Abstract
Metabolic syndrome during menopause can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and increased mortality rates. Hormone replacement therapy is recommended to manage climacteric complications, but it has serious adverse effects. This study, therefore, investigated the potential of supplementing some minerals, vitamins, and natural products like boric acid, magnesium, vitamin D3, and extra virgin olive oil on metabolic status of menopausal ovariectomized rats. Fourty-two female adult rats were randomly assigned to seven groups: a) Sham Control, b) Ovariectomized Control, c) Ovariectomized + Boric acid, d) Ovariectomized + Magnesium, e) Ovariectomized + Vitamin D3, f) Ovariectomized + Extra virgin olive oil, and g) Ovariectomized + Combined treatment groups. Serum inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, serum lipogram pattern, hepatic triglycerides, body weight, fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, leptin, and adiponectin, as well as hepatic insulin signaling cascade, IRS1/pAKT/GLUT4 were measured in each group to assess metabolic function. Results revealed a significant improvement in inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic parameters by individual and concomitant treating ovariectomized rats with boric acid, magnesium, vitamin D3, and extra virgin olive oil. Interestingly, the concurrent use of these supplements displayed a better impact than individual use, suggesting their valuable therapeutic potential for managing metabolic syndrome in menopausal women. However, the necessity of all four supplements for optimal therapeutic effects remains unsubstantiated.

Abstract
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by painful sinus tracts and significant scarring. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the pathogenesis and outcomes of HS. This systematic review aims to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D levels and HS, exploring potential therapeutic benefits of vitamin D supplementation. This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (ID:CRD42024566092). A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Medline (OVID), and Web of Science using the keywords "hidradenitis suppurativa" and "vitamin D." Studies were screened for relevance, and non-randomized studies were assessed for quality using the MINORS score. Due to the heterogeneity of clinical outcome measures, a qualitative analysis was performed. A total of 77 records were identified, with 38 articles remaining after duplicates were removed. After full-text screening, 8 studies met the inclusion criteria. These studies, published between 2014 and 2024, included case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies. High prevalence rates of vitamin D deficiency (75-100%) were consistently observed among HS patients. Improved clinical outcomes with vitamin D supplementation were noted in several studies. There were significant correlations between vitamin D deficiency and higher clinical severity, and genetic alterations in vitamin D metabolism and keratinization pathways were identified in HS patients. This systematic review demonstrates a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and HS. Vitamin D's role in immune regulation and anti-inflammatory processes suggests its potential as a therapeutic agent for HS. However, further research is needed to determine optimal dosing and assess the protective effects of vitamin D supplementation in HS management.

Abstract
Prior studies have suggested that immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) may display seasonal variation; however, methodologic limitations and sample sizes have diminished the ability to perform a rigorous assessment. This 5-year retrospective study assessed the epidemiology of iTTP and determined whether it displays a seasonal pattern. Patients with both initial and relapsed iTTP (defined as a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type motifs 13 activity <10%) from 24 tertiary centers in Australia, Canada, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, and the US were included. Seasons were defined as: Northern Hemisphere-winter (December-February); spring (March-May); summer (June-August); autumn (September-November) and Southern Hemisphere-winter (June-August); spring (September-November); summer (December-February); autumn (March-May). Additional outcomes included the mean temperature in months with and without an iTTP episode at each site. A total of 583 patients experienced 719 iTTP episodes. The observed proportion of iTTP episodes during the winter was significantly greater than expected if equally distributed across seasons (28.5%, 205/719, 25.3%-31.9%; p = .03). Distance from the equator and mean temperature deviation both positively correlated with the proportion of iTTP episodes during winter. Acute iTTP episodes were associated with the winter season and colder temperatures, with a second peak during summer. Occurrence during winter was most pronounced at sites further from the equator and/or with greater annual temperature deviations. Understanding the etiologies underlying seasonal patterns of disease may assist in discovery and development of future preventative therapies and inform models for resource utilization.

Abstract
Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often experience acute kidney injury, linked to disease severity or mortality, along with renal tubular dysfunction and megalin loss in proximal tubules. Megalin plays a crucial role in kidney vitamin D metabolism. However, the impact of megalin loss on vitamin D metabolism during COVID-19 is unclear. This study investigated whether severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection reduces megalin expression in proximal tubules and its subsequent effect on vitamin D metabolism in mice expressing human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (K18-hACE2 mice). Histological and immunohistochemical staining analyses revealed glomerular and capillary congestion, and elevated renal neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin levels, indicative of acute kidney injury in K18-hACE2 mice. In SARS-CoV-2-infected mice, immunohistochemical staining revealed suppressed megalin protein levels. Decreased vitamin D receptor (VDR) localization in the nucleus and increased mRNA expression of VDR, CYP27B1, and CYP24A1 were observed by quantitative PCR in SARS-CoV-2-infected mice. Serum vitamin D levels remained similar in infected and vehicle-treated mice, but an increase in tumor necrosis factor-alpha and a decrease in IL-4 mRNA expression were observed in the kidneys of the SARS-CoV-2 group. These findings suggest that megalin loss in SARS-CoV-2 infection may impact the local role of vitamin D in kidney immunomodulation, even when blood vitamin D levels remain unchanged.

Abstract
Olfactory loss accompanies at least 139 neurological, somatic, and congenital/hereditary conditions. This observation leads to the question of whether these associations are correlations or whether they are ever causal. Temporal precedence and prospective predictive power suggest that olfactory loss is causally implicated in many medical conditions. The causal relationship between olfaction with memory dysfunction deserves particular attention because this sensory system has the only direct projection to memory centers. Mechanisms that may underlie the connections between medical conditions and olfactory loss include inflammation as well as neuroanatomical and environmental factors, and all 139 of the medical conditions listed here are also associated with inflammation. Olfactory enrichment shows efficacy for both prevention and treatment, potentially mediated by decreasing inflammation.

Abstract
Introduction Human periodontal ligament-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hPDL-MSCs) possess a strong ability to modulate the immune response, executed via cytokine-boosted paracrine and direct cell-to-cell contact mechanisms. This reciprocal interaction between immune cells and hPDL-MSCs is influenced by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin-D3 (1,25(OH)2D3). In this study, the participation of different immunomodulatory mechanisms on the hPDL-MSCs-based effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 on CD4+ T lymphocytes will be elucidated using different co-culture models with various cytokine milieus. Material and methods hPDL-MSCs and CD4+ T lymphocytes were co-cultured indirectly and directly with inserts (paracrine interaction only) or directly without inserts (paracrine and direct cell-to-cell contact interaction). They were stimulated with TNF-α or IL-1β in the absence/presence of 1,25(OH)2D3. After five days of co-cultivation, the CD4+ T lymphocyte proliferation, viability, and cytokine secretion were analyzed. Additionally, the gene expression of soluble and membrane-bound immunomediators was determined in hPDL-MSCs. Results In the indirect and direct co-culture model with inserts, 1,25(OH)2D3 decreased CD4+ T lymphocyte proliferation and viability. The direct co-culture model without inserts caused the opposite effect. 1,25(OH)2D3 mainly decreased the CD4+ T lymphocyte-associated secretion of cytokines via hPDL-MSCs. The degree of these inhibitions varied between the different co-culture setups. 1,25(OH)2D3 predominantly decreased the expression of the soluble and membrane-bound immunomediators in hPDL-MSCs to a different extent, depending on the co-culture models. The degree of all these effects depended on the absence and presence of exogenous TNF-α and IL-1β. Conclusion These data assume that 1,25(OH)2D3 differently affects CD4+ T lymphocytes via the paracrine and direct cell-to-cell contact mechanisms of hPDL-MSCs, showing anti- or pro-inflammatory effects depending on the co-culture model type. The local cytokine microenvironment seems to be involved in fine-tuning these effects. Future studies should consider this double-edged observation by executing different co-culture models in parallel.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus and inflammatory bowel disease are chronic conditions with significant overlap in their pathophysiology, primarily driven by chronic inflammation. Both diseases are characterized by an aberrant immune response and disrupted homeostasis in various tissues. However, it remains unclear which disease develops first, and which one contributes to the other. Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of inflammatory bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease may increase the risk of developing diabetes. This review focuses on comprehensively discussing the factors commonly contributing to the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and inflammatory bowel disease to draw a relationship between them and the possibility of targeting common factors to attenuate the incidence of one if the other is present. A key player in the intersection of diabetes mellitus and inflammatory bowel disease is the NLRP3 inflammasome, which regulates the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines leading to prolonged inflammation and tissue damage. Additionally, toll-like receptors via sensing microbial components contribute to diabetes mellitus and inflammatory bowel disease by initiating inflammatory responses. Gut dysbiosis, a common link in both diseases, further intensifies inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Alterations in gut microbiota composition affect intestinal permeability and immune modulation, perpetuating a vicious cycle of inflammation and disease progression by changing protein expression. The overlap in the underlying inflammatory mechanisms has led to the potential of targeting mediators of chronic inflammation using anti-inflammatory drugs and biologics that benefit both conditions or attenuate the incidence of one in the presence of the other.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to assess vitamin D deficiency in a cohort of healthy young adults using the novel inflammatory parameters neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (MHR), and uric acid-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (UHR). Subjects and methods The study included 1,190 participants, with demographic and laboratory data retrieved retrospectively from our institution's database. The inclusion criteria were ages 22-35 years; absence of acute, subacute, or chronic diseases; no regular medication use; and laboratory values within specified reference ranges. The exclusion criteria were pregnancy, diagnosis of malignancy, and laboratory measurements indicating infection. Participants were categorized into four groups based on vitamin D levels for comparative analysis of study parameters. Correlation analyses were conducted between these parameters and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, followed by receiver-operating characteristic analyses to determine the parameters' sensitivity and specificity in detecting vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, regression analyses were performed to identify potential risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. Results Subjects in Groups A1 and A2 exhibited higher MHR and UHR than those in Groups A3 and A4 (p < 0.001). Both MHR and UHR correlated negatively with vitamin D levels (r = -0.377 and r = -0.363, respectively; p < 0.001). The area under the curve for MHR was 0.766 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.739-0.794), with a 79% sensitivity and 61% specificity for identification of vitamin D deficiency. Increased MHR and UHR were independent risk factors for vitamin D deficiency (β = 0.219, odds ratio 1.244 95% CI 1.178-1.315, and β = 2.202, odds ratio 1.224, 95% CI 1.150-1.303). Conclusions Both MHR and UHR can be useful in predicting vitamin D deficiency in healthy young adults and may serve as valuable screening tools.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic risk factors increase the chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Most CVD risk factors are influenced by total and regional obesity. A higher risk of developing CVD may be linked to vitamin D deficiency, which is more prevalent in the older population. With the goal of evaluating the association between vitamin D and cardiometabolic risk factors and total and regional obesity in older adults, this research included 25 (OH) vitamin D3 concentrations and biochemical markers associated with cardiometabolic diseases, as well as total and regional adiposity, which was measured by DXA. A total of 1991 older participants in the PoCOsteo study were included. Overall, 38.5% of participants had vitamin D deficiency. After adjusting for confounders, the results of multiple linear and logistic regression suggested an inverse association between vitamin D and body mass index (P = 0.04), waist circumference (P = 0.001), total fat (P = 0.02), android fat (P = 0.001), visceral fat (P < 0.001), subcutaneous fat (P = 0.01), trunk fat (P = 0.006), arm fat (P = 0.03), high systolic blood pressure (P = 0.004), high total cholesterol (P < 0.001), high LDL-cholesterol (P < 0.001), high serum triglycerides (P = 0.001), and high fasting glucose (P < 0.001). Additionally, higher vitamin D concentrations decreased the risk of dyslipidemia by 2%. Our results showed a significant association between serum vitamin D and a number of cardiometabolic risk factors, including total and regional obesity.

Abstract
The pandemic has brought attention to the importance of a healthy immune system in preventing infectious diseases. In this in-depth review, the process by which nutritional interventions and fundamental nutrients affect immune function has been discussed with the goal of enhancing the body's natural defenses against viral infections. We explored the complex interplay between diet and immunology, highlighting the essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive substances that are crucial for enhancing immune response. We also investigated the effect of dietary patterns and supplementation methods on immune function. We assessed the effectiveness and potential mechanisms of action of various nutritional therapies in modifying immune responses through a thorough examination of scientific literature. Additionally, we go through the significance of individualized nutrition and highlight possible factors to consider for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with chronic conditions. This review attempts to provide a thorough understanding of the role of diet in boosting immunity by synthesizing available research. It also offers insights into practical methods for enhancing the immune function during the current epidemic and in the future.

Abstract
Previous studies found seasonal variations in the incidence of retinal vascular occlusion (RVO), with more occurrence in winter. There is increasing evidence linking vitamin D deficiency and RVO. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between vitamin D levels and RVO. From inception to February 2024, MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were comprehensively searched. Observational studies comparing 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels between adult patients with RVO and non-RVO controls were included. We calculated pooled mean difference (MD) and pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) of our data using a random-effects model and generic inverse variance method. Five studies involving 528 patients (228 patients with RVO and 300 controls were included in the meta-analysis. 25(OH)D was significantly lower in patients with RVO (pooled MD of -9.65 (95%CI -13.72 to -5.59, I2 = 92.2%). Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25(OH)D < 20) was significantly associated with RVO with the pooled OR of 14.52 (95%CI 1.72 to 122.59, I2 = 90.5). There was no difference in 25(OH)D levels between patients with central RVO and branched RVO (pooled MD of -0.94 (95%CI -3.91 to 2.03, I2 = 59.1%). In conclusion, our meta-analysis demonstrates that serum vitamin D levels were lower in patients with RVO than non-RVO controls. Clinicians could consider screening for vitamin D deficiency in patients with RVO. Further studies are warranted to determine the correlation between vitamin D levels and disease severity and the role of vitamin D supplements in these populations.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disorder that causes disability and paralysis, especially among young adults. Although interactions of several factors, such as viral infections, autoimmunity, genetic and environmental factors, performance a role in the beginning and progression of the disease, the exact cause of MS is unknown to date. Different immune cells such as Th1 and Th17 play an impressive role in the immunopathogenesis of MS, while, regulatory cells such as Th2 and Treg diminish the severity of the illness. Sex hormones have a vital role in many autoimmune disorders, including multiple sclerosis. Testosterone, estrogen and progesterone have various roles in the progress of MS, which higher prevalence of disease in women and more severe in men reveals the importance of sex hormones' role in this disease. Vitamin D after chemical changes in the body, as an active hormone called calcitriol, plays an important role in regulating immune responses and improves MS by modulating the immune system. The optimum level of calcium in the body with vitamin D modulates immune responses and calcium as an essential ion in the body plays a key role in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. The interaction between vitamin D and sex hormones has protective and therapeutic effects against MS and functional synergy between estrogen and calcitriol occurs in disease recovery. Moreover, vitamin D and calcium interact with each other to regulate the immune system and shift them to anti-inflammatory responses.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D deficiency and novel biomarkers of atherogenic dyslipidemia among young adults. METHOD A total of 976 young adults were recruited between 2011 and 2019. Their serum 25(OH)D levels were measured, and lipid profile markers, including low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), low-density lipoprotein triglyceride (LDL-TG), and small-dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C), were assessed as novel biomarkers of atherogenic dyslipidemia. Multivariable linear regression was used to analyze the association between vitamin D levels and lipid profile markers. Odds ratios were calculated to assess the risk of atherogenic dyslipidemia in individuals with serum 25(OH)D levels below 30 ng/mL compared to those with levels above 30 ng/mL. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to explore potential mediation pathways. RESULTS The study found a significant association between vitamin D levels and lower levels of LDL-C, LDL-TG, sdLDL-C, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), triglycerides, and total cholesterol. Individuals with serum 25(OH)D levels below 30 ng/mL exhibited significantly higher odds ratios for developing atherogenic dyslipidemia in a dose-response pattern compared to those with vitamin D levels above 30 ng/mL. Notably, structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis revealed that vitamin D did not affect atherogenic lipid markers through the mediation of insulin resistance markers or high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence of an association between vitamin D deficiency and atherogenic dyslipidemia in young adults. It further highlights that individuals with serum 25(OH)D levels below 30 ng/mL are at a significantly higher risk of developing atherogenic dyslipidemia in a dose-response manner compared to those with higher vitamin D levels. These findings underscore the potential role of vitamin D in dyslipidemia management and emphasize the importance of maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels for cardiovascular health in young adults.

Abstract
Over the past few years, there has been a notable increment in scientific literature aimed at unraveling the genetic foundations of vitamin D signaling and its implications for susceptibility to autoimmunity, however, most of them address isolated diseases. Here, we conducted a systematic review of genetic variants related to vitamin D and autoimmune diseases and we discussed the current landscape of susceptibility and outcomes. Of 65 studies analyzed, most variants cited are in vitamin D binding protein (VDBP; rs2282679 GC gene), 25-hydroxylase (rs10751657 CYP2R1), 1α-hydroxylase (rs10877012, CYP27B1) and the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily [FokI (rs2228570), BsmI (rs1544410), ApaI (rs7975232), and TaqI (rs731236) in VDR gene]. Therefore, our findings confirmed the associations of several genetic variants of vitamin D signaling with a broad spectrum of autoimmune diseases/traits. In addition, given the low number of papers found with functional analysis, further studies to elucidate the real effect that the variants exert on Vitamin D signaling are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies investigating the effect of oral supplementation of paricalcitol on reactive protein levels in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients reported inconsistent findings. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we have analyzed and interpreted the results obtained from previous randomized clinical trials on the effect of paricalcitol on C-reactive protein in CKD patients in the literature. METHODS MEDLINE, SciVerse Scopus, and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science databases were searched until January 2023 and related articles were obtained through a careful screening process allowing extraction of required data from selected articles. The effect size was calculated using a random effect model and weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity among studies was evaluated using Cochran's Q test and I2. RESULTS Amongst the 182 articles obtained from the initial search, 4 studies (6 arms) were finally included in the meta-analysis. Pooled analysis shows that C-reactive protein levels significantly decrease after oral supplementation with paricalcitol (WMD: -2.55 mg/L, 95% CI (-4.99 to -0.11; P = 0.04). The studies used in this meta-analysis showed significant heterogeneity (I2 = 66.3% and P = 0.01). CONCLUSION Oral paricalcitol supplementation in CKD patients can significantly reduce C-reactive protein levels, which may prevent CKD progression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vitamin D (a prohormone) is an important micronutrient required by the body for skeletal homeostasis and a range of non-skeletal actions. Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, regulates a variety of cellular and metabolic processes through both genomic and nongenomic pathways. Often prescribed for treating rickets and osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate various other medical conditions. SIGNIFICANCE, METHODS, AND RESULTS Despite its multifunctional uses, the sensitivity of vitamin D makes formulating an efficient drug delivery system a challenging task, which is further complicated by its poor aqueous solubility. Enhancing the oral absorption of vitamin D is vital in utilizing its full efficacy. Recent developments in encapsulation and nanotechnology have shown promising results in overcoming these constraints. CONCLUSION This review thus offers an insight to adequately comprehend the mechanistic pharmacology of vitamin D, its pathophysiological role, and justification of its medical indications, along with the benefits of utilizing nanotechnology for vitamin D delivery.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and poor outcomes, but supplementation does not improve prognosis. VDD has been implicated in and may promote greater risk through inflammation and impaired progenitor cell function. Objectives The authors examined VDD, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), circulating progenitor cell (CPC) counts, and outcomes in patients with CHD. They hypothesized that the higher risk with VDD is mediated by inflammation and impaired regenerative capacity. Methods A total of 5,452 individuals with CHD in the Emory Cardiovascular Biobank had measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, subsets of whom had hsCRP measurements and CPCs estimated as CD34-expressing mononuclear cell counts. Findings were validated in an independent cohort. 25-hydroxyvitamin D <20 ng/mL was considered VDD. Cox and Fine-Gray models determined associations between marker levels and: 1) all-cause mortality; 2) cardiovascular mortality; and 3) major adverse cardiovascular events, a composite of adverse CHD outcomes. Results VDD (43.6% of individuals) was associated with higher adjusted cardiovascular mortality (HR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.09-2.28). There were significant interactions between VDD and hsCRP and CPC counts in predicting cardiovascular mortality. Individuals with both VDD and elevated hsCRP had the greatest risk (HR: 2.82, 95% CI: 2.16-3.67). Only individuals with both VDD and low CPC counts were at high risk (HR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.46-3.46). These findings were reproduced in the validation cohort. Conclusions VDD predicts adverse outcomes in CHD. Those with VDD, inflammation and/or diminished regenerative capacity are at a significantly greater risk of cardiovascular mortality. Whether targeted supplementation in these high-risk groups improves risk warrants further study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Solid-organ transplant recipients have high rates of invasive fungal infections. Candida species are the most commonly isolated fungi. Our aim was to identify risk factors, clinical presentations, and outcomes of candidemia in solid-organ transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated adult (≥18 years old) transplant recipients seen from May 2011 to December 2022 at Baskent University Ankara Hospital. From medical records, we retrospectively reviewed age, sex, transplant type, candidemia agent, risk factors, concomitant infections, and mortality of patients with Candida detected in blood culture. We used SPSS statistics software (version 25) to analyze data. RESULTS There were 1080 organ transplants performed during the study period (717 kidney, 279 liver, 84 heart). There were 855 who were ≥18 years (655 kidney, 127 liver, 73 heart), of whom candidemia was detected in 26 (16 male; 11 kidney, 11 liver, 4 heart) with a median age of 47.5 years. The most common agents were Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. The most common chronic diseases were hypertension, cirrhosis, and cardiomyopathy. Eighteen patients had a concomitant focus of infection. Ten patients had pneumonia accompanying candidemia. The 30-day mortality rate was as high as 53.8%. The mean duration of candidemia after transplant was 23 months. Catheter-related candidemia was observed in 65% of patients. The 30-day mortality was found to be significantly higher in patients followed in the intensive care unit (P = .014), receiving total parenteral nutrition (P = .001), using broad-spectrum antibiotics (P = .001), and having pneumonia (P = .042) accompanying candidemia. CONCLUSIONS For adult solid-organ transplant recipients with candidemia, careful monitoring is essential for successful management of total parenteral nutrition, central catheter, use of broadspectrum antibiotics, and invasive interventions.

Abstract
This comprehensive review explores the intricate relationship between nutrition and ocular health, focusing on the crucial roles of essential nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Zinc, and Folate (Vitamin B9) in maintaining eye well-being. Nutrient deficiencies have significant consequences, leading to various eye-related issues, from night blindness to age-related conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. It is imperative to address these deficiencies, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded diet with the necessary nutrients. When necessary, supplementation and regular eye examinations are vital components for effectively monitoring ocular health. Public health campaigns and educational initiatives also play a key role in raising awareness about the profound impact of nutrition on eye health. Future research should explore personalized nutrition plans, nutrigenomics, longitudinal studies, and targeted nutritional interventions. Such investigations will not only enhance our understanding of this crucial connection but also have the potential to reduce the global burden of eye diseases.

Abstract
Platelet hyperactivity is one of the key factors implicated in the development and progression of diabetic vascular complications. Activated platelets mediate leukocyte recruitment that further enhances inflammatory responses in vascular wall ultimately resulting in atherosclerotic complications. Since vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent in diabetics, we aimed to evaluate the effect of three dosage forms of vitamin D supplementation on lipid profile, NF-κB, platelet aggregation, and platelet calcium content in type 2 diabetic patients. Type 2 diabetic patients were randomized to receive daily (4000 IU/day) or weekly (50 000 IU/week) oral vitamin D3 for 3 months. Another group received a single parenteral dose (300 000 IU) of vitamin D3, whereas the control group received their antidiabetic drug(s) alone. Serum 25(OH)D, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, NF-κB, and platelet aggregation were measured at the beginning and 3 months after vitamin D supplementation. Platelet calcium content was evaluated by measuring the fluorescence intensity of Rhod-2-stained platelets by confocal fluorescence microscopy. Results showed that serum 25(OH)D3 levels significantly increased in all vitamin D3-treated groups. However, the mean level for parenteral treated group was significantly lower than oral-treated groups. Oral and parenteral treatment were also able to decrease NF-κB level, platelet aggregation, and platelet calcium content. However, both oral doses of vitamin D3 were superior to the single parenteral dose. In conclusion, restoring normal levels of vitamin D is an important determinant to maintain normal platelet function and reduce inflammation. Nevertheless, further long-term studies are still needed.

Abstract
The role of vitamin D in maintaining gum well-being is crucial. However, scientific research reported that the connotations of cholecalciferol and periodontal health have been divested in the present literature. However, there is enormous heterogeneity in the data available. The current review aims to systematically review and appraise the available literature investigating the role of vitamin D in maintaining periodontal health. Studies included randomized controlled trials and clinical trials following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and cohort studies reporting associations between vitamin D and oral health in systemically healthy patients. Databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase, and other sources, including hand search, were searched until May 2023 using together-equipped search sequences. Altogether, scientific articles that conform to the inclusion principles underwent a thorough eminence evaluation. All papers meeting inclusion criteria were subject to quality assessment, and the method used to assess the risk of bias was the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The search identified 1883 papers, among which 1435 were excluded after title evaluation. After abstract and title screening, 455 were excluded, and six full texts were assessed. After full-text evaluation, two articles were excluded, and only four were included. The data shows vitamin D's association with oral health maintenance. Along with its action on bone metabolism, it has extended function, which provides for its action as an anti-inflammatory agent and production of anti-microbial peptides, which help maintain oral health. Although the literature available is immense, there is enormous heterogenicity in the papers conducted to appraise the association between vitamin D and oral health. This systematic review has filtered all the data to review a few essential aspects of the role of vitamin D in maintaining oral physiology. Vitamin D has a linear relationship with periodontal health; however, the evidence is insufficient, and further studies must be done.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D Deficiency is recognized as a pandemic, which is associated with high mortality. An inadequate level of vitamin D is associated with autoimmune diseases, hypertension, and cancer. The study was aimed to assess the pharmacological effects of chronic vitamin D3 supplementation on the manipulation diet regiment of deprived cholecalciferol (vitamin D3 deficient diet, VDD) rats. METHODS Memory performance (Y-maze task), muscular function (muscle grip strength), and pain score (pressure application measurement meter) were measured. Functional biomarkers were measured using ELISA method in different matrix viz. in serum (parathyroid hormone; PTH, calcitonin, thyroxine, and C-reactive protein; CRP, 25-OH Vit D3), and in CSF (klotho and β-endorphin). 25-OH Vit D3 was also estimated in liver and kidney homogenate using ELISA. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) was measured spectrophotometrically in liver and adipose tissue. RESULTS VDD-induced rats showed a decrease in number of entries and time spent in the novel arm and spontaneous alternations in the Y-maze task. Significant improvements of neuromuscular function and pain score after addition of vitamin D3. In comparison to the VDD group, VDR expression (liver) and active metabolites of vitamin D3 (25-OH vit.D3) in serum were significantly higher by 48.23% and 280%, respectively. The PTH and CRP levels were significantly reduced by 32.5% and 35.27%, respectively, whereas calcitonin was increased by 36.67% compared with the VDD group. Klotho and β-endorphin expressions in cerebrospinal fluid were significantly elevated by 19.67% and 133.59%, respectively, compared to VDD group. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the results indicate that supplementation of cholecalciferol significantly improved spatial memory impairment, VDR expression, and may provide an opportunity to manage vitamin D deficiencies.

Abstract
It is unknown whether the well-known association between vitamin D deficiency and mortality could be explained by the immune system modulating effects of vitamin D, which may protect from a systemic inflammatory response (SIR) to adverse health conditions. This study aims to investigate the interrelationships of vitamin D deficiency, biomarkers of SIR, and mortality. We used multivariate logistic regression with adjustment for 51 covariates to assess the associations of vitamin D deficiency with disadvantageous levels of nine biomarkers of SIR in the UK Biobank cohort. Furthermore, we tested with Cox regression and mediation analysis whether biomarkers of SIR and vitamin D deficiency were independently associated with mortality. We included 397,737 participants aged 37-73 years. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with disadvantageous levels of all blood cell count-based biomarkers, but not with C-reactive protein (CRP)-based biomarkers after adjustment for body weight. Vitamin D deficiency and all biomarkers of SIR were significantly associated with all-cause mortality and mortality from cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory disease. The strength of these associations was unaltered if vitamin D deficiency and biomarkers of SIR were put in the same model. This finding was further supported by the mediation analyses. This study showed that vitamin D deficiency is associated with disadvantageous levels of blood cell count-based but not CRP-based biomarkers of SIR. Vitamin D deficiency and systemic inflammation were independently and strongly associated with mortality. The potential of clinical interventions against both vitamin D deficiency and underlying causes of systemic inflammation should be explored.

Abstract
Vitamin D (VD) exerts a wide variety of biological actions in addition to its well-known roles in calcium homeostasis. Nutritional VD deficiency induces rachitic abnormalities in growing children and osteomalacia in adults, and it has been proposed to underlie the onset and development of multiple non-communicable chronic diseases. Therefore, the administration of VD or synthetic VD analogues represents a promising therapeutic strategy; indeed, VD and a VD agonist have shown clinical promise in mitigating osteoporosis and symptoms of insufficient calcium intake. However, even though high doses of VD analogues have shown pre-clinical efficacy against several diseases, including cancers, they have not yet had wide-spread clinical success. This difference may be due to limitation of clinical doses in light of the inherent calcemic action of VD. An approach to overcome this problem involves the development of VD analogues with lower calcemic activity, which could be administered in high doses to attenuate the onset and progress of disease. In a similar strategy, selective estrogen receptor modulators have had success as anti-osteoporosis drugs, and they have shown benefit for other estrogen target organs by serving as partial antagonists or agonists of estrogen receptor α. It is thus conceivable to generate synthetic partial antagonists or agonists for the VD receptor (VDR) that would exert beneficial effects on bone and other VD target organs. In this review, we discuss the molecular basis of the development of such synthetic VDR ligands from the viewpoint of roles of VDR in gene regulation.

Abstract
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal disorder. In comparison to diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration, RVO is usually an unexpected event that carries a greater psychological impact. There is strong evidence to suggest that cardiovascular diseases are the most common risk factors in this pathology and it has long been known that a higher consumption of fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables has a protective effect against these types of conditions. In the last several years, interest in plant-based diets has grown in both the general population and in the scientific community, to the point to which it has become one of the main dietary patterns adopted in Western countries. The aim of this review is to investigate the potential impact of macro- and micronutrients on retinal vein occlusion.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency at birth, followed by prolonged insufficiency in early life may predispose bovine calves to infection and disease. However, the effects of vitamin D levels on innate immunity are unclear due to the lack of long-term supplementation trials in vivo and reliable approaches for reproducibly assessing immune function. Here, a standardized whole blood immunophenotyping assay was used to compare innate immune responses to infection relevant ligands (LPS, Pam3CSK4 and R848) between Holstein-Friesian calves supplemented with vitamin D (n = 12) from birth until 7 months of age and control calves (n = 10) raised on an industry standard diet. Transcriptomic analysis in unstimulated whole blood cells revealed increased expression of type I interferons and chemokines in vitamin D supplemented calves, while IL-1 and inflammasome gene expression was decreased. In response to stimulation with the bacterial ligand LPS, supplemented calves had significantly increased expression of CASP1, CX3CR1, CAT, whereas STAT1 was decreased. Stimulation with the bacterial ligand Pam3CSK4 revealed increased expression of IL1A, IL1B and CAT genes; and decreased C5AR1 expression. In response to the viral ligand R848, STAT1 and S100A8 expression was significantly decreased. An increased IL-1 and inflammasome gene expression signature in vitamin D supplemented calves in response to LPS and Pam3CSK4 was also found, with ELISA confirming increased IL-1β protein production. In contrast, a decreased chemokine gene expression signature was found in response to R848 in supplemented animals, with decreased IL-8 protein expression exhibited in response to all PAMPs also found. These results demonstrated expression of several cytokine, chemokine and inflammasome genes were impacted by vitamin D supplementation in the first 7 months of life, with IL-8 expression particularly responsive to vitamin D. Overall, vitamin D supplementation induced differential innate immune responses of blood immune cells that could have important implications for disease susceptibility in cattle.

Abstract
This review explores the role of vitamin D in atherosclerosis and its impact on cardiovascular events. Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by plaque accumulation in arterial walls, is a major contributor to cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Vitamin D has emerged as a multifunctional hormone with pleiotropic effects, extending beyond its traditional role in calcium and bone metabolism. Through its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidative properties, vitamin D may influence the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The association between vitamin D deficiency and atherosclerosis has been extensively studied. Observational studies consistently report an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels, atherosclerotic risk factors, and markers of subclinical atherosclerosis. Mechanistically, vitamin D exerts anti-inflammatory effects, modulates immune responses, improves endothelial function, and influences lipid metabolism, all of which play critical roles in atherosclerosis development and plaque stability. Furthermore, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Vitamin D influences thrombosis, platelet aggregation, arterial stiffness, blood pressure regulation, and overall vascular health, collectively contributing to cardiovascular event risk. However, the clinical implications of vitamin D for managing atherosclerosis and reducing cardiovascular event risk are still being explored. Randomized controlled trials investigating the cardiovascular benefits of vitamin D supplementation have yielded mixed results, necessitating further research to determine optimal dosages, durations, and patient populations. The review also addresses public health recommendations and future directions. Examining current guidelines, identifying research gaps, and considering public health implications are crucial for translating scientific knowledge into effective interventions. Raising awareness, implementing population-level strategies, and integrating vitamin D assessment into routine clinical practice are key to improving cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction Vitamin D deficiency increases gingivitis risk. Studies show that higher vitamin D levels reduce inflammation. Materials and Methods College conducted a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial on 451 people's vitamin D and gingival health at baseline. For three months, participants were given a placebo (group A), 1000 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 per day (group B), 500 IU per day (group C), or 2000 IU per day (group A). Gingival scores were recorded for three months to assess the anti-inflammatory effect (the first, second, and third). Vitamin D levels also affected gingivitis. Results Vitamin D dose-dependently reduces gingivitis inflammation. Vitamin D administration negatively correlated with gingival index score. Anti-inflammatory vitamin D levels are 32-37 ng/ml. Conclusion Vitamin D supplementation can reduce gingivitis severity. The optimal blood vitamin D level is 30-35 ng/ml.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Based on the results of existing observational studies, it can be found that the association between serum vitamin D levels and the risk of Sjogren's syndrome (SS) in humans is still controversial. Based on this situation, this study aimed to assess the causal relationship between serum vitamin D levels and SS by using the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. METHODS In this study, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics on serum vitamin D levels [sample size = 417,580 (UK Biobank)] and SS [sample size = 416,757 (cases = 2495, controls = 414,262) (FinnGen)] were used. The bi-directional MR analysis was then used to assess possible causal relationships. The major analysis method of MR was performed using inverse-variance weighted (IVW), supplemented by MR-Egger and the weighted median approaches. In addition, sensitivity analyses were used to ensure the stability of the results, including Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO, MR-Egger intercept test, and the leave-one-out test. RESULTS The MR suggested that no significant causal effects of serum 25(OH)D levels on SS risks were observed [odds ratio (OR) = 0.9824; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.7130 to 1.3538; P = 0.9137]. Similarly, no evidence supported the causal effects of SS on serum vitamin D levels (β: 0.0076, 95% CI: - 0.0031 to 0.0183; P = 0.1640). CONCLUSION This study found no obvious evidence that serum vitamin D level is causally associated with SS risks or vice versa. We call for larger sample size studies to further unravel the potential causal relationship and the exact mechanism.

Abstract
The etiologies of short bowel syndrome (SBS) can be stratified into congenital or acquired etiologies, with the latter being more prevalent. Small intestinal surgical resection is the most common acquired etiology, employed in settings including mesenteric ischemia, intestinal injury, radiation enteritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) complicated by internal fistulas. We describe a case of a 55-year-old Caucasian male with a history of idiopathic superior mesenteric artery (SMA) ischemia post-SMA placement complicated by recurrent small bowel obstructions. He presented with SMA stent occlusion and infarction, leaving him with 75 cm of post-duodenal small bowel after emergent surgical resection. He was trialed on enteral nutrition and progressed to parenteral nutrition (PN) after failure to thrive. With intensive counseling, his compliance improved, and he was able to briefly maintain adequate nutrition status with supplemental total parenteral nutrition. After a period of being lost to follow-up, he succumbed to complications from untreated SBS. This case highlights the need for intensive nutritional support for patients with short bowel syndrome and awareness of clinical complications.

Abstract
A growing body of evidence on the importance of vitamin D in immune modulation has increased the interest in its possible impact on the course of rheumatological diseases. The scope of our study is to assess if the presence of different statuses of vitamin D could interfere in the clinical subsets, in methotrexate monotherapy discontinuation, and biological drug (b-DMARDs) survival in psoriatic arthritis patients (PsA). We conducted a retrospective study on PsA patients and split them into three groups based on their vitamin D status: the group with 25(OH)D ≤ 20 ng/mL, the group with levels of 25(OH)D between 20 and 30 ng/mL, and the group with serum levels of 25(OH)D ≥ 30 ng/mL. All patients were required to fulfill the CASPAR criteria for psoriatic arthritis and to have the evaluation of vitamin D serum levels at baseline visit and at clinical follow-up visits. The exclusion criteria were ages less than 18 years old, the presence of HLA B27, and satisfaction of rheumatoid arthritis classification criteria (during the study time). Statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Furthermore, 570 patients with PsA were screened and 233 were recruited. A level of 25(OH)D ≤ 20 ng/mL was present in 39% of patients; levels of 25(OH)D between 20 and 30 ng/mL presented in 25% of patients; 65% of patients with sacroiliitis presented 25 (OH)D ≤ 20 ng/mL. Methotrexate monotherapy discontinuation for failure was higher in the group with 25 (OH)D ≤ 20 ng/mL (survival time: 92 ± 10.3 weeks vs. 141.9 ± 24.1 weeks vs. 160.1 ± 23.6 weeks; p = 0.02) with higher discontinuation risk (HR = 2.168, 95% CI 1.334, 3.522; p = 0.002) than those with 25(OH)D between 20 and 30 ng/mL and those with 25(OH)D ≥ 30 ng/mL. Significantly shorter survival of first b-DMARDs was assessed in the group with 25 (OH)D ≤ 20 ng/mL versus the other groups (133.6 ± 11 weeks vs. 204.8 ± 35.8 weeks vs. 298.9 ± 35.4; p = 0.028) (discontinuation risk 2.129, 95% CI 1.186, 3.821; p = 0.011). This study highlights significant differences in clinical presentation, in particular sacroiliac involvement and on drug survival (methotrexate and b-DMARDs) in PsA patients with vitamin D deficiency. Further prospective studies, including a larger sample of patients, are needed to validate these data and to assess if the supplementation of vitamin D could improve the b-DMARDs response in PsA patients.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common medical conditions, with approximately one billion people having low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is associated with a pleiotropic effect (immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and antiviral), which can be essential for a better immune response. The aim of this research was to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency in hospitalized patients focusing on demographic parameters as well as assessing the possibility of its associations with different comorbidities. Of 11,182 Romanian patients evaluated in the study over 2 years, 28.83% had vitamin D deficiency, 32.11% insufficiency and 39.05% had optimal vitamin D levels. The vitamin D deficiency was associated with cardiovascular disorders, malignancies, dysmetabolic disorders and SARS-CoV2 infection, older age and the male sex. Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent and showed pathology association, while insufficiency of vitamin D (20-30 ng/mL) had lower statistical relevance and represents a grey zone in vitamin D status. Guidelines and recommendations are necessary for homogeneity of the monitoring and management of inadequately vitamin D status in the risk categories.

Abstract
Introduction Human periodontal ligament-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hPDL-MSCs) exhibit a tight bi-directional interaction with CD4+ T lymphocytes. The hPDL-MSCs' immunomodulatory abilities are drastically enhanced by pro-inflammatory cytokines via boosting the expression of various immunomediators. 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3), the major metabolite of vitamin D3 in the blood, affects both hPDL-MSCs and CD4+ T lymphocytes, but its influence on their interaction is unknown. Methods Therefore, primary hPDL-MSCs were stimulated in vitro with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α a or interleukin (IL)-1β in the absence and presence of 25(OH)D3 followed by an indirect co-culture with phytohemagglutinin-activated CD4+ T lymphocytes. The CD4+ T lymphocyte proliferation, viability, and cytokine secretion were analyzed. Additionally, the expression of various immunomediators in hPDL-MSCs was investigated, and their implication was verified by using pharmacological inhibitors. Results 25(OH)D3 significantly counteracted the suppressive effects of IL-1β-treated hPDL-MSCs on CD4+ T lymphocyte proliferation, whereas no effects were observed in the presence of TNF-α. Additionally, 25(OH)D3 significantly increased the percentage of viable CD4+ T lymphocytes via TNF-α- or IL-1β-treated hPDL-MSCs. It also caused a significant decrease in interferon-γ, IL-17A, and transforming growth factor-β productions, which were triggered by TNF-α-treated hPDL-MSCs. 25(OH)D3 significantly decreased the production of various immunomediators in hPDL-MSCs. Inhibition of two of them, prostaglandin E2 and indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase-1, partially abolished some of the hPDL-MSCs-mediated effects of 25(OH)D3 on CD4+ T lymphocytes. Conclusion These data indicate that 25(OH)D3 influences the immunomodulatory activities of hPDL-MSCs. This modulatory potential seems to have high plasticity depending on the local cytokine conditions and may be involved in regulating periodontal tissue inflammatory processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phase angle (PhA) has been used as mortality prognostic, but there are no studies about its possible use as a screening tool. Therefore, an assessment of the possible utility of PhA in clinical practice is required. The aim of this systematic review was to explore all recent available evidence of PhA, and its possible utility as a screening tool in clinical practice in subjects with chronic metabolic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS This systematic review was performed and written as stated in the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect and SciElo. In order to be considered eligible, within the entire search, only articles involving PhA and their utility in metabolic diseases were included. RESULTS PhA was associated with hyperuricemia and vitamin D deficiency in obese subjects, and decreased cardiovascular risk and malnutrition in hospitalized patients. CONCLUSION PhA may be a potential screening tool in clinical practice to evaluate different biomarkers, cardiovascular risk, and nutritional diagnosis in metabolic diseases in adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is unclear whether 25(OH)D concentrations in children and female adults may be influenced by inflammation and thus require adjustment when estimating the population prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. OBJECTIVES We examined correlations between inflammation biomarkers, CRP or alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), and serum 25(OH)D concentrations among preschool children (PSC; 6-59 mo) and nonpregnant females of reproductive age (FRA; 15-49 y). METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data from 6 nationally representative nutrition surveys (Afghanistan, Cambodia, Pakistan, UK, USA, and Vietnam) conducted among PSC (n = 9880) and FRA (n = 14,749) from the Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia project. Rank correlations between CRP or AGP and 25(OH)D concentrations were examined while taking into account complex survey design effects. RESULTS Among both PSC and FRA, correlations between inflammation and vitamin D biomarkers were weak and inconsistent across surveys. For PSC, correlation coefficients between CRP and 25(OH)D concentrations ranged from -0.04 to 0.08, and correlations between AGP and 25(OH)D ranged from 0.01 to 0.05. Correlation coefficients between CRP and 25(OH)D for FRA ranged from -0.11 to 0.14, and correlations between AGP and 25(OH)D concentrations ranged from -0.05 to 0.01. CONCLUSIONS Based on the weak and inconsistent correlations between CRP or AGP and 25(OH)D, there is no rationale to adjust for these inflammation biomarkers when estimating population prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in PSC or FRA.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to assess the combined role of vitamin D and albumin serum levels as predictors of COVID-19 disease progression. METHODS We conducted a prospective observational study on adult patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia (March-September 2020). Vitamin D and albumin serum levels were measured on admission. These variables were categorized in albumin < 3.5 or ≥ 3.5 g/dL and vitamin D < 30 ng/mL or ≥ 30 ng/mL. We excluded patients with known bone diseases, renal failure, hypercalcemia and/or treated with antiepileptic drugs and steroids, and patients who received previous vitamin D supplementation. A composite outcome including any ventilatory support, PaO2/FiO2 ratio, and 60-day mortality was defined. RESULTS Sixty-nine patients were enrolled, of whom 50% received non-invasive (NIV) or invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), 10% died, whereas 89% and 66% presented low albumin and low vitamin D serum levels, respectively. No correlation between vitamin D and albumin levels was found. In multivariable logistic regression analyses adjusted for sex and age-corrected comorbidities, patients having albumin < 3.5 g/dL and vitamin D < 30 ng/mL showed a significant increased risk for all study outcomes, namely NIV/IMV (OR 3.815; 95% CI 1.122-12.966; p = 0.032), NIV/IMV or death (OR 3.173; 95% CI 1.002-10.043; p = 0.049) and PaO2/FIO2 ≤ 100 (OR 3.410; 95% CI 1.138-10.219; p = 0.029). CONCLUSION The measurement of both vitamin D and serum albumin levels on COVID-19 patients' admission, and their combined evaluation, provides a simple prognostic tool that could be employed to guide prompt clinical decisions.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic cell loss in the substantia nigra, and PD brains show neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The study evaluated the neuroprotective activity of 1α,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 (VD3), on the rotenone (ROT)-induced cytotoxicity in PC12 cells. The viability parameters were assessed by the MTT and flow cytometry, on cells treated or not with VD3 and/or ROT. Besides, ROS production, cell death, mitochondrial transmembrane potential, reduced GSH, superoxide accumulation, molecular docking (TH and Keap1-Nrf2), and TH, Nrf2, NF-kB, and VD3 receptor protein contents by western blot were evaluated. VD3 was shown to improve the viability of ROT-exposed cells. Cells exposed to ROT showed increased production of ROS and superoxide, which decreased after VD3. ROT decrease in the mitochondrial transmembrane potential was prevented, after VD3 treatment and, VD3 was shown to interact with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and Nrf2. While ROT decreased TH, Nrf2, and NF-kB expressions, these effects were reversed by VD3. In addition, VD3 also increased VD3 receptor protein contents and values went back to those of controls after ROT exposure. VD3 protects PC12 cells against ROT damage, by decreasing oxidative stress and improving mitochondrial function. One target seems to be the TH molecule and possibly an indirect Nrf2 activation could also justify its neuroprotective actions on this PC12 cell model of PD.

Association between Vitamin D Status and Secondary Infections in Patients with Severe COVID-19 Admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of a Tertiary-Level Hospital in Turkey. Abstract
There are several studies showing that the vitamin D status can determine risk of COVID-19 infections, severity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the association between vitamin D (25(OH)D) and secondary infections in the prognosis of COVID-19 patients has not been reported yet. The aim was to investigate whether the vitamin D status affects the rates of secondary infections in patients with severe COVID-19 hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary-level hospital in Turkey. The data of 194 patients with diagnosis of severe COVID-19 who were admitted to the ICU from March 2020 to June 2021 and older than 18 years were evaluated in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into two groups according to total serum 25(OH)D level as normal group (≥20 ng/mL) and low group (<20 ng/mL). The 25(OH)D level was low in 118 (60.8%) and normal in 76 (39.2%) patients. The mean age of the low group was significantly higher than that of the normal group (67.02 ± 14.47 vs. 61.70 ± 14.38; p = 0.013). The systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as the Glasgow coma scale score of the low group were significantly lower than that of the normal group (p = 0.004, 0.002 and 0.001, respectively). The intubation rate and APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) score of the low group was significantly higher than that of the normal group (p = 0.001). The platelets number and blood pH decreased, and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, procalcitonin, lactate, urea, creatinine and lactate dehydrogenase concentrations increased significantly in the low group (p < 0.05). The mortality rate was 79.7% in the low group and 22.4% in the normal group (p < 0.001). Microbiological growth was observed in 68.6% of the normal group and 52.6% of the normal group (p = 0.025). The number of cultures with resistant bacteria was significantly higher in the low group (25.9%) than that in the normal group (17.5%) (p = 0.035). The severe COVID-19 patients hospitalized with vitamin D deficiency may have increased risks of poor prognosis and mortality due to secondary infections in the ICU.

Abstract
Introduction Considerable evidence suggests that there are significant ethnic/racial differences in the experience of pain among individuals suffering from chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Additionally, low levels of vitamin D have been associated with pain severity. Further, vitamin D deficiency is more prevalent in Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) individuals compared to Non-Hispanic Whites (NHW). Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the associations among race, pain severity, and serum levels of vitamin D in a sample of patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP). Methods All study participants (n = 155) self-identified their race/ethnicity as either NHB or NHW. Blood samples were collected to assess circulating levels of serum 25- hydroxy vitamin D. Vitamin D levels were categorized as optimal (≥20 ng/mL), insufficient (12-19 ng/mL) or deficient (<12 ng/mL). Participants then self-reported their pain severity using the Brief Pain Inventory - Short Form. Results Results showed that a greater proportion of NHB versus NHW participants were categorized as Vitamin D deficient (χ 2 (2, N = 155) = 16.79, p < 0.001). An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that NHBs reported significantly greater pain severity relative to NHWs (F(1150) = 6.45) p = 0.012. Further, self-reported pain severity significantly differed according to Vitamin D clinical categories (F(2150) = 4.19, p = 0.013). Participants with deficient vitamin D reported significantly greater pain severity in comparison to participants with optimal vitamin D (F(1101) = 7.28, p = 0.008). Conclusion The findings suggest that Vitamin D deficiency may be linked to greater pain severity in a sample of individuals with cLBP, especially for those who identify as NHB.

Abstract
Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is a hallmark of obesity and vascular dysfunction. We sought to test the hypothesis that VD deficiency may contribute to obesity-related vascular dysfunction by inducing adipokine hypomethylation and augmented expression. To this end, we collected blood and adipose tissues (ATs) from a cohort of 77 obese participants who were classified as having mild, moderate, or severe VD deficiency. The body composition, vascular reactivity, cardiometabolic profiles, and DNA methylation of 94 inflammation-related adipokines were measured. Our results show that higher degrees of VD deficiency were associated with lower DNA methylation and induced the expression of inflammatory adipokines such as B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6), C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 8 (CXCL8), histone deacetylase 5 (HDAC5), interleukin 12A (IL12A), and nuclear factor κB (NFκB) in the ATs. They were also associated with higher BMI and total and visceral fat mass, impaired insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles, AT hypoxia, and higher concentrations of circulating inflammatory markers. Moderate and severe VD deficiency correlated with impaired vasoreactivity of the brachial artery and AT-isolated arterioles, reduced nitric oxide generation, and increased arterial stiffness. In a multivariate regression analysis, the VD deficiency level strongly predicted the adipokine methylation score, systemic inflammation, and microvascular dysfunction. In conclusion, our findings suggest that VD deficiency is a possible contributor to obesity-related adipokine hypomethylation, inflammation, and vascular dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the influence of vitamin D supplementation on immune function of healthy older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS Designed as a randomized controlled trial, 21 participants (55-85 years) completed the study during May-November 2018 in Coventry, England. The participants were randomized into vitamin D or the control group, stratified by age, gender and body mass index. The vitamin D group (n = 12) took vitamin D3 tablets of 1,000 IU/day for 12 weeks plus vitamin D education leaflet, while the control group (n = 9) were only provided with the leaflet. At baseline, 6 and 12 weeks, plasma 25(OH)D levels and immunological and metabolic parameters including phagocytic activity of granulocytes and monocytes, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 6, lymphocyte subsets and fasting blood glucose and lipid were measured. Dietary vitamin D intake was analyzed at baseline and week 12. Data were presented as mean ± SD. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA and independent t-test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS At baseline, 42.9% of the participants were vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D < 25 nmol/L), only 10% achieved a level of 25(OH)D > 50 nmol/L. Overweight/obese participants (n = 9) had significantly lower mean plasma 25(OH)D concentration (22.3 ± 8.7 nmol/L) than normal weight participants (48.1 ± 34.3 nmol/L) (P = 0.043). There was a significant increase in plasma 25(OH)D concentration in vitamin D group compared with that in control group (P = 0.002) during the intervention period. The plasma 25(OH)D concentration in vitamin D group was increased at 6 weeks (from 38.4 ± 37.0 nmol/L at baseline to 51.0 ± 38.2 nmol/L) with little change observed between 6 and 12 weeks (51.8 ± 36.4 nmol/L). The plasma creatinine concentration in vitamin D group was significantly decreased compared with the control group (P = 0.036) (79.8 ± 7.0 μmol/L at baseline vs 75.1 ± 5.4 μmol/L at week 12). No significant effect of vitamin D supplementation was determined on immunological parameters. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency is common among the aging population in the UK even during the summertime. Vitamin D supplementation at 1,000 IU/day for 12 weeks significantly increased plasma 25(OH)D concentration but showed no effect on metabolic and immunological parameters except decreased plasma creatinine.

Abstract
Background Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common chronic mental and behavioral disorder among children. Some studies showed the lower levels of vitamin D in patients with ADHD compared with the healthy people. Few clinical trials were conducted in this field. The present study will be performed to examine the effect of vitamin D supplementation in children with ADHD. Methods We will conduct a double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on brain waves, behavioral performance, serum nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in 50 patients with ADHD. The intervention group will receive one capsule 50,000 IU vitamin D every week, for 8 weeks. The control group will receive one placebo capsule containing 1000 mg olive oil every week. Electroencephalography will be performed for 10 min using Brain Master Discovery from 19 scalp sites both before the first intervention and the 10 sessions of the therapy. The artifact-free periods of 1-min electroencephalography data will be analyzed for quantitative electroencephalography measures. Discussion For the first time, this clinical trial will evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on brain waves, serum nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in patients with ADHD. The results of the present clinical trial will provide a better vision about the vitamin D efficacy in patients with ADHD. Abstract
Vitamin D is a cyclopentane polyhydrophenanthrene compound involved mainly in bone health and calcium metabolism but also autophagy, modulation of the gut microbiota, cell proliferation, immune functions and intestinal barrier integrity. The sources of vitamin D include sunlight, diet and vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D3, the most effective vitamin D isoform is produced in the human epidermis as a result of sunlight exposure. Vitamin D undergoes two hydroxylation reactions in the liver and kidney to reach its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Recent studies highlighted a complex spectrum of roles regarding the wellbeing of the gastrointestinal tract. Based on its antimicrobial effect, it was recently indicated that vitamin D supplementation in addition to standard eradication therapy might enhance H. pylori eradication rates. Moreover, it was suggested that low levels of vitamin D might also be involved in the acquisition of H. pylori infection. In terms of celiac disease, the negative effects of vitamin D deficiency might begin even during intrauterine life in the setting of maternal deficiency. Moreover, vitamin D is strongly related to the integrity of the gut barrier, which represents the core of the pathophysiology of celiac disease onset, in addition to being correlated with the histological findings of disease severity. The relationship between vitamin D and cystic fibrosis is supported by the involvement of this micronutrient in preserving lung function by clearing airway inflammation and preventing pathogen airway colonization. Moreover, this micronutrient might exert anticatabolic effects in CF patients. Inflammatory bowel disease patients also experience major benefits if they have a sufficient level of circulating vitamin D, proving its involvement in both induction and remission in these patients. The findings regarding the relationship between vitamin D, food allergies, diarrhea and constipation remain controversial, but vitamin D levels should be monitored in these patients in order to avoid hypo- and hypervitaminosis. Further studies are required to fill the remaining gaps in term of the complex impact of vitamin D on gastrointestinal homeostasis.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a global disorder associated with several chronic illnesses including dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. The impact of this association with both dyslipidemia and vitamin D deficiency on metabolomics profile is not yet fully understood. This study analyses the metabolomics and lipidomic signatures in relation to vitamin D status and dyslipidemia. Metabolomics data were collected from Qatar Biobank database and categorized into four groups based on vitamin D and dyslipidemia status. Metabolomics multivariate analysis was performed using the orthogonal partial least square discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) whilst linear models were used to assess the per-metabolite association with each of the four dyslipidemia/vitamin D combination groups. Our results indicate a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the younger age group, while dyslipidemia was more prominent in the older group. A significant alteration of metabolomics profile was observed among the dyslipidemic and vitamin D deficient individuals in comparison with control groups. These modifications reflected changes in some key pathways including ceramides, diacylglycerols, hemosylceramides, lysophospholipids, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylethanol amines, and sphingomyelins. Vitamin D deficiency and dyslipidemia have a deep impact on sphingomyelins profile. The modifications were noted at the level of ceramides and are likely to propagate through downstream pathways.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is a severe pandemic that has posed an unprecedented challenge to public health worldwide. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common digestive system malignancy, with high aggressiveness and poor prognosis. HCC patients may be vulnerable to COVID-19. Since the anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antiviral effects of vitamin D, we aimed to investigate the possible therapeutic effects and underlying action mechanisms of vitamin D in COVID-19 and HCC in this study. By using a range of bioinformatics and network pharmacology analyses, we identified many COVID-19/HCC target genes and analyzed their prognostic significance in HCC patients. Further, a risk score model with good predictive performance was developed to evaluate the prognosis of HCC patients with COVID-19 based on these target genes. Moreover, we identified seven possible pharmacological targets of vitamin D against COVID-19/HCC, including HMOX1, MB, TLR4, ALB, TTR, ACTA1 and RBP4. And we revealed the biological functions, signaling pathways and TF-miRNA coregulatory network of vitamin D in COVID-19/HCC. The enrichment analysis revealed that vitamin D could help in treating COVID-19/HCC effects through regulation of immune response, epithelial structure maintenance, regulation of chemokine and cytokine production involved in immune response and anti-inflammatory action. Finally, the molecular docking analyses were performed and showed that vitamin D possessed effective binding activity in COVID-19. Overall, we revealed the possible molecular mechanisms and pharmacological targets of vitamin D for treating COVID-19/HCC for the first time. But these findings need to be further validated in actual HCC patients with COVID-19 and need further investigation to confirm.

Abstract
Within the group of higher fungi, edible medicinal mushrooms have a long history of being used as food and in folk medicine. These species contain biologically active substances with many potential beneficial effects on human health. The Pleurotus genus is representative of medicinal mushrooms because Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most commonly cultivated culinary mushrooms. In our study, we focused on lesser-known species in the genus Pleurotus and measured their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. We prepared extracts of the mushrooms and analyzed them using HPLC−HRMS, GC−MS, and 1H-NMR. Significant differences in biological activities were found among the Pleurotus spp. extracts. A MeOH extract of P. flabellatus was the most active as a radical scavenger with the highest ORAC, while a chloroform extract had significant anti-inflammatory COX-2 activity. The 80% MeOH extract of P. flabellatus contained the highest amounts of ergosterol, ergothioneine, and mannitol. The 80% MeOH extract of P. ostreatus Florida was the most active in the NF-κB inhibition assay and had the highest content of β-glucans (43.3% by dry weight). Given the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of P. flabellatus, the potential therapeutic usefulness of this species is worth evaluating through in-depth investigations and confirmation by clinical trials.

Abstract
Catestatin is a pleiotropic peptide with a wide range of immunomodulatory effects. Considering that patients with a severe COVID-19 infection have a major immunological dysregulation, the aim of this study was to evaluate catestatin levels in patients with COVID-19 treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) and to compare them between the fatal and non-fatal outcomes. The study included 152 patients with severe COVID-19, out of which 105 had a non-fatal outcome and 47 had a fatal outcome. Serum catestatin levels were estimated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in a commercially available diagnostic kit. The results show that catestatin levels were significantly lower in the fatal group compared to the non-fatal group (16.6 ± 7.8 vs. 23.2 ± 9.2 ng/mL; p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between serum catestatin levels and vitamin D levels (r = 0.338; p < 0.001) while there was also a significant positive correlation between serum catestatin levels and growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) levels (r = −0.345; p < 0.001). Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression showed that catestatin, GDF-15 and leukocyte count were significant predictors for COVID-19 survival. These findings imply that catestatin could be playing a major immunomodulatory role in the complex pathophysiology of the COVID-19 infection and that serum catestatin could also be a predictor of a poor COVID-19 outcome.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder seen in women and is characterized by chronic pelvic pain and infertility. This disorder is becoming more prevalent with increased morbidity. The etiology of endometriosis remains to be fully elucidated, which will lead to improved therapeutic options. In this review, we will evaluate the biochemical mechanisms leading to oxidative stress and their implication in the pathophysiology of endometriosis, as well as potential treatments that target these processes. A comprehensive exploration of previous research revealed that endometriosis is associated with elevated reactive oxygen species and oxidation products, decreased antioxidants and detoxification enzymes, and dysregulated iron metabolism. High levels of oxidative stress contributed to inflammation, extracellular matrix degradation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation, which may explain its role in endometriosis. Endometriosis-associated pain was attributed to neurogenic inflammation and a feed-forward mechanism involving macrophages, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and pain-inducing prostaglandins. N-acetylcysteine, curcumin, melatonin, and combined vitamin C and E supplementation displayed promising results for the treatment of endometriosis, but further research is needed for their use in this population.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Starting in early December 2019, the novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) from infection with COVID-19 has caused a global pandemic. Many aspects of its pathogenesis and related clinical consequences are still unclear. Early diagnosis and dynamic monitoring of prognostic factors are essential to improve the ability to manage COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to provide an account of the role played by vitamins C and D on the onset, progression and severity of COVID-19. Clinical features and infection-related risk factors are also briefly discussed. Material and Methods: In March 2022, the main online databases were accessed. All the articles that investigate the possible role of vitamins C and D on COVID-19 susceptibility, severity and progression were considered. Results: The current evidence on vitamin C and D supplementation in patients with COVID-19 infection is inconsistent and controversial. In some studies, vitamins were used as coadjuvant of a formal experimental therapy, while in others as main treatment. Ethnicity and hospital setting (inpatient/outpatient) were also variable. Moreover, there was no consensus between studies in administration protocol: high heterogeneity in dosage, administration, and duration of the treatment were evident. Finally, some studies administered vitamins pre- and/or during COVID infection, in patients with different risk factors and infection severity. Conclusions: While waiting to develop a targeted, safe and effective therapy, it is important to investigate individual predisposition and proper disease management. Concluding, available data on the use of nutraceuticals in COVID-19 are inconsistent. However, there is a lack of evidence-based guidelines which recommend vitamin C and D supplementation in patients with COVID-19, and results from high quality randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are inconsistent. Current investigations so far are mostly observational, and include a relatively small sample size which can lead to biased results. Large-scale multicentre studies are therefore needed.
