Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS To study the progression of HbA1c after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents during 2010-2019 with emphasis on HbA1c nadir 3-6 months after onset. METHODS Partial funding was secured for this study. The Swedish paediatric diabetes quality register SWEDIABKIDS has >95 % coverage of type 1 diabetes up to 18 years. A mixed model for repeated measurements was used to estimate differences in HbA1c between onset year periods. RESULTS We followed 6,891 patients over two years from onset (48,292 HbA1c values). We found a gradual decrease in mean HbA1c 24 months after onset from 56.0 mmol/mol (7.28 %) in 2010/11 to 50.5 mmol/mol (6.77 %) in 2018/19, which is at the level of several recent intervention studies. The initial drop in HbA1c from onset until 3 and 6 months has become more pronounced in recent years. There was a significant positive correlation between HbA1c at 3 and 6 months with 12, 18 and 24 months. Percentage of severe hypoglycaemic coma was higher (5.1 % vs 3.4 %; p = 0.023) in 2010/2011 than 2018/2019, but the absolute risk of ketoacidosis was essentially unchanged, (1.5 % to 0.8 %, p = 0.110) CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: There was a continuous decrease in HbA1c over the study period 2010-2019, which coincides in time with an increased use of diabetes technology and lowering the HbA1c target to 48 mmol/mol (6.5 %). The decrease in 2-year HbA1c was preceded by a lower HbA1c nadir, which may set the trajectories for coming HbA1c and be a modifiable factor for a long-term improvement in metabolic control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social media have shown the potential to support type 1 diabetes self-management by providing informational, emotional, and peer-to-peer support. However, the perceptions of young people and health care professionals' (HCPs) toward the use of social media for type 1 diabetes self-management have not been systematically reviewed. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to explore and summarize the experiences and views of young people with type 1 diabetes and their HCPs on using social media for self-management across qualitative findings. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL from 2012 to 2023 using Medical Subject Heading terms and text words related to type 1 diabetes and social media. We screened and selected the studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We quality appraised and characterized the included studies and conducted a thematic synthesis. RESULTS We included 11 studies in our synthesis. A total of 9 of them were qualitative and 2 were mixed methods studies. Ten focused on young people with type 1 diabetes and 1 on HCPs. All used content analysis and were of moderate to high quality. Thirteen descriptive themes were yielded by our thematic synthesis, contributing to five analytic themes: (1) differences in how young people interact with social media, (2) characteristics of social media platforms that influence their use and uptake for type 1 diabetes self-management, (3) social media as a source of information, (4) impact on young people's coping and emotional well-being, and (5) impact on support from and relationships with HCPs and services. CONCLUSIONS The synthesis suggests that we should consider leveraging social media's peer support capabilities to augment the traditional services for young people with type 1 diabetes. However, the patients may have privacy concerns about HCPs' involvement in their online activities. This warrants an update of existing guidelines to help young people use social media safely for self-managing their diabetes.

Abstract
Social media (SM) refers to social networking sites (SNSs), which are defined as online services that enable individuals to build a public or semi-public profile and give them the opportunity to create a network of contacts and interact. SM affects all aspects of life and may offer new opportunities to explore new experiences and perspectives of life because of its feasibility. But several times, because of feasibility, misinformation is generated intentionally or unintentionally, which spreads rapidly, and such misinformation can affect all aspects of life. However, health-related misinformation can be life-threatening to individuals. Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that deals with endocrine glands and hormones, which regulates mood, growth, development, metabolism and the way our organ works to maintain internal homeostasis. SM usage and endocrine health impact each other in both positive and negative ways. So, in this review, we will discuss about the effect of SM on Endocrine health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the potential for social media to spread health misinformation, it is important to understand how trusts impact adolescents' engagement with health content on social media. OBJECTIVE To explore the concept of trust when adolescents (13-18 years) engage with health information on social media. Five relevant databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ERIC, and CINAHL) were systematically searched alongside Google Scholar and reference lists of included papers. Studies were included if they examined adolescents' trust when engaging with health information on social media. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS Thematic analysis was used to synthesize the findings from this review. RESULTS Thirty-four papers were included. Three key domains were explored: trust in the social media platform/service (general distrust of social media for health information; safety and privacy); trust in other users (mistrust of unknown users; fear of bullying or judgment; trust in friends or peers; celebrities and popularity; trust in others' experience and the importance of social support); trust in content (tone and appearance of health information; expertise and verification; advertising, pushed, and suggested content). LIMITATIONS Narrow geographic representation of papers and limited quantitative studies. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS Adolescents' trust in health information on social media involves a complex interplay between trust in: social media platforms, other users, and health content. Central to many of the findings is the social and identity work done by adolescents on and through social media.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate adolescents' communication with healthcare providers (HCPs) and co- design a question prompt list as one part of an intervention to increase patient participation and communication at diabetes clinic visits. METHODS Using an adolescent-led co-design approach we conducted interviews and focus groups with adolescents, parents, and healthcare providers (HCPs) and held workshops with both a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) and a Parent Advisory Group (PAG). RESULTS Adolescents and parents identified challenges categorised into four themes: negative experience communicating with HCPs, lacking patient education leading to disinterest, low self-confidence out of fear of being wrong and forgetting to ask question(s). Adolescents identified that a Question Prompt List (QPL) could help them to ask questions, be more confident and participate more. The design process was an iterative development that engaged all stakeholders. Parents and HCPs assumed adolescents had greater knowledge about diabetes than they had in reality. CONCLUSIONS Divergence in perceptions between adults and adolescents regarding patient knowledge of diabetes care demonstrates the importance of encouraging adolescents to ask the questions that matter to them. The QPL could be a useful means of supporting adolescents to actively participate in clinic encounters with healthcare providers.

Abstract
Purpose: Individuals in the emerging adult age group (18-30 years) with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) have unique medical and social needs. The purpose of this study was to observe barriers and strategies for diabetes management among emerging adults with T1DM. Methods: A qualitative grounded theory model was utilized. An open-ended approach with a telephone interview was designed to allow a deeper understanding of the T1DM experience. The participants were from a larger survey-volunteer participant group and were asked to complete 1 interview in spring 2020 (n = 21, diagnosed age: mean 15.00 ± 8.00, females, n = 19). The data were analyzed for cohesive themes using grounded theory. Results: Participants indicated three main barrier themes (physiology, environment, and insurance) and 3 barrier subthemes (mental health, lack of social support, and weather). Three main strategy themes to diabetes management were recognized (medical technology, access to social support, and physical activity). There were 2 strategy subthemes (social media and social accountability). Conclusions: Regular use of social media can be a key tool for social accountability while lack of social support and physiological shifts can be barriers to management of T1DM. Physical activity should be considered as part of an individualized plan for management of diabetes.

Abstract
AIM This integrative review aimed to synthesise the available quantitative and qualitative studies on the effectiveness of diabetes self-management education (DSME) delivered through social media on glycaemic control (HbA1c), knowledge, health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL), anxiety, depression and self-efficacy in people with diabetes mellitus. BACKGROUND DSME is the main component of diabetes management which contributes to behavioural changes and the improvement of metabolic control and self-monitoring skills. Due to limited face-to-face access to healthcare services, social media has increasingly been used to deliver DSME for people with diabetes. However, there is a paucity of reviews addressing the effectiveness of using social media in delivering DSME. DESIGN An integrative review was conducted based on Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) methodology. METHODS The following databases were searched for relevant studies published between 2000 and 2020: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, EMBASE, EMCare and Google Scholar. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The PRISMA checklist for systematic reviews was used. RESULTS A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Facebook and WhatsApp were the most common social media platforms used to deliver DSME intervention. Nurses were the most frequent DSME providers. The duration and content of DSME in the reviewed studies varied. Consistent positive outcomes were found on glycaemic control, diabetic knowledge and self-efficacy. No studies considered the effect of DSME on HRQoL, anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS Social media DSME can be effective in reducing HbA1c levels, increasing diabetic knowledge and self-efficacy. Further studies are needed to examine the effectiveness of using social media to deliver DSME intervention on HRQoL, anxiety and depression. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This review provides nurses and healthcare professionals with evidence to support the use of social media to deliver DSME for people with diabetes. DSME delivered via social media supported by nurses would overcome limitations of face-to-face delivery such as geographical distance, travelling time, or other limited resources by patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Background Patient involvement with diabetes self‐care is critical to reducing complications, morbidity, and mortality. Social media, as one of the most important forms of digital health, has always been available for diabetes self‐care, although the role of these media in supporting patient self‐care is unclear. Aims The aim of this study was to investigate the role of social networks in diabetes self‐care. In this study, the most important social networks used to receive self‐care services, diabetes self‐care behaviors, diabetes self‐care educations and benefits of using various services provided through social networks were identified. Methods The present study is a cross‐sectional study that was conducted through an electronic researcher‐made questionnaire in 2021. Two hundred and eighteen patients were selected to participate in the study from centers of diabetes of Fasa city, south of Iran. Sampling was performed by convenience sampling and in accordance with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and analytical tests. Results In the data analysis section on Diabetes self‐care behaviors, there was no significant relationship between gender (p = 0.292), age (p = 0.49), type of diabetes (p = 0.909) and duration of diabetes (p = 0.076) with the use of self‐care services provided through social networks. There was a significant relationship between education level and the use of self‐care services provided through social networks (p = 0.01). “Recognizing diabetes and its complications,” “observing personal hygiene,” and “the impact of physical activity on diabetes control” were the most important educations. “Increasing patient knowledge and understanding about diabetes and its complications,” “reducing the consumption of high‐calorie foods and sugars,” and “observing personal and public health” were the most important social network's benefits, respectively. Conclusions Various self‐care educations and services provided through social networks can increase the in‐depth knowledge of diabetic patients about self‐care techniques and their effective role in controlling and managing diabetes and performing more self‐care processes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine youth and parent perspectives on the acceptability of Bright 1 Bodies, a group physical activity and coping intervention for adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS Adolescents participated in 12 weekly sessions of moderate to vigorous physical activity and discussion with peers with T1DM. Adolescents completed an exit survey measuring satisfaction with the intervention on a 5-point Likert scale. Semistructured interviews were conducted with adolescents and at least one parent. Qualitative description was used to develop themes that summarize the acceptability of the intervention. RESULTS Mean scores for survey subscales were: 4.5 (SD = 0.39) for program components and strategies, 4.4 (SD = 0.44) for comfort with the intervention, and 4.3 (SD = 0.62) for instructors. Themes included: (1) adolescents and parents valued being around others with T1DM and their families, (2) the intervention helped adolescents gain knowledge and reinforce diabetes self-management behaviors, (3) challenges included convenience and sustaining participant engagement, and (4) adolescents intended to sustain physical activity and diabetes self-management behaviors after the intervention. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents and parents viewed the intervention as acceptable across multiple domains. Participants valued the group aspect of the intervention, and future interventions would benefit from integrating social interactions with others with T1DM.

Abstract
Purpose of Review This review aims to address the actual state of the most advanced diabetes devices, as follows: continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSII), continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM), hybrid-closed loop (HCL) systems, and “Do-it-yourself” Artificial Pancreas Systems (DIYAPS) in children, adolescents, and young adults. This review has also the objective to assess the use of telemedicine for diabetes care across three different areas: education, social media, and daily care. Recent Findings Recent advances in diabetes technology after integration of CSII with CGM have increased the popularity of this treatment modality in pediatric age and shifted the standard diabetes management in many countries. We found an impressive transition from the use of CSII and/or CGM only to integrative devices with automated delivery systems. Although much has changed over the past 5 years, including a pandemic period that precipitated a broader use of telemedicine in diabetes care, some advances in technology may still be an additional burden of care for providers, patients, and caregivers. The extent of a higher rate of “auto-mode” use in diabetes devices while using the HCL/DIYAPS is essential to reduce the burden of diabetes treatment. Summary More studies including higher-risk populations are needed, and efforts should be taken to ensure proper access to cost-effective advanced technology on diabetes care. Abstract
Youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) must adhere to a complex treatment regimen to prevent health complications. Friends may provide diabetes-specific support to help youth manage diabetes, but evidence on whether youth benefit from diabetes-specific friend support is inconclusive. The present study first investigated whether satisfaction with friend support was linked to psychological distress and diabetes management. Second, it was investigated whether self-esteem mediated these relations. To this end, 324 Dutch-speaking emerging adults (17-28 years) with T1D completed questionnaires on diabetes-specific friend support, self-esteem, diabetes-specific distress, depressive symptoms, and self-care. HbA1c values were obtained from patients' physicians. Receiving diabetes-specific support from friends was associated with more diabetes-specific distress, but not for youth who were satisfied with the received support. Diabetes-specific friend support was not associated with other outcomes. Self-esteem did not mediate these relations. These results suggest that associations between diabetes-specific friend support and diabetes management are limited and that support satisfaction should be taken into consideration when examining the role of friend support for youth with T1D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient engagement with diabetes self-care is critical to reducing morbidity and mortality. Social media is one form of digital health that is available for diabetes self-care, although its use for peer-to-peer communication has not been systematically described, and its potential to support patient self-care is unclear. OBJECTIVE The primary aim of this systematic review was to describe the use of social media among patients (peer-to-peer) to manage diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The secondary aim was to assess patients' clinical outcomes, behavioral outcomes, quality of life, and self-efficacy resulting from peer-to-peer social media use. METHODS We conducted a literature search in the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO (January 2008 through April 2019). The inclusion criteria were quantitative studies that included peer-to-peer use of social media for self-care of diabetes mellitus (with all subtypes) and CVD, including stroke. RESULTS After an initial yield of 3066 citations, we selected 91 articles for a full-text review and identified 7 papers that met our inclusion criteria. Of these, 4 studies focused on type 1 diabetes, 1 study included both type 1 and 2 diabetes, and 2 studies included multiple chronic conditions (eg, CVD, diabetes, depression, etc). Our search did not yield any individual studies on CVD alone. Among the selected papers, 2 studies used commercial platforms (Facebook and I Seek You), 3 studies used discussion forums developed specifically for each study, and 2 surveyed patients through different platforms or blogs. There was significant heterogeneity in the study designs, methodologies, and outcomes applied, but all studies showed favorable results on either primary or secondary outcomes. The quality of studies was highly variable. CONCLUSIONS The future landscape of social media use for patient self-care is promising. However, current use is nascent. Our extensive search yielded only 7 studies, all of which included diabetes, indicating the most interest and demand for peer-to-peer interaction on diabetes self-care. Future research is needed to establish efficacy and safety in recommending social media use among peers for diabetes self-care and other conditions.
