Abstract
Human patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are susceptible to several long-term complications that are related to glycemic control and immune dysregulation. Immune function remains relatively unexplored in dogs with naturally occurring diabetes mellitus (NODM). Calcitriol improves various aspects of immune function in a variety of species, but its effect in diabetic dogs remains unexplored. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate immune function in dogs with NODM and determine if differences exist based on the level of clinical control and (ii) assess the immunomodulatory effects of calcitriol. Twenty diabetic dogs (clinically controlled, n = ten, not controlled, n = ten) and 20 non-diabetic, healthy control dogs were included in this prospective, case-control study. Whole blood was incubated with calcitriol (10-7 M) or negative control, after which the samples were divided for phagocytosis and leukocyte cytokine response experiments. The phagocytosis of opsonized Escherichia coli (E. coli) was evaluated with flow cytometry. The samples for leukocyte cytokine response evaluations were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lipoteichoic acid (LTA), or phosphate buffer solution (PBS; negative control), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were measured in supernatant using a canine-specific multiplex bead-based assay. The leukocytes from diabetic dogs produced higher concentrations of IL-10 (p = 0.01), IL-6 (p < 0.0001), and IL-8 (p < 0.0001) than the control dogs while controlling for the intervention and stimulant. Calcitriol decreased the supernatant concentrations of TNF-α (p < 0.001) and IL-8 (p = 0.04) with concomitant increases in IL-6 (p = 0.005). Diabetic dogs had a lower percentage of leukocytes undergoing phagocytosis (p < 0.0001) but a higher number of bacteria phagocytized per cell (p = 0.001) when compared to the control dogs. Calcitriol had no effect on phagocytic capacity. Lastly, the status of clinical control in diabetic dogs did not yield differences in immune function. These results support that dogs with NODM exhibit immune dysregulation and warrant additional investigation.

Abstract
The early innate immune response to coccidioidomycosis has proven to be pivotal in directing the adaptive immune response and disease outcome in mice and humans but is unexplored in dogs. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the innate immune profile of dogs with coccidioidomycosis and determine if differences exist based on the extent of infection (i.e., pulmonary or disseminated). A total of 28 dogs with coccidioidomycosis (pulmonary, n = 16; disseminated, n = 12) and 10 seronegative healthy controls were enrolled. Immunologic testing was performed immediately, without ex vivo incubation (i.e., constitutive), and after coccidioidal antigen stimulation of whole blood cultures. Whole blood cultures were incubated with a phosphate-buffered solution (PBS) (negative control) or a coccidioidal antigen (rCTS1 (105-310); 10 µg/mL) for 24 h. A validated canine-specific multiplex bead-based assay was used to measure 12 cytokines in plasma and cell culture supernatant. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured with an ELISA assay. Leukocyte expression of toll-like receptors (TLRs)2 and TLR4 was measured using flow cytometry. Dogs with coccidioidomycosis had higher constitutive plasma keratinocyte chemotactic (KC)-like concentrations (p = 0.02) and serum CRP concentrations compared to controls (p < 0.001). Moreover, dogs with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis had higher serum CRP concentrations than those with dissemination (p = 0.001). Peripheral blood leukocytes from dogs with coccidioidomycosis produced higher concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (p = 0.0003), interleukin (IL)-6 (p = 0.04), interferon (IFN)-γ (p = 0.03), monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (p = 0.02), IL-10 (p = 0.02), and lower IL-8 (p = 0.003) in supernatants following coccidioidal antigen stimulation when compared to those from control dogs. There was no detectable difference between dogs with pulmonary and disseminated disease. No differences in constitutive or stimulated leukocyte TLR2 and TLR4 expression were found. These results provide information about the constitutive and coccidioidal antigen-specific stimulated immune profile in dogs with naturally acquired coccidioidomycosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether dogs with cytochrome b5 reductase (CYB5R) deficiency have a constitutive proinflammatory phenotype, characterize hematologic and serum chemistry results, and describe changes in methemoglobin (MetHb) levels and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations after long-term per os (PO) methylene blue (MB) therapy. ANIMALS 21 client-owned dogs (CYB5R deficient, n = 10; healthy controls, 11). PROCEDURES In this prospective, case-control study, methemoglobin levels were measured using a blood gas analyzer with co-oximetry. Plasma tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) concentrations were measured using a canine-specific multiplex bead-based assay. Serum CRP concentrations were measured with a canine-specific commercial ELISA kit. Serum CRP concentration and MetHb levels were measured in 6 dogs with CYB5R deficiency after ≥ 60 days of PO MB therapy. RESULTS As expected, MetHb levels were higher in dogs with CYB5R deficiency compared to controls (P < .001). Plasma TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and serum CRP concentrations were no different between CYB5R-deficient and control dogs. Dogs with CYB5R deficiency had lower absolute lymphocyte (P = .005) and eosinophil counts (P = .04) and higher alanine transaminase (P = .04) and alkaline phosphatase activity (P = .02) than controls, but these changes were not clinically relevant. Methemoglobin levels decreased after PO MB therapy (P = .03). CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results suggest that otherwise healthy dogs with CYB5R deficiency do not have a constitutive proinflammatory phenotype and clinically relevant abnormalities in hematologic and serum chemistry panels are not expected. Dogs with decreased quality of life attributed to methemoglobinemia from CYB5R deficiency might benefit from PO MB therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinicopathologic variables predictive of disseminated coccidioidomycosis are known in humans but have not been explored in dogs. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH)D correlates with severity of disease of various etiologies in dogs but its role in coccidioidomycosis is unknown. OBJECTIVE Determine whether serum 25(OH)D concentrations are different in dogs with coccidioidomycosis compared with healthy controls and if clinicopathologic variables are associated with extent of disease. ANIMALS Thirty-five dogs with coccidioidomycosis (pulmonary, n = 13; disseminated, n = 15; uncharacterized, n = 7), and 25 healthy control dogs. METHODS Prospective cohort study. Serum 25(OH)D and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations were measured with modified-HPLC and a commercial ELISA kit, respectively. RESULTS There was no difference in 25(OH)D concentrations between dogs with coccidioidomycosis (median, interquartile range [IQR]; 31.9 ng/mL, 23.3-49.2) and controls (29.5 ng/mL, 25.6-40.8, P = .73). Serum 25(OH)D concentration was lower in dogs with coccidioidomycosis and IgG titers ≥1:32 than dogs with titers below this cut-off (P = .02). Dogs with IgG titers ≥1:32 were more likely to have disseminated disease (OR, 7.5; 95% CI: 1.1-68; P = .03). Serum CRP concentrations were higher in dogs with IgG titers ≥1:16 (median, IQR; 4474.8 ng/mL, 2885.8-8236.1) than in those below this cut-off (151.2 ng/mL, 30.4-2907.3; P = .02). There was a significant inverse association between serum 25(OH)D and CRP at 25(OH)D concentrations ≤33 ng/mL. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Serum 25(OH)D concentration was lower for dogs with IgG titers ≥1:32, indicating a potential association between semi-quantitative titers and 25(OH)D concentrations in dogs with coccidioidomycosis. IgG titers ≥1:32 yielded higher odds of disseminated disease, but was inadequate as a standalone test to determine form of disease.

Abstract
Whole foods in humans decrease inflammation and risk for various diseases, as well as increase weight loss and immune function. Nutrition has been shown to be an integral component in the management of various diseases in dogs but the immunologic and anti-inflammatory effects of whole food diets have not been explored. Therefore, our objective was to assess the effect of feeding a whole food diet on immune function and inflammatory phenotype in healthy dogs. A prospective, randomized, open-labeled, cross-over clinical trial was performed. Sixteen healthy client-owned dogs were fed either a whole food or an extruded dry diet, and after 67 days, they were fed the alternate diet for an additional 67 days. Blood samples were obtained at the completion of each treatment arm (i.e., days 67 and 134). Serum c-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin (Hp), and serum amyloid-A (SAA) were measured with ELISA assays. Whole blood cultures were performed with exposure to a phosphate-buffered solution (PBS), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and lipoteichoic acid (LTA). A canine specific multiplex bead-based assay was then used to measure tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), IL-2, IL-8, and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 concentrations. Granulocyte/monocyte (GM) phagocytosis and oxidative burst associated with Escherichia coli were evaluated via flow cytometry. Dogs fed a whole food diet had significantly lower TNF-α-to-IL-10 ratios (P = 0.05) and higher production of IL-8 (P = 0.03) with LTA-exposed leukocytes compared to dogs fed an extruded dry diet. There were no between-treatment differences in the remaining leukocyte cytokine responses, serum CRP, Hp, SAA concentrations, or GM phagocytic and oxidative burst capacities. Whole food diets could have immunomodulatory effects in dogs. Future studies in non-healthy dogs are warranted.

Abstract
Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating calcium metabolism and in the development and maintenance of skeletal health of companion animals. There is also a growing interest in understanding the role vitamin D plays in non-skeletal health in both human and veterinary patients. This review provides an update of our current understanding of vitamin D biology in dogs and cats and gives an overview of how vitamin D metabolism can be assessed in companion animals. Congenital and acquired vitamin D disorders are then summarised before the review concludes with a summary of recent studies which have explored the role of vitamin D in the development and outcomes of non-skeletal diseases of dogs and cats.

Abstract
Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is one of the most common orthopaedic disorders diagnosed in dogs yet the factors which influence postoperative clinical outcomes are poorly understood. Low vitamin D status has been linked to poorer clinical outcomes in human patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between pre-operative vitamin D status, as defined by serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations, and initial disease severity and clinical outcomes in dogs undergoing surgical treatment for a CCLR. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured in 44 dogs with a CCLR on the day before surgery. C-reactive protein concentrations were measured at a median time of 1 day post-surgery and the patient's clinical and radiographic response to CCLR surgical treatment was assessed at a median timepoint of 60 days post-surgery. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations in dogs with a CCLR was not significantly different to a population of healthy dogs (median 74.1 nmol/L and 88.40 nmol/L, respectively). There was no significant correlation between pre-operative serum 25(OH)D concentrations and length of pre-diagnosis clinical signs, pre-operative lameness scores or day 1 post-operative CRP concentrations. Thirty nine of the 44 dogs were re-examined at a median 60 days post-surgery. There was no relationship between the day 60 lameness scores and pre-operative serum 25(OH)D concentrations. In summary, we discovered that the vitamin D status of dogs with a CCLR was not significantly lower than healthy dogs and pre-operative serum 25(OH)D concentrations were not correlated to either pre-surgical disease severity or post-operative clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Decreased circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and increased inflammatory marker concentrations have been reported separately in canine cancer. Correlations between the two exist in humans, but little work has examined links in dogs. This study aimed to determine plasma 25(OH)D and inflammatory marker concentrations in healthy dogs and dogs with cancer and to assess correlations in each group. Newly diagnosed dogs with B-cell lymphoma (B-cell, n = 25), T-cell lymphoma (T-cell, n = 9), osteosarcoma (OSA, n = 21), and mast cell tumour (MCT, n = 26) presenting to a tertiary oncology centre, and healthy dogs (n = 25), were enrolled. Plasma samples were analysed for 25(OH)D, C-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin (HP), serum amyloid A (SAA), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AAG), and 13 chemokines and cytokines. Dogs with B-cell had decreased plasma 25(OH)D (P = .03), and increased plasma CRP, AAG, HP, KC-like and MCP-1 concentrations (P < =.001, .011, <.001, .013 and .009, respectively) compared with healthy dogs. Plasma CRP, HP and SAA concentrations were increased in dogs with OSA compared with healthy dogs (P = .001, .010 and .027, respectively). No differences were noted in dogs with T-cell and MCT. Negative correlations were observed between plasma 25(OH)D concentrations and: AAG concentrations in dogs with T-cell (Rs = -0.817, P = .007); GM-CSF concentrations (Rs = -0.569, P = .007) in dogs with OSA; and IL-7 concentrations (Rs = -0.548, P = .010) in dogs with OSA. Decreased 25(OH)D concentrations and increased concentrations of multiple inflammatory markers were observed in B-cell patients, supporting an association between 25(OH)D and inflammation. The cross-sectional study design meant the timing of changes could not be determined. Prospective cohort studies are warranted.

Abstract
Gallbladder mucocele (GBM) is a common biliary disorder in dogs. Gallbladder hypokinesia has been proposed to contribute to its formation and progression. The specific cause of gallbladder stasis in dogs with GBM as well as viable treatment options to resolve dysmotility remains unknown. Vitamin D deficiency is one of the many potential causes of gallbladder hypokinesia in humans and repletion results in complete resolution of stasis. Improving our understanding of the relationship between serum vitamin D and GBM could help identify dogs as a model for humans with gallbladder hypokinesia. Furthermore, this relationship could provide insight into the pathogenesis of GBM and support the need for future studies to investigate vitamin D as a novel treatment target. Therefore, goals of this study were i) to determine if serum 25-hydroxyvitamin(OH)D concentrations were decreased in dogs with GBM, ii) if serum 25(OH)D concentrations were different in clinical versus dogs subclinical for GBM, and iii) to determine if serum 25(OH)D concentrations could predict the ultrasonographic type of GBM. Sixty-two dogs (clinical, n = 26; subclinical, n = 36) with GBM and 20 healthy control dogs were included in this prospective observational study. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured with a competitive chemiluminescence immunoassay. Overall, dogs with GBM had lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations than control dogs (P = 0.004). Subsequent subgroup analysis indicated that this difference was only significant in the subclinical group compared to the control dogs (P = 0.008), and serum 25(OH)D concentrations did not significantly differ between dogs clinical for GBM versus subclinical or control dogs, indicating that inflammatory state in clinical dogs was not the major constituent of the observed findings. Decreasing serum 25(OH)D concentrations, but not clinical status, was associated with a more advanced developmental stage of GBM type determined by ultrasonography. Our results indicate that vitamin D has a role in dogs with GBM. Additional studies are needed to assess if reduced vitamin D in dogs with GBM is a cause or effect of their biliary disease and to investigate if vitamin D supplementation could be beneficial for dogs with GBM.

Abstract
Background The active metabolite of vitamin D, calcitriol, has been shown across many different species to augment innate immune responses and dampen aberrant proinflammatory cytokine production. Community acquired infections are common in shelters and consume limited shelter resources, impact adoption rates, and can result in unnecessary euthanasia. Prophylactic oral vitamin D supplementation decreases the incidence and severity of upper and lower respiratory tract infections in humans. Before a clinical trial investigating the clinical benefit of oral vitamin D supplementation in shelter dogs can be pursued, an in vitro study evaluating the immunomodulatory effects of calcitriol in blood from shelter dogs is warranted. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine if incubation of whole blood obtained from apparently healthy dogs housed in a shelter for ≥7 days with calcitriol would alter granulocyte/monocyte (GM) oxidative burst and phagocytic function as well as pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-stimulated leukocyte production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-10. Results Ten dogs housed in a shelter for ≥7 days were enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Whole blood from these dogs was incubated with calcitriol (10− 7 M) or diluent (control) for 24 h. Subsequent to this incubation, phagocytosis of opsonized-Escherichia coli (E. coli) and E. coli-induced oxidative burst were evaluated via flow cytometry. In addition, leukocyte production of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10 were measured using a canine-specific multiplex bead assay. Calcitriol significantly decreased leukocyte TNF-α production (p = 0.009) and increased IL-10 production (p = 0.002). Tumor necrosis factor-α-to-IL-10 ratio was significantly decreased with calcitriol (p = 0.017), while IL-6 production as well as GM oxidative burst and phagocytic function were not significantly affected. Conclusions These data indicate that calcitriol attenuates proinflammatory immune responses without affecting GM oxidative burst or phagocytic function in vitro in whole blood obtained from apparently healthy shelter dogs.

Abstract
This study sought to establish a baseline understanding of immune function and its association with serum vitamin D in shelter dogs. Ten apparently healthy shelter dogs housed in the Arizona Humane Society for ≥7 days and 10 apparently healthy, age, breed, and sex-matched control dogs were included. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), the major circulating vitamin D metabolite, was measured using high performance liquid chromatography. Whole blood samples were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lipoteichoic acid, or phosphate buffer solution, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-ɑ, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-10 were measured using a canine-specific multiplex bead-based assay. Phagocytosis of opsonized-Escherichia coli and E. coli-induced oxidative burst were evaluated with flow cytometry. Shelter dogs had decreased percentages of granulocytes and monocytes (GM) that had phagocytized opsonized-E coli (P = 0.019) and performed E. coli-induced oxidative burst (P = 0.011). There were no significant differences in TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, or 25(OH)D concentrations between shelter and control dogs. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations had a weak positive association with the intensity of GM E. coli-induced oxidative burst (r2 = 0.23, P = 0.03). There was a moderate inverse association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and LPS-stimulated TNF-ɑ production in shelter dogs (r2 = 0.40, P = 0.04). These results demonstrate immune dysregulation in vitro in shelter dogs housed for ≥7 days when compared to age, breed, and sex-matched control dogs. While serum 25(OH)D concentrations did not differ between shelter and control dogs, significant associations between 25(OH)D concentration and immune function parameters in vitro were identified.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are among the primary causes of decreased quality of life as well as mortality of hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the predictive value of the red blood cell distribution width (RDW)-to-platelet ratio (RPR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) regarding the occurrence or development of cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients, as well as the prognostic value of this metric. A total of 219 hemodialysis patients with cardiovascular events (HCE group) and 276 hemodialysis patients with no cardiovascular events (HNCE group) were enrolled in the present study. The clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters on admission, including RDW, as well as neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts, were recorded. The NLR and RPR were increased in the HCE group compared with those in the HNCE group and there was a positive association between the NLR or RPR and the incidence of cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients. In the receiver operating characteristics curve analysis, the area under the curve of the RPR for predicting cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients was 0.88, while that for the NLR was 0.84. The sensitivity and specificity of the RPR for predicting cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients were 0.87 and 0.82 respectively, and for the NLR, they were 0.75 and 0.79, respectively. The RPR was an independent risk factor for the prognosis regarding cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients. In addition, the NLR and RPR were correlated with brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), creatine kinase isoenzyme-MB (CK-MB), and associated with ST segment changes in HCE patients. In conclusion, it was possible to predict the incidence of cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients using the NLR and RPR, while the RPR had a better sensitivity and specificity than the NLR. The RPR was an independent risk factor for the prognosis regarding cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients. These routinely available parameters should be considered as novel diagnostic markers for the occurrence and development of cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients and their prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The endotoxin tolerance (ET) of Kupffer cells (KCs) is an important protective mechanism for limiting endotoxin shock. As a key anti-inflammatory molecule, the roles and mechanism of Forkhead protein O3a (Foxo3a) in ET of KCs are not yet well understood. METHODS ET and nonendotoxin tolerance (NET) KCs models were established in vitro and in vivo. The levels of cytokines were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The protein expression and phosphorylation levels were detected by western blotting (WB). Changes in the localization of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and Foxo3a in KCs were detected by immunofluorescence assays. KCs apoptosis and survival rates were detected by flow cytometry and an automatic cell counter, respectively. RESULTS The activity of NF-κB and the levels of p-Foxo3a and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in the ET group were significantly lower than those in the NET group, while the levels of Foxo3a and interleukin 10 (IL-10) in the ET group were significantly higher than those in the NET group. Overexpression of Foxo3a or the use of a phosphatidylinositol-3-hydroxykinase (PI3K) inhibitor suppressed the activation of NF-κB by decreasing the levels of p-Foxo3a by inhibiting the activity of PI3K/AKT, which improved the tolerance of KCs and mice to endotoxin. In contrast, silencing Foxo3a or the use of a PI3K agonist reduced the tolerance of KCs and mice to endotoxin. The PI3K agonist counteracted the inhibitory effects of Foxo3a overexpression on NF-κB, impairing the tolerance of KCs to endotoxin. CONCLUSIONS The on-off action of Foxo3a in the ET of KCs depends on the PI3K/AKT pathway.

Abstract
Rapid activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system are hallmarks of the acute stress response and these systems interact with the immune system by signaling though glucocorticoid and adrenergic receptors on immune cells. There is limited information about the effect of these physiologic responses on immunologic parameters of pet dogs enrolled in clinical studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate how travel, instrumentation, and hospitalization alter immunologic parameters in pet dogs. Blood was collected from healthy dogs in a home environment and from healthy dogs at the time of presentation to the hospital and after instrumentation and 24 hours of hospitalization. We found that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced downregulation of toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) was blunted in dogs exposed to stress. Neutrophil and monocyte major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII) expression increased after transportation to the veterinary hospital but then became similar to that of the control dogs at the end of hospitalization. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell cytotoxicity function was blunted in dogs exposed to the stress of transportation as well as hospitalization. Neutrophil apoptosis was greater in dogs exposed to stress compared to controls although this effect significantly decreased after hospitalization stress. Conversely, stress did not alter induced or spontaneous cytokine production from leukocytes, neutrophil or monocyte expression of TLR4, LPS-induced downregulation of monocyte TLR4, LPS-induced neutrophil and monocyte expression of MHCII or peripheral blood lymphocyte phenotype. Transportation and instrumentation/hospitalization stress should be considered when interpreting immunologic studies in pet dogs.

Abstract
A 10-year old, castrated male, Bichon Frise with a history of hyperadrenocorticism and intrahepatic portal vein hypoplasia was diagnosed with superficial necrolytic dermatitis (SND). The dog exhibited thick crusts on the chin, muzzle, prepuce, and paws. In addition, the dorsal surfaces of all paws were erythematous while the palmar/plantar surfaces were hyperkeratotic, hardened, and painful. The dog was treated with intravenous amino acid infusions (AAI), raw egg yolks, as well as zinc and omega-3 fatty acid oral supplements. The dog required AAI once every 2–3 weeks because this coincided with recrudescence of painful skin lesions. The dog was subsequently diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. A consult with the Nutrition Service was pursued 220 days after the original SND diagnosis because of concern for feeding raw eggs and for malnutrition since appetite was variable, muscle condition was reduced, and greater than 50% of ingested calories were from foods that were not nutritionally complete. There was also concern regarding the variability of the diet and the impact it would have on the management of diabetes mellitus. The diet was prepared by the dog owner according to a provided recipe and presented twice daily. The diet was rich in high quality protein and fat. All other treatments including medications, supplements, and bathing schedule remained unchanged at the time of diet modification. The dog was subclinical for SND associated clinical signs approximately 3 weeks after the diet modification, which also coincided with the last AAI. The AAI was postponed and was next administered 7 weeks later (i.e., 10 weeks from the previous infusion). The dog remained subclinical for SND related clinical signs and continued to receive AAI once every 10–12 weeks until he was euthanized 718 days later for complications related to severe multi-drug resistant, skin infections. In conclusion, this report highlights a novel role for nutritionally balanced home-made diets designed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist could substantially increase time interval between AAI and outcome in dogs with SND.
