Abstract
BACKGROUND Falls are a major health problem. The relationship between dynamic balance related to falls and respiratory muscle strength related to sarcopenia and frailty is poorly understood. RESEARCH QUESTION How do dynamic balance measures, such as maximal single step length test (MSL) and maximal double step length test (MDST), and respiratory muscle strength measures, such as maximal inspiratory (PImax) and maximal expiratory (PEmax), related to the requirement for long-term care or support in older people who live in the community? METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 39 older people (17 men, 22 women) aged ≥ 65 years community-dwelling who were certified as requiring long-term care or support under the Japanese system. The participants' PImax, PEmax, MSL, and MDST results were recorded. The measurement data were evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS MDST showed a positive correlation with PImax (r = 0.430, p = 0.006) but no correlation with PEmax. MSL showed no correlation with PImax or PEmax. A positive correlation was found between MDST and MSL (r = 0.851, p < 0.001), and multiple regression analysis with MDST as the dependent variable and PImax and MST as independent variables showed significant differences for MSL (p < 0.001) and PImax (p = 0.027). SIGNIFICANCE In older people requiring long-term care or support, MDST had a greater association with inspiratory muscle strength compared with MSL. These results suggest the importance of inspiratory muscle strength training and MDST assessment in the prevention of falls in older people requiring long-term care or support.

Abstract
Background Focusing on the relationship between frail older people and gait speed is vital to minimize the need for long-term care or increased support. The relationship between gait speed, respiratory muscle strength, and dynamic balance, is not well understood in older people requiring long-term care or support. Therefore, this study aimed to provide new insights into the relationship between gait speed, respiratory muscle strength, and dynamic balance in community-dwelling older people who required long-term care or support and used a daycare center. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 49 community-dwelling older people (21 men, 28 women) aged ≥65 years who were certified as requiring long-term care or support under the Japanese system. The participants' maximal inspiratory pressure (PImax), maximal expiratory pressure (PEmax), walking speed (maximal and normal walking speed), and maximal double-step length test (MDST) results were recorded. The measurement data were evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results Pearson's correlation coefficient revealed correlations between PImax and the following: maximal walking speed (r = 0.606, p < 0.001), normal walking speed (r = 0.487, p < 0.001), and MDST (r = 0.435, p = 0.002). Correlations were also observed between PEmax and the following: maximal walking speed (r = 0.522, p < 0.001), normal walking speed (r = 0.467, p < 0.001), and MDST (r = 0.314, p = 0.028). Moreover, a correlation was found between MDST and both maximal walking speed and (r = 0.684, p < 0.001) and normal walking speed (r = 0.649, p < 0.001). The effect size was 0.379. Multiple regression analysis using a forced entry method with maximal walking speed as the dependent variable showed that maximal walking speed was significantly associated with MDST (p < 0.001) and PEmax (p = 0.036), with an effect size of 0.272. The model's adjusted coefficient of determination was 0.593 (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis using a forced entry method with normal walking speed as the dependent variable showed that normal walking speed was significantly associated with MDST (p < 0.001) and PEmax (p = 0.021), with an effect size of 0.272. The model's adjusted coefficient of determination was 0.497 (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis using a forced entry method with MDST as the dependent variable showed that MDST was significantly associated with PImax (p < 0.025), with an effect size of 0.243. The model's adjusted coefficient of determination was 0.148 (p = 0.017). Conclusions Respiratory muscle strength and dynamic balance were related to walking speed in older people requiring long-term care or support.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to test the effect of Otago exercises on fear of falling, balance, empowerment and functional mobility in older people living in nursing homes. METHODS This study is a parallel-group randomized controlled trial. In total, 56 individuals were stratified randomized according to age-gender. Participants were recruited from September 2021 to August 2022. Data were collected at baseline, in the 8th and 12th weeks. The researcher gave Otago exercise training to the intervention group three times per week for the first 4 weeks and applied it to the individuals, and in the next 8 weeks, the researcher visited the institution to ensure the continuity of the exercises and contacted the individuals by phone. Friedman test and generalized linear model were used in the analysis of data. RESULTS In the study, group and time interaction were found to be significant in terms of the Berg balance scale, 30-second sit-and-stand test, elderly empowerment scale and timed up-and-go test. It was determined that the intervention did not improve fear of falling, upper extremity strength and 6-min walk test results. CONCLUSION Health personnel and administrators should have increased awareness about Otago exercises and can recommend implementation of the programme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty is a well-recognized risk factor for adverse health-related outcomes in aging population. However, little is known about the dynamic changing nature of frailty and the potential for it to be modified within the scope of exercise. Currently, there has not been a systematic review of the impact of Otago exercise program (OEP) implementation specifically for the frail or pre-frail older adults. OBJECTIVE To determine the effectiveness of Otago exercise program on the degree of frailty, physical balance ability, mobility, grip strength and health-related quality of life in older adults with frailty or pre-frailty. METHODS We conducted literature searching in seven electronic databases, as well as hand-search of reference of included studies from inception to December 2022. Eligible studies included clinical trials of pre-frail or frail elderly receiving OEP interventions reporting on the relevant outcomes. The effect size was evaluated using standardized mean differences (SMDs) and its 95% confidence interval with random effects models. Risk of bias was appraised independently by two authors. RESULTS 10 trials containing 8 RCTs and 2 non-RCTs studies were included. Five studies were evaluated with some concerns in the evidence quality. The results showed that the OEP intervention could possibly reduce the level of frailty (SMD=-1.14, 95% CI: -1.68∼-0.06, P < 0.01) and improve the mobility (SMD=-2.15, 95% CI: -3.35∼-0.94, P < 0.01) and physical balance ability (SMD=2.59, 95% CI: 1.07-4.11), P = 0.01), and enhance their grip strength (SMD=1.68, 95% CI=0.05∼3.31, P = 0.04). However, no statistically significant effect of OEP on quality of life (SMD=-1.517, 95% CI=-3.18∼0.15, P = 0.07) in frail elderly was found based on the current evidence. The subgroup analysis indicated that participant age, different intervention total duration and per min of each session have varying degrees of impact on frail or pre-frail older people. CONCLUSIONS The OEP intervention targeting older adults with frailty or pre-frailty are effective in reducing frailty, improving physical balance ability, mobility, and grip strength with low to moderate certainty. More rigorous and tailored research are still needed in the future to further enrich the evidence in these fields.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has been widely used in both healthy and diseased populations especially in older adults, and its effects have been proven not only on inspiratory muscle strength but also on dyspnea, exercise capacity, quality of life, and other health parameters. AIM This study aims to review the effects of IMT on balance and functional ability of healthy and diseased populations. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted on MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Randomized control trials having participants > 18 years of age and having balance and functional mobility as primary or secondary outcomes were included. Two independent reviewers screened studies against the eligibility criteria, extracted the data, and assessed the quality of evidence. The protocol was prospectively registered on PROSPERO: CRD42021261652. RESULTS Ten studies were included in the review out of which eight had balance and six had functional mobility as an outcome measure. There was a significant improvement in balance of the participants after treatment with IMT, however the effect on functional mobility was inconclusive. CONCLUSION The review provided evidence of improvement in balance and functional mobility following inspiratory muscle training in both healthy and diseased adults. Future studies should be conducted to determine the optimal protocol and dosage of treatment.

Abstract
Respiratory function has become a global health priority. Not only is chronic respiratory disease a leading cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality, but the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened attention on respiratory health and the means of enhancing it. Subsequently, and inevitably, the respiratory system has become a target of the multi-trillion-dollar health and wellness industry. Numerous commercial, respiratory-related interventions are now coupled to therapeutic and/or ergogenic claims that vary in their plausibility: from the reasonable to the absurd. Moreover, legitimate and illegitimate claims are often conflated in a wellness space that lacks regulation. The abundance of interventions, the range of potential therapeutic targets in the respiratory system, and the wealth of research that varies in quality, all confound the ability for health and exercise professionals to make informed risk-to-benefit assessments with their patients and clients. This review focuses on numerous commercial interventions that purport to improve respiratory health, including nasal dilators, nasal breathing, and systematized breathing interventions (such as pursed-lips breathing), respiratory muscle training, canned oxygen, nutritional supplements, and inhaled L-menthol. For each intervention we describe the premise, examine the plausibility, and systematically contrast commercial claims against the published literature. The overarching aim is to assist health and exercise professionals to distinguish science from pseudoscience and make pragmatic and safe risk-to-benefit decisions.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the effects of interaction between several breathing patterns and postures on abdominal muscle activation and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). This comparative cross-sectional study enrolled fourteen healthy university students majoring in sports science and/or physical education. They performed four active breathing tasks: quiet nasal breathing (Q-Bre), nasal deep breathing (Deep-Bre), completely forced expiration (Forced-Expi), and exertional nasal inhalation with abdominal muscles with isometric contraction (Exertion-Inspi) in the elbow-toe plank and supine postures. Breathing volume; IAP; and transverse abdominis-internal oblique muscle (TrA-IO) and external oblique muscle (EO) activities were recorded. Abdominal muscle activity and IAP significantly interacted with breathing pattern and postures during the expiratory phase (p < 0.05). In the inspiratory phase, TrA-IO activity was significantly affected by breathing pattern and EO activity with posture (p < 0.05). TrA-IO activity significantly increased during Forced-Expi in the supine posture (47.6% of the maximum voluntary contraction) and Exertion-Inspi in the elbow-toe posture (35.7%), whereas no differences were found during Deep-Bre or Q-Bre (< 20%). EO activity increased in the elbow-toe posture (22.5-30.6%) compared with that in the supine posture (< 5%) during all breathing tasks. IAP values were low during all tasks (< 15%) except for Forced-Expi (24.9%). Abdominal muscle activation and IAP interacted with the breathing pattern and posture.

Abstract
Prolonged periods of sitting at work can increase trunk muscle fatigue from the continuous contraction of deep trunk muscles. Insufficient activity of these muscles can decrease muscular support to the spine and increases stress on its passive structures. This can lead to reduced spinal mobility and impaired postural stability. It may also stimulate nociceptor activity leading to pain. However, frequently used recovery modalities such as muscle strengthening and stretching exercises, can be time-consuming, impractical, and difficult to implement in the workplace. Diaphragmatic breathing exercises, which increase the activity of the deep trunk muscles by raising intra-abdominal pressure, seem to be a suitable alternative. However, little is known as to what extent diaphragmatic breathing exercises contribute to the reduction of fatigue induced by prolonged sitting. This paper presents a study protocol that aims to investigate the acute effect of diaphragmatic breathing exercises on recovery of fatigue-induced changes in spinal mobility and postural stability in sedentary middle-aged adults at risk of developing non-specific low back pain. Twenty sedentary adults aged between 25 and 44 years will perform Abt's fatigue protocol, followed by 1) active recovery using diaphragmatic breathing exercises and 2) passive recovery in the form of lying on the bed, respectively. There will be 1 week of rest in-between. Pre-fatigue, post-fatigue, and after the active and passive recovery, spinal mobility and postural stability will be evaluated using the spinal mouse device and a posturography system, respectively. The electromyography will be used to determine the muscle-fatigue conditions. We hypothesize that active recovery in a form of diaphragmatic breathing exercises would be more effective in restoring spinal mobility and postural stability followed by the fatigue of back and hamstring muscles compared to passive recovery in sedentary adults. Increasing core and respiratory muscle strength via these exercises could be beneficial for overall mobility and stability of the spine. Reducing compressive stress on the passive structures of the spine may be also beneficial for lowering low back pain. Therefore, we believe that diaphragmatic breathing exercises have the possibility to be incorporated into the workplace and contribute to better back health in sedentary middle-aged adults. Abstract
PURPOSE Postural control impairment has been identified as a potential extrarespiratory manifestation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aims of this study were to identify clinical factors that characterize patients with reduced postural control, to examine the correlation between clinical factors and postural control and to determine predictors of an impaired postural control among COPD participants enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) program. METHODS This study is a secondary analysis of an observational study (PARACHUTE). The baseline assessment of the PR program was used for the analysis. Postural control impairment was defined using the Brief BESTest score (BBT). RESULTS Participants (n = 73) were included in the analysis, 43 of them were classified in the reduced postural control group. The between-group comparison (non-reduced vs reduced postural control) identified differences for partial pressure in oxygen (Pa O2 ), Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) total score and subscores (SGRQ-Symptoms, SGRQ-Activities, and SGRQ-Impact), COPD assessment test (CAT), and anxiety score of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The BBT score was significantly correlated with maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), SGRQ, SGRQ-Symptoms, SGRQ-Impact, Falls Efficacy Scale, modified Medical Research Council Scale, 6-min walk test, and Pa O2 . Logistic regression identified SGRQ-Symptoms, Pa O2 , MIP, and body mass index (BMI) as predictors of the presence of reduced postural control. CONCLUSION Low quality of life (QoL) and Pa O2 and high anxiety seem to be discriminative characteristics of patients with COPD with reduced postural control. Furthermore, QoL, Pa O2 , inspiratory muscle strength, and BMI seem to be acceptable predictors of the presence of postural control impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is scarce evidence on changes at the functional level associated with the respiratory area in women. This study aims to analyse the relationship between inspiratory muscle strength and balance in women. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross-sectional observational study, the sample consisted of groups according to the results obtained in the balance test. Inspiratory muscle weakness was defined as maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) ≤ 80% of the predictive value. MIP was carried out using through a mouthpiece, with an electronic manometer. Logistic regression model was used to examine if MIP predicts balance. RESULTS 159 women participated in the study. Approximately 20% of them achieved balance ≤ 2 seconds and 18% presented MIP≤80%. MIP was associated with the time achieved in the one-leg support test. Subjects with MIP ≤ 80% of the predictive value show 3 times more risk of having a lower performance in the balance test (OR = 3.26). CONCLUSIONS Inspiratory muscle weakness is associated with deficient balance in this sample. It shows the need for multidimensional assessment and rehabilitation strategies for patients identified as having MIP weakness and/or balance disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Because of its high prevalence and association with negative health-related outcomes, frailty is considered one of the most important issues associated with human aging and its mitigation is among the essential public health goals for the 21st century. However, very few studies have focused on institutionalized older adults, despite the knowledge that frailty can be reversible when identified and treated from its earliest stages. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a supervised group-based multicomponent exercise program intervention with or without oral nutritional supplementation on functional performance in frail institutionalized older adults. METHODS This was a multicenter randomized controlled trial study with a 6-month intervention period. A total of 111 frail institutionalized older adults (75 years or older) who met at least 3 of the 5 Fried frailty criteria were randomly allocated to the control group (CG; n = 34, mean age = 87.3 ± 5.3 years), a supervised group-based multicomponent Otago Exercise Program group (OEP; n = 39, mean age = 86 ± 5.9 years), or a supervised group-based multicomponent exercise program intervention with oral nutritional supplementation (OEP+N; n = 38, mean age = 84.9 ± 6 years). Measurements included the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Short Physical Performance Battery, repeated chair stand test (STS-5), handgrip strength (HGS), 10-m walking test, and 6-minute walking test, both at baseline and after the 6-month intervention period. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The between-group analysis by 2-way analysis of covariance showed significant improvement in the TUG [{OEP vs CG: -8.2 seconds, 95% CI [-13.3 to -2.9]; P < .001}; {OEP vs OEP+N: -7.3 seconds, 95% CI [-12.4 to -2.2]; P = .002}], BBS [{OEP vs CG; 8.2 points, 95% CI [5.2 to 11.2]; P < .001}; [{OEP+N vs CG: 4.6 points, 95% CI [1.6 to 7.6]; P < .001}; {OEP vs OEP+N: 3.5 points, 95% CI [0.6 to 6.5]; P = .011}], and HGS [{OEP vs CG: 3.4 kg, 95% CI [1.5 to 5.3]; P < .001}; {OEP+N vs CG: 3.6 kg, 95% CI [1.7 to 5.5]; P < .001}]. Additionally, the within-group analysis showed a significant improvement in the TUG (-6.9 seconds, 95% CI [-9.8 to -4.0]; P < .001) and BBS (4.3 points, 95% CI [2.6 to 5.9]; P < .001) in the OEP group. A significant decrease in the BBS and HGS was shown in the CG. CONCLUSIONS A 6-month supervised group-based multicomponent exercise intervention improved the levels of mobility, functional balance, and HGS in frail institutionalized older adults. Further research will be required to evaluate the nutritional supplementation effects on functional performance to better determine its clinical applicability for tackling frailty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the effects of a group-based Otago exercise program (OEP) on physical function (mobility, balance, lower limb strength), frailty and health status in older nursing home residents to determine the optimal scheme and format. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate group-based OEP effects. Subgroup analysis was performed to identify the influences of the participant and intervention characteristics on the effects. RESULTS Twelve studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in this meta-analysis, and the overall quality was relatively high. The results showed that the group-based OEP significantly improved physical function, including mobility [SMD=-0.64, 95% CI (-0.83,-0.45), Z=6.55, p<0.001], balance [MD=4.72, 95% CI (3.54, 5.90), Z=7.84, p<0.001], lower limb strength [SMD=-1.09, 95% CI (-1.40, -0.79), Z=7.01, p<0.001]; frailty [SMD=-0.73, 95% CI (-1.01, -0.45), Z=5.13, p<0.001] and health status [SMD=0.47, 95% CI (0.20, 0.74), Z=3.44, p=0.0006]. Subgroup analysis revealed that 30-minute sessions were more beneficial for improving balance than >30-minute sessions (p=0.0004). The training was coordinated with physiotherapists, who were more skilled at improving mobility than providing health training education (p=0.04). CONCLUSIONS Group-based OEP is helpful for improving physical function, frailty and health status in older nursing home residents. Specifically, 30-minute sessions and coordinating with physiotherapists may be the most appropriate and effective options.

Abstract
Objective To improve the quality of life of older adult in their later years, by increasing the physical activity participation of older adult, the occurrence of falls accident scores in older adult can be prevented. This paper comprehensively summarizes the origin, development, participation forms, and fitness effects of the Otago exercise program (OEP). Methods Using PubMed, web of science, CNKI, dimensional spectrum, and other databases, search for research papers from 2005 to April 2021 by using keywords such as Otago project exercise; aged, Fall; Cognitive function, Balance ability, Lower limb strength, Fall efficiency, and so on. PEDro Scale was used to check the quality of the literatures. Results A total of 34 papers were included after searching for kinds of literature related to the subject of this paper and after careful review by researchers. Conclusions Otago exercise programme is beneficial to improve the cognitive function of older adult, enhance their lower limb muscle strength and dynamic and static balance ability, and then improve the gait stability and posture control ability of older adult, which has significant positive benefits for the prevention of falls in older adult. OEP is helpful to improve the falling efficiency of older adult, help older adult overcome the fear of falling, and form a positive emotion of "exercise improves exercise," to reduce the harm caused by sedentary behavior and the incidence of depression and improve their subjective wellbeing. Although OEP has significant positive effects on improving the health and physical fitness of older adult, preventing falls, and restoring clinical function, the corresponding neural mechanism for preventing falls is not very clear. At the same time, how OEP can be combined with emerging technologies to maximize its benefits needs to be further discussed in the future.

Abstract
This study investigated the balance and dorsiflexion strength of older adults after eight weeks of resistance training, with the exercise velocity cadenced by the Pilates breathing technique and the volume modulated by the session duration. Forty-four older adults were divided into two groups: resistance training (TR; n = 22) and resistance training with the Pilates breathing technique cadencing all exercises (TR + P; n = 22), both during eight weeks. The total exercising volume was controlled by time of execution (50 min/session). The dorsiflexion strength and balance were assessed. The RT group showed higher dorsiflexion strength after the protocol: Right (RT = 29.1 ± 7.7 vs. RT + P = 22.9 ± 5.2, p = 0.001) and Left (RT = 29.5 ± 6.9 vs. RT + P = 24.0 ± 5.2, p = 0.001). All balance parameters were improved in RT + P group compared to its own baseline: Path Length (cm) (pre = 71.0 ± 14.3 vs. post = 59.7 ± 14.3, p = 0.003); Sway Velocity (cm/s) (pre = 3.6 ± 0.7; post = 2.9 ± 0.7; p = 0.001); Sway Area (cm2) (pre = 8.9 ± 5.3 vs. post = 5.7 ± 2.1, p = 0.003); Excursion Medio Lateral (cm) (pre = 3.0 ± 0.7 vs. post = 2.6 ± 0.5 cm, p = 0.002); and Excursion AP (cm) (pre = 3.6 ± 1.4 vs. post = 2.8 ± 0.7 cm, p = 0.010). Resistance training using slower velocity movement cadenced by Pilates breathing technique produced balance improvements compared to baseline (moderate to large effect sizes), but no between-group effect was observed at the end of the protocol. The dorsiflexion strength was higher in the RT group compared to RT + P group.

Abstract
Preliminary studies have reported that motor control is negatively impacted following an infection of COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on maintaining balance in highly skilled athletes. As part of a larger investigation that was initiated in 2019, twelve professional handball players were recruited to participate in a study that was designed to measure static balance performance. Following the initial pre-test, six participants (body height 184.8 ± 4.7 cm; body weight 85.5 ± 3.3 kg; age 21.3 ± 1.2 years) were infected with COVID-19. The remaining six participants (body height 188.7 ± 2.6 cm; body weight 92.3 ± 3.7 kg; age 26.3 ± 3.3 years) never tested positive for COVID-19 and were presumably not infected with the virus. The experimental design required all the participants to complete an initial balance assessment (pre-test) and a later balance assessment (post-test). To fully analyze our data, we conducted a 2 (condition: COVID, no-COVID) X 2 (test: pre-test, post-test) ANOVA with repeated measures on the second factor. Our analysis revealed that the skilled athletes who contracted COVID-19 had a significant decrease in balance performance from the pre-test that occurred prior to being infected with COVID-19 relative to the post-test that occurred following the COVID-19 infection. Additionally, the skilled athletes who were not infected with COVID-19 did not demonstrate the same deterioration in balance performance in the same period. This study highlights the impact COVID-19 has on static balance performance in a group of highly skilled handball players. Longitudinal studies are needed to fully understand the lasting impacts COVID-19 has on motor behavior.

IMT + WBV group received 12 weeks of both trainings, whereas IMTsham + WVB received 12 weeks of WBV alone. Sham group received 12 weeks of IMT with a low fixed load and were positioned at the vibratory platform without therapeutic effect. Participants were evaluated before and after the intervention for the following outcomes: 6-min walk test distance (6MWD), balance using Tinetti test, functional mobility using timed up and go test (TUG), handgrip strength (HGS) and peripheral muscle metabolism (glucose and lactate levels). RESULTS after the training, both groups IMT + WBV and IMTsham + WBV improved 6MWD [mean percentage changes = 20.31 (SD = 14.62) and 13.02 (SD = 12.14), respectively] compared with Sham [0.27 (SD = 6.51)], P <0.01. There was also a significant decrease of mean percentage changes on time of the TUG for IMT + WBV [-21.87 (SD = 7.87)] and IMTsham + WBV [-11.15 (SD = 13.64)] compared with Sham [-4.25 (SD = 13.25)], P <0.01. IMT + WBV group improved balance when compared with IMTsham + WBV and Sham groups (P <0.05 and < 0.01, respectively). HGS and levels of lactate and glucose were similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS the addition of IMT to the WBV was effective to improve functionality, balance and physical performance in pre-frail older women.

Abstract
AimsLiuzijue Qigong (LQG) exercise is a traditional Chinese exercise method in which breathing and pronunciation are combined with movement guidance. Breathing is closely related to balance, and LQG, as a special breathing exercise, can be applied to balance dysfunction after stroke. The purpose of this study was to observe the clinical effects of short-term LQG exercise on balance function in patients recovering from stroke.MethodsStroke patients were randomly divided into an Intervention Group (IG) (n = 80) and a Control Group (CG) (n = 80). The IG received conventional rehabilitation training plus LQG and the CG received conventional rehabilitation training plus Core Stability Training (CST). All patients received treatment once a day, 5 times a week for 2 weeks. The primary outcome was Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Secondary outcome measures were static standing and sitting balance with eyes open and closed, Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and diaphragm thickness and mobility during quiet breath (QB) and deep breath (DB).ResultsCompared with the CG, the IG showed significant improvement in the BBS (10.55 ± 3.78 vs. 9.06 ± 4.50, P = 0.039), MPT (5.41 ± 4.70 vs. 5.89 ± 5.24, P = 0.001), MBI (12.88 ± 6.45 vs. 10.00 ± 4.84, P = 0.003), diaphragmatic mobility during QB (0.54 ± 0.73 vs. 0.33 ± 0.40, P = 0.01) and diaphragmatic mobility during DB (0.99 ± 1.32 vs. 0.52 ± 0.77, P = 0.003), Cop trajectory in the standing position with eyes open (−108.34 ± 108.60 vs. −89.00 ± 140.11, P = 0.034) and Cop area in the standing positions with eyes open (−143.79 ± 431.55 vs. −93.29 ± 223.15, P = 0.015), Cop trajectory in the seating position with eyes open (−19.95 ± 23.35 vs. −12.83 ± 26.64, P = 0.001) and Cop area in the seating position with eyes open (−15.83 ± 9.61 vs. −11.29 ± 9.17, P = 0.002).ConclusionsThe short-term LQG combined with conventional rehabilitation training significantly improved the balance functions of stroke patients. Abstract
Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) improved balance ability and respiratory muscle function in healthy older adults. The current study is a retrospective analysis to explore the relationship between inspiratory muscle function, balance ability, and adaptation to IMT. All participants (total = 129; IMT = 60; age range = 65-85 years) performed inspiratory and balance assessments, including the mini-balance evaluation system test, maximal inspiratory pressure, and peak inspiratory flow tests. Baseline inspiratory muscle function was positively related to balance ability (p < .05), and IMT-induced improvements in inspiratory function (23.3% in maximal inspiratory pressure, 8.0% in peak inspiratory flow rate, 14.9% in maximal peak inspiratory power) were related to improvements in balance (10.6% in mini-balance evaluation system test), with the greatest improvements (17.0%) observed in the oldest participants (76-85 years old, p < .05). In conclusion, with or without IMT, positive associations between inspiratory function and balance ability exist, with greater improvements in inspiratory muscle function related to greater improvements in balance ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with cancer experience pulmonary and physical function side effects from the cancer itself and the medical interventions. This systematic review examines the known relationship between pulmonary function and physical function in childhood cancer and identifies gaps in the literature. METHODS A search of Ovid Medline, CINAHL (EbscoHost) and Embase to identify literature from 2009 to March 2020. RESULTS Fifty-seven studies met inclusion criteria. Thirty-seven studies reported impaired pulmonary function. Incidence of pulmonary dysfunction ranged from 45.5 % to 84.1 %. Eighteen studies reported impaired physical function. Three studies investigated the relationship between pulmonary function and physical function. No studies explored inspiratory muscle strength. CONCLUSION Pulmonary function and physical function are related and frequently impaired in children during and after cancer treatment. A literature gap was found in diaphragm function and its relationship with physical function. Future studies should focus on interventions that target the pulmonary mechanisms impacting physical function.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Otago exercises on falls, balance, and physical performance in old-aged adults with high fall risk living in a nursing home. METHODS This randomized controlled trial included 72 individuals over 65 years of age residing in a single nursing home in Izmir, Turkey. The participants were randomized into the Otago exercise group and walking (control) group. The Otago group performed 45 min of Otago exercises 3 days/week for 12 weeks plus a walking program on 3 other days of the week. The control group did only the walking program (minimum of 30 min 3 days/week). Number of falls, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), 30-s Chair Stand Test (30 s-CST), and 6-min Walk Test (6MWT) were assessed before the intervention and at the end of the 3-month intervention. The primary outcome was number of falls. RESULTS The groups were well matched in terms of age (74.6 ± 5.9 vs. 75.8 ± 4.5) and sex (p > 0.05). The Otago group showed a significantly greater reduction in number of falls at the end of the intervention (p < 0.05). Of the secondary outcomes, the Otago group had greater median increases in BBS score (p < 0.05) and 30 s-CST score (p < 0.05) post-intervention compared to the walking group. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of post-intervention change in 6MWT distance (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The Otago exercise program improved balance and physical performance and reduced falls in our sample and may be effective in falls prevention interventions for old-aged nursing home residents.
