Bibliometric Analysis of Research on the Comorbidity of Cancer and Pain

Thirty-year survey of bibliometrics used in the research literature of pain: Analysis, evolution, and pitfalls

During the last decades, the emergence of Bibliometrics and the progress in Pain research have led to a proliferation of bibliometric studies on the medical and scientific literature of pain (B/P). This study charts the evolution of the B/P literature published during the last 30 years. Using various searching techniques, 189 B/P studies published from 1993 to August 2022 were collected for analysis-half were published since 2018. Most of the selected B/P publications use classic bibliometric analysis of Pain in toto, while some focus on specific types of Pain with Headache/Migraine, Low Back Pain, Chronic Pain, and Cancer Pain dominating. Each study is characterized by the origin (geographical, economical, institutional, …) and the medical/scientific context over a specified time span to provide a detailed landscape of the Pain research literature. Some B/P studies have been developed to pinpoint difficulties in appropriately identifying the Pain literature or to highlight some general publishing pitfalls. Having observed that most of the recent B/P studies have integrated newly emergent software visualization tools (SVTs), we found an increase of anomalies and suggest that readers exercise caution when interpreting results in the B/P literature details.

Bibliometric and Visualized Analysis of the Current Status on STING Signaling Pathway and Cancer

Cancer, as the second leading cause of death worldwide, has become an ongoing public health challenge and its treatment has received much attention, with immunotherapy becoming a hot research topic in recent years. The interferon gene stimulating factor (STING)-mediated signaling pathway has a “double-edged sword” role in cancer, which plays different roles in different types and stages of tumors. In this paper, we discuss the current research status, cooperation, and hotspots of STING signaling pathway in cancer from 2008–2022 using CiteSpace software based on the literature of cancer and STING signaling pathway. In addition, we predicted future research trends in this field by analysis, and the results showed that the STING signaling pathway is rapidly increasing in cancer research, and its role in tumor microenvironment and immunotherapy has become a new hot spot in current research and will continue to receive high attention.

Explicating the publication paradigm by bibliometric approaches: A case of interplay between nanoscience and ferroptosis

Background

Ferroptosis has been widely investigated as an emerging drug target, while its combination with nanoscience provides bourgeoning application prospects. The development of ferroptosis regulating nanomedicines have attracted worldwide attentions in recent years. It would be meaningful to describe the relevant publication paradigm.

Methods

Herein, a bibliometric analysis was performed using the database of Web of Science Core Collection to clarify the publication paradigm. The development of related publications in the last 6 years was described, and the revolutionary trends were figured out. Ultimately, the possible future exploration directions were proposed.

Results

The bibliometric analysis of 327 documents of interest indicated that the main research focus was in multiple fields including Materials science, Science & technology, Chemistry, and Pharmacology & pharmacy. With widely cooperation and strong funding, the researchers from Chinese organizations contributed most of publications, followed with United States and Australia. Cocitation analysis revealed that several original papers reported the key molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis were considered as the foundation for subsequent studies, and some nanomedicines-related documents were taken as examples and discussed. Mining results showed that the mechanism evaluation of ferroptosis regulation therapy for cancer treatment was the hotspot. Then, several possible future explorations of ferroptosis-related nanoscience were presented and discussed.

Conclusions

The bibliometric profile of nanoscience-ferroptosis research was analyzed in detail. We believe that the bibliometric analysis could act as a robust method for explicating the publication paradigm as a certain field.

Unveiling the knowledge domain and emerging trends of olfactory dysfunction with depression or anxiety: A bibliometrics study

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) accompanied by depression or anxiety is a very common clinical problem, and there has been a growing number of studies on OD with depression or anxiety in recent decades. This study performed bibliometric and visual analyses of the literature on OD with depression or anxiety to derive research trends and identify emerging research foci. Relevant publications were obtained from the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science Core Collection databases (2002–2021). CiteSpace and VOSviewer were applied to identify and evaluate research foci and emerging trends in this research domain. The analyses found that the number of publications related to OD with depression or anxiety has increased significantly over the past 20 years, up from 15 in 2002 to 114 in 2022. The country that ranked highest in the number of articles and international cooperation was the United States. The top 10 most frequent keywords were “depression,” “olfaction,” “anxiety,” “dysfunction,” “olfactory bulbectomy,” “olfactory dysfunction,” “Parkinson’s disease,” “odor identification,” “brain,” and “disorders.” Analysis of keywords with the strongest citation bursts revealed that “oxidative stress” is an emerging research hotspot. A timeline chart of the cluster of co-cited references demonstrated that Parkinson’s disease was always a topic of interest in this area of research. This study conducted an objective, comprehensive, and systematic analysis of these publications, and identified the development of trends and hotspots in this research domain. It is hoped that this work will provide scholars, worldwide, with information to assist them in further research and the development of new therapies.

A review for the pharmacological effects of paeoniflorin in the nervous system

Paeoniflorin, a terpenoid glycoside compound extracted from Paeonia lactiflora Pall, shows preventive and therapeutic effects in various types of nervous system disorders. However, to date, no comprehensive knowledge on the pharmacological effects of paeoniflorin on the nervous system is available online. Clarification of this issue may be useful for the development of paeoniflorin as a new drug for the treatment of nervous system disorders. To this end, the authors summarize the pharmacological aspects of paeoniflorin and its possible mechanisms, such as restoration of mitochondrial function; inhibition of neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular apoptosis; activation of adenosine A1 receptor, cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2); or enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and serotonin function, in the prevention of disorders such as cerebral ischemia, subarachnoid hemorrhage, vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, post-traumatic syndrome disorder, and epilepsy, by reviewing the previously published literature.

Research Hotspots and Frontiers in Post Stroke Pain: A Bibliometric Analysis Study

Background

Pain is a common complication after stroke with a high incidence and mortality rate. Many studies in the field of pain after stroke have been published in various journals. However, bibliometric analysis in the domain of pain after stroke is still lacking. This study aimed to deliver a visual analysis to analyze the global trends in research on the comorbidity of pain after stroke in the last 12 years.

Methods

The publications from the Web of Science (WoS) in the last 12 years (from 2010 to 2021) were collected and retrieved. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the relationship of publication year with countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords.

Results

A total of 322 publications were included in the analysis. A continuous but unstable growth in the number of articles published on pain after stroke was observed over the last 12 years. The Peoples' R China (65), Chang Gung University (10), and Topic in Stroke Rehabilitation (16) were the country, institution, and journal with the highest number of publications, respectively. Analysis of keywords showed that shoulder pain after stroke and central post-stroke pain were the research development trends and focus in this research field.

Conclusion

This study provides a visual analysis method for the trend and frontiers of pain research after stroke. In the future, large sample, randomized controlled trials are needed to identify the potential treatments and pathophysiology for pain after stroke.

The relationship between the expression of soluble programmed cell death-1 and cancer pain: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis

BACKGROUND

The immune checkpoint programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) plays a critical role in immune regulation. Recent studies have demonstrated functional PD-1 expression in peripheral sensory neurons, which contributes to neuronal excitability, pain, and opioid analgesia. However, the relationship between the expression of soluble programmed cell death-1(sPD-1) and cancer pain is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between sPD-1 expression level and cancer pain through meta-analysis.

METHODS

Studies were selected from Pubmed, Web of science, Embase, Google Scholar, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using the random-effect model or fixed-effect model to assess the association between sPD-1 expression level and cancer pain. All analyses were performed with the Stata 14 software.

RESULTS

This review will be disseminated in print by peer-review.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study will help us to determine whether the expression level of sPD-1 is related to cancer pain.

The private information from individuals will not be published. This systematic review also should not endanger participant rights. Ethical approval is not available. The results may be published in a peer-reviewed journal or disseminated in relevant conferences.
