The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the detrimental effects of a lack of understanding of public health measures. During the pandemic, lockdowns, social distancing, and mask mandates introduced by governments were met with skepticism, doubt, and an unwillingness to comply, increasing the extent of negative outcomes as a result. Albeit devastating, the pandemic has offered an invaluable opportunity to observe the correlation between the prevalence of public health education and compliance with public health measures during critical times. In this article, we describe a card game that was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to educate the public (including children) about how specific public health measures address the pandemic and how global cooperation is essential in addressing even one country's problems. The game can be used in primary, secondary, or tertiary education classrooms, initiating conversations about the topic and providing a basic understanding before more in-depth learning.

Gamification and Soft Skills Assessment in the Development of a Serious Game: Design and Feasibility Pilot Study

BACKGROUND

The advent of new technologies has had a profound impact on the labor market, transforming the way we work and interact with each other. With the rise of digital tools and platforms, gamification has emerged as a powerful technique for enhancing productivity and engagement in various fields, including human resource management. In particular, gamification has been found to be effective in developing and assessing soft skills, which play a critical role in determining the success of individuals, teams, and organizations.

OBJECTIVE

We present a serious game that identifies the most sought-after skills in the job market and offers feedback, and we provide a set of guidelines for the creation of serious games.

METHODS

We present the serious game Among the Office Criticality (AOC). The AOC game structure involves a set of sequence analysis techniques, which is known as process mining.

RESULTS

The pilot study findings indicate that the game is both engaging and beneficial to subjects, suggesting that the results align with current theoretical perspectives. Furthermore, the study suggests that the obtained data can be extended to the broader population.

CONCLUSIONS

This study illustrates a serious game structured according to the needs of the labor market and developed to put the user at the center, using evaluation techniques consistent with the literature, with the aim of constituting an interdisciplinary approach suitable for adequately assessing users and creating value for them.

The untapped potential of Games for Health in times of crises. A critical reflection

Given its promising role in public health to address hard to reach population groups, game-based interventions (i.e., Games for Health, G4H) have experienced growing interest in recent years. Therefore, it is surprising that they have played only a minor role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the aim of this paper is to reflect the opportunities and challenges of G4H especially during the pandemic but also with regard to future health crises. As commercial video games (i.e., those that primarily aim to entertain its users) were often used to deal with the containment measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, we call for greater cooperation with commercial game makers to distribute health-related messages via entertainment games. With regard to G4H we see a need to (i) strengthen the intervention theory underlying game-based applications, (ii) to enhance the appeal of games in order to maintain the interest of users in the long term, and (iii) to improve the evidence base using appropriate study designs. Finally, we argue for (iv) greater user involvement, both in terms of developing game-based approaches and as co-researchers in solving complex health problems.
