Assessment of Bonding Effectiveness of Adhesive Materials to Tooth Structure using Bond Strength Test Methods: A Review of Literature

Photoactivated rose bengal-doped TiO2 nanoparticles modified fifth-generation adhesive on the survival rate of Streptococcus mutants and mechanical properties of tooth-colored restorative material to carious dentin

Assessment of the antimicrobial, micro tensile bond strength (μTBS), and degree of conversion (DC) of fifth-generation adhesive modified using photoactivated 0.5% rose bengal (RB) and photoactivated RB-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) in different concentrations (2% and 5%) as compared with the unmodified adhesive bonded to the carious affected dentin (CAD). Forty mandibular molars with caries progression up to the middle third of the dentin, as per the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) score of 4 and 5 were included. Specimens were divided into four groups based on etch and rinse adhesive (ERA) modification group 1: unmodified ERA, group 2: photoactivated 0.5% RB photosensitizer (PS) modified ERA, group 3: photoactivated RB-doped 2 wt% TiO2NPs adhesive, group 4: photoactivated RB-doped 5 wt% TiO2NPs adhesive. Followed by adhesive and composite restoration on the CAD surface. All the specimens were thermocycled and an assessment of μTBS and failure pattern analysis was performed. The antibacterial potency of RB and RB-doped TiO2NPs (2% and 5%) followed by their activation using visible light against Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) were tested. The survival rate of S.mutans was assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The analysis of μTBS involved the use of ANOVA, followed by a post-hoc Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) multiple comparisons test. Group 1 (Unmodified ERA) (0.52 ± 0.31 CFU/mL) treated samples unveiled the highest means of bacterial survival and lowest μTBS (11.32 ± 0.63 MPa). Nevertheless, group 4: photoactivated RB-doped 5 wt% TiO2NPs adhesive displayed the lowest outcomes of S.mutans survival (0.11 ± 0.02 CFU/mL) and highest bond strength (18.76 ± 1.45 MPa). The photoactivated RB-doped 2 wt% TiO2NPs in adhesive demonstrated promising enhancements in both μTBS and antibacterial efficacy against S.mutans. However, it is noteworthy that this modification led to a decrease in the DC of the adhesive. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Unmodified ERA-treated samples unveiled the highest bacterial survival and the lowest μTBS. Photoactivated RB-doped 5 wt% TiO2NPs adhesive displayed the lowest S.mutans survival rate and highest bond strength. DC decreased with an increase in concentration of TiO2.

Bond strength and marginal adaptation of resin composites and correlations with clinical results

OBJECTIVES

Due to innumerable confounding factors and a high number of types and brands of dental restorative materials, the clinical performance of restorative materials are sought predicted by various in vitro tests. However, only few such tests have been found to correlate well with clinical findings. Thus, the present study determined the in vitro dentin bond strength and marginal adaptation of Class II restorations and correlated the results to their clinical outcomes.

METHODS

Dentin bond strength (µTBS and µSBS) and marginal gap formation of Class II restorations (replica technique and SEM) were measured after 24 h and 6 m water storage using eight combinations of adhesive and resin composite. Clinical outcomes (mean survival time, Hazard Ratio, annual failure rate; n = 10.695) were gained from a data set of a retrospective multicenter study of direct restorations.

RESULTS

Significant differences were found for dentin bond strength and marginal gap formation between the restorative material groups, and negative effects of long-term storage were observed. µTBS correlated significantly with certain clinical outcomes of Class I restorations, while µSBS correlated with certain clinical outcomes of Class II, III, IV and V restorations. Marginal gap formation in enamel and number of paramarginal fractures correlated with certain clinical outcomes of Class II restorations.

SIGNIFICANCE

Using the same restorative materials in vitro as in vivo, gave significant, but weak correlations between in vitro bond strength or marginal adaptation and clinical outcomes, lending support to the use of in vitro tests in early stages of material selection.

Prolonged post-washing in ethanol decreases bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the effect of post-washing duration and crown thickness on the bond strength between additively manufactured crown materials and dental cement in vitro.

METHODS

Rectangular-shaped specimens of two thicknesses (1.5 and 2.0 mm) were additively manufactured from permanent VarseoSmile Crown (VC) and long-term temporary NextDent (ND) materials. The specimens were post-washed (n = 160) in ethanol for 5 min, 10 min, 1 h, and 8 h then cemented with dual-cure resin cement. Twenty PMMA (TC) were milled as a control. A chevron-notch test was performed to measure the maximum load until failure (N). Interfacial bond strength (J/m2) was calculated and statistically analysed. The mode of failure was analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

RESULTS

There was a significant difference in the bond strength between all groups (p < 0.01). VC at 1.5mm thickness post-washed for 10 min showed the highest mean bond strength (1.77 ±0.96 J/m2) while VC at 2.0mm thickness post-washed for 8 h showed the lowest (0.22 ±0.10 J/m2). Exposure to ethanol for 8 h resulted in lower bond strength. Within the type of material, there were no differences in bond strength between the thicknesses when post-washed for the same duration.

CONCLUSIONS

Prolonged post-washing of AM crown materials can significantly decrease the bond strength to resin cement. There were no differences between the permanent and long-term temporary AM materials. When post-washed for 5 min, AM materials observed comparable or higher bond strength values compared to PMMA.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The output of this research serves as a guide for dental practitioners, emphasising the importance of adhering to correct post-washing procedures for optimal bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials.

Factors influencing the bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials in dentistry: A systematic review of in vitro studies

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate how different interventions can impact the bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials after cementation.

DATA/SOURCES

Four online databases Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched up to January 2023. Inclusion criteria were English-language publications, full-text, and in vitro studies only. Exclusion criteria were studies that did not assess the bonding of an additively manufactured crown material to cement or did not conduct any bond strength tests. An assessment of risk of bias was done in accordance with a modified Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) checklist. Each study was analysed and compared based on the interventions and bond strength results.

STUDY SELECTION

Six studies satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria, five of which evaluated photopolymerised resin and one that tested zirconia manufacturing via 3D printing. All studies observed a low risk of bias. The interventions applied included the type of surface pretreatments, airborne-particle abrasion pressure, cement type, taper of crown, and artificial aging. Three studies compared the bonding performance to milled materials.

CONCLUSIONS

The bond strength of crown materials additively manufactured from photopolymers presented high values and are comparable to milled materials. The systematic review demonstrated there was no definite superior cement type, but airborne-particle abrasion with alumina was generally recommended. There is a clear gap in the literature regarding the bond strength of additively manufactured crowns. Therefore, further research is necessary to evaluate its clinical applicability for permanent restorations.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Factors influencing the bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials should be evaluated so dental professionals can adopt procedures that promote the strongest bond.

Effect of Immediate Dentin Sealing on the Bonding Performance of Indirect Restorations: A Systematic Review

The popular immediate dentin sealing (IDS) technique is used to improve the bond strength of indirect restorations. This systematic review assessed whether bond strength is affected by the type of aging conditions, bonding agents, flowable resin composites, impression materials, temporary materials, and/or resin cement used within the IDS procedure. A comprehensive database search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Ovid Medline, Web of Sciences, Cochrane Library, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, and ProQuest was carried out up to 30 January 2024 without publication year or language limitations. Only in vitro full-texts regarding the effect of IDS on bond strength were included, and the quality of their methods was assessed via a Risk of Bias (RoB) test. In total, 1023 pertinent studies were initially found, and 60 articles were selected for review after screening for the title, abstract, and full texts. IDS application improves the bond strength of indirect restorations to dentin and reduces the negative effects of temporary materials on the bond durability of final indirect restorations. Filled dentin bonding agents or combinations with flowable resin composite are preferred to protect the IDS layer from conditioning procedures.

The Impact of Silver Diamine Fluoride Only or Simultaneously With Potassium Iodide Treatment on the Bond Durability of Resin Composite Material on Primary Teeth

We aim to evaluate the bond strength between resin composite and primary demineralized dentin, pretreated with silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and simultaneous SDF with potassium iodide (KI) after thermal aging. In this in vitro study, human carious-free primary molars were randomly assigned into three groups and prepared by exposing the superficial dentin. The primary dentin of each molar was demineralized. The first group (the control) received saline treatment before bond application. SDF was pretreated for the second group, whereas SDF and KI were used for the third. After that, the pretreated dentin was immediately built with resin composite bonded with a universal adhesive and kept wet for 24 hours. Then, the pretreated molars were prepared into beam specimens for microtensile bond strength (µTBS), 16 for each group, and subjected to thermal aging. Lastly, they were tested using a universal testing machine, and the resulting data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test. It was found that the SDF-KI group had a significant difference with both the control and SDF groups (p < 0.05), while the control and SDF groups showed no significant differences (p = 0.310). The SDF-KI group had the highest mean value of 11.73 ± 4.39 megapascal (MPa). In contrast, the control group had the lowest mean value of 9.31 ± 3.41 MPa. Post hoc pairwise comparison results showed that SDF-KI pretreatment had a significantly higher strength value than the control and SDF groups. Pretreatment of demineralized primary dentin with SDF-KI does not negatively affect the immediate loading of resin composite. However, under the limitation of this study, KI application after SDF pretreatment is recommended to enhance the bond's durability of resin composite to demineralized dentin.

Shear bond strength between conventional composite resin and alkasite-based restoration used in sandwich technique: An in vitro study

Aim

The success of layered restorations necessitates the utilization of an improved restorative material compatible with composite restorations. Therefore, in this line of research, the strength of adhesion of conventional resin-based dental composite to different filling materials was tested.

Materials and Methods

Conventional composite resin was bonded to four restorative materials (Group I: conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC), Group II: resin-modified glass ionomer cement, Group III: flowable composite, and Group IV: Cention-N) received no surface treatment (Subgroup A: control), sandblasting using 50-µm aluminum oxide particles (Subgroup B), sandblasting and resin adhesive (Subgroup C), acid etch and resin adhesive (Subgroup D), or self-etch resin adhesive (Subgroup E). After 24 h, the strength of adhesion between the conventional composite resin and the other tested filling materials was estimated by using a universal testing machine and compared using one-factor analysis of variance and Tukey's method.

Results

The conventional GIC had the minimum values of adhesion strength while the flowable composite and Cention-N had the maximum values of adhesion strength (P < 0.05). The treatment of the used restorative materials with sandblasting and resin adhesive boosted the adhesion strength (P < 0.05). The surface treatment of GIC-based materials with either acid etch and resin bonding agent or self-etch resin bonding agent boosted the adhesion strength (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Cention-N sandblasted and coated with resin adhesive before the application of conventional composite resin in layered restorations is a potential alternative to GIC-based restorations and flowable composite.

Delayed vs. immediate placement of restorative materials over Biodentine and RetroMTA: a micro-shear bond strength study

BACKGROUND

The aim of the present study was to investigate the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of various restorative materials applied on two different fast-setting calcium silicate-based materials and to evaluate the effect of restoration time on µSBS.

METHODS

A total of 180 acrylic blocks with a cavity in the center were randomly divided into 2 main groups according to the capping material to be used (Biodentine or RetroMTA). The specimens were also randomly divided into 3 groups according to the restoration time (3 min, 12 min, 24 h). After the specified waiting periods, glass hybrid material (EQUIA Forte HT), resin composite (Filtek Z550) and light-cured calcium silicate material (Theracal LC) were placed on the specimens with tygon tubes. The specimens were kept for 24 h and then subjected to µSBS test. Statistical analysis was performed by 3-way ANOVA followed by Tukey test for pairwise comparisons (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

There is a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the µSBS values obtained by applying resin composite on RetroMTA after different setting times (24 h > 12 min > 3 min). The µSBS obtained for the Biodentine-resin composite at the end of the 3 min setting time is significantly lower (p < 0.05) than the µSBS values at 12 min and 24 h. For both calcium silicate cements, at the end of all time periods, the µSBS obtained when resin composite was applied at the end was higher than the other materials (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

For Biodentine-resin composite bonding, the manufacturer's recommendation of 12 min can be considered an appropriate time, whereas for RetroMTA-resin composite bonding, the µSBS increased as the waiting time increased. Regardless of the waiting time, it is recommended to prefer direct composite resin restoration over Biodentine and RetroMTA.

Optimizing Dental Bond Strength: Insights from Comprehensive Literature Review and Future Implications for Clinical Practice

This review examines the modifying factors affecting bond strength in various bonding scenarios, particularly their relevance to the longevity of dental restorations. Understanding these factors is crucial for improving clinical outcomes in dentistry. Data were gathered from the PubMed database, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar resources, covering studies from 1992 to 2022. The findings suggest that for dentin-resin bonds, minimizing smear layers and utilizing MMP inhibitors to prevent hybrid layer degradation are essential. In the case of resin-resin bonds, reversing blood contamination is possible, but preventing saliva contamination is more challenging, underscoring its critical importance during clinical procedures. Additionally, while pretreatment on ceramics has minimal impact on bond strength, the influence of specific colorings should be carefully considered in treatment planning. This comprehensive review highlights that although established practices recognize significant bond strength factors, ongoing research provides valuable insights to enhance the clinical experience for patients. Once confirmed through rigorous experimentation, these emerging findings should be swiftly integrated into dental practice to improve patient outcomes.

Machine Learning Analysis of Microtensile Bond Strength of Dental Adhesives

Dental adhesives provide retention to composite fillings in dental restorations. Microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test is the most used laboratory test to evaluate bonding performance of dental adhesives. The traditional approach for developing dental adhesives involves repetitive laboratory measurements, which consumes enormous time and resources. Machine learning (ML) is a promising tool for accelerating this process. This study aimed to develop ML models to predict the µTBS of dental adhesives using their chemical features and to identify important contributing factors for µTBS. Specifically, the chemical composition and µTBS information of 81 dental adhesives were collected from the manufacturers and the literature. The average µTBS value of each adhesive was labeled as either 0 (if <36 MPa) or 1 (if ≥36 MPa) to denote the low and high µTBS classes. The initial 9-feature data set comprised pH, HEMA, BisGMA, UDMA, MDP, PENTA, filler, fluoride, and organic solvent (OS) as input features. Nine ML algorithms, including logistic regression, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, decision trees and tree-based ensembles, and multilayer perceptron, were implemented for model development. Feature importance analysis identified MDP, pH, OS, and HEMA as the top 4 contributing features, which were used to construct a 4-feature data set. Grid search with stratified 10-fold cross-validation (CV) was employed for hyperparameter tunning and model performance evaluation using 2 metrics, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and accuracy. The 4-feature data set generated slightly better performance than the 9-feature data set, with the highest AUC score of 0.90 and accuracy of 0.81 based on stratified CV. In conclusion, ML is an effective tool for predicting dental adhesives with low and high µTBS values and for identifying important chemical features contributing to the µTBS. The ML-based data-driven approach has great potential to accelerate the discovery of new dental adhesives and other dental materials.

Argon Plasma Treatment Effects on the Micro-Shear Bond Strength of Lithium Disilicate with Dental Resin Cements

The low bond strength of lithium disilicate (LD) ceramics to dental resin cements remains a critical issue for dental applications because it leads to frequent replacement and causes tooth tissue destruction and consumption. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of atmospheric non-thermal argon plasma (NTP) treatment on LD to improve its micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) with dental resin cements because LD mostly experiences shear stress for its commonly used dental applications as crowns or veneers. Argon plasma treatment was performed on hydrofluoric (HF) acid-etched LD surfaces, and then commercial resin cements were subsequently applied to the treated LD surfaces. The plasma treatment significantly reduced the water contact angle of the LD surface to less than 10° without changing the surface morphology. The μSBS test was performed with cement-bonded LD samples after 24 h and 30 days, as well as after 1000 cycles of thermal cycling. The test results show that, as compared with the untreated controls, 300 s of plasma treatment significantly improved the LD-resin cement bond strength by 59.1%. After 30 days of storage in DI water and 1000 cycles of thermal cycling, the plasma-treated LD samples show 84.2% and 44.8% higher bond strengths as compared to the control samples, respectively. The plasma treatment effect on LD surfaces diminished rapidly as the bond strength decreased to 25.5 MPa after aging in the air for 1 day prior to primer and cement application, suggesting that primers should be applied to the LD surfaces immediately after the plasma treatment. These results demonstrate that, when applied with caution, plasma treatment can activate LD surfaces and significantly improve the SBS of LD with dental resin cements in both short-term and long-term periods.

Bond Strength of Zirconia Ceramics to Dentin Using Two Resin Cements: Influence of Dentin Conditioning.. [DOI: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-3067702/v1] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0]

Background Dentin adhesion has difficult challenge compared to enamel adhesion. The purpose of the current study was to assess the impact of different dentin conditioning methods and two different resin cements on bond strength of zirconia ceramics to dentin. Methods A total of 64 zirconia discs were fabricated using CAD/CAM technology according to the desired dimensions (8mm diameter ×3mm thickness). A total of 64molars mounted in plastic rings with acrylic resin were prepared by exposing flat coronal dentin surfaces by removing the occlusal enamel and superficial dentin. The prepared molars were divided into 4 main groups (n = 16) according to dentin surface treatment; Dentin left as cutted, treated with EDTA, treated with Polyacrylic Acid (PAA), treated with self-etch adhesive. Each main group was subdivided into 2 subgroups (n = 8) according to luting cement used. One of the subgroups, zirconia discs were bonded to conditioned dentin surface using adhesive resin cement (VITA ADIVA® F-CEM). The other subgroup was bonded using self-adhesive resin cement (Calibra®Universal). After bonding, all specimens were stored in water bath at 37⁰C for 6 months followed by 10.000 thermal cycles. After artificial aging, all bonded specimens underwent shear bond strength testing using universal testing machine. The data was parametric and normally distributed. Two-way ANOVA was used to test significant difference in shear stress between cements and between surface treatments followed by post hoc Tukey test for correction of p value resulted from multiple comparisons. P is significant if < 0.05 at confidence interval 95%. Results There was a significant difference in shear bond strength between surface treatments. The highest shear bond strength was reported with Self-etch adhesive, followed by PAA, then EDTA surface treatments, and the lowest shear bond strength was reported with as cutted dentin. Also,There was a significant difference between each two surface treatments except between PAA and EDTA for adhesive resin cement group. Conclusion Define dentin surface treatment with self etch adhesive is recommended before bonding zirconia restoration overall the conditioning materials, followed by PAA and EDTA. Specially with self-adhesive resin cement (Calibra universal cement).

Phosphoric Acid Etch Partially Restores the Initial Bond Strength of Composite to Silver Diamine Fluoride-Treated Enamel Using Universal Adhesives

BACKGROUND

Restoring bonding composite to silver diamine fluoride (SDF)-treated enamel is challenging. This study investigates if phosphoric acid etch restores composite bond strength to SDF-treated enamel using universal adhesives.

METHODS

Twenty-four recently extracted permanent teeth were randomly divided into 4 (2 experimental (SDF) and 2 control (CTR)) groups: SDF+Water: SDF (1 min) then water rinse (15 mL); CTR+Water: no treatment and water rinse (15 mL); SDF+Etch+Water: SDF (1 min), 35% phosphoric acid (40 s) then water rinse (15 mL); CTR+Etch+Water no treatment, 35% phosphoric acid (40 s) then water rinse (15 mL). The enamel surface in all the groups was bonded (All-Bond Universal) to 4-5 mm composite blocks (Z-250). Each sample was sectioned, and 6-8 beams (1 mm × 1 mm) were selected. The micro-tensile bond strength was measured by dividing the micro-tensile force peak by the adhesive surface area. Univariate ANOVA and Chi-square were used for between-group comparisons with p < 0.05.

RESULTS

SDF+Water had significantly lower tensile strength compared to all the groups (p < 0.05). Although no difference was found in the tensile strength between the SDF+Etch+Water and the CTR+Etch+Water, the SDF+Etch+Water had significantly more adhesive failures compared to the CTR+Etch+Water (p = 0.047).

CONCLUSIONS

While phosphoric acid etch seems to restore the initial composite bond strength to SDF-treated enamel, the long-term success of composite restorations bonded to SDF-treated enamel may need further investigation.

Comparison of Shear Bond Strength and Microleakage between Activa™ Bioactive Restorative™ and Bulk-Fill Composites-An In Vitro Study

Bioactive materials have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional restorative materials as part of more conservative dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of a new bioactive restorative material, two bulk-fill restorative composites, and a conventional composite at 24 h, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks. Three hundred and sixty molars and premolars were divided into four groups: ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE Restorative™, Filtek™ Bulk-Fill Restorative Composite, Tetric^® N-Ceram Bulk-Fill Composite, and G-aenial^® Composite. The normality of the data was determined with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, then the two-way ANOVA and Fisher's test were used for analyzing SBS data, and the Kruskal-Wallis and DSCF tests were conducted to analyze the microleakage. In the SBS test, there were no statistically significant differences between materials (p = 0.587), and the relation between material and time (p = 0.467), time points showed statistically significant differences (p = 0.016). As for the microleakage, statistically significant differences were found for all three time periods (p < 0.05), showing the conventional composite to have the lowest microleakage, followed by the bioactive material, and lastly the two bulk-fill composites. In conclusion, the new bioactive material has similar evaluated properties to bulk-fill composites (bond strength) and conventional composites (bond strength and microleakage) and can be used as an alternative restorative material.

Influence of the Application Time of Silane for the Bonding Performance between Feldspar or Lithium Disilicate Ceramics and Luting Resin Composites

A correct silanization time is essential for successful surface functionalization and sufficient bonding to dental ceramics. The shear bond strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate (LDS) and feldspar (FSC) ceramics and luting resin composite was investigated with respect to different silanization times, taking into account the physical properties of the individual surfaces. The SBS test was performed with a universal testing machine, and the fracture surfaces were evaluated by stereomicroscopy. The surface roughness of the prepared specimens was analyzed after etching. Changes in surface properties due to surface functionalization were evaluated by surface free energy (SFE) via contact angle measurement. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to determine the chemical binding. The roughness and SBS of the control group (no silane, etched) were higher for FSC than for LDS. Regarding the SFE, the dispersive fraction increased and the polar fraction decreased after silanization. FTIR confirmed the presence of silane on the surfaces. The SBS of LDS showed a significant increase from 5 to 15 s, depending on the silane and luting resin composite. For FSC, cohesive failure was observed for all samples. For LDS specimens, a silane application time of 15 to 60 s is recommended. Based on clinical conditions, no difference between the silanization times was observed for FSC specimens, indicating that etching alone produces sufficient bonding.

Bond strength of various post-core restorations with different lengths and diameters following cycle loading

PURPOSE

This in vitro study aims to evaluate the bonding strengths of Polyether ether ketone (PEEK), Polyether ketone (PEKK), Fiber, and Zirconia (ZrO₂) post-core restorations with posts in different diameter and length following chewing simulator.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Endodontic treatment was performed on 256 intact maxillary central teeth. The test specimens were prepared in four groups according to the types of materials: Glass fiber post-composite core (FB-n:64), Zirconia post-core (Zr-n:64), PEEK post-core (PE-n:64), and PEKK post-core (PK-n:64). The groups were divided into four subgroups according to diameter and length (n:16): Group 1: 10 mm length 1.75 mm diameter, Group 2: 10 mm length 1.5 mm diameter, Group 3: 7 mm length 1.75 mm diameter, Group 4: 7 mm length 1.5 mm diameter. Custom PEKK, PEEK, Zirconia post-cores, and Zirconia crowns were milled on the CAD/CAM. The post-cores and crowns were cemented to the teeth with dual-cure resin cement. After that, all subgroups were divided into control and cyclic loading groups. During the cycling, the control test group was kept in distilled water at 37±1^oC before the push-out test. Half of the specimens were loaded with 250,000 cycles and 50 N with a chewing simulator. All test specimens had 1.5 mm sections taken from their roots. Then, the push-out test was applied to these sections for bond strength. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test, Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis's test, and Chi-Square. The statistical significance level was determined as 0.05.

RESULTS

The bond strength of all test groups decreased after the cycling loading. The bond strength values of zirconia posts showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). The 10 mm length 1.75 mm diameter posts made of Zirconium had the highest bond strength observed in all control and cyclic loading groups of test specimens (9.74 MPa-6.25 MPa). The PEEK test specimens with a 7 mm length and 1.75 mm diameter showed the weakest bond strength in all control and cyclic loading groups (5.44 MPa-3.37 MPa). The average of the cervical region's bond strength values was statistically significantly higher than the apical region (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of this study, one-piece custom-milled Zirconia post-cores appear promising, as they perform well under functional forces, especially in the anterior region. In addition, custom-milled PEKK post-cores might be considered a suitable alternative to prefabricated fiber-reinforced posts.

Effect of different root canal irrigants on push-out bond strength of two novel root-end filling materials

BACKGROUND

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate push-out bond strength of different root-end filling materials using various irrigant solutions.

METHODS

A push-out bond strength test was performed to evaluate the bond strength of two experimental root-end filling materials: namely, nano-hybrid mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cement filled with 20% weight nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) fillers compared to conventional MTA. The irrigant solutions employed were sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in concentrations 1%, 2.5% and 5.25% and 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) followed by application of 17% ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA). A freshly extracted sixty single-rooted human maxillary central incisors were used. The crowns were removed, the canal apex was widened to simulate immature teeth. Each type of irrigation protocols was performed. After application and setting of the root-end filling materials, a slice of one mm thickness was cut transversely from the apical end of each root. Specimens were stored for 1 month in artificial saliva and were subjected to a push-out test to evaluate the shear bond strength. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test.

RESULTS

The experimental nano-hybrid MTA showed the highest significant push-out bond strength values when irrigated by NaOCl at several concentrations (1%, 2.5% and 5.25%) (P< 0.05). Meanwhile, irrigation with 2% CHX resulted in highest bond strength values in nano-hybrid white MTA (18 MPa) and PMMA filled with 20% weight nHA (17.4 MPa) with nonsignificant difference between them (p = 0.25). In each root-end filling material, irrigation with 2% CHX led to the highest significant bond strength, followed by NaOCl 1%, while the least significant bond strength was produced after irrigation with NaOCl 2.5% and 5.25% (P< 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Considering the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that the application of 2% CXH and 17% EDTA provides superior push-out bond strength to root canal dentin compared with irrigation with NaOCl irrigants and 17% EDTA, experimental nano-hybrid MTA root-end filling material provides enhanced shear bond strength than conventional micron-sized MTA root-end filling material.

Comparison of the Micro-Shear Bond Strength of Resin Cements to CAD/CAM Glass Ceramics with Various Surface Treatments

This study aimed to compare the effect of acid etching, sandblasting, or silica coating on the micro-shear bond strength of dual-cured resin cements to computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) glass ceramic materials. Feldspathic, lithium disilicate, and zirconia-reinforced CAD/CAM ceramics were divided into four groups: control group (C), no surface treatment; hydrofluoric (HF) group, 5% HF acid-etched; sandblasting (SB) group, abraded with 50 µm aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) particles; silica-coated (CJ) group, abraded with 30 µm silica-modified Al₂O₃ particles. Roughness values were obtained by using a profilometer. The cements were condensed on the surface-treated specimens and a micro-shear bond test was conducted. The ceramic material (p < 0.001) and surface treatment type (p < 0.001) significantly affected the micro-shear bond strength values. HF acid etching can be recommended for the surface pretreatment of feldspathic, lithium disilicate, and zirconia-reinforced CAD/CAM ceramics. Better bond strengths can be obtained with HF acid etching than with sandblasting and silica coating.

Comparison of Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets Onto the Tooth Enamel of 120 Freshly Extracted Adult Bovine Medial Lower Incisors Using 4 Adhesives: A Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Adhesive, a Composite Adhesive, a Liquid Composite Adhesive, and a One-Step Light-Cured Adhesive

BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the bond strength of orthodontic brackets onto the tooth enamel of 120 freshly extracted adult bovine medial lower incisors using 4 adhesives: a resin-modified glass ionomer adhesive, a composite adhesive, a liquid composite adhesive, and a one-step light-cured adhesive. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group (120 freshly extracted bovine medial lower incisors) was divided into equal subgroups depending on the type of adhesive used to fix the brackets to the tooth enamel (n=30), and then according to the observation time (n=10). Orthodontic brackets were fixed onto the tooth enamel for 24 hours (T1), 3 months (T2), and 6 months (T3) using 4 types of adhesives: resin-modified glass ionomer adhesive Fuji Ortho LC, composite adhesive Transbond Plus Light Cure Band, flowable composite adhesive Transbond Supreme Low Viscosity, and a one-step light-cured adhesive GC Ortho Connect. Shear tests and fracture plane analyses were performed. RESULTS Statistically significant differences at time T1 were noted in the comparison of shear stress values when brackets were fixed with GC Ortho Connect adhesive compared to other adhesives (P<0.05), except for the Transbond Plus adhesive (P>0.05). At time T3, significant statistical differences occurred between GC Fuji Ortho LC and the other 3 adhesives (P<0.05). The fracture analysis showed that, regardless of the time function, adhesive-cohesive fractures without damage to the enamel were the most common for all the assessed materials. CONCLUSIONS Of the adhesives evaluated, GC Ortho Connect appears to be the most appropriate choice for bonding orthodontic brackets to the enamel surface.

Impact of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy on the bond-strength and penetration of endodontic sealers: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been used for the disinfection of root canals. Studies have been carried out on its effect on the bond-strength and penetration of endodontic sealers. The aim of this systematic review is to critically analyze the literature and summarize the outcomes of these studies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An electronic search was conducted on research databases PubMED/Medline, ISI Web of Knowledge, Embase, Scopus and Europe PMC using the following the medical subject headings (MeSH) terms and keywords: [((endodontic sealer) OR (endodontic sealant) OR (root canal sealer)) AND ((anti-microbial photodynamic therapy) OR (laser-assisted) OR (light-assisted) OR (photosensitive dye) OR (photosensitizer)) AND ((bond-strength) OR (penetration))] for all literature published from inception to September 2022. Clinical studies, animal studies, laboratory investigations and case reports were included. Data was extracted and the quality of the included studies was assessed.

RESULTS

Of the 204 studies screen initially, 12 laboratory studies were included in this review. Majority of the outcomes revealed that aPDT does not have an adverse impact on the bond-strength or sealer penetration. Furthermore, AH Plus (an epoxy-based sealer) resulted in higher bond-strengths than other types of sealers (MTA Fillapex, Sealapex and Bioceramics). 11 studies were graded as having 'medium' quality and one study was graded as 'low'.

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of this review, aPDT does not have a significant impact on the bonding and penetration of endodontic sealers. Future studies should focus on standardization and optimization of aPDT procedures when assessing their impact on the interaction between sealers and dentine.

Evaluation of six different one-step universal adhesive systems in terms of dentin bond strength, adhesive interface characterization, surface tension, contact angle, degree of conversion and solvent evaporation after immediate and delayed use

OBJECTIVES

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of different waiting periods on resin-dentin bond strength (BS), degree of conversion (DC), contact angle (CA), surface tension (ST), solvent evaporation (weight loss) and the characteristics of adhesive interfaces of the current six universal adhesive resins (ARs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 216 caries-free human lower third molar teeth were used. Composite resin restorations were performed by applying six universal ARs in etch-and-rinse and self-etch mode on standardized dentin surfaces after 0, 5, and 30 min waiting time. Then, a micro-shear BS test, SEM examination and characterization of the adhesive interface were performed. In addition, DC, CA, ST, solvent evaporation of all tested ARs were evaluated.

RESULTS

The obtained data were statistically anaIyzed. The tested ARs did not show any statistical difference between 0 and 5 min evaluations in all parameters evaluated except for weight loss (p > 0.05). While the weight loss, ST and CA of all ARs increased in 30 min (p < 0.05), the BS, DC, thickness of the adhesive layer and the hybrid layer, resin tag length and number of resin tags varied according to the ARs used. When the ARs were used in etch-and-rinse mode, all the parameters evaluated also varied according to the AR used. Higher adhesive layer thickness and lower hybrid layer thickness were found in the self-etch mode (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

All of the adhesives tested can be safely used up to 30 min. This could also prevent economical loss caused by waste adhesive material.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

It is important to know how the bond strength, degree of conversion, adhesion, contact angle and surface tension properties of the adhesive resin waiting in the dispensing cup for a long time during clinical use are affected to make ideal restorations.

Influence of mechanical and chemical pre-treatments on the repair of a hybrid ceramic

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the influence of the respective mechanical and chemical pre-treatments on the composite repair of a CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic using a microtensile bond strength test (μTBS).

METHODS

15 CAD/CAM Blocks of Vita Enamic (VE) were randomly sectioned into three mechanical pre-treatments: (1.) Diamond bur (D), (2.) Airborne abrasion (A), (3.) Tribochemical silica coating (T) and subsequently five chemical pre-treatments: (1.) Clearfil SE Bond Bond (B; negative control), (2.) ESPE Sil (S), (3.) Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus (CPP), (4.) Clearfil Repair (CR) and (5.) Scotchbond Universal (SCB). Per block, n = 20 specimens were sawn. Half of the specimens were randomly selected and subjected to an immediate bond strength test, while the other half was subjected to artificial aging for 6 months 180 days at 37 °C and subsequent thermocycling of 5000 cycles. A μTBS was performed and data (MPa) were compared in one-way and two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD. Paired-t-test was used for artificial aging (α = 0.05). Debonded specimens were analyzed of for failure modes with a stereomicroscope (SEM).

RESULTS

The results of one-way ANOVA for the fifteen fastening procedures after aging indicated significant differences according to SCB-A and CPP-T. Two-way ANOVA after aging observed inferior bond strength for SCB. No differences were observed for mechanical pre-treatments. Artificial aging showed a significant reduction in bond strength on most of the fastening procedures.

SIGNIFICANCE

SCB showed the lowest bond strength values besides B, S, CPP, and CR. MDP and silane are both suitable for the repair of VE.

In vitro study on how antioxidant solutions affect enamel surface characteristics and bonding interface of ceramic laminate veneers luting after dental bleaching

PURPOSE

This in vitro study aimed to determine the effect of antioxidant solutions used after dental bleaching on the shear bond strength and adhesive interface sealing of ceramic laminate veneer luting. Additionally, effects on the enamel surface characteristics of hydrogen peroxide neutralization, surface energy, total free interaction energy, morphology, and chemical composition of enamel were assessed.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Total 127 bovine incisors were divided into experimental groups, according to the surface treatment (unbleached and bleached enamel), antioxidant types (control; 10% ascorbic acid and 10% α-tocopherol), and periods of luting of ceramic laminates (24 h and after 14 days). Shear bond strength was assessed using microtensile test before and after thermal cycling (5760 cycles, 5-55 °C) (n = 6). The sealing of the adhesive interface was assessed using a confocal laser scanning microscope (n = 3). Hydrogen peroxide neutralization analysis was performed using a spectrophotometer (n = 5). The surface energy and total free interaction energy (n = 10) were measured using an automatic goniometer, while enamel morphology and chemical composition were assessed by scanning eletron microscopy (n = 3). Shear bond strength and enamel surface properties data were subjected to ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Adhesive interface micrographs were evaluated by the inter-examiner Kappa test and subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

In general, thermal aging decreased the shear bond strength values of the luting agents to enamel (P < .05). The α-tocopherol solution was able to reverse the oxidizing effect from dental bleaching, increasing the shear bond strength values and preserving the integrity of the adhesive interface sealing (P < .05). Moreover, the α-tocopherol antioxidant agent promoted higher hydrogen peroxide neutralization after dental bleaching (P < .05). Dental bleaching influenced the enamel surface, decreasing the surface energy and total free interaction energy values (P < .05).

CONCLUSION

α-tocopherol was able to reverse the oxidizing effects of dental bleaching, improving the enamel surface properties, as well as the adhesion and interface sealing of ceramic laminate veneer restorations.

Development of low-shrinkage dental adhesives via blending with spiroorthocarbonate expanding monomer and unsaturated epoxy resin monomer

Polymerization shrinkage is one of the main drawbacks of dental resin adhesives. In this study, spiroorthocarbonate expanding monomer 3,9-diethyl-3,9-dimethylol -1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro-[5,5] undecane (DDTU) and unsaturated epoxy resin monomer Diallyl bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DBDE) were synthesized and utilized as anti-shrinkage-coupling additive of methacrylate-based adhesives. Polymerization process and physicochemical properties including double bond conversion, polymerization shrinkage, compatibility, mechanical performance, thermal stability, contact angle, shear bond strength and cytotoxicity were characterized. Results indicated that adhesives containing anti-shrinkage-coupling additive had reduced volume shrinkage, improved compatibility and enhanced shear bond strength. When the amount of additive was 20 wt%, the volume shrinkage was decreased by 45.8% (4.17 ± 0.32%) and the shear bond strength was increased by 49.6% (19.64 ± 0.99 MPa). The results also showed that the use of additive had no adversely affect on double bond conversion and cytotoxicity. Therefore, novel low-shrinkage resin adhesives were prepared via blending with spiroorthocarbonate expanding monomer and unsaturated epoxy resin monomer.

Impact of different pretreatments and attachment materials on shear bond strength between monolithic zirconia restorations and metal brackets

To investigate the influence of different pretreatment methods, attachment materials and artificial aging on shear bond strength (SBS) between monolithic zirconia and metal brackets. Zirconia substrates were pretreated with silica coated alumina (CoJet) and (1) clearfill ceramic primer plus (CF), (2) RelyX ceramic primer (RXP), (3) Futurabond U (FU). The brackets were bonded with (1) Transbond XT Adhesive (TB), (2) BrackFix Adhesive (BF), (3) bracepaste adhesive (BP). SBS was tested after 24 h, 500 thermal cycles, 90 d at 37 °C with a universal testing machine. SBS values reached from 8.3 to 16.9 MPa. The Weibull moduli ranged between 0.37 (RXP combined with BP after 90 d) and 7.42 (CF combined with TB after 24 h). The pretreatment with FU after 90 d, independent of the attachment material, and RXP with BF resulted in the lowest SBS values 8.3–9.9 MPa, the combination of RXP or CF with TB showed the highest (13.2–16.9 MPa) independent of aging. After FU pretreatment the proportion of ARI 1 and 0 was higher, of ARI 3 lower as after CF and RXP pretreatment. All tested combinations showed sufficiently high SBS values for clinical use. Pretreatment with FU presented the lowest values after 90 days.

Influence of 2% Chlorhexidine on the Bond Strength of Three Adhesive Systems on Primary Molars: An In Vitro Study

The hydrolysis of the collagen matrix by metalloproteinases (MMPs) is one of the paradigms that currently arouses most interest due to its close relationship with a decrease in bond strength (BS) and consequent restoration failure. Chlorhexidine 2% has demonstrated its ability to inhibit MMPs’ activity in the permanent dentition, improving the duration of resin–dentine, but there are few studies on deciduous dentition and its possible repercussions. Aim: To determine the influence of 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) as a dentine pretreatment on the BS of three adhesive systems on primary molars. Methods: 128 primary extracted molars were assigned to eight groups at random. BS in vitro was recorded by micropush-out test, and analyzed by two-way ANOVA. Results: BS values oscillated from 15.01 MPa to 20.41 MPa. There was no statistically relevant variation between the BS total mean of those adhesive groups that had received CHX pretreatment versus those that did not. Adper Prompt L-Pop was the self-etching adhesive with the best BS. Adper Scotchbond 1XT was the total-etch adhesive with the best BS values. Conclusions: Application of 2% chlorhexidine for 60 s as dentine pretreatment did not affect the immediate BS of several adhesive systems used in primary dentition.

Shear bond strength of resin bonded zirconia and lithium disilicate - effect of surface treatment of ceramics and dentin

Objectives:The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of ceramic surface pretreatment, effect of resin cement and dentin surface roughness on shear bond strength.

Methodology: Zirconia rods (n = 140) were randomly assigned to air born particle abrasion with aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) or hot etching with potassium hydrogen difluoride (KHF₂). Lithium disilicate rods (LDS; n = 50) etched with hydrofluoric acid served as reference material. In Part 1 of the study, ceramic rods were cemented to bovine dentin using 5 dual-polymerizing resin cements (Variolink Esthetic, Multilink Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent), Duo-Link (BISCO Dental), Panavia F2.0 (Kuraray Dental), RelyX Unicem (3 M)). Shear bond strength was tested and fracture morphology determined. In Part 2 of the study, test groups with the highest frequency of adhesive fractures between cement and dentin were selected for further bond strength testing with different surface roughness of dentin; ground with P1200 or P80 silicon carbide paper. Dentin samples were fractured vertically to the cemented surface and the adherence between cement and dentin was studied.

Results: The results of Part 1 showed that hot etching of zirconia significantly improved bond strength to Duo-Link cement. In Part 2, RelyX Unicem showed significantly higher bond strength to P1200 compared to P80 ground dentin. For Variolink Esthetic, bond strengths to P1200 and P80 ground dentin were similar. Adhesive fracture between cement and dentin dominated.

Conclusions: A smooth dentin surface (P1200) improved bond strength to RelyX Unicem. Surface roughness was not important for Variolink Esthetic.

Is the bond strength of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate lower than that of lithium disilicate? A systematic review and metaanalysis

PURPOSE

This study systematically reviewed the literature to compare the bond strength of resin composites with that of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) and lithium disilicate (LD).

STUDY SELECTION

This review was structured based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses (PRISMA 2020) statement. This study was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42021256900). Studies were searched via PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases without language or publication year limits. In vitro studies that evaluated the bond strength of the resin composites to ZLS and LD were included. The risk of bias in all the included articles was evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed using the Review Manager software (version 5.3, Cochrane Collaboration, Oxford, UK).

RESULTS

Of the 90 potentially related articles, the full texts of 16 articles were evaluated after screening. Finally, sevenstudies were included in the qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis. All the studies presented a medium risk of bias. The results showed no significant difference in bond strength between the ZLS and LD groups (P = 0.94, mean difference=0.08, and 95% confidence interval=-1.93 to 2.10). However, a significant difference was found in the subgroup analysis considering different types of aging treatments (P = 0.0008) and different types of bond strength tests (P < 0.00001).

CONCLUSION

The bond strength of resin composites was found to be similar to that of ZLS and LD, but different aging treatments and bond strength tests exhibited varying effects on the bond strength.

Micro versus Macro Shear Bond Strength Testing of Dentin-Composite Interface Using Chisel and Wireloop Loading Techniques

Shear bond strength (SBS) testing is a commonly used method for evaluating different dental adhesive systems. Failure mode analysis provides valuable information for better interpretation of bond strength results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of specimen dimension and loading technique on shear bond strength and failure mode results. Eighty macro and micro flowable composite cylindrical specimens of 1.8 and 0.8 mm diameter, respectively, and 1.5 mm length were bonded to dentinal substrate. Four study groups were created (n = 20): Macroshear wireloop, Gp1; Microshear wireloop, Gp2; Macroshear chisel, Gp3; and Microshear chisel, Gp4. They were tested for SBS using chisel and wireloop loading devices followed by failure mode analysis using digital microscopy and SEM. Two- and one-way ANOVA were used to compare stress at failure values of different groups while the Kruskal–Wallis test was used to compare between failure modes of the tested groups. Gp4 recorded the highest mean stress at failure 54.1 ± 14.1 MPa, and the highest percentage of adhesive failure in relation to the other groups. Specimen dimension and loading technique are important parameters influencing the results of shear bond strength. Micro-sized specimens and chisel loading are recommended for shear testing.

[Laboratory methods for measuring adhesive bond strength between restoration materials and hard tooth tissues]

THE AIM OF THE STUDY

Was to review laboratory methods measuring the bond strength of adhesive dental materials to hard tooth tissues. The paper points out the impact of test conditions on the measured strength of adhesive bond to dentine and enamel. Various in vitro studies are discussed, including the analyses of fracture surfaces and test-induced stresses. These studies are found to be helpful to identify particularities, advantages, and limitations of each approach. We present a systematic picture of available bond-strength data aimed at revealing general trends in adhesive performance. No clear superiority of any particular method for determining the bond strength between restoration materials and tooth tissues can be identified on the basis of reviewed literature. Therefore, no single universal approach can be at present proposed for determining the strength of adhesive bond.

Multifunctional Dental Composite with Piezoelectric Nanofillers for Combined Antibacterial and Mineralization Effects

After nearly seven decades of development, dental composite restorations continue to show limited clinical service. The triggering point for restoration failure is the degradation of the bond at the tooth-biomaterial interface from chemical, biological, and mechanical sources. Oral biofilms form at the bonded interfaces, producing enzymes and acids that demineralize hard tissues and damage the composite. Removing bacteria from bonded interfaces and remineralizing marginal gaps will increase restorations' clinical service. To address this need, we propose for the first time the use of piezoelectric nanoparticles of barium titanate (BaTiO₃) as a multifunctional bioactive filler in dental resin composites, offering combined antibacterial and (re)mineralization effects. In this work, we developed and characterized the properties of dental piezoelectric resin composites, including the degree of conversion and mechanical and physical properties, for restorative applications. Moreover, we evaluated the antibacterial and mineralization responses of piezoelectric composites in vitro. We observed a significant reduction in biofilm growth (up to 90%) and the formation of thick and dense layers of calcium phosphate minerals in piezoelectric composites compared to control groups. The antibacterial mechanism was also revealed. Additionally, we developed a unique approach evaluating the bond strength of dentin-adhesive-composite interfaces subjected to simultaneous attacks from bacteria and cyclic mechanical loading operating in synergy. Our innovative bioactive multifunctional composite provides an ideal technology for restorative applications using a single filler with combined long-lasting nonrechargeable antibacterial/remineralization effects.

Curvature-dependent shear bond strength of different attachment materials for orthodontic lingual indirect bonding

To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of different attachment materials used for lingual bonding, the influence of artificial aging and the radii of curvature of the enamel surface on SBS, 192 third molars were photographed to determine the radius of curvature of the oral surface. After phosphoric acid etching a cylindrical test piece was bonded to the oral enamel using a mold that was filled with a chemically curing (Maximum Cure, Transbond IDB Premix) or a dual-curing (Nexus NX3, RelyX Unicem2) attachment material. SBS was tested after 24 h, 500 thermal cycles or 90 days at 37 °C with a universal testing machine. Computed tomography scans were performed to determine the bonded surface and calculate SBS. Values ranged from 8.3 to 20.9 MPa. RelyX Unicem2 showed the highest SBS values at baseline, 500 thermal cycles and after 90 days (p < 0.001). Ninety days of wet storage significantly reduced SBS of Maximum Cure (p = 0.028). The radius of curvature correlated positively with SBS (r_s = 0.204, p = 0.005). The SBS of all attachment materials was sufficient for clinical use, even after artificial aging. RelyX Unicem2 showed almost twice as high SBS values as the other attachment materials.

Rheological Properties, Surface Microhardness, and Dentin Shear Bond Strength of Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cements Containing Methacrylate-Functionalized Polyacids and Spherical Pre-Reacted Glass Fillers

The aim of this study was to prepare experimental resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs) containing low levels of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) for pulp protection. Liquid and powder phases of the experimental RMGICs were polyacid functionalized with methacrylate groups and spherical pre-reacted glass fillers (SPG). Two types of liquid phase containing 0 wt. % HEMA (CM liquid) or 5 wt. % HEMA (CMH liquid) were formulated. The experimental RMGICs were prepared by mixing SPG fillers with CM liquid (F1) or CMH liquid (F2). Rheological properties were examined using a strain-controlled rheometer (n = 5). The Vickers microhardness (n = 5) and dentin shear bond strength (SBS) (n = 10) of the materials were tested. Commercial pulp protection materials (Vitrebond and TheraCal LC) were used as comparisons. The viscosity and surface microhardness of F1 (22 m Pa·s, 18 VHN) and F2 (18 m Pa·s, 16 VHN) were significantly higher than those of Vitrebond (6 mPa·s, 6 VHN) and TheraCal (0.1 mPa·s, 7 VHN). The SBS of F1 (10.7 MPa) and F2 (11.9 MPa) was comparable to that of Vitrebond (15.4 MPa) but higher than that of TheraCal LC (5.6 MPa). The addition of 5 wt. % HEMA showed no significant effect on viscosity, surface microhardness, or SBS of the experimental RMGICs. The experimental materials showed higher viscosity and microhardness but similar SBS when compared with the commercial RMGIC.

The influence of the resin-based cement layer on ceramic-dentin bond strength

The purpose of the study was to measure the cement thickness obtained when ceramic rods were luted to dentin and to analyze the relation between cement thickness and the previously published tensile bond strength of similar test specimens. In addition, the ISO standard 4049:2019 method was used to determine the film thickness of the used cements. Zirconia (n = 100) and lithium disilicate (n = 50) rods were cemented to bovine dentin using one of five different resin-based cements. The ceramic-dentin test specimens were cut into two slices and the cement thickness was measured using a scanning electron microscope and compared to the bond strength values of similar specimens already published. The mean cement thickness recorded for ceramic rods cemented to dentin was in the range 20-40 μm, which was larger than the cement film thickness found by the ISO method. The cement film thickness determined according to ISO standard methods did not concur with the results obtained when cementing ceramic rods to dentin. For cementing ceramic restorations, a cement thickness in the range 25-35 μm seems to be favorable for the bond strength.

The Effects of Amalgam Contamination and Different Surface Modifications on Dentin Shear Bond Strength When Using Different Adhesive Protocols

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of amalgam contamination, different surface treatments, and adhesive protocols on dentin shear bond strength (SBS) to bulk-fill composite resin material.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty teeth were fixed in molds, and the dentin was exposed and then polished. Sixty teeth were restored by amalgam and thermocycled to 10,000 cycles (5°C and 55°C, 30-second dwell time). The rest were restored with composite materials without amalgam predecessor. The samples were divided into G1 (with dentin pretreatment with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate), G2 (0.5 mm of dentin was removed), G3 (no surface modification), and G4 (samples were restored with bulk-fill composite). The bonded specimens were subdivided based on the adhesive protocol of the universal adhesive system used into etch-and-rinse and self-etch groups. Acid etching was done using 32% phosphoric acid. Composite resin was used for build-up using mold and glass. Specimens were cured and left for 24 h in distilled water at room temperature for polymerization reaction, underwent thermocycling for 5000 cycles, and were subjected to knife-edge shear bond testing. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and one-way analysis of variance followed by pairwise comparisons were used to analyze the results.

RESULTS

The highest mean SBS values were found in the control group where acid etching was used (24.46±2.24 MPa), followed by self-etching in the same group (21.92±2.54 MPa). Lower SBS values were associated with the amalgam-contaminated group. The lowest values were found in the dentin refreshment group when the self-etching mode was used (13.59±1.73 MPa). Chlorhexidine treatment improved the mean SBS value compared with the no treatment or dentin refreshment groups for both adhesive protocols.

CONCLUSION

Amalgam contamination may affect SBS values. Acid etching improved SBS for non-contaminated dentin. Chlorhexidine improved SBS for amalgam-contaminated dentin as a surface treatment but had no significant effect.

Adhesive strength of fiberglass posts treated with thio-urethane-based experimental silanes

Purpose:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesive bond strength of fiberglass posts treated with experimental silanes based on thio-urethane and submitted to thermo and mechanical cycles.

Materials and methods:

Bovine roots were divided into six groups: RX-RU2 (RelyX CP + RelyX U200); PETMP-HDDI-RU2 (PETMP-HDDI + RelyX U200); PETMP-BDI-RU2 (PETMP-BDI + RelyX U200); RX-RU (RelyX CP + RelyX Ultimate); PETMP-HDDI-RU (PETMP-HDDI + RelyX Ultimate); PETMP-BDI-RU (PETMP-BDI + RelyX Ultimate). One slice from each root third (n=10) was submitted to the push-out test and the values evaluated with R Program statistical analysis, while the failure pattern assessed in percentage.

Results:

Among root thirds, RX-RU2 promoted greater strength at the cervical and apical thirds; PETMP-HDDI-RU2 showed highest values at the three thirds; and PETMP-BDI-RU2 was strongest at the apical third. RX-RU presented higher strength at the apical third, and PETMP-HDDI-RU and PETMP-BDI-RU had similar values at the three thirds. In each root third, PETMP-HDDI-RU2 showed similar strength at all thirds, and similar strength at the apical third was observed for other associations. Mixed and adhesive failures predominated.

Conclusion:

Experimental silanes promoted different bond strength values in the adhesion of fiberglass posts to the root thirds, with better results for PETMP-HDDI silane. The root region did not influence the failure pattern and most slices showed mixed (MCDP) or adhesive (ADP) failure.

Flexural properties and dentin adhesion in recently developed self-adhesive bulk-fill materials

PURPOSE

This study investigated the flexural properties, shear bond strength (SBS) and interface to dentin of three recently developed self-adhesive bulk-fill materials.

METHODS

Bars of Surefil One (SO), Cention N (CN), Activa BioActive Restorative (AB) and EQUIA Forte HT Fil (EQUIA) were tested for flexural strength and flexural modulus in self-curing and light-curing modes. In addition, SBS to dentin was tested in specimens without pretreatment and after application of universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal). EQUIA was used as the control material.

RESULTS

The flexural properties were significantly better in light-curing mode for all materials except CN. CN had the highest SBS values after universal adhesive application (33.8 MPa), and SO had the highest SBS without pretreatment (20.9 MPa).

CONCLUSION

The mechanical and adhesive properties of these new materials varied widely.

Need for an alternative method to cement fiber-reinforced posts - A pushout bond strength analysis

Background:

The use of dissimilar materials used as posts, luting agents, and the core often makes the restorative procedure quite complicated, as each material demands its own technical process. Furthermore, it may not necessarily result in better collective physical properties.

Aim:

The aim of this study was to analyze the pushout bond strength of a zirconia-based core buildup material in cementing two fiber posts.

Methods:

Eighty single-rooted mandibular premolars were decoronated, endodontically treated, post space prepared, and randomly assigned to one of the following four groups: carbon fiber post luted with PermaCem 2.0, carbon fiber post luted with LuxaCore Z Dual, glass fiber post luted with PermaCem 2.0, and glass fiber post luted with LuxaCore Z Dual. Pushout bond strength was evaluated in a universal testing machine for each of the 2 ± 0.5 mm sections obtained from the samples (total 160 sections)

Statistical Analysis:

One-way ANOVA and post hoc tests were used for statistical analysis.

Results:

The glass fiber posts cemented with LuxaCore Z showed significantly higher pushout bond strength (P < 0.001).

Conclusion:

LuxaCore Z Dual-core build material was more effective as a luting agent for glass fiber post cementation.

Comparison of shear bond strengths with different bevel preparations for the reattachment of fractured fragments of maxillary central incisors

BACKGROUND/AIMS

Fractures of anterior teeth are a highly prevalent form of dental trauma. Among the various treatment options, reattachment of the fractured part to the remaining tooth has a lot of advantages. The aim of this study was to compare different bevel preparation techniques when reattaching fractured fragments to maxillary central incisors.

METHODS

This study was performed on 52 maxillary central incisors that were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups and 1 control group. In the control group, the repair was done by attaching the fractured fragment using bonding and composite resin without any bevel preparation. In the second and third groups, the bevel preparation was done to a depth of 0.5 mm before attachment of the fragment on the palatal side of the fracture and on the labial and palatal sides, respectively. In the fourth group, after tooth preparation, a 0.5 mm composite veneer was placed on the labial surface. The amount of force needed to refracture the tooth was measured with a universal testing machine, and shear bond strength was calculated in MPa.

RESULTS

The mean and standard deviation (mean ± SD) of shear bond strengths in the control group were 81.48 ± 8.18 MPa. In the palatal bevel group, they were 97.74 ± 11.41 MPa; in the labial and palatal bevel group, 131.56 ± 9.25 MPa; and in the composite veneer group, 104.36 ± 5.50 MPa. Significant differences were observed between the groups, but there was no significant difference between the palatal bevel and composite veneer groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Reattachment of the fractured fragments by all three methods increased the shear bond strength. The highest shear bond strength was obtained when both labial and palatal bevels were used.

Effects of remaining dentin thickness on the bond strength of bleached dentin

Background

The bond strength of resin composites to dentin was reported to be related to either the remaining dentin thickness (RDT) or bleaching treatment. However, information is limited regarding the effects of RDT on the bond strength of bleached dentin. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of RDT on the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of resin cement to bleached dentin.

Methods

A total of 120 dentin specimens were prepared and randomly divided into 2 groups: a bleaching group (group B) and a control group (group C). Hydrogen peroxide with a concentration of 35% (Ultradent, USA) was applied on the dentin surface for 2 × 1 d for group B, while no bleaching treatment was performed for group C. After the treatment, the specimens were finished and polished to obtain different RDTs (2, 1, and 0.5 mm) and divided into 3 groups of 20 specimens each. The bonding procedure was performed using Panavia V5 (Kuraray, Japan) with a bonding area of 0.785 mm². For each group, half of the specimens were subjected to 5000 thermal cycles (subgroup T), while the other half did not receive thermocycling (subgroup N) (n = 10). The specimens were then subjected to the μSBS test using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by a three-way analysis of variance (α = 0.05). The fracture modes of the specimens were confirmed with a measuring microscope. Representative specimens with different fracture modes were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Results

The μSBS values were significantly affected by bleaching treatment (p < 0.001), whereas no significant effect was observed for thermocycling (p = 0.293). In terms of RDT, a significantly different μSBS value was found among the subgroups with different RDTs in group C (p = 0.003). However, the RDT did not significantly affect the μSBS values of bleached dentin in group B (p = 0.779). The μSBS values were significantly lower in group B than in group C (p < 0.001). A higher percentage of adhesive failure was observed in group B than in group C.

Conclusion

Based on the present findings, it can be concluded that the RDT did not affect the bond strength of resin cement to bleached dentin.

Clinical significance

Since RDT did not affect the bond strength of resin cement to bleached dentin, bonding procedures should not be performed immediately after intracoronal bleaching, even if the dentin is planned to be removed due to a tooth preparation process.

Comparative evaluation of adhesive performance to dentin: study in patients of different ages

The article describes in vitro evaluation of the micro-shear bond strength between composite resin and dentin specimens treated with self-etching, total-etching and universal dental adhesives for patients of different ages. The authors compared microstructure of resin-infiltrated zone for self-etching, total-etching and universal dental adhesive systems by means of scanning electron microscopy. These findings presented negatively effects of aging on the bond strength of dentinal surfaces and the advantages of adhesive protocol with universal adhesives for all ages.

Effect of different surface treatments of human occlusal sclerotic dentin on micro-tensile bond strength to resin composite core material

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of composite bonded to human occlusal sclerotic dentin following different surface treatments to determine the sclerotic dentin morphology. Human molars without (normal dentin; group 1) or with occlusal wear (sclerotic dentin; groups 2-5) were divided and subjected to different surface treatments, including the normal protocol for the Contax self-etch bonding system (group 1 and 2); doubled etch-prime time (group 3); pre-conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid before normal protocol (group 4); or pre-conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid before doubling the self-etching time (group 5). All teeth were restored with composite (Luxacore Z dual), sectioned into stick specimens and stored for 24 h in water before specimens were subjected to the μTBS test (n = 50 per group). The μTBS of normal dentin was not statistically significantly different from that of the sclerotic dentin groups, except for the doubled etch-prime time group which showed lower μTBS. Sclerotic dentin pre-treated with phosphoric acid resulted in less sclerotic casts and wider dentinal tubules, while doubled etch-prime time did not alter the morphology, as shown by scanning electron microscopy. In conclusion, the use of 37% phosphoric acid before applying self-etch bonding resulted in more tubule openings and a significantly higher μTBS when compared with the doubled etch-prime time group.

Shear Bond Strength of Three Composite Resins to Fluorosed and Sound Dentine: In Vitro Study

Introduction

This in vitro study compared the shear strength of three composite resin systems to fluorosed and normal dentin.

Methods

Silorane FiltekTM P90, FiltekTMZ250 XT in combination with the adhesive system AdperTM Single bond 2, and Amelogen® Plus in association with Peak Universal Bond® were tested. Fifteen normal and 15 fluorosed dentine disks were prepared per material. The shear bond strength test was performed using a universal machine.

Results

One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in bond strength between the tested composite resins. All tested materials had significantly different adhesion at the fluorosed and the nonfluorosed interface. FiltekTM Z250 XT and Silorane had lower adhesion values to fluorosed than to normal dentin. In contrast, Amelogen® Plus presented a better average resistance at the fluorosed interface.

Conclusion

Amelogen® Plus presented a better average shear bond strength on the fluorosed dentine. FiltekTMZ250 XT showed the best adhesion forces and shear bond strength with sound dentine. Further studies are needed to better understand the sealing of these systems.

Effect of 2% Chlorhexidine Following Acid Etching on Microtensile Bond Strength of Resin Restorations: A Meta-Analysis

Background and Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effect of 2% chlorhexidine following acid etching on the microtensile bond strength of resin restorations for different follow-up times. Materials and Methods: A thorough search of PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases were conducted. In vitro experimental studies or in vivo studies published up to December 2018 with an experimental group treated with a 2% chlorhexidine solution following acid etching and a control group were included, wherein the final restoration used a resin composite in both the groups. Results: Twenty-one articles were identified for qualitative analysis and 18 for meta-analysis. The difference in the means of microtensile bond strength between the two groups was calculated for the different follow-up times. The differences were significant for 6 months (4.30 MPa; 95% CI 2.72–5.89), 12 months (8.41 MPa; 95% CI 4.93–11.88), and 2–5 years including aged and thermocycling samples (9.08 MPa; 95% CI 5.36–12.81). There were no significant differences for the type of adhesive used. A meta-regression model showed a significant effect of time on the microtensile bond strength. Conclusions: The application of a 2% chlorhexidine solution after acid etching increased the microtensile bond strength significantly for follow-up times of 6 months or more. The adhesive type had no influence.
