Characterization of Bis-Acryl Composite Resins for Provisional Restorations

The effect of surface treatment and thermal aging on the bonding of clear aligner attachments to provisional resin-based material: shear bond strength analysis

Objectives

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of clear aligner attachments bonded to Bis-acryl provisional crowns.

Methods

120 cylindrical bisacrylic composite material (ProTemp type) specimens were prepared and divided into six groups (n = 20) based on surface treatment, control: (no treatment); super coarse grit diamond bur, carbide bur, alumina-blasting, non-thermal plasma treatment, and Er:YAG laser treatment. The features of treated surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A flowable composite resin (Transbond XT; 3M Unitek) was bonded to the specimens forming the attachment. Half of specimens were subjected to thermal cycling (5,000 cycles). SBS was measured before and after thermal cycling. Each specimen was loaded at the attachment/resin interface at a speed of 0.5 mm/min until failure. The nature of the failure was analyzed using the composite remnants index (CRI). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD were used for data analysis α =  0.5. For CRI scores analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison were used as post-hoc test.

Results

SEM analysis showed that all surface treatments altered surface properties and increase surface bonding area. The specimens treated with plasma, Er:YAG laser, and alumina-blasting had higher SBS values before and after thermal cycling. In comparison to control plasma, Er:YAG laser, and alumina-blasting showed a significant increase in SBS (P < 0.001) while carbide and diamond bur groups showed no significant differences (P > 0.05). Thermal cycling significantly decreased the SBS of control, carbide bur, diamond bur, and Er:YAG laser while no significant effect of alumina-blasting and plasma group. Er:YAG laser and plasma groups significantly exhibited more dominance for scores 2 and score 3 and the absence of score 0.

Conclusion

Alumina-blasting, Er:YAG laser, or non-thermal plasma surface treatments increased the shear bond strength between clear aligner attachments and resin-based restorations.

Comparative Evaluation of Mechanical Properties and Color Stability of Dental Resin Composites for Chairside Provisional Restorations

Resin composites have become the preferred choice for chairside provisional dental restorations. However, these materials may undergo discoloration, changes in surface roughness, and mechanical properties with aging in the oral cavity, compromising the aesthetics, functionality, and success of dental restorations. To investigate the color and mechanical stability of chairside provisional composite resins, this study evaluated the optical, surface, and mechanical properties of four temporary restoration resin materials before and after aging, stimulated by thermal cycling in double-distilled water. Measurements, including CIE LAB color analysis, three-point bending test, nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were conducted (n = 15). Results showed significant differences among the materials in terms of optical, surface, and mechanical properties. Revotek LC (urethane dimethacrylate) demonstrated excellent color stability (ΔE00 = 0.53-Black/0.32-White), while Artificial Teeth Resin (polymethyl methacrylate) exhibited increased mechanical strength with aging (p < 0.05, FS = 68.40 MPa-non aging/87.21 MPa-aging). Structur 2 SC (Bis-acrylic) and Luxatemp automix plus (methyl methacrylate bis-acrylate) demonstrated moderate stability in optical and mechanical properties (Structur 2 SC: ΔE00 = 1.97-Black/1.38-White FS = 63.20 MPa-non aging/50.07 MPa-aging) (Luxatemp automix plus: ΔE00 = 2.49-Black/1.77-White FS = 87.72 MPa-non aging/83.93 MPa-aging). These results provide important practical guidance for clinical practitioners, as well as significant theoretical and experimental bases for the selection of restorative composite resins.

Biaxial flexural strength of hydrothermally aged resin-based materials

PURPOSE

The strength of temporary restorations plays a vital role in full-mouth reconstruction, and it can be impacted by the aging process. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the biaxial flexural strength and fractographic features of different resin-based materials submitted to thermal aging.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred and ninety-two resin disc-shaped specimens (6.5 mm in diameter and 0.5 mm in thickness) were fabricated and divided into six experimental groups according to the resin-based materials (Filtek Bulk-Fill flowable resin; J-Temp temporary resin; and Fuji Lining glass ionomer cement) and aging process (before and after thermal cycling). Biaxial flexural strength test was performed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min before and after thermal cycling (5 °C and 55 °C, 5760 cycles, 30 s). The mechanical properties were assessed using Weibull parameters (characteristic strength and Weibull modulus) (n = 30). Fractured specimens were examined under a polarized light stereomicroscope to identify crack origin and propagation direction. The surface microstructure of the resin-based materials was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (n = 2). The Weibull modulus (m), characteristic strength, and reliability properties were calculated, and a contour plot was used to detect differences among groups (95% confidence interval).

RESULTS

The Weibull modulus (m), characteristic strength, and reliability of the resin-based compounds were influenced by material type and thermal aging (p < 0.05). Weibull modulus (m) revealed no differences when comparing the materials and aging process (p > 0.05), except for the preceding aging period where Filtek Bulk-Fill exhibited higher values compared to J-Temp (p < 0.05). Filtek Bulk-Fill demonstrated superior characteristic strength and reliability compared to J-Temp and Fuji Lining before and after thermal cycling (p < 0.05). Fractography of the resin-based materials showed fractures originating from surface defects exposed to tensile side and their propagation toward the compressive side. Generally, no differences in surface microstructure were observed on micrographs before and after thermal aging for Filtek Bulk-Fill and Fuji Lining. However, the aging process developed flaws in J-Temp.

CONCLUSION

Resin-based material composition resulted in different flexural strength performance, impacting the Weibull modulus (m), characteristic strength, and reliability of the resin-based restorations.

Elution from direct composites for provisional restorations

Purpose To assess elution from direct composite materials for provisional restorations and compare them with elution from direct restorative composites for permanent restorations.Methods Two dual-cure (Integrity Multi-Cure and Tempsmart DC) and two self-curing composites (Protemp 4 and Structur 3) were used, with Essentia serving as a reference. Cylindrical specimens (n=20) were cured according to the manufacturer's instructions; the dual-cure materials were prepared in both self- and dual-curing modes. Elution experiments were performed using water and absolute ethanol. The samples were incubated at 37 °C for either 24 h or four weeks; the extraction solvents were refreshed weekly. The eluted BisEMA (-3 / -6 / -10), BisGMA, CQ, UDMA, and TEGDMA were quantified using UHPLC-MS/MS.Results Monomer elution was detected in all provisional composites at 24 h and four weeks, but the amounts released did not exceed those released by the reference composite. When prepared in self-curing mode, Integrity Multi-Cure exhibited significantly higher elution of BisEMA-3, -6, and -10 in ethanol both after 24 h and cumulatively after four weeks. Self-cured Tempsmart DC released significantly more CQ, TEGDMA, and UDMA in both water and ethanol after immersion for 24 h and four weeks, along with significantly more BisGMA in ethanol both after 24 h and four weeks comparison to dual-cured Tempsmart DC (two-way ANOVA, post-hoc Tukey, P < 0.05).Conclusions Provisional composite materials did not elute higher amounts of monomers than a restorative composite. Dual-cured materials, prepared in the self-curing mode, show a trend towards higher monomer elution.

Physical and structural characterization of bis-acryl composite resin

During the preparation of fixed prosthesis (including individual bridges and crowns) it is important to select the materials that have the best features and properties to predict a successful clinical treatment. The objective of this study was to determine if the chemical and structural characteristics could cause to increase the fracture resistance, we used four bis-acryl resins Luxatemp, Protemp, Structur and Telio. Three-points bending by Flexural test were performed in ten bars and they were carried out to compare with Anova test. In addition, the bis-acryl resins were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, to analyze microstructure and morphology and the molecular structure were performed by Infrared Spectroscopy through Attenuated Total Reflectance. A higher flexural strength was found in Luxatemp and Structur with, no significant differences between this study groups. Regarding Protemp and Telio, these study groups showed a lower flexural strength when were compared with Luxatemp and Structur. These results corroborate SEM and ATR analysis because Luxatemp sample showed a regular size particle on the surface and chemically presents a long cross-linkage polymer chain. The presence of CO3, SiO2 and N-H groups as a fillers particle interacting with OH groups cause a higher flexural strength compared with another groups.

Effects of various beverages on characteristics of provisional restoration materials

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of common beverages on four currently used provisional restoration materials: Protemp®4, Integrity®, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) block, and acrylic resin. Flowable resin composite is included as a control group.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Each material was formed into disks of 10-mm diameter and 4-mm thickness (N = 40) by loading the material into acrylic molds. The exposed surface in the mold was covered using a glass slide to prevent an oxygen inhibition layer, and polymerization then proceeded. The solidified disks were placed in distilled water for 24 h. These samples (n = 8) were then immersed for 14 days in one of four different beverages: water, orange juice, cola, and coffee. Changes in color dimension, hardness, and roughness were observed and then analyzed using two-way repeated analysis of variance.

RESULTS

The provisional materials had more obvious changes in all three color dimensions than the flowable resin composite. Integrity showed the biggest changes, followed by acrylic resin and PMMA block, whereas Protemp had the smallest changes. The hardness of all the materials significantly decreased after immersion in any of the beverages for 14 days. There were no changes in surface roughness when the materials were immersed in distilled water. The surface roughness of the PMMA block significantly decreased in orange juice whereas that of Integrity and acrylic resin significantly increased in cola.

CONCLUSION

Different kinds of provisional materials had different degrees of staining due to their composition. Moisture had a significant influence on the hardness of materials, and the acidity of cola significantly roughened the surface of the provisional materials.

Assessment of Marginal and Internal Adaptation in Provisional Crowns Utilizing Three Distinct Materials

AIMS

This study aimed to assess the marginal and internal adaptation of provisional crowns fabricated from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) blocks by the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system, autopolymerizing PMMA, and acrylic base composite resin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this in vitro experimental study, a brass die was obtained, and provisional crowns were fabricated in three groups using Teliocad PMMA blocks by the CAD/CAM system, Tempron GC auto-polymerizing PMMA, and Bisico acrylic base composite resin (n = 7 in each group). The provisional crowns were coded and randomly placed on the die. Their marginal adaptation was evaluated under a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification, while their internal adaptation was assessed by the replica technique. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The mean marginal gap was the highest in autopolymerizing PMMA and the lowest in the CAD/CAM PMMA group (p < 0.05). The mean marginal gap in the autopolymerizing PMMA group was significantly higher than that in the resin material (p = 0.014) and CAD/CAM PMMA (p = 0.000) groups. The difference between the resin material and CAD/CAM PMMA groups was not significant (p = 0.13). The mean internal gap was the highest in autopolymerizing PMMA group and the lowest in CAD/CAM PMMA group (p < 0.05). The mean internal gap in autopolymerizing PMMA group was significantly higher than that in composite resin (p = 0.002) and CAD/CAM PMMA (p = 0.00) groups. The difference between the resin material and CAD/CAM PMMA groups was not significant (p = 0.322).

CONCLUSION

Computer-aided design/Computer-aided manufacturing PMMA provisional crowns showed the highest marginal and internal adaptation followed by acrylic base resin material crowns.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing PMMA crowns demonstrate superior marginal and internal adaptation compared with autopolymerizing PMMA and acrylic base composite resin crowns, suggesting CAD/CAM technology's potential for enhancing clinical outcomes. Influence of CAD/CAM Milling and 3D-Printing Fabrication Methods on the Mechanical Properties of 3-Unit Interim Fixed Dental Prosthesis after Thermo-Mechanical Aging Process

This study assessed the influence of CAD/CAM milling and 3D-printing fabrication methods on mechanical properties of 3-unit interim fixed dental prosthesis (IFDPs) after thermo-mechanical aging. Forty 3-unit IFDPs were fabricated on a mandibular right second premolar and second molar of a typodont cast. Samples were fabricated from the following materials; auto-polymerized polymethyl methacrylate (conventional resin), CAD/CAM PMMA (milled resin) and two different CAD/CAM 3D-printed composite resins; digital light processing Asiga (DLP AS) and stereolithography NextDent (SLA ND). Mechanical properties were compared between the studied materials using Kruskal−Wallis test, followed by multiple pairwise comparisons using Bonferroni adjusted significance. There was a significant difference in flexural strength and microhardness between the studied materials (p < 0.001), with the highest mean ± SD reported in the milled IFDPs (174.42 ± 3.39, 27.13 ± 0.52), and the lowest in the conventional IFDPs (98.02 ± 6.1, 15.77 ± 0.32). Flexural strengths differed significantly between the conventional IFDPs and all materials except DLP AS. The highest elastic modulus was recorded in the milled group, and the lowest in the SLA ND group (p = 0.02). In conclusion, superior flexural strength, elastic modulus, and hardness were reported for milled IFDPs. SLA ND printed IFDPs showed comparable mechanical properties to milled ones except for the elastic modulus.

Temporary materials used in prosthodontics: The effect of composition, fabrication mode, and aging on mechanical properties

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of composition, fabrication mode, and thermal cycling on the mechanical properties of different polymeric systems used for temporary dental prostheses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Standard bar-shaped specimens (25 × 2 × 2 mm) were fabricated of six polymeric systems of varying compositions and fabrication modes (n = 10/group): conventional PMMA (Alike, GC) - group CGC; conventional PMMA (Dêncor, Clássico) - group CD; bis-acryl (Tempsmart, GC) - group BGC; bis-acryl (Yprov, Yller) - group BY; milled PMMA (TelioCAD, Ivoclar) - group MI; 3D printed bis-acryl - (Cosmos Temp, Yller) group PY. Half of the specimens were subjected to 5000 thermal cycles (5 °C to 55 °C). Three-point bending tests were performed using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed set to 0.5 mm/min. Flexural strength and elastic modulus were calculated from the collected data. FTIR spectra were recorded pre and post curing and after thermal cycling to evaluate material composition and degree of conversion. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were utilized to examine the composition and micromorphology of the systems, respectively. Data were analyzed using two-analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

FTIR spectra indicated that BGC, BY and PY groups corresponded to urethane dimethacrylate systems (bis-acryl), while CGC, CD, and MI groups corresponded to monomethacrylate systems, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Bis-acryl BGC system yeilded the highest flexural strength (80 MPa), followed by the milled PMMA MI system (71 MPa), both statistically significant different relative to other groups. Bis-acryl BY exhibited the lowest flexural strength (27 MPa). Thermocycling significantly increased the flexural strength of all polymeric systems (∼10-15 MPa), except for the 3D-printed PY group. Bis-acryl BGC (1.89 GPa) and conventional PMMA CGC (1.66 GPa) groups exhibited the highest elastic modulus, followed by milled PMMA MI group (1.51 GPa) and conventional PMMA CD (1.45 GPa) systems, with significant difference detected between BGC group and MI and CD groups. The 3D printed PY (0.78 GPa) and bis-acryl BY (0.47 GPa) systems presented the lowest elastic modulus. Thermocycling did not have a significant influence on the elastic modulus. FTIR spectra indicate water sorption and release of unreacted monomers as well as increased degree of conversion (∼5-12%) after thermal cycling.

CONCLUSION

Composition and fabrication mode and thermal cycling significantly affected the mechanical properties of polymeric systems used for temporary dental prostheses.

Effect of Additional Dry Heat Curing on Microflexural Strength in Three Types of Resin Composite: An In Vitro Study

Aim: Additional dry heat curing is a method that favorably influences the mechanical properties of an indirect resin composite restoration. Microflexural strength is a property currently applied for the evaluation of indirect resin composite restorations. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of additional dry heat curing on microflexural strength in three types of direct-use resin composites. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study consisted of 70 resin composites samples made with a 6 × 2 × 1 mm metal matrix and divided into seven experimental groups, which included Gr1a: Tetric N-Ceram without additional dry heat curing (n = 10); Gr1b: Tetric N-Ceram with additional dry heat curing (n = 10); Gr 2a: Filtek Z350 XT without additional dry heat curing (n = 10); Gr2b: Filtek Z350 XT with additional dry heat curing (n = 10); Gr3a: Filtek Z250 without additional dry heat curing (n = 10); Gr3b: Filtek Z250 with additional dry heat curing (n = 10); and Gr4: SR Nexco Paste (control) without additional dry heat curing (n = 10). The samples were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h. A universal testing machine with a 2000 N load cell at a speed of 1 mm/min was used to assess flexural strength. The data were analyzed with a parametric ANOVA test with Tukey’s post hoc intergroup factor (for groups without heat treatment) and a nonparametric Kruskall Wallis test with Bonferroni’s post hoc (for groups with heat treatment). In addition, the comparison of independent groups in each resin composite type with and without heat treatment was performed with a Mann Whitney U test. A significance level of p < 0.05 was considered. Results: The Filtek Z250 resin composite with and without additional dry heat curing presented the highest microflexural strength values with 137.27 ± 24.43 MPa and 121.32 ± 9.74 MPa, respectively, while the SR Nexco Paste (control) resin composite presented the lowest microflexural strength values with 86.06 ± 14.34 MPa compared to all the resin composites with additional dry heat curing. The Filtek Z250 and Filtek Z350XT resin composites with and without additional dry heat curing presented significantly higher microflexural strength versus the SR Nexco (p < 0.05) and Tetric N-Ceram (p < 0.05) resin composites. In addition, the Filtek Z350XT and Tetric N-Ceram resin composites with additional dry heat curing showed significantly higher microflexural strength (p < 0.05) compared to those without additional dry heat curing. Conclusions: The Filtek Z250 and Z350XT resin composites had significantly higher microflexural strength values with and without additional dry heat curing. In addition, the Filtek Z350XT and Tetric N-Ceram resin composites subjected to additional dry heat curing showed significantly higher microflexural strength compared to when they did not receive the same procedure, a situation that did not occur with the Filtek Z250 resin composite.

Failure load of milled, 3D-printed, and conventional chairside-dispensed interim 3-unit fixed dental prostheses

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

New techniques and materials for the laboratory fabrication of interim fixed dental prostheses have gained in popularity, yet how their failure strengths compare with conventional chairside materials is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the strength of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milled polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) or 3-dimensionally (3D) printed bis-acryl interim fixed dental prostheses with a traditional chairside-dispensed autopolymerizing bis-acryl prosthesis while taking into account the effect of loading rate and storage time.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A dentiform mandibular second premolar and second molar with a first molar pontic were prepared and scanned. Three groups of 3-unit interim fixed dental prostheses were fabricated: milled PMMA, 3D-printed bis-acryl, and chairside-dispensed autopolymerizing bis-acryl. The interim prostheses were evaluated for fit with a silicone disclosing material and cemented onto 3D-printed resin dies. The specimens were stored in 100% humidity at 37 °C. After 1 or 30 days of storage, the cemented interim prostheses were loaded to failure in a universal testing machine at 1 or 10 mm/min (n=15/group). Failure loads were analyzed by 3-way analysis of variance and multiple comparisons (α=.05).

RESULTS

Mean ±standard deviation failure loads ranged from 363 ±93 N (3D-printed bis-acryl, 30 days, 1 mm/min) to 729 ±113 N (milled PMMA, 24 hours, 1 mm/min). Loading rate did not significantly affect failure load of the interim prostheses (P=.306). After 30 days of storage in 100% humidity, the failure load of milled PMMA and 3D-printed bis-acryl interim prostheses decreased significantly, but the chairside autopolymerizing bis-acryl prostheses were not affected. After 30 days of storage, the failure loads of milled PMMA and chairside autopolymerizing bis-acryl were not significantly different.

CONCLUSIONS

Regardless of loading rate, interim fixed dental prostheses from milled PMMA had the highest initial strength 1 day after storage. Thirty days of exposure to humidity, however, reduced the strength of the CAD-CAM-manufactured interim prostheses, whereas the traditional chairside prostheses retained their strength.

Surface Properties of Polymer Resins Fabricated with Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing Techniques

This study aimed to compare the surface roughness, hardness, and flexure strength of interim indirect resin restorations fabricated with CAD-CAM (CC), 3D printing (3D), and conventional techniques (CV). Twenty disk (3 mm × Ø10 mm) and ten bar specimens (25 × 2 × 2 mm) were fabricated for the CC, 3D, and CV groups, to be used for surface roughness, micro-hardness, and flexural strength testing using standardized protocol. Three indentations for Vickers micro-hardness (VHN) were performed on each disk and an average was identified for each specimen. Surface micro-roughness (Ra) was calculated in micrometers (μm) using a 3D optical non-contact surface microscope. A three-point bending test with a universal testing machine was utilized for assessing flexural strength. The load was applied at a crosshead speed of 3 mm/min over a distance of 25 mm until fracture. Means and standard deviations were compared using ANOVA and post hoc Tukey–Kramer tests, and a p-value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Ra was significantly different among the study groups (p < 0.05). Surface roughness among the CC and CV groups was statistically comparable (p > 0.05). However, 3D showed significantly higher Ra compared to CC and CV samples (p < 0.05). Micro-hardness was significantly higher in 3D samples (p < 0.05) compared to CC and CV specimens. In addition, CC and CV showed comparable micro-hardness (p > 0.05). A significant difference in flexural strength was observed among the study groups (p < 0.05). CC and 3D showed comparable strength outcomes (p > 0.05), although CV specimens showed significantly lower (p < 0.05) strength compared to CC and 3D samples. The 3D-printed provisional restorative resins showed flexural strength and micro-hardness comparable to CAD-CAM fabricated specimens, and surface micro-roughness for printed specimens was considerably higher compared to CAD-CAM and conventional fabrication techniques.

A study on the characteristics of resin composites for provisional restorations

In this study, we evaluated the characteristics of five commercial resin composites used for provisional restorations. The inorganic filler contents of the resins were measured, and three-point bending, wear, surface hardness, water absorption, and staining tests were performed. The specimens underwent additional three-point bending tests after water storage and undergoing thermal stresses at 5°C and 55°C (10,000 cycles). Data were analyzed using one- or two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc tests. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used for pairwise comparisons. Each resin composite presented with different mechanical properties, based on variations in the inorganic filler content. The flexural strength of each resin composite was significantly decreased after water storage. There has a positive correlation between flexural strength and dynamic hardness but a negative correlation between flexural strength and maximum wear depth. The types and contents of the inorganic fillers, the composition of the monomer in the resin matrix, and the addition of plasticizers can affect the properties of the material.

Influence of Polymeric Restorative Materials on the Stress Distribution in Posterior Fixed Partial Dentures: 3D Finite Element Analysis

Background: This study evaluated the effect of interim restorative materials (acrylic resin (AR), resin composite (RC) or polyetheretherketone (PEEK) for dental computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)) on the stress distribution of a posterior three-unit fixed partial denture. Methods: The abutment teeth (first molar and first premolar) were modeled using the BioCAD protocol containing 1.5 mm of axial reduction and converging axial walls. A static structural analysis was performed in the computer-aided engineering software, and the Maximum Principal Stress criterion was used to analyze the prosthesis and the cement layers of both abutment teeth. The materials were considered isotropic, linearly elastic, homogeneous and with bonded contacts. An axial load (600 N) was applied to the occlusal surface of the second premolar. Results: Regardless of the restorative material, the region of the prosthetic connectors showed the highest tensile stress magnitude. The highest stress peak was observed with the use of RC (129 MPa) compared to PEEK and AR. For the cement layers, RC showed the lowest values in the occlusal region (7 MPa) and the highest values for the cervical margin (14 MPa) compared to PEEK (21 and 12 MPa) and AR (21 and 13 MPa). Conclusions: Different interim restorative materials for posterior fixed partial dentures present different biomechanical behavior. The use of resin composite can attenuate the stress magnitude on the cement layer, and the use of acrylic resin can attenuate the stress magnitude on the connector region.

Evaluation of Internal Fit and Marginal Adaptation of Provisional Crowns Fabricated with Three Different Techniques

Different techniques have been used to construct provisional crowns to protect prepared teeth. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the internal fit and marginal discrepancy of provisional crowns made by different methods. A total of 48 provisional crowns were constructed and divided into three groups (n = 16) according to the fabrication methods: fabricated manually-group MAN; computer-aided design/computer aided manufacturing technology-group CAM; and 3-dimensional (3D)-printed technology-group 3DP. The same standard tessellation language (STL) file was used for both CAD/CAM and 3D-printed group. The silicone-checked method was used to measure the internal gap distance. The marginal discrepancy was measured by using the polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) replica method and swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning technique. Data were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey tests at α = 0.05. At the central pit and axial walls, the gap distance mean values of group CAM were higher than those from group MAN and 3DP. The group 3DP was statistically significantly higher in gap distance at the location of occlusion than group MAN and group CAM (p < 0.05). The total gap distances assessed by silicone-checked method revealed there were no statistically significant differences between the tested groups (p > 0.05). The total mean values of absolute and horizontal marginal discrepancy of the group 3DP obtained by using the PVS-replica method and OCT scanning technique were significantly higher than the group MAN and CAM (p < 0.05). Regression correlation results of marginal discrepancy indicated a positive correlation (r = 0.902) between PVS-replica method and OCT scanning technique. The manually fabricated provisional crowns presented better internal fit and a smaller marginal discrepancy. Between different assessment techniques for marginal adaptation, PVS-replica method and OCT scanning technique have a positive correlation.

Comparison of CAD-CAM and traditional chairside processing of 4-unit interim prostheses with and without cantilevers: Mechanics, fracture behavior, and finite element analysis

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

How processing by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) or traditional chairside fabrication techniques affects the presence of defects and the mechanical properties of interim dental prostheses is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the effects of CAD-CAM versus traditional chairside material processing on the fracture and biomechanical behavior of 4-unit interim prostheses with and without a cantilever.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Two types of 4-unit interim prostheses were fabricated with abutments on the first premolar and first mandibular molar, one from a prefabricated CAD-CAM block and one with a traditional chairside polymer-monomer autopolymerizing acrylic resin (n=10). Both groups were assessed by compressive strength testing and additionally with or without a cantilevered second molar by using a universal testing machine with a 5-kN load cell. A finite element model (FEM) was built by scanning both prosthesis designs. Finite element analysis (FEA) replicated the experimental conditions to evaluate the stress distribution through the prostheses.

RESULTS

Interim fixed prostheses manufactured by CAD-CAM showed significantly higher mean fracture loading values (3126 N to 3136 N) than for conventionally made interim fixed prostheses (1287 N to 1390 N) (P=.001). The presence of a cantilever decreased the fracture loading mean values for CAD-CAM (1954 N to 2649 N), although the cantilever did not influence the traditional prostheses (1268 N to 1634 N). The highest von Mises stresses were recorded by FEA on the occlusal surface, with the cantilever design, and at the transition region (connector) between the prosthetic teeth.

CONCLUSIONS

Interim partial prostheses produced by CAD-CAM had a higher strength than those manufactured traditionally. The presence of a cantilever negatively affected the strength of the prostheses, although the structures manufactured by CAD-CAM still revealed high strength and homogenous stress distribution on occlusal loading.

Strength and stiffness of interim materials and interim fixed dental prostheses when tested at different loading rates

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

How the loading rate might affect the mechanical properties of interim materials and interim fixed dental prostheses is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the material stiffness, material strength, and structural strength of interim 3-unit fixed dental prostheses fabricated from 3 interim materials when stressed at different loading rates.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Bar-shaped specimens and anatomically correct interim 3-unit fixed dental prostheses with a modified-ridge lap pontic were fabricated from polyethyl methacrylate resin (Trim) and 2 bis-acrylic composite resins (TempSmart; Integrity) (n=10). Flexural modulus and strength of the bar specimens, representing material stiffness and strength, were determined with a 4-point bend test in a universal testing machine. The structural strength of the prosthesis was assessed from the failure load from a vertical force applied on the occlusal surface of the pontic. Three loading rates, 0.5, 5, or 10 mm/min, were evaluated. Results were statistically analyzed with 2-way analysis of variance and multiple comparisons (α=.05).

RESULTS

Loading rate and material significantly affected flexural modulus, flexural strength, and structural strength (P<.05). Increasing loading rate significantly increased the flexural modulus of all materials (P<.05), but the effect of loading rate on the flexural strength of bis-acrylic composite resins was mostly insignificant. Polyethyl methacrylate specimens did not fracture when loaded at 0.5 or 5 mm/min, and the interim fixed dental prostheses made from polyethyl methacrylate did not fracture at the 0.5 mm/min loading rate. Dual-polymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin had significantly higher flexural modulus and strengths than autopolymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin.

CONCLUSIONS

Polyethyl methacrylate resin had the lowest stiffness among the interim materials tested and did not fracture but excessively deformed at the low loading rate. Dual-polymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin consistently had higher stiffness and material strength and provided higher structural strength than the autopolymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin. Loading rate significantly affected the mechanical properties of polyethyl methacrylate resin (P<.05), but the effect was indistinct for the bis-acrylic materials.

Nanofilled bis-acryl composite resin materials: Is it necessary to polish?

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Manufacturers of the recently introduced nanofilled bis-acryl composite resins no longer recommend polishing to produce interim restorations; however, whether this advice is appropriate is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the type of interim resin material, polishing procedure, and artificial staining on surface roughness, gloss, and color.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Disk-shaped specimens were prepared from 1 unfilled acrylic resin (Duralay) and 3 bis-acryl composite resins (Structur 3-nanofilled, Systemp C&B-microhybrid, Proviplast-microhybrid). The specimens of each material were assigned to 2 subgroups (n=15): polished and unpolished. Surface roughness (Ra-μm), gloss (UB), and color (ΔE) were analyzed at baseline and after 14 days of artificial staining. Roughness and gloss data were separately analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and color by 2-way ANOVA, followed by the post hoc Tukey test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The baseline roughness of all materials was significantly reduced by the polishing procedure, whereas the baseline gloss was increased (P<.001). Only the unpolished Proviplast had a significant increase in Ra values after aging. Structur 3 had higher gloss than Systemp C&B and Proviplast. The acrylic resin had the lowest color change after staining.

CONCLUSIONS

The polishing procedure produced smother and glossier surfaces for all the materials tested. The nanofilled bis-acryl composite resin material had higher gloss than the microhybrid bis-acryls tested, but it was not different from the acrylic resin. The 14 days of artificial staining did not promote significant changes in Ra or gloss values, except for Ra in the unpolished Proviplast subgroup, indicating excellent performance of the materials. The acrylic resin had the highest color stability.

Assessment of the Adaptation of Interim Crowns using Different Measurement Techniques

PURPOSE

To compare the internal fit and marginal discrepancy of acrylic resin interim crowns fabricated by different manufacturing methods, and to test the consistency of measuring marginal discrepancy and internal fit between different measuring techniques.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A dentoform mandibular left first molar was prepared for an all-ceramic crown. Thirty-six interim crowns were fabricated and divided into three groups (n = 12): group BAC (Bis-acrylic composite, fabricated manually), group CAM (CAD/CAM polymethylmethacrylate resin, milled), and group 3DP (3D printed methacrylic oligomers, printed). The internal fit of the interim crowns was evaluated by the silicone replica technique and by X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT) technique. The marginal discrepancy of the interim crowns was evaluated by the vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) (Aquasil Ultra XLV) impression technique and by optical coherence tomography (OCT) technique. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Turkey tests at α = 0.05. Pearson correlation test was used to evaluate the correlation between the different measurement techniques and marginal discrepancy/internal fit.

RESULTS

The manually fabricated interim crowns (group BAC) had significantly greater discrepancy of internal fit than did the digitally fabricated crowns (group CAM and group 3DP) measured by both silicone replica technique and µCT 2-dimensional (2D) image measurement. There were no statistically significant differences in the cement space volume values obtained by the µCT image technique between group BAC and group 3DP (p = 0.285). The coefficient of determination between the two volumetric measurement techniques was low (R² = 0.30). For marginal discrepancy, the manually fabricated interim crowns had a wider absolute marginal discrepancy than both digitally fabricated groups (p < 0.05). In both the VPS impression and OCT assessment, there was no statistically significant difference between group CAM and group 3DP (p = 0.798 and 0.994, respectively). The coefficient of determination between the VPS impression and OCT techniques for marginal discrepancy measurement was low (R² = 0.23).

CONCLUSIONS

Digitally fabricated interim crowns (group CAM and group 3DP) had better internal fit and smaller marginal discrepancy than manually fabricated interim crowns (group BAC). For comparison of the different evaluation techniques, the silicone replica technique and µCT measurements had low correlation for internal fit assessment, as did the PVS impression and OCT techniques for marginal discrepancy test.

Simple and Low-Cost Thermal Treatments on Direct Resin Composites for Indirect Use

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of three low-cost additional thermal treatments, available in the dental office, on the mechanical, chemical and optical properties of a light-cured resin composite indicated for direct restorations but used as indirect restorative. The direct resin composite TPH3 (Dentsply) was light-polymerized using a light-emitting diode curing unit and submitted to three experimental additional thermal treatments: dry heat at 170 °C for 5 min, autoclave at 121 °C for 6 min, or microwave oven at 450 W for 3 min. The resin composite without any thermal treatment was used as negative control group. An indirect resin composite (Vita CM LC, Vita Zahnfabrik) was tested as a reference. Flexural strength, elastic modulus, microhardness, degree of C=C conversion, roughness before and after simulated toothbrush abrasion, translucency parameter and color difference (ΔE00) were evaluated. Data were analyzed at α=0.05. The indirect resin composite presented lower C=C conversion and mechanical performance. The flexural strength was significantly higher in the dry oven group compared with the control. The roughness was not different among groups before or after brushing, but the thermal treatments caused an increase in C=C conversion, microhardness, and elastic modulus without affecting the translucency parameter or showing visible color alteration (ΔE00<1.8). These results suggest that the use of additional thermal methods of polymerization represents an economical and simple alternative to enhance the mechanical and chemical properties of direct resin composites when used as indirect restoratives.

Polishing Methods' Influence on Color Stability and Roughness of 2 Provisional Prosthodontic Materials

PURPOSE

To evaluate the roughness and color change of a conventional acrylic resin and a bis-acryl resin, submitted to different types of polishing and exposed to a staining solution.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred specimens were manufactured from an autopolymerizing conventional acrylic resin (Duralay, shade 66) (n = 50) and a bis-acryl resin (Protemp 4, shade A3) (n = 50) according to the manufacturers' instructions. Specimens were subdivided into 10 groups (n = 10), according to the type of resin and polishing method, including no-polishing (control groups for acrylic resin [tungsten bur finishing] and bis-acryl resin [cotton and alcohol]), Enhance System, Edenta kit, Labordental kit, and sandpaper. The specimens were immersed in a staining solution (coffee at 60°C) for 7 days. Surface roughness was evaluated before the first immersion (baseline - Ra1) and after 7 days (Ra2). The color change (∆E) was determined after 24 hours (∆E1) and 7 days (∆E2), by CIE L^* a^* b^* scale. Data were statistically analyzed with 3-way ANOVA for repeated measures test and Tukey test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

According to 3-way ANOVA test, material, polishing techniques, and polishing*material factors exhibited statistically significant influence (p < 0.0001) on the roughness, and, for color change, material, polishing techniques, time, polishing*material, and material*time factors were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The polishing techniques successfully reduced the surface roughness of acrylic resin groups, when compared to control (p < 0.001), but for bis-acryl resin, results were not different from the control group (Enhance: p = 0.954, Edenta: p = 0.866, sandpaper: p = 0.366, Labordental: p = 0.945). Surface roughness was not affected by the immersion in staining solution for 7 days. Color change of acrylic resin groups after 24 hours and 7 days of immersion exhibited a clinically acceptable value (ΔE < 3.7) with the exception of the Enhance group, and all bis-acryl resin groups exhibited a clinically unacceptable color change value (ΔE > 3.7) independent of polishing technique and time interval (∆E1 and ∆E2).

CONCLUSIONS

Roughness of both materials was similar when the polishing techniques studied were performed, although Ra values were superior to the clinically acceptable values (0.20 µm), and were not affected by the immersion protocol studied; however, when esthetics are critical, the selection of material type is more important than the surface treatment technique used, and bis-acryl resin was more susceptible to clinically unacceptable color change after immersion in a staining solution.

Effect of mouthwashes on the integrity of composite resin and resin modified glass ionomer: In vitro study

Background

The constant search for an improved esthetic dental material has led investigators to realize that its performance depends on the conditions where the material is used. It has been probed that the contact with mouth rinses triggers alterations, reason why the aim of this study was to identify their possible effects of it on the integrity of nanohybrid composite resin and resin modified glass ionomer.

Material and Methods

A total of 144 samples were manufactured with two nanohybrid composite resins and two resin modified glass ionomer restorative materials. The specimens were immersed in one of the three mouthwashes used in the study, for a total of 1092 minutes, with intervals of contact with artificial saliva. This strategy simulates three years of constant use of mouthwashes. The samples weight and surface roughness measurement was recorded with a precision scale and profilometer, at different stages: At the beginning of the study, after 546 minutes (simulating one and a half year), and after 1092 minutes (simulating three years).

Results

The collected data on surface roughness and weight were submitted to the analysis of variance (ANOVA), with repeated measures of three factors. The results determined shifts in values in terms of weight and roughness in all the samples. The composite resin “Grandio” group was the one that showed bigger shifts, while the glass ionomer group “Vitremer” showed stability on its structure. The evaluated mouthwashes displayed similar behavior between each other.

Conclusions

The use of mouthwashes triggered changes on the structure of both dental materials: composite resin and resin modified glass ionomer mostly associated with surface roughness.
