Reasons for Use of Electronic Cigarettes, Cigars, and Hookah in Pregnant Women in Rhode Island: A Preliminary Study

BACKGROUND

The current study examined reasons pregnant women in Rhode Island use non-cigarette nicotine/tobacco products during and prior to pregnancy.

METHODS

Of the 124 pregnant women in Rhode Island enrolled in the study, 91% self-reported ever using e- cigarettes, hookah or cigars, and reasons for their use. We compared responses between participants who used these products during pregnancy (prenatal) and those who used prior to pregnancy (lifetime) for each product separately.

RESULTS

Participants reported using e-cigarettes as a cessation aid, hookah for entertainment, and cigars as a vehicle for marijuana consumption as primary reasons for use. There were no significant differences in reasons for using hookah or cigars between prenatal and lifetime users, but prenatal e-cigarette users were more likely to report affordability as a reason for use compared to lifetime e-cigarette users.

CONCLUSIONS

Differential reasons for use by tobacco product may have implications for targeted interventions in pregnant people in Rhode Island.

Discussion of waterpipe tobacco smoking on reddit

Objectives

This study aimed to examine public discussions of waterpipe tobacco smoking, as well as the potential associations of different waterpipe flavors with health symptoms, using Reddit data.

Study design

This is an observational infodemiology study.

Methods

Using keywords such as “waterpipe”, “hookah”, and “shisha”, Reddit posts were extracted from Reddit Archive (pushshift.io) between February 1, 2016, and December 31, 2020. Temporal analysis was used to understand the longitudinal trend of the discussions about waterpipe tobacco smoking. Topic modeling using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model was performed to examine the topics on waterpipe tobacco. We estimated the conditional probability of having each health problem for each given waterpipe flavor.

Results

The discussion of waterpipe on Reddit was slowly decreasing from 2016 to 2018 and surged until May 2020. The fruit was the most popular waterpipe flavor and the neurological symptom was the most mentioned health category in waterpipe-related Reddit posts. The most popular topics included “Friends spending time together at night with waterpipe smoking”, “Playing games and smoking waterpipe at a hookah bar”, and “Discussing waterpipe flavors and related products”. Some waterpipe flavors were more associated with certain health problems than others. For example, mint/menthol flavor had a high probability to be associated with symptoms related to throat and mouth.

Conclusion

This study provided longitudinal surveillance of waterpipe tobacco smoking discussed on Reddit. We showed the potential relationship between waterpipe flavors and health symptoms, which provides preliminary evidence about the potential health effects of waterpipe tobacco smoking.

Prevalence and predictors of waterpipe smoking cessation among young adults in the US: Findings from a population-based study

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of waterpipe tobacco (WPT) smoking is 9.2 % among young adults aged 18-24 years in the United State (US). Adequate understanding of the factors predicting WPT smoking cessation among the young population is essential to tobacco control efforts. This study assessed the prevalence and predictors of WPT smoking cessation among young adults.

METHODS

The population assessment of tobacco and health (PATH) study data (waves 1-5) was used for the study. A total sample of 561 young adults exclusively using WPT (past 30-days) was used for the analysis. The probability of WPT smoking cessation (no use in the past 12 months) was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier survival method, and the predictors were assessed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model.

RESULTS

During the five waves, 25.1 % of the young adult WPT smokers quit smoking. Among them, 58.2 % were females and the remaining 41.8 % were males. The Hispanics (40.2 %) had the highest rate of cessation among the ethnic groups. Regret smoking (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 2.33, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.24-4.36), smoking restriction at home (aHR = 2.86, 95 % CI = 1.41-5.88), and living in Midwest geographical region (aHR = 2.11, 95 % CI = 1.16-3.84) increased the likelihood whereas alcohol use (aHR = 0.62, 95 % CI = 0.41-0.93) decreased the likelihood of cessation among the young adult WPT smokers.

CONCLUSIONS

Communicating the health and economic consequences associated with WPT smoking (e.g., pictorial health warning labels), involving smoker's household members in WPT awareness campaigns, and closing regulatory loopholes related to WPT venues will increase the WPT smoking cessation rate among the young population in the US.

Psychosocial predictors of longitudinal changes in tobacco and cannabis use among young adults

INTRODUCTION

In recent years, cigarette use has decreased, but alternative tobacco product and cannabis use has increased in young adults. Thus, research regarding intraindividual changes in tobacco product and cannabis use in this population, and related psychosocial predictors, is warranted.

METHODS

We analyzed data from 3,006 young adults (Mage = 24.56 [SD = 4.72], 54.8% female, 31.6% sexual minority, 60.2% racial/ethnic minority) in a 2-year, 5-wave longitudinal study (2018-2020). Latent growth modeling analyzed the outcomes of past 6-month use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, traditional cigars, little cigars/cigarillos, smokeless tobacco (SLT), hookah, and cannabis across Waves 1-5 among all participants; psychosocial predictors included depressive symptoms, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and personality traits.

RESULTS

Results indicated decreases in likelihood of using each tobacco product over time, but no significant change in likelihood of cannabis use. Psychosocial predictors of baseline use across products included depressive symptoms and extraversion, as well as ACEs and openness for nearly all products (e.g., except traditional cigars). Psychosocial predictors of less decreases in use likelihood over time included: for cigarettes and traditional cigars, ACEs; for e-cigarettes, extraversion; for little cigars/cigarillos, depressive symptoms and extraversion; for SLT, openness; and for hookah, neuroticism (controlling for sociodemographics). Predictors of greater decreases in likelihood of use over time included: for e-cigarettes and hookah, conscientiousness; and for cannabis, agreeableness.

CONCLUSIONS

Interventions to reduce young adults' use might target distinct risk/protective factors for using different products (and combinations). Moreover, results regarding decreasing likelihood of using tobacco products but not cannabis over time warrant replication and explanation in other samples.

Water Pipe as Growing Public Health Challenge Among School Children in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

INTRODUCTION

The water pipe is a form of tobacco smoking that recently become very popular among youth in many countries all over the globe.

AIM

To highlight recent data collected through Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) 2019, related to knowledge, attitudes and behavior of school children and youth to water pipe consumption.

METHODS

The GYTS questionnaire for the Federation of BiH 2019 contained 60 multiple-choice questions. The GYTS 2019 in the Federation of BiH was conducted in a total of 73 of the 75 sampled primary and secondary schools with a school response rate of 97.3%. From the 6,972 sampled students a total of 6,415 participated as eligible students in grades 8-9 of primary and 1st grade of secondary school, with a response rate for students of 92.0%.

RESULTS

Survey findings show that almost half (44.1%) of the school children confirm ever smoking the water pipe, while Current smoking of water pipe is confirmed by 16.1% school children.

CONCLUSION

There is a substantial need for implementing of systematic and inter sectorial tobacco control measures that involves a water pipe as new public health challenge among youth.

Use of Tobacco Products in Turkish Children and Young People: Is there an Alarm for Hookah Use?

OBJECTIVES

In the recent years, it has been observed that the use of hookah, a tobacco product, has increased in children and young people in Turkey. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of cigarette and hookah use in children and young people specific to age and gender and to define the factors relevant to the use of hookah.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study was conducted with secondary/high school students between 11 and 17 years of age (Survey 1, n=4718) and with university students between 18 and 23 years of age (Survey 2, n=1588) as two groups, which made a total of 6306 students. The students were asked to fill in a questionnaire which consisted of questions about socio-demographic data and the use of tobacco and tobacco products.

RESULTS

It was determined that the use of cigarette and hookah was high in males, and it increased as the age increased in both genders (p<0.05). It was also determined that parents and friends using cigarette and hookah affected the use of cigarette and hookah in the study groups in both surveys (p<0.05). Additionally, it was determined that the educational level of the parents and being of a high social class were the social determiners of hookah use (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

It is important that we fight against the use of all tobacco products, especially in young people. Education about the damages of tobacco and applying tobacco products should start at an early age, and accurate tobacco control models may provide support in this field.
