Abstract
Aging is accompanied by physical dysfunction and physiologic degeneration that occurs over an individual's lifetime. Human teeth, like many other organs, inevitably undergo chronological aging and age-related changes throughout the lifespan, resulting in a substantial need for preventive, restorative as well as periodontal dental care. This is particularly the case for seniors at 65 years of age and those older but economically disadvantaged. Dental aging not only interferes with normal chewing and digestion, but also affects daily appearance and interpersonal communications. Further dental aging can incur the case of multiple disorders such as oral cancer, encephalitis, and other systemic diseases. In the next decades or even hundreds of years, the proportion of the elderly in the global population will continue to rise, a tendency that attracts increasing attention across multiple scientific and medical disciplines. Dental aging will bring a variety of problems to the elderly themselves and poses serious challenges to the medical profession and social system. A reduced, but functional dentition comprising 20 teeth in occlusion has been proposed as a measurement index of successful dental aging. Healthy dental aging is critical to healthy aging, from both medical and social perspectives. To date, biomedical research on the causes, processes and regulatory mechanisms of dental aging is still in its infancy. In this article, updated insights into typical manifestations, associated pathologies, preventive strategies and molecular changes of dental aging are provided, with future research directions largely projected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and periodontitis, focusing on how periodontal health impacts COPD airflow limitation, exacerbations, and hospitalization. BACKGROUND Periodontitis, a multifactorial inflammatory disease, is characterized by destruction of tooth-supporting structures, while COPD is a global pulmonary disorder with high mortality. METHODS A total of 199 COPD patients aged over 40 years underwent lung function tests (spirometry), 6 min walk test, and St George's Respiratory Questionnaire-COPD (SGRQ-C) to assess lung health. Periodontal indices such as probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and plaque index (PI) were assessed. RESULTS We found a significant negative correlation between periodontal disease severity and lung function (lower FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC ratio) after adjusting for smoking. Likewise, periodontal parameters (PPD, PI, and CAL) exhibited negative correlations with lung function. These periodontal indices were independently associated with airflow limitation severity, exacerbations frequency, and prior-year hospitalization. Linear regression indicated that each unit increase in PPD, PI, and CAL corresponded to estimated increases in GOLD airflow limitation grading (0.288, 0.718, and 0.193, respectively) and number of exacerbations (0.115, 0.041, and 0.109, respectively). In logistic regression, PPD, PI, and CAL adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were estimated to increase by 1.29 (95%CI: 1.03-1.62), 3.04 (95%CI: 1.28-7.2), and 1.26 (95%CI: 1.06-1.49), respectively, for hospitalization in previous year. CONCLUSION Periodontitis is associated with COPD airflow limitation, exacerbation, and hospitalization, with PI being the most clinically relevant periodontal factor. Dentists and physicians should monitor and increase awareness among COPD patients to maintain oral hygiene for prevention of periodontal diseases and mitigate its effect on COPD progression.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and periodontal disease are chronic inflammatory conditions that significantly affect an individual's overall health and well-being. Generally, the prevalence of periodontitis is higher in patients with COPD than those without COPD, which may partly be attributed to common risk factors in COPD, such as smoking, respiratory infections, and inflammation. In particular, periodontitis may exacerbate the progression of COPD and further deteriorate the respiratory system by promoting inflammatory responses and bacterial infections. Immunocytes, including neutrophils, and microorganisms such as Fusobacterium nucleatum originating from oral biofilms are believed to be crucial factors influencing to COPD. Furthermore, the potential benefits of treating periodontal disease in COPD outcomes have been investigated. Although the relationship between COPD and periodontal disease has been preliminarily studied, there is currently a lack of large-scale clinical studies to validate this association. In addition to clinical examinations, investigating biomarkers and microbiology may contribute to explore the underlying mechanisms involved in the management of these conditions. This review aims to contribute to a better understanding of the clinical and basic research aspects of COPD and periodontitis, allowing for potential therapeutic approaches and interdisciplinary management strategies.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common chronic bacteria-initiated inflammatory disease that is closely associated with various systemic diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Periodontitis and COPD share similar risk factors, pathology and microorganisms. Epidemiological and clinical research have shown positive correlation between the two diseases. Individuals with severe periodontitis had a higher risk of developing COPD. Moreover, the relative risk of COPD in severe periodontitis was much higher compared to people without periodontal disease and patients with mild to moderate periodontitis. COPD patients with periodontitis had a higher frequency of COPD exacerbation and periodontal treatment demonstrated some control of COPD. However, the nature of periodontitis affecting COPD still needs further exploration. Periodontitis caused microbial and immune imbalances of the lung through several aspects: (I) under periodontitis status, periodontal pathogens directly caused the lung inflammatory reaction after inhalation and colonization on the lung, (II) periodontitis status promoted the oral colonization of pneumonia-associated pathogens, (III) periodontitis status affected the respiratory epithelium structure and (IV) periodontitis status caused imbalances in neutrophils, macrophages and inflammatory cytokines. In this review, we conclude the association between periodontitis and COPD through several aspects and further discuss the potential mechanism by which periodontitis affects COPD.

Abstract
Diverse microbial communities colonize different habitats of the human body, including gut, oral cavity, nasal cavity and tissues. These microbial communities are known as human microbiome, plays a vital role in maintaining the health. However, changes in the composition and functions of human microbiome can result in chronic low-grade inflammation, which can damage the epithelial cells and allows pathogens and their toxic metabolites to translocate into other organs such as the liver, heart, and kidneys, causing metabolic inflammation. This dysbiosis of human microbiome has been directly linked to the onset of several non-communicable diseases. Recent metabolomics studies have revealed that pathogens produce several uraemic toxins. These metabolites can serve as inter-kingdom signals, entering the circulatory system and altering host metabolism, thereby aggravating a variety of diseases. Interestingly, Enterobacteriaceae, a critical member of Proteobacteria, has been commonly associated with several non-communicable diseases, and the abundance of this family has been positively correlated with uraemic toxin production. Hence, this review provides a comprehensive overview of Enterobacterial translocation and their metabolites role in non-communicable diseases. This understanding may lead to the identification of novel biomarkers for each metabolic disease as well as the development of novel therapeutic drugs.

Abstract
Objectives Studies have suggested contradictory results on the relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and periodontal disease (PD). The aim of this study was to determine whether PD increased the risk of COPD and COPD-related clinical events. Design A systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources PubMed, Ovid EMBASE and Ovid CENTRAL were searched from inception to 22 February 2023. Eligibility criteria for studies We included trials and observational studies evaluating association of PD with the risk of COPD or COPD-related events (exacerbation and mortality), with statistical adjustment for smoking. Data extraction and synthesis Two investigators independently extracted data from selected studies using a standardised Excel file. Quality of studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. OR with 95% CI was pooled in a random-effect model with inverse variance method. Results 22 observational studies with 51 704 participants were included. Pooled analysis of 18 studies suggested that PD was weakly associated with the risk of COPD (OR: 1.20, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.32). However, in stratified and subgroup analyses, with strict adjustment for smoking, PD no longer related to the risk of COPD (adjusting for smoking intensity: OR: 1.14, 95% CI 0.86 to 1.51; smokers only: OR: 1.46, 95% CI 0.92 to 2.31; never smokers only: OR: 0.93, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.21). Moreover, PD did not increase the risk of COPD-related exacerbation or mortality (OR: 1.18, 95% CI 0.71 to 1.97) in the pooled result of four studies. Conclusions This study demonstrates PD confers no risk for COPD and COPD-related events when strictly adjusted by smoking. Large-scale prospective cohort studies with control of potential confounding factors are warranted to validate the present findings.

Abstract
AIM To examine the relationship between periodontitis as an independent effect of smoking and the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Japanese people based on longitudinal data. MATERIALS AND METHODS We targeted 4745 people who underwent pulmonary function tests and dental check-ups at baseline and 8 years later. The Community Periodontal Index was used to assess periodontal status. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to examine the relationship between the incidence of COPD and periodontitis and smoking. To clarify the interaction between smoking and periodontitis, interaction analysis was performed. RESULTS In a multivariable analysis, both periodontitis and heavy smoking had significant effects on COPD development. When periodontitis was analysed as a continuous value (number of sextants with periodontitis) and as a category (presence or absence of periodontitis) in the multivariable analyses after adjusting for smoking, pulmonary function and other variables, periodontitis had significantly higher hazard ratios (HRs) for the incidence of COPD; the HRs were 1.09 (1.01-1.17) and 1.48 (1.09-2.02), respectively. Interaction analysis showed no significant interaction between heavy smoking and periodontitis on COPD. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that periodontitis has no interaction with smoking but has an independent effect on developing COPD.

Abstract
Oral microbiota have a complex impact on the host's health and disease states. It has been found that the composition of lung flora bears a striking resemblance to the composition of oral flora. Moreover, oral pathogenic bacteria have been detected in the sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), suggesting that oral microbiota play an important role in the pathogenesis and development of COPD. Findings from lots of studies have shown that oral microbiota may participate in the pathogenesis and development of COPD through non-specific immune response, specific immune response, and the activities of protein hydrolase. Herein, we mainly summarized the available evidence on the relationship between oral microbiota and COPD. By examining the relationship between the two, we elaborated on the application of oral microbiota in the diagnosis and prevention of COPD, discussed possible directions for future research, and provided references for developing new therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Innate immune cells are of broad interest in a variety of diseases. These cells include neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells and mast cells, etc. Innate immune cells are often mentioned in inflammatory diseases as the first line of defense against pathogens' invasion. As chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and periodontitis are inflammatory diseases, innate immune cells play an important role in the development of both diseases. COPD and periodontitis are common epidemic diseases with a very high prevalence, thus affecting a large number of people and also reducing the quality of life of patients. In addition, epidemiological studies suggested a link between the two, creating a co-morbid burden, but the mechanism of the link is yet to be explained. This article discusses the possible mechanism of the link between the two diseases in terms of innate immune cells and discusses possible future targeted therapies that could alleviate the burden on patients.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Apical Periodontitis and Other Oral Health Variables: A Case-Control Study. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Background: The relationship between chronic inflammatory diseases and their comorbidities and correlation with periodontal diseases has become an increasing focus of research. Objectives: The aim of this case-control study was to conclude if patients suffering from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) tend to have more AP (Apical Periodontitis) than non-COPD patients. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 30 patients assigned as cases, associated with 30 control patients linked by age (+/−5 years) and sex. Results: A total of 60 patients were recorded, and a total of 12 radiographic variables were analyzed. A total of 43 (71.7%) patients were registered with PAI (Periapical Index) ≥ 3, and there was a slightly tendency in the patients from the control group 22 (73.3%) compared to those from the cases 21 (70%), respectively (p > 0.05). Conclusions: It was concluded that there was not a significant association between the levels of PAI (Periapical Index) ≥ 3 per patient in those suffering from COPD. In fact, it could be concluded that patients diagnosed with COPD tend to have more teeth with PAI ≥ 3, more endodontic treatments and their periodontitis tended to accumulate more caries. Clinical Significance: This study establishes, in a case-control study, some specific aspects of oral health in patients with COPD, as well as analyzing the importance of oral health in this disease.

Abstract
Periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are chronic inflammatory diseases with common risk factors, such as long-term smoking, age, and social deprivation. Many observational studies have shown that periodontitis and COPD are correlated. Moreover, they share a common pathophysiological process involving local accumulation of inflammatory cells and cytokines and damage of soft tissues. The T helper 17 (Th17) cells and the related cytokines, interleukin (IL)-17, IL-22, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-23, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, play a crucial regulatory role during the pathophysiological process. This paper reviewed the essential roles of Th17 lineage in the occurrence of periodontitis and COPD. The gaps in the study of their common pathological mechanism were also evaluated to explore future research directions. Therefore, this review can provide study direction for the association between periodontitis and COPD and new ideas for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of the two diseases.

Abstract
Context: Periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are chronic progressive inflammatory conditions. Smoking has been associated with both chronic periodontitis and COPD. Hence, the present study was designed to correlate serum levels of cotinine with the severity of periodontal disease with or without COPD. Settings and Design: A total of eighty patients, twenty healthy individuals, twenty patients with chronic generalized periodontitis without smoking and without COPD, twenty patients who are smokers with chronic periodontitis without COPD and twenty patients who are smokers with chronic periodontitis and COPD in the age range of 43–65 years were selected for the study. Subjects and Methods: Serum cotinine level assessment, smoking history, and periodontal examination were done in all the patients and the data obtained were statistically analyzed. Results: The mean serum cotinine level was highest in smokers with chronic periodontitis and COPD (93.642 ± 14.727) and it differed significantly between the four groups (P < 0.001). There is a significant positive correlation between the number of cigarettes and serum cotinine levels in both groups involving smoking. There was no significant correlation between serum cotinine level and clinical attachment loss in chronic periodontitis smokers with or without COPD. Conclusions: The result of this study indicates that increased smoking with COPD causes a higher chance of progression of periodontal destruction but it is not statistically significant. Furthermore, this study indicates that the assessment of serum cotinine levels is a reliable method to evaluate smoking exposure.

Abstract
AIM Studies have found that periodontal disease and tooth loss are associated with increased mortality; however, associations with cause-specific mortality and all-cause mortality within specific subgroups have not been thoroughly investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS We examined the association of self-reported periodontal disease and disease/decay-related tooth loss with subsequent all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the Sister Study, a prospective cohort study of 50,884 women aged 35-74 years at baseline, whose sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the associations were calculated with adjustment for relevant confounders. RESULTS With a mean follow-up of 10.9 years (range 0.1-14.3), 2058 women died. Participants with periodontal disease had a slightly higher rate of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.08, 95% CI 0.98-1.19), while participants with tooth loss had an increased rate of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.05-1.26). For cause-specific mortality, women with tooth loss had increased rates of death from circulatory system diseases, respiratory system diseases, and endocrine/metabolic diseases. Results varied in stratified models, but no heterogeneity across strata was found. CONCLUSIONS In this large prospective study, periodontal disease and tooth loss were associated with all-cause and certain specific cause-specific mortality outcomes.

Abstract
The oral cavity (mouth) has various microbial habitats, including, teeth, gingival sulcus, gingiva, tongue, inner cheek, hard palate, and soft palate. The human oral cavity houses the second most diverse microbiome in the body harboring over 700 bacterial species. The fine-tuned equilibrium of the oral microbiome ecosystem maintains oral health. Oral dysbiosis caused by food habits and poor oral hygiene leads to various oral diseases such as periodontitis, caries, gingivitis, and oral cancer. Recent advances in technology have revealed the correlation between the oral microbiome and systemic diseases such as pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and other metabolic diseases. Since the oral cavity directly connects with the upper respiratory tract, the oral microbiome has easier access to the respiratory system compared to other organ systems. Direct aspiration of oral microflora in the respiratory system and oral dysbiosis-induced host immune reaction and inflammation are mainly responsible for various pulmonary complications. Numbers of literature have reported the correlation between oral diseases and pulmonary diseases, suggesting the possible role of the oral microbiome in respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, pneumonia, lung cancer, etc. This paper reviews the current evidence in establishing a link between the oral microbiome and pulmonary diseases. We also discuss future research directions focusing on the oral microbiome to unravel novel therapeutic approaches that could prevent or treat the various pulmonary complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal disease is one of the most common pathologies in the population. Self-reporting has been used as a diagnostic tool in large populations, among other reasons, to detect the needs of potentially vulnerable groups. This study evaluated the prevalence of periodontal disease in people of Spanish nationality and immigrants in Spain. METHODS This population-based, cross-sectional study was carried out using data obtained from National Health Interview Surveys (NHSs) carried out in 2006, 2011/2012 and 2017 in Spain. Subjects aged 16 years and older were included in the NHS-2006 and aged 15 years and older were included in the other NHSs. The following variables were self-reported by the participants: gum bleeding, tooth mobility, tooth extraction and missing teeth. Chi-square homogeneity tests were performed to assess the main associations between the independent variable (nationality) and the dependent variables (bleeding gums, tooth mobility, tooth extraction and missing teeth). Multinomial logistic regression models were constructed to evaluate the influences of the variables age and sex and their interactions on the main associations. RESULTS A total of 115,123 participants were included in the NHS-2006 (n = 37,327, 11.38% immigrants), NHS-2011/12 (n = 38,727, 14.39% immigrants) and NHS-2017 (n = 39,069, 13.71% immigrants). The variables directly related to periodontal disease were gum bleeding and tooth mobility. These were significantly associated with nationality in the NHS-2006 and NHS-2017 cohorts. In the NHS-2011/12 cohort, only tooth mobility was associated with nationality. After adjustments for sex, age, and their interactions, immigrant status was associated with increased odds of bleeding in only the NHS-2006 cohort (RR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.38-1.99, p = 0.000). CONCLUSION Immigrants in Spain have a lower probability of developing signs associated with periodontal disease than the Spanish population. Among the immigrant cohort, females and those in adult age groups had lower prevalence rates than their counterparts.

Abstract
AIMS We aim i) to describe self-reported oral health among patients with diabetes in Spain; ii) to recognize which variables (socio-demographic, lifestyle and health-related), were related to poor self-reported oral health in patients with diabetes. METHODS We used data from subjects of the National Health Interview Survey performed in 2017. Diabetes status was self-reported. One non-diabetes patient was matched by gender and age for each diabetes case. Poor self-reported oral health was defined using the answers "I have dental caries" to the following question: "What is the state of your teeth and molars?". Socieconomic, demographic, comorbidities, health status, health care-related were independent variables. RESULTS We found that the prevalence of dental caries was higher among subjects with diabetes than their matched controls (23.8% vs. 16.5%; P < 0.001). The OR of dental caries for people with diabetes was 1.45 (95% CI 1.12-1.30). Older age, having lower monthly income, obesity, periodontal disease, very poor/poor/ fair self-rated health and having public dental health insurance increased the probability of suffering caries. CONCLUSIONS Poor self-reported oral health was higher among people with diabetes compared to non-diabetes controls. Physicians and dentists should increase their awareness with their patients with diabetes, especially those with obesity, younger and with lower education.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate clinical periodontal status and microbiologic pathogens in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and periodontitis. Patients and Methods We conducted a case–control study of 60 periodontitis patients with COPD (case group) and 60 periodontitis patients with normal pulmonary function (control group). Their periodontal status and respiratory function were clinically examined. Real-time polymerase chain reaction assays were used to measure five dental pathogens and four respiratory pathogens in subgingival dental plaque. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients (r2) were calculated to assess correlations of pathogens. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to assess the similarity of bacterial diversity between the two groups. Logistic regression was performed to examine the associations of periodontal variables and pathogens with COPD risk. Results COPD patients had fewer remaining teeth, higher plaque index (PLI), and more severe site percentages of clinical attachment level (CAL) than the controls. Although COPD patients tended to have relatively higher ranked means of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythensis, Treponema denticola, and Haemophilus influenza than control participants, the differences were not significant. Some periodontal pathogens and respiratory pathogens were positively correlated with each other (r2 =0.29 to 0.47, all P < 0.05). The PCA graph showed that the distributions of pathogens were more dispersed but less discriminated in the COPD group than those in the control group. PLI (P = 0.045) and CAL ≥ 5mm site percentages (P = 0.01) were significantly associated with an increased risk of COPD, while pathogens were not associated with COPD. Conclusion Our results from this study do not indicate periodontal pathogens as potential predictors of COPD risk, despite significantly poor periodontal status associated with COPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a major bacterium responsible for the progression of periodontitis. P. gingivalis produces small vesicles called outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) containing virulence factors. Increasing evidence suggests a close relationship between periodontitis and respiratory system diseases, such as aspiration pneumonia. However, little is known about whether P. gingivalis OMVs give rise to the impediment of lung epithelial cells. We investigated the effect of the OMVs on cell viability and tight junctions of lung epithelial cells. DESIGN Human lung epithelial A549 cells were treated with P. gingivalis OMVs. Cell viability was evaluated, and cell morphology was examined using scanning electron and phase contrast microscopies. To detect apoptosis induced by P. gingivalis OMVs, activation of caspase-3 and poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) cleavage was examined by using Western blotting. Immunocytochemistry was performed to stain tight junction proteins. RESULTS P. gingivalis OMVs decreased cell viability in A549 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Microscopic analysis revealed that the OMVs induced morphological changes leading to irregular cell membrane structures. The OMVs caused cell shrinkage, membrane blebbing, and cytoplasmic expulsion in a dose-dependent manner. Western blot analysis showed the OMVs induced caspase-3 activation and PARP cleavage. Treatment with the OMVs disrupted the intact distributions of tight junction proteins. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that P. gingivalis OMVs induced cell death by destroying the barrier system in lung epithelial cells. Our present study raises the possibility that P. gingivalis OMVs is an important factor in the engagement of periodontitis with respiratory system diseases.

Abstract
Evidence for an association between periodontitis and respiratory disease in the older patients is limited. Additionally, little information exists regarding the role of potential effect modifiers. The aim of this study is to examine whether periodontitis increases the risk of respiratory disease mortality in older patients. Between January 2010 and December 2014, 1385 patients aged 75 years and above who underwent radiographic examination in the largest dental hospital in Shanghai, China were included in this retrospective cohort study. The dental examination was made with the panoramic radiographs. Demographic information and comorbid health conditions were collected from local health authorities. Participant follow up was continued until either the occurrence of mortality, or the end of the study on December 31, 2018. Cox proportional hazards regression and competing risk hazard models were performed to examine the association between periodontitis and respiratory disease mortality. We found that periodontitis was associated with total respiratory disease mortality. Compared with healthy participants, the hazards ratio and 95% confidence interval for total respiratory disease mortality in patients with severe periodontitis was 2.72(1.04,7.11) after adjusting for relevant confounding variables. With increasing severity of periodontitis, risks for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) mortality also increased significantly (P = .038). Smokers and participants with body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2 were at increased risk. Loss of teeth was not associated with either total respiratory disease or COPD mortality. Although the present study cannot ascertain causal association, it provides substantial evidence that poor periodontal health is associated with respiratory disease in the older patients, particularly in smokers and patients with BMI < 25 kg/m2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between oral health and systemic conditions has been increasingly debated over recent decades with one such discussion existing about oral hygiene and periodontitis with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Hence, a study was conducted to assess and compare the oral hygiene status and periodontal status of age and gender-matched participants with and without COPD and to correlate oral hygiene status and periodontal status with lung function status among them. MATERIALS AND METHODS This hospital-based study included a study population of 117 participants (39 patients of COPD and 78 participants without COPD) 35-75 years of age with at least 20 natural teeth. Participant's demographic details and history of smoking were recorded. Lung function was recorded using a spirometer. Periodontal health was assessed by measuring Probing Pocket Depth (PPD), Clinical Attachment Loss (CAL), and Oral Hygiene Index (OHI) by a trained and calibrated examiner. RESULTS Higher mean of PPD, CAL, and OHI is being reported in the present study with 4.07 versus 3.50, 0.58 versus 0.24, and 5.24 versus 3.60, respectively, among patients with and without COPD which was statistically significant. The risk of having COPD was 0.4 times more in participants having poor oral hygiene and 0.07 times more in patients smoking. Smoking and oral hygiene, as independent variables, have a significant influence on COPD which is a dependent variable. A weak correlation was found of poor oral hygiene and loss of attachment among participants with COPD. CONCLUSION Periodontitis and respiratory disease share a common risk factor, i.e., smoking. Smoking has a definite relation with periodontitis and COPD. Oral hygiene is significantly associated with increased risk for COPD when age and gender effects have been matched and when adjusted for smoking. However, no association was found of PPD with COPD.

Prevalence of Periodontitis and its Association with Reduced Pulmonary Function: Results from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Abstract
Background and Objectives: The current study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of periodontitis and to examine the association between reduced pulmonary function and periodontitis using Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2014. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional evaluation was conducted to estimate the prevalence of periodontitis and to examine the association between periodontitis and reduced pulmonary function while adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and current smoking status in survey participants between 40 and 79 years old. The presence of periodontitis was evaluated by community periodontal index defined by the World Health Organization, and the assessments of reduced pulmonary function data were made as “normal,” “restrictive impairment,” or “obstructive impairment.” Results: A total of 4004 survey participants representing 25.4 million Koreans were included in the study. Overall, 41.1% of the study population were determined to have periodontitis, and 22.1% had reduced pulmonary function; 7.9% and 14.2% had restrictive- and obstructive- pulmonary impairments, respectively. Age, male gender, and current smoking status were positive predictors for periodontitis. Insurance coverage by workplace and higher education were protective factors against periodontitis. The association between periodontitis and restrictive impairment (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.059, 95% CI 0.729–1.540) or obstructive impairment (adjusted OR = 1.140, 95% CI 0.849–1.530) was not significant. Conclusions: For Koreans, 40–79 years old, age, smoking status, gender, education, and insurance coverage were significant predictors of periodontitis. The prevalence of periodontitis was not significantly associated with reduced pulmonary function. To better understand the relationship between periodontitis and reduced pulmonary function, well-designed and larger scale epidemiologic studies are needed.
