Abstract
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality after trauma. Here, we integrate plasma metabolomics and proteomics to evaluate the metabolic alterations and their function in up to 680 individuals with and without DVT after trauma (pt-DVT). We identify 28 metabolites and 2 clinical parameter clusters associated with pt-DVT. Then, we develop a panel of 9 metabolites (hexadecanedioic acid, pyruvic acid, L-Carnitine, serotonin, PE(P-18:1(11Z)/18:2(9Z,12Z)), 3-Hydroxycapric acid, 5,6-DHET, 3-Methoxybenzenepropanoic acid and pentanenitrile) that can predict pt-DVT with high performance, which can be verified in an independent cohort. Furthermore, the integration analysis of metabolomics and proteomics data indicates that the upregulation of glycolysis/gluconeogenesis-TCA cycle may promote thrombosis by regulating ROS levels in red blood cells, suggesting that interfering with this process might be potential therapeutic strategies for pt-DVT. Together, our study comprehensively delineates the metabolic and hematological dysregulations for pt-DVT, and provides potential biomarkers for early detection.

Abstract
Background Hip fractures primarily occur in older people and represent a significant public health issue due to their high incidence and mortality rate. The concurrent occurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) during the perioperative period exacerbates the threat to patient health. Methods We retrieved all articles related to hip fracture surgery and venous VTE from the Web of Science core collection database from 2000 to 2023. For bibliometric analysis, we extracted relevant information, including year of publication, country, institution, journal, impact factor, title, author, category, reference, keywords, number of citations, average number of citations, and H-index. Results A total of 1079 articles were retrieved, with 67 countries, 341 institutions, and 256 journals participating in research on hip fracture surgery and venous thromboembolism. The overall research showed an increasing trend. The United States, Harvard University, Injury-International Journal of The Care of The Injured, and Lassen MR are the leading country, institution, journal, and author respectively, in terms of publication. Research directions in this field mainly include the impact of preoperative anticoagulation on fracture surgery, intraoperative blood protection strategies, and postoperative prevention and treatment of VTE. Hotspots and trends in research include the relationship between direct oral anticoagulants and surgical timing, perioperative blood protection, intertrochanteric fractures, and geriatric traumatic fractures. Conclusions This study constructed the knowledge structure of hip fracture surgery and VTE and identified research hotspots and trends. Future research should focus on developing a prediction system for VTE in hip fracture surgery to guide individualized prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Hip fracture is a common injury in older adults; however, the optimal timing of surgical treatment remains undetermined in Japan. Therefore, this retrospective study aimed to ascertain the rate of early surgery among hip fracture patients and investigate its effectiveness, along with "regional clinical pathways" (patient plan of care devised by Japanese clinicians), in reducing the length of hospital stay (LOS) postoperatively. We hypothesized that performing early surgery along with a regional clinical pathway is effective to reduce the postoperative LOS and complications among hip fracture patients. We examined the data of patients diagnosed with femoral neck and peritrochanteric fractures retrieved from the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database between April 2016 and March 2018. Patients were divided into the early (43,928, 34%; surgery within 2 days of admission) and delayed (84,237, 66%; surgery after 2 days of admission) surgery groups. The difference in postoperative LOS between the two groups was 3 days (early vs. delayed: 29 days vs. 32 days). The early surgery group had more cases of intertrochanteric fractures (57% vs. 43%) and internal fixation (74% vs. 55%) than did the delayed surgery group. In contrast, the delayed surgery group had more cases of femoral neck fractures (43% vs. 57%) and bipolar hip arthroplasty (25% vs. 42%) or total hip arthroplasty (1.2% vs. 3.0%). Moreover, the early surgery group showed a lower incidence of complications, except anemia (12% vs. 8.8%). Logistic regression analysis using the adjusted model revealed that early surgery and implementation of regional clinical pathways reduced LOS by 2.58 and 8.06 days, respectively (p<0.001). Early surgery and implementation of regional clinical pathways for hip fracture patients are effective in reducing postoperative LOS, allowing regional clinical pathways to have a greater impact. These findings will help acute care providers when treating hip fracture patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To dynamically observe the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after a hip fracture and analyze of the risk factors affecting the dynamic alteration of DVT. METHODS Data of patients with hip fractures from January 1, 2017 to August 31, 2021 were collected. Patients were divided into DVT and non-DVT groups according to their daily Doppler ultrasonography findings. Survival analysis was used to describe dynamic changes in DVT occurrence with time. Log-rank tests were used to compare the influence of individual factors of patients with DVT occurrence, and a Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to identify the risk factors affecting the dynamic alteration of DVT occurrence. RESULTS A total of 331 patients were included: 148(44.7%) had preoperative DVT, and 143 (96.6%) had DVT in the first 3days after admission. The probability of DVT was 0.42 on Day 1, 0.11 on Day 2, 0.10 on Day 3, 0.08 on Day 4, 0.20 on Day 5, and 0.00 on Day 6-7, with a median survival time of 3.30 d. Age>70 years, intertrochanteric fracture, admission hemoglobin<130g/L, and admission hematocrit<40% had a significantly higher occurrence rate of DVT. A hematocrit level of <40% (Hazard Ratio 2.079, 95% Confidence Interval:1.148-3.764, P = 0.016) was an independent risk factor for DVT. CONCLUSION DVT after hip fractures mainly occurred in the first three days after admission, the trend was stabilized within one week, and day 1 had the highest rate of DVT incidence. Age, fracture type, HGB level, and Hct level affected dynamic occurrence of DVT. At constant other factors, Hct<40% was 2.079-fold incidence in the risk of preoperative DVT formation than those with Hct≥40% after hip fracture.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to determine the associated risk factors for proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with lower extremity and pelvic-acetabular fractures. Methods The medical records of 4,056 patients with lower extremity and pelvic-acetabular fractures were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were classified into proximal or non-proximal DVT groups. Logistic regression models were used to determine the independent risk variables for proximal DVT. The predictive value of the related risk factors was further analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curves. Results The prevalence of proximal DVT was 3.16%. Sex, body mass index (BMI), fracture site, injury mechanism, diabetes, coronary heart disease (CHD), injury-to-admission interval, hematocrit, platelet counts, and D-dimer levels differed significantly between the two groups. BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2, femoral shaft fractures, high-energy injury, diabetes, injury-to-admission interval >24 h were independent risk factors for proximal DVT. CHD decreased the risk of proximal DVT. The platelet and D-dimer had high negative predictive value for predicting proximal DVT formation, with cut-off values of 174 × 109/L and 2.18 mg/L, respectively. Conclusion BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2, femoral shaft fractures, high-energy injury, diabetes, injury-to-admission interval >24 h were independent risk factors for proximal DVT in patients with lower extremity and pelvic-acetabular fractures. Platelet count and D-dimer level were effective indicators for excluding proximal DVT occurrence. CHD decreased the risk of proximal DVT.

Abstract
Background and objectives Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and secondary pulmonary embolism (PE), represents a significant complication post-hip fracture in the elderly. It is a prevalent cause of VTE-related complications, prolonged hospitalization, and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the potential of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) as a predictive marker for VTE in older patients following hip fracture. Methods The study was structured as an observational, analytical, retrospective cohort analysis. A total of 346 elderly patients diagnosed with hip fracture were included. We retrospectively collated clinical and laboratory data for these patients. Using the bootstrap method, the patients were divided in a 7:3 ratio into a training cohort (DVT group = 170 patients; no-DVT group = 72 patients) and an internal validation cohort (DVT group = 81 patients; no-DVT group = 23 patients). In the training cohort, relevant indices were initially identified using univariate analysis. Subsequently, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic analysis was employed to determine significant potential independent risk factors (P < 0.05). A dynamic online diagnostic nomogram was developed, with its discriminative ability assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The nomogram's accuracy was further appraised using calibration plots. The clinical utility of the nomogram was evaluated through decision curve analysis (DCA) and corroborated by internal validation within the training set. Results SII emerged as the sole independent risk factor identified from the multivariate logistic analysis of the training cohort and was incorporated into the VTE diagnostic nomogram for older patients' post-hip fracture. The nomogram demonstrated AUC values of 0.648 in the training cohort and 0.545 in the internal testing cohort. Calibration curves corroborated the close alignment of the nomogram's predicted outcomes with the ideal curve, indicating consistency between predicted and actual outcomes. The DCA curve suggested that all patients could derive benefit from this model. These findings were also validated in the validation cohort. Conclusion The systemic immune-inflammation index is a robust predictor of venous thromboembolism in elderly patients following hip fracture, underscoring its potential as a valuable tool in clinical practice.

Abstract
Aims This study aimed to establish a nomogram model for predicting the probability of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk in patients with hip fractures. Methods 504 patients were randomly assigned to the training set and validation set, and then divided into a DVT group and a non-DVT group. The study analysed the risk factors for DVT using univariate and multivariate analyses. Based on these parameters, a nomogram model was constructed and validated. The predicting performance of nomogram was evaluated by discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness. Results The predictors contained in the nomogram model included age, surgical approach, 1-day postoperative D-dimer value and admission ultrasound diagnosis of the lower limb vein. Furthermore, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the specific DVT risk-stratification nomogram model (0.815; 95% CI 0.746-0.884) was significantly higher than the current model (Caprini) (0.659; 95% CI 0.572-0.746, P < 0.05). According to the calibration plots, the prediction and actual observation were in good agreement. In the range of threshold probabilities of 0.2-0.8, the predictive performance of the model on DVT risk could be maximized. Conclusions The current predictive model could serve as a reliable tool to quantify the possibility of postoperative DVT in hip fractures patients.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk factors for postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with traumatic spinal fractures complicated with Spinal Cord Injury(SCI). We conducted a retrospective analysis of 110 patients with traumatic spinal fractures and SCI admitted to our hospital from March 2021 to April 2024. DVT was diagnosed using ultrasound. Patient history, general data, surgical data, laboratory tests, and thromboelastogram (TEG) results were collected. The patients were divided into a DVT group and a non-DVT group according to the results of ultrasound one week after surgery. The risk factors and diagnostic value were analyzed using binary logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in both univariate and multivariate analyses. Multivariate and ROC analysis results showed that D-dimer, lower extremity, duration of bedrest, and MA values of TEG were independent risk factors for DVT in SCI, with D-dimer having the highest diagnostic value (AUC = 0.883). The AUC values for lower extremity, duration of bedrest, and MA were 0.731, 0.750, and 0.625. In conclusion, Postoperative D-dimer > 5.065 mg/l, lower extremity < 3, duration of bedrest, and MA value of TEG are independent risk factors for postoperative DVT in SCI patients, D-dimer having the highest diagnostic value. When the above risk factors occur, clinicians need to be vigilant and take appropriate prevention and treatment measures.

Abstract
This study evaluated the association between body pH value and preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in geriatric hip fractures. Older adult patients with hip fractures were screened between January 2015 and September 2019. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were collected. Multivariate binary logistic regression and generalized additive models were used to identify the linear and nonlinear associations between pH value and preoperative DVT. Analyses were performed using EmpowerStats and R software. A total of 1465 patients were included in the study. DVT occurred in 476 (32.6%) of these admitted older adults. We observed a nonlinear association between the serum pH value and preoperative DVT in geriatric patients with hip fractures. A pH value of 7.39 was the inflection point in the curve, with pH highly correlated with DVT at pH < 7.39 (odds ratio [OR] 19.47; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.45-260.91; P = 0.0249). Patients with lower pH had a lower chance of preoperative DVT formation, and the risk of DVT increased 18.47-fold for every 0.1 unit change in pH. Although at pH > 7.39, pH was not correlated with DVT (OR 1.26; 95% CI 0.85-1.86; P = 0.2561), the odds of DVT did not vary with pH, and the highest risk of thrombosis was reached. The body pH value is nonlinearly associated with preoperative DVT in geriatric patients with hip fractures, and it could be considered a predictor of the risk of DVT.Registered information This study is registered in the website of Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR: ChiCTR2200057323).

Abstract
PURPOSE Hip fractures in the elderly are complicated by preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The objective of this study is to determine the usefulness of blood-based biomarkers, particularly the D-dimer-albumin ratio (DAR), in predicting preoperative DVT. METHODS A retrospective observational study was carried out on 1149 patients from a single hospital, and subsequently validated on an additional 626 patients from a separate hospital. The aim was to evaluate the prognostic and predictive value of 10 biomarkers, with a specific emphasis on DAR, in both cohorts. The primary measure of interest was the occurrence of preoperative DVT. RESULTS The ratio of D-dimer to albumin demonstrated superior predictive capability for preoperative DVT in older patients with hip fractures compared to other biomarkers (AUC = 0.677). Using the optimal cutoff point of 0.24, high DAR was significantly associated with preoperative DVT (OR 3.45, 95% CI 2.00-5.95). Notably, all the DAR definitions detailed above were successfully validated in an external, independent cohort. CONCLUSIONS DAR may be a valuable biomarker for predicting preoperative DVT in elderly patients with hip fractures.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to examine the impacts of DOACs compliance and prescribing preferences on clinical outcomes in elderly hip fracture patients with isolated calf deep vein thrombosis (ICDVT). Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study that evaluated 702 patients who underwent surgical treatment combined with ICDVT in an academic university hospital between January 2016 and October 2021. DOACs compliance was investigated through telephone and outpatient follow-up, and ICDVT clinical outcomes were collected 30 and 90 days post-discharge, respectively. Variables of interest were collected through the electronic medical record system, and data were analyzed after adjusting for predictors of non-completely dissolved (CD) of ICDVT. Results The DOACs compliance survey revealed that 375 (53.42%) patients were fully adherent, 270 (38.46%) were fairly adherent, and 57 (8.12%) were poorly adherent. Approximately 62% of patients had ICDVT dissipation within 30 days after discharge, reaching 94% within 90 days. DOACs QD/BID regimen is often based on economic status, activity capacity, discharge destination and post-operative weight-bearing activities (p<0.05).The mechanism of injury, ASA classification, surgical technique and timing of ICDVT formation were significantly correlated with DOACs 14/28 days regimen (p<0.05).Multivariate analysis revealed that rural patients [OR 1.518 (95% CI, 1.117-2.236)], pre-operative ICDVT[OR 2.816 (95% CI, 1.862-4.259)] and thrombus length [OR 1.157 (95% CI, 1.263-1.821)] were ICDVT risk factors for non-CD. Furthermore, DOACs fair compliance [OR 0.087 (95% CI, 0.042-0.178)], DOACs full compliance [OR 0.283 (95% CI, 0.139-0.579)], and hospitalization duration [OR 0.793 (95% CI, 0.694-0.907)] were ICDVT protective factors for CD. Conclusion Better compliance with DOACs benefits early ICDVT dissipation, but final clinical outcomes have to be validated with longer follow-up periods. When managing elderly patients with hip fractures, indications for anticoagulation should be considered and individualized protocols should be used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the most common complications of hip fracture surgeries, and it is unclear whether delayed surgery affects the incidence of VTE. This study aimed to examine the association between delayed surgery and VTE incidence by statistically adjusting for factors that may influence VTE incidence. METHODS We included 862 patients ≥ 65 years with hip fractures who underwent surgery between October 2010 and December 2020. We examined the effect of surgical delay 48 h after injury on postoperative VTE. Patients with and without VTE were assigned to groups V and NV, respectively. Those with and without proximal deep venous thrombosis (DVT) were assigned to PD and NPD groups, respectively. Univariate analysis was performed to identify factors that might influence DVT development. Risk factors for developing VTE and proximal DVT were analyzed using logistic regression analysis to determine whether delayed surgery was a risk factor. RESULTS VTE was observed in 436 patients (40%) and proximal DVT in 48 patients (5.6%). Univariate analysis showed significant differences in the time from trauma to surgery between the V and NV groups and between the PD and NPD groups. In multivariate analysis, surgery 48 h later was also a risk factor for developing VTE and proximal DVT. CONCLUSION A delay in surgery beyond 48 h after a hip fracture injury is a risk factor for developing VTE and proximal DVT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the association between serum albumin levels and preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in geriatric hip fractures. METHODS Older adult patients with hip fractures were screened between January 2015 and September 2019. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were collected. Multivariate binary logistic regression and generalized additive model were used to identify the linear and nonlinear association between albumin levels and preoperative DVT. Analyses were performed using EmpowerStats and the R software. RESULTS A total of 1819 patients were included in this study. The average age was 79.37 ± 6.88 years. There were 550 males and 1269 females. The preoperative albumin was 38.19 ± 4.07 g/L. There were 580 (31.89%) preoperative DVTs. Multivariate binary logistic regression showed that albumin level was associated with preoperative DVT (odds ratio [OR] = 0.94, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.91-0.97, P = 0.0002) after adjusting for confounding factors. The fully adjusted model showed a DVT risk decrease of 6% when albumin concentration increased by one g/L after controlling for confounding factors. In addition, the trend test and propensity score matching also showed a stable linear correlation between albumin level and preoperative DVT. CONCLUSION Serum albumin is associated with preoperative DVT in geriatric patients with hip fractures, and it could be considered a predictor for the risk of DVT. REGISTRATION ID ChiCTR2200057323.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for admission deep venous thrombosis (aDVT) and proximal aDVT in nonagenarians and centenarians with intertrochanteric fracture (IF). METHODS We collected statistics on nonagenarians and centenarians with IF admitting from January 2010 to October 2022. Patients with aDVT were considered as the aDVT group and those without aDVT as the non-aDVT group. Additionally, we also conducted a subgroup analysis based on the location of aDVT to investigate the predictors of proximal aDVT. The demographics, comorbidities and admission laboratory examinations of patients were computed by univariate analysis, logistic regression analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS In our study, the rate of aDVT (109 of 318) was 34.3%, and 5.7% (18 of 318) of patients had proximal aDVT. Logistic regression analysis showed that female patients and a high level of D-dimer were risk factors for aDVT. Similarly, hypoproteinemia and a high level of D-dimer were found to be risk factors for proximal aDVT. ROC curve analysis indicated the cut-off values of D-dimer to predict the aDVT and proximal aDVT were 1.28 mg/L and 1.485 mg/L, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings investigated the risk factors of aDVT and proximal aDVT in nonagenarians and centenarians with IF and identified the cut-off values of D-dimer, helping us assess the risk of aDVT and proximal aDVT to manage early targeted interventions. Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk of venous thromboembolism among orthopaedic trauma patients is high, but prevalence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) remains unknown. In addition, the Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) score in orthopaedic trauma patients is undetermined in previous research. This study is aimed to determine the incidence of DVT and then validate the Caprini RAM in orthopaedic trauma patients. METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study enrolling orthopaedic trauma inpatients from seven tertiary and secondary hospitals during a 3-year period (from April 1, 2018 through April 30, 2021). Caprini RAM scores were assessed by experienced nurses on admission. The patients with suspected DVT were verified through duplex ultrasonography by qualified radiologists, and then prospectively followed once a year after discharge. RESULTS In total, 34,893 patients were enrolled in our study. The Caprini RAM identified 45.7% of patients at low risk (Caprini score 0-2), 25.9% at medium risk (3-4), and 28.3% at high risk (5-6), highest risk (7-8), and superhigh risk (> 8). Patients with Caprini score > 5 were likely to be older, female, and with longer length of hospital stay. Moreover, 8695 patients had received ultrasonography to detect DVT. The prevalence of DVT was determined to be 19.0% [95% confidence interval (CI) 18.2-19.9%], which significantly increased with Caprini score. The area under curve of the Caprini RAM for DVT was 0.77 (95% CI 0.76-0.78) with a threshold of 4.5. Furthermore, 6108 patients who had received ultrasonography completed the follow-up. DVT patients had a hazard ratio of 1.75 (95% CI 1.11-2.76; P = 0.005) in the mortality, compared to non-DVT ones. Caprini scores were significantly associated with increase in the mortality [odds ratio (OR) 1.14; 95% CI 1.07-1.21; P < 0.001]; DVT remained an independent effect (OR 1.5; 95% CI 1.02-2.26; P = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS The Caprini RAM may be valid in Chinese orthopaedic trauma patients. Prevalence of DVT and higher Caprini score were significantly associated with increased all-cause mortality among orthopaedic trauma patients after discharge. Further study is warranted to explore the causes of higher mortality in patients with DVT.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to characterize the preoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of lower extremity by locations and evaluate the diagnostic ability of plasma D-dimer level in elderly patients with hip fracture. METHOD This retrospective study reviewed the elderly patients presenting with a hip fracture definitely undergoing surgical treatment and identified those who had preoperative DVT. Data on demographics, lifestyle habits, comorbidities and laboratory indexes were extracted and collected. Four groups were divided by presence and locations of thrombi: non-DVT (controls), isolated calf muscle vein thrombosis (CMVT), deep calf vein thrombosis (DCVT) and proximal DVT group. The comparisons were conducted between either DVT group or the non-DVT group. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC) were used for determining the diagnostic ability of D-dimer for each group. RESULTS Among 951 eligible patients included, 298 (31.3%) were found have preoperative DVT. Compared to non-DVT group, patients with CMVT had significantly lower albumin and hemoglobin concentration, more likely an intertrochanteric fracture and a higher prevalence of hypertension (P = 0.001, 0.006, 0.002 and 0.024, respectively); DCVT group was not observed to be significantly different in terms of any variables (all P > 0.05); and proximal DVT group had older age and more patients ≥ 80 years, lower albumin and hemoglobin concentration, higher prevalence of hypertension, more likely an intertrochanteric fracture, extended time from injury to imaging examination and higher age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (ACCI) (all P < 0.05). D-dimer demonstrated nonsignificant diagnostic ability for CMVT and DCVT, and a significant but poor ability for proximal DVT (AUC, 0.621; 95% CI 0.542-0.710; P = 0.011). CONCLUSION Varying characteristics were found among preoperative DVT stratified by locations after elderly hip fractures, and D-dimer level demonstrated no or poor diagnostic ability for DVTs by locations. Abstract
Background Guidelines exist for the surgical treatment of hip fractures, but the association between the surgical timing and the incidence of postoperative complications and other important outcomes in elderly patients with hip fracture remains controversial. Objective This study aims to explore the association between the surgical timing and the prognoses in elderly patients with hip fracture. Methods A total of 701 elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years) with hip fractures who were treated in our hospital from June 2020 to June 2021 were selected. Patients who underwent surgery within 2 d of admission were assigned to the early surgery group, and those who underwent surgery after 2 d of admission were assigned to the delayed surgery group. The prognosis indices of the patients in the two groups were recorded and compared. Results The length of postoperative hospitalisation in the early surgery group was significantly lower than that in the delayed surgery group (P < 0.001). The European quality of life questionnaire (EQ-5D) utility in the delayed surgery group was significantly lower than that in the early surgery group at 30 days and 6 months after operation (P<0.05). Compared with the delayed surgery group, the incidence of pulmonary infection, urinary tract infection (UTI) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the early surgery group were significantly lower. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of mortality and excellent rates of the HHS at six months after the operation. In addition, the early surgery group had a lower readmission rate than the delayed surgery group [34 (9.5%) vs 56 (16.3%), P = 0.008]. Conclusion Earlier surgery can reduce the incidence of pulmonary infections, UTI, DVT and readmission rate among elderly patients with hip fractures, shorten postoperative hospitalisation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a paucity of data regarding the prevalence of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with long bone (including femur, tibia and fibula) fractures of the lower limbs. We performed a meta-analysis to address the issue. METHODS Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, the Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, the VIP database, CNKI, and the Wanfang database, were systematic searched for original articles that reported the prevalence of preoperative DVT in long bone fractures of the lower limbs from January 2016 to September 2021. The prevalence of preoperative DVT was pooled using random-effects models, and subgroups were established according to study type, detection method, sample size and fracture site. RESULTS Twenty-three articles reporting on 18,119 patients were eligible. The overall pooled preoperative DVT prevalence was 24.1% (95% CI 19.3-28.8%). In different subgroups, the preoperative DVT prevalences were 18.2-27.3%, 15.2-28.6%, 23.1-24.9%, 18.2-26.0% and 23.2-23.4% for different study designs, sample sizes, age groups, detection methods and fracture sites, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Despite the heterogeneity among studies, this systematic review suggests that the prevalence of preoperative DVT, which may seriously affect the prognosis of patients, is high. Therefore, greater efforts should be devoted to the improvement of screening and prevention strategies for preoperative DVT in lower-extremity long bone fractures. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III. Abstract
Objective Postoperative nosocomial pneumonia is a terrible complication, especially for elderly patients. This study attempts to investigate the incidence and risk factors for postoperative nosocomial pneumonia and its influence on hospitalization stay in elderly patients with hip fractures. Methods This study retrospectively retrieved hospitalization records of patients who presented a hip fracture and underwent surgeries in our institution between January 2014 and December 2021. Postoperative new-onset pneumonia was determined in accordance with discharge diagnosis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the associated risk factors with pneumonia, and its influence on total hospitalization stay or postoperative hospitalization stay was investigated by multivariate linear regression analyses. Results Totally, 808 patients were included, among whom 54 developed a pneumonia representing the incidence rate of 6.7% (95% CI, 5.0%-8.4%). Six factors were identified as independently associated with pneumonia, including advanced age (OR, 1.50 for each 10-year increment), history of chronic respiratory disease (OR, 4.61), preoperative DVT (OR, 3.51), preoperative delay to operation (OR, 1.07 for each day), surgical duration ≥120 min (OR, 4.03) and arthroplasty procedure (OR, 4,39). When adjusted for above confounders, pneumonia was significantly positively associated with total hospitalization stay (standardized coefficient, 0.110; p < 0.001) and postoperative hospitalization stay (standardized coefficient, 0.139; p < 0.001). Conclusions This study identified multiple factors associated with postoperative pneumonia and its influence on prolonging hospitalization stay, which would facilitate preventive targeted intervention into implementation for individuals with different risk profiles.

Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common cause of death worldwide. The incidence of VTE varies according to different countries, ranging from 1-2 per 1000 person-years in Western Countries, while it is lower in Eastern Countries (<1 per 1000 person-years). Many risk factors have been identified in patients developing VTE, but the relative contribution of each risk factor to thrombotic risk, as well as pathogenetic mechanisms, have not been fully described. Herewith, we provide a comprehensive review of the most common risk factors for VTE, including male sex, diabetes, obesity, smoking, Factor V Leiden, Prothrombin G20210A Gene Mutation, Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, oral contraceptives and hormonal replacement, long-haul flight, residual venous thrombosis, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, trauma and fractures, pregnancy, immobilization, antiphospholipid syndrome, surgery and cancer. Regarding the latter, the incidence of VTE seems highest in pancreatic, liver and non-small cells lung cancer (>70 per 1000 person-years) and lowest in breast, melanoma and prostate cancer (<20 per 1000 person-years). In this comprehensive review, we summarized the prevalence of different risk factors for VTE and the potential molecular mechanisms/pathogenetic mediators leading to VTE.

Abstract
Hematocrit, a commonly used hematological indicator, is a simple and easily applicable test. As a marker of anisocytosis and anemia, it indicates the percentage of blood cells per unit volume of whole blood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the level of the hematocrit at admission and preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in hip fractures of older people. We collected the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with geriatric hip fractures between 1 January 2015, and 30 September 2019, at the largest trauma center in northwestern China. Doppler ultrasonography was used to diagnose DVT. The correlation between hematocrit levels at admission and preoperative DVT was assessed using linear and nonlinear multivariate logistic regression, according to the adjusted model. All analyzes were performed using EmpowerStats and R software. In total, 1840 patients were included in this study, of which 587 patients (32%) had preoperative DVT. The mean hematocrit level was 34.44 ± 5.64 vol%. Linear multivariate logistic regression models showed that admission hematocrit levels were associated with preoperative DVT (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95−0.99; p = 0.0019) after adjustment for confounding factors. However, the linear association was unstable, and nonlinearity was identified. An admission hematocrit level of 33.5 vol% was an inflection point for the prediction. Admission hematocrit levels <33.5 vol% were not associated with preoperative DVT (OR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.97−1.04, p = 0.8230), whereas admission hematocrit levels >33.5 vol% were associated with preoperative DVT (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 25 0.91−0.97, p = 0.0006). Hematocrit levels at admission were nonlinearly associated with preoperative DVT, and hematocrit at admission was a risk factor for preoperative DVT. However, the severity of a low hematocrit was not associated with preoperative DVT when the hematocrit was <33.5 vol%.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the risk factors of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in adults with acute compartment syndrome (ACS) following lower extremity fractures. We collected data on adults with ACS following lower extremity fractures in our hospital from November 2013 to January 2021. Patients were divided into the DVT group and the non-DVT group according to whether they had DVT or not. The demographics, comorbidities, and admission laboratory examinations were computed by univariate analysis, logistic regression analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. In our study, the rate of DVT (26 of 110) was 23.6%. Univariate analysis showed that numerous factors were associated with the formation of DVT. Logistic regression analysis showed that patients with multiple fractures (P = .015, OR = 5.688), patients with a history of hypertension (P = .011, OR = 16.673), and patients with a higher BMI (P = .008, OR = 1.950) and FDP (P = .013, OR = 1.031) were relevant predictors of DVT. ROC curve analysis indicated 24.73 kg/m2 and 28.33 μg/mL were the cutoff values of BMI and FDP to predict the DVT, respectively. Furthermore, the combination of BMI and FDP had the highest diagnostic accuracy. Our findings identified multiple fractures, BMI, and FDP as independent risk factors for DVT in patients with ACS following lower extremity fractures and determined the cutoff values of BMI and FDP, helping us individualize the assessment of the risk of DVT to manage early targeted interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The predictors of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with hip fractures remain unclear. Therefore, this study describes the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant peer-reviewed literature on this topic. METHODS We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and MEDLINE for articles published in English on the predictors of preoperative DVT in hip fractures. We calculated pooled odds ratios (OR) or mean differences (MD) for the DVT groups as compared with the non-DVT groups for each variable, including gender, age, body mass index, injury side, current smoking status, time from injury to admission, time from injury to surgery, fracture type, hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, diabetes, stroke, kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, malignancy, rheumatoid arthritis, D-dimer, fibrinogen, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, thrombin time, hemoglobin, albumin, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. RESULTS We included 9 studies involving 3,123 Asian patients with hip fractures (DVT, n = 570; non-DVT, n = 2,553). Being female (OR = 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.56; p = 0.02), being of advanced age (MD = 1.63; 95% CI 0.80-2.47; p = 0.0001), having a longer time from injury to admission (MD = 0.80; 95% CI 0.48-1.12; p < 0.00001), having a longer time from injury to surgery (MD = 2.20; 95% CI 1.53-2.88; p < 0.00001), and the presence of kidney disease (OR = 1.76; 95% CI 1.04-2.96; p = 0.03) were correlated with a high risk of DVT. However, we found no significant differences between the two groups in the other predictors. CONCLUSIONS Evidence indicates that being female, being of advanced age, having a longer time from injury to admission, having a longer time from injury to surgery, and having kidney disease are significantly correlated with a high risk of preoperative DVT in Asian patients with hip fracture. Further investigations with patients of other ethnicities are required.

Abstract
Introduction Despite high rates of transfusion reported among hip fracture patients in the perioperative period, the relationship between perioperative transfusions and VTE has not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, we used a national database to evaluate how perioperative transfusions among patients undergoing surgical management of hip fractures impacted 1) deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and 2) pulmonary embolism (PE) risk. Methods The Targeted Hip Fracture Database of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) was queried for patients undergoing surgical management of hip fractures from 2016 to 2019. A multivariate logistic regression was conducted using various patient-specific variables to identify risk factors for DVT and PE. A nearest-neighbor propensity score matched (PSM) comparison between patients receiving and not receiving perioperative blood transfusions (1:1) was additionally conducted. Results Prior to our PSM, preoperative transfusions were not associated with DVT incidence (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 0.80-2.50; p = 0.2). However, intra-operative/post-operative transfusions (OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.02-1.56; p = 0.00.30) as well as the receipt of both transfusion types (OR: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.10-2.81; p = 0.012) were associated with an increased risk of DVT. The latter of these findings remained significant following PSM (OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.04-2.73; p = 0.025). No relationship was demonstrated between PE risk and perioperative transfusion receipt. Conclusion Our findings emphasize the importance of perioperative blood management strategies among patients undergoing surgical repair of hip fracture. Specifically, orthopaedic surgeons should aim to optimize hip fracture patients prior to surgical intervention as well as intra-operatively to reduce transfusion incidence.

Abstract
Calf deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common in patients with hip fractures. However, studies on whether calf DVT has an impact on the prognosis are limited. This retrospective cohort study explored the association between calf DVT and 30-day and 90-day all-cause mortality in older patients with hip fractures. A total of 564 consecutive patients who underwent ultrasound examination were identified from our hip fracture database and categorized into patients with calf DVT (axial DVT, muscular DVT) and no DVT. Of these, 86 patients (15.2%) had ultrasound-confirmed calf DVT, including 66 patients with muscular DVT, and 20 patients with axial DVT. The 30-day and 90-day all-cause mortality were 2.5% and 6.0%, respectively. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that calf DVT was significantly associated with an increased risk of 30-day mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 3.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05 to 9.84, p = 0.04), but this risk relationship did not persist at 90-day follow-up (HR 1.59, 95% CI 0.69 to 3.71, p = 0.28). When calf DVT was further categorized, muscular DVT remained an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality (HR 3.95, 95% CI 1.18 to 13.15, p = 0.03), whereas this relationship was not found in axial DVT (HR 1.79, 95% CI 0.21 to 15.02, p = 0.59). In conclusion, calf DVT, especially muscular calf DVT but not axial DVT, is independently associated with an increased risk of 30-day mortality in older patients with hip fracture, but this risk relationship did not persist at 90-day follow-up.

Abstract
Background Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a devastating complication in geriatric patients before hip fracture surgery, and the predictive value of red cell distribution width (RDW) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) for DVTs after hip fracture remains to be established. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of RDW, HDL-C, and RDW-to-HDL-C ratio (RHR) in preoperative DVTs screening. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the data of geriatric patients (≥65 years old) admitted for hip fracture surgery between 2015 and 2020. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and related parameters were used to evaluate the predictive value of the biomarkers. Patients were divided into two groups according to the cutoff value of RHR, and propensity score matching (PSM) and subgroup analyses were performed to assess the true correlations between RHR and DVT. Results Among 2566 eligible patients included, we identified RDW with the area under ROC curve (AUC) of 0.532, cut-off value of 15.89, specificity of 88.2%, sensitivity of 18.2%, HDL-C with AUC of 0.574, cut-off value of 1.20, specificity of 55.6%, sensitivity of 59.3%, and RHR with AUC of 0.578, cut-off value of 13.45, specificity of 71.3%, sensitivity of 43.4%. RHR (>13.45) was independently associated with 1.54-fold risk (95% CI: 1.11–2.14, P=0.011) of DVTs among the post-PSM cohort. And compared with the counterparts, the relative risk of RHR associated with DVT was higher in the subgroups of aged 65–79 years (1.61 vs 1.45), non-hypoproteinemia (2.70 vs 1.29), non-diabetic (1.58 vs 1.41), non-hypertension (2.40 vs 1.06), ASA score I-II (2.38 vs 1.04), and femoral neck fracture (1.70 vs 1.50). Conclusion RDW, HDL-C and RHR were valuable biomarkers in predicting preoperative DVTs in geriatric patients with hip fracture, and RHR would be more efficient in the subgroups of younger age, better medical condition or femoral neck fracture.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of preoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) following intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly and identify the associated factors, based on which a risk prediction model was developed. Method This was a retrospective single-center study of elderly patients presenting with intertrochanteric fractures between our institution between January 2017 and December 2020. Patients' duplex ultrasound (DUS) or venography results were retrieved to evaluate whether they had a preoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of bilateral extremities, whereby patients were dichotomized. Various variables of interest on demographics, comorbidities, injury and biomarkers were extracted and their relationship between DVT were investigated. Statistically significant variables tested in multivariate logistics regression analyses were used to develop a risk prediction model. Results There were 855 patients eligible to be included in this study, and 105 were found to have preoperative DVT, with a prevalence rate of 12.3%. Ten factors were tested as significantly different and 2 marginally significant between DVT and non-DVT groups in the univariate analyses, but only 6 demonstrated the independent effect on DVT occurrence, including history of a VTE event (OR, 4.43; 95%CI, 2.04 to 9.62), time from injury to DVT screening (OR, 1.19; 95%CI, 1.13 to 1.25), BMI (OR, 1.11; 95%CI, 1.04–1.18), peripheral vascular disease (OR, 2.66; 95%CI, 1.10 to 6.40), reduced albumin (2.35; 95%CI, 1.48 to 3.71) and D-Dimer > 1.0 mg/L(OR, 1.90; 95%CI, 1.13 to 3.20). The DVT risk model showed an AUC of 0.780 (95%CI, 0.731 to 0.829), with a sensitivity of 0.667 and a specificity of 0.777. Conclusion Despite without a so high prevalence rate of DVT in a general population with intertrochanteric fracture, particular attention should be paid to those involved in the associated risk factors above. The risk prediction model exhibited the improved specificity, but its validity required further studies to verify.

Abstract
Study design A meta-analysis. Background Hip fracture (HF), as common geriatric fracture, is related to increased disability and mortality. Preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is one of the most common complications in patients with hip fractures, affecting 8–34.9% of hip fracture patients. The study aimed to assess the risk factors of preoperative DVT after hip fractures by meta-analysis. Methods An extensive search of the literature was performed in the English databases of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library; and the Chinese databases of CNKI and WAN FANG. We collected possible predictors of preoperative DVT from included studies, and data analysis was conducted with RevMan 5.3 and STATA 12.0. Results A total of 26 English articles were included, and the rate of DVT was 16.6% (1627 of 9823 patients) in our study. Our findings showed that advanced age [p = 0.0003, OR = 0.13 95% CI (0.06, 0.21)], female patients [p = 0.0009, OR = 0.82 95% CI (0.72, 0.92)], high-energy injury [p = 0.009, OR = 0.58 95% CI (0.38, 0.87)], prolonged time from injury to admission [p < 0.00001, OR = 0.54 95% CI (0.44, 0.65)], prolonged time from injury to surgery [p < 0.00001, OR = 2.06, 95% CI (1.40, 2.72)], hemoglobin [p < 0.00001, OR = − 0.32 95% CI (− 0.43, − 0.21)], coronary heart disease [p = 0.006, OR = 1.25 95% CI (1.07, 1.47)], dementia [p = 0.02, OR = 1.72 95% CI (1.1, 2.67)], liver and kidney diseases [p = 0.02, OR = 1.91 95% CI (1.12, 3.25)], pulmonary disease [p = 0.02, OR = 1.55 95% CI (1.07, 2.23)], smoking [p = 0.007, OR = 1.45 95% CI (1.11, 1.89)], fibrinogen [p = 0.0005, OR = 0.20 95% CI (0.09, 0.32)], anti-platelet drug [p = 0.01, OR = 0.51 95% CI (0.30, 0.85)], C-reactive protein [p = 0.02, OR = 5.95 95% CI (1.04, 10.85)], < 35 g/l albumin [p = 0.006, OR = 1.42 95% CI (1.1, 1.82)], and thrombosis history [p < 0.00001, OR = 5.28 95% CI (2.85, 9.78)] were risk factors for preoperative DVT. Conclusions Many factors, including advanced age, female patients, high-energy injury, prolonged time from injury to admission, prolonged time from injury to surgery, patients with a history of coronary heart disease, dementia, liver and kidney diseases, pulmonary disease, smoking, and thrombosis, fibrinogen, C-reactive protein, and < 35 g/l albumin, were found to be associated with preoperative DVT. Our findings suggested that the patient with above characteristics might have preoperative DVT. Level of evidence: Level III.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the incidence and risk factors of postoperative pneumonia (POP) in geriatric patients with a hip fracture after surgery, to design a predictive nomogram, and to validate the accuracy of the nomogram. Design Retrospective study. Setting A tertiary hospital affiliated to a medical university. Patients/Participants We retrospectively studied 1285 surgical-treated geriatric patients with a hip fracture from April 2010 to April 2018. Intervention Surgical treatment was performed on the patients of this study. The procedure methods were classified as: total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, percutaneous fixation, intramedullary nail fixation, and plate/screw fixation. Main Outcome Measurement The primary interest of end point of this study is the development of POP during the postoperative period. The postoperative period in this study was defined as the time from 24 hours after surgery to discharge. The diagnostic criteria for pneumonia were set according to the guidelines built by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Thoracic Society (Guidelines for the Management of Adults with Hospital-Acquired, Ventilator-Associated, and Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia, 2005). Potential variables for developing POP were identified using logistic regression analyses initially and were further selected via the method of LASSO. Then the independent risk factors were identified by multivariable regression analyses. A predictive nomogram was built based on the multiple regression model, and the calibration abilities of the nomogram was measured by Harrel C-index, calibration plot and Hosmer–Lemeshow test, respectively. Decision curve analysis was carried out to assess the net benefit due to threshold probability and an on-line questionnaire survey was conducted among the clinicians to assess the applicability of the nomogram coherently. Results Of the 1285 patients, 70 (5.4%) developed POP. COPD, number of comorbidities, ASA classification >2, preoperative dependent functional status and cognitive impairment were identified as independent risk factors of POP. The nomogram built based on the results showed good accordance between the predicted probabilities and the observed frequency. The decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the nomogram when the threshold probabilities were between 5% and 65% due to the net benefit, while the results of on-line questionnaire among 200 clinicians showed that 91.5% of the participants had a mental threshold of intervention between 5-50%. Conclusion (1). COPD, number of comorbidities, ASA classification >2, preoperative dependent functional status and cognitive impairment are independent risk factors for POP. (2). The nomogram built in this study has a good accordance between the predictive risk and the observational incidence. The results of decision curve and questionnaire among clinicians show well applicability of the nomogram.

Abstract
ABSTRACT There is still a lack of data on isolated calf deep vein thrombosis (ICDVT) following hip fractures surgery. The study aimed to determine the incidence of preoperative ICDVT and the associated risk factors in patients with hip fractures requiring surgery.The 289 patients who required hip surgery were included, duplex ultrasonography was routinely used to make a definite diagnosis of preoperative ICDVT located in unilateral or bilateral calf. Data on demographics and laboratory-associated blood biomarkers results were included. Univariate analyses were used to analyse the data of demographics, comorbidities, personal history operation related indexes and laboratory biomarkers, then the multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to identify the independent risk factors associated with ICDVT.Sixty-eight (23.5%) patients were diagnosed with preoperative ICDVTs. The univariate analyses showed significant differences regarding ICDVT were age, current smoking, alcohol consumption, time from injury to operation, albumin, white blood cells, lymphocyte, red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and activated partial thromboplastin time level among the 44 factors. The multivariable model confirmed 3 risk factors were significantly independent in association with preoperative ICDVTs, including current smoking, time delay from injury to operation and activated partial thromboplastin time ( < 28seconds).The incidence of preoperative ICDVT in hip fracture was 23.5%, and patients with associated risk factors are prone to form ICDVTs, identification of these factors may help to reduce the incidence of ICDVT with hip fractures by taking early prevention measures.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the incidence, location, and related factors of preoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in patients with isolated patellar fractures. Methods Patients with an isolated patellar fracture, admitted between January 2013 and December 2019 at our institution, were retrospectively analyzed. Upon admission, patients underwent routine Doppler ultrasound scanning (DUS) of the bilateral lower extremities to detect DVT; those with DVT were assigned to the case group and those without DVT to the control group. Patients in both groups did not perform preoperative off-bed weight-bearing exercises. Data on demographics, comorbidities, and laboratory test results upon admission were extracted. Variables were evaluated between the two groups using univariate analyses, and independent risk factors associated with DVT were identified by logistic regression analysis. Results During the study period, 827 patients were included, of whom 5.8% (48/827) were found to have preoperative DVT. In DVT patients, 85.4%(41/48) were injured, 8.3%(4/48) were not injured, and 6.3%(3/48) were lower limbs. Multivariate analysis showed that male (male vs. female, odds ratio, OR = 2.25), delayed from injury to DUS (in each day, OR = 1.29), and elevated plasma D-dimer level (> 0.5 µg/mL, OR = 2.47) were independent risk factors associated with DVT. Conclusions Despite the low prevalence of DVT after an isolated patellar fracture, this study underscores the importance of identifying those with a high risk of DVT, especially those with multiple identifiable factors, and encourage the early targeted use of anti-thromboembolic agents to reduce DVT occurrence.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the association between mean platelet volume (MPV) and preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in older patients with hip fracture. A total of 352 consecutive older patients with hip fracture were included from January 2014 to December 2020. MPV values were measured on admission, and color Doppler ultrasonography was performed for DVT screening before the planned surgery. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to establish the optimal cut-off value for the prediction of DVT. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to examine the association between factors and DVT. The overall prevalence of preoperative DVT was 15.1%, and patients with DVT had a lower value of MPV than non-DVT patients (11.6 ± 1.2 fL vs 12.3 ± 1.4 fL, P < .01). The cut-off point according to the ROC curve for MPV was 13.3 fL, and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that MPV level < 13.3 fL was significantly associated with an increased risk of DVT (OR = 4.857, 95% CI: 1.091-21.617, P = .038), and with every 1.0 fL decrease in MPV, the risk increased by 27.7% (OR = 1.277, 95% CI: 1.001-1.629, P = .047). Our findings indicate that a low MPV level is associated with DVT in older patients with hip fracture. As MPV is a simple indicator that can be calculated from the blood routine test, it may be a potential biomarker of DVT with the combination of other tests, further studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
Objective Based on the XGBoost algorithm, the prediction model of the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was established, and the prediction performance was compared. Methods A total of 100 patients with TKA from January 2019 to December 2020 were retrospectively selected as the study subjects and randomly divided into a training set (n = 60) and a test set (n = 40). The training set data was used to construct the XGBoost algorithm prediction model and to screen the predictive factors of postoperative DVT in TKA patients. The prediction effect of the model was evaluated by using the test set data. An independent sample T-test was used for comparison between groups, and the χ2 test was used for comparison between counting data groups. Results The top five items were combined with multiple injuries (35 points), time from injury to operation (28 points), age (24 points), combined with coronary heart disease (21 points), and D-dimer 1 day after operation (16 points). In the training set, the area under the curve of the XGBoost algorithm model was 0.832 (95% CI: 0.748-0.916). Conclusion The model based on the XGBoost algorithm can predict the incidence of DVT in patients after TKA with good performance.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to investigate the incidence, occurrence timing and locations of preoperative DVT and identify the associated factors in this group.
Methods A retrospective analysis of collected data in young and middle-aged (18–59 years) patients who presented with hip fracture between October 2015 and December 2018 was conducted. Before operation, patients were routinely examined for DVT by Duplex ultrasonography (DUS). Electronic medical records were retrieved to collect the data, involving demographics, comorbidities, injury and laboratory biomarkers after admission. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors that were independently associated with DVT. Results Eight hundred and fifty-seven patients were included, and 51 (6.0%) were diagnosed with preoperative DVT, with 2.5% for proximal DVT. The average age of patients with DVT is 48.7 ± 9.4 year, while that of patients without DVT is 45.0 ± 10.9 year. The mean time from injury to diagnosis of DVT was 6.8 ± 5.5 days, 43.1% cases occurring at day 2–4 after injury. Among 51 patients with DVT, 97 thrombi were found. Most patients had thrombi at injured extremity (72.5%), 19.6% at uninjured and 7.8% at bilateral extremities. There are significantly difference between patients with DVT and patients without DVT in term of prevalence of total protein (41.2% vs 24.4%, P = 0.008), albumin (54.9% vs 25.6%, P = 0.001), low lactate dehydrogenase (51.0% vs 30.3%, P = 0.002), lower serum sodium concentration (60.8% vs 29.9%, P = 0.001), lower RBC count (68.6% vs 37.0%, P = 0.001), lower HGB (51.0% vs 35.1%, P = 0.022), higher HCT (86.3% vs 35.1%, P = 0.022) and higher platelet count (37.3% vs 11.3%, P = 0.001). The multivariate analyses showed increasing age in year (OR 1.04, 95% CI; P = 0.020), delay to DUS (OR, 1.26; P = 0.001), abnormal LDH (OR, 1.45; P = 0.026), lower serum sodium concentration (OR, 2.56; P = 0.007), and higher HCT level (OR, 4.11; P = 0.003) were independently associated with DVT. Conclusion These findings could be beneficial in informed preventive of DVT and optimized management of hip fracture in specific group of young and mid-aged patients.

Abstract
Purpose To analyze the relationship between monocyte count and preoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in older patients with hip fracture. Methods Consecutive older patients with hip fracture undergoing surgery were included from January 2014 to December 2021. Monocyte count was measured on admission, and Doppler ultrasonography was performed for DVT screening prior to surgery. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between monocyte count and DVT. Results A total of 674 patients were finally included, and 128 patients (19.0%) were diagnosed with preoperative DVT. Patients with DVT exhibited a higher monocyte count than patients without DVT [0.55 (0.43-0.72) × 109/L versus 0.49 (0.38-0.63) × 109/L, P = 0.007]. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a high monocyte count (> 0.6 × 109/L) was independently associated with a higher risk of DVT (OR = 1.705, 95% CI: 1.121-2.593, P = 0.013), and for every 0.1 × 109/L increase in monocyte count, the risk of DVT increased by 8.5% (OR = 1.085, 95% CI: 1.003-1.174, P = 0.041). Other risk factors associated with DVT included intertrochanteric fracture (OR = 1.596, 95% CI: 1.022-2.492, P = 0.040), and elevated fibrinogen level (OR = 1.236, 95% CI: 1.029-1.484, P = 0.023). Conclusion A high monocyte count is associated with an increased risk of DVT in older patients with hip fracture. Future studies should evaluate the potential role of monocyte in the prevention and treatment of thrombosis.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the correlation between preoperative DVT and the time from
injury to surgery (TFITS), and provide a clinical reference for the
prevention of preoperative DVT. Patients and methods We collected the clinical data of patients with lower extremities fractures
between September 1, 2014, and May 31, 2019. Doppler ultrasonography was
used to diagnose DVT. Patients were divided into the 0-2d group, 3-4d group,
5-7d group, and >7d group according to TFITS. The correlation between
TFITS and preoperative DVT was assessed using logistic regression according
to the adjusted model. Result A total of 2831 patients were included in the study. The mean(+/-SD) TFITS
was 6.11 ± 3.76 (0 to 21 d). A total of 821 (29.0%) cases had preoperative
DVT, with the incidence of DVT being 8.0% in the 0-2d group, 23.8% in the
3-4d group, 32.0% in the 5-7d group, and 36.2% in the >7d group, with
statistically significant differences(P<0.05) among all the groups. The
incidence of preoperative DVT increased with prolonged preoperative time. In
the fully adjusted model, TFITS was positively correlated with the incidence
of preoperative DVT (OR: 1.093; 95% CI: 1.068-1.118; P = 0.000), and the
strength of the association increased with increasing time. Conclusion TFITS was an independent risk factor on the incidence of preoperative DVT.
After excluding the effect of other factors, each 1d increases in TFITS was
correlated with a 9.3% increase in the risk of preoperative DVT. The TFITS
should be decreased to reduce the risk of preoperative DVT.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the pre-operative incidence of and risk factors for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in geriatric intertrochanteric fractures to help facilitate the peri-operative management of them. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data of 1515 geriatric intertrochanteric fracture patients were extracted from a prospective intertrochanteric fractures database according to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. The demographics, fracture characteristics, and pre-operative laboratory indicators of patients were evaluated statistically. RESULTS The incidence of pre-operative DVT was 10.2% (155 in 1360 patients) in the present study. The rates of proximal DVT, distal DVT, and mixed DVT were 18.1% (28 patients), 56.8% (88 patients), and 25.2% (39 patients), respectively. The percentages of DVT developing in the affected limb, uninjured limb, and bilateral limbs were 74.2% (115 in 55 patients), 16.8% (26 in 155 patients), and 9% (14 in 155 patients), respectively. After the multivariable analysis, the time from injury to surgery (TIS) > 4 days [odds ratio (OR) = 1.870, p = 0.001], the number of comorbidities > 2 (OR = 2.124, p = 0.014), and albumin (ALB) < 35 g/L (OR = 1.516, p = 0.043), etc. were significantly associated with the development of preoperative DVT in geriatric intertrochanteric fracture patients. CONCLUSIONS Although routine anticoagulant therapy was used to prevent the formation of DVT, the incidence of which was still high. Therefore, pre-operative ultrasound of both lower extremities was advised for pre-operatively, especially for patients with delayed surgery, hypoproteinemia, three or more comorbidities, and a D-dimer level > 1.59 mg/L.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A retrospective analysis (2015-2019) of data collected from patients who underwent posterior lumbar spinal surgery. OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify the incidence, perioperative hematological characteristics, potential prognostic indicators, and risk factors of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the lower limbs after posterior lumbar spinal surgery. Eliminating risk factors or taking measures against patients at risk may reduce the incidence of DVT. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Deep venous thromboses have been extensively studied in other reconstructive surgeries. Present literatures provide limited evidence for determining the prognostic and risk factors for this complication after spinal surgery. METHODS Patients who underwent posterior lumbar spinal surgery with internal fixation in the Spine Surgery Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) were evaluated. The patient demographics, the number of operative segments, the hematological and biochemical parameters on baseline and postoperative day 1, and the presence of DVTs were obtained from all patients. The diagnosis of DVT was established by venous ultrasound when symptomatic. A multivariate logistic regression test was subsequently performed to determine the prognostic indicators and risk factors for DVT. RESULTS A total of 2053 patients who received lumbar spine procedures were qualified and included. Patients were followed up for 12 weeks. Early symptomatic DVT occurred in 58 individuals (2.39%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.4-0.7%). Advanced age, higher preoperative serum D-dimer level, and lower serum potassium level were recognized as independent risk factors for symptomatic DVT. CONCLUSION Multiple independent risk factors were identified for early symptomatic DVT after posterior lumbar spine surgery. Postoperative prophylactic anti-coagulation treatment might be warranted for patients with high D-dimer or low potassium levels before the procedure.Level of Evidence: 4.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the incidence of and risk factors for postoperative new-onset deep venous thrombosis (PNO-DVT) following intertrochanteric fracture surgery. Information on 1672 patients who underwent intertrochanteric fracture surgery at our hospital between January 2016 and December 2019 was extracted from a prospective hip fracture database. Demographic information, surgical data, and preoperative laboratory indices were analysed. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, univariate analyses and binary logistic regression analyses were performed. The incidences of postoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and PNO-DVT in inpatients after intertrochanteric fracture surgery were 11.5% (202 of 1751 patients) and 7.4% (123 of 1672 patients), respectively. PNO-DVT accounted for 60.9% of postoperative DVT. Additionally, there were 20 cases of central thrombosis (16.3%), 82 cases of peripheral thrombosis (66.7%), and 21 cases of mixed thrombosis (17.1%). In addition, 82.1% of PNO-DVTs were diagnosed within 8 days after surgery. The multivariate analysis revealed that age > 70 years, duration of surgery (> 197 min), type of anaesthesia (general), and comorbidities (≥ 3) were independent risk factors for the development of PNO-DVT after intertrochanteric fracture surgery. This study demonstrated a high incidence of PNO-DVT in inpatients after intertrochanteric fracture surgery. Therefore, postoperative examination for DVT should be routinely conducted for patients.

Abstract
Background The preoperative prevalence of deep venous thromboembolism (DVT) of patella fracture is not well established. The study aimed to investigate the preoperative prevalence, the associated risk factors, and the locations of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in patients with closed patella fracture. Methods Patients who sustained closed patella fracture between January 1, 2016, and April 1, 2019, were included. Blood analyses and ultrasonography of bilateral lower extremities were routinely performed. Data of demographics, comorbidities, mechanism of injury, fracture type, total hospital stay, time from injury to DVT, and laboratory indexes were prospectively collected and compared between groups with and with non-DVT. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the independent risk factors of DVT. Results Among the study cohort of 790 patients, 35 cases occurred in preoperative DVTs, indicating a prevalence of 4.4%, with 3.2% distal and 1.2% proximal DVT. Age ≥ 65 years old (OR, 3.0, 95% CI, 1.1–8.1), D-dimer > 0.5 mg/L (OR, 2.3, 95% CI, 1.1–4.8), and albumin < 35 g/L (OR, 2.5, 95% CI, 1.2–5.3) were identified to be risk factors of DVT in closed patella fracture. Among the DVTs, 30 cases (85.7%) occurred in the injured extremity, 3 cases (8.6%) in bilateral extremities, and 2 cases (5.7%) solely in the uninjured extremity. Conclusion The prevalence of preoperative DVT in closed patella fracture was 4.4%, with 3.2% for distal and 1.2% for proximal DVT. We recommend individualized risk stratification and early anticoagulation for patients with risk factors (age ≥ 65 years, D-dimer > 0.5 mg/L and albumin < 35g/L).

Abstract
Background To observe the outcome of isolated calf muscle vein thrombosis (ICMVT) undergoing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for closed intra-articular distal femur fractures (DFFs) and to analyze related factors. Methods The study was designed as a prospective clinical cohort study at our hospital. From August 2018 to August 2020,a total of 140 patients with flesh ICMVT after ORIF for closed intra-articular DFFs were collected during hospitalization. After the administration of antithrombotic agents immediately after diagnosis, the location and prognosis of postoperative ICMVT were examined by Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) with a three-month follow-up. There were 29 males and 111 females with the average age of 70.16 ± 8.75 years old. Sonography was used to evaluate the resolution of muscular vein thrombosis at the time point of the third month postoperatively and the results were compared between the two time points. Multivariable analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between the resolution of ICMVT three months postoperatively and risk factors including age, Body Mass Index (BMI), gender, thrombosis length (> 5 / ≤5 cm), thrombosis diameter(> 0.6/≤0.6 cm), and thrombosis-related biochemistry indices. Results The postoperative ICMVTs was diagnosed at 5.47 ± 2.46 days after ORIF for closed intra-articular DFFs. At the follow up of 3 months,120 cases was tending to disappear with 88 cases(62.9 %) completely dissolved and 32 cases(22.9 %) partly dissolved. There existed 14 cases (10.0 %) without change on the size and 6 cases (4.2 %) with proximal propagation. Multivariate analysis revealed that thrombus diameter over 0.6 cm (odds ratio [OR], 8.900; 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 3.623–21.865), thrombus length over 5.0 cm (OR, 3.904; 95 % CI, 1.121–13.603), FIB over 3.0 g/L (OR, 3.627; 95 % CI, 1.356–9.689), and D-dimer over 1.0 mg/L (OR, 2.602; 95 % CI, 1.075–6.296) were four independent risk factors of non-completely dissolved ICMVTs. Conclusions 85.8 % of ICMVT was tending to disappear at the third months after ORIF for closed intra-articular DFFs. Thrombus diameter, thrombus length, FIB, and D-dimer were four independent risk factors of non-completely dissolved ICMVTs. The Thrombus diameter has a significant effect on the natural course of ICMVTs, especially with diameter larger than 0.6 cm.

Abstract
Background Limited studies were available to investigate the prevalence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on admission in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures. The aim of present study was to evaluate risk factors and the prevalence of pre-admission DVT in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures. Methods This retrospective study included 788 elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture who were eligible for this study from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2019. Color doppler ultrasonography was performed for DVT detection at admission. All patients’ clinical data were collected. Univariate analysis and stepwise backward multivariate logistic regression were used to identify the risk factors contributing to the occurrence of DVT. Results The overall prevalence of pre-admission DVT in patients with intertrochanteric fractures was 20.81% (164 of 788 patients). The mean time from injury to admission was 2.1 days in the total population, 2.96 and 1.87 days in patients with and without DVT. Univariate analysis showed that significantly elevated risk of DVT were found in patients with longer time from injury to admission, high energy injury, lower Hb value, higher BMI, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), atrial fibrillation, dementia, varicose veins, higher age-adjusted CCI, higher ASA class and A3 type intertrochanteric fractures (P < 0.05). The adjusted multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that longer time from injury to admission, high energy trauma, COPD, lower Hb, diabetes and A3 type intertrochanteric fractures were independent risk factors of pre-admission DVT. Conclusions A high prevalence of pre-admission DVT was found in elderly Chinese patients with intertrochanteric fractures. Therefore, surgeons should be aware of the high prevalence of DVT for elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures in order to prevent intraoperative and postoperative PE and other lethal complications.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the epidemiologic characteristics of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in elderly patients with femoral neck fracture. Methods Retrospective analysis was performed on elderly patients with femoral neck fractures admitted to two institutions from January 2016 to October 2019. Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) was used to detect DVT. Patients’ hospitalization medical records were retrieved to collect the data, which were related to demographics, comorbidities, injury and laboratory results on admission. Patients with preoperative DVT were defined as the case group and those without DVT as control group, and compared using the univariate analyses. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent factors associated with DVT. Results Totally, 980 patients met the predefined criteria and were included. Sixty-seven patients were diagnosed to have preoperative DVT, with incidence of 6.8% for overall, 1.7% for proximal and 5.1% for distal DVT. The mean time from injury to diagnosis of DVT was 6.0 ± 4.7 days (median, 5.0). Most (76.1%) patients with DVT had thrombi solely in the injured extremity, in contrast with 14.9% (10/67) in the uninjured and 9.0% (6/67) in both injured and uninjured extremity. Multivariate analysis showed chronic renal insufficiency (OR, 3.37; 95%CI, 1.57 to 7.28), current smoking status (OR, 2.42; 95%CI, 1.23 to 5.63), time from injury to DUS (OR, 1.26; 95%CI, 1.07 to 1.61) and PLT > 220*109/L (OR, 1.94; 95%CI, 1.31 to 3.77) were independent factors for DVT. Conclusion Preoperative DVT is not very prevalent following elderly femoral neck fractures, but with a certain proportion in the uninjured extremity, necessitating the more attention. These identified risk factors aid in patient counseling, individualized risk assessment and risk stratification, and should be kept in mind.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with lower extremity fractures who received anticoagulation treatment in the perioperative stage. We collected the patients’ clinical data and diagnosed DVT using Doppler ultrasonography. Preoperative, postoperative, and 1-month postoperative examinations were performed. The patients were divided into thrombosis and non-thrombosis groups according to ultrasonographic findings. A total of 404 patients were included in the study. The preoperative, postoperative, and 1-month postoperative incidence rates were, respectively, 35%, 55%, and 40% for DVT and 12%, 22%, and 20% for DVT in the uninjured contralateral lower extremity. The incidence of perioperative DVT decreased over time from 223 (55%) to 161 (40%). Multivariate analysis revealed that the independent risk factors for preoperative that of DVT were age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.03; 95% CI: 1.01-1.04; P = .000); postoperative that of DVT were age (OR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.03-1.05; P = .000), blood loss (OR: 1.001; 95% CI: 1.000-1.002; P = .018), and American Society of Anesthesiologists classification (OR: 2.07; 95% CI: 1.16-3.72; P = .014); and 1-month postoperative that of DVT were age (OR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.03-1.07; P = .000), respectively. In conclusion, the incidence of perioperative DVT decreased over time in patients who received anticoagulation treatment. Age was an important risk factor for perioperative DVT.

Abstract
Application of the Caprini risk assessment model was explored in patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.This study was a prospective study. The risk factors for DVT were assessed with a survey at baseline and on the morning of surgery, first day after surgery and sixth day by using repeated blood vessels on color Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs, and the intraoperative and postoperative conditions were recorded.Among 148 surgical patients, 24.3% had asymptomatic DVT. According to the risk stratification, the incidence of DVT was related to the Caprini score (P < .001). The area under the curve of the Caprini model was 0.701 ± 0.047 (95% CI: 0.609-0.793, P<.001). The Youden index was 0.368, while the critical point was 10.5 in the Caprini model, corresponding to a sensitivity of 0.806 and a specificity of 0.563. Age, cardiovascular disease, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative fever, preoperative preparation, and hospital stay were higher in DVT patients than in patients without DVT. Moreover, the incidence of DVT in patients with a lithotomy position was higher than that in patients with a scissors position. In binary logistic regression analysis, the independent risk factors for DVT development were age, intraoperative blood loss, and preoperative preparation time.The Caprini model can be used for the prediction of venous thromboembolism in laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery patients. The thrombosis risk assessment model must be established in line with patients undergoing endoscopic malignant tumor surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE New-onset deep vein thrombosis (DVT) reportedly affects prognosis and surgical outcomes of elderly patients. However, its effect on distal femur fractures (DFFs) remains unclear. We aimed to address the epidemiological characteristics and the associated predictors for post-operative DVT in patients with closed DFFs over age 60 years old. PATIENTS AND METHODS We designed a prospective cohort trial at our hospital between October 2018 and June 2020 and recruited consecutive 140 patients over age 60 years diagnosed with closed DFFs. We examined location and prognosis of postoperative DVT and then conducted a three month follow-up. We used Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) to diagnose DVT in all patients and then classified the subjects into DVT and non-DVT groups. We further classified DVTs into proximal, distal, and mixed thromboses and then performed Whitney U test or t test, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, Chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression analysis to confirm the adjusted factors of post-operative DVT. RESULTS We found a 35% (n = 49) overall incidence of post-operative DVTs, which occurred 5.7 days following open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). Among patients with post-operative DVTs, 53.1% (n = 26) and 10.2% (n = 5) were distal and proximal thromboses, respectively. Additionally, peroneal veins were the most common DVT sites (71.4%, n = 35). Multivariate analysis revealed that venous thrombosis at admission (odds ratio [OR], 4.619; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.072-10.299; P = 0.000), operation duration over 195 minutes (OR, 3.289; 95% CI, 1.155-9.370; P = 0.026), intra-operative blood loss over 325 mL (OR, 2.538; 95% CI, 1.047-6.155; P = 0.039) were the three independent risk factors of post-operative DVT. Unified antithrombotic agents after diagnosis showed that 16.3% (n = 8) of DVTs were completely recanalized, 12.6 days after first diagnosis. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate a strong association between venous thrombosis at admission, the longer operation duration, and considerable intra-operative blood loss with high risk of post-operative DVTs in patients over age 60 years with closed DFFs. Preventive approaches for postoperative DVTs should seek to shorten operation duration and reduce intra-operative blood loss.

Abstract
Background In this study, we investigated the epidemiological characteristics and predictors of preoperative new-onset deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in adult patients with closed distal femur fractures (DFFs). Methods The study was designed as a prospective cohort trial at the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University. From October 2018 to June 2020, a total of 160 patients with closed DFFs were enrolled to assess the location and prognosis of preoperative DVT. The patients were followed up for 2 months. Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) was used to diagnose patients with DVT. The patients were divided into two groups (DVT group and non-DVT group). The DVT was then classified into proximal, distal, and mixed thromboses. The Mann-Whitney U test or t test, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses, univariate Chi-square analyses, and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the adjusted predictors of DVT. Results The overall incidence of preoperative DVTs was 52.5% (n = 84), which was diagnosed at a mean period of 3.1 days after injury. Among patients diagnosed with DVTs, 50.0% (n = 42) had distal thrombosis while 47.6% (n = 40) had mixed thrombosis. The calf muscle veins were the most common sites of DVTs (90.5%, n = 76). Of note, 45.2% (n = 38) of diagnosed DVTs were completely recanalized at a mean period of 12.0 days after the initial (first) diagnosis. Multivariate analysis revealed that age of ≥ 65 years of age (odds ratio [OR], 4.390; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.727–11.155; p = 0.002), C-reactive protein (CRP) levels exceeding 11 mg/L (OR 4.158; 95% CI 1.808–11.289; p = 0.001), platelet (PLT) levels over 217 × 109/L (OR, 2.55; 95% CI 1.07–6.07; p = 0.035), D-dimer levels over 1.0 mg/L (OR 3.496; 95% CI 1.483–8.237; p = 0.004), and an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score of III-V (OR 2.753; 95% CI 1.216–6.729; p = 0.026) were the independent risk factors of preoperative DVT. Conclusions High levels of CRP, PLT, D-dimer, ASA, and ≥ 65 years of age increase the risk of preoperative DVTs in adult patients with closed DFFs. Thus, the prediction of preoperative DVTs can significantly be improved by identifying older patients over the age of 65, and establishing the biochemical cut-off values of CRP, PLT, ASA, and D-dimer. Trial registration No. 2018-026-1, 24 October 2018, prospectively registered. This trial was registered prospectively on 24 October 2018 before the first participant was enrolled. This study protocol conformed to the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by the Institutional Review Board. The ethics committee approved the study on the factors of prognosis for patients with fractures. Data used in this study were obtained from the patients who underwent orthopedic surgery between October 2018 and June 2020.
