Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is strongly associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), but the shared pathophysiological mechanisms between them are ambiguous, and the aim of this study was to explore the shared genetic features and associated pathways between these two disorders. MDD-related genes and mitochondrial function genes were downloaded from the GeneCards database. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis of Merge Cohort (GSE80432 and GSE34526) was performed to identify PCOS-related genes. Overlaps between PCOS-related genes, MDD-related genes, and mitochondrial function genes were defined as mitochondrial function-related shared genes. Functional enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis were performed on the shared genes. Functional genes were then identified using Last Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator Regression (LASSO), and a support vector machine (SVM-RFE) was constructed to measure the accuracy of the calculations. Finally, the results were tested using the whole blood datasets GSE54250 (for PCOS) and GSE98793 (for MDD) as external validation sets. A total of 498 PCOS-related genes, 5909 MDD-related genes, and 7232 mitochondrial function genes were acquired, and totally, 40 shared genes were obtained from the overlap of the above three. The shared mitochondrial function genes were enriched for biological processes mainly involving cholesterol biosynthetic process, lipid metabolic process, triglyceride biosynthetic process, response to drug phosphatidic acid biosynthetic process, and endoplasmic reticulum membrane. Based on LASSO regression and SVM-RFE model, NPAS2 and NTS were identified as characteristic genes shared by two disorders. According to two external validation sets for PCOS and MDD, NPAS2 was finally identified as a key shared gene. Our analysis identified a mitochondrial functional gene-NPAS2-as the most critical candidate for linking PCOS and MDD. The present findings may provide new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of PCOS and MDD comorbidities.

Abstract
(1) The prevalence of depression is two times higher in women than men. Black women have an increased risk of depression due to stressors such as low socioeconomic status and perceived discrimination. Depression is likely influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Psychosocial stressors can influence DNA methylation (DNAm), leading to changes in gene expression and ultimately, depression. The objective of this study was to examine associations between DNAm and depressive symptoms in Black women. (2) This study was a secondary analysis of data from the Intergenerational Impact of Genetic and Psychological Factors on Blood Pressure (InterGEN) Study. Perceived discrimination was assessed using Krieger's Experiences of Discrimination and Waelde's Race-Related Events Scale, and participants were screened for depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory. Raw data from saliva samples were analyzed using the Illumina Infinium Epic (850 K) BeadChip and then preprocessed in RStudio. (3) Differential methylation analysis identified DNAm sites and regions associated with depressive symptoms. Six DNAm sites had a q-value less than 0.05. Additionally, of the 25 regions identified, 12 were associated with neurological diseases or disorders. (4) These findings suggest that there is a neurological component to depression, which should be considered during treatment.

Abstract
Data on the association of the Mediterranean diet (MD) with depressive symptoms in older people at high risk of depression are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional association of the adherence to the MD and its components with depressive symptoms in an Italian cohort of older men and women. A total of 325 men and 473 women aged 65–97 years (2019–2023) answered a 102-item semi-quantitative FFQ, which was used to calculate the Mediterranean diet score (MDS). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale; subjects with a score of 16 or more were considered to have depression. Multivariable logistic regression was used for statistical analysis. The occurrence of depressive symptoms was 19·8 % (8·0 % men, 27·9 % women). High adherence to MDS (highest tertile) significantly reduced the odds of having depressive symptoms by 54·6 % (OR 0·454, 95 % CI 0·266, 0·776). In sex-stratified analysis, the reduction was evident in women (OR 0·385, 95 % CI 0·206, 0·719) but not in men (OR 0·828, 95 % CI 0·254, 2·705). Looking at the association of MDS components with depressive symptoms, we found an inverse significant association with fish consumption and the MUFA:SFA ratio above the median only in women (OR 0·444, 95 % CI 0·283, 0·697 and OR 0·579, 95 % CI 0·345, 0·971, respectively). High adherence to the MDS, and a high fish intake and MUFA:SFA ratio were associated with lower depressive symptoms in women only. Future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings and to explore the underlying biological mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a serious depression that develops in the first year, with unknown explained reasons. Many studies evaluated the impact of Vitamin D (VD) levels on depression during pregnancy and postnatal. This narrative review aims to review any association between serum VD levels during pregnancy and the development of PPD. Materials and Methods PPD data from published trials and research articles (period from 2012 to 2022) were assessed through PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar using the following terms: Depression, pregnancy, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OH VD), vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and postpartum (PP). Articles were selected manually and with careful tracking to avoid duplication. Articles that investigated any association between VD levels during pregnancy and PPD in the time frame were included in the study, while articles investigating VD levels of PP without depression were excluded. Results In this narrative review, five out of seven studies showed an association between PPD and VDD during pregnancy. Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) enrolled among different studies from 3 days to 1 year PP to assess PPD. Conclusions Pregnant women with VDD are significantly associated with PPD. Longitudinal follow-up studies are needed to evaluate the association between VDD with PPD. Screening VD levels among pre-postnatal mothers may be essential for awareness programs that can be implemented to promote remission of postnatal depression.

Abstract
Objective: Research findings on the relationship between vitamin D and suicide are not consistent; therefore, the objective of the present paper is to assess the relationship between vitamin D and suicide behaviors using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Method : A search strategy was developed using keywords including "Vitamin D", "Vitamin D deficiency", "suicide" "attempted suicide", "completed suicide", "Suicide, Attempted", "Suicidal Ideation." We searched databases including Scopus, Medline, Web of Science, and Google Scholar by July 7, 2022. We examined the titles, abstracts, and full texts of the articles to select eligible ones. To pool the results of the selected studies, we used the random-effect method and mean difference as the effect size. The quality of the articles was evaluated by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Moreover, heterogeneity and bias of reporting were evaluated by the I2 statistic and Egger's and Begg's tests, respectively. Results: Out of 149 studies retrieved in the databases, 11 studies were included in the final phase. Among these, the pooled findings of seven studies included in the meta-analysis phase showed that low levels of vitamin D are related to increased probability for suicide behaviors (P < 0.05). Moreover, subgroup analysis showed a significant relationship between vitamin D and suicide ideation and suicide attempt (P < 0.05). In addition, the I2 statistic indicated moderate heterogeneity (58%) and Egger's and Begg's tests did not show any evidence of publication bias (P > 0.05). Conclusion: This study provides evidence in favor of the relationship between vitamin D and suicide behaviors. It suggests that insufficient levels of vitamin D play a role in suicidal behaviors. However, it should be noted that further and stronger evidence is needed to establish this role. Finally, incorporating vitamin D-rich foods into the diet or taking vitamin D supplements is recommended to reduce the risk of suicide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D has been suggested to play a role in the development of depression, but the nature of the relationship between the two is still not fully understood. Although some studies have shown an association between vitamin D deficiency and depression, others have yielded inconsistent or inconclusive results. As a result, further research is needed to better understand the relationship between vitamin D and depression. OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess the association between serum vitamin D and the risk of depressive symptoms in individuals aged 20 years and older in the United States. METHODS We selected 7562 participants from the 2007-2018 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants' serum vitamin D levels were determined from laboratory data, and those with a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score of ≥ 10 were considered to have depressive symptoms. Associations between vitamin D and depressive symptoms were investigated using multiple logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and smoothed curve fitting. RESULTS In our study, 11.17% of the participants had depression. Multiple regression stratified analysis showed a significant inverse association between serum vitamin D and depression in the 29-39 years age group after full adjustment (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.31-0.95, p = 0.0316). This result was supported by subgroup analysis and smoothed curve fitting. CONCLUSIONS The association between serum vitamin D and depressive status in US adults varied across populations. Among those aged 29-39 years, vitamin D supplementation tended to show a lower rate of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Association between vitamin D levels and the occurrence of depression are not always consistent. The present cohort study aimed to determine this association in older adults, using a method for measuring vitamin D levels which is more accurate than those used in previous studies. METHODS Participants were 3447 individuals aged 40-74 years without depressive symptoms at baseline who participated in the 5-year follow-up survey. The baseline investigation, including a self-administered questionnaire survey and blood collection, was conducted in 2011-2013. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels were measured, and divided into overall quartiles summed up by sub-quartiles and stratified by age, sex, and season. The outcome was depressive symptoms determined by the CES-D (11-item, cut-off score of 6/7) 5 years later. Covariates were demographics, lifestyles, baseline CES-D score, and disease history. RESULTS Mean plasma 25(OH)D levels were 58.0 nmol/L in men and 45.7 in women (P < 0.0001), and cumulative incidences of depressive symptoms were 249/1577 (15.8 %) in men and 313/1870 (16.7 %) in women (P = 0.4526). The lower 25(OH)D quartile group had higher adjusted ORs in men and women combined (P for trend = 0.0107) and women (P for trend = 0.0003), but not in men. Adjusted ORs of the lowest quartile group were significantly higher than the highest group in men and women combined (OR = 1.39, 95 % CI: 1.06-1.81) and women (OR = 1.89, 95 % CI: 1.31-2.72). LIMITATION Depressive symptoms were self-reported. CONCLUSIONS Low vitamin D levels were associated with a high risk of depressive symptoms, especially in women. Women are thus considered a major target for preventing vitamin D deficiency to address depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide and is associated with various diseases, including depression. Previous studies on vitamin D and depression have different conclusions. OBJECTIVES Our study aimed to examine the association between vitamin D levels in seasonal variation and depression. METHODS A total of 324 patients with first-episode depression aged 18-50 years were recruited for our study. Vitamin D levels were recorded, and PHQ-9 scale evaluation was performed in different seasons. Seasonal variations in vitamin D levels and depressive symptoms were examined. RESULTS The cohort comprised 77 males and 247 females. 98.1% of patients had insufficient or deficient vitamin D levels. The median vitamin D level was 12 ng/mL; 14.5 ng/mL in summer and 13 ng/mL in autumn, which was significantly higher than 9 ng/mL in spring, and the correlation between vitamin D level and PHQ-9 score was more significant in spring but not in summer and autumn. LIMITATIONS Our study used cross-sectional data and could not examine the causal relationship of the vitamin D level and depressive symptoms. There are also some possible influencing factors, such as the dietary habits, outdoor sports, and the use of sunscreen were not investigated. CONCLUSION Observational data showed that the vitamin D level of depression is lower than the normal (30 ng/mL), and it is closely related to depressive symptoms in spring. The seasonal variations in vitamin D levels might play a critical role in Chinese patients with first-episode depression.

Abstract
The etiopathogenesis of mental disorders is not fully understood and accumulating evidence support that clinical symptomatology cannot be assigned to a single gene mutation, but it involves several genetic factors. More specifically, a tight association between genes and environmental risk factors, which could be mediated by epigenetic mechanisms, may play a role in the development of mental disorders. Several data suggest that epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, post-translational histone modification and interference of microRNA (miRNA) or long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) may modify the severity of the disease and the outcome of the therapy. Indeed, the study of these mechanisms may help to identify patients particularly vulnerable to mental disorders and may have potential utility as biomarkers to facilitate diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This article summarizes the most relevant preclinical and human data showing how epigenetic modifications can be central to the therapeutic efficacy of antidepressant and/or antipsychotic agents, as possible predictor of drugs response.

Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder that occurs all over the world with treatment resistance commonly seen in clinical practice. Ketamine exhibits an antidepressant that is more often used in the case of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in MDD and BP. Research emphasizes that a healthy diet and the nutrients it contains can lower the risk of developing depression and form a strategy that supports conventional treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the patients’ diet and to analyze the effect of ketamine on food intake among patients with TRD. The study involved 15 patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and 15 healthy volunteers. The data required for the analysis were collected using the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and 4-day food diaries. The study group was statistically significantly less likely to consume milk and plain milk beverages, plain white cheese, wholemeal bread, various vegetables, wine, and drinks. Our results show several disorders in the eating habits of patients with treatment–resistant depression. After the administration of ketamine, the patients consumed significantly less protein, fats, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), fiber, tryptophan, vitamins, and minerals compared to the control group. There is a lack of research describing the effects of ketamine on nutrition. In order to confirm the results of the study, more participants are required, and the assessment of food diaries filled in at the patient’s home with a longer interval after the last dose of ketamine as well.

Abstract
Evidence suggests the pivotal role of vitamin D in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) via its effects on the brain. Gender differences exist in both depression and vitamin D level. Our objective was to investigate the association between gender, vitamin D, clinical manifestations, and functional network connectivity in a large sample of MDD patients and healthy controls. Resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 122 patients and 119 controls, with independent component analysis adopted to examine large-scale inter- and intranetwork functional connectivity. Serum concentration of vitamin D (SCVD) and clinical manifestations were also assessed. MDD patients exhibited lower SCVD than controls in females but not males. Moreover, we identified a female-specific association between lower SCVD and poorer cognitive performance. Concurrently, MDD-related functional network connectivity changes were correlated with SCVD in females as well as depression and anxiety symptoms in female patients. Remarkably, MDD- and SCVD-related functional network connectivity alterations mediated the associations between SCVD and cognition in females. Aside from providing evidence for a female-specific neurobiological mechanism whereby low vitamin D might contribute to MDD and its associated clinical characteristics, our findings inform a novel conceptualization that adjuvant vitamin D supplementation therapy may yield clinical benefits in improving treatment outcomes in female patients with MDD.

Abstract
Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, and, if left unmanaged, it can increase the risk for suicide. The evidence base on the determinants of depression is fragmented, which makes the interpretation of the results across studies difficult. The objective of this study is to conduct a thorough synthesis of the literature assessing the biological, psychological, and social determinants of depression in order to piece together the puzzle of the key factors that are related to this condition. Titles and abstracts published between 2017 and 2020 were identified in PubMed, as well as Medline, Scopus, and PsycInfo. Key words relating to biological, social, and psychological determinants as well as depression were applied to the databases, and the screening and data charting of the documents took place. We included 470 documents in this literature review. The findings showed that there are a plethora of risk and protective factors (relating to biological, psychological, and social determinants) that are related to depression; these determinants are interlinked and influence depression outcomes through a web of causation. In this paper, we describe and present the vast, fragmented, and complex literature related to this topic. This review may be used to guide practice, public health efforts, policy, and research related to mental health and, specifically, depression.

Abstract
The use of vitamin D3 along with traditional therapy opens up new prospects for increasing the adaptive capacity of nerve cells to the effects of a wide range of stress factors, including hypoxia-ischemic processes. However, questions about prophylactic and therapeutic doses of vitamin D3 remain controversial. The purpose of our study was to analyze the effects of vitamin D3 at different concentrations on morpho-functional characteristics of neuron-glial networks in hypoxia modeling in vitro. We showed that a single administration of vitamin D3 at a high concentration (1 µM) in a normal state has no significant effect on the cell viability of primary neuronal cultures; however, it has a pronounced modulatory effect on the functional calcium activity of neuron-glial networks and causes destruction of the network response. Under hypoxia, the use of vitamin D3 (1 µM) leads to total cell death of primary neuronal cultures and complete negation of functional neural network activity. In contrast, application of lower concentrations of vitamin D3 (0.01 µM and 0.1 µM) caused a pronounced dose-dependent neuroprotective effect during the studied post-hypoxic period. While the use of vitamin D3 at a concentration of 0.1 µM maintained cell viability, preventive administration of 0.01 µM not only partially preserved the morphological integrity of primary neuronal cells but also maintained the functional structure and activity of neuron-glial networks in cultures. Possible molecular mechanisms of neuroprotective action of vitamin D3 can be associated with the increased expression level of transcription factor HIF-1α and maintaining the relationship between the levels of BDNF and TrkB expression in cells of primary neuronal cultures.
