Validation of Algorithm to Identify Persons with Non-traumatic Spinal Cord Dysfunction in Canada Using Administrative Health Data

Validated administrative data based ICD-10 algorithms for chronic conditions: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review aimed to identify ICD-10 based validated algorithms for chronic conditions using health administrative data.

METHODS

A comprehensive systematic literature search using Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science and CINAHL was performed to identify studies, published between 1983 and May 2023, on validated algorithms for chronic conditions using administrative health data. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts and reviewed full text of selected studies to complete data extraction. A third reviewer resolved conflicts arising at the screening or study selection stages. The primary outcome was validated studies of ICD-10 based algorithms with both sensitivity and PPV of ≥70 %. Studies with either sensitivity or PPV <70 % were included as secondary outcomes.

RESULTS

Overall, the search identified 1686 studies of which 54 met the inclusion criteria. Combining a previously published literature search, a total of 61 studies were included for data extraction. The study identified 40 chronic conditions with high validity and 22 conditions with moderate validity. The validated algorithms were based on administrative data from different countries including Canada, USA, Australia, Japan, France, South Korea, and Taiwan. The algorithms identified included several types of cancers, cardiovascular conditions, kidney diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and peripheral vascular diseases, amongst others.

CONCLUSION

With ICD-10 prominently used across the world, this up-to-date systematic review can prove to be a helpful resource for research and surveillance initiatives using administrative health data for identifying chronic conditions.

Poststroke Care Pathways and Spasticity Treatment: A Retrospective Study in Alberta

BACKGROUND

Limited evidence exists regarding care pathways for stroke survivors who do and do not receive poststroke spasticity (PSS) treatment.

METHODS

Administrative data was used to identify adults who experienced a stroke and sought acute care between 2012 and 2017 in Alberta, Canada. Pathways of stroke care within the health care system were determined among those who initiated PSS treatment (PSS treatment group: outpatient pharmacy dispensation of an anti-spastic medication, focal chemo-denervation injection, or a spasticity tertiary clinic visit) and those who did not (non-PSS treatment group). Time from the stroke event until spasticity treatment initiation, and setting where treatment was initiated were reported. Descriptive statistics were performed.

RESULTS

Health care settings within the pathways of stroke care that the PSS (n = 1,079) and non-PSS (n = 22,922) treatment groups encountered were the emergency department (86 and 84%), acute inpatient care (80 and 69%), inpatient rehabilitation (40 and 12%), and long-term care (19 and 13%), respectively. PSS treatment was initiated a median of 291 (interquartile range 625) days after the stroke event, and most often in the community when patients were residing at home (45%), followed by "other" settings (22%), inpatient rehabilitation (18%), long-term care (11%), and acute inpatient care (4%).

CONCLUSIONS

To our knowledge, this is the first population based cohort study describing pathways of care among adults with stroke who subsequently did or did not initiate spasticity treatment. Areas for improvement in care may include strategies for earlier identification and treatment of PSS.

Identifying Patterns of Primary Care Antibiotic Prescribing for a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Cohort Using an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Database

Background

Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are considered higher users of antibiotics. However, to date there have been no detailed studies investigating outpatient antibiotic use in this population.

Objectives

(1) To describe primary care antibiotic prescribing patterns in adults with SCI rostered to a primary care physician (PCP), and (2) to identify patient or PCP factors associated with number of antibiotics prescribed and antibiotic prescription duration.

Methods

A retrospective cohort study using linked health administrative and electronic medical records (EMR) databases from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2015 among 432 adults with SCI in Ontario, Canada. Negative binomial regression analyses were conducted to identify patient or physician factors associated with number of antibiotics prescribed and prescription duration.

Results

During the study period, 61.1% of the SCI cohort received an antibiotic prescription from their PCP. There were 59.8% of prescriptions for urinary tract infections (UTI) and 24.6% of prescriptions for fluoroquinolones. Regression analysis found catheter use was associated with increased number of antibiotics prescribed (relative risk [RR] = 3.1; 95% CI, 2.3-4.1; p < .001) and late career PCPs, compared to early-career PCPs, prescribed a significantly longer duration (RR = 1.8; 95% CI, 1.1-3.1; p = .02).

Conclusion

UTIs were the number one prescription indication, and fluoroquinolones were the most prescribed antibiotic. Catheter use was associated with number of antibiotics, and PCP's years of practice was associated with duration. The study provided important information about primary care antibiotic prescribing in the SCI population and found that not all individuals received frequent antibiotics prescriptions.

Epidemiology and healthcare utilization of First Nations peoples living with spinal cord injury in Alberta: an observational study to explore health inequities

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective observational cohort study.

OBJECTIVES

Estimate spinal cord injury (SCI) prevalence in First Nations and non-First Nations populations and compare healthcare utilization as an indirect marker of health inequities.

SETTING

Alberta, Canada.

METHODS

We created a prevalent adult SCI cohort by identifying cases between April 1, 2002 and December 31, 2017 who were followed for common SCI complications and location of healthcare access from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 using administrative data sources housed within Alberta Health Services (AHS). First Nations and non-First Nations SCI cohorts were divided into SCI etiology: traumatic SCI (TSCI) and non-traumatic SCI (NTSCI). Statistical analyses compared prevalence, demographics, healthcare utilization, and SCI complication rates. A secondary analysis was performed using case matching for demographics, injury type, injury level, and comorbidities.

RESULTS

TSCI prevalence: 248 and 117 per 100,000 in First Nations and non-First Nations cohorts, respectively. NTSCI prevalence: 74 and 50 per 100,000 in First Nations and non-First Nations cohorts, respectively. Visit rates were higher in the TSCI First Nations cohort for visits to General Practitioner (GP), Emergency Department (ED), inpatient visits, and inpatient days with higher complication rates due to pulmonary, genitourinary, skin, and 'other' causes after case matching. Visits rates were higher in the NTSCI First Nations cohort for GP and specialists without differences in complication types after case matching.

CONCLUSIONS

Significant differences exist between First Nations and non-First Nations cohorts living with SCI in Alberta, suggesting healthcare inequities against First Nations Peoples in this province.

Using Clinical Vignettes and a Modified Expert Delphi Panel to Determine Parameters for Identifying Non-Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in Health Administrative and Electronic Medical Record Databases

OBJECTIVE

To obtain expert consensus on the parameters and etiologic conditions required to retrospectively identify cases of non-traumatic spinal cord injury (NTSCI) in health administrative and electronic medical record (EMR) databases based on the rating of clinical vignettes.

DESIGN

A modified Delphi process included 2 survey rounds and 1 remote consensus panel. The surveys required the rating of clinical vignettes, developed after chart reviews and expert consultation. Experts who participated in survey rounds were invited to participate in the Delphi Consensus Panel.

SETTING

An international collaboration using an online meeting platform.

PARTICIPANTS

Thirty-one expert physicians and/or clinical researchers in the field of spinal cord injury (SCI).

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

Agreement on clinical vignettes as NTSCI. Parameters to classify cases of NTSCI in health administrative and EMR databases.

RESULTS

In health administrative and EMR databases, cauda equina syndromes should be considered SCI and classified as a NTSCI or TSCI based on the mechanism of injury. A traumatic event needs to be listed for injury to be considered TSCI. To be classified as NTSCI, neurologic sufficient impairments (motor, sensory, bowel, and bladder) are required, in addition to an etiology. It is possible to have both a NTSCI and a TSCI, as well as a recovered NTSCI. If information is unavailable or missing in health administrative and EMR databases, the case may be listed as "unclassifiable" depending on the purpose of the research study.

CONCLUSION

The Delphi panel provided guidelines to appropriately classify cases of NTSCI in health administrative and EMR databases.

Understanding challenges of using routinely collected health data to address clinical care gaps: a case study in Alberta, Canada

High-quality data are fundamental to healthcare research, future applications of artificial intelligence and advancing healthcare delivery and outcomes through a learning health system. Although routinely collected administrative health and electronic medical record data are rich sources of information, they have significant limitations. Through four example projects from the Physician Learning Program in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, we illustrate barriers to using routinely collected health data to conduct research and engage in clinical quality improvement. These include challenges with data availability for variables of clinical interest, data completeness within a clinical visit, missing and duplicate visits, and variability of data capture systems. We make four recommendations that highlight the need for increased clinical engagement to improve the collection and coding of routinely collected data. Advancing the quality and usability of health systems data will support the continuous quality improvement needed to achieve the quintuple aim.

Epidemiology of non-traumatic spinal cord injury in Ireland - a prospective population-based study

Objective: To carry out a study of non-traumatic spinal cord injury (NTSCI) epidemiology in IrelandDesign: Prospective study of all new incident cases of NTSCI during 2017Setting: Republic of IrelandParticipants: All persons with a newly acquired NTSCIInterventions: NoneOutcome measures: Crude and age/sex specific incidences; ISCoS core dataset and non-traumatic dataset; population denominator was 2016 national census figures, adjusted to 2017.Results: Overall crude incidence of NTSCI in the Republic of Ireland in 2017 was 26.9 per million per year. Mean age at onset was 56.6 (SD 17.7) years. Females accounted for 51.2% of cases. Most frequent grade of ASIA impairment scale (AIS) was AIS D. Most common etiology was degenerate conditions (48.8%) followed by neoplastic (26.4%). The most common pattern of onset (51.2%) was lengthy (greater than one month).Conclusions: Incidence of NTSCI is more than double that for traumatic SCI in the Republic of Ireland. This suggests that the delivery of rehabilitation services to patients with spinal cord injuries requires prompt review and expansion.

Identifying cases of spinal cord injury or disease in a primary care electronic medical record database

OBJECTIVE

To identify cases of spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) in an Ontario database of primary care electronic medical records (EMR).

DESIGN

A reference standard of cases of chronic SCI/D was established via manual review of EMRs; this reference standard was used to evaluate potential case identification algorithms for use in the same database.

SETTING

Electronic Medical Records Primary Care (EMRPC) Database, Ontario, Canada.

PARTICIPANTS

A sample of 48,000 adult patients was randomly selected from 213,887 eligible patients in the EMRPC database.

INTERVENTIONS

N/A.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

Candidate algorithms were evaluated using sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and F-score.

RESULTS

126 cases of chronic SCI/D were identified, forming the reference standard. Of these, 57 were cases of traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), and 67 were cases of non-traumatic spinal cord injury (NTSCI). The optimal case identification algorithm used free-text keyword searches and a physician billing code, and had 70.6% sensitivity (61.9-78.4), 98.5% specificity (97.3-99.3), 89.9% PPV (82.2-95.0), 94.7% NPV (92.8-96.3), and an F-score of 79.1.

CONCLUSIONS

Identifying cases of chronic SCI/D from a database of primary care EMRs using free-text entries is feasible, relying on a comprehensive case definition. Identifying a cohort of patients with SCI/D will allow for future study of the epidemiology and health service utilization of these patients.

Risk factors Associated with Long Term Mortality and Complications Following Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair

OBJECTIVE

To determine the risk factors associated with late mortality or complications (Thoracoabdominal aortic Aneurysm Life-altering Events (TALE): composite of mortality, permanent paraplegia, permanent dialysis, and stroke) in patients undergoing endovascular or open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair.

METHODS

Population-based study of patients undergoing TAAA repair in Ontario, Canada, between 2006 - 2017. The association of baseline risk factors with mortality post repair and complications was examined with Cox hazards models with hospital-specific random effects. The survival of patients undergoing TAAA repair was compared to matched controls who were free from TAAA, matching on age, sex, area of residence, and average annual household income. Type of repair (endovascular vs open) was included in all models.

RESULTS

We identified 664 adults (mean age 69.3 ± 10.6, 71% men) undergoing TAAA repair. At 5 and 8-years, survival was 55.0% (95% confidence interval (CI) 49.8-60.1) and 44.6% (95% CI 40.4-49.6) for patients undergoing TAAA repair vs 85.6% (95% CI 83.9-87.1) and 76.3% (95% CI 73.8-78.8) for the control population, respectively ((HR 1.97, 95% CI 1.67-2.32, p<.01). In patients undergoing TAAA, freedom from TALE was 49.2% (95% CI 44.7-53.7) and 37.3% (95% CI 33.1- 42.4) at 5 and 8-years of follow-up, respectively. On multivariable analysis, risk factors associated with mortality during follow-up included older age (hazard ratio (HR) 1.21 (per 5-year increase), 95%CI 1.13-1.28), peripheral artery disease (HR 1.46, 95%CI 1.03-2.09), hypertension (HR 1.58, 95%CI 1.03-2.43), congestive heart failure (HR 1.78, 95%CI 1.34-2.36), and urgent procedures (HR 2.27, 95%CI 1.74-3.00). A lower rate of death was observed in those with previous coronary revascularization (HR 0.63, 95%CI 0.41-0.96) and repair at high-volume institutions (>60 TAAA repairs during the study period) (HR 0.71, 95%CI 0.55-0.91). Older age, chronic kidney disease, congestive heart failure, and urgent procedures were associated with higher rate of TALE. The type of repair (endovascular or open) was not associated with mortality or TALE.

CONCLUSIONS

TAAA repair is associated with reduced long-term survival compared to the general population regardless of mode of treatment. Urgent/emergent repair was the most profound risk factor late adverse events. Type of repair (endovascular or open) was not a predictor for long-term death or complications. Previous coronary revascularization and having the procedure performed at a high-volume institution were associated with improved late outcomes in patients undergoing TAAA repair.

Development of Reaching, Grasping & Manipulation indicators to advance the quality of spinal cord injury rehabilitation: SCI-High Project

OBJECTIVE

To describe the development of structure, process, and outcome indicators aimed to advance the quality of Reaching, Grasping & Manipulation (RG&M) rehabilitation for Canadians living with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D).

METHOD

Upper extremity rehabilitation experts developed a framework of indicators for evaluation of RG&M rehabilitation quality. A systematic search of the literature identified potential upper extremity indicators that influence RG&M outcomes. A Driver diagram summarized factors influencing upper extremity outcomes to inform the selection of structure and process indicators. Psychometric properties, clinical utility, and feasibility of potential upper extremity measures were considered when selecting outcome indicators.

RESULTS

The selected structure indicator is the number of occupational and physical therapists with specialized certification, education, training and/or work experience in upper extremity therapy related to RG&M at a given SCI/D rehabilitation center. The process indicator is the total hours of upper extremity therapies related to RG&M and the proportion of this time allocated to neurorestorative therapy for each individual with tetraplegia receiving therapy. The outcome indicators are the Graded Redefined Assessment of Strength, Sensation and Prehension (GRASSP) strength and Spinal Cord Independence Measure III (SCIM III) Self-Care subscores implemented at rehabilitation admission and discharge, and SCIM III Self-Care subscore only at 18 months post-admission.

CONCLUSION

The selected indicators align with current practice, will direct the timing of routine assessments, and enhance the volume and quality of RG&M therapy delivered, with the aim to ultimately increase the proportion of individuals with tetraplegia achieving improved upper extremity function by 18 months post-rehabilitation.

Routinely collected patient data in neurology research: a systematic mapping review

BACKGROUND

This review focuses on neurology research which uses routinely collected data. The number of such studies is growing alongside the expansion of data collection. We aim to gain a broad picture of the scope of how routine healthcare data have been utilised.

METHODS

This study follows a systematic mapping review approach which does not make a judgement on the quality of the papers included in the review, thereby enabling a complete overview of the field.

RESULTS

Of 4481 publications retrieved, 386 met the eligibility criteria for this study. These publications covered a wide range of conditions, but the majority were based on one or only a small number of neurological conditions. In particular, publications concerned with three discrete areas of neurological practice - multiple sclerosis (MS), epilepsy/seizure and Parkinson's disease - accounted for 60% of the total. MS was the focus of the highest proportion of eligible studies (35%), yet in the recent Global Burden of Neurological Disease study it ranks only 14th out of 15 neurological disorders for DALY rates. In contrast, migraine is the neurological disorder with the highest ranking of DALYs globally (after stroke) and yet it was represented by only 4% of eligible studies.

CONCLUSION

This review shows that there is a disproportionately large body of literature pertaining to relatively rare disorders, and a correspondingly small body of literature describing more common conditions. Therefore, there is potential for future research to redress this balance.

A Narrative Review of Pediatric Nontraumatic Spinal Cord Dysfunction

This article provides a narrative review of seven key issues relevant to pediatric onset of spinal cord damage not due to trauma, or spinal cord dysfunction (SCDys). The first topic discussed is terminology issues. There is no internationally accepted term for spinal cord damage not due to trauma. The implications of this terminology issue and an approach to addressing this are discussed. Second, a brief history of SCDys is presented, focusing on conditions relevant to pediatrics. Third, the classification of SCDys is outlined, based on the International Spinal Cord Injury Data Sets for Non-Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury. Following this, a summary is given of the epidemiology of pediatric SCDys, primarily focused on the incidence, prevalence, and etiology, with a comparison to traumatic spinal cord injury. Next, important clinical rehabilitation principles unique to children with SCDys are highlighted. Then important prevention opportunities for SCDys in children are discussed. Finally, trends, challenges, and opportunities regarding research in SCDys are mentioned.

Outcomes after endovascular versus open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair: A population-based study

OBJECTIVE

We sought to determine the early and late outcomes of endovascular versus open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

METHODS

We performed a multicenter population-based study across the province of Ontario, Canada, from 2006 to 2017. The primary end point was mortality. Secondary end points were time to first event of a composite of mortality, permanent spinal cord injury, permanent dialysis, and stroke, the individual end points of the composite, patient disposition at discharge, hospital length of stay, myocardial infarction, and secondary procedures at follow-up.

RESULTS

A total of 664 adults undergoing surgical repair of a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (endovascular: n = 303 [45.5%] vs open: n = 361 [54.5%]) were identified using an algorithm of administrative codes validated against the operative records. Propensity score matching resulted in 241 patient pairs. Endovascular repairs increased during the study and currently comprise more than 50% of total repairs. In the matched sample, open repair was associated with a higher incidence of in-hospital death (17.4% vs 10.8%, P = .04), complications (26.1% vs 17.4%, P = .02), discharge to rehabilitation facilities (18.7% vs 10.0%, P = .02), and longer length of stay (12 [7-21] vs 6 [3-13] days, P < .01). Long-term mortality was not significantly different (hazard ratio, 1.09; 95% confidence interval, 0.78-1.50), nor were the other secondary end points, with the exception of secondary procedures, which were higher in the endovascular group (hazard ratio, 2.64; 95% confidence interval, 1.54-4.55). At 8 years, overall survival was 41.3% versus 44.6% after endovascular and open repair (P = .62).

CONCLUSIONS

Endovascular repair was associated with improved early outcomes but higher rates of secondary procedures after discharge. Long-term survival after thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair is poor and independent of repair technique.

Methods for development of structure, process and outcome indicators for prioritized spinal cord injury rehabilitation Domains: SCI-High Project

Background: High-quality rehabilitation care following spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) is critical for optimizing neurorecovery and long-term health outcomes. This manuscript describes the methods used for developing, refining, and implementing a framework of structure, process, and outcome indicators that reflect high-quality rehabilitation among adults with SCI/D in Canada. Methods: This quality improvement initiative was comprised of the following processes: (1) prioritization of care Domains by key stakeholders (scientists, clinicians, therapists, patients and stakeholder organizations); (2) assembly of 11 Domain-specific Working Groups including 69 content experts; (3) conduct of literature searches, guideline and best practice reviews, and outcome synthesis by the Project Team; (4) refinement of Domain aim and construct definitions; (5) conduct of cause and effect analysis using Driver diagrams; (6) selection and development of structure, process and outcome indicators; (7) piloting and feasibility analysis of indicators and associated evaluation tools; and, (8) dissemination of the proposed indicators. Result: The Project Team established aims, constructs and related structure, process, and outcome indicators to facilitate uniform measurement and benchmarking across 11 Domains of rehabilitation, at admission and for 18 months thereafter, among adult Canadians by 2020. Conclusion: These processes led to the selection of a feasible set of indicators that once implemented should ensure that adults with SCI/D receive timely, safe, and effective rehabilitation services. These indicators can be used to assess health system performance, monitor the quality of care within and across rehabilitation settings, and evaluate the rehabilitation outcomes of the population to ultimately enhance healthcare quality and equity.

Projection Word Embedding Model With Hybrid Sampling Training for Classifying ICD-10-CM Codes: Longitudinal Observational Study

BACKGROUND

Most current state-of-the-art models for searching the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes use word embedding technology to capture useful semantic properties. However, they are limited by the quality of initial word embeddings. Word embedding trained by electronic health records (EHRs) is considered the best, but the vocabulary diversity is limited by previous medical records. Thus, we require a word embedding model that maintains the vocabulary diversity of open internet databases and the medical terminology understanding of EHRs. Moreover, we need to consider the particularity of the disease classification, wherein discharge notes present only positive disease descriptions.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to propose a projection word2vec model and a hybrid sampling method. In addition, we aimed to conduct a series of experiments to validate the effectiveness of these methods.

METHODS

We compared the projection word2vec model and traditional word2vec model using two corpora sources: English Wikipedia and PubMed journal abstracts. We used seven published datasets to measure the medical semantic understanding of the word2vec models and used these embeddings to identify the three-character-level ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes in a set of discharge notes. On the basis of embedding technology improvement, we also tried to apply the hybrid sampling method to improve accuracy. The 94,483 labeled discharge notes from the Tri-Service General Hospital of Taipei, Taiwan, from June 1, 2015, to June 30, 2017, were used. To evaluate the model performance, 24,762 discharge notes from July 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017, from the same hospital were used. Moreover, 74,324 additional discharge notes collected from seven other hospitals were tested. The F-measure, which is the major global measure of effectiveness, was adopted.

RESULTS

In medical semantic understanding, the original EHR embeddings and PubMed embeddings exhibited superior performance to the original Wikipedia embeddings. After projection training technology was applied, the projection Wikipedia embeddings exhibited an obvious improvement but did not reach the level of original EHR embeddings or PubMed embeddings. In the subsequent ICD-10-CM coding experiment, the model that used both projection PubMed and Wikipedia embeddings had the highest testing mean F-measure (0.7362 and 0.6693 in Tri-Service General Hospital and the seven other hospitals, respectively). Moreover, the hybrid sampling method was found to improve the model performance (F-measure=0.7371/0.6698).

CONCLUSIONS

The word embeddings trained using EHR and PubMed could understand medical semantics better, and the proposed projection word2vec model improved the ability of medical semantics extraction in Wikipedia embeddings. Although the improvement from the projection word2vec model in the real ICD-10-CM coding task was not substantial, the models could effectively handle emerging diseases. The proposed hybrid sampling method enables the model to behave like a human expert.

Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities Regarding Research in Non-traumatic Spinal Cord Dysfunction

Background: Spinal cord dysfunction (SCDys) is caused by heterogeneous health conditions, and the incidence is increasing. Despite the growing interest in rehabilitation research for SCDys, research into SCDys faces many challenges. Objective: The objective of this project was to perform a clinical review of changes in SCDys research over the last 4 decades; identify challenges to conducting research in SCDys; and propose opportunities for improving research in SCDys. Methods: A triangulation approach was used for obtaining evidence: literature search (January 2017) using MEDLINE and Embase databases for publications in English (1974-2016) regarding SCDys; workshop discussions at the International Spinal Cord Society annual meeting, September 16, 2016, Vienna, Austria; and our collective expertise in SCDys clinical rehabilitation research. Results: There has been a substantial increase in publications on SCDys over the 4 decades, from 1,825 in 1974-1983 to 11,887 in the decade 2004-2013, along with an improvement in research methodology. Numerous challenges to research in SCDys rehabilitation were grouped into the following themes: (a) identification of cases; (b) study design and data collection; and (c) funding, preclinical, and international research. Opportunities for addressing these were identified. Conclusions: The increase in scientific publications on SCDys highlights the importance of this heterogeneous group among the research community. The overall lack of good quality epidemiological studies regarding incidence, prevalence, and survival in these patients serves as a benchmark for guiding improvements to inform evidence-based care and policy.
