The Effect of Happiness Training Based on Fordyce Model on Perceived Stress in the Mothers of Children with Cleft Lip and Palate

The Effect of Happiness Educational Program of Fordyce on the Sense of Coherence and Psychological Well-being of Adolescents with a Parent with Cancer: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background

Having a parent with cancer is one of the risk factors for adolescents, which makes them face many psychological problems. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of Happiness Educational Program of Fordyce on the sense of coherence and psychological well-being of adolescents who have a parent with cancer.

Methods

In this randomized clinical trial study, 92 adolescents whose diagnosed parents have referred to the oncology ward of Shahid Rajaei Hospital in Yasuj, from June to September 2021, were selected through the convenience sampling method; however, they were randomly assigned to one of the two groups of the intervention or control. The number of sessions in the intervention group was 6, each consisting of 60 minutes and performed one day a week for 6 weeks. In addition to the demographic information form, the Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence Questionnaire-13 and the Ryff's scale of Psychological Well-being-18 were used before and immediately after the intervention. Data were analyzed through SPSS software, version 21, using statistical tests of Chi-square, t-test, Fisher's exact, Mann-Whitney, and Wilcoxon.

Results

After the intervention, statistically significant differences were observed in the median scores of the sense of coherence (P<0.001) and psychological well-being (P<0.001) between the two groups of intervention and control.

Conclusion

Although the Happiness Educational Program of Fordyce could improve the sense of coherence and psychological well-being of adolescents who have a parent with cancer, more investigations are recommended to be conducted.Trial Registration Number: IRCT20210331050795N1.

Fordyce happiness training program on the competence of mothers of premature infants admitted to the NICU from Middle East: A quasi-experimental study

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Fordyce Happiness Training Program on the parental competence of mothers of premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This quasi-experimental study was performed on 80 mothers of premature infants who were admitted to a NICU in Iran. Mean Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC) scores of participants in the intervention group before and after training were 61.32 ± 6.44 and 68.52 ± 2.52. Mean PSOC scores for those in the control group before and after the intervention were 64.47 ± 11.08 and 65.30 ± 6.90, respectively. The two groups showed significant differences in terms of parental competence after the happiness training program (p = 0.0001). NICU admission of a premature baby not only has a negative effect on the mother's emotional state but it can also adversely affect the parental sense of competence. Therefore, considering the psychological needs of mothers of premature infants, it is worth considering implementation of programs such as Fordyce Happiness Training, to promote and maintain the mental health of mothers.

Effect of Happiness Counseling on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress in Women with Recurrent Miscarriage

Purpose

This study investigated the effectiveness of a happiness counseling program on depression, anxiety, and stress in pregnant women with a history of recurrent miscarriage.

Patients and Methods

A parallel randomized controlled trial research design was used in this study, which was conducted at the high-risk inpatient unit of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Cairo University Hospitals in Cairo, Egypt. A total of 60 pregnant women who had previously experienced multiple miscarriages were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups (n=30 each). The tools used for data collection were demographic and obstetric data questionnaires and the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Happiness counseling sessions were conducted for the intervention group. Data for qualitative variables were analyzed with the chi-squared test, and the Student’s t test for paired samples was used to compare mean DASS-21 scores of the intervention and control groups. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the association between variables.

Results

The happiness counseling sessions reduced depression, anxiety, and stress in women with recurrent miscarriage, resulting in lower mean DASS-21 scores for the intervention group compared to the control group.

Conclusion

The happiness counseling program had a positive effect on reducing depression, anxiety, and stress in women with recurrent miscarriage. We recommend that this program be used as an effective, low-cost, and noninvasive intervention to improve the mental health and overall wellbeing of women with recurrent miscarriage.

The effectiveness of interventions to improve psychosocial outcomes in parents of children with appearance-affecting health conditions: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Although many cope well, the impact of supporting a child with an Appearance-Affecting Health Condition (AAHC) can place a significant demand on parents. As such, it is vital that families have access to appropriate psychosocial support to reduce any potential difficulties. Although previous reviews have explored the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for parents of Children and Young People (CYP) with general health conditions, the evidence of effectiveness remains limited. Further, little is known about the effectiveness of such interventions specifically among parents of CYP with AAHCs. This review aimed to identify and assess the evidence of effectiveness of psychosocial interventions among parents of CYP with AAHCs.

METHODS

Database searches were conducted using MEDLINE, PsychARTICLES, PsychINFO, CINAHL Plus, the British Nursing Database and the Cochrane Library. Results were reviewed against the inclusion criteria and data were extracted. Methodological quality was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment Tool, and a narrative synthesis was conducted.

RESULTS

Fifteen studies, evaluating 10 interventions, were included and overall seven interventions were found to be effective (effect sizes and methodological quality varied).

CONCLUSIONS

This review finds moderate to strong evidence of effectiveness of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, the Early Family Intervention Program and general parent education/training interventions. These findings offer useful insights relating to the delivery of current support, as well as for the development of future parent and family interventions. Finally, recommendations for future intervention evaluation studies in this area are made.
