Abstract
The aim of this research was evaluation of the influence of distance between zwitterionic monomer ions on the performance of superabsorbents. For this purpose, two zwitterionic monomers 4-(3-aminopropyl) amino-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (APOB) and 4-(6-aminohexyl) amino-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (AHOB) were prepared and applied for synthesis of two new superabsorbents through graft copolymerization onto hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) in the presence of acrylic acid (AA). In synthesis of superabsorbents factors such as the highest water absorbency capacity, absorbency rate, gel strength, and environmental problems should be resolved or improved. The results demonstrated that the water absorbency capacity and rate parameters (τ) of HEC-g-p(AA-co-APOB) and HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) in distilled water were 986.62, 664.38 g/g, and 98.04, 140.84 min, respectively. The biodegradability of HEC-g-p(AA-co-APOB) was approximately 4 times more than HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB). However, based on the rheological analyses (G'/G″) HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) was stronger than the other. Additionally, studies of water retention on soil containing HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) superabsorbent (soil with 0.25 wt% material) showed that the after 30 days has ≤5 % water while soil in the absence of superabsorbent after 10 days completely dried. Studies of the growth of plants in soil demonstrated in the presence of HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) the average length of shoots was 36 cm while without superabsorbent were 25 cm.

Abstract
Abstract
In this work, polymeric composite films were fabricated utilizing stable, non-toxic, soluble, low-cost, good mechanical, and biocompatible polymers such as CMC and PVA with the waste of one of the most current fruits consumed worldwide banana peel waste (BP) as a filler. Sequences of carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol/banana peel (CMC/PVA/BP) composite films with various amounts of BP utilizing eco-friendly technique (electron beam) (EB) irradiation were prepared to eliminate common hazardous organic pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) dye from its solutions. Physical characteristics like; swelling and gel % were examined. The chemical structure, thermal stability, and surface morphology were examined utilizing FT-IR, TGA, DSC, XRD, EDX, and SEM. Additionally, the UV/Vis spectroscopy study was investigated to study the impact of the various parameters such as irradiation, contact time, pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration on removal efficiency % of MB dye onto the prepared composite films. The adsorption process fitted with the Langmuir model, pseudo-second-order kinetic model, endothermic, favorable, and spontaneous. The adsorption capacity of MB dye onto the CMC/PVA/BP composite film was 19.6 mg/g at the optimum conditions: irradiation dose = 20 kGy, contact time = 120 min, pH = 10, temperature = 25 °C, adsorbent dosage = 0.1 g and initial conc. = 10 mg/L.

Abstract
The use of biodegradable polyesters derived from green sources and their combination with natural abundantly layered aluminosilicate clay, e.g., natural montmorillonite, meets the requirements for the development of new sustainable, disposable, and biodegradable organic dye sorbent materials. In this regard, novel electrospun composite fibers, based on poly β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and in situ synthesized poly(vinyl formate) (PVF), loaded with protonated montmorillonite (MMT-H) were prepared via electrospinning in the presence of formic acid, a volatile solvent for polymers and a protonating agent for the pristine MMT-Na. The morphology and structure of electrospun composite fibers were investigated through SEM, TEM, AFM, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. The contact angle (CA) measurements showed increased hydrophilicity of the composite fibers incorporated with MMT-H. The electrospun fibrous mats were evaluated as membranes for removing cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (Congo red) dyes. PHB/MMT 20% and PVF/MMT 30% showed significant performance in dye removal compared with the other matrices. PHB/MMT 20% was the best electrospun mat for adsorbing Congo red. The PVF/MMT 30% fibrous membrane exhibited the optimum activity for the adsorption of methylene blue and Congo red dyes.

Abstract
The development of sustainable functional materials with strong potential to be applied in different areas has been growing and gaining increasing interest to address the environmental impact of current materials and technologies. In this scope, this work reports on sustainable functional materials with electrochromic properties, based on their increasing interest for a variety of applications, including sensing technologies. The materials have been developed based on a natural derived polymer, carrageenan, in which different amounts of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([EMIM][SCN]) were blended. It is shown that the addition of different amounts of IL to the carrageenan matrix does not affect the properties of the samples in terms of morphology or physicochemical and thermal properties, the most significant difference being the increase of the ionic conductivity with increasing IL content, ranging from 2.3 × 10-11 S·cm-1 for pristine carrageenan to 4.6 × 10-4 S·cm-1 for the samples with 5 and 60 wt % IL content, respectively. A electrochromic device has been developed based on the different IL/carrageenan samples as electrolyte and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as electrodes. Spectroelectrochemistry testing demonstrates functional devices at low voltages between 0.3 and -0.9 V. Among the different samples, the one with 15 wt % IL content presents the best conditions for application, presenting an oxidation time of 6 s, a reduction time of 8 s, and a charge density of 1150 and 1050 μC·cm-2 for oxidation and reduction, respectively. The same sample also presents excellent optical density as a function of load density, presenting an optical switch (Δ%Tx) of 99%. Thus, it is demonstrated that it is possible to develop high efficiency and sustainable electrochromic devices based on natural polymers and ionic liquids.

Abstract
Cationization is a promising chemical modification technique that improves properties by attaching permanent positive charges to the backbone of biopolymers. Carrageenan is a widely available and non-toxic polysaccharide, commonly used in food industry but with low solubility in cold water. We performed a central composite design experiment to check the parameters that most influence the degree of cationic substitution and the film solubility. Hydrophilic quaternary ammonium groups on the carrageenan backbone enhance interaction in drug delivery systems and create active surfaces. Statistical analysis indicated that within the studied range, only the molar ratio between the cationizing reagent and the repeating disaccharide unit of carrageenan had a significant effect. Optimized parameters using 0.086 g of sodium hydroxide and glycidyltrimethylammonium/disaccharide repeating unit of 6.83 achieved 65.47 % degree of substitution and 4.03 % solubility. Characterizations confirmed the effective incorporation of cationic groups into the commercial structure of carrageenan and thermal stability improvement of the derivatives.

Abstract
Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection that affects mainly individuals with weakened immune system. Devices used in the oral area to treat this condition include buccal films, which present advantages over both oral tablets and gels. Since candidiasis causes pain, burning, and itching, the purpose of this work was to develop buccal films loaded with both lidocaine (anesthetic) and miconazole nitrate (MN, antifungal) to treat this pathology topically. MN was loaded in microparticles based on different natural polymers, and then, these microparticles were loaded in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-gelatin-based films containing lidocaine. All developed films showed adequate adhesiveness and thickness. DSC and XRD tests suggested that the drugs were in an amorphous state in the therapeutic systems. Microparticles based on chitosan-alginate showed the highest MN encapsulation. Among the films, those containing the mentioned microparticles presented the highest tensile strength and the lowest elongation at break, possibly due to the strong interactions between both polymers. These films allowed a fast release of lidocaine and a controlled release of MN. Due to the latter, these systems showed antifungal activity for 24 h. Therefore, the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis with these films could reduce the number of daily applications with respect to conventional treatments.

Abstract
Uncovering the value of waste materials is one of the keys to sustainability. In this current work, valorization of chitosan was pursued to fabricate a novel modified chitosan functional hydrogel using a process-efficient protocol. The fabrication proceeds by a one-pot and single-step C-Mannich condensation of chitosan (3% w/v), glutaraldehyde (20 eq.), and 4-hydroxycoumarin (40 eq.) at 22 °C in 3% v/v acetic acid. The Mannich base modified chitosan hydrogel (CS-MB) exhibits a dual-responsive swelling behavior in response to pH and temperature that has not been observed in any other hydrogel systems. Combining the pre-defined optimal swelling pH (pH = 4) and temperature (T = 22 °C), the CS-MB was screened for its Cu2+ adsorption capacity at this condition. The CS-MB achieved an optimal adsorption capacity of 12.0 mg/g with 1.2 g/L adsorbent dosage after 36 h with agitation. The adsorption of Cu2+ on the surface of CS-MB was verified by EDS, and an overview of the adsorption sites was exhibited by FT-IR. The simply fabricated novel CS-MB hydrogel under investigation presents a unique response to external stimuli that exhibits a promise in heavy metal removal from aqueous media.

Abstract
In this work physical carrageenan/chitosan (Car/Chit) hydrogels are prepared by electrostatic complexation between the two oppositely charged polysaccharides. The hydrogels have storage moduli in the order of 5-10 kPa and swelling ratios in the order of 5000-6000 %. At conditions where both polysaccharides are highly charged (pH 5) the swelling ratios are lower than the ones at conditions of lower dissociation i.e., at pH 2 and 7 and the opposite trend is found for the storage modulus. Chit appears to act as a crosslinker for Car as increasing its concentration the swelling ratio decreases and the moduli increase. The hydrogels can incorporate the nanoclay Laponite (Lap) and form hybrid nanocomposites where the intercalation by the two biopolymers leads to exfoliation of the clay nanoplatelets in the presence of both Car and Chit. The composite hydrogels retain the mechanical properties of the Car/Chit hydrogels at the studied pH range (pH 2 to pH 7). This shows the prepared hydrogels can be potentially used as multifunctional biomaterials for drug delivery, tissue engineering and bone regeneration applications.

Abstract
Herein, core-superabsorbent polymer (CSAP) composites are prepared from oxidized starch (OS) via aqueous solution copolymerization using ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate as the inner-crosslinker. The surface-crosslinking process is performed using various surface-crosslinkers, including bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE), ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDGE), and diglycidyl ether (DGE). The structures of the CSAP composites and their surface-crosslinked SAPs (SSAPs) are characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, their absorption properties are measured via centrifuge retention capacity (CRC), absorbency under load (AUL), permeability, and re-swellability tests, and their gel strengths according to surface-crosslinker type and EGDGE content are examined via rheological analysis. The results indicate that an EGDGE content of 0.75 mol provides the optimum surface-crosslinking and SSAP performance, with a CRC of 34.8 g/g, an AUL of 27.2 g/g, and a permeability of 43 s. The surface-crosslinking of the CSAP composites using OS is shown to improve the gel strength, thus enabling the SAP to be used in disposable diapers.

Abstract
Binary (AC, AG), ternary (ACG, ACP, AGP), quaternary (ACGP) composite beads of alginate (A), carrageenan (C), gelatin (G), and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (P) were prepared. The dried beads had a 700 μm average diameter. The microspheres with and without P were characterized by FT-IR, TGA/DTA, SEM, and PZC analysis. The results proved that the features of the composites were completely different from their bare components. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level to enlighten the elementary physical and chemical properties of A, C, P, and G compounds. The vibrational modes obtained by calculations were compared with those observed in the FT-IR spectra. The Frontier Molecular Orbital (FMO) analyses showed that the component G was the softer and had smaller energy gap than the other components and vice versa for component P. NBO (Natural Bond Orbital) analyses implied that the n → П* (resonance) interactions for components A, G, and P contributed to the lowering of the molecular stabilization, whereas that the n → σ* (anomeric) interactions were responsible for decreasing of the stabilization of the component. From the obtained results, these kinds of components can be hoped the promising materials for usage in the many scientific fields, especially in medicine and in drug design.

Abstract
The controlled release of drug from drug carrier has been a point of concern for the researchers to ensure the bioavailability of drug with reduced side effects. The formulation in this study is based upon biopolymers; carrageenan (CG), sodium alginate (SA) and various molecular weights of polyethylene glycol (PEG), cross-linked with (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, APTES for the sustained release of model drug (lidocaine). The physicochemical properties of the formulated hydrogel blends include bonding pattern (using Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), swelling study, antimicrobial activity and morphology of hydrogel films was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The as-prepared hydrogels show an improved cell compatibility against 3T3 cell line as well as cell proliferation and kinetics of drug release showed that these hydrogels are potential for controlled release of lidocaine, a numbing agent. GAP 60 exhibited maximum swelling percent (910%) and was employed to load the drug. By using in vitro model, the drug release was studied in PBS solution. Non-Fickian and other kinetic models (Zero order, Higuchi, Hixson, Korsmeyer Peppas and Baker-Lonsdale) for diffusion were followed in results. The improved properties showed that the formulated hydrogels can easily be used for the sustain drug release studies.

Abstract
In this study, sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) was successfully modified by using n-hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) via cationic exchange to obtain an organophilic-montmorillonite (CTAB-MMT). The Na-MMT, CTAB-MMT, and a commercial montmorillonite, that is, Cloisite15A were incorporated into gellan gum (GG) hydrogel and their mechanical, physical, thermal properties, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activities were investigated. The mechanical performance results show that the GG hydrogels containing Cloisite15A required smallest volume to achieve optimum compression stress, modulus, and compression strain at 5% (w/w) compared to both Na-MMT and CTAB-MMT at 10% (w/w). Swelling ratio of GG hydrogels increased upon addition of MMT, and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) values of all hydrogels were in the range of 1106–1890 g m−2 d−1, which were comparable to WVTR values of commercial wound dressings. Thermal behavior shows that the inclusion of Cloisite15A in GG hydrogel improved the thermal stability than its counterparts. Cell studies exhibit that the GG incorporated with Na-MMT is non-cytotoxic to human skin fibroblast cells (CRL2522), and in contrast, the GG hydrogels incorporated CTAB-MMT and Cloisite15A revealed that the cells were dying and the cell growth depleted after being cultured for 72 h. Qualitative antibacterial study revealed that GG hydrogel containing CTAB-MMT only in the sample exhibits inhibition against the Gram-positive bacteria, that is, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, while there was no inhibition exhibited against Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae).

Abstract
The search for excipients to replace microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in the production of pellets by extrusion-spheronization in cases of drug incompatibility or the lack of pellet matrix disintegration forms the basis of this study. A combination of к-carrageenan as a spheronization aid, chitosan as a diluent and Carbopol(®) 974P as a binder in the production of pellets containing no MCC has been investigated using acetaminophen as a model drug. Design of experiments allowed assessment of formulation and processing effects on pellet responses that included size, shape, fines, yield and friability. Statistical analysis revealed that the main factors and some of the two-factor interactions had a significant effect on pellet characteristics. Formulations containing high levels of к-carrageenan required more water to produce a wetted mass with good extrudability and extrudate capable of being spheronized. Although only a low level of Carbopol was used in the formulation, it imparted cohesiveness to the wetted mass as well as the extrudate. Furthermore, it was discovered that Carbopol could act as an extrusion aid, enabling the wetted mass to flow easily through the extruder screen holes without building up heat. Spherical and rugged pellets were produced that met the immediate release criterion.

Abstract
A novel nano-bio composite polypyrrole (PPy)/kappa-carrageenan(KC) was fabricated and characterized for application as a cathode catalyst in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). High resolution SEM and TEM verified the bud-like shape and uniform distribution of the PPy in the KC matrix. X-ray diffraction (XRD) has approved the amorphous structure of the PPy/KC as well. The PPy/KC nano-bio composites were then studied as an electrode material, due to their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) ability as the cathode catalyst in the MFC and the results were compared with platinum (Pt) as the most common cathode catalyst. The produced power density of the PPy/KC was 72.1 mW/m(2) while it was 46.8 mW/m(2) and 28.8 mW/m(2) for KC and PPy individually. The efficiency of the PPy/KC electrode system is slightly lower than a Pt electrode (79.9 mW/m(2)) but due to the high cost of Pt electrodes, the PPy/KC electrode system has potential to be an alternative electrode system for MFCs.
