Sex Differences in Simple Reaction Tasks

Examining reaction time variability on the stop-signal task in the ABCD study

OBJECTIVE

Reaction time variability (RTV) has been estimated using Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and diffusion model (DM) indices. Rarely have studies examined interrelationships among these performance indices in childhood, and the use of reaction time (RT) computational models has been slow to take hold in the developmental psychopathology literature. Here, we extend prior work in adults by examining the interrelationships among different model parameters in the ABCD sample and demonstrate how computational models of RT can clarify mechanisms of time-on-task effects and sex differences in RTs.

METHOD

This study utilized trial-level data from the stop signal task from 8916 children (9-10 years old) to examine Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and DM indicators of RTV. In addition to describing RTV patterns, we examined interrelations among these indicators, temporal patterns, and sex differences.

RESULTS

There was no one-to-one correspondence between DM and ex-Gaussian parameters. Nonetheless, drift rate was most strongly associated with standard deviation of RT and tau, while nondecisional processes were most strongly associated with RT, mu, and sigma. Performance worsened across time with changes driven primarily by decreasing drift rate. Boys were faster and less variable than girls, likely attributable to girls' wide boundary separation.

CONCLUSIONS

Intercorrelations among model parameters are similar in children as has been observed in adults. Computational approaches play a crucial role in understanding performance changes over time and can also clarify mechanisms of group differences. For example, standard RT models may incorrectly suggest slowed processing speed in girls that is actually attributable to other factors.

Effect of types of stimuli, handedness and gender differences on reaction time among adults students during the COVID-19 pandemic

Study aim: The COVID-19 pandemic has unhinged the lives of people across the globe, in particular, university students who are home-schooling. No study has investigated the influence of specific parameters on reaction time (RT) among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current study aims to describe the relationship between RT and parameters (types of stimuli, handedness, and gender differences) that may affect its values during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Material and methods: RT of 60 volunteers to visual and auditory stimuli were recorded using the drop ruler method. RT was compared within-subject with respect to handedness and type of stimulus, and between subjects with regards to gender.

Results: Although a small difference between RT reported as a function of hands and gender was observed, these results were statistically insignificant. However, females had a significant shorter RT to visual than the auditory stimulus.

Conclusions: Findings showed that no significant differences were obtained between all comparisons made, except between females RT to visual stimulus and auditory stimulus. This can be attributed to the high level of stress and anxiety that may occur among students due to the COVID-19, which is the most prevalent and dangerous topic for university students, especially female students.

Coincidence-anticipation timing and reaction time in youth tennis and table tennis players

The purpose of this study was to compare the coincidence-anticipation timing and reaction times (RT) of 10- to 14-year-old tennis and table tennis players and examine possible sex differences. 107 (51.4%) tennis and 101 (48.6%) table tennis players participated in this study. Players were compared on coincidence-anticipation timing and reaction time. Tennis players performed with less error in the coincidence-anticipation timing task than table tennis players, whereas table tennis players had lower mean reaction time than tennis players. It was also found that male players made fewer errors in the coincidence-anticipation timing task than their female counterparts.

Fixed-links models for investigating experimental effects combined with processing strategies in repeated measures designs: a cognitive task as example

Fixed-links models enable the investigation of experimental effects in combination with processing strategies in the framework of repeated measures designs. The consideration of different processing strategies is reasonable whenever the task requirements can be met in different ways. Effects due to specific processing strategies become obvious in comparing the models representing these processing strategies and also by investigating the variances of the corresponding latent variables. The usefulness of such models is demonstrated by the reaction time data of a cognitive task including three treatment levels. Two different processing strategies were considered: analytic and holistic. The results indicated that the participants applied both processing strategies. The analytic strategy was primarily applied for performing with respect to the second and third treatment levels and the holistic strategy with respect to the first treatment level.

Fractional anisotropy correlates with auditory simple reaction time performance

During the last two decades, modern imaging studies focused intensively on the broad field of reaction time paradigms and significantly enhanced the understanding of behavioral performance. However, interindividual variations of simple reaction time (SRT) have been barely investigated. In this study, we intended to identify neural correlates of interindividual variation in auditory SRT (aSRT) employing the Poffenberger paradigm with auditory stimuli, in order to investigate neural processing speed performance. We conducted a whole-head voxel based morphometry analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA) in 19 healthy, right handed subjects. Simple regression analysis between FA and interindividual aSRT measures was performed for each voxel. Significant positive correlation (R(2): 0.44/0.78 min/max) for FA vs. individual mean aSRT was found in the right central cerebellum dorso-cranial of the dentate nucleus. A significant correlation (R(2): 0.453/0.633 min/max) was also detected between FA and the hand performance index, which characterizes the intraindividual RT difference between left and right hand, within the precentral portion of the pyramidal tract in the left hemisphere. Fast right handed response correlated with high local FA values located within neural structures participating in right hand control. Against the background of only right handed participants in our study, the hypothesis of local myelination as one basic condition influencing reaction time performance is strongly supported. The presented results identify brain areas involved in the processing speed of the aSRT tasks. We propose that the presented findings are due to an influence of participants' right hand preference on both FA and aSRT measures.
