveploped cities in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) are suffering serious atmospheric metals pollution, in which, people's health risks after inhaling particulate matter (PM) with airborne toxic metals might be rising. This study provides the latest and comprehensive pollution profiles of toxic metals both from indoors and outdoors in PRD.

METHOD

Total 22 pairs of indoor and outdoor total suspended particulates (TSP), PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 samples in residential area were synchronously sampled and investigated in detail within 9 main cities of the PRD, China. The concentrations of the Zn, Pb, Mn, Ni, As, V, Sb and Cd in the samples were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Health risk assessment via inhalation of residents was estimated by EPA recommended model with exposure parameters of Chinese population indoor and outdoor activity pattern.

RESULTS

The trends followed as Zn > Pb ≈ Mn > Ni > As > V > Sb ≈ Cd for both indoors and outdoors. Investigated metals were found to be dominantly distributed in PM_2.5 for both indoors and outdoors. The concentrations of outdoor PM and the most of metals were significantly higher than those of indoors. The results concluded that toxic metals might be from regional emission, such as Pb from ceramic factory, Ni from motor factory and V from oil combustion of ship. In health risk assessments, LCR is higher than 1.00E-06 for adults, while contrary to children in the PRD. Among four carcinogenic metals, LCR of As and Cd are higher than 1.00E-06 in some cities. In addition, HI below one for both adults and children in the PRD.

CONCLUSIONS

Outdoor metals concentrations are related to local industry types, while indoor metals are mainly from outdoor. Health risk assessments indicated that adults suffered unsafe cancer risk from metals, especially As and Cd in some cities, while both adults and children did not suffer non-carcinogenic risks.

Total surface area in indoor environments

Certain processes in indoor air, such as deposition, partitioning, and heterogeneous reactions, involve interactions with surfaces. We have characterized the surface area, volume, shape, and material of objects in 10 bedrooms, nine kitchens, and three offices. The resolution of the measurements was ∼1 cm. The ratio of surface area with contents to that without contents did not vary by type of room and averaged 1.5 ± 0.3 (mean ± standard deviation) across all rooms. The ratio of the volume minus contents to nominal volume averaged 0.9 ± 0.1 and was lower for kitchens compared to bedrooms and offices. Ignoring contents, the surface-area-to-volume ratio was 1.8 ± 0.3 m-1; accounting for contents, the ratio was 3.2 ± 1.2 m-1, or 78% higher. These two ratios did not vary by type of room and were similar to those measured for 33 rooms in another study. Due to substantial differences in the design and contents of kitchens, their ratios had the highest variability among the three room types. The most common shape of surfaces was flat rectangular, while each room also had many irregularly-shaped objects. Paint-covered surfaces and stained wood were the two most common materials in each room, accounting for an average of 42% and 22% of total surface area, respectively, although the distribution of materials varied by room type. These findings have important implications for understanding the chemistry of indoor environments, as the available surface area for deposition, partitioning, and reactions is higher and more complex than assumed in simple models.

Overview of HOMEChem: House Observations of Microbial and Environmental Chemistry

The House Observations of Microbial and Environmental Chemistry (HOMEChem) study is a collaborative field investigation designed to probe how everyday activities influence the emissions, chemical transformations and removal of trace gases and particles in indoor air. Sequential and layered experiments in a research house included cooking, cleaning, variable occupancy, and window-opening. This paper describes the overall design of HOMEChem and presents preliminary case studies investigating the concentrations of reactive trace gases, aerosol particles, and surface films. Cooking was a large source of VOCs, CO2, NOx, and particles. By number, cooking particles were predominantly in the ultrafine mode. Organic aerosol dominated the submicron mass, and, while variable between meals and throughout the cooking process, was dominated by components of hydrocarbon character and low oxygen content, similar to cooking oil. Air exchange in the house ensured that cooking particles were present for only short periods. During unoccupied background intervals, particle concentrations were lower indoors than outdoors. The cooling coils of the house ventilation system induced cyclic changes in water soluble gases. Even during unoccupied periods, concentrations of many organic trace gases were higher indoors than outdoors, consistent with housing materials being potential sources of these compounds to the outdoor environment. Organic material accumulated on indoor surfaces, and exhibited chemical signatures similar to indoor organic aerosol.

Ambient air pollution exposure and risk and progression of interstitial lung abnormalities: the Framingham Heart Study

BACKGROUND

Ambient air pollution accelerates lung function decline among adults, however, there are limited data about its role in the development and progression of early stages of interstitial lung disease.

AIMS

To evaluate associations of long-term exposure to traffic and ambient pollutants with odds of interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) and progression of ILA on repeated imaging.

METHODS

We ascertained ILA on chest CT obtained from 2618 Framingham participants from 2008 to 2011. Among 1846 participants who also completed a cardiac CT from 2002 to 2005, we determined interval ILA progression. We assigned distance from home address to major roadway, and the 5-year average of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), elemental carbon (EC, a traffic-related PM_2.5 constituent) and ozone using spatio-temporal prediction models. Logistic regression models were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, packyears of smoking, household tobacco exposure, neighbourhood household value, primary occupation, cohort and date.

RESULTS

Among 2618 participants with a chest CT, 176 (6.7%) had ILA, 1361 (52.0%) had no ILA, and the remainder were indeterminate. Among 1846 with a preceding cardiac CT, 118 (6.4%) had ILA with interval progression. In adjusted logistic regression models, an IQR difference in 5-year EC exposure of 0.14 µg/m³ was associated with a 1.27 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.55) times greater odds of ILA, and a 1.33 (95% CI 1.00 to 1.76) times greater odds of ILA progression. PM_2.5 and O₃ were not associated with ILA or ILA progression.

CONCLUSIONS

Exposure to EC may increase risk of progressive ILA, however, associations with other measures of ambient pollution were inconclusive.

The impact of air exchange rate on ambient air pollution exposure and inequalities across all residential parcels in Massachusetts

Individual housing characteristics can modify outdoor ambient air pollution infiltration through air exchange rate (AER). Time and labor-intensive methods needed to measure AER has hindered characterization of AER distributions across large geographic areas. Using publicly-available data and regression models associating AER with housing characteristics, we estimated AER for all Massachusetts residential parcels. We conducted an exposure disparities analysis, considering ambient PM_2.5 concentrations and residential AERs. Median AERs (h^-1) with closed windows for winter and summer were 0.74 (IQR: 0.47-1.09) and 0.36 (IQR: 0.23-0.57), respectively, with lower AERs for single family homes. Across residential parcels, variability of indoor PM_2.5 concentrations of ambient origin was twice that of ambient PM_2.5 concentrations. Housing parcels above the 90th percentile of both AER and ambient PM_2.5 (i.e., the leakiest homes in areas of highest ambient PM_2.5)-vs. below the 10 percentile-were located in neighborhoods with higher proportions of Hispanics (20.0% vs. 2.0%), households with an annual income of less than $20,000 (26.0% vs. 7.5%), and individuals with less than a high school degree (23.2% vs. 5.8%). Our approach can be applied in epidemiological studies to estimate exposure modifiers or to characterize exposure disparities that are not solely based on ambient concentrations.

Wood stove use and other determinants of personal and indoor exposures to particulate air pollution and ozone among elderly persons in a Northern Suburb

A six-month winter-spring study was conducted in a suburb of the northern European city of Kuopio, Finland, to identify and quantify factors determining daily personal exposure and home indoor levels of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5 , diameter <2.5 µm) and its light absorption coefficient (PM_2.5abs ), a proxy for combustion-derived black carbon. Moreover, determinants of home indoor ozone (O₃ ) concentration were examined. Local central site outdoor, home indoor, and personal daily levels of pollutants were monitored in this suburb among 37 elderly residents. Outdoor concentrations of the pollutants were significant determinants of their levels in home indoor air and personal exposures. Natural ventilation in the detached and row houses increased personal exposure to PM_2.5 , but not to PM_2.5abs , when compared with mechanical ventilation. Only cooking out of the recorded household activities increased indoor PM_2.5 . The use of a wood stove room heater or wood-fired sauna stove was associated with elevated concentrations of personal PM_2.5 and PM_2.5abs , and indoor PM_2.5abs . Candle burning increased daily indoor and personal PM_2.5abs , and it was also a determinant of indoor ozone level. In conclusion, relatively short-lasting wood and candle burning of a few hours increased residents' daily exposure to potentially hazardous, combustion-derived carbonaceous particulate matter.

Siloxane in baking moulds, emission to indoor air and migration to food during baking with an electric oven

Linear and cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (l-VMS and c-VMS) are man-made chemicals with no natural source. They have been widely used in cosmetics, personal care products, coatings and many other products. As a consequence of their wide use, VMS can be found in different environmental media, as well as in humans. We bought 14 new silicone baking moulds and 3 metallic moulds from the market and used them in different baking experiments. Four of the silicone baking moulds were produced in Germany, two in Italy, four in China, and for the other moulds were no information available. The metal forms were all produced in Germany. VMS were measured in the indoor air throughout the baking process and at the edge and in the center of the finished cakes using a GC/MS system. Additionally, the particle number concentration (PNC) and particle size distribution were measured in the indoor air. The highest median concentrations of VMS were observed immediately following baking: 301 μg/m³ of D7, 212 μg/m³ of D6, and 130 μg/m³ of D8. The silicone moulds containing the highest concentrations of c-VMS corresponded with distinctly higher concentrations of the compounds in indoor air. Using a mould for more than one baking cycle reduced the indoor air concentrations substantially. Samples collected from the edge of the cake had higher concentrations relative to samples from the center, with a mean initial concentration of 6.6 mg/kg of D15, 3.9 mg/kg of D9, 3.7 mg/kg of D12, and 4.8 mg/kg of D18. D3 to D5 were measured only at very low concentrations. Before starting the experiment, an average PNC of 7300 particles/cm³ was observed in the room's air, while a PNC of 140,000 particles/cm³ was observed around the electric stove while it was baking, but this PNC slowly decreased after the oven was switched off. Baking with 4 of the moulds exceeded the German indoor precaution guide value for c-VMS, but the health hazard guide value was not reached during every experiment. Compared to other exposure routes, c-VMS contamination of cake from silicone moulds seems to be low, as demonstrated by the low concentrations of D4 and D6 measured. For less volatile c-VMS > D6 the results of the study indicate that food might play a more important role for daily intake. As a general rule, silicone moulds should be used only after precleaning and while strictly following the temperature suggestions of the producers.

The Fort Collins commuter study: Variability in personal exposure to air pollutants by microenvironment

This study investigated the role of microenvironment on personal exposures to black carbon (BC), fine particulate mass (PM2.5 ), carbon monoxide (CO), and particle number concentration (PNC) among adult residents of Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. Forty-four participants carried a backpack containing personal monitoring instruments for eight nonconsecutive 24-hour periods. Exposures were apportioned into five microenvironments: Home, Work, Transit, Eateries, and Other. Personal exposures exhibited wide heterogeneity that was dominated by within-person variability (both day-to-day and between microenvironment variability). Linear mixed-effects models were used to compare mean personal exposures in each microenvironment, while accounting for possible within-person correlation. Mean personal exposures during Transit and at Eateries tended to be higher than exposures at Home, where participants spent the majority of their time. Compared to Home, mean exposures to BC in Transit were, on average, 129% [95% confidence interval: 101% 162%] higher and exposures to PNC were 180% [101% 289%] higher in Eateries.

Particulate matters and gaseous pollutants in indoor environment and Association of ultra-fine particulate matters (PM1) with lung function

Real-time particulate matters (PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₄, PM₇, PM₁₀, and TSP) with AEROCET 531S (USA), gaseous pollutants (NO₂ and TVOC) with Aeroquel 500 gas sampler (NZ) were measured from the indoor air of houses at four residential locations in Dhaka, Bangladesh. PM₁₀ samples were collected on quartz filters with a dual channel dust sampler (IPM-FDS 2510, India) for selected trace metal determination from five houses of Dhaka. Respiratory function of the occupants was assessed by using a peak expiratory flow meter (Rossmax PF 120). Mean PM₁, PM_2.5, and PM₁₀ concentrations were 46.1 ± 13.4, 76.0 ± 16.2, and 203.9 ± 44.8 μg m^-3, respectively. Higher enrichment factors of Pb, Zn, and Ni were found for traffic, industrial, and constructional activities. The correlation between indoor and outdoor PM_2.5 (R² = 0.42) and ratios (I/O < 1) suggesting indoor air was effected by outdoor air. The concentration of NO₂ (0.076 ± 0.007 ppm) and TVOC (90.0 ± 46.0 ppm) was found above than other studies. The average total hazard ratio (THR) in Dhaka was 9.06 and has the highest exposure to air pollutants (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂) in Khilkhet (THR 10.1) residents. A negative association between ultra-fine particles (PM₁) and peak flow rate measurements of the residents living in these houses indicates that inhalations of ultra-fine particles has great influence on the reduced lung efficiency.

Indoor particle dynamics in a school office: determination of particle concentrations, deposition rates and penetration factors under naturally ventilated conditions

Recently, the problem of indoor particulate matter pollution has received much attention. An increasing number of epidemiological studies show that the concentration of atmospheric particulate matter has a significant effect on human health, even at very low concentrations. Most of these investigations have relied upon outdoor particle concentrations as surrogates of human exposures. However, considering that the concentration distribution of the indoor particulate matter is largely dependent on the extent to which these particles penetrate the building and on the degree of suspension in the indoor air, human exposures to particles of outdoor origin may not be equal to outdoor particle concentration levels. Therefore, it is critical to understand the relationship between the particle concentrations found outdoors and those found in indoor micro-environments. In this study, experiments were conducted using a naturally ventilated office located in Qingdao, China. The indoor and outdoor particle concentrations were measured at the same time using an optical counter with four size ranges. The particle size distribution ranged from 0.3 to 2.5 μm, and the experimental period was from April to September, 2016. Based on the experimental data, the dynamic and mass balance model based on time was used to estimate the penetration rate and deposition rate at air exchange rates of 0.03-0.25 h^-1. The values of the penetration rate and deposition velocity of indoor particles were determined to range from 0.45 to 0.82 h^-1 and 1.71 to 2.82 m/h, respectively. In addition, the particulate pollution exposure in the indoor environment was analyzed to estimate the exposure hazard from indoor particulate matter pollution, which is important for human exposure to particles and associated health effects. The conclusions from this study can serve to provide a better understanding the dynamics and behaviors of airborne particle entering into buildings. And they will also highlight effective methods to reduce exposure to particles in office buildings.

"How do you know those particles are from cigarettes?": An algorithm to help differentiate second-hand tobacco smoke from background sources of household fine particulate matter

BACKGROUND

Second-hand smoke (SHS) at home is a target for public health interventions, such as air quality feedback interventions using low-cost particle monitors. However, these monitors also detect fine particles generated from non-SHS sources. The Dylos DC1700 reports particle counts in the coarse and fine size ranges. As tobacco smoke produces far more fine particles than coarse ones, and tobacco is generally the greatest source of particulate pollution in a smoking home, the ratio of coarse to fine particles may provide a useful method to identify the presence of SHS in homes.

METHODS

An algorithm was developed to differentiate smoking from smoke-free homes. Particle concentration data from 116 smoking homes and 25 non-smoking homes were used to test this algorithm.

RESULTS

The algorithm correctly classified the smoking status of 135 of the 141 homes (96%), comparing favourably with a test of mean mass concentration.

CONCLUSIONS

Applying this algorithm to Dylos particle count measurements may help identify the presence of SHS in homes or other indoor environments. Future research should adapt it to detect individual smoking periods within a 24 h or longer measurement period.

Determinants of personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in adult subjects in Hong Kong

Personal monitoring for fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) was conducted for adults (48 subjects, 18-63years of age) in Hong Kong during the summer and winter of 2014-2015. All filters were analyzed for PM_2.5 mass and constituents (including carbonaceous aerosols, water-soluble ions, and elements). We found that season (p=0.02) and occupation (p<0.001) were significant factors affecting the strength of the personal-ambient PM_2.5 associations. We applied mixed-effects models to investigate the determinants of personal exposure to PM_2.5 mass and constituents, along with within- and between-individual variance components. Ambient PM_2.5 was the dominant predictor of (R²=0.12-0.59, p<0.01) and the largest contributor (>37.3%) to personal exposures for PM_2.5 mass and most components. For all subjects, a one-unit (2.72μg/m³) increase in ambient PM_2.5 was associated with a 0.75μg/m³ (95% CI: 0.59-0.94μg/m³) increase in personal PM_2.5 exposure. The adjusted mixed-effects models included information extracted from individual's activity diaries as covariates. The results showed that season, occupation, time indoors at home, in transit, and cleaning were significant determinants for PM_2.5 components in personal exposure (R²_β=0.06-0.63, p<0.05), contributing to 3.0-70.4% of the variability. For one-hour extra time spent at home, in transit, and cleaning an average increase of 1.7-3.6% (ammonium, sulfate, nitrate, sulfur), 2.7-12.3% (elemental carbon, ammonium, titanium, iron), and 8.7-19.4% (ammonium, magnesium ions, vanadium) in components of personal PM_2.5 were observed, respectively. In this research, the within-individual variance component dominated the total variability for all investigated exposure data except PM_2.5 and EC. Results from this study indicate that performing long-term personal monitoring is needed for examining the associations of mass and constituents of personal PM_2.5 with health outcomes in epidemiological studies by describing the impacts of individual-specific data on personal exposures.

Residential inter-zonal ventilation rates for exposure modeling

Residential inter-zonal (e.g., between rooms) ventilation is comprised of fresh air infiltration in and exfiltration out of the whole house plus the "fresh" air that is entering (and exiting) the room of interest from other rooms or areas within the house. Clearly, the inter-zone ventilation rate in any room of interest will be greater than the infiltration/exfiltration ventilation rate of outdoor air for the whole house. The purpose of this study is to determine how much greater the inter-zonal ventilation rate is in typical U.S. residences compared to the whole house ventilation rate from outdoor air. The data for this statistical analysis came from HouseDB, a 1995 EPA database of residential ventilation rates. Analytical results indicate that a lognormal distribution provides the best fit to the data. Lognormal probability distribution functions (PDFs) are provided for various inter-zonal ventilation rates for comparison to the PDF for the whole house ventilation rates. All ventilation rates are expressed as air change rates per hour (ACH). These PDFs can be used as inputs to exposure models. This analysis suggests that if one were performing a deterministic analysis for unknown housing stocks in the U.S., a default mean and median ACH values of 0.4/hr and 0.3/hr, respectively, for whole house ventilation would be appropriate; and 0.7/hr and 0.6/hr, respectively, for inter-zonal ventilation.

Development of a Portable Aerosol Collector and Spectrometer (PACS)

This article presents the development of a Portable Aerosol Collector and Spectrometer (PACS), an instrument designed to measure particle number, surface area, and mass concentrations continuously and time-weighted mass concentration by composition from 10 nm to 10 μm. The PACS consists of a six-stage particle size selector, a valve system, a water condensation particle counter to detect number concentrations, and a photometer to detect mass concentrations. The stages of the selector include three impactor and two diffusion stages, which resolve particles by size and collect particles for later chemical analysis. Particle penetration by size was measured through each stage to determine actual collection performance and account for particle losses. The data inversion algorithm uses an adaptive grid-search process with a constrained linear least-square solver to fit a tri-modal (ultrafine, fine, and coarse), log-normal distribution to the input data (number and mass concentration exiting each stage). The measured 50% cutoff diameter of each stage was similar to the design. The pressure drop of each stage was sufficiently low to permit its operation with portable air pumps. Sensitivity studies were conducted to explore the influence of unknown particle density (range from 500 to 3,000 kg/m3) and shape factor (range from 1.0 to 3.0) on algorithm output. Assuming standard density spheres, the aerosol size distributions fit well with a normalized mean bias of -4.9% to 3.5%, normalized mean error of 3.3% to 27.6%, and R 2 values of 0.90 to 1.00. The fitted number and mass concentration biases were within ±10% regardless of uncertainties in density and shape. However, fitted surface area concentrations were more likely to be underestimated/overestimated due to the variation in particle density and shape. The PACS represents a novel way to simultaneously assess airborne aerosol composition and concentration by number, surface area, and mass over a wide size range.

Exposure to Cooking Fumes and Acute Reversible Decrement in Lung Functional Capacity

Background:

Being exposed to cooking fumes, kitchen workers are occupationally at risk of multiple respiratory hazards. No conclusive evidence exists as to whether occupational exposure to these fumes is associated with acute and chronic pulmonary effects and symptoms of respiratory diseases.

Objective:

To quantify the exposure levels and evaluate possible chronic and acute pulmonary effects associated with exposure to cooking fumes.

Methods:

In this cross-sectional study, 60 kitchen workers exposed to cooking fumes and 60 unexposed employees were investigated. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms among these groups was determined through completion of a standard questionnaire. Pulmonary function parameters were also measured before and after participants' work shift. Moreover, air samples were collected and analyzed to quantify their aldehyde, particle, and volatile organic contents.

Results:

The mean airborne concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein was 0.45 (SD 0.41), 0.13 (0.1), and 1.56 (0.41) mg/m³, respectively. The mean atmospheric concentrations of PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₇, PM₁₀, and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) was 3.31 (2.6), 12.21 (5.9), 44.16 (16.6), 57 (21.55) µg/m³, and 1.31 (1.11) mg/m³, respectively. All respiratory symptoms were significantly (p<0.05) more prevalent in exposed group. No significant difference was noted between the pre-shift mean of spirometry parameters of exposed and unexposed group. However, exposed workers showed cross-shift decrease in most spirometry parameters, significantly lower than the pre-shift values and those of the comparison group.

Conclusion:

Exposure to cooking fumes is associated with a significant increase in the prevalence of respiratory symptoms as well as acute reversible decrease in lung functional capacity.

Isolation and characterization of a respirable particle fraction from residential house-dust

Indoor air pollution has caused increasing concern in recent years. As we spend most of our lives indoors, it is crucial to understand the health effects caused by indoor air pollution. Household dust serve as good proxy for accessing indoor air pollution, especially smaller dust particles that can pass into the lungs are of interest. In this study we present an efficient method for the isolation of dust particles in the respirable size range. The respirable fraction was recovered from vacuum cleaner bags, separated by stepwise sieving, followed by characterization for size, morphology, surface area, organic content and elemental composition. The respirable fraction was obtained in a yield of 0.6% with a specific surface area of 2.5m²/g and a Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter of 3.73 ± 0.15µm. Aluminum and zink were the dominating metals measured in the dust, whereas the major mineral components were found to be silicon dioxide and calcium carbonate. The fraction of organic matter in the dust was measured to be 69 ± 1%. The organic matrix contained bacterial and fungi and a presence of skin fragments. We present here an efficient and fast method for the isolation of dust particles in the respirable size range. That is of considerable value due to the need for large quantities of respirable particle fractions to conduct toxicological studies and risk assessment work.

Quantifying fine particle emission events from time-resolved measurements: Method description and application to 18 California low-income apartments

PM_2.5 exposure is associated with significant health risk. Exposures in homes derive from both outdoor and indoor sources, with emissions occurring primarily in discrete events. Data on emission event magnitudes and schedules are needed to support simulation-based studies of exposures and mitigations. This study applied an identification and characterization algorithm to quantify time-resolved PM_2.5 emission events from data collected during 224 days of monitoring in 18 California apartments with low-income residents. We identified and characterized 836 distinct events with median and mean values of 12 and 30 mg emitted mass, 16 and 23 minutes emission duration, 37 and 103 mg/h emission rates, and pseudo-first-order decay rates of 1.3 and 2.0/h. Mean event-averaged concentrations calculated using the determined event characteristics agreed to within 6% of measured values for 14 of the apartments. There were variations in event schedules and emitted mass across homes, with few events overnight and most emissions occurring during late afternoons and evenings. Event characteristics were similar during weekdays and weekends. Emitted mass was positively correlated with number of residents (Spearman coefficient, ρ=.10), bedrooms (ρ=.08), house volume (ρ=.29), and indoor-outdoor CO₂ difference (ρ=.27). The event schedules can be used in probabilistic modeling of PM_2.5 in low-income apartments.

Exploratory assessment of indoor and outdoor particle number concentrations in Hanoi households

No studies have been conducted in Vietnam to understand the levels of atmospheric ultrafine particles, despite having adverse health effects. Information about indoor air quality in Vietnam is also limited. Hence we aimed to conduct the first assessment of ultrafine particle concentrations in terms of particle number (PN) in Hanoi, by simultaneously measuring indoor and outdoor PN concentrations from six households at different locations across the city in January 2016. We also acquired PM_2.5 data for this monitoring period from an air quality monitoring station located at the US Embassy in Hanoi, to compare the general trends between PN and PM_2.5 concentrations. The mean daily indoor and outdoor PN concentrations for the monitoring period were 1.9×10⁴p/cm³ and 3.3×10⁴p/cm³, respectively, with an increase during rush hour traffic. It was concluded that traffic was the main contributor to outdoor PN concentrations, with agricultural burning having a small influence at one study location. The mean ratio of indoor to outdoor PN concentrations for all six sites was 0.66±0.26, which points to outdoor air as the main driver of indoor PN concentrations, rather than indoor sources. These PN concentrations and I/O ratios are similar to those reported for a number of cities in developed countries. However, in contrast to PN, ambient mean PM_2.5 concentrations in Hanoi (60-70μg/m³) were significantly higher than those typically recorded in developed countries. These findings demonstrate that urban particle mass (PM_2.5) concentrations are not indicative of the PN concentrations, which can be explained by different sources contributing to PN and PM, and that direct measurements of PN are necessary to provide information about population exposure to ultrafine particles and for management of air quality.
