Association of AST/ALT ratio with 90-day outcomes in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic liver disease: a prospective multicenter cohort study in China

Background and aim

A high aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio is associated with liver injury in liver disease; however, no data exist regarding its relationship with 90-day prognosis in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic liver disease.

Methods

In this study, 3,758 participants (955 with advanced fibrosis and 2,803 with cirrhosis) from the CATCH-LIFE cohort in China were included. The relationships between different AST/ALT ratios and the risk of adverse 90-day outcomes (death or liver transplantation) were determined in patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated advanced fibrosis, respectively.

Results

In the patients with HBV-associated advanced fibrosis, the risk of 90-day adverse outcomes increased with AST/ALT ratio; after adjusting for all confounding factors, the risk of adverse 90-day outcomes was the highest when AST/ALT ratio was more than 1.08 (OR = 6.91 [95% CI = 1.789-26.721], p = 0.005), and the AST/ALT ratio of >1.9 accelerated the development of adverse outcomes. In patients with cirrhosis, an AST/ALT ratio > 1.38 increased the risk of adverse 90-day outcomes in all univariables (OR = 1.551 [95% CI = 1.216-1.983], p < 0.001) and multivariable-adjusted analyses (OR = 1.847 [95% CI = 1.361-2.514], p < 0.001), and an elevated AST/ALT ratio (<2.65) accelerated the incidence of 90-day adverse outcomes. An AST/ALT ratio of >1.38 corresponded with a more than 20% incidence of adverse outcomes in patients with cirrhosis.

Conclusion

The AST/ALT ratio is an independent risk factor for adverse 90-day outcomes in patients with cirrhosis and HBV-associated advanced fibrosis. The cutoff values of the AST/ALT ratio could help clinicians monitor the condition of patients when making clinical decisions.

The association of aspartate transaminase-to-alanine transaminase ratio and metabolic syndrome among HIV patients in Sidama Region, South Ethiopia

Objective

Studies on the association of the aspartate transaminase-to-alanine transaminase ratio with the metabolic syndrome and its components among HIV patients were scarce. This study aims to determine the association between the aspartate transaminase-to-alanine transaminase ratio and the metabolic syndrome and its components in adult HIV patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Methods

This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 302 HIV patients from January 15 to June 30, 2021. Sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The patient's medical records were reviewed. Biochemical analysis was performed after 5 ml of venous blood was collected from each study participant. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the third report of the national cholesterol education program-adult treatment panel. Logistic regression was done to assess the association of MetS with the independent variables, and correlation analysis was performed to see the correlation of MetS components with the aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio.

Result

302 HIV-positive patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy were included in this study, and 54.6% were female. The median and interquartile range of the age of the study participants were 41 (35-50) years. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 29.5% (confidence interval = 24.5-35.1). Chronic illness (Adjusted odds ratio = 4.8, confidence interval = 2.2-10.9) and aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio (adjusted odds ratio = 2.5, confidence interval = 1.4-4.4) were significantly associated with Metabolic syndrome among the study participants. The aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio was significantly correlated with blood pressure.

Conclusion

This study found the existence of a significant association between the aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio and metabolic syndrome among HIV patients.

Factors predicting 30-day mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy-the impact of elevated aspartate aminotransferase

PURPOSE

High preoperative bilirubin levels and cholangitis are associated with poor peri-operative outcomes following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). However, the impact of deranged preoperative aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels on immediate postoperative outcomes is relatively unexplored. We hypothesized that deranged AST and ALT lead to worse postoperative outcomes after PD. The aim of this study was to assess the factors contributing to postoperative mortality (POM) following PD, and to study the impact of deranged aminotransferases.

METHODS

This is a retrospective analysis of 562 patients. Risk factors for POM were computed using a multivariate logistic regression model.

RESULTS

The rate of POM was 3.9%. On univariate analysis, the American Society of Anaesthesiologists grades, diabetes mellitus, cardiac comorbidity, preoperative biliary stenting, elevated serum bilirubin, AST, elevated serum creatinine, clinically relevant pancreatic fistula (CRPF), and grade B+C post-pancreatectomy hemorrhage (PPH) were associated with 30-day mortality. On multivariate analysis, preoperative elevated AST was independently predictive of 30-day POM (OR = 6.141, 95%CI 2.060-18.305, p = 0.001). Other factors independently predictive of POM were elevated serum creatinine, preoperative biliary stenting, CRPF and grade B and C PPH. The ratio of AST/ALT > 0.89 was associated with 8 times increased odds of POM.

CONCLUSION

Elevated preoperative AST emerged as a predictor of 30-day POM after PD, with an 8-times increased odds of death with an AST/ALT ratio > 0.89.

Low aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (DeRitis) ratio assists in predicting diabetes in Chinese population

Background

Few studies discussed the predictive ability of aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT, DeRitis) ratio for diabetes risk. The aim of this study was to characterize the role of AST/ALT ratio in the prediction of Chinese diabetes.

Methods

This retrospective cohort study analyzed a Chinese population comprising 87,883 participants without diabetes at baseline between 2010 and 2016. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to identify independent risk factors. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was performed to investigate the non-linear correlation between AST/ALT ratio and diabetes risk.

Results

During a median follow-up period of 3.01 years, 1,877 participants developed diabetes. Comparing the baseline characteristics, diabetes group exhibited lower AST/ALT ratio. The Kaplan-Meier curve showed that participants with low AST/ALT ratio had higher cumulative incidence, and Cox regression also demonstrated that the lower AST/ALT ratio, the higher diabetes risk (HR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.37-0.85, P = 0.006). The RCS model revealed a non-linear correlation between AST/ALT ratio and diabetes risk. In the condition of AST/ALT ratio ≤1.18, diabetes risk increased as it decreased (HR: 0.42, 95% CI: 0.19-0.91, P = 0.028). In contrast, AST/ALT ratio did not independently affect diabetes when beyond 1.18.

Conclusion

AST/ALT ratio is a valuable predictor of diabetes. Diabetes risk increases rapidly in the condition of AST/ALT ratio ≤1.18.

Updated reference ranges for aminotransferase levels of Korean children and young adolescents based on the risk factors for metabolic syndrome

We investigated the reference values of liver enzymes based on cardiometabolic risks among children and adolescents using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 8091 subjects aged 10-18 years were included from the data from 2007-2017. Overall, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and the AST/ALT ratio varied with sex and age. AST levels tended to decrease with age, but ALT levels had a U-shaped curve, which resulted in a gradual increase in the AST/ALT ratio after age 13. The prevalence of MetS was strongly associated with elevated AST or ALT and a decreased AST/ALT ratio. The prevalence ratios of the development of MetS were also elevated in groups with high levels of AST and ALT and a low AST/ALT ratio. Particularly in the combined ALT and AST/ALT analyses, borderline-high levels also showed a high prevalence ratio of MetS. Liver enzymes were also involved in the increase in the adjusted mean values for each risk factor for MetS. Here, we provided updated reference values for liver enzymes based on the analysis between population-based data and cardiometabolic risk factors; AST, ALT and the AST/ALT ratio might be useful in the early diagnosis and treatment of MetS.

Aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio and the risk of diabetic nephropathy progression in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A biopsy-based study

PURPOSE

To study the relationship between baseline serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AAR) in both clinicopathological features and renal outcome among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with biopsy-confirmed diabetic nephropathy (DN).

METHODS

As a retrospective cohort study, we included 253 patients with T2DM and biopsy-confirmed DN. For receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that the optimal cut-off for AAR to predict end stage renal disease (ESRD) was 1.22. So, patients were divided into two groups according to their AAR at the time of renal biopsy: high AAR Group (those with AAR > 1.22); low AAR Group (those with AAR ≤1.22). Association between AAR and clinicopathological features as well as renal outcome were analyzed.

RESULTS

Patients with higher AAR presented elder, more hypertensive, more insulin use, higher serum cholesterol, more proteinuria and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Compared with low AAR group, patients with high AAR had more severe glomerular pathological lesions and interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy. For prognostic analysis, high AAR Group was associated with a higher risk of progression to ESRD in univariate analysis. No matter treated with continuous or categorical variate, higher AAR remained an independent predictor for ESRD after adjusted for various confounding factors: gender, age, the duration of diabetes, serum glucose level, hypertension, serum lipid level, smoking, insulin use, eGFR and proteinuria.

CONCLUSION

High AAR was associated with more severe renal pathologic lesions and worse renal function in patients with T2DM and DN, which might be a novel noninvasive predictor for ESRD.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

To our knowledge, there was no biopsy-based cohort study. In our study, high AAR was associated with more severe renal pathologic lesions and worse renal function in patients with T2DM and DN, which might be a novel noninvasive predictor of ESRD for patients with DN.

Evaluation of the relationship between aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio and coronary slow-flow phenomenon

Aim: To assess the correlation between the ratio of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and slow coronary flow (SCF). Methods: A total of 119 patients with SCF and 121 age- and sex-matched patients with normal coronary flow were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count of angiography images was marked by two interventionalists. In addition to AST and ALT levels, complete blood count; kidney, liver and thyroid function tests; age; sex; medication and medical history were recorded. Results: Significant spikes in AST/ALT ratio were discovered in the SCF group compared with the normal coronary flow group (p < 0.001). Thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count values were significantly higher in all coronaries for the SCF group compared with the normal coronary flow group (p < 0.001). Thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count values of the left anterior descending artery (r = 0.258; p < 0.001), left circumflex artery (r = 0.297; p < 0.001) and right coronary artery (r = 0.195; p = 0.002) were positively correlated with AST/ALT ratio. Conclusion: AST/ALT ratio is significantly correlated with SCF; therefore, this ratio may have predictive value.

Elevated AST/ALT ratio is associated with all-cause mortality and cancer incident

Background

The aspartate transaminase (AST)‐to‐alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio, which is used to measure liver injury, has been found to be associated with some chronic diseases and mortality. However, its relevance to cancer incidence resulting from population‐based prospective studies has rarely been reported. In this study, we investigated the correlation of the AST/ALT ratio as a possible predictor of mortality and cancer incidence.

Methods

A total of 9,946 participants fulfilled the inclusion criteria for a basic public health service project of the Health Checkup Program conducted by the BaiYun Community Health Service Center, Taizhou. Deceased participants and cancer incident cases were from The Taizhou Chronic Disease Information Management System. Odds ratios (ORs) and interval of quartile range (IQR) computed by logistic regression analysis and cumulative incidence rate were calculated by the Kaplan–Meier survival method and compared with log‐rank test statistics.

Results

Serum ALT and AST levels were both increased in patients with chronic diseases, but the ratio of AST/ALT was generally decreased. The cancer incident cases (488 new cases) had a greater baseline ratio (median =1.23, IQR: 0.96–1.54) than noncancer cases (median =1.15, IQR: 0.91–1.44). Compared to the first quartile of the AST/ALT ratio, the population in the top quartile had a higher cumulative cancer incidence rate (7.54% vs. 4.44%) during follow‐up period. Furthermore, an elevated AST/ALT ratio increased the risk of all‐cause mortality.

Conclusions

The ratio of AST/ALT is a potential biomarker to assess healthy conditions and long‐term mortality. Especially for cancer, the AST/ALT ratio not only increases at baseline but also predicts the future development of cancer. The clinical value and potential mechanism deserve further research.

Association between aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio and insulin resistance among US adults

OBJECTIVE

To determine whether a low aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AST/ALT ratio) is associated with insulin resistance among those without liver dysfunction.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2016, we included 2747 (1434 male and 1313 nonpregnant female) adults ≥20 years without evidence of liver dysfunction (ALT<30 in male and <19 in female, negative viral serologies, no excess alcohol consumption, no elevated transferrin saturation, AST/ALT <2). Serum AST/ALT ratio was categorized into sex-specific quartiles (female: <1.12, 1.12-1.29, 1.29-1.47, ≥1.47 and male: <0.93, 0.93-1.09, 1.09-1.26, ≥1.26). The primary outcome was insulin resistance, as determined by Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index score ≥3. Covariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were estimated. Study analysis completed from 13 March 2020 to 21 April 2021.

RESULTS

Among the 2747 individuals, 33% had insulin resistance. Those in the lowest quartile (Q1) of AST/ALT had 75% higher adjusted odds of insulin resistance compared to the highest quartile (Q4) [aOR (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.75 (1.20-2.57)]. This association was more pronounced in those with elevated BMI [Q1 vs. Q4; BMI ≥ 25: 2.29 (1.58-3.33), BMI < 25: 0.66 (0.26-1.69); NAFLD per Fatty Liver Index ≥ 60: 2.04 (1.21-3.44), No NAFLD: 1.68 (0.94-3.01)].

CONCLUSION

Lower AST/ALT ratio is associated with increased insulin resistance among those with healthy-range ALT, especially in those with BMI greater than or equal to 25 kg/m2.

AST-to-ALT ratio in the first trimester and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND

Aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine transaminase ratio (AST/ALT) has been reported affect the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but it is uncertain if it has relationship with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

OBJECTIVES

Our study aimed to investigate the association between AST/ALT ratio in the first trimester and the risk of subsequent development of GDM.

METHOD

This prospective cohort study enrolling 870 pregnant women, 204 pregnant women with missing data or liver diseases were excluded, 666 pregnant women were included in this study containing 94 GDM women. Blood samples were collected in the first trimester. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between AST/ALT and GDM. Nomogram was established based on the results of multivariate logistic analysis. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves were used to evaluate the predictive ability of this nomogram model for GDM. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to examine the clinical net benefit of predictive model.

RESULTS

AST/ALT ratio (RR:0.228; 95% CI:0.107-0.488) was associated with lower risk of GDM after adjusting for confounding factors. Indicators used in nomogram including AST/ALT, maternal age, preBMI, waist circumference, glucose, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and parity. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) value of this predictive model was 0.778, 95% CI (0.724, 0.832). Calibration curves for GDM probabilities showed acceptable agreement between nomogram predictions and observations. The DCA curve demonstrated a good positive net benefit in the predictive model.

CONCLUSIONS

The early AST/ALT level of pregnant women negatively correlated with the risk of GDM. The nomogram including AST/ALT at early pregnancy shows good predictive ability for the occurrence of GDM.

Nonlinear Relationship Between AST-to-ALT Ratio and the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Follow-Up Study

Background

The aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio has been demonstrated to be associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. However, few studies have directly explored the association between the AST/ALT ratio and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). As such, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the AST/ALT ratio and incident T2DM during follow-up in a population-based cohort.

Methods

This retrospective cohort analysis included 15,464 Japanese males and females without DM at baseline between 2004 and 2015. The association between AST/ALT ratio and T2DM was retrospectively examined using the Cox proportional hazard model after adjusting for multiple potential confounders.

Results

After follow-up, 373 (2.41%) patients developed T2DM. A nonlinear relationship between the AST/ALT ratio and T2DM was observed after adjusting for potential confounders. The risk for developing T2DM decreased with AST/ALT ratio up to a threshold of 0.93 (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.14 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.02-0.90; P = 0.0385]). An AST/ALT ratio >0.93 was not associated with the risk for developing T2DM (adjusted HR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.17-2.65; P = 0.5718).

Conclusion

The AST/ALT ratio was associated with a lower incidence of T2DM in a nonlinear pattern. The threshold AST/ALT ratio for developing T2DM was 0.93. AST/ALT levels were inversely correlated with the occurrence of T2DM when AST/ALT ratio ≤0.93.

The association between AST/ALT ratio and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with hypertension

Previous studies had shown that an increased aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AST/ALT ratio) was associated with cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to assess the relationship between AST/ALT ratio and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with hypertension.By March 31, 2020, a cohort of 14,220 Chinese hypertensive patients was followed up. The end point was all-cause and cardiovascular death. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs were calculated for mortality associated with AST/ALT ratio, using Cox proportional hazards models and competing risk model.In an average of 1.7 years of follow-up, 1.39% (n = 198) of patients died, 55.5% (n = 110) of whom from cardiovascular disease. AST/ALT ratio was associated with increased risk of all-cause death (HR:1.37, 95% CI:1.15-1.63) and cardiovascular death (HR:1.32, 95% CI:1.03-1.68) after adjustment for other potential confounders. Compared with low AST/ALT ratio (Tertile 1), high AST/ALT ratio was associated with high cause mortality (Tertile 2: HR:1.35, 95% CI:0.86-2.10; Tertile 3: HR:2.10, 95% CI:1.37-3.21; P for trend <.001). Compared with low AST/ALT ratio (Tertile 1), a statistically significant increased risk of cardiovascular mortality was also observed (Tertile 2: HR:1.27, 95% CI:0.70-2.29; Tertile 3: HR:1.92, 95% CI:1.09-3.37; P for trend <.001). High AST/ALT ratio was also associated with high cardiovascular mortality (Tertile 2: HR:1.27, 95% CI:0.70-2.29; Tertile 3: HR:1.92, 95% CI:1.09-3.37; P for trend <.001).Present study indicated that increased AST/ALT ratio levels were predictive of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among Chinese hypertensive patients.Trial registration: CHICTR, CHiCTR1800017274. Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics-2021 Update: A Report From the American Heart Association

BACKGROUND

The American Heart Association, in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, annually reports the most up-to-date statistics related to heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular risk factors, including core health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, diet, and weight) and health factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose control) that contribute to cardiovascular health. The Statistical Update presents the latest data on a range of major clinical heart and circulatory disease conditions (including stroke, congenital heart disease, rhythm disorders, subclinical atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, valvular disease, venous disease, and peripheral artery disease) and the associated outcomes (including quality of care, procedures, and economic costs).

METHODS

The American Heart Association, through its Statistics Committee, continuously monitors and evaluates sources of data on heart disease and stroke in the United States to provide the most current information available in the annual Statistical Update. The 2021 Statistical Update is the product of a full year's worth of effort by dedicated volunteer clinicians and scientists, committed government professionals, and American Heart Association staff members. This year's edition includes data on the monitoring and benefits of cardiovascular health in the population, an enhanced focus on social determinants of health, adverse pregnancy outcomes, vascular contributions to brain health, the global burden of cardiovascular disease, and further evidence-based approaches to changing behaviors related to cardiovascular disease.

RESULTS

Each of the 27 chapters in the Statistical Update focuses on a different topic related to heart disease and stroke statistics.

CONCLUSIONS

The Statistical Update represents a critical resource for the lay public, policy makers, media professionals, clinicians, health care administrators, researchers, health advocates, and others seeking the best available data on these factors and conditions.

The Association of Aspartate Aminotransferase/Alanine Aminotransferase Ratio with Diabetic Nephropathy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

PURPOSE

To investigate the relationship between aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AST/ALT) and diabetic nephropathy (DN).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A total of 402 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided into three groups, such as normoalbuminuria (n = 196), microalbuminuria (n = 131) and macroalbuminuria (n = 75) groups. Basic information and laboratory results were collected. Serum AST/ALT, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and interferon- γ (INF- γ) were also measured. DN was defined as microalbuminuria or macroalbuminuria. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the following formula: 186 × (serum creatinine)^-1.154× (age)^-0.203× (0.742 if female).

RESULTS

The AST/ALT in the macroalbuminuria group was higher than in the microalbuminuria and normoalbuminuria groups. The concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-2, IL-4, IL-10 and INF-γ in the macroalbuminuria group were significantly higher than those in the two other groups. Multivariate logistical analysis showed that after adjusting confounding factors, TNF-α and high AST/ALT were independent risks for DN and macroalbuminuria. Furthermore, the AST/ALT had significantly positive correlation with TNF-α (r = 0.101, P = 0.048), IL-4 (r = 0.185, P = 0.005) and IL-6 (r = 0.274, P < 0.001) levels.

CONCLUSION

This study showed that high AST/ALT was an independent risk factor for the DN. Additionally, AST/ALT was positively correlated with inflammation cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-4 and IL-6 levels.

Body Mass Index and Its Change from Adolescence to Adulthood Are Closely Related to the Risk of Adult Metabolic Syndrome in China

AIMS

To investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) and its change from adolescence to adulthood (ΔBMI) on the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in early adulthood.

METHODS

We selected 931 students from 12 to 16 years of age in Liaoyang City, China. Ninety-three participants from 18 to 22 years of age with complete baseline data were available for follow-up after 5 years. Statistical analysis determined the relationship of MetS at follow-up with baseline BMI (BMI_b), ΔBMI, and follow-up BMI (BMI_f).

RESULTS

ΔBMI was positively correlated with the change of waist circumference (ΔWC), systolic blood pressure (ΔSBP), triglycerides (ΔTG), uric acid, and glycosylated hemoglobin (ΔHbA1c) in follow-up (p < 0.05). For every 1 kg/m² increase in BMI_b, ΔBMI, and BMI_f, the risk of MetS at follow-up increased 1.201-fold, 1.406-fold, and 1.579-fold, respectively. Both BMI_b and ΔBMI were predictive of MetS at follow-up, with prediction thresholds of 23.47 kg/m² and 1.95 kg/m². The participants were divided by the predicted BMI_b and ΔBMI threshold values into four study groups. Interestingly, the group with lower BMI but a higher increase in BMI presented the same metabolic derangements and Mets% of the group with higher BMI but lower Δ BMI.

CONCLUSION

Both BMI of adolescence and ΔBMI were predictive of MetS and cardiovascular risk factors in adulthood. Control of both variables in adolescents would be more effective in decreasing the risk of MetS in young adults than control of BMI alone.
