Abstract
Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer simulation of a three-dimensional environment, often displayed by means of a headset with integrated screens. While VR is known to consistently stimulate the autonomic nervous system, little is known regarding a possible effect on corticospinal excitability, or regarding a potential link between autonomous and voluntary nervous system modulations during VR. Fifteen healthy young participants were enrolled in a single-session experiment. They were seated in a comfortable chair and equipped with a VR headset that displayed a simulated roller coaster ride. Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) and cardiovascular markers (heart rate, heart rate variability) were monitored throughout the experiment. Corticospinal excitability was quantified by measuring the amplitude of the motor evoked potential (MEP), elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation on the cortical representation of the right First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI) muscle. Results showed modulation in skin conductance, according to the phase of the roller coaster. Corticospinal excitability was increased during downhill and decreased during uphill phases, as compared to flat sections. The evolution of MEP/Mmax was concomitant and correlated to the evolution of GSR. No effect was observed on any of the cardiovascular markers. The present study showed that VR can be an efficient stimulus to modulate corticospinal excitability, even in the absence of a motor simulated situation. These data suggest a potential link between voluntary and autonomic nervous system regulation during VR of stressful situations. This study highlights the attractiveness of VR as an efficient stressor for both autonomous and motor systems, in sport training and in rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging epidemiological evidence indicates nature exposure could be associated with greater health benefits among groups in lower versus higher socioeconomic positions. One possible mechanism underpinning this evidence is described by our framework: (susceptibility) adults in low socioeconomic positions face higher exposure to persistent psychosocial stressors in early life, inducing a pro-inflammatory phenotype as a lifelong susceptibility to stress; (differential susceptibility) susceptible adults are more sensitive to the health risks of adverse (stress-promoting) environments, but also to the health benefits of protective (stress-buffering) environments. OBJECTIVE Experimental investigation of a pro-inflammatory phenotype as a mechanism facilitating greater stress recovery from nature exposure. METHODS We determined differences in stress recovery (via heart rate variability) caused by exposure to a nature or office virtual reality environment (10 min) after an acute stressor among 64 healthy college-age males with varying levels of susceptibility (socioeconomic status, early life stress, and a pro-inflammatory state [inflammatory reactivity and glucocorticoid resistance to an in vitro bacterial challenge]). RESULTS Findings for inflammatory reactivity and glucocorticoid resistance were modest but consistently trended towards better recovery in the nature condition. Differences in recovery were not observed for socioeconomic status or early life stress. DISCUSSION Among healthy college-age males, we observed expected trends according to their differential susceptibility when assessed as inflammatory reactivity and glucocorticoid resistance, suggesting these biological correlates of susceptibility could be more proximal indicators than self-reported assessments of socioeconomic status and early life stress. If future research in more diverse populations aligns with these trends, this could support an alternative conceptualization of susceptibility as increased environmental sensitivity, reflecting heightened responses to adverse, but also protective environments. With this knowledge, future investigators could examine how individual differences in environmental sensitivity could provide an opportunity for those who are the most susceptible to experience the greatest health benefits from nature exposure.

Abstract
Introduction Postural threat elicits modifications to standing balance. However, the underlying neural mechanism(s) responsible remain unclear. Shifts in attention focus including directing more attention to balance when threatened may contribute to the balance changes. Sample entropy, a measure of postural sway regularity with lower values reflecting less automatic and more conscious control of balance, may support attention to balance as a mechanism to explain threat-induced balance changes. The main objectives were to investigate the effects of postural threat on sample entropy, and the relationships between threat-induced changes in physiological arousal, perceived anxiety, attention focus, sample entropy, and traditional balance measures. A secondary objective was to explore if biological sex influenced these relationships. Methods Healthy young adults (63 females, 42 males) stood quietly on a force plate without (No Threat) and with (Threat) the expectation of receiving a postural perturbation (i.e., forward/backward support surface translation). Mean electrodermal activity and anterior-posterior centre of pressure (COP) sample entropy, mean position, root mean square, mean power frequency, and power within low (0-0.05 Hz), medium (0.5-1.8 Hz), and high-frequency (1.8-5 Hz) components were calculated for each trial. Perceived anxiety and attention focus to balance, task objectives, threat-related stimuli, self-regulatory strategies, and task-irrelevant information were rated after each trial. Results and Discussion Significant threat effects were observed for all measures, except low-frequency sway. Participants were more physiologically aroused, more anxious, and directed more attention to balance, task objectives, threat-related stimuli, and self-regulatory strategies, and less to task-irrelevant information in the Threat compared to No Threat condition. Participants also increased sample entropy, leaned further forward, and increased the amplitude and frequency of COP displacements, including medium and high-frequency sway, when threatened. Males and females responded in the same way when threatened, except males had significantly larger threat-induced increases in attention to balance and high-frequency sway. A combination of sex and threat-induced changes in physiological arousal, perceived anxiety, and attention focus accounted for threat-induced changes in specific traditional balance measures, but not sample entropy. Increased sample entropy when threatened may reflect a shift to more automatic control. Directing more conscious control to balance when threatened may act to constrain these threat-induced automatic changes to balance.

Abstract
Loss aversion, the principle that losses have a greater impact on decision-making than gains, can be modulated by stress. Most findings reported that stress reduces loss aversion, in line with the alignment hypothesis. Yet, decision-making was always assessed at the early stages of the stress response. Instead, the latter phase of the stress response enhances the salience-network and then, it could amplify the salience of losses, thereby increasing loss aversion. To our knowledge, it has never been studied how the latter stress response influences loss aversion and our aim is to fill this gap. 92 participants were divided into experimental and control group. The first one was exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test, and controls viewed a match-length distractor video. Both groups performed a mixed gamble task to measure loss aversion through a Bayesian-computational model. During and after the stressor, experimental group exhibited signs of both physiological and psychological stress which indicated that stress induction was effective. However, rather than increasing, loss aversion of stressed participants was lower. These results constitute a new evidence of stress influencing loss aversion and are discussed within the alignment hypothesis, according to which stress aligns sensitivity to gains and losses.

Abstract
ABSTRACT A reciprocity between the stress and the pain system is recognized; however, the manner by which sex affects this reciprocity is unclear. Understanding the interactions of stress, pain, and sex may shed light on the apparent women's vulnerability to chronic pain, which often coexists with increased distress, and to affective disorders, which often coexist with chronic pain. The study's aim was to examine the effect of acute, validated, psychosocial stress on pain perception and modulation of women and men in a controlled manner. Participants were 82 women and 66 men. Heat-pain threshold, heat-pain tolerance, and pain modulation by temporal summation of pain (TSP), and pain adaptation were measured before and after exposure to the Montreal Imaging Stress Task (MIST) or to a sham task. The stress response was verified by perceived ratings of stress and anxiety, autonomic variables, and salivary cortisol. A significant stress response was obtained by the MIST among both sexes; however, women displayed a greater increase in perceived distress, and men displayed a greater increase in cortisol. Among women, TSP decreased and pain adaptation increased following the MIST, responses that were predicted by perceived distress levels. Among men, TSP increased following the MIST but was not predicted by the stress variables. In conclusion, acute stress manipulation seems to differentially affect both stress and pain responses of women and men: women exhibited stress-induced antinociception and men exhibited stress-induced pronociception. Higher perceived stress levels among women may trigger a temporary increase in pain inhibition mechanisms to serve evolutionary purposes.

Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) is known to induce substantial activation of brain's motor regions. It remains unclear to what extent virtual reality can trigger the sensorimotor system, and more particularly, whether it can affect lower nervous levels. In this study, we aimed to assess whether VR simulation of challenging and stressful postural situations (Richie's plank experience) could interfere with spinal excitability of postural muscles in 15 healthy young participants. The H-reflex of the triceps surae muscles was elicited with electrical nerve stimulation while participants were standing and wearing a VR headset. Participants went through several conditions, during which stimulations were evoked: standing still (noVR), standing in VR on the ground (groundVR), standing on the edge of a building (plankVR), and falling from the building (fallingVR). Myoelectrical activity of the triceps surae muscles was measured throughout the experiment. Leg and head movements were also measured by means of accelerometers to account for body oscillations. First, no differences in head rotations and myoelectrical activity were to be noted between conditions. Second, triceps H-reflex (HMAX/MMAX) was not affected from noVR to groundVR and plankVR. The most significant finding was a drastic decrease in H-reflex during falling (-47 ± 26.9% between noVR and fallingVR, P = 0.015). It is suggested that experiencing a postural threat in VR efficiently modulates spinal excitability, despite remaining in a quiet standing posture. This study suggests that simulated falling mimics the neural adjustments observed during actual postural challenge tasks.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The present study showed a modulation of spinal excitability induced by virtual reality (VR). In the standing position, soleus H-reflex was downmodulated during a simulated falling, in the absence of apparent changes in body oscillations. Since the same behavior is usually observed during real falling, it was suggested that the visual cues provided by VR were sufficiently strong to lead the neuromuscular system to mimic the actual modulation.

Associations Between Fatigue, Sleep Disturbance, Physical Activity, and Quality of Life for Children With Cancer: A Correlational Study. Cancer Nurs 2022; 45:421-429. Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatigue, sleep disturbance, and physical inactivity have been increasingly recognized as health issues that negatively affect quality of life (QoL) for children with cancer. Existing studies focus either on children receiving treatment or in survivorship, but not on both populations in a study. This causes difficulty in examining differences of these issues between treatment statuses and identifying associations of these issues with QoL. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to examine differences in fatigue, sleep disturbance, physical activity, and QoL between on- and off-treatment children and to identify their associations with QoL. METHODS The correlational study was conducted with 100 children with cancer 7 to 12 years old. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate regression analyses were used. RESULTS Participants undergoing treatment had higher degrees of fatigue ( P = .002), physical inactivity ( P = .004), and QoL distress ( P = .001) than those in survivorship. Mean sums (SDs) of sleep disturbance were 47.15 (8.23) and 48.48 (7.13) in the on- and off-treatment groups. Age ( P = .000), sex ( P = .023), fatigue ( P = .000), and sleep disturbance ( P = .004) were significantly associated with QoL distress. CONCLUSIONS This study is unique in that a frame of reference is addressed to gain insight into the distinct developmental issues of school-aged children undergoing cancer treatment and in survivorship. More studies are needed. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Interventions to increase QoL should target children who are younger, male, and have higher levels of fatigue and sleep disturbance. Diagnosis and treatment of sleep disturbance should be considered as part of routine activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) constitute a central public health concern in adolescence. Previous studies emphasized the difficulty to cope with negative life events during adolescence as a risk factor for STB. Familial and genetic liability has also been documented to explain STB risk. Nevertheless, less is known about aggregate genetic liability and its possible interaction with negative life events. Moreover, information is needed to understand how these factors differently affect STB in boys and girls. METHODS We evaluated suicidal ideation at 17 years old and examined the role of aggregate genetic liability, negative life events, and their interaction in a sample of 2,571 adolescents. Aggregate genetic liability was measured using a polygenic score (PGS) for suicide attempts. Negative life events were assessed in the past year and included parental divorce and hospitalizations, death of friends and relatives, bullying, failure-related events, and involvement with drugs. We conducted univariable and multivariable general linear models stratified by sex and evaluated the interactions between PGS and negative life events in subsequent models. RESULTS Analyses showed that suicidal ideation in boys is associated with failure to achieve something important (estimate = 0.198), bullying (estimate = 0.285), drug use (estimate = 0.325), and parental death (estimate = 0.923). In girls, both aggregate genetic liability (estimate = 0.041) and negative life events (failure at school [estimate = 0.120], failure to achieve something important [estimate = 0.279], drug use [estimate = 0.395], and bullying [estimate = 0.472]) were associated with suicidal ideation. Interaction analyses suggested that PGS interacted with drug use and failures at school, though this would need additional support. CONCLUSIONS These findings represent significant contributions to the fundamental understanding of STB in adolescence, suggesting to monitor the impact of negative life events during adolescence to better prevent suicide risk. Genetic liability is also of importance in girls and might influence the way they respond to environmental threats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Living near green spaces may benefit various health outcomes. However, no studies have investigated the greenness-bone linkage in the general population. Moreover, to which extent ambient air pollution (AAP), physical activity (PA), and body mass index (BMI) mediate this relationship remains unclear. We aimed to explore the association between greenness and bone strength and the potential mediating roles of AAP, PA, and BMI in Chinese adults. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis enrolled 66,053 adults from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort in 2018-2019. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) were employed to define residential greenness. The calcaneus quantitative ultrasound index (QUI) was used to indicate bone strength. Multiple linear regression models and mediation analyses were used to estimate the residential greenness-bone strength association and potential pathways operating through AAP (represented by PM2.5 [particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter]), PA, and BMI. Stratification analyses were performed to identify susceptible populations. RESULTS Higher residential exposure to greenness was significantly associated with an increase in QUI, with changes (95% confidence interval) of 3.28 (3.05, 3.50), 3.57 (3.34, 3.80), 2.68 (2.46, 2.90), and 2.93 (2.71, 3.15) for every interquartile range increase in NDVI500m, NDVI1000m, EVI500m, and EVI1000m, respectively. Sex, urbanicity, annual family income, smoking, and drinking significantly modified the association of greenness-bone strength, with more remarkable associations in males, urban residents, subjects from wealthier families, smokers, and drinkers. For the NDVI500m/EVI500m-QUI relationship, the positive mediating roles of PM2.5 and PA were 6.70%/8.50 and 2.43%/2.69%, respectively, whereas those negative for BMI and PA-BMI were 0.88%/1.06% and 0.05%/0.05%, respectively. CONCLUSION Living in a greener area may predict higher bone strength, particularly among males, urban residents, wealthier people, smokers, and drinkers. AAP, PA, BMI, and other factors may partially mediate the positive association. Our findings underscore the importance of optimizing greenness planning and management policies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) research probes stress environments that are infeasible to create in the real world. However, because research simulations are applied to narrow populations, it remains unclear if VR simulations can stimulate a broadly applicable stress-response. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on studies using VR stress tasks and biomarkers. METHODS Included papers (N = 52) measured cortisol, heart rate (HR), galvanic skin response (GSR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), parasympathetic activity (RMSSD), sympathovagal balance (LF/HF), and/or salivary alpha-amylase (sAA). Effect sizes (ES) and confidence intervals (CI) were calculated based on standardized mean change of baseline-to-peak biomarker levels. RESULTS From baseline-to-peak (ES, CI), analyses showed a statistically significant change in cortisol (0.56, 0.28-0.83), HR (0.68, 0.53-0.82), GSR (0.59, 0.36-0.82), SBP (.55, 0.19-0.90), DBP (.64, 0.23-1.05), RSA (-0.59, -0.88 to -0.30), and sAA (0.27, 0.092-0.45). There was no effect for RMSSD and LF/HF. CONCLUSION VR stress tasks elicited a varied magnitude of physiological stress reactivity. VR may be an effective tool in stress research.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic confronts stress researchers in psychology and neuroscience with unique challenges. Widely used experimental paradigms such as the Trier Social Stress Test feature physical social encounters to induce stress by means of social-evaluative threat. As lockdowns and contact restrictions currently prevent in-person meetings, established stress induction paradigms are often difficult to use. Despite these challenges, stress research is of pivotal importance as the pandemic will likely increase the prevalence of stress-related mental disorders. Therefore, we review recent research trends like virtual reality, pre-recordings and online adaptations regarding their usefulness for established stress induction paradigms. Such approaches are not only crucial for stress research during COVID-19 but will likely stimulate the field far beyond the pandemic. They may facilitate research in new contexts and in homebound or movement-restricted participant groups. Moreover, they allow for new experimental variations that may advance procedures as well as the conceptualization of stress itself. While posing challenges for stress researchers undeniably, the COVID-19 pandemic may evolve into a driving force for progress eventually.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because of the lack of anesthesia workforce, anesthesiologists are forced to work overtime and more night shifts, which can disturb their biological rhythm and cause severe stress and depression, potentially leading to negative and even devastating outcomes for both themselves and patients. Virtual reality (VR), a new method to reduce stress and pain for patients, has been widely used in biomedical fields. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential effectiveness of VR technology in reducing stress among night-shift anesthesiologists. METHODS In this randomized controlled, crossover, single-center clinical trial, a total of 30 anesthesiologists will be enrolled and randomized in a 1:1 allocation to either the VR immersion group (intervention group) or the routine night-shift group (control group) with a washout of 1 week. Anesthesiologists in the intervention group will undergo VR immersion twice, while anesthesiologists in the control group will not watch VR videos during the night shift. The primary outcome will be the difference in the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) score between the two groups. Secondary outcomes will include the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS), perceived stress scores (visual analogue scale (VAS)), and Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) scores; levels of satisfaction among the participants; incidence of arrhythmia; and incidence of chest tightness, headache, and palpitations. DISCUSSION It is unknown whether the use of VR technology during the night shift can reduce stress among anesthesiologists. With the widespread use of VR technology, a positive result in this trial could spur hospitals to apply VR technology to reduce stress among night-shift doctors in every department and provide a relatively relaxed working environment. Abstract
BACKGROUND Associations between personality traits and problematic smartphone use (PSU) among individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) have not been widely investigated. The current study aims to assess whether SUD status moderates the association between personality traits and PSU. METHODS The study group included 151 individuals with SUD and a normative sample (NS) comprised of 554 non-SUD students. The following self-report questionnaires were used: the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale (MPPUS-10) to assess problematic smartphone use (PSU), the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) to assess intensity of internet use, and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) to assess Personality traits. RESULTS SUD status moderated the association between neuroticism and openness to new experiences on PSU. That is, greater neuroticism and openness were significantly associated with more excessive PSU among the NS. In the SUD group, greater openness was a significant protective factor against PSU. Moderation results were similar when using the IAT (which was significantly correlated with MPPUS) as an outcome. CONCLUSIONS The presence of SUD may influence how personality traits are associated with problematic mobile phone/internet use. Given that this is among one of the first studies examining this topic, findings should be replicated with additional studies.
