Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder with the increasing prevalence of a modern sedentary lifestyle. Wearable technology-based physical activity interventions (WT-BPAI) might provide a channel to improve diabetic self-management. The study aimed to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of WT-BPAI on PA levels, glycemic levels, and other outcomes (blood pressure [BP], body mass index [BMI], and serum lipid profile) in adults with T2DM, and (2) investigate the potential covariates affecting aforementioned outcomes. Eight databases were searched thoroughly using three steps from inception until January 16, 2024. The quality of the studies and overall evidence were evaluated. The package meta of the R software program version 4.3.1. was utilized for meta-analyses, subgroup analyses, and meta-regression analyses. A total of 19 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were found. Meta-analyses revealed that WT-BPAI significantly increased 1583 steps per day and decreased systolic BP (SBP) by 2.46 mmHg. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses found that function, duration of intervention, and age were significant covariates. According to the risk of bias version 2, more than half of the trials raised some concerns about the randomization process, deviations from the intended intervention, and missing outcome data. The certainty of the evidence was very low for all outcomes based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. WT-BPAI can be considered a supplementary intervention to increase the steps per day and decrease SBP, especially when used for short periods in young adults with T2DM. However, we need more well-designed research with long-term outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glycemic control is important to prevent diabetic complications. However, evidence linking factors such as diabetes-related distress (DRD) to poor glycemic outcomes is lacking in Thailand. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of poor glycemic control type 2 diabetes. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 127 type 2 diabetic patients between December 2021 and March 2022 at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Thailand. Data collection included demographic data, clinical data (duration of being type 2 diabetes, diabetic treatment modalities, weight, height, blood pressure, FBS, and HbA1c), behavioral data (self-care behavior, physical activity, dietary assessment, smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep quality), and psycho-social data (depression and DRD). Poor glycemic control was defined as not achieving the target HbA1c based on the 2021 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Guideline. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore the associations between potential factors including DRD, and poor glycemic control. RESULTS The prevalence of poor glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes was 29.1%. Our analysis revealed that age under 65 years old (OR 6.40, 95% CI 2.07-19.77, p = 0.001), obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) (OR 2.96, 95% CI 1.05-8.39, p = 0.041), and DRD (OR 14.20, 95% CI 3.76-53.64, p<0.001) were significantly associated with poor glycemic control. Three dimensions of DRD were associated with poor glycemic control, including emotional distress (OR 4.23, 95% CI 1.51-11.85, p = 0.006), regimen-related distress (OR 6.00, 95% CI 1.88-19.18, p = 0.003), and interpersonal distress (OR 5.25, 95% CI 1.39-20.02, p = 0.015). CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Age, obesity, and DRD are associated with poor glycemic control. A holistic approach that includes addressing DRD is crucial for improving glycemic outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. Further studies in broader populations using a cohort design are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a serious global public health problem that affects the whole life of people in terms of their biological, psychological, and social effects. Complications and death from diabetes occur from poorly controlled blood glucose levels. Thus, dealing with glycemic control is essential for controlling the development of devastating acute and chronic complications related to diabetes. Therefore, this study aims to assess factors associated with poor glycemic control among type2 diabetes patients in public hospitals of Gamo and Gofa zone southern, Ethiopia, 2021. METHODS An institution-based unmatched case-control study was employed among 312 randomly selected participants using a pre-tested, interviewer-administered, and structured questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with poor glycemic control using IBM SPSS version 25. The strength of association was assessed by using an Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULT Factors associated with poor glycemic control based on multivariable analysis were, having comorbidity (AOR = 2.35, 95% CI (1.39-3.95)), adhering to dietary recommendations (AOR = 0.31, 95% CI (089-0.51)), poor social support (AOR = 3.31, 95% CI (1.59-6.85)), physical exercise (AOR = 1.86 95% CI (1.11-3.12)), and having poly-pharmacy (AOR = 2.83, 95% CI (1.39-5.74)). CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION This study indicated a significant association of comorbidity, physical exercise, poly-pharmacy, low social support, and adherence to dietary recommendations with poor glycemic control. We suggest that the health care providers and concerned bodies encourage patients to have regular check-ups and work on providing necessary social support.

Abstract
Background Glycemic control is vital to patient care, and it is still the most important treatment goal for reducing organ damage and other complications associated with diabetes. Physical activity is one of the factors that affects glycemic management. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to find, evaluate, and synthesize the best available information on the link between physical exercise and glycemic control in Ethiopian diabetes patients. Methods Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar and African Journals Online were the databases searched. In addition, gray literature were explored. All papers chosen for inclusion in the review underwent a thorough critical appraisal utilizing the Joanna Briggs Institute's standardized critical appraisal instruments (JBI critical appraisal checklist-2017). For statistical analysis and descriptive synthesis, quantitative articles were combined. The Odds ratio and their 95% confidence intervals were generated. Papers that were of excellent quality but lacked the main outcome (physical activity) for meta-analysis were subjected to descriptive synthesis. Results The finding of this meta-analysis showed diabetes patients who were physically active had controlled their blood glucose levels by 2.4 times compared to their counter (Odds ratio = 2.40, 95% Confidence Interval = 1.57,3.69). The duration of disease was found to be the most commonly reported predictor for poor glycemic control followed by dietary habits, patients' sex and age. Conclusion Physical activity, which is a simple and inexpensive therapy for diabetes patients, can help them control their blood glucose levels. Patients with diabetes who have had it for a long time should be aware of the need of regular physical activity in maintaining blood glucose control.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is the subject of numerous studies, most of them focusing on the negative effects exerted at both molecular and cellular levels, ignoring the possible benefits of free radicals. More and more people admit to having heard of the term "oxidative stress", but few of them understand the meaning of it. We summarized and analyzed the published literature data in order to emphasize the importance and adaptation mechanisms of basal oxidative stress. This review aims to provide an overview of the mechanisms underlying the positive effects of oxidative stress, highlighting these effects, as well as the risks for the population consuming higher doses than the recommended daily intake of antioxidants. The biological dose-response curve in oxidative stress is unpredictable as reactive species are clearly responsible for cellular degradation, whereas antioxidant therapies can alleviate senescence by maintaining redox balance; nevertheless, excessive doses of the latter can modify the redox balance of the cell, leading to a negative outcome. It can be stated that the presence of oxidative status or oxidative stress is a physiological condition with well-defined roles, yet these have been insufficiently researched and explored. The involvement of reactive oxygen species in the pathophysiology of some associated diseases is well-known and the involvement of antioxidant therapies in the processes of senescence, apoptosis, autophagy, and the maintenance of cellular homeostasis cannot be denied. All data in this review support the idea that oxidative stress is an undesirable phenomenon in high and long-term concentrations, but regular exposure is consistent with the hormetic theory.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the association between physical exercise and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in Korean patients diagnosed with diabetes. Data from the 2015−2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. In total, 2559 participants were included (1286 males and 1273 females). Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the effect of physical exercise on controlled HbA1c levels among diabetic patients. In Korean male patients with diabetes, performance of physical exercise, including walking and resistance exercises, was associated with controlled HbA1c levels < 6.5% (odds ratio (OR), 1.85; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.17−2.92). In males, performing resistance exercise for ≥5 days a week, without walking exercise, had a significant association with HbA1c levels (OR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.15−2.65). HbA1c levels were more likely to be controlled when both walking and resistance exercises were performed for ≥5 days a week in both sexes (males: OR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.04−2.93 and females: OR, 2.59; 95% CI, 1.09−6.15). This study found that resistance exercise may contribute to the management of HbA1c levels among Korean patients with diabetes. Promoting resistance exercise performance can be beneficial for improving the condition of patients with diabetes.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate factors affecting blood glucose control among middle-aged and older diabetic patients taking medications or receiving insulin therapy. In 2015–2017 data obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 1257 patients with diabetes were divided into a controlled group and an uncontrolled group based on blood glucose levels (cutoff ≥126 mg/dL). After adjusting for confounding factors, the BMI, total cholesterol level, and triglycerides level of the uncontrolled group were significantly higher than the controlled group. The total amount of moderate-intensity activity in controlled patients was significantly higher than that of the controlled group. Total energy, fat, saturated fatty acids, and cholesterol intakes were found to be significantly higher in the uncontrolled than controlled group. Intakes of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C were significantly lower in the uncontrolled than controlled group. Adequate nutrition intake and physical activity of patients undergoing diabetes therapy are required for effective blood glucose management for both diabetic drug and insulin therapies.

Abstract
In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the baseline risk factors of diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients with undiagnosed DM (UDM). We utilized the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010–2017 data. Data regarding the participants’ demographic characteristics, health status, health determinants, healthcare accessibility, and laboratory tests were gathered to explore the differences between the DM, UDM, and without-DM groups. Among the 64,759 individuals who participated in the KNHANES 2010–2017, 32,611 individuals aged ≥20 years with fasting plasma glucose levels of <100 or ≥126 mg/dL were selected. The odds ratios (ORs) regarding family history of diabetes and the performance of national health and cancer screening tests were lower in the UDM group than in the DM group (adjusted OR: 0.54; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.43, 0.66; adjusted OR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.62, 0.89; adjusted OR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.60, 0.85). The ORs of hypertension and obesity were higher in the UDM group than in the DM group (adjusted OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.64; adjusted OR: 1.80; 95% CI: 1.37, 2.36, respectively). Patients with UDM were more likely to be exposed to DM-related risk factors than those with and without DM. Public health interventions to prevent UDM development are necessary.

Abstract
Introduction Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease and a global epidemic. It is a known fact that co-morbidities, including Diabetes Mellitus, pose a higher risk of infection by COVID-19. Additionally, the outcomes following infection are far worse than in people without such co-morbities.Factors contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have long been established, yet this disease still bestows a substantial global burden. The aim was to provide a comprehensive review of the burden of diabetes pre-COVID-19 and the additional impact sustained by the diabetes population and healthcare systems during the COVID-19 pandemic, while providing recommendations of how this burden can be subsided. Methodology Literature searches were carried out on 'Google Scholar' and 'PubMed' to identify relevant articles for the scope of this review. Information was also collected from reliable sources such as the World Health Organisation and the International Diabetes Federation. Results T2DM presented with economic, social and health burdens prior to COVID-19 with an significant 'Disability Adjusted Life Years' impact. Whilst people with diabetes are more susceptible to COVID-19, enforcing lockdown regulations set by the Public Health department to reduce risk of infection brought about its own challenges to T2DM management. Through recommendations and adapting to new methods of management such as telehealth, these challenges and potential consequences of mismanagement are kept to a minimum whilst safeguarding the healthcare system. Conclusion By understanding the challenges and burdens faced by this population both evident pre-covid and during, targeted healthcare can be provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, implementation of targeted action plans and recommendations ensures the care provided is done in a safe and effective environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Body mass index (BMI) is positively associated with bone mineral density and type 2 diabetes. We investigated an optimal BMI range for osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 2008 to 2011. We included 3,774 men aged > 50 years and 4,982 postmenopausal women. Logistic regression models were applied to elucidate each BMI category's osteoporosis and diabetes risks. RESULTS The prevalence of osteoporosis was 9.0% for men and 40.8% for women. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in men was 19.7% and in women was 15.5%. In men with BMI > 25 kg/m2, the osteoporosis risk did not further increase as BMI increased. In women, BMI was linearly associated with osteoporosis risk without a plateau. In both men and women, higher BMI was associated with a higher type 2 diabetes risk. Men with a BMI of 23.0 to 24.9 kg/m2 harbored about a 30% lower osteoporosis risk than and a similar diabetes risk to those with a BMI of 21.0 to 22.9 kg/m2. In women with a BMI of 23.0 to 24.9 kg/m2, the adjusted odds ratio for osteoporosis was 0.72 (95% confidence interval, 0.59 to 0.87); the diabetes risk was not higher than in those with a BMI of 21.0 to 22.9 kg/m2. CONCLUSION For Korean men aged > 50 years and postmenopausal women, a BMI of 23.0 to 24.9 kg/m2 was the optimal range for minimizing osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes risks simultaneously.

Abstract
Physical activity reduces the risk and mortality risk of inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to examine the relationship between regular walking and periodontitis in a Korean representative sample of adults according to socioeconomic status. Data acquired by the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2014 and 2015 were used. The survey was completed by 11,921 (5,175 males; 6,746 females) participants (≥19 years). Individuals without values on periodontitis were excluded, and 9,728 participants remained. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done using socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, income, education), oral health-related variables (flossing, interdental brushing, community periodontal index), oral and general health status and behaviour (smoking, diabetes mellitus), and regular walking. In all models, subjects who walked regularly had significantly lower risks of periodontitis. After adjusting for age, gender, income, education, smoking, diabetes mellitus, flossing, and interdental brushing, the odds ratio for periodontitis in subjects who walked regularly was 0.793 (95% Confidence interval: 0.700-0.898). Non-regular walking groups showed similar social gradients. Risk of low socioeconomic status was not significant in the regular walking group after adjusting for age, gender, income, and education. This study found that regular walking is associated to lower prevalence of periodontitis and can attenuate the relationship between periodontitis and low socioeconomic status.

Diabetes-related knowledge of Polish national mountain leaders. High Alt Med Biol. 19:237-243, 2018.-Mountain trekking is a popular activity for patients with diabetes. In Poland, mountain leaders often accompany organized groups to ensure their safety during treks; we aimed to evaluate their competency in caring for diabetic clients by assessing their diabetes-related knowledge. This was a cross-sectional study among Polish, certified, active mountain leaders carried out by means of an anonymous, standardized 41-item questionnaire adapted from a study by Wee et al. It was distributed through e-mail to 500 leaders. A total of 106 (21.2%) mountain leaders completed the questionnaire (males 60.4%) with a mean (standard deviation [SD]) age of 38.6 (13.5) years. Their mean (SD) length of experience acting as a mountain leader was 11.9 (10.2) years. The average score was 72.4% of the maximum possible (29.7 of 41 points). Results varied significantly depending on gender (p = 0.006). The percentage of correct answers among questions in each section varied between 23.6% and 100%. The main sources of diabetes-related knowledge identified by respondents were members of their family and their friends who suffer from diabetes (33%). First aid courses were indicated as sources of information by only 12.6% of the informants. Results of the questionnaire revealed that respondents did have a reasonable level of diabetes-related knowledge. There were topics in which the respondents achieved lower than an average score, demonstrating a need for further education.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) consists of a set of metabolic and endocrine disorders which evolve into deficiency in insulin action and hyperglycemia. Physical exercise is considered the main intervention to prevent and control T2DM. Literature has suggested that circulating microRNAs (miRs) help to understand responses to physical activity among diabetic patients. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the acute effect of two interventions (strength and cardiovascular) on the total, whole blood circulating concentrations of miR-126, miR-146a and miR-155 in older adults with and without T2DM. A total of 23 male and female older adults (68.2±5.3 years) participated in the trial, 13 of whom presented with controlled T2DM and 10 were nondiabetics. They underwent both interventions separately, performed with intensity from 60% to 70% of reserve heart rate. Glucose and miRs levels were quantified and compared across groups with baseline titers as covariables. Diabetic patients showed more reduction in serum blood glucose than nondiabetics, with a great magnitude of reduction after the strength training intervention, which was paralleled by a positive change of the whole blood circulating levels of miR-146a, but not of the other miRs. Our report supports evidence that miR-146a levels in peripheral blood leukocytes are negatively associated with a state of insulin resistance, which is suggested as a novel marker to trace response to antidiabetic interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Much attention has been paid recently to a relationship between glucose metabolism and weather. This study investigated the temporal correlation between total solar irradiance (TSI) and glycated hemoglobin (A1C) values in patients with diabetes. METHODS In 1531 patients with diabetes who received follow-up care between 2009 and 2013 (type 1 diabetes, 123 patients; type 2 diabetes, 1408 patients; male 53.6%; mean age, 61.2 years), A1C levels were measured a total of 58,830 times. The correlation between mean monthly TSI and mean A1C values from 1 to 4 months later was then examined. RESULTS The mean values for TSI and A1C throughout the entire study period were 13.7 MJ/m2 and 7.7%, respectively. The correlation coefficient between TSI and mean monthly A1C values at 1 to 4 months was -0.516, -0.734, -0.726 and -0.475, respectively (all p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS There was a highly negative correlation between TSI and mean A1C values 2 to 3 months later in this population; thus, this fact may need to be considered when using A1C levels as a glycemic control index in patients with diabetes. Further studies are warranted.

Abstract
[Purpose] The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise
training on the levels of peripheral brain-derived neurotrophic factor and eotaxin-1 in
obese young men. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects included sixteen obese young men with
a body mass index greater than 25 kg/m2. They were randomly divided between
control and exercise groups (n = 8 in each group). The exercise group performed treadmill
exercise for 40 min, 3 times a week for 8 weeks at the intensity of 70% heart rate
reserve. Blood collection was performed to examine the levels of serum glucose, plasma
malonaldehyde, serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and plasma eotaxin-1 before and
after the intervention (aerobic exercise training). [Results] Following the intervention,
serum BDNF levels were significantly higher, while serum glucose, plasma MDA, and plasma
eotaxin-1 levels were significantly lower than those prior to the intervention in the
exercise group. [Conclusion] Aerobic exercise training can induce neurogenesis in obese
individuals by increasing the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and reducing the
levels of eotaxin-1. Alleviation of oxidative stress is possibly responsible for such
changes.
